In a significant political development, President Joe Biden has officially announced his decision to step down as the Democratic nominee for the upcoming election. In a heartfelt statement, Biden expressed his "full support and endorsement" of Vice President Kamala Harris, signaling a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party. What are your views on Biden's presidency? Do you think his policies have positively impacted the country? How do you feel about Kamala Harris stepping into the role of the Democratic nominee? Let’s talk about it…

William Beckwith: “The 25th amendment should have been invoked . Biden hasn't been of sound mind for some time. Shame on those that have used Biden for their personal benefit.”

Chris Castillo: “President Biden has served our country well. He has been a man that truly loves his country and always did what was best for it. I am a proud American and proud that he continues to put his country first. As Democrats we must rally, unite and push forward to a victory in November.”

Laurie Wilde Piccolo: “This administration is a complete failure! Inflation, immigration, he is an embarrassment to our country.”

to have healthy, frank conversations about what's best for the country, but some elected officials displayed a total lack of respect and professionalism. He deserved better.I will say that I am proud of us for having more loyalty to our country than to an individual. It's time to move forward and to be honest, I think there are many people out there like me who have been disenchanted who are newly excited to see the possibility of having a strong, smart, talented woman (and maybe two!) at the top of the ticket, especially at a time when women's rights have been rolled backward. More to follow on why those of you who didn't like your previous choices for President should feel a sense of hope with Vice President Kamala Harris. Thank you, Mr. President, for displaying true leadership and for all you have done for the American people.”

Jon Ma: “He was a failure which cost the country so much deficit in a single term.”

Tara Heaney: “These are the same people that were trying to convince us a month ago that he was at the top of his game. If their lips are moving they’re lying.”

pick for this ticket considering his personal background and loyalties, his political service to then state of Arizona and the US, right along with his honorable and decorated military and astronaut career. Choosing Kelly would create a winning ticket that would send the clear message from our party to the people of what type of behavior and leadership a righteous and virtuous public servant should live by and raise the bar of what it means to be a “True Patriot” juxtaposed with the republican Trump/ Vance ticket whom clearly is aspiring to use their private sector wealth/foreign adversary meddling, bigotry and a military training and service background as a door into realizing the authoritarian aspiration of becoming the American domestic enemy of the people and a realized threat to our freedoms and constitution for all of humanity serving as the Trojan Horse from within. We need real “Oath Keepers”to bring and maintain a strong and democratically principled leadership to our country. We must resist politically and rise up to vote against the tyranny and authoritarianism sought by the right and their despotic Russian/North Korean government allies. We must break long standing barriers and ceilings and restore integrity, accountability, transparency and equality to every branch of our government.”

Dahlia Basaldua Garcia: “Biden is a true American who has served our country for 50+ years. I would love to see a HarrisObama ticket.”

Bruce Melville: “Let’s push out the guy everyone voted for and then shout about how our democracy is in danger… The Democrats are a complete joke. It’s a shame what they have done to Joe Biden. They hid his decline from day one. I felt sorry for him TBH.”

Queta Rodriguez: “ I'm so grateful for President Joe Biden's service to our country and respect him even more for putting our nation's interests ahead of his own. That's real, selfless servant leadership. At face value, he deserves another presidency based on his historic accomplishments, from infrastructure, climate action, job creation, veterans issues, and the steady hand leading us out of the pandemic, just to name a few. Quite frankly I am so disappointed in some Democratic leaders who have treated him so unfairly. The concerns are legitimate and I believe we should be able

Margie Mora Delatorre: “Absolutely! President Biden is a great man who (has again) put our country before himself. I wish him and his family all the best. Now it is truly time for us to unite and stand for the betterment of our country. We need to unite and back Kamala Harris. We need to make sure that we stand and protect our country. We all need to Vote blue, for ourselves, for our children and grandchildren.”

Sheila Solowynsky: “The foreign countries will mop the floor up with Kamala.”

Walter Lewis Herbeck: “Mexico has just elected a Lady as their President. Now the USA should follow.”

Jason Compean: “Lots of respect for President Biden for being a true public servant leader of the people. We must commend him for the many accomplishments and principled actions throughout his career before and while being our president. . We must now unite and chose wisely, as time is of the essence, and personally any democratic party decision should include very strong consideration for choosing Mark Kelly as a

Luis Guerra: “La grandeza de un líder se mide en anteponer sus intereses personales por la del bienestar de su pueblo, mis respetos para el señor presidente Biden, te mando un fuerte abrazo mi querida amiga.”

Catherine Dailey: “For almost 4 years and never a peep from her, and now she thinks she's got the balls to run this country? Oh Lordy, ahhh nope.”

Sana Sana: “Totally agree, but it's time for Trump to regain leadership and make his country great again . It was great while it lasted for the Democrats. New beginnings are always welcomed. Both of them are great leaders, truthful and loyal to their country. Land of the Free.”

Peggy Morris-Vele: “If anyone believes that, then they’re crazy because he’s done nothing but put us in the worst situation in the whole world in the last four years.”

Ilya Klotsman: “Not one word about her plans for the better future of our country, only attacking Trump.”

Noe Perez (b. 1958) is a contemporary artist living in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born and raised in Falfurrias, Texas. Interested in art from a young age, Perez’s artistic education began in his early teens as he studied with various local artists. Despite his love of art, he chose to major in engineering. Perez earned his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at A&I University in Kingsville.

Unwilling to put aside his intense interest in art, Perez has continued to advance his artistic abilities, attending plein air painting workshops with Plein Air Painters of America artists Ron Rencher and George Strickland. Most of his work is done in the studio from photographs and plein air sketches. Perez believes that plein air painting is an essential exercise for any landscape painter, and he paints outside whenever possible. He paints the South Texas landscape - dusty terrain dotted with low brush and cactus in

bright sunlight - using beautifully realistic colors that are equally muted and vibrant. Noe Perez is a master at capturing the beauty and essence of South Texas from San Antonio to the Rio Grande.

Noe’s subject emphasis is in the South Texas landscape where he grew up and still lives. Noe’s work is influenced by the San Antonio school of early Texas Impressionism - Julian Onderdonk, Jose Arpa, Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood, and Dawson Dawson-Watson. Noe graduated in 1979 from Texas A & I and was a practicing engineer for

over 40 years. During this time, work and a family kept him pretty busy, but he still found time to produce original artwork in a home studio. “Most of my spare time is spent painting, planning new paintings, or reading about art. I enjoy many types of art, but Texas art is the closest to my heart.”

“I like to study the original works that inspire me whenever I have the opportunity. Some of my favorite artists include William Merritt Chase and Joaquin Sorolla as well as painters Julian Onderdonk and Porfirio Salinas.” Noe has par-

ticipated in the Night of Artists Art Show and Dinner for the benefit of the Briscoe Museum. In the last few years, Noe has also participated in the Kerrville Museum of Western Art’s annual Roundup. Noe’s artwork is included in the book Texas Traditions (2010) and in Of Texas Rivers & Texas Art published in 2017.

In 2015, Noe received a commission from King Ranch to create a painting commemorating the one-hundredyear anniversary of the historic Main House.

In Winter 2021, King Ranch: A Legacy in Art was published by

Texas A & M University Press, featuring the paintings of Noe Perez with insightful essays from Bruce Shackelford, Ron Tyler, and Bob Kinnan. This book celebrates the many ways ‘King Ranch culture’ has enriched appreciation for the decorative, practical, and fine arts in Texas and the greater American West. An exhibition of the King Ranch paintings opened in December 2021 at the Witte Historical Museum in San Antonio, Texas. The King Ranch exhibition has also traveled to the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, OK, and the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi.

Most recently, Noe has completed a mural for the Ralston Family Collections Center at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. Noe Perez’s artwork is included in the 2023 publication, The Art of Texas State Parks published by Texas A&M Press celebrating the centennial anniversary of Texas State Parks.

The Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi opened in 1936 as the Centennial Museum. It became Art Museum of South Texas in 1945. In the early 1970s board members contracted New York architect Philip Johnson, considered one of the founders of postmodern architecture to design the first phase of the Art Museum of South Texas. The museum collected mostly Texas art, much of which consisted of paintings, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, glass, and works of art on paper.

In the mid-1990s several museum board members from Corpus Christi visited the San Antonio Public Library designed by famed Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. They loved his bold style and contracted Legorreta in 1997 to complete the second phase of the art museum. The new expansion was completed in 2006 and doubled the museum's size.

The large white museum building is bold, with a series of pyramid peaks on the roof lining the back of the structure and stone water features streaming along the inviting entrance pathway reflecting Legorreta’s brilliant Mexican architectural style. Over the last two decades, the Art Museum began acquiring Latino art and exhibiting the works

of major Chicano artists including Cesar Martinez, Rolando Briceno, and Bruno Andrade whose works are currently on display.

This summer the beautiful paintings of contemporary Latino artist Noe Perez occupy a large wing of the Art Museum. Perez, a native of Falfurias, Texas has spent decades painting the diverse and abundant varieties of trees, plants, and flowers of the South Texas region. Although mainly known as a landscape artist, when he was commissioned to paint King Ranch, he added farm homes, barns, windmills, rivers, and domesticated animals to his paintings.

Falfurias, where Perez grew up, is a small ranching and agricultural community between San Antonio and McAllen. As a child, Perez loved to draw, paint, and read about great artists. Despite his love of art, he majored in civil engineering at the Kingsville campus of Texas A&M University.

Over the next forty years, he worked full-time as a civil engineer and painted in the evenings and weekends. He also participated as often as possible in classes with plein air Painters of America, Ron Rencher, and George Strickland.

In 2015, members of the King Ranch Board of Directors commissioned Perez to create a painting commemorating the 100th anniversary of the historic Main House on the famous Texas King Ranch. Over the next six years, the project grew and more paintings were added.

The editors of Texas A&M University Press learned of the beautiful paintings and commissioned three Texana writers, Ron Tyler, Bruce Shackelford, and King Ranch archivist Bob Kinnan to write essays about the fabled ranch for their publication King Ranch: A Legacy in Art [2021]. Some of the paintings were included in a December 2021 exhibit at the Witte Histori-

cal Museum in San Antonio. Many notable Texas landscape artists loved to paint en plein air, but Perez told Ron Tyler that he found the typical South Texas wind to be such a hindrance that he limited such instances to sketching on small canvases and taking photographs. And, of course, the Texas summer heat often surpasses 100 degrees for days and weeks making it even more difficult to work outside for long. Perez completes his canvases in his home studio working from his small plein air drawings and photographs.

To complete this project, Perez spent time in all four divisions of King Ranch. I am only familiar with the Las Norias section with its distinguished white dunes on the Gulf Coast. Harriett and I visited the dunes several years after the celebrated Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide captured them in stunning black and white images. Perez visited

Las Norias numerous times and completed beautiful paintings of the dunes. Perez’s most notable paintings in this Art Museum of South Texas exhibit present the ranch's varied wild plants and ranch animals. King Ranch is noted for its prized cattle and horses. It is one of the few ranches in America that has produced two Kentuck Derby winners, Middleground and Assault. Assault won the Triple Crown in 1946, the only Texas-bred horse to date to win the crown. Perez painted horses and cattle, acknowledging King Ranch's fame for its prize-winning steers, longhorns, and bulls. I have followed Perez’s artistic career for about 15 years and know about his meteoric rise as a Texas artist. His paintings of Texas cacti and wildflowers are among the best I have seen by contemporary Texas artists. His work has been featured in major art books,

Texas Traditions [2010] and in Of Texas Rivers & Texas Art 2017. He recently completed a large 18-foot mural for the Ralston Family Collections Center in the Alamo compound in San Antonio.

Historian Ron Tyler noted, “None of the previous artists who painted King Ranch exhibited [Perez’s] sensitivity and passion for the landscape.” Perez’s collection of images at the Art Museum exhibit, reveals the environment and animals that most visitors who tour the ranch never see. For that reason, Perez especially wanted to depict scenes from the distinct sections of the ranch.

The Las Norias Division, for example, the southernmost section, is home to coastal brush, white sand dunes, and thousands of acres of spiny

blocks, enough space for him to store hundreds of tons of granite rock. In Moroles’s early work, he found ways to tear at the stone rather than to cut deeply into it allowing him to create sculptures that look like weaving. Each of his pieces has about 50 percent of its surfaces untouched and raw representing parts of the torn stone. The remainder of each sculpture is smoothed and polished.

Four years after opening his Rockport studio, Moroles received his most important commission, a sculpture “Lapstrake” for the E.F. Hutton-CBS Plaza in New York City. His construction of this 64-ton, 22-foot-tall sculpture gained him national attention.

oak trees.

The Art Museum's permanent collection also featured additional works by numerous Latino artists including the granite sculptor Jesus Moroles.

Jesus Bautista Moroles, born in Corpus Christi in 1950, moved to Dallas at a young age. He studied art and as a young teen worked every summer in masonry and construction with his uncle in Corpus Christi. Moroles returned to the Dallas area in 1973 and completed his art degree in 1978 at North Texas State University in Denton.

Moroles found a large parcel of land in Rockport, Texas, and moved there in 1983. With the help of his family, he constructed a studio occupying three city

When President George W. Bush presented Moroles with the National Medal of Arts in 2008, the media noted that Moroles had more than 2,000 works in China, Egypt, France, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and the United States. He is perhaps the most recognized Hispanic artist of the last two centuries, participating in over 160 one-person and 190 group exhibitions worldwide. Moroles died tragically in a car accident in 2015. There are two Moroles sculptures on display at the Corpus Christi museum. They are small, and one is placed in front of a window that looks out to the bay.

The Art Museum of South Texas is playing an important role in highlighting the contributions of Texas Latino artists and the rich cultural heritage they present in their artwork.

We will always remember Ramsey's constant smile and positive outlook, even when facing the toughest luchas. He never lost hope that justice would set him free all those years he was in prison.Upon his release, I was honored to bring him on as a paralegal because

I knew his heart, and he had a great mind. Latino history will include Ramsey entre las grandes voces de nuestra gente, among the great voices of our people."

Héctor Flores – LULAC

Former National President "Ramsey was instrumental in waking the sleeping Mexican American giant to become politically involved andbecame the face of the Raza Unida Party that threatened the political status quo in Texas. He was handsome, athletic, smart, a graduate of Baylor University and a lawyer who personified the American dream achieved on his merit."

Rosa Rosales – LULAC

Former National President "I will remember Ramsey for his ganas and courage as a young man to step up and be the face of a movement when our community needed him. Most people did not expect him to win, but his victory was in making a difference when thousands of votes went to his name and showed we could be a power at the ballot box. Yes, he faced difficulties later in his life, but that will never change the contributions he made for Latinos and Texas history."

David Contreras, Texas LULAC historian, created a website on Ramsey Muñiz and said, "he was a trailblazer, and to many, an iconic figure."

American Photographer’s Four-Year Journey Into The Heart Of Mexico Culminates In A

After four years of extensive travel and work in Mexico, noted American photographer, Brent Kollock, is publishing Charrería, Mexico’s National Treasure, a new photo book about Mexico’s national sport–the traditional rodeo form of Charrería. It will be released this summer through a crowdfunding campaign. In its strength and beauty, we are introduced to the original cowboys of the Western Hemisphere and their rodeo form played out in every corner of the country. Declared by UNESCO as a part of Mexico’s national patrimony, Kollock takes us behind the scenes and in front of the action for a deep look into the soul of Mexico and a major part of its identity. A dream assignment culminates in this oversized volume of his signature style of photography. Along the way, Kollock has met and encouraged many people in the Charrería world to contribute to this new collection, in their words, to describe the importance of the sport as well as its relationship to the identity of Mexico. From local amateurs to living legends, a cast of men and women contribute their deeply held feelings about this most

Mexican of sports to further elucidate it to those who are perhaps less familiar.

Throughout these written pieces, themes of family, friendship, chivalry, and history permeate their words. In the photos, rendered in timeless black and white, the collaboration between photographer and participant is examined to create a document, both visual and written, that captures the essence and the deeply important aspects of Mexican culture performed so often in this beautiful and vital living history. Using only vintage Nikon lenses, a richness pervades the photos, not often found in today’s hyper sharp modern optics. Printed with the finest materials in Toluca, Mexico by the famous print house, Offset Santiago, this is one photography book not to be missed.
