Let’s talk about dating after 40 in 2023. Back in the day, people used to meet each other face-to-face, but now online dating has taken over. If you've gone through dating in your 40s or beyond, do you have any advice for our readers? Is it more or less challenging to date as you get older? Let’s talk about it…

Oscar Garza: “It's a lot more different and difficult now.”

Tone Anthony: “Don’t be afraid to date outside your parameters when it comes to physical attributes. Your perfect guy might not be 6 feet tall. And your perfect woman might not have the perfect body. You’re selling yourself short .”

Veronica Amaro: “I’ve stayed friends with people I’ve met on dating sites, but I haven’t been on one in over 2 years. I prefer to meet people organically like in the good ole days. Go to places with like minded people. Enjoy every second in life. When you love yourself more, people will gravitate to you.”

Eli Rodriguez: “My advice is communication is king at any age, and compromise when it's necessary! Be transparent when it feels right, and the rest leave in God's hands! Simple is the best strategy because relationships can be complicated! My 2 cents!”

Emmitt Jimenez: “A beautiful soul and heart goes a long way!”

Rick Carter: “My advice to the men... Take a Care Package "The Bible, Mace, Zip Ties, & a Taser.”

Emmitt Jimenez: “It is what it is. Be yourself, stay true to yourself, be honest, forget the past, remember what you are looking for and be true.”

Jeff Hull: “To me it's challenging because of the great expectations they put on you. Like if you don't have a nice car or a job where you can help them pay their bills, then you ain't worthy. I'm sorry if I'm not out at the bar or club every weekend and your bills aren't my responsibility. I miss when dating was much simpler. Like going to the movies or out to eat. When I am interested in a woman, I don't care what her bank account looks like or what she drives. Just that she can be honest, loyal, truthful and faithful. As well as a good heart and empathy.”

Charlene Smith: “As a senior dating coach, some of the points made here are valid. I have many success stories of people dating over 60 and beyond! It is a myth that there is a shortage

of potential partners. It's true there are many ways besides online to meet and date people. In my book , release date 27 August, I provide a master plan to find meaningful companionship. Learning the desires of your heart helps to sort out people that don't measure up to your standards. Having a positive attitude and a good plan has helped my clients find their senior soulmate. Love is out there and I can help you find it! I'm 69 and have a great partner. email me: 60seekingsoulmate@gmail.com”

Queta Rodriguez: “Dating as you get older is harder because the pool is smaller, but it's also better because you have wisdom and experience to help you determine what a compatible partner would be. Like everything, there are pros and cons to online dating apps. From personal experience, you have to sift through a lot of toads to find the prince. You have to know what your non-starters are, and often that is not possible just from meeting someone traditionally. For example, my profile clearly stated "no smokers and non Trump supporters." Right off the bat I could eliminate people I knew I had no desire to date. I know many people who met their significant other online and have a wonderful relationship and marriage, including professionals I work with. Luckily for me, next month I'll be marrying my Facebook Dating match! So there is hope!”

Ramon Chapa Jr.: “Never been on dating sites! I have to see the real thing! I had a lot of girls back then, I have a lot of girls now!”

Luis Campos: “Way more challenging because we're at the age where we could date the mom or the daughter!”

Paul Budak: “On the sites no one will date an amputee.”

Gene A. Gomez: “Too many fake people. Doesn't matter how you meet someone, in person or on a dating site. Doesn't seem to be much truth to who they really are. So yeah, dating sucks!”

Henry Shamdas: “I don’t know, I've been with my wife for 17 years, 8 of which I have been married. If it didn’t work out, I don’t think I would bother with all that mess and just fish and shoot.”

Carey Calvert: “... if you're able to take an L, you'll always be good. I don't believe it's more or less difficult. No way will I do a dating site. The time I spend on that could be the time I'm actually out of the house creating opportunities.”

Benjamin Godina: “I'd say keep it original and meet on the streets. Sorry but church or

the grocery store are not the "go to" places. Get involved in events and find someone who has the same likes to start off with.”

Allen Lee Gonzales: “Dating is overrated. Haven’t been on a date in 25 yrs. LOL”

Jazmin D Zuñiga: “I don't believe it has anything to do with where you meet. I have a great friend I met on a dating site and my last 8 year relationship I met through a dating site. They're both 2 different people, the 8 year relationship is a man that is part of a church, the church choir, and still cheated. It is the person itself, it doesn't matter if you meet them at HEB, during a hike, on the beach or on a dating site. Times have changed and people have lost their train of thought, trying to keep up with what's "IN" instead of keeping up with what is inside of themselves. We've lost self-love, integrity, honesty, loyalty, all those things that are needed for a relationship to work and it has nothing to do with where you meet! The last man I've been talking to for the last 7 months, I met @ the gym. He makes me laugh, we spend good time talking, but he has no interest in having a relationship so I know it won't pass a friendship status and It's okay because I understand he's not the one for me. It's our thoughts that have made relationships different or difficult. The question is, Are we truly happy with ourselves? Are we truly happy being alone? And if the answer is yes, then you have to find someone that feels the same way as you do, happy within themself. Two people that are happy with themselves would be a perfect match because if you can add instead of subtract in someone's life, then you're perfect for that person. I don't think it's a challenge, I don't think it's the place you meet, I think it's our thoughts, our actions.. It's us. We need to look inside of ourselves.”

Jaime Castro: “Many fakes and dating nowadays aren't the same from back then, no respect, no manners, and no trust and now it's all about what's on the outside or what you have it's not about what you have on the inside and it sucks.”

Ian Ybanez: “As a well experienced youngin, dating sites suck…. Just find better watering holes to meet good people. Like, where would your ideal mate actually be spending their time? I doubt you’d want to marry someone who is locked in their home 24/7 preying on dating sights, or at a bar every weekend. Do some thinking and figure out where the people you’d like to meet would be at, and when….”

Mor Lu: “Dating sucks now! Period!”

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Presents The 44th Cinefestival San Antonio July 11-16 at The Historic

of

San Antonio’s original Latinx film festival returns on Tuesday, July 11 through Sunday, July 16, 2023, at the historic Guadalupe Theater with a greater than-ever Texas filmmaker presence. Featuring 114 films, including 38 films from San Antonio and 40 films from the Lone Star State, the 44th CineFestival San Antonio continues to support local and regional filmmakers, while offering a well-rounded program to local audiences that also includes national and international films that highlight artistic excellence and diversity.

“We never know how many films will be submitted each year, but with a total of 312 entries this year, the amount of work being done by local and regional Latinx, and indigenous filmmakers is staggering.” said CineFestival Programmer Eugenio del Bosque. “Of course, the work varies in quality, and many of these films are short films, yet it is very encouraging to see young and veteran filmmakers in San Antonio and Texas are hard at work. We look forward to being a part of bringing an audience to these films and helping some of these voices mature, now and in the years to come.”

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center will add an extra day to the 44th CineFestival San Antonio to accommodate the high volume of submissions. This year, the festival will feature 31 screenings showcasing 15 feature films and 99 short films.

“The festival continues to grow in popularity and in fact, this is the second time in the past three years, that we extended the festival to another day. We wanted to make sure we were able to showcase as many local and regional artists whose unique voices need to be heard.” said del Bosque.

The festival will open on Tuesday, July 11 with a special 30th anniversary screening of “Blood In, Blood Out,” directed by Taylor Hackford. This event will be hosted by Jesse Borrego, San Antonio’s own stage and film actor and CineFestival artistic advisor. The screening will be free and open to the public and will be a unique opportunity to revisit this seminal work of the Chicano film cannon based on the true-life experiences of screenwriter Jimmy Santiago Baca and starring Borrego, Damian Chapa, Benjamin Bratt, Enrique Castillo, and Valente Rodriguez, among many others.

“CineFestival is an important vehicle to showcase the Latino narrative. It offers the community a unique chance to see authentic Latino stories being told, from Latinx filmmakers, whose work may not easily be found at the movie theater,” said Borrego. “When you feature a free screening of a movie like ‘Blood In, Blood Out’ in the heart of the Westside, it’s hard to not miss the cultural significance of it being featured by the Guadalupe’s CineFestival,” he added.

The festival will close with the San Antonio premiere of the documentary “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” directed by Alejandra Vasquez

and Sam Osborn, which focuses on Edinburg North High School's acclaimed Mariachi Oro in South Texas, as they rebuild their twentymember varsity group and work on a shoestring budget to compete in the state championships, and the winner of the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

The 44 CineFestival San Antonio will offer 13 free screenings, including Family Day on Saturday, July 15 with a morning block presenting a selection of youth films made by artists, 19 years of age or younger, followed by “On Guard: A Story of American Youth” (Dir. Allen Otto, 2023, Texas) and “Home Is Somewhere Else” (Dir. Carlos Hagerman, Jorge Villalobos, 2022, Mexico).

Free screenings will also include Senior Cinema, on Thursday, July 13 at noon featuring “Conjunto Blues” (Dir. Joel Celestino Settles, 2020, San Antonio) dedicated to San Antonio’s elderly film and music community. Beginning on Wednesday, July 12, “Cine en el Barrio” presents four screenings featuring a selection of international short films from Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Spain, and Venezuela; and a collection of short films showcasing Latinx and indigenous talent from around the US.

Three Texas short film showcases include a total of 17 short films from artists working in Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Edinburg, Kyle, El Paso, Pflugerville, and Weslaco among other Texas locations.

All 44th CineFestival San Antonio screenings will take place at the historic Guadalupe Theater, located at 1301 Guadalupe Street, San Antonio, TX 78207. Full festival schedule and tickets will be available Friday, June 23 at guadalupeculturalarts. org. Individual tickets are $8 and festival passes are $40.

Latinos in Texas: Affirmative Action, Population Growth, and the Future of College Admission

In striking down affirmative action programs in universities across the country, Chief Justice John G. Roberts argued that the programs “unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, [and] involve racial stereotyping.” Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in dissent that the ban decision cements “a superficial rule of colorblindness as a constitutional principle in an endemically segregated society where race has always mattered and continues to matter.”

A New York Times Editorial explored the two opposing arguments and concluded: “It is nice to imagine an America where all people are treated the same, regardless of the color of their skin, but that is not the nation we live in today or ever have lived in.” Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson’s dissent challenged the idea that we do not need affirmative action because America has achieved a colorblind status. She wrote: “Our country has never been colorblind.” She added, “Deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life.” [NYT Editorial, July 2, 2023]. The Supreme Court's decision to ban Affirmation Action in colleges came a few days after the announcement by the U.S. Census that the Latino population of Texas was now officially the largest population group in the state. Texas’s state demographer Dr. Lloyd Potter commented that Hispanic Texans now make up 40.2% of the state’s population, edging out non-Hispanic white Texans, who make up 39.8%.”

[Texas Standard]

This demographic change is significant because it has been 193 years since Latinos have been the majority population in Texas. Historians estimate that the Latino population stood at 5,000 in 1830. Following the Mexican gift of six million acres to the Ste-

phen F. Austin colony in the mid-1820s, the non-Hispanic population of Texas expanded to more than 30,000 by 1835. Today, as the largest minority, and historically underrepresented in higher education, Latinos face many challenges.

In light of the Supreme Court decision on affirmative action, it is notable that there were also significant increases in the Asian and Black populations of Texas. The population changes between 2021 and 2022 showed that the Texas Asian population grew at a rate of about 5.5%,

whereas the non-Hispanic white population only grew 0.3%, The Asian population grew at a rate of more than twice that of Hispanics. The Hispanic Texas population increased by 2.6 percent. To the surprise of many, Potter said: “We have the largest African-American population compared to any other state in the union.”

I attended UT-Austin during the mid-1960s, an era when the campus made a transition from eight decades of segregation to an era of greater equality and inclusion. I started at UT-Aus-

There were no Blacks on the UT football team until 1970. The strict application of housing segregation denied Black students access to any of the campus dormitories or dining facilities. With the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, UT-Austin finally desegregated its dorms and dining facilities. During my senior year in 1966, the entire Moore-Hill dorm had only one Black student, and he lived next door to me. That fall, hooded members of the Klu Klux Klan marched through Austin to the State Capitol. After graduation from UTAustin, my wife Harriett and I left for California to teach and pursue advanced degrees. While studying for my Ph.D in History at UCLA, I worked with Upward Bound at Occidental College teaching and mentoring Latino students from East Los Angeles and Black students from Compton. In 1980 my wife Harriett and our two children returned to UTAustin. I accepted a tenured job in the UT History Department where I taught Urban History, Southwest History, and Civil Rights History for nearly two decades.

tin in 1962, seven years after the first Blacks were admitted in 1955 following the Brown vs. Board of Education decision of 1954 which struck down separate but equal education policy. As a track scholarship athlete, I lived in Moore-Hill, one of the few fully air-conditioned dormitories on campus. At the time, a few Blacks attended UT-Austin, but none were on athletic scholarships. In 1962, I was the only Latino among the 400 students in the dorm and the only non-Anglo on an athletic scholarship.

In the fall of 1992, Cheryl Hopwood sued UT-Austin after being denied admission to the UT Law School. I had just begun a new post in the UT administration as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies. I had experience as an expert witness in a discrimination case in federal court in California; thus I was chosen to testify in the Hopwood case on behalf of the University of Texas defense team. Cheryl Hopwood claimed that her denial to the UT Law School had violated her equal protection rights.

I testified before U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks' court in April of 1994 on the history of

discrimination in Texas and in particular at UT-Austin.

UT-Austin lawyers acknowledged what every legal scholar knew: Texas and every Texas institution of higher education, with the exception of the Historically Black colleges, had denied Blacks admission for nearly l00 years. The UTAustin affirmative action plan was an effort to remedy years of exclusion. My experiences as an undergraduate student at UT-Austin during the segregation era gave me insights as an expert witness.

Judge Sparks ruled in UTAustin’s favor noting that “while it was regrettable that affirmative action programs are still needed in our society, they were still a necessity until society could overcome its legacy of institutional racism.”

The Fifth Court of Appeals reversed the Sparks ruling and found in favor of Hopwood holding that the UT-Austin

Asian, and 7.1 percent Black. [Currently, UTSA admits 90 percent of its applicants]. With the recent Supreme Court ban of affirmative action, I decided to review how my former campus, UT-Austin, had fared in sustaining its diverse undergraduate enrollment. According to the Texas Tribune, in 2020 UT-Austin’s freshman class was 32% white and 31% Hispanic. Black students made up 7% of the freshman class at UTAustin that year. The Tribune did not cite enrollment numbers for Asian students, but other sources show Asians at 20.2% of the undergraduate students at UT-Austin currently.

Law School could not use race as a factor in deciding which students to admit. UT-Austin appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court which declined to review the case, and the Hopwood decision became the final law with respect to the use of race in admissions in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, the three states over which the Fifth Circuit has jurisdiction.

I left UT-Austin in 1999 to become president of The University of Texas-San Antonio where I served until 2017. [I am happily retired].

During my years at UTSA, we increased the enrollment of Latino, Black, and Asian students, three groups that had little presence in many Texas universities before affirmative action. UTSA was not a highly selective university, and many of our students came from San Antonio, a community that was 63.1 percent Latino, 2.7 percent

The San Antonio ExpressNews writer Samantha Ketterer reported that the affirmative action ban will result in “undoing a policy that selective schools such as the University of Texas at Austin have relied on for decades to increase the racial diversity of their admitted classes.” That is not necessarily so. UT-Austin is a very selective institution, and few campuses in the topranked 100 U.S. universities enroll more Latinos. However, UT-Austin largely employs the Top Ten Percent Plan to maintain diversity, which has proven to be an excellent alternative to the use of affirmative action.

The UT-Austin Top Ten Percent enrollment plan may well serve as a model for other states wishing to maintain diversity without affirmative action. The policy is simple: students who graduate in the top ten percent of their high school class are admitted to UT-Austin, regardless of SAT test scores or letters. Ironically, it is Texas’s wellentrenched but unofficial segregation that allows the Top Ten Percent Plan to work. The high schools of South Texas are largely Latino, and Latino and Black students are the majority in numerous schools in El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. Due to a significant overall increase in UT-Austin enrollment, [currently at 52,384 students] the university now admits only the Top Six Percent

of high school students.

A diverse student body is a worthy goal. Diversity, Justice Jackson wrote, means that “students of every race will come to have a greater appreciation and understanding of civic virtues, democratic values, and our country's commitment to equality.” Darren Walker, President of the Ford Founda-

tion, wrote on July 4th that “Study after study demonstrates that across organizations, diversity enhances critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, as well as productivity, profitability, and performance. It is a national tragedy that diversity is now a contested issue rather than a common interest.”
