Fiesta- Memory Lane

Fiesta is days away. My fondest memories of Fiesta were the parades, La Semana, the Carnival on the streets of downtown, my babies on a royalty court and participating in so many Fiesta events. My first parade, I distinctly remember, was when my oldest brother was in the marching band on the drumline. Years later, I was doing the same thing. Fiesta has always been my thing. What is or was your favorite part of Fiesta? Let's talk about it...

Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez: “Lita Ford at La Semana.”

Frances Potter: “Dancing on the street and having a few adult drinks.”

Mark Lambert: “My favorite part is that the restaurants are not as crowded while Fiesta is going on!!! I can go have a good meal, while others are paying $20 for a turkey leg!!! Enjoy! I will!!!”

Teresa Velasquez: “My favorite adult memory was Stevie Ray Vaughan at La Semana, the opening act was Joe King Carrasco! My favorite childhood memories are at the parades with my parents.”

My favorite thing as an adult was while working at the District Clerk's office, I'd rent a room at la Quinta (across from the market square) and invite my family, friends and staff to come hang out and drink and eat, while listening to the market music. Great memories.”

Paul Budak: “I remember my first NIOSA. My mother and I were in line and suddenly a whole bunch of people cut in line. I was upset and the lady apologized after mom shushed me. We got in for free. My mom told me it was a secret service detail for Lady Bird Johnson.”

Sandy Tapia: “When my Jimmy G would play under the bridge at market square and there were thousands of people there listening to him sing.”

Gregorio De La Paz: “Doing fiesta right there by the market square where you can still get rock and roll mirrors with the pictures of the band on them are fuzzy glow in the dark posters.”

Chris R. Pelayo: “The only Fiesta I remember was the last one I went to when I was a kid. Mom & Dad took us down to Broadway near where it crosses 35/281 and as we were walking towards Broadway we saw people running and other people bloody from being shot by the sniper. Never been back to Fiesta ever since that time. Nope. Plus it's Hella overrated and ridiculously expensive. No thanks.”

Stefani Shamloo: “When you took me for the first time and we ate all that good food.. good times! I have a pic of 7 y/o Christian eating his funnel cake. He was in heaven. Then getting to participate in Battle of the Bands with my baby his senior year and March the parade with him.”

Michael Momo Chazz Martinez: “I have plenty of other Fiesta memories, but the one that makes me shake my head happened around 1984. I was 11 years old. I think it was all of my Aunt Carmen's kids ( Alice, Lupe Lerma, Lydia P Ojeda, Juanita Posadas Garcia and Richard Posadas ) that came to town from South Houston and wanted to hit up the Carnival.I was allowed to go with them and on the way downtown, someone 'called an audible' and decided we would catch part of the Texas Cavaliers River Parade. You pay for seats on the banks of the San Antonio Riverwalk, but watching from the bridges was free. We found a smaller bridge that wasn't that packed.

A group of people got tired of waiting, abruptly left and we slipped into the gap. It was a tight fit and because I was the shortest, I was laying my torso on the stone bridge. Having grown up with my cousins, I didn't think anything of us being jammed so close together. I felt one of my cousins lay down the length of my back with her head resting on her arms across my shoulders. The river parade started. The vanguard was Recon Marines from the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion - USMC Reserves. They were laying down in low profile, rowing with oars in a small, rubber inflatable boat used to move silently in rivers and on coastlines. I said "that's so cool". My cousin says "that's stupid. I thought that was a little weird.We watched a good chunk of the parade, before we agreed to walk over to the Carnival. As we're walking, (I'm 99% sure it was my cousin Lupe) my cousin says "Soooo, who was your friend!?!". I have no idea who or what they're talking about. They all start teasing me along the lines of "it's okay, lover boy. You can tell us about your girlfriend". Me = completely confused."You know. The girl who came and laid on your back.".Me: I thought it was one of you! They all laughed even harder. There's some ruca out there that doesn't even know how close she was to greatness…”

Albert Gonzales, a native of San Antonio, spent his early childhood and teen years living in several southside and westside neighborhoods. He studied business at Lanier High School and graduated in 2009. His first jobs were in banking where he worked as a teller. He left banking and served as a clerk preparing insurance coverage data for a retail pharmacy.

Gonzales drew and sketched in his spare time and was encouraged to become an artist by a total stranger who saw some of his drawings. He was intrigued by the idea of becoming an artist. Gonzales found desk work boring and decided to try his hand in creating art. After quitting his job, he began to paint. Unable to support himself as an artist, he spent months on the street sleeping at I-HOPs and other retail stores that remained open at night.

Upon selling his first paintings, he traveled to Philadelphia and New York to visit art museums and study the masters. In Philadelphia, he saw a Henri Matisse painting of a vase with flowers that took his breath away. He returned to San Antonio and began a series of paintings that he titled "Wabi Sabi" which he describes as a Japanese philosophy that can be translated to the idea of embracing the beauty of the imperfect, or in simple terms, perfectly imperfect.

His works largely represent flowers floating in a transparent vase, and he explained that he uses “water to tell a story of life by keeping the water in the vase in a constant fluid motion even though the vase is on a flat plane.” One of these interpretations is in his example, “We all have our ups and downs in life.”

Towne Twin Village

How do you solve the homeless problem? A question that really has no right or wrong answer. Do you move all the homeless to one side of town? Do you fine a person for sleeping in public or for setting up a temporary shelter. With homelessness on the rise here in San Anto I don't think we know the right answer to that question. But Fernando Velazquez the admin support specialist of Towne Twin Village gave La Prensa Texas a tour of how Towne Twin Village is going to help in their way. With over 2900 single individuals on the streets of San Anto, Towne Twin will help those who are on the streets. How is Towne Twin Village different from other organizations you may ask well Towne Twin Village is taking a holistic approach to community building in hopes of creating a

foundation of dignity and creating a therapeutic environment. One that promotes a natural support system through socializing and development of friendships with other residents, peer volunteers, PALs and neighbors. TTV will be a combination of 100 tiny homes, 24 rvs and 80 efficiency apartments in a variety of layouts and design all about 400 _500 sq ft in size. With on site peer volunteers who themselves have experienced homelessness helping and coaching a community that will provide permanent homes for approximately 200 people. With Phase 1 already completed Phase 2 and 3 are in the works, with gazebos, a community center, health clinic, library computer lab, gym, community kitchen, maintenance shop and more these tiny homes are anything but that.

Pop, Becky y Tony Elegidos Al Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

Con beneplacito la comunidad de San Antonio recibió la noticia de la elección al Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class 2023, de Gregg Popovich (Pop), entrenador en jefe y presidente de la franquicia Silver and Black Spurs de San Antonio, del guardia francés Tony Parker, quién vistió el uniforme Silver and Black, por espacio de 17 temporadas con Spurs, y de Becky Hammon, ex guardia estelar de los equipos Liberty de Nueva York y Stars de San Antonio, quien en 2014 se convirtió en la primera mujer en ser la única nombrada coach en el circuito masculino de la NBA con Spurs, donde posteriormente fue ascendida asistente de entrenador.

Los tres vestirá la chaqueta anaranjada durante eventos tradicionales a celebrarse durante el 11 y 12 de agosto en Connecticut y Massachusetts

sede del salón de la fama en mención. A ellos se unirán los también elegidos Dirk Nowitzki (nativo de Alemania), Paul Gasol (originario de España), y Dwyane Wade.

Tony Parker, ex guardia estelar de Spurs por 17 temporadas logró establecerse entre los grandes basquetbolistas del universo, llegó a Spurs en 2001 y sé retiró en 2018, jugando su última temporada con el club Hornets de Charlotte. Parker tiene las nacionalidades francés-americano.

Todo salió bien tras la oportunidad qué sé me dio con Spurs y ser entrenado por Pop. Ahora me toca compartir mis experiencias con jugadores pequeños y juveniles allá en Francia, dónde ya sé ha sembrado la semilla", apuntó Tony.

Becky Hammon, con nacionalidad americana-rusa, de 46 años de edad, con su

talentoso estilo de juego sé destacó jugando del 19992014 con los equipos Liberty de Nueva York (1999-2006), de 2007-2014 con Stars de Santonio. Siendo asistente de entrenador del 2014 al 2022, pasando a dirigir al equipo Aces de Las Vegas en 2022 ganando el campeonato de la WNBA y de pasó haber sido nombrada 2022 WNBA Coach of the Year.

The San Antonio Philharmonic Celebrates El Cinco de Mayo with the Avenida Guadalupe Association, the Mexican Consulate, Guadalupe Dancers and Azul Barrientos

The Avenida Guadalupe Association (AGA) continues its 30-year tradition of hosting a Cinco de Mayo Community Celebration by featuring the San Antonio Philharmonic, Guadalupe Dance Company and beloved San Antonio singer-songwriter Azul Barrientos in a grand performance on May 5, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The celebration will be at Plaza Guadalupe, 1327 Guadalupe Street on the historical near west side, and is free of charge. Registration is required at saphil.org/event/ cinco-de-mayo.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg will kick off the evening with an official proclamation, joined by other community leaders including Consul General de Mexico Ruben Minutti Zanatta who will offer words about the mutual history of Mexico and San Antonio.

Audiences will hear for the first time the song “Divino Amor” by Barrientos as well as symphonic arrangements of Mexican folk songs by San Antonio’s José Irizarry performed by Barrientos and the San Antonio Philharmonic. These include “El Relámpago,” “La Llorona,” “La Sandunga,” and “Cielito Lindo.” The Philharmonic orchestra will also perform well-known classics by Gerónimo Giménez, Franz von Suppé, and José Pablo Moncayo.

Additionally, the Guadalupe Dance Company will perform traditional Mexican folkloric dances to favorite songs including “Jarabe de Colima,” “Jarabe Tapatío” and “Avellanada.”

With her music, Azul Barrientos builds bridges between Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Mexico. She is devoted to preserving traditional songs from Latin America and exploring their diverse musical histories.

The Guadalupe Dance Company and Cultural Arts Center seek to cultivate, promote, and preserve

traditional and contemporary Chicano, Latino and Native American arts and culture through multidisciplinary programming.

Performing in the Cinco de Mayo Community Celebration helps fulfill the Philharmonic’s founding mission of presenting highquality orchestral performances and educational opportunities for San Antonio, in and beyond the concert hall. Its musicians seek to involve new audiences in the transformative power of music. The concert is funded in part by Bexar County.

The San Antonio Philharmonic was created in June of 2022 by musicians of the former San Antonio Symphony who were determined to keep the local tradition of professional classical music alive. During its inaugural season the Philharmonic has performed for 123 elementary schools in nine different high schools, reaching approximately 28,000 third through fifth graders.

Its season continues with two more classical concerts, May 12 and 13, and May 26 and 27 at First Baptist Church, downtown.

As Abel Ortiz followed the evening news about the horrific killing of 21 of his fellow Uvalde, Texas residents nearly a year ago, he knew that he would have to do something. Inaction was not an option. He knew two of the families who lost their children that day, and his two children had attended Robb Elementary where 19 children and two teachers had been murdered.

As an artist, Ortiz’s thoughts turned to painting a mural dedicated to the memory of those lost to this senseless tragedy. The healing idea came from his 1st grade tramatic experience where pencils and crayons helped him calm his fears of a new life in the United States. Soon, with the help of community activist Monica Maldonado and mental health professional Dr. George Meza, Ortiz committed to recruit artists to paint 21 murals in downtown Uvalde to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on May 24, 2022.

Art As Healing: The Uvalde Mural Project

when he was seven and his father worked on an Ozona ranch in West Texas. He attended a nearby elementary school. After his parents divorced, his mother moved the family to the border town of Del Rio, Texas where he finished middle and high school. Following high school graduation in Del Rio, Ortiz worked for several years at a local Holiday Inn cleaning and making small repairs.

Desiring to do something more meaningful and interesting, Ortiz left to study art at San Antonio College [SAC]. There he met fellow art student Cruz Ortiz and learned about the work of artists Jesse Trevino, Adam Hernandez, and Jesse Amado. He earned more than 100 hours at SAC before transferring to UTSA. Ortiz’s excellent academic record at UTSA earned him a scholarship at the University of Iowa where he first completed a Master’s in Art, followed by a Master’s in Fine Art the following year. He found a teaching post at Southwest Texas Junior College in 2003 and is now an Associate Professor of Art at that campus.

Dr. George Meza, a Los Angeles based Clinical Psychologist and an avid Chicano art collector, soon after the school killing, and they began planning how to raise funds to complete the 21 murals. Dr. Meza had learned of Ortiz’s plans to dedicate the murals to honor the Uvalde victims and reached out to him through social media. Dr. Meza organized an online auction of Chicano Art throught his Facebook group called Collectors of Chicano/LatinX Art & Allies. After raising $30,000, Ortiz and Meza reached out to Monica Maldonado of Austin to help. She organized another GoFundMe and raised over $12,000. She helped by identifying artists for the Uvalde project and served as Project Manager. Toward the end of the project, the Kelly Clarkson TV show donated $10,000 to help complete the murals.

Monica Maldonado, who founded the nonprofit MAS Cultura organization in Austin, was raised by an immigrant single mother. She noted on her website that her “inspiration is fueled by early childhood struggles.” She added that cultural preservation and celebration of Latino culture begins with accessibility and representation.

Maldlonado’s first art project in 2019 involved curating a pop art event showcasing photography of Austin’s Lowriders. Throughout 2020 and 2021, she organized murals, initiated events and programming, and volunteered in areas identified as underserved.

While working in Austin’s real estate industry, Maldonado identified weak links among artists needing resources to enhance their trade. Maldonado’s desire to support

and showcase the work of emerging and underrepresented Latino and Black artists led her to establish MAS Cultura in Austin. In 2021 she served as the Project Manager of Austin’s Inaugural Latino Art WKND, a three-day experience showcasing art from 65 Latino artists.

Maldonado wanted to be sure that the Uvalde families gave permission for the murals and that they would be involved in addressing the direction and focus of the art works. The mural team waited until the last funeral to start

reaching out to the families to attain permission in writing for the murals. The grieving families were asked to provide a list of their loved one’s favorite things and images they wanted to feature. Once permission was granted, Maldonado assigned each artist a subject. In every mural the focus is on the individual. In each mural of the 19 children, the child is surrounded by valued objects, such as a basketball, a team sport shirt, a teddy bear, or a pet.

Once the project was under way, the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. sent researchers to document the mural project and hired San Antonio photographer Al Rendon to record in film and video the painting process. Abel Ortiz told Smithsonian researchers that “The idea [is] to heal, at least to begin healing, to cope with the tragedy, or begin to cope with it, and to pay tribute, and to always honor the victims as a remembrance.”

Jack Morgan of Texas Public Radio observed that “The school shooting at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School not only stole children and teachers, but also a community’s sense of itself.” Morgan saw the artistic effort as one that would help heal the Uvalde residents. Houston artist Anat Ronen, who painted the mural of Tesa Maria Mata, told Morgan: “No amount of murals can ever change what happened. But the murals might affect the way forward, if only slightly. Art doesn’t change the horrific nature of the tragedy, but it helps people to cope with it, maybe as they try to continue with their lives.”

Alain de Botton and John Armstrong of the book Art as Therapy, suggest that “Art validates our sorrow.” Art can provide a different perspective or vantage point from “which to survey our own sadness and find a way to deal with it.” Art, they argue, helps us to “complete our own unformed thoughts and ideas.” The authors found that art has the capacity of recording and preserving emotions.

The artists put their hearts into their paintings. Texas is known for its scorching summers, and Uvalde temperatures sometimes reach 110 in July and August. Uloang, an Austin artist, referred to the heat in the middle of the day as “unberable.” He told reporter Morgan that he would arrive at the Maranda Gail Mathis mural site he worked on at 6 a.m., work until noon, come back at 7:30 p.m. and work until past midnight. He noted “and last night we were here till 5 a.m.” Nearby communities donated food and equipment. Moises Valdez in Carrizo Springs provided lift equipment every weekend over the summer of the mural project.

Calvert Breaks Ground on Sante 51

Commissioner Tommy Calvert, had a ground breaking of Sante 51, a Bexar County Satellite Office Building that will make county services closer to the booming population in northeast Bexar County. Mayor Al Suarez of Converse was also present as well as immediate past Justice of the Peace Rogelio Lopez along with the building’s designers and engineers—Vickery & Associates and Huitt-Zollars. This is the second building after a Sheriff’s Substation was built to improve response times.

Commissioner Calvert led the Court in allocating $16,909,800 for the Precinct 4 Satellite Building project. The County also allocated $4,450,000 for new road infrastructure at Rocket Lane. The groundbreaking is part of a 51 acres real estate master plan that includes hotels, restaurants, retail, office, commercial, and park space.

Commissioner Calvert chaired the effort to save Randolph Air Force Base from closure and the development is consistent with regulations set forth in the Randolph Joint Land Use Study.

The inside of the 2023 Kona, it’s getting some welcome updates, with new materials and finishes that give it a more premium look and feel. The new model comes with a range of features, including a larger infotainment screen, wireless charging, and more advanced safety features, such as blind spot monitoring,

lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. One of the most exciting new features in the 2023 Kona is the addition of Hyundai's Blue Link connected car system. This system allows owners to remotely start their vehicle, lock and unlock the doors, and access various other features using their smartphone. It also provides real-time vehicle diagnostics and maintenance alerts, which can help owners stay on top of their vehicle's maintenance needs. Honestly, you just are not going to find many of those premium features in a vehicle that lists for under 30 thousand dollars. In terms of fuel economy, the 2023 Kona is highly competitive to the other sub compact models being offered by other manufactures. The base engine delivers an estimated 30 mpg combined, and the turbocharged engine delivering an estimated 28

mpg combined. These estimates are based on front-wheel drive models, and the fuel economy may vary slightly for all-wheel drive models.
