Sheriff Salazar investigation: Is it the right thing to do?

Tonight, I received a call asking who the sheriff thought he was launching an investi gation into the circumstances surrounding Gov. Ron DeSantis' choice to transport a group of migrants from San Antonio to Martha's Vineyard. The caller noted that our sheriff is a democrat and De Santis is a republican and this was the reason behind this investigation. “The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investiga tion into the migrants that were lured from the Migrant Resource Center, located in Bexar County, TX, and flown to Florida, where they were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha’s Vineyard, MA,” the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office tweeted. Commissioner Tommy Calvert as always, gave an amazing Keynote Speech! Great performances as it was not boring! The pictures and the SMILES tell the story!

Jenelle Esparza: A Latina Artist Creating Narrative Through Her Weaving

za experienced an artistic transformational moment when she set aside her training as a photographer, painter, printer, and digi tal artist to take weaving classes at the Southwest School of Art in San An tonio. Learning to weave came naturally to her. She told Lauren Moya Ford of the online Texas visual arts magazine Glasstire: “It was familiar in a way, like I used to know how to do it, and was just relearning it.” The classes paid off. In her 2018 ArtPace Residency, Esparza initiated her first major conceptual woven artwork. Esparza so enjoyed making the large, wall-sized cotton tapestries for the Artpace exhibit that she has now focused completely on weaving as her art practice.

Jenelle Esparza's inclu sion in “Artists Looking at Art,” a recent exhibit at the McNay Museum of Art, demonstrated an ability to link woven patterns to her Mexican American past. She traced three generations of ancestors on her mater nal grandmother’s side to cotton farming. Their work as cotton pickers inspired her to weave textiles and reconstruct found objects to tell her ancestral story of hard work, isolation, and exploi tation. This artistic narrative resonates with me personal ly since my parents and four grandparents also worked in

the cotton fields of South Texas in their youth.

Esparza grew up in the South Texas community of Corpus Christi. Her artistic father encouraged creative development, and early in her childhood, he gave his daughter a 35mm camera. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Del Mar Community College.

Esparza took part-time jobs as a cook to pay for her tuition. Her main focus at Del Mar College lay in the art classes, and when she moved to San Antonio in 2008 to attend the Univer sity of Texas-San Antonio she continued to major in art.

Esparza based her de cision to remain in San Antonio after finishing her art degree partly because the Alamo city has been

cultivating a reputation of being highly receptive to Latino artists. During my years as President of UTSA, I had the opportunity to add more than 2,000 art pieces to UTSA’s libraries and of fice walls, the majority by Latino artists. The City of San Antonio Cultural Arts Program and the University Health System acquired thousands of artworks over the past ten years, including several of her recent weav ing pieces. Esparza has also found support for her work from Blue Star and the Mc Nay Contemporary Art Museum, and early in her career she received Grants from the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture [NALAC] as well as a summer Residency from ArtPace. Young artists like Esparza

often have to take many different paths to achieve success in their fields of en deavor. There are demands associated with participating in exhibits and the constant worries of selling one’s art. Many graduates of university art programs or art schools start as interns and few encoun ter well-paying work in the early years. Esparza was fortunate to find an internship and a full-time job with Chuck Mauer, a well-respected photog rapher in San Antonio. She worked for Mauer’s Alternative Ink shop from 2010-2012, then left to pursue freelance work. In 2016 she took a position as Museum Educator, Family

Experiences as part of the public education outreach initiative of the McNay Art Museum.

Esparza’s weaving is not traditional. She often refers to her creative process as experimental and concep tual. Although she is an admirer of the Navajo and Oaxacan weavers, her style is unique; she designs and weaves her own version of a blanket or rug. At times the work does not even resemble a blanket or rug. She gives deep thought to the narrative she wishes to tell. Her mind is filled with stories connected to her family history and the family’s relationships with cotton. Thus, each of her

weavings has a narrative behind it. She draws on the stories her father and grandparents told her when she was a young girl.

Esparza has preserved numerous tools related to her family’s farming and their ordeals as cotton pick ers. She keeps a small plow and several other farming tools that belonged to her grand father in the small studio behind her home. She has drawings of the notorious short hoe called “el cortito” by cotton workers. The cot ton workers hated the short hoe because it required that they bend low to the ground to weed or harvest crops growing only inches from

the soil. She has studied the history of “el cortito.” She knows that through the efforts of the United Farm workers Union and farm labor leader, Cesar Chavez, California passed a law banning the short hoe’s use in the fields. In her new ex hibit at the Kinfolk House in Fort Worth, Esparza con nects some of the farm tools with her weavings.

Esparza’s role as coowner of Presa House, an art gallery in Southtown that she operates with her partner, Rigoberto Luna, enables her to promote the artwork of other emerging artists from the region. She is generous in acknowledg ing Luna’s connections

with artists and his major role in preparing the Presa House exhibits. In a recent exhibit I attended at Presa House, the Luna-Esparza team showcased the artwork of Latino artists from Albuquerque, New Mexico and San Diego, California.

Glasstire online magazine author, Lauren Moya Ford, commended Esparza for her commitment to finding the “hidden histories of Mexican American, Tejano, and Indigenous narratives in her home region of South Texas.” South Texas is full

of rich stories of conquest, settlement, and develop ment. Jenelle Esparza’s ability to use art to convey some of these narratives makes the observer reflect on the diverse social and economic contributions to Borderlands history.

¡Honor a quien honor merece!

Esta semana, se celebró la Gala de nuestro periódico, en la que se ha hecho honor y muy bien merecido, a individuos cuyo mérito es indudable. Y a quienes no mencio nare en esta pequeña columna, pues ustedes podrán leer acerca de ellos, en otras partes del periódico.

Pero al pensar en quién o quiénes, merecen nuestro reconocimien to…La lista comienza a crecer.

Hace algunos años, fui presidente de la en tonces Sociedad Medica Hispana de San An tonio, y decidí que era necesaria una “Noche de Reconocimiento” ¡y sí que lo vi complicado! Así que, aunque fuera humildemente con una placa de mérito de nues tra sociedad, se honró, no solamente al mundi almente famoso inventor del ‘cardiac stent’ (¡Así es, fue un médico español, en San Anto nio, el inventor!). Pero también al reconocido Profesor universitario; Y a colegas que habían pasado muchos años, en lo que yo llamo ‘las trin cheras de la medicina’; Y a Quijotes que donan su tiempo dinero y esfuerzo, como embajadores de

salud a otros lugares más necesitados; Y… la lista creció.

En este país, se hace siempre honor al cuerpo militar. “Gracias por su servicio”, descuentos, prioridades, becas de estudios. Pero, aun así, a veces las recompensas se quedan cortas, dado el precio que algunos pagan.

¿Y el cuerpo de Policía? Sobre todo, en estos tiempos en los que no me imagino como pu eden funcionar, con la responsabilidad de man tener el orden y nuestra seguridad, en medio de las controversias en que se mueven, y aun con la preocupación de ser vistos como enemigos, en lugar de aliados

¿Y qué hay de los mae stros? Muchos de ellos, han pasado casi toda su vida al frente de un salón, cuidando y educando a nuestros hijos, y en al guna forma, ayudando a modelar nuevas genera ciones

¿Y qué hay de los/ las abuelos/as y a veces hasta bisabuelos?, Muchos de ellos, a pesar de sus propias limitaciones, hacen frente a la necesidad, que por dife rentes razones les con vierte en responsables de sus nietos. Y tantas veces tienen que dejar

de trabajar, o por el contrario, regresar a tra bajar, cuando ya tenían derecho a descansar, para mantener y cuidar a esos pequeños, que no tuvieron la culpa de su situación.

¿Y qué hay de los trabajadores de emergencia ‘first responders’, que corren hacia el peli gro, donde los demás huyen de él?

¿Y que hay de los trabajadores de la con strucción? Entes anóni mos, que nos permiten viajar en una carretera suave, o vivir en un sitio acogedor; cuando ellos han tenido que trabajar bajo el calcinante calor, o el frío, o la lluvia.

¿Y qué hay de todos esos otros traba jadores? Aquellos que nos permiten llegar a un hogar, o a una oficina limpia, y/o recoger a los niños de un sitio donde sabemos que están seguros y que en ocasiones son la ayuda que permiten a muchos otros individuos poder trabajar en otras tantas áreas.

¿Y qué hay de… tan tos héroes anónimos ‘unsung heroes’? Para todos ustedes… Me quito el sombrero, y hago una reverencia.

El EA también estuvo disponible para revisión pública en las oficinas de Desarrollo Rural del USDA, así como en Alamo River Ranch HoldCo, LLC y Alamo River Ranch Operating Company, LLC; Oficinas de Alamo River RV Resort & Campground. No se recibieron comentarios.

Basado en su EA, los compromisos asumidos por Alamo River Ranch HoldCo, LLC y Alamo River Ranch Operating Company, LLC; Alamo River RV Resort & Campground, y los comentarios públicos recibidos, RBS ha concluido que el proyecto no tendría un impacto significativo (o ningún impacto) en la calidad del agua, los humedales, las llanuras aluviales, el uso de la tierra, la estética, el transporte o la salud y seguridad humanas.

El proyecto propuesto no tendrá ningún efecto adverso en los recursos enumerados o elegibles para su inclusión en el Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos. La Agencia también ha llegado a la conclusión de que no es probable que el proyecto propuesto afecte a las especies amenazadas y en peligro de extinción incluidas en la lista federal o al hábitat crítico designado de las mismas. El proyecto propuesto no afectaría de manera desproporcionada a las poblaciones minoritarias y/o de bajos ingresos.

No se han identificado otros posibles impactos significativos resultantes del proyecto propuesto. Por lo tanto, RBS ha determinado que este FONSI cumple con sus obligaciones bajo la Ley Nacional de Política Ambiental, según enmendada (42 U.S.C. 4321 y siguientes), el Consejo de Regulaciones de Calidad Ambiental (40 CFR §§ 1500-1508) y las Políticas y Procedimientos Ambientales de Desarrollo Rural del USDA (7 CFR Parte 1970) para su acción relacionada con el proyecto.

RBS está satisfecho de que los impactos ambientales del proyecto propuesto se hayan abordado adecuadamente. La acción federal de RBS no resultaría en impactos significativos en la calidad del medio ambiente humano, y como tal, no preparará una Declaración de Impacto Ambiental para su acción relacionada con el proyecto propuesto.
