Let’s Talk About It The Good Old Days

By Yvette Tello My favorite memories as a child were family gatherings with my cousins on both sides of my family and my grandparents. We had large families on both sides and we all knew each other well.

Nowadays, families don't know each other or get together often as a whole. After a family reunion, I had someone reach out and tell me they almost dated one of my sons.

They were distant cousins! I have lots of little cousins who have had children and I have never met them. Thank God for Facebook because I get to see them growing up through their posts. Does your family keep in touch like you did when you were younger?

Norma Sanchez Martinez: “The sad thing is all our family is distant from each other and we only gather together during funerals and it shouldn't be that way when my Grandma Esperanza and Grandpa Francisco were alive everyone and I mean everyone gathered at their house.

We had cookouts, or my grandma made menudo or some other meal and everyone showed up. All of us cousins were so close now I'm lucky if I even see one. The only way most of us keep in touch is through social media if that. Oh how I wish things could be like it use to be.My kids don't even know a lot of their cousins, uncles, or aunts or my family's kids don't even know me”

Annabelle Perez Martinez: “I too have a large unknown family. Sad but true” Chris Castillo: “I wish we did keep in touch and have gatherings like when growing up. Now it's basically through fb as opposed to in person get togethers. It's sad because as cousins we'd gather at our grandma's house for holidays etc. No more grandma and no more gatherings. My grandmother was known on the Westside for her extravagant Christmas decorations. The place to visit was her house on 24th and Travis. We loved it during Christmas. Miss the good old days with my family.”

Sally Keen: “Yes, when I was young until about 6 of 7, my mom's family (she had 2 sisters and 3 or 4 brothers, I think) and we all seemed to me to be very close. We had big family picnics and we all attended my Grandfather's church together, I knew and played with my cousins.

Mostly my Aunt Sally & Auntie Leecha kids cuz I think the other cousins were much older, but we hung out with our cousins. But for my family that all stopped about age 7. Auntie Leecha moved out west, and then Papa too.

Now I really only barely know my Aunt Sally’s kids by face. I would not even recognize any of my other cousins if I saw them on the street .

My older siblings know more of them. Lydia Curran and Davey especially so.”

Trisha Ann Mendiola: “My heart breaks everyday at the loss of the old ways. I have a difficult time dealing with the loss of my relationships with both my brother and sister. Those hurt the most.”

Ray Nuñez: “My family doesn't either. It's a shame.

I've even had so called family not do the proper thing and just talk, but things are what they are now. Just take it day by day. Always pray everyone well regardless.”

Jazmin D Zuñiga: “Family?

Nowadays even our children have lost the sense of what a family is. I have a large family and it's sad to say some nieces got married and only the husband's family is who they see; not even their grandma(my mom)do they visit. Now it's the chisme, envy, hypocrisy and the hate in families. People are hurting each other! Yesterday on the news, a guy killed his brother. This world is out of control. Family is those that stick around for better or for worse and luckily some are not blood related, to me that's the meaning of family.”

Manny Santana Montilla: “We are a military family so the concept of family became bonding with people we didn't know existed. It's made better people for my children since they are more accepting and well rounded kids that see the world colorless and raceless. Though they have felt out of place when dealing with families that grew up together and are more territorial and maintain inner circles that just can't be broken from outsiders like us. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

There is always one more hill to climb. But I'm proud of their accomplishments both in and out of the military.

They are doing great things for their childrens’ and families' futures.”

Ricardo Montalban (1920-2009)

Known by fans throughout the world for his beautiful baritone voice, Ricardo Montalban has been in the forefront of film and television. Perhaps best known for his portrayal of Mr. Roarke on “Fantasy Island,” Montalban was a famed actor in Mexico prior to signing a seven-year contract in 1947 to MGM where he worked with such legends as Frank Sinatra, Lana Turner and Clark Gable. In 1969, he helped fund Nosotros to fight stereotyping of Latinos in film and television.

Though he suffered backlash, Montalban persevered and, in 1993, was presented the 29th Screen Actors Guild Achievement Award for fostering the finest ideals of the acting profession.

Hyde, M.A. This week’s cover art is by the late Apolonia Susana Santos (1954-2006) who spent 20 years of her life as a dedicated active organizer of environmental summits and cultural events. These public and intertribal events were educational and civic responses to legislation on Indigenous Peoples’ and broader civil liberties protections.

From her signature hats and contagious giggle to her Warrior like determination, Apolonia Susana Santos leaves us all with a call to action to do more, to be more and to find the Artist and Activist in all of us.

As a 2006 Honoree of the First Peoples Fund, it was said of Susana: “Through sharing her skills and talents with others, especially the youth, she has assisted directly in the transformation of many lives through artistic expression, cultural teaching and by providing valuable information she has learned along her path about caring for our Mother Earth and all she provides.” —S. A Pacific Northwest Native American Artist, Activist, Art and Cultural Liaison, Indigenous Warrior, prolific painter, sculptor, serigrapher and writer, Apolonia leaves a legacy of creative vision for the Indigenous World and a call to action. Susana’s paintings and serigraphs often contain the dramatic and diverse landscape and sky of the High Desert, Snowstorms and the elements of wind, water, Sun and Moon appear with vigor. Her artistic interpretation of Salmon, Coyote and BigHorn Sheep express how strongly she was connected to her homelands.

Interpretation of Native Women and Men in Traditional dress always has a contemporary flair.

Her desire to preserve Indigenous ways and memory is apparent in her artwork and her activism.

Apolonia’s untimely passing at age 52, leaves a void in the world of Native American Art. Though small in stature, she stood large in life as she painted, sculpted and created strategies toward social change for Native Youth.

She fought diligently to protect traditional fishing and sovereignty rights of her People.

A member of the Tygh Band and Yakama Nation, her ancestral homelands are located along the Des Chutes River at Tlxni (Falls of a Woman’s Hair) also called Shearers Bridge. She held great pride in her Traditional fishing family and encouraged all who fished to respect the River and the Salmon. She was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Oregon

College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon, Apolonia Susana Santos returned to the Reservation to help her community, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

Santos established the Kah-nee-ta Gallery of Art at the High Desert Resort and Casino encouraging local artists to not only present their work in this public forum but also to stretch and grow artistically.

She established a Native youth summer arts program coordinated with the Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC) for Warm Springs youth to study in Portland. This program, known as the A. Susana Santos Journeys in Creativity, has grown over time and now includes Native youth in the Portland area and from other Oregon Tribes.

As Art and Cultural Liaison for the Warm Springs Tribe, Susana authored Tribal Initiatives that included her vision for an Artists Village Complex with artist painting and printmaking studios,

sound, film and video studios and an Indigenous Medicine Lodge.

She inspired many people in Warm Springs and throughout the N.W. to come together and complete these projects.

He is the co-founder of SATXrated, a local influencer page on social media and nuevo co-owner of Big Hops brew house in New Braunfels. Audi Paredes, Army veteran and Thomson are longtime friends and the new owners of the 4th branch in the Big Hops franchise and they hope to bring a fun, familia environment along with great cerveza and new jobs to the NB area.

Paredes and Thomson both dreamed of becoming business owners and as avid beer connoisseurs, a taproom was a no brainer!

The grand opening is expected to happen in early November and they will offer Tejas beers with a few non-Texan beers along with wine at their new location. Thomson plans on keeping SATX-rated alive and well while also juggling

Latino Bookstore Opens in the Westside Photos by Dr. Ricardo Romo

The Guadalupe Latino bookstore and gift shop will be open during regular business hours throughout the year to serve the surrounding community, the entire city and as a destination on stop for tourists from the region and beyond.

The bookstore is also built on the rich literary history of San Antonio.

This legacy is honored with the appointment of a literary padrino Tomás Ybarra-Frausto, and a literary madrina Texas poet laureate Carmen Tafolla. La Industria de los Videojuegos Expande los Recursos de los Padres para las Familias que Hablan Español Por Sandra B. La Entertainment Software Association (ESA) y la Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) anunciaron hoy el lanzamiento de un nuevo recurso en línea en español que brinda a los padres y tutores información y herramientas para ayudar a administrar los videojuegos que juegan sus hijos.

El nuevo recurso, VamosaJugar.com, (que se traduce como "Let's Play" en inglés) proporciona información en español sobre el sistema de clasificación de tres partes de la ESRB y los controles parentales para que las familias puedan controlar qué juegan los niños, con quién juegan y durante cuánto tiempo y si pueden gastar dinero en juegos o compras dentro del juego. El recurso también incluye contenido para ayudar a los padres y tutores de habla Hispana a tomar decisiones informadas sobre los videojuegos que juegan sus familias.

Spurs con éxito abren pretemporada vs El Utah Jazz en el estadio AT&T Center Por Franco Gregg Popovich entrenador en jefe del plantel San Antonio Spurs (Los Spurs), en su 26a temporada con 22 clasificaciones a los playoffs en la Conferencia del Oeste de la NBA, y con 5 trofeos ganados en finales.

En su primer partido de pretemporada en su estadio AT&T Center, con éxito abrió las acciones ante el visitante Utah Jazz dirigido por Quin Snyder, qué perdió con pizarra de 111-85 ante un estadio

abierto qué cumplió con el protocolo de salubridad.

Los miles de aficionados sé divirtieron a lo máximo observando las espectaculares acciones, así cómo visitando la tienda de los Spurs, y los puestos de variados menús.

Pará la empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E por corto), fue todo un éxito de qué la noble afición retornara al estadio qué ahora cuenta con todos los requisitos sanitarios qué rigen en cada plaza de la

CCDV Lanza Purple Porch SA Para Destacar La Familiar Violencia En San Antonio Y Promover Relaciones Saludables Por Carol Schliesinger La Comisión Colaborativa sobre Violencia Doméstica (CCDV) está pidiendo a los residentes que participen en una campaña en todo el condado como parte del Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre la Violencia Doméstica.

La iniciativa Purple Porch SA invita al público a arrojar luz sobre la violencia doméstica al encender las luces de su porche de color púrpura este octubre para conmemorar el Mes de Concientización sobre la Violencia Doméstica.

"La campaña Purple Porch SA es una excelente manera para que la comunidad se una para romper el estigma de hablar sobre la violencia en nuestros hogares, fomentar conversaciones abiertas y honestas entre vecinos y ayudar a quienes sufren violencia doméstica a saber que no están solos. ", dijo el juez Mónica Díaz con el 150° Juzgado Civil de Distrito, Co-Presidente de la CCDV. El condado de Bexar se ubica constantemente entre los cinco condados principales de Texas en homicidios relacionados con la violencia doméstica.

Tres de cada 10 mujeres embarazadas sufren algún tipo de abuso. Honoring Latino Military Heroes

By Ricardo Romo PhD Every American war has produced Latino heroes. In the American Revolution, General George Washington counted on the help of Spanish colonists living thousands of miles away from the battlefront. For example, General Bernardo de Galves, a Spanish Army Officer and Governor of Louisiana, in 1777 sided with Washington’s Revolutionary Army and contributed to America’s fight for independence.

General de Galves’s major military contribution was to force the British armies to fight on several fronts, weakening the British military position in the English colonies. Military historian Virgil Fernandez wrote that de Galves “captured all the British forts along the Mississippi River” and later drove the British forces out of Florida. For his contributions, the Republic of Mexico honored his namesake when they founded the Port of Galveston in 1825.

It comes as a surprise to many Latinos that General de Galves’s remarkable war efforts, defeating British armies in the Lower Mississippi and Florida territory, have never been recognized by the United States Department of Defense which is responsible for the naming of military bases and naval ships.

However, with the creation of the new “ Naming Commission,” past negligence may be corrected.

The Military Times reported that the recent U.S. National Defense Authorization Act required the Department of Defense “to stand up a commission and rename all Confederate ‘items’ which included not only posts and ships but street names, buildings,” and other Confederate memorials by fall 2023.

General Bernardo de Galves is one of the many Latino heroes that should be considered in the renaming of bases and ships.

We are reminded that de Galves was honored by Mexico in 1825 when Texas was part of the Republic of Mexico, but the Republic of Texas [founded in 1836] and the State of Texas [founded in 1845] have made no efforts to recognize General de Galves.

In a previous report, I commented on my nominations to the newly created Naming Commission Cleto Rodriguez, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient, and Brig. General Richard Cavazos, the U.S. Army’s first Latino fourstar general. In addition to these two outstanding individuals, there are several other Latino military heroes that deserve consideration. to retired journalist Joseph Contreras for recommending that I look into the career of U.S. Commander Everett Alvares, Jr. [Ret.] On August 5, 1964, during the first hours of the Vietnam War, Everett Alvarez, Jr.’s A-4 Skyhawk was shot down near the Gulf of Tonkin. Alvarez, the first aviator taken captive by the North Vietnamese, endured eight years and seven months of captivity. He was the second longest-held U.S. prisoner

of war [POW] in U.S. history. While interned at the Hoa Lo Prison, famously known at the “Hanoi Hilton,” he was repeatedly beaten and tortured.

Alvarez, a native of Salinas, California, is the grandson of Mexican immigrants and attended high school with former NFL Pro quarterback, Joe Kapp. Reporter Dennis Taylor wrote that Joe Kapp is often remembered as “as a hardscrabble little kid who lived

to play sports, scrapped with neighborhood bullies and shined shoes on East Alisal Street, two bucks a pair, alongside his friend, Everett Alvarez Jr.” Alvarez attended Santa Clara University on an academic scholarship and joined the U.S. Navy in 1960 shortly after graduating with a degree in engineering. He re-enlisted after three years and was the first aviator captured in the Vietnam War. Following his release in February

1973, he earned a Master’s Degree in Operations Research and Systems Analyst and a Juris Doctorate degree from George Washington School of Law. Alvarez also holds numerous military decorations including the Silver Star, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts.

I suggest that in addition to considering the nomination of U.S. Commander Evert Alvarez, Jr., the Naming Commission should consider re-naming a base or a military facility for Hector P. Garica, founder of the American G.I. Forum and a World War II veteran.

Dr. Hector P. Garcia had just completed his medical residency in 1942 when he joined the U.S. Army.

With degrees from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston and a residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, Garcia was well trained in the field of medicine.

Despite his excellent credentials, Garcia’s first assignment was the command of infantry followed by command of a company of combat engineers. Finally, the Army got it right and transferred him to the medical corps in his last two years of service. Dr. Garcia served with distinction earning the Bronze Star Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Dr. Garcia grew up in Mercedes, Texas but upon

11 his discharge from military service, he opened a medical practice with his brother in Corpus Christi, Texas. He made friends with many of the returning veterans and learned of the many difficulties that Latino veterans encountered in applying for G.I. Bill benefits. Alarmed by the many problems veterans reported encountering with government agencies, Dr. Garcia started the first chapter of the American G.I. Forum in 1948. The G.I. Forum is a civil-rights organization devoted to securing equal rights for Latinos. Initially, the organization dealt with securing earned benefits from the Veterans Administration guaranteed through the G.I. Bill of Rights of 1944. The Forum later also focused on civil rights.

In addition, Dr. Garcia is credited with the founding of Viva Kennedy clubs across the nation in the 1960 presidential campaign. He became the first Mexican American to be appointed as a U.N. Ambassador and also served on the United States Commission on Civil Rights.

In 1984 Dr. Garcia was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1996 Dr. Garcia passed away after a long illness.

His major legacy, the American G.I. Forum, remains active across the nation in preserving fairness, equality, and justice across all areas of American society.

Gente vs.Combustibles Fósiles: Movilización en la Casa Blanca, 11-15 de Octubre Por Jennifer K. Falcon La movilización está siendo organizada por Build Back Fossil Free, una coalición de cientos de organizaciones indígenas, negras, ambientales, de justicia climática, jóvenes y de justicia social. .

Los participantes en la acción incluirán miembros destacados de la resistencia a los combustibles fósiles, que representan diferentes luchas que se están llevando a cabo en todo el país, desde la lucha contra el oleoducto de la Línea 3 en Minnesota hasta la campaña contra las instalaciones de exportación de petróleo y gas en la Costa del Golfo.

La movilización involucrará cinco días de protestas y desobediencia civil en la Casa Blanca, con el potencial de acciones adicionales en toda el área de Washington, DC.

A Hope That Runs

By Julie Marin There remains much debate and uncertainty surrounding the strickest abortion ban passed recently in Texas. The repercussions have already touched places such as Planned Parenthood and, specifically, Whole Woman’s Health Alliance in Fort Worth who managed to serve 25 patients before their proposed deadline the moment they were given the update on the order. The state has decided to place control into the hands of private citizens who deem a case fit enough to award a $10,000 bounty for an abortion carried out after 6 weeks by anyone.

The ACLU along with other non-profits and grassroots organizations across the country are leading the fight to restore balance regarding an individual’s ownership of their own bodily autonomy.

Recognizing the level of focus needed to ensure a healthy momentum, Barbie Hurtado affirms a successful turnout this Saturday as one of the lead organizers marching for the restoration of safe and accessible abortion practices. She was assisted by Giomara who organized the chant for reproductive rights. She states, “We have been doing the work and will continue to march with the help of the

community and appointed peacekeepers.”

Her prediction proved truthful as the turnout was quite outstanding.

On the morning of October 2, 2021 more than 2,000 people gathered at Milam park on different sides of the abortion topic and stated their presence in unison. The orange shirts were of many and a group of women were seen dressed in handmaid’s tale robes despite the request to refrain from the imagery.

SAPD monitored on horseback despite Hurtado’s clear indication that there was no affiliation with the police for this event.

Although the U.S. was quick to sue the state of Texas shortly after the decision was made, the case still sits within the 5th circuit. The marches that took place nationwide assisted the sense of hope that Roe V.S. Wade will not be overturned.
