arsha Blackburn ganó la gobernación de Tennessee en las elecciones del martes 3 de noviembre y asumirá en enero con una agenda de endurecimiento migratorio. Su Miguel Cardozo triunfo la convertirá en la La Prensa Latina primera mujer gobernadora del estado y genera interrogantes para familias hispanas, especialmente aquellas con integrantes indocumentados. Blackburn derrotó a la demócrata Jerri Green por menos de tres puntos. Los resultados preliminares le dieron alrededor del 45.5% de los votos, frente al 43% de Green; el independiente David Hatley obtuvo cerca del 9.3%. La inmigración fue central en su campaña. En un anuncio, Blackburn prometió: “Como gobernadora, deportaré a los inmigrantes ilegales”. De acuerdo con las autoridades, el fuego se reportó alrededor de las 6:24 de la mañana del jueves 29 de octubre, en una casa ubicada en la cuadra 3200 de Coleman Avenue. from the Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to a report of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers found Micheal Cook lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Louis Bynum was also found at the scene and was subsequently identified as the person allegedly responsible for the homicide. According to the police report, a witness identified Bynum as the individual who shot Cook. The witness stated that they saw the 78-year-old man demand that the victim pay him six dollars. When Cook refused, Bynum allegedly threatened him, pulled out a revolver, and opened fire. According to the same account, after Cook fell to the ground, the accused continued to shoot him several more times.

JUDE INICIA LA CONSTRUCCIÓN EN COLLIERVILLE DE SU “DREAM HOME” 2027 St. Jude breaks ground on its 2027 Dream Home in Collierville (LPL) – La construcción de la casa que formará parte de la campaña 2027 del St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital “Dream Home Giveaway” comenzó oficialmente el pasado 02 de noviembre con una ceremonia de inicio de obras (groundbreaking ceremony) en Collierville. La casa será de cuatro habitaciones y formará parte de la iniciativa anual de recaudación de fondos del St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. La venta de boletos para participar en el sorteo comenzará en marzo de 2027, mientras que el ganador se dará a conocer durante el sorteo programado para junio de ese año. La ceremonia contó con la presencia de autoridades municipales y representantes de la comunidad, entre ellos la alcaldesa de Collierville, Maureen Fraser, y el jefe del Departamento de Policía, Dale Lane, quienes acompañaron a los organizadores y colaboradores en el inicio de este nuevo proyecto. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Ticket sales for the giveaway will begin in March 2027, and the winner will be announced during the drawing scheduled for June of that year. The ceremony was attended by municipal officials and community representatives—including Collierville Mayor Maureen Fraser and Police Chief Dale Lane—who joined the organizers and collaborators to mark the start of this new project. The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is one of the institution’s primary fundraising initiatives. Through this project, builders, companies, sponsors, and volunteers join forces to construct homes, which are then awarded via a prize drawing for which tickets are sold to the public. The campaign has had a significant impact nationwide. Since its inception in 1991, the Dream Home program has raised more than $800 million to support the hospital’s mission.

as elecciones de mitad de mandato de 2026 han dejado un mensaje complejo para las comunidades inmigrantes en todo el Medio-Sur del país. But for immigrants in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, the political landscape remains challenging. Tennessee offers a particularly important example. Republican Marsha Blackburn’s victory in the governor’s race over Democrat Jerri Green signals continued Republican leadership in a state where immigration enforcement has become a significant political priority. Blackburn has publicly supported expanding Tennessee’s cooperation with ICE, including through 287(g) agreements that allow participating local law enforcement agen-

cies to perform certain federal immigration enforcement functions. For immigrant families in Memphis, Nashville, and surrounding communities, these political decisions are not abstract. They affect whether parents feel safe taking their children to school, whether workers report to construction sites and restaurants, and whether families can access public services like obtaining a Drivers License at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) without fearing immigration consequences. A Democratic shift in Congress could influence federal immigration policy in several ways. Congressional majorities have significant authority over appropriations, oversight hearings, legislation, and federal agency accountability. A new balance of power could increase scrutiny of detention conditions, enforcement practices, immigration arrests, and the use of private detention facilities. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is
another area where congressional action could make a meaningful difference. The Trump administration has moved to terminate TPS protections for nationals of several countries, creating uncertainty for families who have lived and worked in the United States for many years. Congress could amend the TPS statute to provide stronger safeguards against abrupt terminations, establish clearer extension requirements, restore meaningful judicial review, and create permanent immigration pathways for individuals who have maintained long-standing TPS protection and established roots in the United States. The 2026 elections have created an opportunity for Democrats, who now control both chambers of Congress, to increase oversight of federal immigration enforcement and pursue legislative changes. But meaningful progress will require more than congressional hearings and political statements. It will require legislation, sustained oversight, and accountability.

She recounted that, in 2021, U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehended her just minutes after she had crossed the border. The caravan began to take shape about 20 days ago through digital platforms and WhatsApp groups, where participants discussed the meeting point, the date of departure, and the challenges they might face during this exodus. The migrants have chosen to travel as a group—largely on foot—to protect themselves from crime and to save on transportation costs throughout a journey that will take them to the U.S. border.
