Aunque la narrativa tradicional suele centrarse en los padres fundadores de 1776, la realidad es que Estados Unidos ha sido moldeado desde sus orígenes por la migración. Mucho antes de la independencia, ya existían comunidades hispanas en

territorios que hoy forman parte del país, especialmente en el suroeste, donde el legado español y mexicano sigue presente en la cultura, la arquitectura y el idioma. Hoy, los hispanos representan una de las fuerzas demográficas más importantes del país. Según datos del U.S. Census Bureau, más de 65 millones de hispanos viven en Estados Unidos, lo que equivale aproximadamente al 19% de la población total, convirtiéndolos en el grupo minoritario más grande del país. Además, la comunidad inmigrante en general representa cerca del 14% de la población, con más de 45 millones de personas nacidas en el extranjero. El aporte hispano es evidente en todos los sectores. In 2026, the United States prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of its independence—a historic milestone that invites us not only to celebrate the country’s founding but also to reﬂect on those who have helped build it over the course of two and a half centuries. Among these pivotal groups, the Hispanic and immigrant communities hold a central place in the nation’s history, economy, and cultural identity. Although the traditional narrative often focuses on the Founding Fathers of 1776, the reality is that the United States has been shaped by migration since its very origins. Long before independence, Hispanic communities already existed in territories that are now part of the country—particularly in the Southwest, where the Spanish and Mexican legacy remains evident in culture, architecture, and language. Today, Hispanics represent one of the country’s most significant demographic forces. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, more than 65 million Hispanics live in the United States—roughly 19% of the total population—making them the nation’s largest minority group. Furthermore, the immigrant community as a whole accounts for nearly 14% of the population, comprising more than 45 million foreign-born individuals. Hispanic contributions are evident across all sectors. Economically, immigrant workers form an essential part of the workforce in fields such as construction, agriculture, healthcare, and services. Studies by the American Immigration Council estimate that immigrants contribute more than $2 trillion to the U.S. GDP annually, driving economic growth and domestic consumption. In the cultural realm, Hispanic inﬂuence is even more visible. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, with over 42 million na-

tive speakers—not counting those who speak it as a second language. Music, cuisine, art, and sports reﬂect a deep integration that has transformed the country’s cultural identity. However, the migration landscape of recent years has been marked by political and social tensions. Since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, his administration has resumed a stricter immigration policy, focusing on increased deportations and the expansion of state laws aimed at restricting undocumented immigrants’ access to public services. According to Department of Homeland Security data, deportations have risen significantly in recent years, driven by a more aggressive focus on local operations and cooperation with state authorities. At the same time, several states have passed laws tightening eligibility requirements for social benefits, education, and healthcare, sparking concern among immigrant communities. Civil rights organizations have warned that these policies could create a “chilling effect,” causing families to avoid ac-

cessing basic services for fear of being reported to immigration authorities. Recent incidents—such as the attempt in Tennessee to link child health programs with immigration status verification— have ignited a national debate regarding the boundaries between public safety and human rights. Against this backdrop, the 250th anniversary offers an opportunity to re-examine the nation’s history from a more inclusive perspective. Community leaders and scholars agree that the United States cannot be understood without the contributions of the millions of immigrants who have worked, built, educated, and transformed the nation over generations. Beyond oﬃcial symbols and celebrations, the true legacy of these 250 years lies in the country’s diversity. The history of the United States is, in large measure, a story of migration, resilience, and collective contribution. And within that story, the Hispanic community remains a key part of the country’s present and future.

UN HOMBRE MURIÓ Y DOS MENORES HERIDOS LUEGO DE PERSECUCIÓN POLICIAL QUE TERMINÓ EN ACCIDENTE EN LA SUMMER AVENUE Man dies, two minors injured following police chase that ended in crash on Summer Avenue (LPL) – A man died and two minors were injured following a police chase that culminated in a violent traffic crash on Tuesday afternoon in the Berclair neighborhood, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) reported. According to authorities, the incident began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle linked to an investigation. Instead of complying with the officers’ orders, the driver fled, sparking a chase through several city streets. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle crashed in the Berclair area. As a result of the impact, an adult man lost his life at the scene. Additionally, two minors traveling in one of the vehicles involved sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Authorities stated that their injuries are not life-threatening. Investigators noted that the crash occurred near the intersection of Summer Avenue and North Graham Street, a busy area in the Berclair neighborhood. Emer-

gency crews and police units remained at the scene for several hours while the investigation and evidence collection took place. So far, the identity of the deceased has not been released, as authorities are still in the process of notifying next of kin. The exact ages of the injured minors have not been disclosed either. The MPD indicated that the investigation remains active and that specialized detectives are reviewing the circumstances of the chase, including the speeds of the vehicles involved and the factors that led to the fatal crash. The incident caused temporary traﬃc closures in the area while investigators documented the scene. Authorities have asked anyone who witnessed the events or has additional information to contact CrimeStoppers. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities expect to release further details in the coming days.

Según las autoridades, los hechos comenzaron cuando agentes intentaron detener un vehículo relacionado con una investigación. En lugar de obedecer las órdenes de los oficiales, el conductor huyó, provocando una persecución por varias calles de la ciudad. La persecución terminó cuando el vehículo sospechoso chocó en el área de Berclair. Como consecuencia del impacto, un hombre adulto perdió la vida en la escena. (LPL) – Violent crime in Memphis continues to show a sharp decline during the first six months of 2026, according to statistics presented this Tuesday by Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis to City Council members. The data shows that homicides have fallen by approximately 44% compared to the same period last year. In total, 62 murders were reported up to June 11 of this year, compared to 110 cases recorded by the same date in 2025. Another significant drop was seen in vehicle thefts, which fell by around 62%, reﬂecting a general downward trend across the major crime categories analyzed by the department. Authorities noted that these reductions are not limited to just these two offenses but extend to all seven major crime categories regularly monitored by

the MPD, all of which show significant decreases compared to the previous year. During the presentation, a debate also arose regarding the factors that might be influencing this decline. It remains unclear how much of the drop can be directly attributed to the deployment of the National Guard and other federal agencies associated with the Memphis Safe Task Force, which began increasing its presence in the city last October. Councilwoman Jerri Green, who also works in the public defender’s office, noted that much of the reduction is due to the work of the Memphis Police Department; she highlighted that the National Guard lacks the authority to make arrests, meaning its direct impact on crime rates is limited. Official figures also indicate that the downward trend in Memphis crime is not new, as it has been observed since 2023.

“I’m not going to sit down with those thugs”: Abelardo de la Espriella’s stance on Chavismo

(LPL/EFE) – La candidata derechista Keiko Fujimori alcanzó el pasado martes la suficiente ventaja para ser la próxima presidenta de Perú al aventajar en 42.097 votos al izquierdista Roberto Sánchez. Este último ha denunciado sin pruebas un supuesto fraude y ha pedido anular la votación en el exterior. Al llegar al 99,79% del escrutinio de la segunda vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales, Fujimori tiene 50,11% de los votos válidos frente al 49,88% de Sánchez. Hay un estrecho margen entre ambos de 42.097 votos que ya no podrá ser revertido. Esto se debe a que quedan aproximadamente 38.200 votos por contabilizarse para ambos contendientes. Hasta la noche del pasado martes quedaban por escrutarse 191 actas electorales, 0,20% del total de 92.766 mesas electorales que se instalaron en la votación celebrada el pasado 7 de junio. Cada acta contiene en promedio unos 200 votos para los candidatos. Este resultado no será definitivo hasta que los jurados electorales no se pronuncien sobre la solicitud presentada el lunes por Sánchez para anular la votación en el exterior. Si eso pasa, se revertirían los resultados y le daría la victoria a él, que es el candidato más votado en el territorio nacional.

As of Tuesday night, 191 electoral tally sheets remained to be processed—representing 0.20% of the total 92,766 polling stations set up for the vote held on June 7. On average, each tally sheet contains about 200 votes for the candidates. This result will not be final until electoral authorities rule on the request Sánchez filed on Monday to annul the overseas vote. If that request is granted, the results would be reversed, handing victory to Sánchez, who received the most votes within the national territory.

Durante una entrevista concedida a Noticias Caracol a principios de mayo, el presidente electo aseguró que mantendrá los vínculos con Venezuela, pero a través de Estados Unidos. “Voy a tener todo el trato con Venezuela, pero a través de la Secretaría de Estado de Estados Unidos. Yo con esos malandros no me voy a sentar”, afirmó el dirigente colombiano. Las declaraciones se viralizaron nuevamente en redes sociales luego de que De la Espriella se impusiera en la segunda vuelta presidencial. Su planteamiento apunta a mantener la relación bilateral mediante mecanismos de interlocución apoyados por Washington. Esto está en línea con la estrecha relación que ha manifestado con la administración de Donald Trump. Aunque el presidente electo no planteó una ruptura de relaciones con Venezuela, sí dejó claro que no contempla conversaciones directas con dirigentes vinculados al chavismo.

Distributors were also overwhelmed, unable to keep pace with the ﬂood of requests from other bars across the city.
