Border Poetics Against the Wall (USA/México, 2020)

From BG: I dedicate my poetic contri-
butions to all of the womxn, feminists, and queer radicals that came before us and worked tirelessly so that we could have the freedom to make the work we do today. Most notably and influentially, for me, the incomparable, Eugenia Chellet, from whom I have learned so much. Thank you for being the witchy mentor that I needed, and such an inspiration to all.
No van a tener epifanías filosóficas.

Glosolalia for beginners William Stark Guillermo Gómez-Peña has a way of turning up at the right place, at the right time, for the wrong reason[s]. His critical interventions have exposed the inherent dangers that monoethnic, monolingual culture poses to an increasingly global society. His transborder personas explore the ramifications of a post-democratic, post-truth world, while viewing race and ethnicity through a cyber ethnic, robo-Esperanto lens. The reader will surely appreciate all of this, as Gómez-Peña brings the same insight and curatorial acumen to the current volume. Glosolalia is a timely intervention, in which Gómez-Peña and a handful of poets and performance artists from the US and México join ranks for a beautifully illustrated volume. Herein, un/translatable, in/transient, transborder poetry, performative texts, and spoken word pieces expose the dire realities of survival during the Trump era. This collection of texts, written in English, Nahuatl, Spanish, Spanglish and variations of Gringoñol and robo-Esperanto, describes the US-México border as a scar, or worse yet, an open wound that is the physical and psychological manifestation of a troubled past that continues to haunt the present; an unimaginable locus of enunciation, where children are separated from their families and detained in crowded, festering concentration camps. For over 30 years Gómez-Peña has occupied a space somewhere between the terminus of Western Civilization and the underbelly of modernity, where Hi-tech Aztec, Cyber Pocho and Superbarrio contend for a White House bid. Their nation––Imagi-nation––inhabits a locus vacillating on the edge of censorship––más allá, on the other side of an imaginary line drawn in the sand, against an ever-vanishing horizon. This is terra firma for Gómez-Peña and the poets and performance artists in this volume. Glosolalia represents a collective internalization of geographies, a mapping of national territories and identitary boundaries, which makes of the human body a text, and the site where shamanism and pyschomagical acts, incantations, poems and texts disturb normative cultural paradigms, interrogate notions of cultural hybridity and trouble the epistemological architecture of cultural, ethnic, racial and national delimitations. 9
A reflection from a “Glossolalist” to those who fear crossing borders Saúl García López
I believe in inverted languages as a strategy against border misunderstandings and as a means to reinstate border diplomacy. These languages represent an in-between territory: queer, interstitial, and illegitimate, these hybrid vocabularies provide oxygen in the fight against dehumanizing binaries. Here, in a space of radical linguistic variation, we can be full-throated crossbreeds against unidirectional thinking and militant politics. Trump, are you listening? When personally crossing aesthetic and national borders in art, I have witnessed the effects of fear manifest as imperialist or anti-imperialist resentment projected onto one or the other. In some artistic collaborations, the distress manifests as essentialist thinking that ends up “cannibalizing” the artwork. In other cases, an imaginary wall of artistic egotism emerges, cancelling any intent for a creative reconciliation. These dividing differences become a psychological and spiritual border divide impossible for some artists to cross. “Impure” words can be occult wrecking balls to crack and break the walls of exclusionary nationalism. They also have the political power to invoke and expose social demons. In the subsequent pages, an emancipatory territory of verbal impurity will be accessible to anyone who wants and has crossed cultural borders. Each poetic act is a linguistic provocation offered for you to choose your own adventure: focus on the differences or the similarities, the Spanish or English, on being “imperialist” or “anti-imperialist.” In this border zone, the message is not only in the words but in the journey of your acoustic and spatial interpretation. Glossolalia is “living language” and crosses linguistic rules highlighting the centrifugal force of language; it is language as diplomatic action and aims to dissolve the stern disciplines imposed on speech and body. As a “Glossolalist,” I respectfully reject the characterization of the border as a historical binational wound tied to structures of oppression. Instead, I invite the reader to experience this manuscript of poetic manifestations as a post-national frontier where interlinguistic locuras serve as a locus of understanding, tolerance and change. For those too fearful to taste the post-border and unleash the wild tonge, Glossolalia: Border Poetics Against the Wall stands as a belted bilingual mariachi ode calling for poetic acts of binational diplomacy. —Saúl García-López - aka La Saula Year of the T-MECtecas, and USMCA avatars of “impossible” languages

In the mid 90’s I began to suffer from Delirium Linguens, a form of creative delusion that propels you to invent obscure multilingual poetry at the spare of the moment, estableciendo conexiones insólitas entre el cuerpo, la palabra y mi destino; entre la política del lenguaje y la fisiología de la política.
