HOW TO SPOT A GIFT CARD SCAM With the biggest shopping season at its peak, gift card scams are increasingly prevalent. Fraudsters love gift cards because they’re easy to find, buy, and redeem. Once a gift card is used, the money is gone. And, there’s very little protection for the buyer if the gift card is lost, stolen, or willingly given away. If someone asks you to purchase a gift card or pay for something with a gift card, you’re likely being scammed. The scammer will usually tell you to act now or something terrible will happen. Sometimes, they will even tell you what specific gift card to buy. They may also ask for the gift card number and PIN. Don’t fall for any of these common tactics and be on high alert. If you feel you’ve been scammed, report it to the issuer of the gift card right away.
Buying and Using Gift Cards Safely If you’re gifting a gift card, stick to stores you know and trust. Choosing a gift card located behind a cashier counter is an ideal way to help ensure it hasn’t been tampered with. Otherwise, check that the gift card still has protective stickers and that the PIN and gift card number are not visible. Be sure to keep the receipt in case you need to file a report if the card gets lost.
