ot so long ago, I had the chance to visit this sacred place of such cultural and historical significance, originating from the old Kingdom of Lane Xang. This treasure is named Wat Satasahasaram (meaning the “Temple of over 100,000 Buddha Images”) but is more commonly known as Wat Sisaket. With each visit, this temple consistently preserves its ethereal allure and cultural and historical meaning. From the moment I step inside, it is like time pauses to allow me to feel the ambiance of the Lane Xang Kingdom in all its prosperity and glory, as though we are living among the people of that era right now.

The construction of Wat Sisaket commenced in 1818 under the reign of King Anouvong, who restored many revered sites, such as the That Luang stupa and the Ho Pha Keo temple, and also built Wat Sisaket, which is now of great historical importance.

On entering the temple cloister, my attention was drawn to some writing etched into a stone slab hanging on the wall to the right of the door. The stone was smooth, flawless, and brown in color and the writing had been engraved by hand, telling of the history of the temple’s construction, configuration, and inauguration. Having looked at the fine artistry of the slab, I was struck by the sim (ordination hall) situated right in the center of the cloister.

From the outside, I could see the large Buddha statue inside, amid the glow of the yellow lights, which further enhanced the splendor of this unforgettable picture. But that was not all – the majestic and sacrosanct ordination hall itself is also home to Ong Sen, the main Buddha image, and a plethora of other Buddha images in various postures in addition to various relics for use in religious ceremonies, while also hosting many monastic rituals, including the mass recital of Buddhist monastic rules and ordinations.

Inside the sim are murals depicting the Balasangkhaya, an old Buddhist tale of the adventures of Prince Bokkharaphat.

The pictures of these murals were painted using the expertise of artists of the era and also depict the site of the old Royal Palace (where the Presidential Palace now stands), temples, buildings of significance, the life of the Buddha, and the ways of living of the people in addition to pictures of nature, which stimulated my imagination, causing me to visualize the era as if I was there in person.

When I walked out to the right of the temple, however, I came back to my senses as I stumbled upon a fascinating hang hod, a long ceremonial wooden trough, crafted out of a single log of wood and carved into the head of a Naga water serpent at one end, and with patterns engraved into the surface. This is used in religious ceremonies for the Lao New Year and also for the ordination of monks. Perfumed water mixed with various flowers is ritually poured into the trough, where it runs over Buddha images and monks at the other end.

Looking up inside the sim, I gaze upon 1,026 Buddha niches carved into the walls, each containing two small Buddha images. There is also a storage room to the west of the sim containing Buddha images damaged when Siam sacked Vientiane between 1826 and 1828. A total of 996 of these broken bronze Buddha images were taken from temples throughout Vientiane.

All tourist attractions in Laos – whether they are cultural, historical, or natural – possess a quintessential elegance, which is characteristic of the Lao nation.

It is, therefore, the duty of everyone to preserve, maintain, and look after them because tourism must also include responsibility towards all the sites we visit. We should work together to conserve and preserve their irreplaceable and sublime magnificence so they may be enjoyed by future generations.

ayaboury province is elephant country. For centuries, these gentle giants hauled timber through dense forests and carried soldiers into battle, their intelligence and strength woven into the very fabric of Lao history. Now the chainsaws have mostly fallen silent and the military elephants are museum pieces, but the bond between the Lao people and their elephants endures. Each February, the province pays tribute to this ancient relationship with a week-long celebration that brings dozens of elephants—and their devoted mahouts—together in a spectacle you’ll find nowhere else in Southeast Asia.

The festival unfolds over seven days in mid-February, beginning with a mini-marathon that sees runners pounding through town while elephants and their handlers prepare for the days ahead. By morning’s end, the first traditional baci ceremony takes place—a quintessentially Lao ritual where cotton strings are tied around wrists (and later, around elephants’ legs) to invoke blessings and good fortune. As dusk settles, the town square comes alive with traditional dance performances, a reminder that this is as much a cultural celebration as it is about the elephants themselves.

Come evening, the mood shifts entirely as the Miss Thida Boun Xang pageant crowns its beauty queen, blending tradition with contemporary glamor.

The spiritual heart of the festival beats strongest on Day 4. At dawn, saffron-robed monks move through the town collecting alms, then perform a special ceremony dedicating merit to the elephants and their caretakers. It’s a profoundly moving acknowledgment of the symbiotic relationship that has sustained both species through generations of change. The morning hums with final preparations—adjustments to parade routes, last-minute costume fittings, and the palpable anticipation of what’s to come.

Then arrives Day 5, the official opening.

he northeastern province of Houaphan is truly an unseen area of Laos, and its remote location means it has not become too touristed. The province is full of spectacular scenery, from rugged mountains to beautiful waterfalls to unusual caves. Houaphan is also full of diverse and interesting ethnic groups, beautiful weaving traditions, and a rich history all its own. With the opening of a new airport, Houaphan will see many more travelers in the future. So if you want to see Houaphan in its natural state, visit now before the tourists come.

Sam Neua

Houaphan’s provincial capital is Sam Neua, a market town. The handicrafts of the Hmong, Tai Dam, Tai Daeng, and Tai Lue ethnic groups are offered on market days in this town on the Sam River. This quiet village, nestled in some of Laos’ most stunning mountain scenery, served as the revolution’s nerve center. The majority of visitors come to Sam Neua as a base for seeing the region’s remarkable historical and natural treasures.

City Pillar Many places in Laos have city pillars, which date back to pre-Buddhist beliefs. They are said to be home to guardian spirits that look after the city’s health and safety. Locals believe in these powers and provide incense and flowers in exchange for wishes of health, success, or riches. In Sam Neua, the city pillar is located at a prominent intersection and is ornamented with traditional motifs.

Houaphan Quang Ninh Friendship Park Locals flock to this large open space in the heart of Sam Neua to exercise, especially early in the morning and evening. The large standing stones represent the famous ancient stones known as Hin Tang, which are located in the province.

The breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape are one highlight of this temple. It is situated on a mountaintop with a panoramic view over the town of Sam Neua and the surrounding mountains. Visitors also visit to worship the famous Phra Chao Ong Teu statue.

Nam Noua Waterfall The Nam Noua Waterfall is one of Laos’ most breathtaking. These waterfalls are particularly beautiful in the rainy season, when they are at their largest, with an 80-meter drop over two ledges.

It is a good spot for a picnic and a swim in the pools below.

Revolutionary Caves The Lao resistance movement’s headquarters were located here. The Pathet Lao’s revolutionary leaders all built their strongholds in caves in Houaphan Province in 1964. With hospitals, offices, schools, a printing press, and markets all within the caves, they became the hub of the Pathet Lao independence struggle. Get a tour guide from the Visitor’s Center to really understand the history of this area.

Hin Tang

Mysterious standing stones were built here by an unknown civilization. They are thought to be even older than the Plain of Jars, having been erected by the jar builders’ ancestors. It’s unclear when this lost civilization existed – though it’s thought to have been thousands of years ago – or even who they were. The standing stones, like the jars, are thought to have played a role in ceremonial funerals. Aside from that, little is known.

Saleuy Waterfall During the warm months, Lao people seek respite at this beautiful waterfall. The water cascades down over a slick rockface.

If you want to climb to the top, there is a trail nearby. At the bottom, merchants sell refreshments as well as locally produced textiles from the Phong ethnic group.

Nam-Et Phou Louey National Protected Area Nature lovers enjoy this area, which offers some of Laos’ best opportunities to see wildlife. The popular one-day Night Safari tour offers sightings of various deer, cats, and birds in their natural habitat as visitors float down the river. There are also multi-day trekking options through cloud forests to the top of Phou Louey mountain.
