It is with sincere gratitude that I thank each of you for your unwavering support of Langston University and its mission. Your generosity is more than a contribution; it is an investment in the lives of our students and the future of our institution.
The Langston University Foundation plays a vital role in advancing opportunities for our students and strengthening programs across our campuses.
This work would not be possible without the dedication and professionalism of the LU Foundation staff. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Staci Woodberry and Jillian Bray for their outstanding service, and a special thank you to Joshua Busby (’06), who has provided exceptional leadership as Interim Executive Director during this transitional period.
I am equally grateful to the members of the LU Foundation Board, chaired by David Stephens (’82), for the time, talent, and treasure you so generously share with Dear Langston. Your commitment ensures that we remain true to our mission while preparing students to lead and serve in an ever-evolving society.

As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with gratitude for the extraordinary generosity and commitment of our community. Together, we have advanced the mission of Langston University by ensuring that students have the resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.
This year, your contributions made a tangible difference. We expanded scholarship funding, enabling more students to pursue their education without financial barriers. We supported strategic initiatives that are shaping the future of higher education and economic development in the State of Oklahoma. And we strengthened our endowment, ensuring that the foundation remains a pillar of stability for generations to come.
Beyond the numbers, what inspires me most is the impact — from the first-generation student whose dream of attending medical school is now a reality, to the faculty member whose research is transforming lives, as well as the alumni who return and continue to give of their time, talent and treasure to the institution that shaped them. THE BEST YOU POSSIBLE
Jasilyn Spivey chose Langston University and her broadcast journalism major while on a campus tour. The talented high school student had gained acceptance into seven universities, and she toured six of them.
“The only one that felt like a home was Langston,” Spivey said.
Originally planning to major in biology, Spivey knew it wasn’t the field for her after reviewing the plan of study. Fortuitously, her campus tour included the university’s radio station where a future alumna was on the air.
“She interviewed me and I was, like, ‘Oh yeah, I could see myself doing this,” Spivey recalled.
The Oklahoma’s Promise and first-generation college student has made her mark at Dear Langston. Spivey has served in student government, worked as a reporter for The Gazette student newspaper, and been an active member of several student organizations including Langston University’s chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
Spivey credits Langston University for giving her the tools and access for success. This includes securing summer internships and being selected as an NBA x HBCU Fellow for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“Honestly … being able to put me in contact with people around the country … especially with our alumni,” Spivey said. “Langston is such a close-knit community, no matter how far you are; you still have that connection in California, Maryland, or New York.”
Importance of the LU Foundation Scholarship
Receiving the LU Foundation Scholarship has been pivotal in Spivey’s educational journey. “It’s kept me here,” she said. “I have two little brothers back home that my mom has to worry about. It’s really helped a lot with me staying and being able to finish my time here at Langston. Without the scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to be here.”
A role model for her brothers, Spivey enjoys spending time with them at the university.
“They just love the energy of Langston,” Spivey said. “So, any time I get the chance to steal them and show them around, they love it every time!”
During the Fall 2025 semester, President Ruth Ray Jackson selected Spivey to address the Oklahoma State Regents of Higher Education and share what Langston University means to her. She represented the university well and impressed the regents.
“I felt so blessed to even be chosen to speak,” Spivey said. “I have so much pride for my school. Just being able to talk and to share what I love about Langston. I’ve loved my time here, loved getting to meet everyone. They just want you to be the best you possible.”
Looking forward to graduating in 2026, Spivey intends on pursuing a master’s in public administration. She also plans to “continue working in city government or community engagement with any NBA team.”
“That’s really the goal; to keep on pushing,” she said.

TERRANCE L. KEYS II
Terrance L. Keys II enrolled at Langston University on the word and promise of a family friend, Eric Harris Sr. An alumnus, Harris currently serves as the university’s student life facilities and recreation coordinator and is among the elite members inducted into the LU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Harris, or “Rev” as he is known to many, provided Keys with valuable guidance.
“Rev has been around my family for 50 years,” Keys said. “My mom and he grew up together. He was a member of our church for years and has been consistent. He was really big on when I went to college that I would have people already there who would be there throughout my matriculation. Rev said, ‘I’ve got you. I’ll take care of you.’ And he’s done that.”
An Army Reservist, Keys graduated from high school during the pandemic in May 2020. In July that year, he entered basic training and graduated from Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in December. Just one month later, on his very first day in Oklahoma, he moved to his new Home on the Hill.
Hailing from a military family, Keys’ father served as did two of his uncles. One of his uncles served 28 years, retiring as a First Sergeant. “He’s one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to what the military can do for you, in and out of service,” Keys said.
Paying for His University Education
“My parents always preached to me, ‘Don’t leave here (college) with debt,” Keys said. “The hardest part for a lot of people is going through all these years of college and coming out with double, triple, quadruple the amount to pay back.”
Learning from his family how to be resourceful, Keys is utilizing the educational benefits of the U.S. Army. He has also earned a Langston University Foundation scholarship to help him pursue his goal of graduating without debt.
“Accepting and getting scholarships gave me the chance to further my education and showed me just how much Langston University believes in us as students,” Keys said.
Scholarships are critical to students, especially for those who are the first in their family to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Scheduled to graduate in Fall 2026, Keys is grateful for the Foundation’s scholarship assistance.
“Essentially, it’s shown the university’s support and belief in me to be in a better situation,” Keys said.
Keys is proud to be the first in his family to attend an HBCU.
“I plan on being a big advocate,” he said. “I just believe in everything that HBCUs stand for, especially for our culture. Giving us a place where education and experience coincide. HBCUs give you an experience that’s tailored for you and made with you in mind. I have to believe that over 120 years ago, when the townspeople founded Langston University, they had me in mind. I believe in what HBCUs can do, what they have done, and what they will do for us in the future.”
A business owner, Keys has been operating his own LLC for seven years.
“I stepped out on a limb and created a non-profit organization on my birthday,” he said. “Since then, I’ve branched out and created a clothing line as well as event and graphic design operations.”
With the goal of being a successful entrepreneur, Keys chose his business degree to gain an understanding of how to best operate and sustain his organization. Next up for the determined student is identifying his post-graduation home. Reviewing all the options for growth, he has narrowed the choices to four states, including Oklahoma where he has established a strong community.
