“We’re able to do right by our horses and our partners because of our people. No part of our success would be possible without them.
WILL AND BILL FARISH
“
By Alicia Hughes
Like many in his vocation who spend most of their waking hours caring for equine athletes, Todd Claunch prefers to let his work speak for itself rather than trying to articulate his own success.
For more than three decades, Claunch has been a fixture at Lane’s End Farm, ascending his way from groom to farm manager. His weight of responsibility has grown ever heavier over the years as he has had some of the operation’s most storied residents under his watchful gaze, from the legendary A.P. Indy, to Horse the Year Mineshaft, to the iconic heroine that is Zenyatta.
His is a resume overflowing with experience in handling some of the Thoroughbred’s industry best of the absolute best. Yet, as is typical of his humble nature, Claunch tends to redirect most efforts to shine a spotlight his way, “I’ve always tried to stay out of the limelight,” he said. “It’s all about the horses, not about me. They’re the ones that matter.”
His attempts to deflect notwithstanding, it is a matter of fact that Claunch’s knowledge and horsemanship has been of significance consequence to the growth of one of the most illustrious commercial Thoroughbred operations in North America. In 2020, thirty years after he first dawned the farm’s doors, he succeeded his mentor Mike Cline in the position of Lane’s End farm manager. Now, after four years in that crucial role, Claunch himself will be retiring from that post, leaving behind some sizable shoes to fill and an impact that figures to endure in the same vein as the bloodlines he helped hone.
It is fitting that Claunch’s arrival at Lane’s End coincided with the construction of its stallion complex on Midway Road as his skillset has developed alongside the numerous Grade 1 winners and champions who have sauntered the grounds. A native of Lexington, Claunch grew up riding hunter/jumpers and polo ponies and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Agricultural Economics. Before joining Lane’s End, he had previous-
ly worked at Juddmonte, breaking yearlings and foaling mares, and had been a farm manager at a smaller operation.
In 1990, when he came to the farm owned and founded by William S. Farish, Claunch thought his job as a yearling groom would be a steppingstone toward helping him achieve his ultimate goal of managing a major nursery. What was initially a career-building role he thought he would eventually move on from, however, became the foundation for a decades-long relationship that would see his professional objectives steadily materialize.
“I knew I wanted to be a farm manager at a big farm one day and I thought Lane’s End would look good on my resume,” Claunch said. “I thought, ‘I’ll go there for a few years’ and probably move on but it’s such a great place to work. The Farishes are just amazing, and the facilities are top notch. Any move I would have made after that would have been a lateral move or a negative move. It wouldn’t have been something moving forward because…we’ve had some of the greatest horses in the world here.”
Caring for and developing some of the best bloodstock in the sport indeed provides an invaluable level of experience. So too does sharpening your craft alongside one of the most knowledgeable minds in the industry.
To that end, Claunch had the good fortune of working under Cline throughout his career and was able to absorb some key fundamentals that he carries out to this day. While certain aspects of the industry have evolved over the years, sound horsemanship has never wavered as the driving force behind any achievements Lane’s End has enjoyed.
“You know, the reverence for the horse and the land mainly was what Mike instilled,” Claunch said. “He was really good at pasture management and had a really good eye for a horse. We talked a lot about nutrition and exercise and just the overall picture of it. Mike had a great grasp of it all, so it was good working with him all those years.
“When I took over (as farm manager), you realize the responsibility is all on you and you don’t have somebody you can go and say, ‘Hey we’ve got this issue going on, what’s the best way to deal with it?’. It’s a whole different ballgame. But I knew the job, knew the clients, knew the horses, knew the staff, it wasn’t like I was coming in cold. I didn’t come in looking to change things much…. it’s basically the way it was when I started. I’ve tried to keep it in the tradition of the farm because we’ve raised a lot of good horses here.”
A big part of creating the best environment for all horses who call Lane’s End home is recognizing their needs as individuals – something Claunch took to heart no matter who was on the end of the lead shank. As one former farm resident would repeatedly prove, taking the time to learn-
Eclipse Award-winner that the lessons he was attempting to impart were her idea.
“There have been some really great ones over the years… but I think the one that really stood out to me was Rags to Riches,” he recalled. “She was not easy to deal with, but you could see early on what her potential was. It made it worthwhile trying to get her to do what you wanted her to do. She was tough.”
Another major source of pride for Claunch as he reflects on the last 34 years is seeing so many former colleagues carve out their own path in the industry. He estimates at least 1520 farm managers in Kentucky alone came through Lane’s End at some point in their career with more holding down similar positions at operations around the globe.
their quirks, their moods, and the language they give off can make all the difference in their development.
Picking a favorite charge over the years is akin to Claunch choosing a preferred child but a certain headstrong filly stands out as one of his most challenging and rewarding of proteges. Before she defeated future Hall of Famer Curlin in the 2007 Belmont Stakes to become the first female runner in over a century to annex the classic, Rags to Riches was an opinionated yearling being prepped as part of the Lane’s End consignment for the 2005 Keeneland September auction.
While she would ultimately bring a lofty final bid of $1.9 million during her time in the ring on behalf of owners Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the daughter of A.P. Indy also tested many aspects of Claunch’s ability with her less-than-accommodating temperament. The good mind was there, Claunch could see. He just had to convince the eventual
“That’s one of the things we’re most proud of. You get a good foundation at a place like this and go from there,” Claunch said. “It’s been great working with so many talented people.”
True to form, Claunch makes sure spread the wealth in recognizing those who helped him achieve his professional dreams. It is no coincidence, however, that his presence and career climb has run lockstep with some of Lane’s End’s greatest moments.
“You know other than Mike, the Farishes have just been awesome,” he said. “They have such a love of the horse and of the horse business and it couldn’t have been any better working any place else. They’re just great people.”
