Root River State Water & Bike Trails
River
The tranquil South Branch of the Root River meanders through Lanesboro, linking the town to the larger valley and its rich history. Once a vital resource for the Native Americans who traversed the area on migratory journeys, the river also shaped the lives of the Norwegian settlers who arrived in the 1830s. Central to Lanesboro’s original vision as a resort community, the river remains a cornerstone of recreation today. Born from underground springs near Spring Valley to the west, the South Branch offers a serene and leisurely float—a peaceful escape perfect for unwinding and letting the current guide you. From the dam in Lanesboro to the confluence where the South and North Branches meet, the river is also a haven for yearround catch-and-release fishing.
Trail

This scenic trail connects eight distinct towns, each boasting its own unique charm—from world-famous pie and cozy resorts to ancient natural preserves. The trail doubles as a self-guided tour through the region’s diverse micro-biomes and breathtaking landscapes. Highlights include a dramatic 500-foot bridge over the river and a stretch through the Isinours Forestry Unit. Along the way, you’ll find opportunities to shop, dine, and soak in countless camera-worthy views of the Driftless beauty.

Discover the Cool Wonders of the Driftless Region
The Driftless Region is a unique area in the upper Midwest of the United States, covering parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. This area escaped the flattening effects of glaciers during the last Ice Age. While most of the Midwest was smoothed out by giant sheets of ice, this region stayed untouched by glacial drift—giving it the name “Drift-less.” The result? A rugged landscape of steep hills, deep valleys, and ancient rock formations. Over millions of years, rivers carved through these rocks, creating dramatic cliffs and bluffs perfect for recreation, photography, and breathtaking views.
One of the coolest things about the Driftless Region is its karst landscape. This happens when rainwater, slightly acidic from mixing with carbon dioxide, eats away at limestone. Over time, this creates features like caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers. Exploring these feels like stepping into a natural wonderland. You can visit caves, see bubbling springs, or fish in crystal-clear trout streams.
The region is also a hotspot for nature and wildlife. Its mix of rocky cliffs, shady forests, and fresh-water springs creates homes for all kinds of animals and plants. Bald eagles are a regular sight, soaring above the valleys, while native trout swim in cold, clean streams below. Every hike, paddle, or drive offers the chance to see something new and exciting.
So why should you visit the Driftless Region? It’s one of the most unique and beautiful places in the Midwest! Whether
One of the best-kept secrets of our area is its relative lack of mosquitos. Thanks to cold, fast-moving streams and a landscape largely without the standing water that mosquitoes need to breed, outdoor adventures here are refreshingly mosquitofree compared to other areas. Whether you’re tubing, biking, or enjoying a meal on a patio, you can relax and soak in the beauty of Lanesboro & Whalan with much less worry about getting “bugged” by mosquitos.
you love exploring caves, fishing in world-class trout streams, hiking to scenic overlooks, or relaxing in a peaceful natural setting, this region offers it all. Towns like Lanesboro & Whalan serve as great home bases, with cozy inns, local restaurants, and welcoming communities to make your stay memorable.
The Driftless Region isn’t just a place to visit—it’s an experience. Geology, nature, and outdoor fun combine to create something truly special. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or both, the Driftless Region is calling. Don’t miss out!

Lanesboro FAQs
What are the store hours?
One aspect that makes our community so unique is each of our stores and dining establishments are independently owned and operated — no franchises! Each store and restaurant has its own set of hours. Some establishments are seasonal, some are open year-round. However, even in the slower season there are generally always available options.
Is it worth visiting in the winter?
Absolutely! Lanesboro and Whalan offer an enchanting winter experience. While you can expect a slower pace, the historic architecture and snowy landscapes are captivating. Indoor attractions like theaters, galleries, and local dining spots provide warmth and entertainment. Snowy recreation opportunities include skiing, sledding/ tubing, and snowshoeing. Winter markets and events add a festive touch, making Lanesboro a cozy and delightful winter retreat.
The weather forecast predicts rain, should I cancel my trip?
You can still enjoy the Bluff Country experience even if there’s rain in the forecast! Explore nature indoors at Niagara and Mystery Caves. Take a jaunt to Houston via the scenic byway (State Hwy 16) and visit the International Owl Center. Learn about our Amish neighbors on a guided bus tour, visit history museums, explore art galleries, and enjoy theater performances. Of course, there is always plenty of shopping and indoor dining and spirits to enjoy. Don’t let your weather app ruin your fun!
Where are there public restrooms?
Year-round public restrooms are located at the Visitor Center right on the bike trail downtown (100 Milwaukee Rd) and at the Community Center (202 Parkway Ave S) next to Sylvan Park. Seasonal restrooms are available in the Sylvan Park Campground bathhouse, Riverview Campground, Bass Pond parking lot, and at the softball field.
Do I need a trail pass to ride on the Root River State Trail?
No! The trail is open to hikers, bikers, and inline skaters during the spring, summer, and fall months without any passes required. However, if you plan to cross-country ski on the trail during the winter, a Minnesota Ski Pass is required (purchase online from the MN DNR) for skiers aged 16 and older.
Where can I find more information and a map?
Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center (downtown on the trail) for maps of the trail, Lanesboro and Whalan and of Minnesota. You can also find business brochures, other area guides, and event info. Many of our business establishments also have maps and guides available.

LANESBORO REBRANDING PROJECT
In 2024 the Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Lanesboro and Lanesboro Economic Development Authority, embarked on an ambitious community rebranding project. The aim of this project was to create an attractive, cohesive set of brand standards for the community for years to come.
Introducing.....
Lanesboro is the gem of southeast Minnesota that connects nature and the arts and supports a thriving community of small businesses.
The new logo wordmark, icon, color pallete, and tagline are the first major update to Lanesboroʼs community branding since 2008.
The icon represents the Root River flowing through a curved, organic leaf shape.
The handmade wordmark reflects the artistic and unique character of Lanesboro.
“The Gem of Southeast Minnesota” tagline captures the essence of Lanesboro, due to our picturesque landscapes, vibrant arts scene, historic charm, and warm community spirit, making us a true treasure within the region.
A huge thank you to our project sponsors for making this possible:
