YOU’D LOVE THIS PLACE

The author Gertrude Stein got into hot water by saying her hometown of Oakland, California, had no ‘there’ there. I think Gertrude would love Lanesboro. Why? Because there’s a ‘there’ here. An unmistakable sense of place. You feel it immediately when you arrive. You remember it long after you leave.

I saw Lanesboro for the first time on a summer day when we drove here to check out a Bed & Breakfast for sale and to see southeastern Minnesota for the first time. I expected to find a quiet, Minnesota farm town. There was so much more. “It all feels like one big park,” I remember saying. When I mentioned to a downtown shopkeeper that we were looking at a B & B, he smiled and said, “You’ll be here in six months.” He was right.
