Lane Cove Council is delighted to present our Christmas 2025 program, celebrating the wonder of the Christmas Beetle. Many of us remember how the shimmering Christmas Beetle signalled the start of summer, appearing on beach towels and buzzing through backyards. Sadly, their numbers have declined and these sparkling icons are now a rare sight.
This year, Lane Cove Council is once again honouring these beautiful creatures and raising awareness of their environmental importance through fun, educational and citizen science activities. Celebrate the festive season with community spirit, creativity and a touch of nostalgia.
Over a dozen dazzling Christmas Beetle sculptures are returning to the streets, joined by a few new friends. Created by talented artists and Council teams, these vibrant works bring festive cheer while reminding us to protect these much-loved native beetles. Keep your eyes peeled — the beetles are back and brighter than ever! Can you find them all?
CHRISTMAS BEETLE COUNT WITH INVERTEBRATES AUSTRALIA
Invertebrates Australia’s Christmas Beetle Count is a community science project inviting Australians to upload sightings of Christmas beetles to iNaturalist, helping researchers track their distribution and possible decline. The initiative, supported by the University of Sydney and the Australian Museum aims to uncover why these iconic summer beetles ar to find and inspire more people to p invertebrates. Join us on this festive season bug hunt and go looking for all sorts of bugs, in particular the shiny Christmas beetle! You will also explore the aquatic creatures living in the creeks - yule be amazed at the variety of invertebrates which can be found. Ages 5+

With over 300,000 species of beetles world Christmas beetle is one of the prettiest. Come along to learn about these colourful beetles and other interesting Australian ones. We'll read a storybook, go on a bushwalk and create a craft beetle of our own.

Join us for our annual Christmas Evening Storytime featuring festive stories & songs. For children of all ages and their families. No bookings required.
Enjoy an evening of designing and making. If you are an experienced maker, bring your own idea to life using the 3D Printer, Laser Cutter, Soldering Iron or Cricut Maker. If you are a new maker, learn how to design and make wooden Christmas decorations using the Laser Cutter.
This month new makers will receive safety training using the Laser Cutter before starting their project. Materials provided for projects completed on the night. Our 3D Printing service is available for unfinished projects, normal fees apply.
Plastic Soul, formed by top Sydney musicians, is a highenergy party band specialising in funk and soul. Covering everything from '60s Motown to 2000s R&B, they bring grooves that will have everyone dancing. Picnic-style gathering (no spikes allowed). Please note that umbrellas, dogs, and taller chairs are not permitted.
