State of things

This publication is the start of a two-year project in the framework of Landskrona Foto Festival. It is a collective and collaborative project planned in a series of stages, interpreting the ambiguity of the word ‘state’ as territory, but also as the temporary condition of things -objects, people, and places- at a certain moment in time.

The group of artists in this project are interested in the world of objects -their individual practices rooted in sculpture and performance- all coming together in the use of lens based media; from flat scanners, through to photography and video, as a main element of their work.

Due to the unusual circumstances the world faces this year- we start this project online and by post, with the view of retaking our original plan in 2022: to be based in Landskrona and create a workshop/ installation responding to the immediate surroundings and events of the festival.

As a collective action we want to create a memory of Landskrona as a ‘State of Things’: Through its long history, the town has been many things, from a fishing village, to a garrison town, to an industrial hub.

It has been re-imagined, re-shaped. This publication presents a seed idea for each of the artists in the group. People can either download it as a PDF to print it at home, or request an editioned copy to be sent to them by post from the project’s website.

We envision these foldout prints to be displayed in different places around Landskrona (wherever someone wants to pull out and hang them... cafes, windows, libraries even people’s homes). Some of the projects entail re-photographing these images and sending them back by post or via social media.

Working as part of Landskrona Festival’s 2020 Event Programme, we’ll launch this publication, along with the project’s microsite (www. state-of-things.com) during an on-line event, featuring presentations by the artists and conversation with the curator.

Denna publikation innebär starten på ett tvåårigt projekt inom ramen för Landskrona Foto Festival. Det rör sig om ett kollektivt samarbetsprojekt planerat att äga rum i etapper, som tolkar oklarheten i ordet state: som ’territorium’, men även som ’tillstånd’ – avseende saker, objekt, människor och platser – vid en viss tidpunkt.

Gruppen av konstnärer i detta projekt är intresserad av en värld av föremål – var och ens individuella uttryck är förankrat i skulptur och konceptkonst genom främst användningen av linsbaserade medier; från flatskannrar, till fotografering och video.

På grund av de ovanliga omständigheter världen i stort står inför i år startar vi detta projekt online kombinerat med utskick av olika slag, för att förhoppningsvis återuppta vår ursprungliga plan 2022: att vara baserat i Landskrona genom skapandet av en workshop/installation som svarar på festivalens omedelbara omgivningar och händelser.

Som en kollektiv handling vill vi skapa ett minne av Landskrona som ett “territorium av saker”: Genom sin långa historia har staden haft många funktioner; från en fiskeby, till en garnisonsstad, till ett industriellt nav. Den har planerats om, den har omformats. Denna publikation presenterar ett frö från var och en av konstnärerna i gruppen. Du kan antingen ladda ner det som en PDF och skriva ut det hemma, eller begära att en tryckt kopia skickas till dig per post från projektets webbplats.

Vi ser framför oss att dessa tryckta uppslag skall visas på olika platser runt om i Landskrona (varhelst någon vill vika ut dem och hänga upp dem: i kaféer, fönster, bibliotek till och med i hemmen). Vissa av projekten inbegriper att fotografera av bilderna och returnera dem med posten eller via sociala medier.

Som en del av programmet inom Landskrona Foto Festival 2020 kommer vi att lansera denna publikation tillsammans med projektets mikrosite (www.state-of-things.com) under ett online-evenemang, med presentationer av konstnärerna och ett möte med kuratorn

Bärbel Praun, Container, 2020 This idea started with the fact that both cities, -Hamburg where I live, and Landskrona- have a harbour, different in magnitude and economic status of course, but having one thing in common: both harbours used to have shipyards. They experienced economic growth after WW2, rapid decrease in the seventies during the energy and oil crises, and lost their importance as shipyards along with their steel industry in the eighties.

My seed idea of the ‘territory’ will have the exact size of a standard container used for global commercial shipping.

To create this area, both imagined and physical, I walked a 20-foot space in a performative act in an industrial area of the harbour in Hamburg (20 foot = one of the most used standard sizes of a container), and work with video and still images. The act of walking helps me to imagine and visualize the space. A second chapter will be to ‘fill’ this space with sculptures made of material found in the harbour area, first in Hamburg, and then in Landskrona in 2022. state-of-things.com/barbelpraun

Hannah Hughes, Outer Movements, 2020 Outer Movements, the series of photographs presented in this publication, uses discarded paper pulp packing materials to create precarious temporary structures, focusing on discreet languages formed in the spaces surrounding objects.

Working with fragments, recycled materials and leftovers, my approach to The State of Things involves a response to the condition of ‘not knowing,’ both in relation to the unknown spaces of the city, and through the speculative processes of collage and sculpture-based photographs.

Sequences of collaged images and cast objects placed in and around the exhibition sites in Landskrona will work in response to their environment, occupying in-between states of solidity and impermanence, creating both physical and imagined spaces that remain provisional and subject to further transformation. hannah-hughes.com state-of-things.com/hannahhughes

Joshua Bilton, 67 laments, 2020 // Objects for meditation to be held in the palm of the hand, clay casts and found stones wrapped in thread, 2020 I would like to use this publication space as the beginning of an exchange where I share three fragments of text and a sound meditation that discuss states of transformation. I want to invite people to respond with written fragments, personal stories, mythologies, dreams of animal forms and encounters with birds. Within this exchange there is a preoccupation with lament, what we are lamenting for and how this can be carried through gesture and impression.

Mythologically, bird forms have absorbed the weight of our loss, crisis and grief in their nature as both creatures of the earth and the sky. In poetry and literature they are often seen as spiritual animals directly connected to the threshold state between living, dying, beginning and ending.

Throughout history hybrid creatures have been used to convey complex states of time. The most well known of these is Ovid’s metamorphoses where humans, nymphs and other beings in moments of crisis give over all or part of their form to trees, vegetables, animals, invertebrates and minerals. Tom Lovelace, Malleable Matter, 2020 The idea and ambition of this work is to send abstract artworks into the world as an invitation for the recipients to respond and react to these spaces of minimalism, in what I hope will be revealing, insightful and unexpected ways. At the centre of my practice is an inquiry into the relationship between the body (physical and psychological) and the connected languages of abstraction and minimalism. What role does minimalism play within contemporary visual culture? And what are the possibilities of images, surfaces and spaces that are rooted in a fabric and form of nothingness?

Malleable Matter initially takes form as monochrome pages. The reader is

invited to remove these abstract spaces from the publication and respond in any way they like. This space could be cut, folded, twisted, turned or stained.

Eugenia Ivanissevich, Migrare, 2020 I am looking at the geometric net often taught in schools to visualise an unfolded 3D shape. It is a journey from one state to another: from being three dimensional, tangible and holdable, to being a technical drawing or cutout, a flat outline that when folded can become voluminous again. I paused on the words re-shaping and re-imagining in relation to place, which brought me to find connections between surface areas, geometric net, shapes and maps.

Historical and contemporary maps of Landskrona have nurtured this curiosity, highlighting the moat surrounding the Landskrona citadel. The changing map and its relation to place lived, walked, built, shared, abandoned, loved, known and unknown also, arrived at and left.

This shape is dynamic and elastic in its interpretations. Sometimes I see in it a boat, alluding to my great-grandfather’s one-way voyage from Malmö to Argentina at the end of the 19th century.

Sometimes I see in it the blueprint of urban districts, neighbourhoods, communities; other times a bird. And other days the cutout speaks to me of a latent displacement. I invite you to take part of a shape in flux: transforming it, manipulating it, re-inventing it. Draw it, colour it, fold it, glue it and turn it into an object, position it in the landscape, re-photograph it, sing it or sing to it!

Bärbel Praun, Container, 2020 Min idé uppstod utifrån omständigheten att städerna Hamburg, där jag bor, och Landskrona båda har en hamn, olika till storlek och ekonomisk status naturligtvis, men med en sak gemensamt: båda hamnarna brukade ha skeppsvarv.

De upplevde ekonomisk tillväxt efter andra världskriget, snabb minskning på sjuttiotalet under energi wwoch oljekriserna och förlorade sin betydelse som varv tillsammans med stålindustrin på åttiotalet.

Fröet jag sår om “territoriet” kommer att ha den exakta storleken av en standardcontainer som används för global, kommersiell sjöfart. För att skapa detta utrymme, både i tanken och fysiskt, stegade jag i en scenisk akt upp en yta av 20 fot i ett industriområde i hamnen i Hamburg, där jag arbetar med video och stillbilder. Nästa steg blir att fylla denna rymd med skulpturer, skapade av material funnet i hamnområdet, först i Hamburg och därefter i Landskrona 2022. state-of-things.com/barbelpraun

Hannah Hughes, Outer Movements, 2020 Outer Movements, den serie fotografier som presenteras i denna publikation, utgår från kasserad pappersmassa från förpackningar för att skapa skakiga, tillfälliga strukturer, med fokus på de diskreta språk som uppstår i utrymmen som omger objekt.

Genom att arbeta med fragment, återvunnet material och rester inbegriper min vinkling av The State of Things ett svar på premissen “att inte veta”, såväl i förhållande till stadens främmande utrymmen, som genom de oförutsägbara resultaten av collage och skulpturbaserad fotografi.

Sekvenser av collage och gjutna föremål placerade i och runt utställningsplatserna i Landskrona kommer att fungera som svar på deras miljö, där de upptar ett slags mellantillstånd av soliditet och flyktighet, därvid skapande både fysiska och föreställda utrymmen som förblir provisoriska och föremål för ytterligare omvandling. hannah-hughes.com state-of-things.com/hannahhughes

Joshua Bilton, 67 laments, 2020 // Objects for meditation to be held in the palm of the hand, clay casts and found stones wrapped in thread, 2020 Jag skulle vilja använda mitt utrymme i publikationen som en början på ett utbyte där jag delar med mig av tre textfragment och en sund meditation som diskuterar förvandlingars status.

Jag vill uppmana människor att svara med skriftliga fragment, personliga berättelser, mytologier, drömmar om djurlika former och möten med fåglar.

Inom detta utbyte finns en upptagenhet med beklagan, vad vi beklagar och hur vi gör det med rätt hållning och attityd.

Mytologiskt har fågelformer minskat vikten av vår förlust, kris och sorg genom dess natur av både jordens och himmelens varelser. I poesi och litteratur ses de ofta som andliga varelser kopplade till tröskelstillståndet mellan levande, döende, början och slut.

Genom historien har hybridvarelser använts för att förmedla komplexa tidsbegrepp. De mest kända av dessa är Ovidius’ Metamorfoser där människor, nymfer och andra varelser i krisstunder överlämnar hela eller delar av sin form till träd, grönsaker, djur, ryggradslösa djur och mineraler. Tom Lovelace, Malleable Matter, 2020 Idén och ambitionen med detta arbete är att förse världen med abstrakta konstverk, som en inbjudan till mottagarna att svara och reagera på dessa minimala utrymmen, förhoppningsvis på avslöjande, insiktsfulla och oväntade sätt. I mitten av min övning finns en frågeställning om förhållandet mellan kroppen (fysiskt och psykologiskt) och de anslutna språken för abstraktion och minimalism. Vilken roll spelar minimalism inom modern visuell kultur? Och vilka är möjligheterna med bilder, ytor och utrymmen, rotade i en väv och form av... intet?

Malleable Matter utgår från monokroma sidor. Läsaren uppmanas att ta bort dessa abstrakta utrymmen från publikationen och svara på vilket sätt de vill. Detta utrymme kan skäras,

Eugenia Ivanissevich, Migrare, 2020 Jag undersöker det geometriska nät som ofta lärs ut i skolorna i syfte att visualisera en 3D-form. Det är en resa från ett tillstånd till ett annat: från tredimensionellt, påtagligt och hållbart, till att utgöra en teknisk ritning eller vinjettering, en plan kontur som när den viks åter får volym. Jag pausade på orden omformning och tänka om i förhållande till plats, något som fick mig att hitta samband mellan ytor, geometriskt nät, former och kartor.

Historiska och samtida kartor över Landskrona väckte ytterligare min nyfikenhet och satte fokus på vallgraven som omger Landskrona Citadell. Den förändrade kartan och dess relation till platsen levde, vandrade, byggde, delade, övergav, älskade, känd som okänd, anlände till och lämnade.

Denna form är dynamisk och elastisk i dess tolkningar. Ibland ser jag i den en båt, som minner om min farfarsfars enkelresa från Malmö till Argentina i slutet av 1800-talet. Ibland ser jag en blåkopia av stadsdelar, grannskap, samhällen; andra gånger en fågel. Och andra dagar talar formen till mig som en latent förskjutning. Jag inbjuder dig att ta del av en form i flöde: att omvandla, manipulera, återuppfinna.
