Covid 19 was Victoria’s “Punch in the face” In 2020 Victoria went from: THE PLACE TO BE to THE STATE OF EMERGENCY to THE STATE OF DISASTER. The health, social, and economic impacts of Covid-19 have been widely reported. The Landscaping industry has operated through the Covid-19 crisis with only minimal impact compared to a lot of other industries. We have, however, experienced ongoing uncertainty which causes stress in many ways. Please keep taking care of your physical and mental health, and that of the people close to you, particularly your family, friends, and work colleagues. To restrict people movement and therefore the spread of infection, people were required to spend large amounts of time within their property boundaries. There were also restrictions for short periods of exercise in nearby open spaces and parks. As a result, there is now a greater appreciation for the mental and physical health benefits of spending time in quality amenity spaces – our backyards and parks.

Governments at all levels are providing financial stimulus packages to boost economic activity and some of these measures will provide an additional pipeline of work for Landscapers in Victoria with benefits additionally flowing through to our supplier partners and sponsors. Our best opportunity to respond to the increase in activity is to proudly promote ourselves as the best in the industry; that is, as Master Landscapers.

So proudly promote your LVML Master Membership when marketing and quoting work and let your future client know that you will provide best practice, best value, and the best outcome for them. Continuing to advocate for change In a year when we thought we had a clear run at getting back to normal, we have been reminded twice already that 'normal' can be very fleeting. The Landscape Show was delivered by the skin of its teeth, with Victoria going into lockdown barely 24 hours later. But boy, what great big toothy smiles were on people's faces, under their masks indoors of course! Having the opportunity to enjoy a trade event in a face to face environment was fantastic, despite the fact that at times the months, weeks and days preceding May 26th felt like the Hunger Games, with numerous obstacles threatening the very survival of the 2021 show. In the end we prevailed with the winning combination of 76 enthusiastic businesses supporting the event and 1000 people on site on the day. Check out our full review of the show on page 23.

They are aware of our calls to be able to work outdoors unhindered and although we hope not to experience further lockdowns, we remain confident that landscaping will continue to be front of mind and any future restrictions will be void of an overlay of "occupied sites" preventing some of our Members from working. LVML continues to advocate for change with Business Victoria regarding the business support funding which, in 2020 and again this year, does not recognise Landscape Construction (ANZSIC Code 3219) or Architectural Design Services (Code 6921) as eligible for support, despite businesses being shutdown and unable to operate remotely.

As the President, Andrew Grasby mentions in his article, opportunity abounds for our industry right now, but that also comes with challenges. There have been times when the thought of a pipeline of work for Members extending months and months into the future would have delighted every landscaper in the State, but I know many of you are mentally exhausted and 'over it'. The last 15 months have been unsettling on businesses and families, so it is important to acknowledge that although there is much to be grateful for, it is not easy at times. Make sure you look after your staff, and yourself, perhaps trying to ensure that everyone in your business has a 'long weekend' every now and then. And reach out for help if you feel you need help. The wonderful thing about this industry is its people, and there is plenty of support available if you need it.

Two additional lockdowns this year imposed on Victorians have been debilitating to many, however it is pleasing to see that the tireless work undertaken last year advocating for our industry has resulted in 'landscaping' getting a direct mention from the Premier's Office whenever new restrictions are announced.

Work also continues within the training sector to attract people to the industry to assist Members experiencing labour shortages. The problem is widespread and will not be solved overnight however we are tackling the problem from as many angles as possible, including a customised script in our most recent radio campaign.

Most tradespeople can’t work without their tools, and if you are a contractor or subcontractor, you are likely self-employed, which means if problems arise you can’t earn any money until your tools are replaced. With our temperate climate and true seasonal change, Victoria is a gardener’s paradise. Regarded as “The Garden State” since the early 1900s, we are often spoilt for choice, as our climate allows us to grow a seemingly endless assortment of plants. Often when we think of gardens bursting with colour, our thoughts tend towards the myriad of colour that reflects the seasonal flowers, perennials, annuals, and flowering shrubs. It is no surprise that some of the most stunning seasonal statements can be created with feature deciduous trees which sit proudly as a focal point, a living sculpture, with year-round interest in leaf colour, blossom, and bark. There are more varieties of deciduous trees to choose from than there are shades of autumn colour. It helps to understand which are best suited to our climate and growing conditions and what to plant where, to thrive in your client’s garden. IAN FIRTH, WARNERS NURSERIES 1. Ginkgo biloba 'Piedmont Pillar' – With evidence of its survival for over 200 million years, the Ginkgo is considered natures living fossil. A tall, narrow tree with distinctive twolobed foliage that changes from a deep green to golden yellow in autumn. The leaves tend to fall rapidly as the temperature drops creating a golden bed around the base. It’s fastigiate upright nature is perfect for smaller spaces and courtyards. 2. Pyrus Cleveland Select - An ever-popular, narrow pyramidal tree with a dense growth habit and attractive symmetrical branching. It produces long lasting brilliant orange/red foliage during autumn, followed by attractive white flowers in spring and a magnificent glossy green shade canopy in summer. This is ideal for narrow areas like driveways or garden boundary plantings. 3. Crepe myrtles offer something all year round with flower in summer, autumn colour and gorgeous bare mottled trunks in winter. They perform well in hot, dry conditions, making them perfectly matched for Melbourne’s hot summers. Crepe myrtle is a stunning addition to any garden, making a great small feature tree. Pair them with edibles such as olives, citrus or ornamental pears, or shrubs like Rhaphiolepis ‘Spring Pearl’ or Nandina Moonbay. 4. Malus gorgeous - The crab apple features burning orange, flame red leaves in autumn to stunning blossom covered branches in spring when bright red fruit contrasts against golden autumnal leaves against a crisp blue sky. It is a small tree with a spreading growth habit. The branching structure of this tree is very attractive during winter and its compact nature makes it suitable for planting in small formal gardens, large containers or anywhere that space is limited.

As summer ends and the days shorten, shadows lengthen, and the temperature drops, our winding country roads, tree-lined suburban streets, and botanical gardens glow red, yellow, and orange signalling the beginning of autumn. Our interest in seasonal colour is never more evident than with the boost to regional tourism in Victoria as holiday makers flock to areas like Bright and the Macedon Ranges to experience the warmth of autumn colour emerging from a blanket of fog.

After Dan lost a close mate to suicide in late 2015, it became obvious that there was a significant lack of understanding around mental health, particularly among young men working in trades. The lads started TradeMutt in 2018, a social enterprise work-wear company designed to drive conversations about mental health, but Dan and Ed knew that they wanted to further their work and provide a solution for anyone seeking help. Proceeds from the sales of TradeMutt workwear support the goal of TIACS to change themental health services landscape making it accessible and affordable and in doing so reduce the number of suicides in Australia.

The Landscape Show 2021 What a ripping day! Packed full of activities, learning experiences, and networking opportunities for exhibitors and attendees alike, The Landscape Show 2021 at Caulfield Racecourse was met with enthusiasm by around 1,000 industry professionals. By the slimmest of margins with Victoria going into lockdown 4.0 the very next night, we were absolutely thrilled to be able to deliver this growing trade show and get together with everyone after Covid forced the show online in 2020. Landscape practitioners who took time out of their busy schedule to attend were able to see a range of exciting, innovative new products on display from more than 76 exhibitors, as well as take part in an array of informative and educational seminars held in the VBA-sponsored Learning Hub. Many Exhibitors commented on how the simplicity of meeting with a customer face to face benefitted their overall experience, having been unable to do so for most of last year. Especially through these difficult and busy times, Exhibitors also relished the opportunity to show their continued support for the landscaping industry and we can’t say a big enough thanks to them all. The benefits didn't stop with the Exhibitors either - fantastic attendee reviews from the day showed how much this event is valued by the industry! What’s the one thing in any garden that, after all your best efforts, still causes major issues and major headaches? …. Weeds.

So, what’s a solution?

Then what’s a better solution?

Effective Herbicide use.

Pre-emergent herbicides.

Simply put, a weed is a plant growing in the wrong spot. On their own, not hard to remove. As a group, time consuming and costly to manage whether it be a domestic situation or broader landscape area such as parks and sporting fields because they grow, seed and spread quickly.

You can cover a wide area in a short time and control what’s there. This approach is the most commonly used with what’s defined as NonSelective Post-Emergent Herbicides. Some of the most common are:

An innovative approach that effectively deals with weeds, while also reducing the associated costs, Pre-Emergent Herbicides are a way of treating weed free soil to prevent the weed seeds growing back for a period. They’ll inhibit the growth of small, germinated weeds and stop them before they become a visual issue.

In public spaces, weed-infested gardens and landscapes are unattractive and at worst create wastelands that the public avoid. On the flip side, well-managed landscapes are a haven for community activity. By doing all we can to enhance these spaces, we can play a significant role in enhancing the health of the local population.

Round-Up (Glyphosate) - a Systemic herbicide meaning it is absorbed and runs through the veins of the weed and effectively stops the roots absorbing moisture. Basta (Glufosinate Ammonium) and Slasher (Pelargonic Acid) - contact herbicides which means they will generally kill the cells of the part of the plant that it hits.

Currently, post-emergent herbicides dominate management processes to controls all weeds and some grasses in one pass. The problem this poses is that once a weed has entered an area and established itself, greater resources are required to control its spread and reduce its impact. Often, subsequent applications are required to get on top of the infestation once the weeds germinate again. This usually involves manual labour which is a time-consuming and costly option. 28 of 4 4

Science shows this preventative approach can disrupt weed seed germination for up to 6 months. The effectiveness of a Post-Emergent Herbicide can be amplified by an application with a Pre-Emergent Herbicide as the second method will cut the number of seeds that will attempt to germinate in future months. Essentially, Pre-Emergents can be applied once per season, rather than needing to apply a post-emergent monthly or bi-monthly. This saves you significant time, labour and expense without compromising on the quality of your greenspace.


dealing with weeds

A number of Pre-Emergent Herbicides are available:

After spraying you can lightly water the Barricade into the soil or wait for a light rain event to wash it into soil where it binds with soil particles to create the barrier against weeds. Round-Up would typically be used to reduce weeds, then followed with an application of Barricade that would significantly reduce the number of weeds germinating. Depending on the situation control is around 90%+. The one application significantly reduces the need to return to the site on a monthly basis to conduct another application of the glyphosate.

Sierraron 4G - a granular option distributed with an applicator/spreader over the area. Again watered in, the active ingredient binds strongly to the soil, minimising the potential for run-off or leaching. So long as soil is present Sierraron G goes to work after watering in and it eliminates most annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and grasses for up to 6 months. Where are the best areas to use Pre-Emergent Herbicides? • • • • •

Garden Beds around plants Gravel driveways and paths. Fence lines, tennis courts, etc Around the base of trees in parks Driveways

In summary, the use of a Pre-Emergent Herbicide can: • • •

Reduce the reliance on post-emergent sprays Reduce the visits to the garden for weed control in general Help maximise the growth of the plants you want to grow, not the one you don’t!!

After you have mastered the application of the Pre-Emergent Herbicides, your gardens will be less work, easier to maintain and better looking over the long term, delivering a beautiful landscape for all to enjoy.

You’ll know after using either the liquid or granule option where they are best suited in your specific situation and location. In the spring as the ground heats up and weeds begin to germinate, the weeds will hit the preemergent barrier in the soil and die. Essentially, the pre-emergent is killing the weed while it is still underground, before it can fully grow and appear in your lawn area, garden bed or turf area. 29 of 4 4

Barricade (Prodiamine) - can be applied directly over the plants in most situations by spraying over garden beds or turf, with no harm to what’s growing.


an inspirational group of leaders President's Lunch From humble beginnings in 1966 with just a handful of members gathering together under the name of the Landscape Contractors Association Victoria, the peak industry body now known as Landscaping Victoria Master Landscapers has been led by a variety of volunteer Presidents. The one thing they have all had in common is the desire to see their industry flourish.

Despite the passage of time since they may have led the Association, their passion for the job and the joy derived from their careers was still evident as eleven past Presidents joined current President Andrew Grasby at a luncheon where stories from across the decades were shared. The one piece of advice every single President would offer to Members is to get involved at every opportunity. The support, advice and friendships each of them has taken with them are life-changing and life-long. It was a privilege to get an insight into the history of the Association and understand the work this inspirational group have undertaken to allow the Association to become what it is today. How to stay on your game now that COVID-19 has caused an increase in enquiries and demand for your services

Since May, many landscapers have been reporting increased enquiries and sales, which is great news! However, some landscapers have asked us, “how do I manage my business so that profits stay high and I can continue to take advantage of this busy period?” Here is how we would answer this question. 1. Don't Quote Every Potential Job It is essential to know who your best, and who your second-best clients are. In other words, who is your target market and secondary market? Create a profile of these clients so you are clear on who they are. During this busy period only quote projects for your target market. We know it's hard to say no to some prospects, so create a process that ensures you assess every potential client well before deciding whether you will visit their site. That process begins with qualifying a client properly. 2. Qualify Your Client When a new prospect emails or phones you with an initial enquiry, it is important to have a small list of qualifying questions so you can decide if this prospect fits your target market or your secondary market. Take the time (10 – 20mins) to discuss their potential project and gather some details.

3. Do Not Change The Way You Do Things Do not be tempted to cut corners or rush through a job so that you can squeeze in another project. This approach will have critical repercussions, like making mistakes, higher costs and jobs taking longer to finish. So follow the systems and processes that have served your business well to date. 4. Quote and Manage Jobs for Greater Profit Continue to quote your projects with accurate costs (man hours, materials, sub-contractors, etc) so that you know what Net Profit you will earn. Plan and manage all projects well so quoted profit is realised. 5. Plan Your Week Every Friday, it is essential to plan the next week. Tasks such as: Revise construction/ maintenance schedules, quoting, job inspections, new client meetings, key team meetings, marketing posts, looking at cashflow, will all need to be scheduled for next week. If you stay at least one week ahead at all times, you will prevent getting overwhelmed by being busy and will deal with any surprises in a much better way. 6. Continue Regular Meetings with Key Employees Continue to conduct weekly meetings with key employees to ensure everyone stays accountable, encouraged, and supported. These important meetings help to keep your business on track and stable.

7. Continue to Actively Market your Business You are currently busy, but you have to assume that it won’t stay that way forever. One way to ensure that you will always have a flow of enquiries is to create a marketing plan and work it regularly (every week or fortnight). Some simple strategies to include are updating your website with professional images and videos, post quality images on Instagram and Facebook regularly, booking professional photography shoots, and building your alliances. 8. Sell to Fill Your Future Project Timeline Do not feel pressured to fit jobs! Focus on winning work when your current timeline of work finishes. If you are booked out for several weeks, potential clients will know that all quality contractors have full schedules for several months ahead, so your full schedule will impress them and create a greater demand for your services.

So the succinct answer is to keep doing all the fundamentals that have served your business well. There is no need to cut corners, rush to finish work, lower your standards, or try and squeeze in work that will jeopardise current projects. Plan your future weeks in advance and make your employees accountable. Maintain a strong work ethic and you will set your business up nicely for the rest of 2021 and beyond.
