Message from the LQ Board Over the past year, the Landscape Queensland Board and team have remained focused on the key issues that directly impact our members and the future of our industry. A major part of this work continues to be advocacy. We are actively engaging with state and national bodies to push for meaningful reform in licensing, training access and funding.

Our industry is unique. It blends construction, horticulture, design and supply, which often places members across multiple regulatory frameworks and government departments. This complexity creates barriers that are not always visible but are deeply felt by those doing the work. We continue to advocate for clearer, more coordinated regulation that better reflects the way our industry works. Our goal is to make it easier for businesses to operate, grow and train the next generation.

This year, we have strengthened relationships with regulators, progressed training access, and continued to push for national recognition of landscape skills. This work takes time and persistence. It is driven by the collective voice of our members and the strong relationships we have built across government, industry and education.

Alongside advocacy, the Board and team have remained active in directly supporting businesses. We have worked with members navigating licensing, workforce challenges and strategic growth. These real conversations continue to inform our approach and ensure our work stays connected to the everyday realities of running a landscape business.

Workforce continues to be one of the most pressing challenges. In response, Landscape LinkUP was created to support industry-led solutions in skills attraction and job readiness. The first phase has already been active through education outreach and careers expos.

The next stage includes training tools, skills-matching functions and the launch of the new Landscape LinkUP Jobs Board — now nearing activation, with more details to be shared with members soon.

We are also focused on practical business support. Over the coming months, Landscape Queensland will deliver a series of workshops to help members build capability and confidence, with Construction Skills Queensland funding available to support participation. The first of these will be a Tendering and Procurement Workshop, delivered by GovReady and tailored specifically for Queensland’s landscape sector. It will provide practical tools to help contractors engage more confidently in government and major project procurement.

CREEC Adventure Playground

Glascott Landscape & Civil’s Award-winning CREEC Adventure Playground isn’t just a place to play, it’s a space where nature, learning and community come together...

Delivered for Moreton Bay Regional Council, the new playground transformed the Caboolture River Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) in Burpengary on Gubbi Gubbi Country into a richly layered outdoor space designed to educate, inspire and connect.

Set alongside the existing all-abilities playground, the nature-themed facility encourages children of all ages to explore and learn through play. Customdesigned elements reflect local flora and fauna, creating a tactile, inclusive and ecologically rich experience.

As Principal Contractor, LQ member Glascott Landscape & Civil managed a complex site with precision and care. The team worked closely with Council, CREEC staff, landscape architects SLR, and key suppliers including UrbanPlay and Kompan to deliver a detailed and high-performing outcome.

Their role included managing demolition, extensive earthworks, bespoke water play infrastructure and the integration of custom-built play and sculptural elements within a sensitive natural environment.

The technical scope of works was extensive. It included large-scale contour mounding, detailed insitu concrete seating and pathways, softfall rubber surfacing and installation of a wide range of custom and proprietary play equipment. A water play area was constructed using a precast concrete channel and hand pump, supported by new hydraulic and stormwater infrastructure. Additional features such as shade sails, sandstone block walls, carved totems, and feature artwork were also delivered, along with extensive soft landscaping using native species.

Construction was staged to minimise disruption to the centre’s operations and protect the surrounding ecosystem.

A robust Tree Management Plan was implemented to preserve existing vegetation, while qualified fauna spotters oversaw all vegetation clearing and habitat protection. A site-specific traffic and pedestrian management plan ensured the site remained accessible and safe for staff and visitors throughout construction.

Natural textures and gradients were used throughout the playground to reinforce the site’s environmental education purpose. Mounding, softfall and sandstone features were carefully integrated to encourage exploration while preserving the integrity of the landscape.

The project was officially opened in June 2024 and has been enthusiastically embraced by the community. Designed to inspire curiosity, support inclusive play and foster connection to nature, it now stands as a long-term asset for the Burpengary region.

At the 2024 Landscape Queensland Construction Excellence Awards, the CREEC Adventure Playground took out the Commercial 4 category for projects valued between $1 million and $2 million. It then went on to receive the esteemed honour of Commercial Construction of the Year, recognising the project’s exceptional quality, attention to detail and contribution to Queensland’s public landscape.

THE GREEN SHIFT THE TURF SHED’S JOURNEY FROM DEFENCE TO TURF

After more than a decade as a Clearance Diving Officer in the Australian Defence Force, Doug and his wife Jaimie made a bold move. They left the Sydney sprawl, returned to Queensland, and built a business from the ground up—literally.

Now proud Landscape Queensland members, the couple runs The Turf Shed, a thriving, family-owned turf farm supplying high-quality, contractor-ready turf across Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. With 100 acres beside their tin shed, kids riding shotgun in the buggy, and a focus on quality over quantity, Doug and Jaimie have carved out a place for themselves in the heart of Queensland’s landscaping industry.

We caught up with the pair to hear how it all began, how innovation and family shape their operation, and why Defence veterans and landscaping make a natural match.

Tell us about The Turf Shed – and who’s behind it?

We’re Doug and Jaimie, Queensland born and bred, though we spent over a decade in Sydney while Doug served as a Clearance Diving Officer in the ADF. Doug’s always had a thing for adventure and the great outdoors (even if it meant diving headfirst into water), while I’ve always believed life’s better under the Queensland sun. After years in the concrete jungle, we wanted a real backyard where our kids could roll on genuine grass and our dogs didn’t have to settle for the fake stuff. With 100 acres next to our humble tin shed, The Turf Shed was born. We’re a small fish in a big pond, focused on quality turf and service that’s as easy as a Sunday afternoon.

The Turf Shed is known as a true family affair—kids, pets, and all! How has working alongside family shaped your business?

It means we’re a family business in every sense of the word.

Work makes it to the dinner table, and family often joins us on the job. It’s important for the future of our business. We’re lucky to have a great team that feels like an extension of our family, and we treat our clients the same way. Our kids get a front-row seat to farm life—tractor and buggy rides (they think we’re full-time buggy racers), cheeky dips in the creek, and naps on the harvester floor. It’s about blending work and play, building a legacy, and having a laugh along the way.

From soil science to water management, technology plays a growing role in modern turf farming. What innovative practices or equipment do you use?

Tech gives us a big edge. Our GPS-controlled spray units are precise, so we only apply what’s needed. We brew our own soil microbes to help the land recover after harvest. Our irrigators run overnight to conserve water, and our Firefly harvester reduces waste, which we recycle back into the farm. We aim to work smarter, stay efficient, and keep things as regenerative as possible. Tech helps us get there.

Landscapers know there’s more to turf than meets the eye. What’s one thing about turf farming that would surprise even seasoned contractors?

Turf farming isn’t about letting the grass grow and hoping for the best. It’s a mix of science and art. The real magic starts underground, with soil that’s constantly fed nutrients in a natural cycle. High-tech machinery tracks everything, making sure the turf gets what it needs to thrive. Even though it looks like neat fields of green, there’s a lot more mud and hard work behind the scenes.

What’s the most common mistake made when laying turf—and your advice for fixing it?

The biggest mistake is poor soil prep and not enough water. You can’t throw turf on dry subsoil and expect good results. Start by improving the base, use quality underlay and starter fertiliser, and keep the turf moist through the early phase. That’s what gives it the best chance to establish properly.

What’s your top advice to landscapers for helping clients maintain turf longevity?

Turf is usually the final step in a landscaping project, but watering often gets overlooked.

Landscapers should make sure homeowners know how to care for their lawn during the first month. Regular watering is the key to turning a fresh lawn into a lasting one.

What keeps you passionate about the landscaping industry?

Whether it’s a home or commercial project, we love seeing the before and after and knowing the quality we deliver made a difference. We enjoy working outdoors, solving new problems, and having fun as a family while we do it. Our own yard went from a dust bowl to a green playground, and that’s the kind of transformation we’re proud to help others create.

Doug, ADF members often find the Landscaping industry a fulfilling career transition.

What would you say to someone thinking about it?

Every Defence role is different, but for me—being a former Clearance Diver—sitting behind a desk wasn’t an option. Now, I don’t even have a desk. Defence teaches problem solving and people management, and both are essential in this industry.

When you’re out on your own, responsibility is everything. My advice: if you’re jumping in, go all in. Back yourself, stay committed, and enjoy the wins that come from hard work.

As The Turf Shed continues to grow—grass, business, and family, Doug and Jaimie are proving that quality, care, and innovation can thrive together. They’re not just producing great turf. LOOK UP AND LIVE Look Up and Live Now Integrated into the BYDA Referral Process As part of BYDA’s ongoing commitment to streamlining access to utility information and protecting the community, BYPA have introduced a new feature that integrates the Look Up and Live (LUAL) map tool into the referral service.

This enhancement involves the introduction of a hyperlink from the referral service to the Look Up and Live tool. After a user lodges a free enquiry through the referral service, they will see a Look Up and Live button in the response pane. Clicking the button will open the LUAL map in a new browser tab, automatically navigating to the proposed work site address provided in the original enquiry.

This simple upgrade to the BYDA referral service enables users to access overhead asset information for their specific worksite without needing to manually re-enter location details.

Supporting safer worksites The Look Up and Live tool is an important resource for helping prevent contact with overhead powerlines — a major cause of serious injuries and infrastructure damage on work sites.

However, it’s important to note that the Look Up and Live map does not yet include all overhead assets nationwide, with limited coverage in Northern Territory, Western Australia, and Tasmania. Users are

encouraged to consult with local asset owners to obtain all utility asset information at a proposed worksite prior to starting work.

The integration of LUAL into the BYDA referral process represents a significant step forward in making critical safety information more accessible to those planning to carry out work.

This feature reinforces BYDA’s position as Australia’s ‘one stop shop’ for utility safety. By connecting users directly to overhead asset information alongside underground asset plans, we’re helping make worksites safer and decisions more informed.

The professionals who turn ideas into reality, including skilled trades, project managers and technical teams, are essential to delivering the green infrastructure our state needs.

The success of initiatives like the Green Grid and our broader Olympic legacy depends on both strong planning and effective delivery. This requires collaboration across the full project spectrum, including designers, planners, councils, suppliers, engineers and the landscape professionals who understand what it takes to build and maintain resilient, living environments.

Glen’s insights highlight the importance of getting this right. At Landscape Queensland, we share his belief that the trees we plant today, supported by the right strategy, care and

One of the four key recommendations of this framework is to invest in a Green Grid and in Sustainable Connectivity. This strategy aims to enhance active transport, reduce the impacts of urban heat island effects (UHIE) and foster a net-positive environmental impact. The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated, as it aligns with the sentiments of key industry leaders and decision-makers. Many of whom that were lucky enough to attend the Paris
