Aaron Raines 2019 President

Looking Back: End-of-Year Reflections and Celebrating the Wins

As the year comes to an end, we tend to naturally reflect on the past year. This is important, as it enables us to appreciate our accomplishments, achievements, and successes and recollect fond, joyful memories. Though we naturally tend to reflect like this in our personal lives, it is particularly beneficial to do this in our professional lives as well. In fact, it is the core principle underlying the LCA's Excellence in Landscape Awards. Every year, we gather to review, remember, and commend the best of what our industry has to offer—the most exemplary demonstrations of quality and craftsmanship. We congratulate the winners and admire the photographs of their incredible creations, and they experience the pride of being recognized for their achievements. But as LCA members, we are incredibly skilled in our craft. We have all worked hard, achieved incredible goals, and produced fantastic work this year. We all have great successes to be proud of, and recognition of these accomplishments need not be limited to award winners, nor should it be! All of us, regardless of company size or sector, should make time this season to take pride in our various achievements this past year. Why

should we do this? Well, there are a number of reasons, but it is a particularly useful exercise in "letting go" of the stresses, challenges, and hardships you may have faced this year. Whether it was a challenging technical project, a troublesome quarter, a stressful deadline, an equipment malfunction, or an unexpected problem that arose, those challenges are stressful, and they tend to stick with us. Even when we gracefully rise to the occasion of a challenge, it can still be stressful. Reflecting on achievements is a great way to shift the mindset away from difficulty and struggle and instead take pride in all we were able to accomplish. So, how do we go about recognizing these achievements? First, personal reflection in each of our respective roles is a very important exercise in rewarding oneself. We often overlook doing this in our professional lives because we don’t stop “moving” long enough to have the thought. Was there a project you excelled at or a problem you skillfully resolved? Take a moment to feel proud of those things! The second step is at the team level. Holiday parties and festivities don’t always incorporate recognition of

achievements, but if you do have a party, it definitely should. This is an incredibly important element of workforce culture—fostering an environment in which every member of the team feels included, valued, and proud of their work. Adding awards to a preexisting event is a great way to celebrate the team’s accomplishments. Even if the company doesn’t typically have a holiday party, gathering the team to recognize achievements doesn’t need to be logistically complicated. Casually getting together over coffee and cookies to discuss some of the year’s great accomplishments is a great way to foster pride and celebrate success. There are smaller ways to recognize and celebrate success as well—hanging photos of the year’s best projects, saying “thank you” and “great job this season,” or writing handwritten thank you notes are all great gestures toward making employees feel appreciated and valued and celebrating the successes of the year. Whatever the method, the overarching theme is that we should all take a moment to say or do something that recognizes what we've worked so hard to accomplish this past year, both individually and together. Collectively, we cultivate, create, and Continued on page 8

Plant of the Month

Callicarpa dichotoma: This Beauty Is a Beast By Phil Normandy, Plant Collections Manager, Brookside Gardens

Fall is, of course, the season where we stop looking for floral hues in our landscapes and turn to plants that can provide exceptional color from changing foliage, or from fruit. Thus, a plant like Callicarpa dichotoma, a beautyberry from Asia, with its unusual violet-purple berries heavily borne along drooping stems, would seem to be a prize addition. It is as easy to grow as forsythia, keeps to a manageable size (6’ x 6’), requires little maintenance, can be counted on to provide a colorful berry display for several weeks beginning in September, and is readily available in the trade. In fact, comparison to forsythia is apt: it provides an eyecatching burst of bright color for fall just as forsythia does for spring; and both are easy to grow, cheap, and unobtrusive the rest of the year. What’s not to love?

More accolades: it flourishes in sun but looks even better in light shade, where its foliage tends not to bleach; and its light graceful form and modest size make it a good companion with fall favorites such as ornamental grasses and sedums. In garden centers, it can often be found paired with the pumpkins and pot mums to entice sales; there’s that eye-catching color at the perfect time. It has no pests of any consequence. Sold! Though the species was introduced to the United States (from Asia) in 1857, it was seldom seen outside of parks or botanic gardens for nearly a century. It seemed to find its commercial footing beginning in the late 1980s. I last wrote about this plant for these pages in fall 1996. Because of all the positives noted above, I was a big advocate for adding this beautyberry to home and commercial landscapes. Smitten, I was positively boosterish. I also had GROUNDWORK

a personal connection: Brookside Gardens imported a Japanese selection of this plant in the early 1980s for evaluation, under the name “Issai,” which roughly translates to “early (in life), or precocious.” It was claimed to be a prolific fruiter at an early age. I soon observed that all selections of this species share this trait, but I suspected that by having a cultivar name

Plant of the Month continued attached, the species might attain the commercial acceptance I thought it deserved. We even proposed a somewhat more appealing name (to Western ears, at least) for this clone— ‘Early Amethyst’—though we never officially registered it. As is the way with nicknames, that one caught on. Surprisingly, the original Japanese epithet kept traction too. Today in commerce you can find both for sale from the same sources. Trust me, they are the same plant. As with many romances, my infatuation was eventually clouded by doubt. The appeal was unchanged, certainly, but I began to suspect sneaky behavior. I was in denial for as long as possible, but I began to spot my beauty in all sorts of lowdown, out-of-the-way places with alarming frequency. By then, I had learned about the problem of invasiveness of certain introduced plants (I had resisted that, too). So unlike in 1996, I am now here pleading the case against planting purple beautyberry. And removing it when seen. I consider myself to be middle-ofthe-road on the invasiveness topic. I don’t plant only exotic or native species, and I am not concerned when I find an isolated seedling of an imported species that has jumped

from cultivation. Species of concern (to me) are ones that reproduce rapidly, establish quickly in great numbers, and actively compete with and crowd out native species in natural environments. And this is what Callicarpa dichotoma does, without a doubt. The prolific berries are beloved by birds and small animals, often disappearing by the first freeze. They sprout prolifically the following spring, and quickly put down a deep root system that’s hard to pull. Worse, seedlings seem to pop up thickly on damp, heavy soils, such as the edges of ponds. I suspect that the berries can float, giving them another competitive mode of dispersal. Fruits are produced on secondyear plants (possibly on first-year plants on good sites). Shrubs can reach 4’ x 4’ in two years and can be hard to spot because of their drooping habit—until they fruit, of course! Standard eradication methods such as digging or using herbicides work effectively, but it’s important to do this before the berries ripen, because they tend to fall off the plant during wrestling matches with landscapers and gardeners. For these reasons, we should not be planting Callicarpa dichotoma and should become vigilant and aggressive in removing it when seen. We

should stop selling it. Is this true for all Callicarpa? Possibly. Practically. There is only one species native to the Southeast United States: Callicarpa americana. It has larger clustered berries of a showy red-violet color, but it’s not an exact substitute. It is a tall, rather coarse plant in the landscape, and I have found it hard to establish in colder areas in the Maryland suburbs (it is native further south), though this may be an anomaly, or changing. Other species of Asian beautyberries I have planted at Brookside Gardens have been found popping up in neighboring forests. Fewer in number so far, but the behavior is disturbing enough that parent plants and errant seedlings have been eradicated. It’s sad when a lovely romance comes to a beastly end, but sometimes it’s for the greater good.

President's Message continued maintain spaces for people to enjoy, where they can gather with friends, spend time with their families, and play with their children. Together we manufacture, install, and maintain areas that bring people together, and for that, we are all winners.

Grand Awards J&G Landscape Design, Inc. Neighborhood Bioswale Commercial Landscape Installation

Sponsored by the Montgomery County Water Quality Protection Fund, we had the opportunity to create a 3,000-square-foot oasis in a local neighborhood. The linear garden is designed to catch, slow, and filter the stormwater runoff from the impermeable surfaces in the surrounding neighborhood. By contouring the earth, we were able to centralize and convey the excess water toward the natural drainage patterns. Combining that with native plantings, it is estimated that the landscape captures and filters almost 2 million gallons of rainwater and stops is from polluting Crabbs Branch, a tributary of Rock Creek and the Chesapeake Bay.

Ruppert Landscape

Mary Elizabeth Branch Park Commercial Landscape Installation Mary Elizabeth Branch Park is located in a master-planned community that is a public/ private partnership between the City of Austin and Catellus Development. We performed both traditional landscape work and general contracting work. Landscape construction work included excavating soil and installing topsoil, mulch, decomposed granite, sand, pavers, poured in place concrete walls, limestone veneer, concrete flatwork, fencing, a 25-zone irrigation system, drainage, a rain garden, a green roof, Bermuda sod, perennials and grasses, shrubs, trees, an interactive water feature, playground equipment, and all site amenities.

Ruppert Landscape

City Springs Commercial Landscape Installation City Springs is a 14-acre, multi-use city center. The City Green, a four-acre park within the project, includes an open lawn area, shade bosque, amphitheater, multiple plazas, and a network of fountains. When creating City Springs, the community requested that the design incorporate water and shade. Our scope included installing six water features, granite curbing, sub-slab and pavers, concrete flatwork, vehicular paving, joint caulking, planter walls, pre-cast stone veneer walls/caps and brickwork, an 86-zone irrigation system, drainage, turf, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, stainless steel handrails and guardrails, pine straw mulch, and numerous site amenities.

Ruppert Landscape

The International Spy Museum Commercial Landscape Installation The International Spy Museum is a new, build-to-suit flagship location for one of DC’s most visited organizations. The project includes three floors of museum exhibits resting on a base of retail, education, and lobby spaces. The design positions the museum as a catalyst to reinvigorate 10th Street SW and to link the National Mall and the southwest waterfront. The design team was asked to create a lightweight design that would also improve how the added foot traffic would move through the space. Our scope of work included all concrete flatwork, all pavers, landscaping, an irrigation system, and site furnishings.

E.G. Reinsch, Inc.

Dorchester Towers Roof Garden Commercial Maintenance In 1961, Arlington builder Emerson G. Reinsch opened an eight-story high-rise overlooking Washington, D.C., situated on Arlington's highest point. He included on this building the area's largest roof garden, which has been rebuilt and improved several times since. The current garden’s lightweight, soil-less planting medium and drip irrigation system have made plants and gardeners very happy. Mature Japanese red maples, pergolas with swings, a large lawn area, and lots of nooks all provide residents with a quiet place above the urban fray. The continuing interest of the Reinsch-Pierce family in maintaining this area as a showplace and an experienced in-house grounds crew have influenced lots of prospective residents to choose this building as their home.

The project included an infinity pool, an all-glass spillover spa, a full amenity pool house, a terrace and entertainment space, and gas fire features. We were able to design and deliver the client a dream outdoor living space with all their desired amenities that complements the picturesque mountains.

Our company was hired by the client to create an outdoor entertainment area to coincide with the modern architecture of their home. The client wanted a creative design that would seamlessly blend the existing highly modern architecture. The client stressed the desire for ample entertainment space attached closely to the house while keeping with the extremely contemporary aesthetic of the home.

Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Pino Residence Front Residential Planting & Entranceway

A frantic call from this client came in wondering if this home and landscape on the auction block could be renovated. We were asked to overhaul the front foundation and gardens. The front entrance layout cut the property off, leaving a large portion of the house unseen. A plan was developed to create the gardens while redirecting water across the lawn to a much-needed drainage system. The major grade change was accomplished by adding a stone planter to the right of the door, allowing us to flatten and open up the front lawn and gardens. Moving the sidewalk thoroughly changed the access to the home and reoriented the gardens. The result was a stunning driveway carrying away excess water. The beauty of this home was completely hidden before.

Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Potomac Entrance Front Residential Planting and Entranceway

The client requested a front entranceway with multiple levels that would allow the house to be the focal point. Our design team created flagstone walkways with bluestone steps and natural stone risers, stone retaining walls, stone curbing, flagstone edging, a paver parking court, and a front feature wall. The entry itself is delineated with parterre-style gardens laid out to frame the entry and give symmetry to the front of the house. Plantings such as boxwood, vinca, tree hydrangeas, and annuals create the space. Turf was used between the feature wall and the driveway to add green space and provide clean edges to the banding.

We completed a total overhaul of the backyard. The only element that was saved was the pool shell. We completely renovated the pool as part of the project, including new interior finish, auto-cover, tile, and coping. We reworked the raised beam wall by adding drainage behind and lowering the height of the wall. We designed and built a new screened porch, a rustic outdoor fireplace, a koi pond, and all new patios and walkways. All of the drainage work was redone to properly move water away from the patios and lawn areas. We installed a new sprinkler system and an extensive low-voltage lighting system. We built a BBQ grill area and used Pennsylvania bluestone slabs for walkways and step areas, HanoverÂŽ concrete pavers for the pool deck, and CarderockÂŽ building stone for the walls.

Planted Earth Landscaping, Inc. Leesburg Residence Residential Maintenance

This colonial home in historic Leesburg, Virginia, features a fresh landscape design while incorporating centuries old boxwood to create an exceptional outdoor living space. Regular care and attention to detail keep this garden looking its best throughout the changing seasons, beginning with meticulous pruning of the 100-year-old boxwood hedge in the winter. Leading up to spring, beds are edged and perennials cut back, providing clean definition between lawn and garden sections of the property. Regular thinning, separating, and deadheading follows throughout the growing season. Careful monitoring of the irrigation programs helps to keep everything healthy.

Planted Earth Landscaping, Inc. Northwest DC Residence Residential Maintenance

This modern home in Northwest Washington, D.C., features a fresh landscape design that utilizes native grasses and perennials to continue the theme of straight lines and square corners while softening the hard edges of the structure at the same time. Regular care and attention to detail keep this garden looking its best throughout the changing seasons, beginning with meticulous pruning of boxwood hedges in the winter. As spring approaches, beds are edged and perennials cut back, providing clean definition between lawn and garden sections of the property. Regular thinning, separating, and deadheading follows throughout the growing season. Careful monitoring of the irrigation programs helps to keep everything healthy.

Planted Earth Landscaping, Inc. NW Residence Residential Maintenance

The gardens surrounding this home seek to provide usable space to the homeowner while providing year-round interest. Dividing the perennial grasses along the bed edges allows us to maintain the distinct bed lines without losing the effect of the grasses themselves. Pruning and shearing the boxwood offers them the air circulation they need while keeping them shaped in their intended forms. Maintaining separation between plant types provides definition while adding depth to the gardens. Careful pruning of the hydrangea in the early spring encourages them to put on a graceful show throughout the summer. And by meticulously deadheading the perennials, we prolong the splashes of color they offer.

Rossen Landscape The Altman Residence Residential Maintenance

This project represents one of the oldest maintenance contracts for our company and encompasses both established and new areas of interest. The sequence of outdoor rooms leads guests through a series of spaces requiring unique specialty care. The large annuals rotation in both spring and fall continuously offer variety and seasonal color to the spaces while requiring constant maintenance and care. The waterfall and pond water feature also require constant maintenance to ensure clean water, happy fish, and healthy plants. This project requires both a large quantity of time for successful maintenance and a level of detail in quality that makes us very proud to serve as its caretakers.

Grand Awards Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Bethesda Modern Garden Total Residential Contracting

Our firm was hired to incorporate a design of a prominent landscape architect. The work included construction of an outdoor kitchen, terraces, fire pit, slab steps, porcelain paving, pergola, pool, spa, fireplace, and retaining walls. The garden is surrounded by screen plants since neighboring houses are within 8 feet of the property line, and houses are within 16 feet of each other. We installed all soil mixes and supplied and installed all plants, paving, turf barn steps, gravel, and seasonal color.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Great Falls Residence Total Residential Contracting

The existing landscape of this 20-year-old Great Falls, Virginia, home was outdated and boring. Our client asked us to give the entire property a facelift, with an emphasis on highquality construction material and superb craftsmanship. Our carpenters, masons, and landscape technicians rejuvenated the estate property with travertine walks and patios; a solid cedar pergola; granite cobblestone; and lush, flowering ornamental plantings throughout the property. The existing pool and spa were removed and replaced with a larger lap pool, spa, and tiled waterwall.

Planted Earth Landscaping, Inc. Chesterfield Residence Total Residential Contracting

Our clients had recently purchased this home and were looking for a new, modern feel. The existing plant material and worn stone pavings were removed, along with an outdated swimming pool in the rear of the garden. Additions to the home were constructed, and we were called in to rebuild the landscapes. This project consisted of swimming pool construction, new bluestone paving with oversized pieces of stone, IPE deck construction, major stormwater management installation (under the watchful eye of the D.C. government), a green roof on the pool house, and lots of new plantings.

Surrounds Landscape Architecture and Construction Ingleside Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build)

The Ingleside project involved a front and rear exterior renovation of the entire site. The idea was to enhance the beauty and usability of the site. The homeowner wanted more space to entertain and enjoy the lot. The scope of work from a design/build perspective included hardscaping front and rear, landscaping throughout front and rear, installing a stormwater management/infiltration trench per county ordinance, incorporating irrigation and lighting throughout, installing a decorative iron entry gate and outdoor audio in rear, and performing all grading and excavation.

Surrounds Landscape Architecture and Construction Admirals Hill Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build)

The project was a full site redesign of the front and rear areas. The project consisted of new front hardscape to include new driveway with paver motorcourt and aprons, new brick walls with steps, new front walkways, and new retaining wall along the front property line; new rear hardscapes to include pool, spa, new raised terrace with outdoor grill area, two firepit areas, a pool house with masonry fireplace, pool deck, gravel path to walk park area, and all walkways, steps, and walls throughout rear space; new landscaping throughout; new lighting throughout; new drainage throughout; and all grading and earthwork.

We sited the house on the property and worked closely with the civil engineer to provide the requirements by Fairfax County. It was a long process due to the extent of the project. We built all of the hardscapes and installed all the stone and over 4,000 sq. ft. of paving. The drainage system was very intensive. Every drop of water is treated on site via infiltration and biofiltration systems. We planted dozens of mature trees and installed hundreds of LED lights. We also built custom fences and IPE decks and worked with a swimming pool contractor to build the pool.

Musically Inspired Nature Playspace Commercial Landscape Installation (Design/Build) Property owners wanted to retrofit the existing playground with natural play materials and musically inspired play elements. We designed a play area with a variety of play elements, including sand boxes, balance beams, a sliding hill, and tree houses to encourage exploration and play. A sensory path leads to a number of musical instruments located along the main path, creating opportunities for nontraditional play and to create music on the playground. Plantings are minimal to maximize play space, but the plants are strategically placed to create shade.

Complete Landscaping Service Fair Lakes League Commercial Maintenance

Fair Lakes League is the name given to the infrastructure that runs through a portion of the town of Fair Lakes, Virginia. This project is bordered by Stringfellow Road, Route 66, and West Ox Road and contains roadway care and maintenance along Fair Lakes Parkway, Fairfax County Parkway, Fair Lakes Circle, and Fair Lakes Boulevard. Often times, roadway maintenance is not very intensive and is made up predominantly of mowing; however, this contract includes a full range of maintenance services, including seasonal color installation, a full turf care program, and an irrigation service policy.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Southern Maryland Residence Craftsmanship

Our firm was asked to construct Phase 2 of the landscape plan, which featured a heavy timber framed pavilion, a travertine pool deck, and a small swimming pool. The outdoor living space highlights the craftsmanship of our carpenters and masons and provides a seamless additional entertainment space for the client.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Alexandria Residence Craftsmanship

Old Town Alexandria is home to many courtyard gardens and homes. Our team was asked to renovate an existing 20 x 25-foot courtyard that was outdated and in need of renovation. Our team replaced the tired flagstone with silver travertine and built a brick grill skirt with a honed flagstone countertop. The existing stone fire pit and wall were reconstructed with new 20-inch gauged flagstone caps. The superb craftsmanship is apparent to all who visit the property.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Old Town Residence Craftsmanship

The existing courtyard brick patio was failing and unusable. The new owner asked us to demolish the existing patio and build a new, detailed brick courtyard space that was more interesting and suitable for outdoor entertainment. The new patio featured several intricate paving details, a grill counter with a brick skirt and granite countertop, and the client's statuary strategically placed in the planting spaces.

Distinction Awards Land & Water Design Virginia Resort Style Living Craftsmanship (Design/Build)

In April 2017, we received a call from a potential client wanting to meet and discuss design of a deck and porch combination. By the time our walkabout consultation ended, we had created a vision of a custom open porch and composite deck with a custom outdoor kitchen overlooking a natural, freeform pool; a large tanning shelf; a 25-foot waterslide; and a raised stone, veneered oversized spa. For the cool evenings, we pictured a two-tier gas fire table outside of the spa where the family and friends could enjoy a panoramic view of their entire future backyard. We walked away with a signed design/build contract for everything we had suggested and proposed a 6- to 8-month timeframe for project completion.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Oak Hill Residence Front Residential Planting and Entranceway

Although the landscape of this brick colonial home was adequate, the owner wanted a more colorful and welcoming entry. We transplanted some of the existing plant material and added new colorful ornamental plantings. Additionally, we rebuilt the existing flagstone walkway and created a flagstone entry with brick details. Simple, colorful, and inviting best describes this residential entry.

Rossen Landscape The Anderson Residence Outdoor Living Area

The client wanted to add interest as well as usable space in their previously undeveloped rear yard. They wanted both an outdoor oasis for relaxing as well as a space under the deck to appreciate the outdoors in an insect-free screened porch during summer nights and with a built-in fireplace for cooler evenings. Situated below the deck, this space brought the added challenge of waterproofing its guests from its secondary, overhead function. Their desire for a naturalistic ambiance to the outdoor space gave rise to the concept of the stream, waterfall, and small terminal pond. Within the water feature, aquatic and riparian plants were used to reinforce the sense of a natural streambed flowing down the existing grade of the yard. The addition of a small rock bridge offers a change to interact with the feature as they pass over its meandering path from one side to another.

Distinction Grand Awards Awards Kane Landscapes, Inc. Odeh Residence Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build)

The goal of the homeowners was to create an amazing backyard entertaining and pool environment to enjoy wonderful memories with their growing children and friends. A 32-foot waterslide makes the biggest statement as you enter the backyard. The pool and patio hardscapes are constructed of travertine set at a 45-degree angle on a concrete slab. Sandblasted and hand chipped limestone caps were chosen to provide minor contrast to the color of the stony point walls and travertine flooring. Custom cast-iron covers provide detail to the drainage system, while a reclaimed barn post was selected to become the mantle on the fireplace. Petrous gold granite for the multiple kitchens and serving bars ties all the stonework together.

Wheat's Landscape Design + Construction Glenbrook Road Family Retreat Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build)

Our clients wanted more out of their backyard and dove into a design/build process, which resulted in their ideal urban retreat. Initially, the vast majority of the existing outdoor space was occupied by a pool. The clients wanted to keep a pool while adding significant play space and a covered outdoor room. The new outdoor space is configured to link the family’s play, swim, and lounging activities. A roofed outdoor structure extends the house and provides areas for eating and lounging. The hardscape is faced with sandblasted marble paving, treads, caps, and veneer. The pool features marble tiles and coping. The rear play area is covered in durable synthetic turf. A zone-dimming LED lighting system extends playtime into the evening.

We collaborated with the client to perform a complete makeover of the property. The existing landscape, including 10 mature canopy trees that blocked all sunlight to the property, was demolished. Our masons, carpenters, and landscape technicians worked as a team to create a new landscape featuring an arrival court, stone walkways, gazebo renovation, pool renovation, a new outdoor kitchen, and plantings throughout the entire property.

The client, in a high-pressure career, wanted a quiet retreat in the back of his wooded lot in Annapolis, Maryland. We were hired to create a simple yet elegant aesthetic that would play off the surrounding wooded landscape.

Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Green Residence Outdoor Living Area

This outdoor living area is complete with travertine terraces, pool deck, infinity pool, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, pool house, and structural retaining wall. The linear makeup of this yard is due to restrictions of a natural stream on the left and a tight property line on the right. The restrictions did not hinder us in developing a yard that has function both with green space and hardscape. The property has a very large turf and play area for the family's young children and is framed by lush plantings on all sides.

Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes Residential Exterior (Broome) Outdoor Living Area

This secluded single-family home in a prominent Great Falls neighborhood had a beautiful backyard setting. The owners recently built a gorgeous pool and deck. A rundown deck sat off the kitchen patio doors. They researched and compared designs for several years before zeroing in on our designers and architects. Our staff put together a two-story outdoor living space that offers this couple and their children everything they want. Our plan was massive and required quite a bit of excavation to make their lower level patio both attractive and functional.

Live Green Landscape Associates Clarksville Residence Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build)

This client's backyard consisted of a large slope that was unusable, and they wanted to create a space for outdoor entertaining and living. The design included a large number of stairs and retaining walls to create a space with a fireplace, outdoor kitchen, covered and uncovered seating, and storage. The fireplace is a custom-built structure, and the wood mantle started life in the 1800s as a barn beam. We created a small shed that shares the roof with the cabana. The shared wall of the shed and covered patio includes provisions for an outdoor television plus lighting controls for the patio.
