Remember—Take a Breath!

Whew, what a summer! Excessive rain, demanding clientele, rising material costs, and having to look under every rock to find good employees were just a few of the challenges conveyed to me by many green industry professionals this year. A statement I heard a lot was “We are so busy, I didn’t even get a chance to go on vacation this summer.”

Unfortunately, I must admit that I am one of those 40% of Americans who did not take a true vacation away from home. Now, I did make it to the lake for a long weekend or two; however, those weekends were what experts are now calling a “workcation.” Workcations happen when you go on vacation but are still connected to the office and clients, typing out emails on your laptop or the ever-present smartphone. As my wife and kids would quickly tell you, “those vacations do not count.” And looking back, I have to agree.

A lot of studies have been published reporting that not taking a break causes us not only to miss out on the experiences, moments, and memories that make life great, but also that the constant demands of work can have negative effects on our lives. When reading through these studies, it is easy to feel that the researchers obtained their data from Captain Obvious. The research found that people who take vacations

and travel are happier at home and with their companies, experience less burnout, have stronger personal relationships with family and/or friends, and have better physical health and wellbeing. Moreover, the studies conclude that “employees who forfeit vacation time are lower performers compared to their counterparts who take all their vacation time, they are less likely to have been promoted within the last year (23% to 27%), and are less likely to have received a raise or bonus in the last three years (78% to 84%)”1 And, unsurprisingly, they are more likely to report being stressed. Yet, still so many of us tend to feel we are too busy or too vital to the day-to-day operation to take that much needed break.

The lawn and landscape industry is made up of some of the hardest working women and men I have ever met.

Oddly, many of us tend to put an excessive amount of value on how many hours we work each day and how many days we work each week instead of the results obtained in those hours. Every successful business person will tell you “work smarter, not harder” and that you must find balance to be truly successful. The best way to work is to figure out your strengths and build upon those to reach your goals in the quickest and most efficient manner possible. You have to set your goals,

break them into reasonable pieces, and then set timelines. When you set these timelines, you need to account for the unknowns that may delay you, but you should also account for personal and family time. Autumn is just around the corner, with kids going back to school and the weather turning cooler. Make sure to take some time before summer is officially over for that vacation, enjoy the warm weather, and be truly “present” with your family and friends. It will make you a better person both at home and work, and it may even get you a raise!

Speaking of what a hard-working industry we are in, I need to say a big THANK YOU! to the almost 100 dedicated volunteers who gave up their Saturday, starting at 6 am, to help test our colleagues who are looking to be recognized for the skills they have learned.

We were fortunate to have nice weather and a wonderful crew from Great American Landscapes again this year, which made teardown and cleanup a painless process. Thank you all again!

Japanese Anemone— A Late Bloomer

What is the number one thing we constantly search for when planning a new garden? Consistent seasonal color! With summer perennials pushing out their last blooms, families returning from their summer vacations, and kids going back to school, the Japanese anemone reminds us that fall is right around the corner and cooler weather is on the horizon.

A native to China, the anemone has established itself as a historical icon in Japanese gardens, and consequently here in our U.S. gardens.

The Japanese anemone is versatile in both shade and sun, as long as its roots have consistent moisture.

Every few years, it may be worthwhile to divide the plants due to their rhizomes spreading with time.

Another worthy note: I have not seen the deer damage them here in

the D.C. area. Both you and your clients will be able to rest easy at night knowing that they won’t be devoured before daybreak. Furthermore, I have not observed any major insect or disease issues here in the mid-Atlantic.

Japanese anemones come in assorted colors, most notably white and pink for the hybrid cultivars. ‘Honorine Jobert’ and ‘September Charm’ are my personal favorites. They are exceptional as cut flowers and can add a nice touch of color in cottagestyle gardens. In a more formal setting, I suggest planting them behind low boxwood hedges, as their flowers will provide a nice contrast against the boxwood’s dark foliage and stand out above the hedge.

This sprawling 300-acre corporate campus for a global banking organization was designed to reflect both its dynamic results-oriented culture and the park-like West Creek environment. This Richmond campus houses 13 commercial office buildings, five sports fields, walking trails, outdoor cafes, naturalized areas, and more for the enjoyment of over 9,000 employees and numerous visitors. The entire site is designed to promote interconnectivity and harmony with its natural setting.

The maintenance of the site includes care of 105,000 perennials/grasses/ shrubs, 550 annuals, 40 acres of turf, and 4,000 trees as well as watering, transplanting of mature material, edging, mulching, and sports field maintenance. Since taking over the site’s maintenance, approximately 50 enhancements have been performed to help augment this site’s visual appeal.

related to poor growing conditions and maintenance rather than insects or diseases. The causes of these problems are usually root or trunk-related issues. So, let’s start with a look at the planting conditions Japanese maples need in order to thrive.

Planting and Care The group of small ornamental shade trees lumped under the name Japanese maples, Acer palmatum and A. japonicum, and their many hybrids, are very popular with gardeners and plant enthusiasts. Most of the questions we receive about problems with Japanese maples are horticulturally

Japanese maples generally grow slowly and mature to heights of 30–40 feet or less, especially for the dissectum types (18 feet) and the dwarfs (3–6 feet), over a 50-year period. The green forms can tolerate full sun, but most will prefer some afternoon shade, and this is

especially true of all the colored and variegated forms. During hot summers, sunburn and bronzing of the foliage can occur, even if adequately watered, and leaf scorch will definitely occur under drought conditions. So, think of the growing conditions that are best for rhododendrons and azaleas, with slightly acidic, well-drained soils, and you will have the right conditions for Japanese maples.

These trees have shallow, very fine root systems that need a cool, evenly moist place to grow. Severe drought will kill roots from heat and desiccation. After establishment, the aerial parts of Japanese maples can survive freezes down to zero, however the roots can only survive to 14 °F. So roots need protection in severe winters, especially if planted in above ground containers. A light covering of mulch will help to protect roots and conserve water.

Container-grown plants need special care since their roots are even more vulnerable to drying and freeze damage. Containers may need added insulation or relocation to more protected areas during severe winter conditions. In-ground plants should be sited with these issues in mind.

Japanese Maples in Maryland Landscapes continued Pests, Diseases, and Problems The most common question we receive is “why are my leaves turning brown along the edges?” This problem is referred to as leaf scorch. This symptom can be especially severe on dissected leaved cultivars since their leaves are very delicate and thin. The solution is to plant where the tree will receive some afternoon shade to prevent heat damage and to provide a uniform water supply.

Bare root and ball-and-burlap plants should only be planted during the dormant season. Container plants can be planted throughout the season, provided their root balls are carefully spread and special attention is given to watering. Japanese maples are not heavy feeders, so most don’t need fertilization unless they are grown in containers.

Japanese maples will benefit from thoughtful pruning and shaping during their lifespan. Major pruning should be done during the dormant period, except from January to May, when the sap is rising and bleeding may occur. Light pruning and removal of dead wood can be done anytime.

At noted above, roots can be damaged by heat and drought. Severe freezes also will kill shallow roots and the inner bark of the trunk. In such cases, the symptoms will progress from leaf scorch to leaf drop, and to branch and trunk dieback. In some cases a good portion or maybe half of the tree may die along one side especially if prevailing winds come from that direction. Trees located near structures that retain or reflect heat, such as white walls, patios, and sidewalks, can also damage foliage from overheating and droughty soils.

This dead twiggy growth should be removed to thin the canopy and allow for better air circulation, and also to expose more of the interesting branch structure of the tree itself.

Prune out dead twigs at any time. Pruning also increases air circulation around the foliage.

Another common problem we hear about is dieback of the fine twiggy growth on the inside of the foliage canopy, especially on laceleaf cultivars. This is because of the dense leaf

In total, there are many Japanese maple cultivars for the garden landscape with numerous horticultural attributes that keep this tree in high demand and versatile in many landscape design situations. With a little care in planting and maintenance, Japanese maples can be beautiful additions to our gardens. One cautionary note: if you live near a natural area, some cultivars of Japanese maples have been observed to escape cultivation and seed into forested areas. Keep this in mind as you make new plant selections.

A frequent question we receive is about spotting or damage to the leaves. This often is caused by rough handling of young plants, freeze damage to young leaf buds, and physical bruising caused by windy conditions. In very wet spring weather, fungal diseases can infect the leaves.

These include leaf spots, usually caused by Phyllosticta. Anthracnose diseases, which appear as irregular blotches anywhere on the leaves, are caused by three fungi—Colletotrichum, Discula, Aureobasidium. The solution again is proper siting of trees so that they receive moderate weather exposure and have good air circulation to reduce the likelihood of fungal infection.

Are Muskrats, Beavers, and Otters Harmful to Lakes and Ponds?

By Gavin Ferris, Ecologist at SOLitude Lake Management As an ecologist, I field questions on topics ranging from the lifespan of a tadpole to the best way to defend koi against the ravages of a great blue heron. Of all the animals I am asked about, however, three mammals probably produce the most concern and curiosity: the muskrat, the beaver, and the otter.

Each of these aquatic animals plays a unique role in the environment, fulfilling a niche that contributes to its

ecosystem, and all three animals are frequently found together, thanks largely to the services provided by the beaver. Beavers are perhaps the world’s first engineers, modifying their environment to suit their needs. Relying on deep water for safety, beavers have an innate drive to dam up moving water. When they see a stream, they want it to be a pond. As a result, they often create habitat for other aquatic wildlife, including fish, amphibians, water-

fowl and, of course, muskrats and otters. In the wild, this makes them hugely beneficial, as they provide so much habitat. In a man-made waterbody, however, where the water needs to be kept at its intended level, they can be extremely destructive.

Also, their proclivity for felling trees both for timber and food can wreak havoc on expensive landscaping.

Muskrats, like most small rodents, serve as important prey for many

They feed primarily on vegetation, though they do occasionally eat some shellfish, especially in the winter. In addition to ponds, muskrats will colonize any marsh, stream, or river where adequate food can be found. Unfortunately, their burrows can cause tremendous damage to the shoreline. For some reason, they also like to chew through wiring, including the power cables of lake and pond fountains.

Otters are the only true predator of the trio, feeding primarily on fish but also settling for any other small animal they can catch in or near the water. Members of the weasel family, they are renowned for being playful and gregarious, and can be observed sliding on their bellies as if they were sledding. Otters are frequently found in and around ponds created by beavers, and have been known to kick beavers out of their lodge and take it as their own home. Unlike beavers and muskrats, otters are unlikely to cause structural damage to a pond or stormwater basin.

The main issue they pose, however, is fish predation.

Otters, like human anglers, like to catch the biggest and tastiest fish. If you value your sportfish, you should look for ways to limit the otter population in your waterbody.

For muskrats and beavers, prevention is far better than removal. Controlling shoreline vegetation like cattails and black willow seedlings will discourage muskrats, and removing woody vegetation from near the water will help to keep beavers from setting down roots. Otters, however, are not so easily discouraged.

In the instance that any of these animals takes up permanent residence where they are not welcome, trapping or lethal control may be your only recourse.

The options available for controlling muskrat, beaver, or otter populations will vary based on the laws in your state and the individual situation. It’s recommended to consult with your community and your lake management professional to determine the best management plan for these incredible creatures.

In Memoriam Francis R. Gouin, Ph.D.

of New Hampshire, where he met his wife of 56 years, Clara Olesniewicz.

He received his master’s degree 1965 and Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Maryland–College Park, where he resided until moving to Deale, Maryland, in 1990.

Francis R. “Frank” Gouin, Ph.D., passed away peacefully with family at his side, on Thursday, August 2, 2018, after a short illness, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. A retired Professor Emeritus of the University of Maryland, he was known internationally as a plant physiologist, and locally as “The Bay Gardener” writing for the Bay Weekly newspaper, as well as the author of Enough Said-Gardening Through the Seasons. Frank was a longtime member of LCA and past president, contributing to many meetings and publications, including Groundwork and the Landscape Specification Guidelines.

Frank graduated from the Thompson School of Agriculture at University of New Hampshire in 1958 and received his bachelor of science degree in 1962 from the University

Frank taught horticulture, conducted innovative research to benefit the nursery industry, published and lectured extensively, and covered the state as the Cooperative Extension Service specialist for the ornamental plant and Christmas tree growers, nurserymen, and landscape contractors. A pioneer researcher in the area of utilizing composted materials for agricultural purposes, he started the International School of Composting Science and also established the Master Gardeners Program in Maryland.

Among many accolades, he received the L. C. Chadwick Award as an Exceptional Educator from the American Association of Nurserymen, and the Norman J. Coleman Award for Horticultural Progress Through Research. Frank retired as chair of the Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department of University of Maryland in 1995, then consulted for landscape design and contracting firms, was the president and announcer for the South County Concert Association for 15 years, and was an active member of the Lothian Ruritan Club—known for his “Burger Burns and spaghetti dinners to raise scholarship funds. In recent months,

he was involved in testing a new soil amendment—“Bloom”—produced by the Blue Plains Treatment Plant in Washington.

In Deale, Frank operated “Upakrik Farm,” growing peaches, Christmas trees, and greenery for local farmers markets. He enjoyed camping with his family, canoeing and traveling with his wife. Hobbies included woodworking , ma king musica l instruments, a cedar canoe, kayak, and “shellback” dinghy, as well as restoring a sailboat, three vintage tractors, and a Model A Ford.

He leaves his loving wife Clara of Deale, daughters Cristina “Tina” G ou i n a nd B on n ie McCrack i n (Craig), as well as granddaughters Angelina and Alora and step-granddaughter Maddie. He is also survived by his brother Maurice “Mo” Gouin (Helene), nephews Norman Gouin (Cate Bourne) and Paul Gouin (Rachel), his aunt Rachel Girard, grand-nephews John-Paul and Christopher Gouin, several cousins, and many friends.
