President’s Message Get Ready for Change! The year is quickly coming to a close, a nd t he abr upt Josh Kane, CLT 2018 President change from midsummer heat and humidity to much cooler late autumn weather is a good reminder that, while we need to finish this season strong, we also need to start preparing for winter and planning for 2019. As our companies finalize budgets, forecast needs, and plan for all sorts of things in the coming year, know that the dedicated LCA staff and its board members are doing the same to ensure that your organization stays strong, relevant, and enjoyable for the members. 2018 was a year full of exciting changes for LCA. The management company that we use recently moved into new office space. Thérèse took over as our executive director and is doing an amazing job. Nationally, NALP revamped the certification program that LCA administers, allowing the test to be totally web based. This change, starting in the near future, comes with the hope that easier access to the test will lead to increased participation, in turn making these valuable certifications better known to those who use lawn care and landscaping services. Based on surveys and a member focus group held in 2017, LCA reduced the number of classroom style mini-seminars, which some felt were outdated, and replaced them with two outdoor meetings held at some of our member companies’ facilities. Networking, storytelling of old times and
current issues, making friends, and eating some good BBQ seemed to be the underlying theme that came from these evenings. Almost everyone the board has spoken with has mentioned that these new meetings were an excellent way to bring members together in a relaxed atmosphere where everyone could learn from the speakers as well as one another. All these changes over the last year have set up LCA to be even more successful in 2019. Thérèse has gained valuable experience in her new role with LCA, offered excellent suggestions on how to improve, and made some very important connections with other landscape contractor organizations in neighboring states that will allow her to provide even more assistance and guidance to the board. The upcoming board leadership is further expanding the focus on bringing members together through additional events at member company sites and at exciting venues like horticultural gardens and sporting events. With all this in the works, 2019 is shaping up to be a great year for LCA members to come together, learn, and grow. One thing the board would like to see increase is overall member participation. While many feel that the events are improving, the attendance at seminars, networking events, and the annual awards dinner has remained stagnant for the past several years. Kevin McHale, co-owner of the highly respected McHale Landscape Design,

summed it up best in his open letter after attending the recent 10 x 10 design seminar: “I am one of you! You know, the landscape professional who says they are too busy, have too much traffic, or don’t have time to attend LCA mini sessions. However, I ignored those negative thoughts and recently attended the 10 x 10 design presentation. Wow! What a great event! The diversity of speakers, design styles, and presentation format was impressive and insightful. As usual, I left the LCA event inspired and educated. I suggest the next time negative ' juju' creeps into your brain regarding an LCA event, IGNORE IT! And go to the event. I promise you’ll learn something and benefit tremendously.” LCA is working hard to make sure our member companies and our industry continue to grow and thrive. Remember: “YOU ONLY GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN. DON’T EXPECT MORE UNTIL YOU DO MORE.” This statement may sound like tough love...and it is. We are all busy professionals with schedules dictated by weather, clients, family, and chance; it is all too easy to say you are too busy, but when we take the time to learn and meet others in our industry, we will almost always come out ahead. Freeman Maple— Flaunting Fall Colors

By Scott Brinitzer, Scott Brinitzer Design Associates Acer x fremanii, or Freeman maple, is likely familiar to most in the landscape and green industry, as it has become one of the only trees in our area that can reliably deliver “New England” style fall color. Freeman maples in my neighborhood are just beginning to turn color as I write this column in late October. Perhaps due to the incredible amount of rain this summer, or some unknown factor, the trees seem to be showing their autumn colors later than usual this year. No matter when they turn, however, each year I anxiously await the fall show put on by a stand of these maples near my office. A. x fremanii is the result of a cross between red and silver maple (A. rubrum and A. saccharinum). The Free-
man maple and the cultivars that we can purchase today combine some of the best features of both parents. While it’s hard to believe that a silver maple would have any good characteristics, Oliver M. Freeman of the National Arboretum saw potential in the fast-growing nature of the silver maple and the red fall color and branching structure of the red maple as he made the first controlled cross between the trees in 1933. The Freeman maples that I have observed for the past 15 years have survived drought, cold, wind, and this year’s tremendous rainfall. Located around an apartment building, near the street, they have a tight, somewhat rectangular appearance, easily distinguished from other GROUNDWORK

widely planted maple cultivars, such as ‘October Glory’. Because of their relatively compact form, they have coexisted with overhead power lines that run parallel to the trees. I am not advocating planting this tree directly in the path of a power line but am simply observing that in a tight spot, this tree may be a good choice. The Freeman maple leaves turn a bright orange/yellow red every October. The color is so stunning that on a sunny day they seem to glow, casting their bright color onto all objects near them. It is also noteworthy that the leaves remain in full color on the tree for at least two weeks. Once the leaves are ready to fall, however, they tend to drop from the tree within a
Plant of the Month continued couple days, reducing the multiday or multiweek leaf drop that can send crews back to the same site multiple times to collect leaves. It goes without saying that this year has been a banner growth year for the trees. With so much rain since May, the trees continued to grow until early August and are now (after 15 years) approximately 25’ tall and 20’ wide. The trees have bark that I would consider more like a red maple than a silver maple. The bark is smooth and has a silver color with patches of darker gray. One of the cultivars that we use is the columnar ‘Armstrong’ maple. These trees do not seem to have the
same “wow” factor as some other cultivars, but they can successfully be used as tall, narrow screening plants. In my observations over the years, I have tended to see less consistency in form from tree to tree and have noted that in a row of Armstrong maples, some of the trees are more strongly columnar than others. The most popular cultivar, ‘Autumn Blaze’, has the best fall color of any of the Freeman maples. The tree is readily available at most nurseries and is planted throughout our region. The Freeman maple is definitely a tree worthy of any larger landscape.

Decade Awards McFall and Berry Landscape Management
Avenel Community Association Commercial Maintenance Avenel is a wooded community in Potomac, Maryland. The community is filled with very large, mature trees, including some of the oldest and biggest tulip poplar trees in the area. The community is a unique combination of about 300 acres of common areas and about 900 residential properties. The detail and high expectations of onsite services make it a challenge, to say the least.

Eastern Shore Waterfront Estate Total Residential Contracting The landscape project for the Eastern Shore waterfront estate was completed in 2001. Our team of horticulturists, masons, and carpenters have made improvements and cared for the property for 17 years. The property features a naturalistic planting scheme, a waterfront gazebo, and a grand outdoor terrace featuring a raised stone waterfront spa. Our crews installed all plantings, stone walls, walks, and woodwork.

Severn River Residence Total Residential Contracting This woodland waterfront Annapolis home is nestled into a beautiful, secluded, and natural point overlooking the Severn River. We collaborated with the owner to create a natural woodland water garden that surrounds the home and flows in and out of the home. The garden is enhanced with bronze statuary of children playing, which reflects the values of the owner, who is a pediatric surgeon. Our crews built the water features, installed all the plantings, and set all the statuary.

Avenel is a community of fine homes and beautiful gardens. Our role as garden managers is to enhance the design build project our firm installed at this home several years prior. Weekly duties include plant health care, perennial detailing, watering, prepping for weekend gatherings, and ensuring there is always something colorful during the summer months.
Grand Awards Live Green Landscape Associates The Avenue at White Marsh Commercial Landscape Installation
The objective of this project was to transform part of the Avenue at White Marsh into a public park-like environment with dual-purpose features. Through the use of structural soils, soil mixes, irrigation, pavers, synthetic turf matting, and large caliper trees, we were able to construct a family-friendly, multipurpose gathering space. This area was updated and enhanced to become a multifunctional space for families to spend time together outdoors, and the plaza we created is accessible and engaging for all ages.

Sagamore Pendry Hotel Commercial Landscape Installation The Sagamore Pendry Hotel in historic Fells Point, Maryland, is housed on what was a commercial pier that was originally built in 1914. The project was designed as a focal point in a revitalization effort intended to attract high-end visitors to a historically significant area of the city. Under general contractor Whiting-Turner, our job scope included installing 18,000 square feet of concrete sub-slab, 15,000 square feet of granite cobbles and natural stone pavers, 400 tons of gravel, 20 tons of beach pebbles, 6,500 square feet of Ipe decking, 500 linear feet of slot/trench drains, nearly 6,000 ground cover plantings, 500 annuals, 500 shrubs, a 2,800-square-foot greenscreen, and nearly 50 trees.

MGM National Harbor Commercial Landscape Installation MGM National Harbor, a 23-acre, $1.5 billion mixed-use resort, is the newest addition to the National Harbor development situated along the Potomac Riverfront. The site reflects the quality and sophistication of other iconic MGM hotels while respecting the geography and history of the area. Our scope included the accurate fine grading of 10 acres; laser grading of a half acre; installation of 17,000 cubic yards of scientifically engineered soil, 1 acre of soil fabric, 500 tons of drainage stone, 2.5 acres of sod, 500 trees, 7,000 bulbs, 10,000 shrubs, 58,000 perennials, grasses, and groundcover; and addition of an irrigation system that included 10,000 feet of mainline, 35,000 feet of lateral lines, and nearly 20 miles of drip irrigation.

Hanover Buckhead Village Commercial Landscape Installation Hanover Buckhead village is located in the center of one of the choicest neighborhoods in Atlanta. The project involved installing 9,000 square feet of concrete flatwork, 3,000 square feet of concrete pavers, 12,000 square feet of sub slab, 23,000 square feet of Italian porcelain tile, 800 linear feet of granite curb, 10 tons of lightweight aggregate, 500 cubic yards of lightweight soil, 5,000 square feet of Ipe wood cladding, and 375 square feet of synthetic turf; adding an irrigation system; and installing site furnishings ranging from eight planters to grills and a double-sided fireplace, 1,500 shrubs, 1,500 perennials, and more than 75 trees. The materials for 80 percent of this project were installed on a 6th floor amenity deck.

One, Two, and Three Logan Square Commercial Maintenance One, Two, and Three Logan Square are a collection of high-rise office towers located in the heart of Philadelphia’s Central Business District. Ultimately, the client wanted to mirror the high-class, full-service feeling that tenants experience inside the buildings in the surrounding urban landscape. The weekly service includes maintenance of the walkways, beds, trees, pots, building entrances, and common grounds, as well as irrigation management and several significant enhancements.
Colao & Peter Outdoor Environments McLean – Modern Craftsmanship
We were hired as the landscape contractor for this modern and technically complicated project in McLean, Virginia. The overall project consisted of a negative-edge pool, full tile spa with multiple weir walls, an aqua rain system, four fire features, and a complete kitchen incorporated within the pool pavilion. The pool has a swim jet and bubblers, and the entire project has color-changing LED lights to create a dramatic entertainment area. The project also incorporated custom imported limestone from Israel, which we finished in different textures to add further interest to the project.

Our clients wanted to expand their outdoor environment by adding a tennis court and tennis pavilion. They wanted an area that could function as a place to rest or watch ongoing matches, or just another destination to enjoy on their property.

Grand Awards Michael Nash Design & Build Price Residence Craftsmanship
This family of four recently had a pool built in the backyard of their estate home in Clifton, Virginia. The family wanted to have a bathhouse/changing area to connect the outside Jacuzzi and pool deck, as well as a screened porch. Clearing the east side of the lot and excavating to the lower level to create the bathhouse area was a big challenge. We dug a 25' x 35' space four feet lower than pool deck, creating a walkway and stone staircase to a flagstone bathhouse patio. Overlooking all of this, we built a four-season screened porch/dining space, covered with a stone-like porcelain tile and incorporating a beaded panel cathedral ceiling and both recessed and hanging lights.

The existing front entry of this Vienna, Virginia, home was adequate yet too informal for our client. He asked us to renovate the entry and make it more formal and with eyecatching curb appeal. Our landscape, carpentry, and masonry crews built a new front entry featuring a flagstone arrival court, radially curved stone stairs, an arched portico, a stone curbed driveway, and lush plantings throughout the front yard.

Difficult Run Residence Front Residential Planting & Entranceway (Design/Build) This project involved a redesign of the front and side area landscape to include a new security fence with automated gate and pedestrian gate; new front plantings; new stone walls to complement the entry gate and accent the home throughout the landscape; a new asphalt driveway with concrete paver parking area; a new entry walkway from the driveway to the home; outdoor lighting; drainage and irrigation; and improved parking along the street.
Live Green Landscape Associates Pollokoff Residence Outdoor Living Area
This client began their project with the goal of designing and building their "forever home" on a lot that had an existing home due to be demolished. The outdoor living space of the new home would play a critical role in the functionality and appeal of the new property. Many of the home's details had already been decided by the time the landscape team was brought on board, but the backyard was an open canvas. The clients wanted room for guests both inside and outside the home. Wish list items included a water feature, an outdoor dining space, and a large area for entertaining with an outdoor fireplace. The builder salvaged several hundred square feet of bluestone from a patio at the original home, which the landscape contractor acid and pressure washed and mixed with new stone for the 2,000-square-foot patio.

The backyard and pool terrace of this Great Falls, Virginia, home was outdated, poorly constructed, and disconnected. Our team created a new outdoor pool terrace featuring a newly renovated pool, new and extended flagstone pool deck, an outdoor fireplace, a grill counter, and detailed brick inlays that showcase the craftsmanship of our masons. The existing pergola structure was rebuilt with synthetic material.

Lakefront Living Residence Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build) The client desired to improve the aesthetic and functionality of the waterfront space. We used Corten steel to construct retaining walls to bring the modern feel from the inside of the home to the outside. A retaining wall along the shoreline was installed to clean up the waterline and hold back the soil. The pea gravel area was created to allow the client to furnish this outdoor living space and a firepit. The retaining walls improved usable space. The overall intent of the project was to beautify the space. Clean lines and a simple plant palette create a big effect.

Falconhurst Residence Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build) This project involved removing an existing outdated swimming pool and installing something of a more contemporary nature for the homeowners. Additionally, we installed multiple travertine patio areas areas, stone walls, a spiral staircase, fencing, lawn steps, landscaping, drainage, and lighting throughout the rear space.

McLean Residence Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build) This landscape project began as a request for a swimming pool; however, after reviewing the property plot plan, we quickly realized that a pool was not feasible. A sewer easement ran directly through the backyard. After some diligent research, we decided on a custom stainless steel therapy spa for the water element. Along with the spa, our project element wish list included a firepit, outdoor dining space, and a usable backyard. Additionally, the client was an enthusiastic cook and wanted to explore Argentinian wood-fired cooking. The existing builder-grade deck needed to be upgraded to fit with the rest of the project. A walkway leads down from the dining patio to a central lounge space with a firepit. The lounge space then leads into the jewel of the project—a custom therapy spa.

Falls Church Oasis Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build) The owners of this project began interviewing a range of landscape architects and designers back in late 2015. While their list of programmatic requirements was short, their desire for a highly designed unique space to entertain was at the top of their list. Other requirements included a small pool and water feature, an architecturally interesting screened porch, a lounge space, at least one fire feature, screening of all neighboring homes, lush but low maintenance plantings, and multiple water features to screen sounds from neighboring properties. Given the density of surrounding homes, maintaining existing drainage patterns would be important. Small river stone channels were used throughout the design to provide a path for stormwater.

From inside the house standing at the front doorway, you can see an Allee of Hawthornes in the rear yard, in perfect alignment with the entranceway. The garden consists of thousands of perennials. In addition to weekly mowing of the lawn, our team of gardeners and horticulturists perform weekly garden management and IPM and turf care. Garden management includes the taxus hedging, pruning of boxwood and the Allee of Hawthornes, dead heading, and weeding. Additionally, we manage a pond on the property.

Grand Awards Fine Earth Landscape Inc. The White Flower Garden Total Residential Contracting
Whether it is the Natchez crapemyrtles, the Annabelle hydrangeas, or the Zumi calicarpa crabapples and pleasant white azaleas, it is just amazing that a garden can be so beautiful with just one flower color. Of course, we did not want to have just "bare branches" in the winter, so we planted hundreds of boxwoods. All of the construction elements were designed with crisp clean lines. The crushed stone driveway is lined with Belgian granite blocks. The flagstone terraces are all rectangular and symmetrical. The fountain is set in the center of a symmetrical flagstone patio. The dark-colored plaster and bluestone coping of the pool are softened by the cool lush turf that surrounds it. Several sitting areas in the front and back yards give the owners private places to enjoy their beautiful white garden.
Fine Earth Landscape Inc. Swett Residence Total Residential Contracting
This is a gardener's garden—tiered with essential stone retaining walls, creating vignettes throughout. The entire property consists of a series of steep hills, and the unusual narrow length breaks the garden into areas. There are four terraces and associated paths, steps, and plantings. The micro climates from dry to wet call for specific plant requirements. Over the last 15 years we have progressed via large and small increments together to call this a garden. We used plant material to mask the unsightly neighboring walls and recently built a lattice gate and screen to hide the mass of drain pipes hanging over the walls. There are many hidden drainage solutions throughout the garden.
McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Peninsula Point Total Residential Contracting
Peninsula Point is a unique property overlooking the Severn River. It is a low-lying tidal property occasionally inundated with brackish water. Our role as landscape contractor was to replace the existing pool and pool cabana with a new modern-style vanishing edge pool and pool house complete with kitchen and guest bedroom. Additionally, we built Ipe decks, pergolas, gates, and all the stonework in the landscape and on the house facade. We planted the entire property with wetland, native, and ornamental plantings.

The existing landscape was incomplete and installed by the builder who remodeled the home. Our role as landscape contractor was to install a new, functional, and colorful landscape throughout the entire property. Our scope of work included stone entry walls and walkways, new ornamental plantings, a swimming pool and waterwall, and a flagstone banded travertine patio.

This waterfront home was being completely remodeled inside and out. Our scope of work included all exterior decks, the front portico, stone patios, and plantings throughout the property. Grand Awards McHale Landscape Design, Inc. American Meadow Garden Total Residential Contracting
Our client, who is a landscape architect, contracted with us to install "her vision" for this beautiful, waterfront, Eastern Shore property. We installed trees, shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses throughout the property to reflect the style of "The American Meadow Garden." Our stone masons crafted beautiful hand-chiseled stone garden walls and a stone mosaic garden ornament. Additionally, we built stone pathways and walkways throughout the property. This collaborative effort between contractor and landscape architect is truly a success.

The clients required a total garden renovation due to the extensive construction and remodeling of their home and pool area. The clients enjoy the outdoors, and they have an active dog and two sons who play soccer and lacrosse. The outdoor living area also needed to accomodate the mom's love for gardens and entertaining. A peaceful pool and hot tub area was separated from the soccer/lacrosse lawn by the pool house and soft plantings.

Old Man Creek Residence Total Residential Contracting The client had purchased this property with plans to conduct a full renovation of the home and landscape. We were brought in handle everything on the property, with the exception of the house itself. The scope of work included the installation of multiple retaining walls, steps, patios, and walkways.
Shorb Landscaping, Inc. A Residence in Bethesda Total Residential Contracting
When the clients moved into this home, it had very bland, builder-grade landscaping. They wanted to create a more gracious entry and welcoming approach to the house but still retain the expansiveness of the lawn. While they had good screening in the rear, they needed additional evergreen screening along the left side of the front yard. In the backyard, they wanted to create a larger area for entertaining and relaxing with the family. Paving around the existing pool was in bad shape and needed to be completely replaced. To get respite from the sun, the project also included a generous pergola with a shade cloth. Numerous pots with colorful annuals add seasonal interest, and more robust plantings throughout were better suited to the scale of the house.

These elements included a new front walkway, landscaping, lighting, and drainage in the front yard area; new rear walkways; patios; an outdoor grill; a stone firepit with gas insert; a covered structure with stone columns and seatwall; rear landscaping; lighting; and drainage.

Foxhall Residence Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build) The project is a contemporary design which involved maximizing a small space in the D.C. area. The project elements included new front and rear landscaping to accent the home and environment; a new paver driveway for additional parking and turnaround space and trash can storage; new fencing to privatize the area; new patios and walkways consisting of Travertine and gravel; a new outdoor covered structure with Ipe TV wall and Ipe/stone firepit area and outdoor grill with leather countertop; a new Ipe/composite deck with built-in prefabricated spa and stainless steel cable rails; and outdoor lighting, drainage, irrigation.

Wessynton Residence Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build) This project was a three-phase project. The front yard project, phase one, was implemented to improve the curb appeal of the home and bring a more modern design to the landscape to echo the design of the home. We used flagstone to create the walkways. Shenandoah split-Carderock was used to create retaining walls, as well as special cubical boulders from Pennsylvania. Phase two was the side walkway, in which a bad deck was removed and replaced with improved access to the backyard, and the overgrown landscaping was simplified. Phase three involved improving access to the dock and improving the entertainment space leading out from the basement. The three phases occurred over the course of three years.

Bethesda Outdoor Living Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build) The objective of our design was to develop a connection to all of the spaces—proposed and existing. We created a unique walkway flanked by a fireplace and TV viewing area on one side and the outdoor dining space on the other. A custom cedar pergola was designed to frame the TV viewing space and provide shade. Artificial turf was installed to create an upper "lawn" area for sports and a place for the client's dogs to play. Green giant arborvitae line the property to form a backdrop and create privacy. Landscape lighting provides a wonderful ambience for entertaining.

The weekly service includes maintaining 21 acres of turf, 4 miles of walkways, three ponds, 2.5 acres of perennial/shrub beds, 750+ trees, pots, building entrances, roadways, and parking and common grounds, as well as performing integrated pest management and irrigation management. Construction traffic on site necessitates constant cleanup of dust/debris from roadways, walkways, turf, and beds. To address soil compaction issues, the contractor performs turf renovations every fall to include core aerating, top-dressing with compost, and reseeding with fescue.

The owners of this stunning contemporary home located in Alexandria, Virginia, on the Potomac brought us in to renovate their existing pool and outdoor living area and continue the modern vision created by them and their architect. Whitehall Creek Residence Outdoor Living Area This homeowner on Whitehall Creek in Annapolis was looking to convert an overgrown and unusable part of their property into a functional outdoor living space. The kitchen and bar area includes everything you would need to entertain in style. Appliances include a pizza oven, grill, refrigerator, ice maker, and sink! The bar is set in a way that you can look out to the creek and enjoy the beautiful sunsets. Once you are done with dinner, you can move over to the fireplace to relax. The angle of the fireplace was set in a way to take advantage of the beautiful structure from inside the home as well as the view of the creek from the patio.

Resort Style Living!!! Outdoor Living Area This homeowner was looking to create a resort-style pool and outdoor living space in their backyard. They have three young children and wanted to be able to enjoy it with them as well as entertain family and friends. The pool has a large sundeck, an expanded shallow end, and a deep end large enough to have multiple waterfalls, a dive rock, and 40-foot-long slide. Palm trees, grasses, and annual plantings bring this space to life, along with over 40 lights and Sonos speakers.

Red Barn Residence Outdoor Living Area (Design/Build) Initially, the client had big ideas for their backyard living environment. After a few design iterations, they decided to simplify the space. A breath of fresh air was given to the outdoor patio terrace by expanding the usable entertainment area and incorporating a built-in grill station and comfortable dining area. Both the pea gravel walkway on the right side of the home and the pea gravel dining area utilize the same pea gravel and design elements as the driveway of the home. All of the new retaining walls match the stone of the home.
Planted Earth Landscaping, Inc. Northwest Washington DC Residence Total Residential Contracting
This was a two-phase project in Northwest D.C. consisting of the front yard initially and the rear yard in the second year. Phase one consisted of grading the yard and installing drainage, plantings, deer fencing, irrigation, and night lighting. We also managed the hardscape installation of a stone-veneered concrete block screen wall with custom mahogany archway garden door and a wet-laid bluestone front walkway and patio. Phase two consisted of a new pool, a pool house renovation, and hardscape flat work in the rear yard, performed by others. Our scope involved grading, drainage, irrigation, lighting, and planting, including an immediate screening hedge approximately 200 feet long consisting of hollies and cryptomeria.

Community residents host many gatherings and events throughout the year, so the appearance of the landscape is important.

For this magnificent home in Great Falls, Virginia, we were contracted to do a full site renovation, including creating a prominent entry that was in line with the scale and style of the house. The client wanted a French country aesthetic, using similar materials and styles as you would see in that part of the world.

Clifton Residence Total Residential Contracting (Design/Build) This project began in the rear yard and transitioned to the front. We created a formal landing with natural elements to connect the two spaces. After the rear yard was completed, it was time to update the front yard with a dramatic front entry. The existing hillside presented an opportunity for a more formal entry. Working with the existing grades, we were able to alter the terrain to allow for a grand staircase, inviting guests directly to the front of the home. This design created an opportunity for meandering dry stack walls with beautiful plantings to soften the hillside.
