PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Celebrating Our Accomplishments and Looking Ahead to 2022 Happy fa ll! I hope everyone has had a safe and successful year. I know it has been challenging as we continue to manage pandemic guidelines and adapt to do what is best for our families and businesses. I maintain a positive outlook and have an optimistic view for 2022, with a continued return to in-person events and great opportunities! Paul Jester, PLA, ASLA 2021 President
One of our favorite in-person events, the LCA Annual Networking Dinner and Awards Celebration, was able to return last month. While we missed out last year, I was excited to see everyone and was honored to welcome you all back. Our newly formed Program Committee had some fresh ideas, and I think the celebration was a great success. Even as a member of the LCA and a landscape architect within the industry, I am constantly impressed and amazed with our members’ work, which we will continue to highlight throughout the upcoming year. The Annual Networking Dinner and Awards Celebration is a great opportunity to speak with our peers and see what is being accomplished. I am sure the friendly competition among ourselves will continue to push us toward excellence in all aspects of our profession! At the awards, we were thrilled to have Kevin McHale, of McHale Landscape Design, say a few words about the past year and the landscape
industry. One thing he mentioned is the continued overuse of one particular phrase: “In these unprecedented times.” While I am sure we have all said it ourselves, I agree with Kevin that it is time to minimize our use of this phrase. We have all been living through the COVID-19 pandemic, and the times are no longer unprecedented. We all know how to be safe in our practices and believe it is time to embrace a positive mentality, find our grit, and keep moving forward to achieve our goals, personally and professionally. The LCA board has embraced this mentality, and we are eager to move forward from “these unprecedented times” and are excited to continue offering educational networking opportunities. The board and our Program Committee are continuously brainstorming new ideas and would love to hear from you, so please do not hesitate to reach out. To conclude the awards, LCA took the time to honor and remember Landon Reeve, of Chapel Valley Landscape Company. Landon passed away in May 2020, and we have been anxious to honor him and his place within the industry and association. LCA was able to bring in guest speakers, including his daughter, Deonne Wollman, to speak about who he was, what he achieved, and his impact on the industry and what we do today. In honoring him, LCA announced that it will be establishing a new annual award, the J. Landon Reeve IV Award, which recognizes the
member who has consistently demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, quality, and customer care in the landscape industry in the MD/DC/VA region. We felt it was only appropriate to present this inaugural award to Landon and his family and look forward to recognizing our other amazing members in the future. I’m sorry I never had the opportunity to meet Landon, but it was clear how important he was to our industry and its members. As we look forward to a new year, I urge each of you to continue being involved with LCA. We strive to be a valuable resource for bettering your business practices, improving skills, and networking with colleagues. It is an investment that is sure to pay off! On behalf of LCA, I want to extend our congratulations to each of the 2021 award winners and offer a special thank you to the Reeve family for attending and being a part of our community. I would also like to thank our board members for their continued positive attitude through tough times and Management Solutions Plus, which helped to manage LCA and make all of our events possible. A Taste of the Tropics in Winter By Scott Brinitzer, Scott Brinitzer Design Associates
Winter is a difficult time of year for me. I love light, sun, flip flops, digging in the soil, swimming, and sitting on my front porch reading and relaxing. Although our winters in the DC area aren’t as long, cold, or depressing as many other areas of our country, they can be hard to endure, especially during January and February, when the holidays have passed and spring still seems so far away. Because I prefer the warmer months, I have worked to create a garden at my house that includes as many everg reens as possible. I have experimented with the usual suspects—camellias (some work, most don’t), bamboo (love it, just battle it constantly), nandina, skip laurel, chindo viburnum, and yews—all in an attempt to lift my spirits by surrounding myself with green foliage. One plant I discovered several years ago, and one that is not that widely known by many people outside of
the landscape community, is Rohdea japonica, or sacred lily. Rohdea is a native of China, Japan, and Korea. It is a medium-sized evergreen ground cover, growing to about 12” tall. It remains completely evergreen, withstanding snow, ice, hard freezes, and heat. The thick evergreen leaves hide a small flower that appears in late spring, giving way to orange-red berries in fall. New growth emerges from the center, slowly expanding the width of plant.
As I have grown Rohdea for many years, I’ll offer you some advice concerning the use and growth habit of this plant that I love. My advice is based upon my experience with this plant at my home and at a garden I created in Lewes, Delaware. Your specific soils and microclimate may impact how this plant performs for you in your garden.
When I first saw Rohdea, I thought it was a tropical plant that someone had placed in a shade perennial garden because the flower looked very much like the common houseplant Spathiphyllum, or peace lily. The leaves—thin evergreen blades standing tall and straight, bunched from the center, emanating from a single stem—looked different, however, not at all like the wide, glossy peace lily foliage.

Plant of the Month continued First, you must be aware that the plant grows very slowly. The soil at my house is largely clay; it dries out in summer, even with irrigation; and can become somewhat but not totally saturated at times. Rohdea cannot survive in wet conditions. It does not like full sun, and if it receives full sun at any time during the day, the leaves will bleach to some degree, turning the normally dark green leaves somewhat white. Rohdea is best integrated into a garden as a small grouping surrounded by lower growing shade perennials. I have used Rohdea in groups or clumps that unite different sections of my shade garden. Your eye will be drawn to this plant, as it truly looks to be a tropical foliage plant, unlike any other shade perennial. Rohdea will self-seed. It just takes an eternity for the plants to grow to a size where they are noticeable in the garden. Usually I see one leaf, one small stalk rising from the soil. It takes about three years for it to become something that you would consider an actual perennial. Once
I see a new baby Rhodea emerging, I carefully move it into position, joining its parents, enlarging the plant grouping. In my garden in Delaware, my experience with Rhodea was similar, except that the plant grew faster. Soils in Lewes are amazing: a clay-based soil with a good amount of sand, creating that ever sought after nutritious but “well-drained” soil. In Delaware, the plant also required complete shade; it looked great mixed with camellias, under loblolly pines, in a bed of pine needles. But, as I said, the plant grew much faster, covering an area of several feet in half the time it took my guys to cover a small section of my garden at home. Rohdea is a great plant for those who have patience but who truly enjoy unique texture and winter color in their garden. It isn’t meant to be a single ground cover, but it can augment your winter garden. It’s also a great conversation starter for those not familiar with this standout winter perennial.

The landscape was installed in 2014 and has been maintained by us ever since. The property is professionally manicured on a biweekly basis throughout the growing season, including bed care/weeding, pruning, and property cleanup to remove debris. On opposing weeks, the property is thoroughly inspected by the maintenance manager. The turf is trimmed and edged on a weekly basis and fertilized twice a year after soil sample analysis. Weeds in turf are treated monthly, and all turf area is core aerated and overseeded every fall. Plant healthcare technicians visit the property monthly to inspect and treat plant material. Decade Awards McHale Landscape Design, Inc. A Spring Hill Residence Total Residential Contracting Our client asked us to landscape their entire property in Great Falls, Virginia, so that it would complement the beautiful Tudor-style home. The scope of work included terracing the front yard hillside with stone walls and steps, constructing a detailed brick paver arrival court and a raised stone curb driveway, and installing colorful ornamental plantings. The backyard featured a loggia, outdoor kitchen, outdoor fireplace, full-size swimming pool, a water feature, and large evergreen privacy plantings surrounded by colorful ornamental plantings. This property is a truly luxurious and eye-catching home with dramatic curb appeal.
McHale Landscape Design, Inc. A Bethesda Property Total Residential Contracting This elegant European-style home in Bethesda is nestled under the canopy of mature oak and poplar trees. Our crews installed the project in 2004, and our maintenance crews have managed the property ever since. The property includes finely crafted granite and stone paving spaces, lush lawn areas, a colorful pallet of flowering shrubs and annuals, and meticulously cared for evergreen hedges. The entire property was landscaped— from the impressive and welcoming entry to the backyard pool house and terrace. Grand Awards McHale Landscape Design, Inc. A Centreville Residence Craftsmanship Despite their location in the Northern Virginia suburbs, the homeowners envisioned an all-season outdoor living space that would feel like a lodge at one of their favorite vacation destinations—Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We constructed a heavy timber and beam structure that consisted of solid cedar, rough sawn lumber that is not only luxurious but clearly showcases the craftsmanship of our masons and carpenters. The pavilion structure and connecting arbor are enhanced with exposed rafters, precision stonework, outdoor kitchen, fireplace, ceiling heaters, and all of the amenities of a vacation lodge.
Lehnhoff’s Landscaping Phoenix Residence Craftsmanship (Design/Build) The customer wanted the focus of the backyard space to be a natural stone fireplace. We decided to design and build a one-of-a-kind natural stone fireplace using locally sourced stone. The stone fireplace is accented with natural stone arches/keystones and has bluestone buildups for the mantle and chimney details. The patio was created using natural cleft slabs and infilled with a blue mazus ground cover to create a natural appeal while still maintaining adequate drainage. All stone was fabricated and hand chiseled to create the fireplace.
Colao & Peter Elegant Entryway Front Residential Planting and Entranceway A high-profile client that was concerned about security and privacy engaged us to design a front entry that matched the existing architecture of the home. Along with privacy, the client asked us to add charm and visual appeal to the front of the home. The classic, lush entryway signifies a first impression that sets a luxurious tone when entering the property. This project incorporates custom automatic gates with layers of landscaping to create a private oasis. Burfod holly trees, magnolias, boxwoods, and hydrangeas create additional screening behind the masonry wall and wrought iron fencing while keeping the classic, timeless feel of the home.
McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Great Falls Property Front Residential Planting and Entranceway We were called in to renovate the entire front yard of this 25-year-old home. Overgrown shrubs and too many trees were overwhelming the property and obstructing any views. Our scope of work entailed massive cleanup and removal of existing plant material; construction of a new arrival court, a brick wing wall, and a pier to set off the parking area while creating a screen for the garbage and recycling bins; renovation of the front steps; addition of of a pre-cast border around a lawn panel; and installation of new plantings throughout.
Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Geros Residence Outdoor Living Area
The clients contacted our design team to develop an outdoor living area in their backyard that would incorporate the existing pool house. A spa was placed on the pool’s far end with a cedar pergola and seating area centered behind it. Other design features include an outdoor kitchen, a gas fire pit, a rain garden, and architectural stone retaining walls. Gorgeous curved limestone and natural stone steps were constructed to traverse grade from the lower patio and fire pit to the pool deck. Lush plantings, screen trees, and perenneal gardens create privacy. The final addition of outdoor lighting casts night beauty to a spectacular garden oasis.

Grand Awards Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Glazer Residence Outdoor Living Area Our client requested an outdoor living space with a swimming pool and seating spaces. Due to grade changes, a raised swimming pool and terrace were designed. Natural stone was used to face all elevated walls and step risers. Flagstone was selected for walkways, terrace surface, and pool deck. As requested by the homeowner, a curved edge at the pool deck allowed for the crape myrtle allée with a hedge of plum yew. The garden is full of boxwood, roses, hydrangea, liriope, seasonal color, and planters. Large evergreens provide the privacy that this intimate garden deserves. An entry walkway from driveway provides egress through lush plantings leading to this private outdoor entertainment space.
Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. Landy Residence Outdoor Living Area The homeowners contacted us to develop an outdoor living space, requesting a pool, spa, and outdoor kitchen with bar. The outdoor kitchen was designed at the corner of the existing patio and covered with a solar-powered pergola/roof system. Natural stone was used to tie material to existing retaining walls and the backyard. Silver travertine makes up the pool decking and walkway to the spa. Existing stucco walls became planters for new planting gardens. A large stucco retaining wall on the right near the pool house was removed and rebuilt to make the cabinet space needed for the pool equipment. A fire feature was added for enjoying family and friends in the evenings.
Fine Earth Landscape, Inc. A Shady Retreat Outdoor Living Area The owners asked for a complete outdoor living area that would include a swimming pool with an attached spa, pool house, and fireplaces, as well as beautiful and extensive plantings. The owner wanted to retain the existing mature forest. The major challenge was dealing with the elevations and drainage. Our design minimized the use of retaining walls by incorporating slopes, a turf swale, and catch basins. The pool was designed with an elevated spa with a water spillover. We did all the exterior stonework on the pool house and constructed the fireplace and chimney. The pool decking and the patios are all travertine. Hundreds of perennial plantings bring the area to life through the summer swim season.
McHale Landscape Design, Inc. An Alexandria Residence Outdoor Living Area Our team was asked to create a functional and intimate porcelain tile terrace in the enclosed courtyard between the garage/apartment and house of this Old Town Alexandria townhome. Access was through a standard-size staircase leading to the apartment atop of the garage. Most materials were hand-carried in 5-gallon buckets with occasional larger items needing to come through the home. The concrete for the slab was pumped through the neighbor’s fence. This beautiful urban outdoor living space features a slate gray porcelain tile patio, a ceramic fire table, a composite grill cabinet and countertop, a Festoon lighting display, colorful plantings, and potted ornamentals.
McHale Landscape Design, Inc. A Kensington Residence Outdoor Living Area
This client contacted us to design a multi-use outdoor living space. The entire allowance for impervious ground had been spent by the builder on this tear-down/new build. With only the footprint of a patio the builder had provided, we were able to do everything on the homeowner’s wish list. Raising the grade to the level of the first floor eliminated wasted space. Using the garage wall as the backdrop of the water feature allowed some of the plumbing to be located inside the garage and freed up space. A heavy-beamed pergola and eyebrow arbor help bring the exterior style closer to the client’s preferred aesthetic. Whether grilling, exercising, relaxing, or entertaining, this outdoor space exceeded all of the client’s expectations.

Grand Awards McHale Landscape Design, Inc. McLean Property Outdoor Living Area While an extensive renovation of the home was well underway, we were asked to join the team and create a luxurious and elegant outdoor living space to complement the modern design. The client requested the style should be simple, sleek, modern, and functional. Our scope of work included a water feature, vanishing edge pool, spa, outdoor fireplace, stone and brick walls, and several silver travertine entertainment spaces. The property was planted with a variety of evergreens, vines, flowering shrubs, and perennials. The new outdoor living space truly enhances the modern architecture of the home.
Colao & Peter Palisades Oasis Outdoor Living Area/Design Build This modern project located near the Potomac River in the Palisades area of Washington, D.C. includes a pool, a waterproofed deck with cable railing, a patio space for entertaining, and a large synthetic turf play area for the family’s children. This client wanted to give their kids their own haven with lots of activities while at the same time having an elegant entertaining space to enjoy with family and friends. Our directives were to fuse an elegant design that the kids could fully enjoy.
JCLD | Jennifer Connoley Landscape Design Country Waterfront Estate Outdoor Living Area/Design Build This 5,365-square-foot entertaining area on the Eastern Shore included the demolition/ renovation of an existing pool and pool house; extensive grading; and the installation of a new patio, wood deck, drainage infrastructure, sod, and landscaping. The front porch adjoins the side deck and includes steps leading to the path and pool patio. A much larger ivory travertine pool patio was installed in a classic herringbone pattern with formal curves. Many existing trees were preserved and worked into the landscape plan. A blend of traditional landscape and native plants provide colorful appeal. The property is a peninsula, and the plantings were designed to define the space while emphasizing key water views and surrounding vistas.

The renovation involved installation of all new hardscape features to include all walls, patios, steps, guest parking area and pool and spa copings; new open air deck/porch with outdoor fireplace, grill with bar, lighting, and outdoor audio; contemporary pool cabana with outdoor lighting, audio, and TV; all new landscaping; new fencing and outdoor playset with rubber mulch; all masonry around the pool and deck areas; and a new deck with covered space and grilling.

River View Property Total Residential Contracting This incredible 16.5-acre estate was being renovated, including reproduction of a English colonial boxwood and rose gardens inspired by old blueprints found on the property. Our scope of work began with cleaning and restoring the property. Drainage was a critical element, as the property was now required to fulfill current regulations. Our work included the driveway renovations with granite cobble borders, aprons, and parking areas; a new stone fireplace and chimney, masonry walks, and steppingstone paths; boulder outcrops and retaining walls; enhancements to the dock and carriage house; restoration of the formal parterre garden plantings; and development of a parklike setting for the wooded areas of the property.
McHale Landscape Design, Inc. St. Michael’s Residence Total Residential Contracting This is the first of three houses for which we have overseen the landscape design development and construction. This is also the third pool that we have designed and built for this client. The project began by creating an inviting entrance to the front door. The Ipe boardwalk leads to the vase fountain that is lined on an axis with the walk. The entry consists of a geo grid, turf-covered driveway, which reduces impervious materials and allows for a simple design. In phase 2, we nestled the pool far enough from the water to meet the 100-foot setback requirement and used Ipe decking to allow us to meet impervious coverage requirements. Summer blooming perennials, shrubs, and trees were seamlessly blended with the existing plants to strengthen the garden’s maturity.
Planted Earth Landscaping, Inc. Alexandria West Residence Total Residential Contracting Aptly named the Sevareid House after its former owner, this midcentury modern home in Alexandria, Virginia, hosts performances of both world-class musicians and developing local talent alike. The goal was to merge an adjacent forest with native shade-tolerant plantings into a picturesque vista that fit the homes architecture. Massive retaining walls needed to be constructed by the general contractor to provide a level surface for entertaining. Multiple outdoor living areas allowed for both a pool and firepit, a rill adorned with water-tolerant plantings, and a courtyard off the kitchen to showcase the clients sculpture.

Bethesda Modern Residence Total Residential Contracting This modern home was built with curved architecture, with the hardscape structures, grading, and planting beds mimicking this patterned radial throughout the entire property. The arborvitae perimeter hedge screens out the community as the homeowners rest in their hammock or dine by the fountain. An enormous, unique piece of driftwood became the sculptural focal point of the garden and was repeated throughout the gardens. With minimal lawn and an abundance of perennials and flowering shrubs, this property transformed into a colorful haven to pollinators and guests alike.

Additionally, we maintain the pool terrace drainage grates and assist in the pool house maintenance for special events. Prior to the maintenance provided by our company, the property had been installed and maintained by others for more than five years. Maintenance began with the removal of excess mulch, cleaning up the beds, and getting irrigation under control all within the first year. Mending of the 8-acre-encompassed deer fencing also began at this time. Annual color rotations have added seasonal interest to beds and planters. Ruppert Landscape EXO Apartments Commercial Landscape Installation
EXO Apartments in Reston, Virginia, is a 16-story residential development that includes 457 apartments and 646 parking spaces. The project is organized into two towers atop a landscaped parking plinth and is linked by a single-story building that houses reception and other management functions. The amenity deck between the two towers contains outdoor seating and dining areas, a large swimming pool, and vibrant landscaping. The building facades are modularized, designed to leverage efficiencies in fabrication and construction, while scattered balconies punctuate the elevation.

Grand Awards Ruppert Landscape A Naturalized Inter-Campus Connector in Ft. Worth Commercial Landscape Installation (Design/Build) This project is a 258-acre corporate campus located in Fort Worth. The new campus joins an existing set of buildings and brings together nearly 12,000 people. The customer wanted to unify its employees and create more collaborative, nimble teams. Our piece of that—known as The Mobility Project—was an 8.3-mile path designed to connect people throughout the campus with unique spaces along the way. Work pods, shade structures, and seating areas were added along these paths, and the landscape installation in and around these paths aesthetically unified the project. Additional focus centered around preserving the overall ecology and environmental sustainability of the site, which sits in the Blackland Prairie region of North Texas.
Ruppert Landscape Arboretum Commercial Maintenance Located within one of the most sought-after business locations in Chesterfield County, Virginia, the Arboretum is a Class A commercial office park offering commanding lake views and excellent amenities. Minutes from Richmond International Airport and downtown Richmond, the 65-acre office park is home to 100+ tenant companies and welcomes numerous weekly visitors. The weekly service includes maintaining 6.7 acres of turf, 2 miles of walkways, 3 acres of perennial and shrub beds, hundreds of trees, pots, building entrances, roadways, parking, and common grounds, as well as irrigation management.

Ruppert Landscape Washington Harbour Commercial Maintenance Washington Harbour is a Class A mixed-use development located in Northwest Washington, The complex contains luxury condominiums, offices, retail space, restaurants, and underground parking. Washington Harbour is a member of the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID), a publicly chartered private nonprofit organization established in 1999 by property owners and merchants to protect and enhance the accessibility, attractiveness, and appeal of Georgetown’s commercial district. The BID runs a variety of programs to make Georgetown cleaner, safer, and more vibrant, including an extensive flower program featuring the flower baskets along Georgetown Waterfront Park.
Live Green Landscape Associates Morgan State Ecological Plantings
We were contracted based on a set of landscape drawings to fulfill the design and intent of the architect. With this being the fifth consecutive project completed for Morgan State, our company has a history of quality work and satisfaction with this client. The total number of plants used for this project included approximately 100 trees, 700 shrubs, and nearly 17,000 perennials and grasses. In addition, approximately 2,200 cubic yards of soil were brought in for planting.

Distinction Awards Live Green Landscape Associates Carnaggio Craftsmanship
The client’s primary goals were to secure the house, foundation, and shoreline of his newly purchased vacation home on the Chesapeake Bay and to create an environmentally friendly section of shoreline to help spark the interest of his neighbors to continue this effort. The old retaining wall was not properly working and dirt was spilling over the top of the wall, allowing sediment and contaminants to make their way into the Chesapeake Bay. The project consisted of six individual walls totalling 3,570 square feet. Both sides of the walls, separated by a flight of stairs, had to be the exact same height. This was a challenge since we were building them separately and at different times.

Sanctuary in Triangle Craftsmanship (Design/Build) Vibrant, lush landscaping with a flowing stream surrounded by natural stone boulders immediately catch your eye on this project, while the deck, outdoor kitchen, resort-style patio, and fire pit are the main components. The goal of this project was to add visual interest and appeal to the back of the home that fit in with the style. A new deck with an outdoor kitchen was built, with steps leading down to a separate patio space. To add more appealing textures and materials, we included a natural stone veneer wall and a finished wood ceiling. Connected to the patio, natural boulder stepping stones lead to a separate fit pit area. The full landscaping and water feature make the space serene and peaceful yet perfect for entertaining friends and family.
Live Green Landscape Associates Bastinelli Residence Front Residential Planting and Entranceway
For this project, the client came to us with the idea of a grand entry with curb appeal. As they granted us free reign with the design, we took inspiration from his colonialstyle house. Staying with this style, we designed the entry and steps to reflect the large house’s traditional, formal style. Clean lines of brick, bluestone, and cobblestone were used to achieve this look. The project entailed an open area leading into a flight of stairs down to an entryway to the front door of the house. In addition, the project included drainage, planting, and lighting.
Lehnhoff’s Landscaping Hydes Residence Outdoor Living Area
The client wanted to upgrade the side yard of the house from a vegetable garden to an entertainment space. The home is a historic home, so creating modern comfort while still maintaining a natural and rustic aesthetic was critical. We built a local natural stone fireplace with “Old Deutsch” brick accents. We incorporated subtle lighting in the stonework and surrounding the patio. The patio was constructed using thermal fullcolor bluestone and ties into a new front walkway, also installed by our company. This outdoor living space has become the perfect spot for relaxation; our client says they used the space during the pandemic to transition from “martini time” to “quarantini time.”

The existing pool and outdoor entertainment space were 30 years old and in dire need of renovation. The client asked that we bring their backyard into “the 21st century.” Our scope of work included demolishing the oversized and dated pool and replacing it with a new pool, spa, and pebble water wall. Additionally, we constructed a new outdoor seating area with a grill station, TV, and heavy beamed pergola. The property was landscaped with a variety of ornamental plantings and highlighted with potted seasonal color. The transformation is remarkable, and the client is proud to welcome guests to his new outdoor living oasis.

Distinction Awards Kane Landscapes, Inc. Long Residence Outdoor Living Area/Design Build
The clients realized their four girls were growing up quickly, and with the father’s constant international travel, they wanted to ensure time at home was time spent together having fun. We were hired to design and build a backyard pool environment that would entertain a wide age range of children while fitting everything into a small footprint. As you enter the rear yard, you are greeted with the sounds of rushing water from the large slide, waterfall, and spa spillway. Stadium seating allows room for guests while entertaining. Lush plantings surround the pool, and a steep wooded hill acts as the backdrop for this secluded pool area.
Kane Landscapes, Inc. Schmidt Residence Outdoor Living Area/Design Build
The client was in the beginning phases of having their dream home constructed when our company was hired to ensure that the landscape was properly planned and complemented the home. The goal was to have extensive gardens that enabled them to feel like they were in the English countryside. While no pool was required, larger water features that could bring sound and movement to the landscape were requested. We were responsible for all work outside the home, including construction of walls, walkways, and patios; grading; plantings; sod installation; lighting; irrigation; driveway placement; and oversight. Extensive grading work was required, but in the end, the clients have the retirement home and garden of their dreams.

Contemporary Oasis Outdoor Living Area/Design Build The client wanted to turn their outdated backyard deck space into a multi-use outdoor living area. We designed the patios to give them multiple spaces, with the bar area separate from the kitchen and dining area and the fire pit patio on a lower level. We renovated the inaccessible deck into a screened-in porch on the upper level and added steps for much-needed access. The client wanted a more modern look, so we used Techo bloc for the walls and pavers. The fire pit was built to match the walls and patios.

Johnson Residence Outdoor Living Area/Design Build Our client came to us with a vision of having a new backyard where they could entertain and relax. We wanted to create a space where these two desires could blend seamlessly. This project consisted of creating a grand screened porch with trim accents, a custom spiral staircase, new patio and barbeque area, custom pergola, entry gate with stone columns, renovated fireplace, fresh plantings, wildflower garden, drainage solutions, irrigation, grading, tree removal, and landscape lighting.

Our design team developed a comprehensive landscape design. The driveway was developed to look like a gravel driveway but was bonded together with Gravel-LocTM for a solid surface to play basketball. The pool is located off the porch, complete with a pool deck of random rectangular flagstone. The raised bond beam wall provides the structure necessary to install five spillways viewable from all back windows. Steps of flagstone lead down from the pool deck to the left side of the home, where a segmental block retaining wall was constructed to retain the pool and pool deck. The lushly planted garden is filled with multitudes of colors, textures, screenings, and perennials to create beauty in this garden during all four seasons.

Distinction Awards McHale Landscape Design, Inc. An Arlington Residence Total Residential Contracting
It’s very unusual to see a log cabin home at a busy intersection in Arlington, Virginia. Our client purchased this unique property so that he could renovate and modernize the log cabin and create a new landscape that would complement the refurbished architecture. Our scope of work included a new permeable paver driveway, a stucco garden, retaining walls, a Bluestone entry, a custom ceramic fountain, and lush colorful and privacy plantings throughout the property.

The landscape of this palatial home in McLean, Virginia, was overgrown, unkept, and poorly maintained. The client asked us for a “landscape overhaul” for the entire property. Our scope of work included removing all overgrown plantings, successfully transplanting a 25-foot-tall southern magnolia, and adding a new front entry and a fountain with lush, colorful plantings. The backyard scope of work focused on enhancing the existing pool and cabana. New boxwood hedges and flowering ornamentals now define and enhance the space, while a checkerboard stone patio highlights the upper terrace.

We were tasked with developing the entire property, including turning the rear yard into a multifaceted outdoor living space perfect for the client’s busy entertaining schedule. Our scope of work included a new front entry, new walkway and foundation plantings, plunge pool-spa, full-size swimming pool, pizza oven, outdoor fireplace, outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen with tandoor oven, flagstone patios, and lush colorful plantings throughout. An easement for the neighbor’s driveway splits the backyard into two separate areas. The left side of the easement is a destination outdoor space featuring a full-size swimming pool and a pre-fabricated pool house that our in-house carpenters elevated with architectural details and finishes.
Garden Gate Landscaping A Garden in Northwest Washington, DC Total Residential Contracting/Design Build
This beautiful home in Northwest DC boasts a welcoming front entryway and serene rear garden. The project consisted of exterior renovations surrounding the entirety of the home, including the design and installation of stone walls, walks, and patio; iron railings and fencing; landscape lighting; a water feature in the rear garden; and thoughtfully chosen landscaping throughout the property. The garden was intended to be enjoyed equally from outside and inside the home, and thus, all selections were made with the homeowner’s aesthetic in mind.

The front portion of the project included a new front bluestone walkway accented with brick, a brick knee wall, architectural accent walls, grading, landscaping, and sod. What was once a delightful Asian-style garden had become overrun by weeds and bamboo. The new homeowners recently completed a painstakingly detailed renovation of the exterior, breathing new life into the Craftsman bungalow-style architecture. We enthusiastically shared some inspiring concepts and were awarded the task of reclaiming their property! Our scope of work included designing and installing driveway enhancements, stone retaining walls, entrance walks, fencing, deck, patios, a water feature, a hot tub, lighting, and colorful plantings throughout. The end result is a remarkable transformation that captures the storybook cottage style in the front along with a bit of Asian Zen in the back.

Remembering J. Landon Reeve IV Founder, Chapel Valley Landscape Company July 3, 1940–May 25, 2020 The industry suffered a deep loss during the pandemic, and LCA was honored to finally be able to recognize one of its founding members, J. Landon Reeve IV, who established Chapel Valley Landscape Company and was a significant industry influencer, setting the bar and establishing professional standards that landscape industry companies still seek to achieve.

LCA was privileged to have Deonne Wollman, Landon’s daughter, share many memories and achievements. Citing that her father came from humble beginnings and had to overcome adversity at a very young age, she shared how he and his wife, Janet Wheeler Reeve, worked tirelessly together to grow their business with innovations such as developing and implementing the first formal training and safety programs at the company. In 1967, he was a member of the original group of landscape companies that formed LCA, and from 1977–1979, he served as the association’s president. Landon’s reach extended beyond this region, and he was recognized for his leadership nationally.
Deonne ended with what she called her dad’s words of wisdom—“Landonisms,” which are his famous quotes that he frequently shared with us, and by which we will remember him:

Landon Reeve IV Annual Landscape Professionalism Award Recognizing the LCA member who has consistently demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, quality, and customer care in the landscape industry in the Maryland, D.C., and Virginia region. The LCA board selected Landon as the inaugural recipient, and Deonne graciously accepted on behalf of her family and Chapel Valley.
