Making the Most of Our “Tool Belt”: Utilizing LCA Events and Resources to Maximize Success This Spring

Spring will soon be upon us, bringing busy work schedules for the green industry. In anticipation of the peak season, many of us will embark on an annual preparation ritual. This ritual has developed from experience—the many years that we’ve spent becoming skilled in our roles have equipped us with the foresight to identify prior inefficiencies and improve them. But knowledge and foresight are not the only resources at our disposal for preparing for the road ahead!

The overarching goal of LCA is to support, enrich, and advocate for businesses that are part of the green industry. As members, we participate in LCA because it provides valuable benefits to us. Metaphorically, it is a tool in our tool belt. We have many tools on our belt—our expertise, the strength of our teams, our business infrastructures—and this network of industry peers is an additional component that helps us along the way. This year, LCA has been working very hard to expand the existing resources provided to members as well as to develop many new ones. In preparation for the upcoming season, there are several ways these resources can be utilized to maximize our businesses and enrich our teams.

But first, we must identify the pressing matters facing our businesses.

Take a moment to think about what this year’s priorities might be. Maybe there are important problem areas that should be remedied—such as training that we as individuals or the team as a whole may require. Or perhaps there are areas of strength that could be further improved and enriched. For some, the primary concerns facing the company might be legislative or regulatory matters.

For others, this year’s focus might be development, networking, or expansion. Once we’ve identified the important matters to tackle this year, we can pinpoint which services might be of benefit in addressing them. With our action items in mind, let’s review LCA’s member resources.

Training and Development

One of the resources offered to member companies is workforce training and development covering a wide spectrum of topics to help enhance business performance. Some of the available courses and seminars include safety training at the crew level, OSHA certifications, pest and chemical certifications, and application training, as well as a variety of administrative functions, such

as sales, management, and leadership. In addition, there are new developments related to the available training programs. LCA has an established partnership with the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) and this year will begin offering the CLT exam online as a replacement for the prior written format. Online training resources have also been developed to prepare for the exam. These resources have been designed to offer increased accessibility to the exam, thereby providing a more advanced and comprehensive training catalog to member organizations.

Advocacy

LCA employs several advocacy efforts designed to protect and further the business interests of member organizations, primarily by subsidizing the placement of a representative in the state legislature. Having a seat in the legislature is very important for protecting our interests; it keeps LCA, and in turn its member organizations, apprised of pending legislation. Because of this, we have the opportunity to speak out regarding the impacts of potential legislation on our businesses—before it has been passed. Osmanthus heterophyllus— A Versatile Problem-Solver

Osmanthus heterophyllus

Osmanthus heterophyllus, commonly called holly olive or false olive, has been around for many years. Despite its longevity as a nursery-grown plant, it has just recently become an extremely popular plant used in screens, masses, barriers, and specimen locations.

Michael Dirr lists the plant as having opposite, simple evergreen leaves that are elliptic, 1 to 2½” long x 1 to 1½” wide. The leaves are spiny with one to four points of prominent teeth. The plant does well in Zones 6 through 9.

What makes this plant exceptional for use in landscapes is that it will grow 8’ to 15’ high, with some older plants reaching up to 20’ in height.

Nursery growers will tell you it grows slowly, but it is dense, will tolerate sun or shade, can handle both wet and dry conditions, and is almost impenetrable to walk through. We have used this plant in all the above conditions with really good per-

formance overall. Lastly, and most importantly, this plant is deer tolerant, or maybe a better term is “deer proof.” I have not observed deer damage on this plant at any sites where it has been planted, and according to nursery growers to whom I have spoken, they too have had no damage.

So, in those sites where the skip laurel would fail due to deer, wet conditions, or insect damage, give this plant a try. The plant really is “bulletproof,” with no serious pests that can cause damage.

O s m a n t h u s h e terophyllus h a s several cultivars, most of which you are likely familiar: ‘Fastigiata’– upright form; ‘G o s h k i’–v a r ie gated form with green flecks on a gold, maturing to a cream-colored background; and

‘Gulftide’–compact, upright form growing to 10’ to 15’ in height.

As you can see, Osmanthus heterophyllus is one plant that should be examined and used more often. With no real pests, a naturally occurring type barricade, and screening potential no matter what the setting, Osmanthus heterophyllus is the plant that solves many of these problems that we landscapers see every day. Give this one a try!

City Springs is a 14-acre, multi-use city center. The City Green, a four-acre park within the project, includes an open lawn area, shade bosque, amphitheater, multiple plazas, and a network of fountains. When creating City Springs, the community requested that the design incorporate water and shade. Our scope included installing six water features, granite curbing, sub-slab and pavers, concrete flatwork, vehicular paving, joint caulking, planter walls, precast stone veneer walls/caps and brickwork, an 86-zone irrigation system, drainage, turf, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, stainless steel handrails and guardrails, pine straw mulch, and numerous site amenities.

Homeowner’s Guide to Aquatic Hitchhikers SOLitude Lake Management

Do you know what costs homeowner’s associations, small communities, and government agencies over $120 billion annually? Invasive species.

But beyond the monetary impacts, invasive species create unsightly, unbalanced, and unhealthy ecosystems. Regrettably, human activity is responsible for most infestations.

Whether you’re a part of a lake community, live near a stormwater pond, or even own a decorative backyard water garden, we all play pivotal roles in spreading—but also preventing—invasive aquatic species.

Education is the first step of prevention and can go a long way in keeping these unwanted species out of neighboring waterbodies. Many invasive plant infestations that we manage today could have been prevented by

exercising caution and following a few proactive steps: •

•

Keep your water features contained and prevent contents from entering nearby waterbodies. Many invasive species spread through fragmentation, meaning a small piece of the aquatic plant can cause an entirely new infestation in a nearby waterbody.

Do not cultivate non-native species on your property. Not all invasive species are unsightly; plants like purple loosestrife are often sought for their pretty purple flowers, but they can wreak havoc on native plant populations.

•

Do not dispose of old aquarium plants by dumping them into local waterways, which will ultimately lead to a lake or pond.

This is exactly how watermilfoil was introduced to North America. Now, there are infestations in nearly every U.S. state.

•

Help limit nutrient loading in nearby lakes and ponds by properly disposing of dog droppings, sweeping up grass clippings, and reducing fertilizer use on lawns and gardens. These factors are all sources of organic nutrients, which can fuel invasive aquatic plant growth after entering lakes and ponds through stormwater runoff.

Proactive management is key to preventing the spread of invasive aquatic plant species in our freshwater lakes and ponds.

Regularly monitor the vegetation in your pond. It is important to identify and properly remove any invasive species present as to prevent it from spreading. If you’re unsure of a species, a professional biologist can help with identification and offer sustainable management tips.

Get to know the potential invasive species that may appear in your area. Keep an eye out for them while on the water, and volunteer with the lake/pond association as a “weed watcher” or implement a boat ramp monitoring program to limit the potential for aquatic hitchhikers.

Torpedograss is an invasive species that was first introduced to the United States in 1876 near Mobile, Alabama. It has since spread to many states across the South and East Coasts.

There are several courses of action that can be taken to prevent an invasive species from entering a new body of water, but what happens if an invasive species is already present in the waterbody? If this is a pioneer infestation, be sure to note the exact location, take a photo of the specimen, and report it to the proper authorities. dispose of it before leaving the waterbody. The transport of any invasive species is illegal in many jurisdictions and may require a special permit. Once an infestation has been confirmed, management options should be considered promptly. Reach out to the owner, association, or state agency and suggest they consult their lake management professionals.

Invasive species impede our natural ecosystems and impose substantial annual costs to property owners, community associations, and city governments. It is an issue that will only get worse if no action is taken and it is up to everybody who uses, lives on and cares for our waterbodies to make every effort possible to prevent infestations. Prevention is the best method of defense against an invasive species. If unable to prevent an infestation of invasive species, we must rely on professional management, early detection, and rapid response to maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Smart Controls For Landscape Lighting New smart controls offer clients maximum control with minimum maintenance and expense

Smart control technology offers clients more options and flexibility for lighting controls than ever before. Clients can control their landscape lighting using an app on their smart phone. The three main types of smart controls for landscape lighting systems are: WIFI-based control systems; fixture manufacturer proprietary controls; and HUB-based controls. Of these three, we find HUB-based systems provide the best experience and overall value to our homeowners.

WIFI-based smart controls are a good option for budget-conscious, tech-savvy clients. A smartphone app sends a signal over the home WIFI network to a smart plug at the transformer. Examples of WIFIbased smart plugs include Wemo and Kasa. This equipment is inexpensive, costing about the same as traditional timers. One downside is that smart plugs will occasionally (once or twice a year) disconnect from the WIFI due to firmware updates, or power outages. When this happens, the smart plug receiver will need to be re-installed. This option is a good choice for clients who are willing, and capable of taking care of some on-going maintenance.

Proprietary Controls offered by fixture manufacturers such as Brilliance LED, FX Luxor, and Alliance also offer app-controlled products, using WIFI or BLUETOOTH. These systems offer the benefits that other smart control

systems provide, but tend to be unreliable. Fixture manufacturers typically do not specialize in controls, offering them as add-ons to their core product, light fixtures.

Smart phone app updates tend to be infrequent and inadequate, making these products prone to glitches.

HUB-based systems are more complex and expensive than other options, but are the most reliable. The system consists of a hub and smart plugs. The hub is hardwired directly to a modem/router, and sends out its own, amplified signal, rather than depending on the home WIFI signal. This eliminates the problem of re-setting smart plug receivers. Made by major electronics manufacturers such as Samsung (Samsung Smart Things) and Lutron (Lutron Casetta), these companies have the necessary resources required to regularly maintain and update their apps. As a result, HUBS tend to work seamlessly, with minimal ongoing maintenance.

We recommend and install HUB based systems. At a slightly higher price, hubs use regularly maintained apps that work well and rarely require smart plug receivers to be reconnected. Clients have the convenience of app controls, with minimal ongoing maintenance. These systems can be installed with new landscape lighting projects or retrofitted to existing systems. This resource, although seemingly a more casual function of the organization, can provide great benefit to members. Peer gatherings and discussions can be a great way for industry members to share innovations, information, and developments to enhance themselves and their businesses this season.

For client networking, the organization’s online profiles provide potential clients with information about member businesses that could enhance sales prospects.

These resources are just a few of the many upcoming events, activities, and operations LCA is currently developing. Oh, Deer!

Services designed to control this four-legged threat are gaining traction. But what deer-repelling tactics actually work?

They’re bold and hungry—and as development strips away their natural foraging areas, the landscape is a logical buffet for deer. So, they creep in. Actually, they leap over fences and parade in prancing lines looking for a snack. Those hostas? A hardy salad. The supposedly deer-resistant

perennials? Maybe not the tastiest, but they’ll do.

“There is a high demand for deer control services because deer are getting braver, and as we continue to build and take away their environments, they are coming into ours,” says Edward Thomas, general manager at Horizon Landscape in Wyckoff, New Jersey.

Deer control has grown as a service at Horizon Landscape, and the ser-

vice is marketed especially to clients who purchase seasonal color programs since annuals tend to be more attractive to deer, rabbits and other critters like squirrels.

Chris Markham’s company, New Jersey Deer Control, is dedicated to keeping the forest friends off of landscaping. “We used to do a lot of native landscaping for people— building hummingbird gardens at people’s house—and the deer were eating everything,” he says, noting

that the deer population exploded between the mid-1980s and mid2000s. “Deer were affecting my projects, and I was using store-bought products that weren’t effective.”

So, Markham did some research and created his own repellent that is mixed every morning and applied by his team of about 16 employees.

“A lot of landscapers try to do deer control by going to the store and buying products off the shelf, and a lot of them give up on the service because it’s not effective for them,” he says.

Now that Markham’s company only does deer control, he partners with landscape firms to serve as a subcontracted specialist.

Horizon Landscape uses a range of commercially produced repellents, switching up their products so deer don’t get accustomed to the taste.

In spring, a granular repellent along with a spray deters deer for longer, Thomas says, adding that the granular adds an extra mode of protection during the rainy months.

Deer control can be a frustrating pursuit for landscape contractors, but Markham and Thomas have strategies in place that are getting results.

Border Control

Markham says the main focus when spraying is the property’s perimeter because a spray on the border reminds deer the area is off-limits, he says.

Deer are creatures of habit, Markham reminds. “If you’ve seen the way they cross properties, their trails are called ‘deer paths’ for a reason. They like to travel the same route, and if you can alter their patterns and discourage them from the property, that’s half the battle right there.”

There are no guarantees, Markham adds. But he does get mostly positive results when his team treats property perimeters.

Deer-Resistant Plants

These help, but remember, “Deerresistant does not equal deer-proof,” Markham says.

Research plants before you put them in the ground, Thomas says. Deerresistant plants in New Jersey are

different than deer-resistant plants in Ohio.

Thomas also emphasizes what deerresistant means: “They won’t go to those plants first. A lot of deer are attracted to properties by their sense of smell,” he says. “That is their No. 1 tool when seeking plants—not by vision, by smell.”

Strong-scented perennials like lavender and some herbs naturally repel deer, as do thorny plants like barberry. But there are no guarantees. “The most effective way to stop deer is install a 9-foot fence on your property,” Thomas says.

Build a Barrier

Fences have to be about 9 feet to be effective. “Some people in our area will install chain-link fences and

do a mesh net above that to extend the height so deer won’t jump in,” Thomas says.

Another layer of protection: Install tall, dense evergreen hedges like boxwood or short-needled spruce.

Markham says sonic sensors and sprin k ler dev ices activated by motion sensors can help. “Some can be effective, but deer get acclimated to these things very quickly,” he says.

The fence is the only sure-fire way to stop deer.

Thomas thinks high deer populations are good for this service.

“People spend a lot of money on their landscaping—and a lot of these properties are surrounded by woods,” he says. “There is a very high demand for this service, and the demand is increasing.”

“When you have a good culture that is well established, it is easier to attract and retain good people,” he says. This does not happen overnight. “You have to think about redefining and creating a sound culture.”

More than that, “you have to have the ownership, or the top of the business involved” for a culture to work, says Fredericks. “It doesn’t work from the bottom up.”

Fredericks compares organizational cultures to icebergs. “You can only observe 10 percent; the rest is hidden beneath the surface,” he says.

“The invisible only becomes visible when you do a deep dive and right your own ship.”

He ticks off five essential steps to implementing any change in culture: 1. Check t he pu lse. Obser ve people.

2. Foster conversations. Create a safe place for them to approach you.

3. Develop a vision. People need to see where they are going.

4. Celebrate short term wins.

5. Live the culture by setting an example.

By listening, you are checking the pulse of your organization, looking at what would change, what should change and what can stay the same. “Foster conversations,” says Fredericks.

You mu s t m a ke it c le a r t h at complaining and gossiping are unacceptable, says Fredericks. Communication must be direct, authentic and complete. If someone is going to complain, that person also has the responsibility to propose some solutions.

Pay attention to the ethnic culture of your employees. “Cultural miscues can be as damaging as strategic miscues,” says Fredericks.

Fredericks believes that landscape contractors must have those in management who can build good relationships with Hispanic laborers. “They respect those who make an attempt to understand them,” he says. You will gain their respect if you try to relate to them and understand what they consider important.

Fredericks recommends developing a vision. “People want to know where they are going and how they can contribute,” he says. If, however, the culture doesn’t support your vision, it will not mean anything. And, without the support of your staff, you will have a hard time implementing any changes.

your listening sessions, celebrate the short-term wins. Let your employees know that you not only are listening, but acting on what they tell you.

When you are listening, you also will learn what makes a team member loyal to a business. “What they define as necessary may be different than the owner,” says Fredericks.

Understanding that makes it even more important to create an atmosphere in which employees feel comfortable talking about their ideas, concerns and issues.

In helping companies, Fredericks has been amazed by the ideas that employees bring to the table. In many cases, these are people who the landscape contractor owners did not think had an interest in contributing. “When you ask people, they will open up,” says Fredericks.
