An Unexamined Life … Strategically Planning for the Future

Happy summer! We have made it past the solstice, and I hope everyone is enjoying the cicada-free months this year. Summer is a wonderful time to stay busy with fun projects, professionally and personally. From what I hear, our industry continues to thrive, and I can’t wait to see the wonderful projects that are submitted this year for our annual LCA Excellence in Landscape Awards. As we continue to work, I hope everyone is able to take some time for your own mental health and find ways to relax when you can. I am looking forward to camping and weekend trips with my family. I always enjoy the family time and disconnecting from “the real world” for a few days—it offers a great time to decompress and is an opportunity for self-reflection in my life.

While not always an easy thing to practice or fit into your schedule, self-reflection is the practice of taking time to think about, meditate on, evaluate, and give serious thought into our behaviors, attitudes, motivations, and desires. It is a “deep dive” into our feelings and emotions, trying to discover the “why?” behind them. As Socrates said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.”

I believe that this applies not only to us as individuals but also to companies and organizations.

Over the last two years, the LCA board has been conducting a selfreflection of the organization, trying to define who we are and what we offer to our members. We know the last two years have been challenging for everyone, and we have felt these impacts as well. The board has taken time to make a few internal changes and evaluate the association and what we offer to our members. We recently changed our executive director, who helps guide us and makes our goals a reality. I want to thank our previous executive director, Thérèse Clemens, for all she has done for the organization, and we welcome Matt Coffindaffer into the role.

In addition to bringing in a new executive director to help guide us, the board worked these last few months to revisit and refresh our strategic plan. The strategic planning process offers the board members an opportunity to define our goals and objectives, creating a vision for the future of the organization. Our previous plan was due for an update, and we

took this opportunity to evaluate and refresh our strategic initiatives and how we plan to implement them.

It was interesting to review the previous plan and reflect on what has been achieved.

This reflection and restructuring of priorities will set us up for longterm success for our members and create amazing opportunities for them within the industry! We are always working to offer high-quality resources and sponsor the best events we can. Please keep an eye out for new in-person events related to our industry, including educational and social events, leadership and volunteer opportunities, and chances to share our work with like-minded professionals. We are excited to share the new plan with you soon. I know we can achieve amazing things together. As always, thanks for your support of LCA. This is a fantastic community that I am proud to be a part of!

Nepeta faassenii— A Minty Perennial

lower growing varieties. It’s a great combination plant with Echinacea, Shasta Daisy, and Monarda to create a colorful pollinator garden.

I’m going to introduce, or more accurately, reintroduce one of my favorite perennials. If you’re looking to pack a punch of color that lasts all summer, Nepeta faassenii is your plant.

Next time you’re looking for a show-stopping perennial, Nepeta faassenii is your plant.

This minty-scented perennial is part of the Lamiaceae family and has about 250 species! It’s native to Europe, Asia, and Africa but has naturalized in North America.

Most of us may commonly know this perennial as Catmint. It got its name because of the euphoric effect it has on house cats.

It’s quite versatile since it is hardy in zones 3, 4,5,6,7 and 8! Nepeta likes the full sun and does not like to stay too wet. Average heights are between 15 and 17 inches.

The flowers are a perfectly dusty purple blue with foliage that is a silvery green. You can find butterflies, bees, and sometimes hummingbirds flocking to it. The best part about this long-blooming perennial is that it is deer and rabbit resistant. We can attribute that to its fantastic smell! Nepeta is fairly low maintenance as well. As with other perennials, it needs to be cut back in late fall or winter, but it does respond well to a light shearing after the first bloom to promote even more blooms!

My personal favorite variety is ‘Walkers Low’. It is the perfect border perennial and will even thrive in rock gardens. It grows about 2 feet by 2 feet and is one of the GROUNDWORK

Lake Dredging 101: What Is Dredging?

Very much like a living organism, lakes go through many changes.

Several factors affect their health and well-being, but almost nothing is as detrimental to the health of your golf course waterbodies as sediment buildup that creates an inabil-

ity for it to retain water. Proactive lake management strategies, such as aeration, nutrient remediation, and buffer management, can help keep lakes healthy. However, as your waterbody naturally ages and accumulates more and more sediment,

dredging may be required to return the lake to its original healthy state.

Lake Dredging 101: What Is Dredging? tom of the waterbody. Over time, this sediment continues to build up and can cause serious issues, such as noxious odors, discoloration, scum, algae, and aquatic weed overgrowth.

If left unmanaged, the situation often becomes increasingly dire, and your waterbody will struggle to survive.

What Are Signs of an Aging Pond?

Flooding and decay: Excess debris and sediment accumulation over the years can cause the lake to become narrower and shallower. Slimy muck may also begin developing on the lake pond bottom, which is often accompanied by murkiness and bad odors.

Plant and algae overgrowth: The excess nutrients that collect on the lake’s bottom feed nuisance weeds and algae, leading to overgrowth that depletes the water of oxygen which beneficial aquatic plants and essential organisms need to survive.

Absence of wildlife: Diminished water quality conditions and pond volume can create less hospitable environments for aquatic life.

Recurring fish kills and an absence of native wildlife like waterfowl are signs of a deteriorating lake or pond.

What Is Lake Dredging?

The quick definition of lake dredging is “the process of removing excess sediment using a machine called a dredge.” This is an impactful management solution used in many lakes and stormwater and irrigation ponds due to the natural process of sedimentation. Dredging helps reset the lifecycle of a waterbody and has many benefits:

How Does Dredging Work?

Multiple dredging options are available that can accommodate various properties, environmental restrictions, budgets, and waterbody types.

Hydraulic dredging and mechanical dredging are two excellent management services used to restore lakes and ponds to their functioning state.

investment will be well worth it and can give years back to your waterbody for you to enjoy.

Hydraulic dredges have a submersible pump that sucks up the debris. Once it is excavated, the muck, sediment, and debris travel through a long tube from the bottom of the lake up to the surface. The contents of the tube— the dredged material—must then be disposed of in compliance with state, federal, and local government regulations and laws. Hydraulic dredging is generally preferred for lakes, rivers, and wetlands when the volumes are large and site logistics favor the transfer of sediments via pipeline over many truck trips.

Mechanical dredges use buckets to excavate sediments and transfer them to barges or trucks for disposal or beneficial reuse. Truck transportable mechanical dredges such as Aquamogs can be delivered to virtually any waterbody to remove sediments in targeted areas or to clear rooted marginal plants such as cat-

What Are the Benefits of Dredging?

Dredging helps improve and preserve the ecosystems in lakes in many ways. By getting rid of dead plants and vegetation, sludge, trash, sewage accumulation, and other debris, dredging helps improve water quality, prevent flooding, and support native wildlife. In addition, it mitigates excess nutrients in the water caused by runoff. By reducing these nutrients, you can decrease or stop the excess growth of plants, thus staving off oxygen depletion in the lake.

Dredging is an essential part of lake and pond maintenance that makes aquatic ecosystems safer and more enjoyable for recreation as well as maintaining their aesthetic appeal.

Dredging is also used as a preventative measure to keep canals and waterways, in particular, free of debris so that boats can move freely and unimpeded.

Are There Dredging Alternatives?

Given that lake and pond dredging is one of the costliest and most invasive freshwater management projects your waterbody will ever face, it’s wise to first consider hydroraking and biological lake dredging as an alternative. In many lakes and ponds, sediments are composed of organic materials that can be GROUNDWORK

degraded onsite or consumed underwater using these strategies, which are often lower in cost than a permitted dredging project.

A lake and pond management professional can evaluate your aquatic ecosystem and help you determine the best strategy for your property and your budget. They can also help you design a year-round management plan to nurture the health and beauty of your waterbody before or after your next dredging project.

Nursery owners are looking for plant material that grows quickly and sells into the planting screening market. Everyone who buys a new house wants to have a barrier planting that screens out their neighbors.

Many Leyland cypress, Thuja ‘Green Giants’, and ‘Emerald Green’ arborvi-

tae are filling this need. The nursery industry needs to diversify and pick a few other species. If we keep putting out the same old options, I guarantee we will see insect and disease problems hitting this limited number of plants.

Ilex × koehneana, female plant.

Plant diversity is one of the pillars of an IPM approach to dealing with potential pest problems.

One of the holly groups that holds up well as barrier, or even as specimen plant, is Ilex × koehneana. We have been growing this holly at the farm for the last 18 years, and it holds up well in winter weather. Bill Kuhl, of McLean Nursery, introduced me to this hybrid cultivar years ago. The plant has performed well, riding through the polar vortex and polar express -8 °F weather of those two events with no real damage showing up the following spring.

The cut stems root fairly easily, and the plant has strong vigor. This plant is dioicous (meaning: two houses), so you have female and male plants.

The berries are large and borne on one-year-old wood. The leaves are large and dark green. There are female plants that need a male pollinator to set fruit. Males are more vigorous and serve well as border plants that block out views. Bill Kuhl showed me two-year-old male plants that were 3 to 4 feet tall. He commented that males grow much faster than females. This makes it perfect for growing as a screening plant, just using male plants.

Ilex in the Nursery—Fits Within an IPM Approach continued The hybrid name koehneana honors Bernard Koehne (1848–1918), a German botany professor. Here is a brief description and genology and some of the plant’s attributes: •

Ilex × koehneana, commonly called Koehne holly, is a cross between I. aquifolium and I. latifolia.

•

It is an erect, narrow-pyramidal, densely-branched, large, hybrid evergreen shrub or small tree that typically grows to 15 to 25 feet tall with a spread 10 to 15 feet wide.

Branches are clad with glossy, spiny-margined, elliptic, evergreen, dark green leaves (2 to 3 inches long).

•

Inconspicuous, tiny, greenishwhite flowers bloom in May.

Ilex verticillate—Poor Berry Set? I have had inquiries from some nursery growers saying they had a poor fruit set on their winterberry plants, Ilex verticillata. I visited with Bill Kuhl of McLean Holly Nursery to discuss a solution. Bill told me that many people use ‘Jim Dandy’ as their male pollinator, which works for some but not all female winterberry females.

Bill suggested that the male ‘Apollo’ had a long bloom time that started as early as ‘Jim Dandy’ but lasted longer into the season, with pollen sources fertilizing mid-season blooming winterberry.

clones such as ‘Afterglow’, ‘Aurantiaca’, and ‘Red Sprite’. It grows to about 5 feet tall.

For late-flowering female winterberries, he suggested using ‘Southern Gentleman’. This plant is a lateblooming male pollinator for ‘Winter Red’, ‘Winter Gold’, ‘Cacapon’, ‘Shaver’, ‘Sparkleberry’, and other later blooming female clones. If you are not getting the fruit set you desire, then look into adding other male cultivars into your planting.

‘Jim Dandy’ is great, but it is a slowgrowing, early-flowering dwarf male clone. This cultivar is useful as a pollinator for early-flowering female Ilex × koehneana, male holly.

Flowers are fragrant but generally inconspicuous. Pollinated flowers give way to berry-like red drupes (1/3-inch diameter) that ripen in fall and persist into winter.

Female Hollies ‘Lassie’ is a female holly that never fails to set fruit if a pollinator is nearby. It seems to be the earliest in its family to set fruit, even fruiting the first year. The berries are shiny, vivid red, and 5/16 inches (7.9 mm) in diameter. ‘Martha Berry’ is a new introduction that looks good.

Male pollinators include I. × koehneana cultivars ‘Ajax’, ‘Chieftain’, ‘Jade’, and ‘Loch Raven’, and ‘Apollo’, although English and other hybrid male hollies that bloom at the same time will do.

Designing With Synthetic Turf

Synthetic turf has come a long way since the original green carpeting that you used to see glued to front porches and patios in the 1980s.

Today, we have many different styles, pile heights, textures and even synthetic thatch to give an even more realistic visual.

As a designer, synthetic turf is just another element we use to beautify a space and provide homeowners with another fantastic feature for them to enjoy. The use of synthetic turf in the landscape can have many different uses and benefits: pet friendly turf that will never brown, putting greens to help with your game, an environmentally friendly option that requires no water and provides great permeability, or as a detail in a patio that otherwise would be too hard to maintain. As you can see, we are only limited by our imagination.

different, and your client’s expectations may not be met.

Another issue that we as designers have to be aware of is installation practices. Synthetic turf is only as permeable as the base material that you install beneath it. If you are utilizing 21aa, your permeability will be greatly reduced, as this base material has a great deal of fines which do not allow for maximum permeability or movement of water through the turf. Using a permeable material such as 6a will allow for a greater water-holding capacity, thus, allowing water to percolate through

the turf and into the base, where it will be held until the soil absorbs it.

This naturally replenishes groundwater reserves rather than running off into the storm sewers and ending up in rivers or large bodies of water carrying additional fertilizers and other pollutants that can be harmful to our environment. Synthetic turf, like carpet, comes in a large roll, this is an important piece of information designers need to be aware of, as seams can be difficult to hide even with seam tape. So, design your spaces carefully and inform your clients so that expectations are met.

There are many different manufacturers of this product, and just like any other element that we as designers use, we must be familiar with that product and the pros and cons to utilizing it. When developing a space, you must understand that this is a manufactured product, and just like pavers, each batch can be slightly different, so if you are trying to match product from a previous installation, colors may be slightly GROUNDWORK

important element to consider when installing most types of synthetic turf; while some are designed without the need, others can utilize recycled rubber infill, such as sports fields. The infill helps the turf stand up, giving it a more natural look; otherwise, the turf will lay down and have more of a flat appearance making it look more like that 1980s style green carpeting—not attractive. The acrylic infill is more like sand, which not only weighs the turf down but will also obscure the backing.

Designing with synthetic turf can be quite exciting, as there is a turf

type for many different applications, ranging from lawn replacement, putting greens, or even specifically designed for pet-friendly applications. Imagine, having a lush, beautiful lawn that requires no water, does not fade, and is green and beautiful all year round no matter what.

Each type of turf is designed specifically for each application. If you are designing in a pet-friendly space, you may want to consider leaving irrigation in place to help wash urine through that may persist, giving off an odor that can be quite offensive, especially during the heat of the summer, while dog messes are eas-

ily cleaned up and washed off using a hose. Just think about no longer having large dead patches of sod in your lawn from the constant exposure to dog urine or the dead pathways that your dog can eventually create running back and forth dragging mud and other debris into your home.

Imagine, a beautiful lawn that requires no water, no mowing, and no edging and will stay green and beautiful for many years, all without the use of chemical applications to help keep it green and free of weeds. The savings in time and resources can be immense, and it can help lessen the impact that lawns have on the environment. Remember, turf is not naturally occurring and places a lot of strain on the environment to maintain a monoculture, but synthetic turf is not a substitute for a sprawling lush lawn that gives off that wonderful odor every time you mow.

Other options to consider are more ornate in nature. We have all seen those magazines promoting a checkerboard pattern of grass and pavers in modern landscapes. Beautiful they may be, but the reality of maintaining such an element is typically beyond most homeowner’s purview and can create a headache for your maintenance crews, not to mention where to place your furniture on said patio. With patio designs such as this, watering will become quite the challenge along with mowing. Each week, the patio furniture will have to be moved so the lawn can be mowed, which can lead to grass stains from mowers or uneven turf from string trimmers. Irrigation will also be necessary to maintain the lawn within the patio, and the furniture may be in the way of irrigation heads, leading to dead spots that may not be watered adequately, not to mention

continued city that you are working in will consider this product permeable. Each municipality will have its own take on the product and may or may not consider the product permeable, so make sure you check with the local government office to make sure that you are not exceeding nonpermeable requirements.

As designers, we need to have an open mind and always keep our eyes open for fun and innovative ways to use products new and old.

Most often, additional watering may be required and can quickly escalate to the issue of having too much

moisture. For spaces around pools, synthetic turf is an amazing application; no lawn clippings end up in your pool, and it’s a cleaner look.
