President’s Message The Distance We’ve Come, and the Places We’re Going: Celebrating the Year and Looking Ahead Aaron Raines 2020 President

The year has finally come to a close, marking another successful year on the books for LCA, its members, and the green industry as a whole!

Although the year certainly didn’t unfold in the way that we’d anticipated, and we all found ourselves facing new challenges along the way, it is truly remarkable how well we have all risen to meet those challenges individually and for our businesses. This year, I’ve been amazed by what an incredibly dedicated and resilient group the LCA members are, and we should all be very proud!

Each year, LCA has a tradition of looking back and celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of its members with just that very pride and joy—and 2020 should be no different! We have done a great many noteworthy things: LCA members have continued creating aweinspiring landscapes; participating in events; and even bettering ourselves, our businesses, and our organization despite it all. First, those accomplishments include a recordbreaking number of LCA Excellence in Landscaping Award submissions, even amid the logistical challenges many of us faced! Clearly, then, we’ve met those challenges in a commendable way, and have risen above them. Secondly, at LCA, we have

made improvements to our services, including a revamped award submission platform with new functionality to allow members to save in-progress award submission forms and return later to finish. Finally, we have all attended seminars, networked, and remained in touch in new ways, and have shown dedication to and care for our green industry community.

The support we have shown one another through difficult times has been amazing. This year, the fruits of our labors and the character of this community have truly spoken for themselves.

But in addition to looking back at the year we’ve had and celebrating our achievements, we should also all take a moment to look forward to next year and the exciting opportunities we have to accomplish even more great work, network with industry colleagues, expand our knowledge, and try new things we haven’t done before. LCA has been working hard to plan for the year ahead, adapting our annual events to new formats.

In February 2021, we will again hold our annual Pesticide and Fertilizer Applicator Recertification Conference, this time in a virtual setting.

The event will allow both the opportunity for us to network with our industry colleagues, which has been

a particularly beneficial way for many of us to find community amid the distance, as well as the chance to attend educational events and learn valuable horticultural information. It has been very popular in past years, and although it will be different, this virtual format offers a new opportunity for LCA members who haven’t been able to participate in previous years to do so with ease and convenience! Of course, in addition to the big annual events, LCA will be holding seminars and networking opportunities regularly throughout 2021. Through these events, we can all connect and see the familiar faces of our friends and colleagues that comprise this organization’s dedicated group of hardworking individuals.

Not only is it the end of the year, but it is also the end of my tenure as the LCA president. For the past two years, it has been my absolute joy to work with and alongside both the team here at LCA as well as the cherished members and participants.

I have had the pleasure of seeing the great successes this industry can achieve, the fantastic products and services we produce and provide, and the professionalism we embody. Simply put, this organization is truly a great group of people!

Fall’s Finale

Camellia sasanqua: Fall camellia

Autumn is of course the season where we stop looking for flowers in our landscapes and turn to plants that can provide exceptional color from changing foliage, or from fruit.

Must we? No! Consider the fall-blooming camellia, Camellia sasanqua, and its many cultivars and hybrids. Beginning in mid-October (or even later) this nondescript, medium-textured broadleaved evergreen positively erupts with 1–2” single or double flowers that are bright pink or white (less frequently rose or maroon). Singleflowered cultivars have the extra attribute of many prominent yellow stamens; these types are highly favored by bees. Some cultivars have a slight fragrance. Blooms can continue over several weeks if weather is mild; however, after frosts, there are usually many untouched buds to provide a repeat show until hard freezes

end the parade. This attribute makes those that don’t start blooming until November still useful in the landscapes of the mid-Atlantic. Faded or damaged flowers usually fall quickly (much like their more familiar spring cousins, Camellia japonica).

This is not a new plant in our landscaping palette, but after the disastrous cold winters beginning in 1976 and continuing through the 1980s, “sasanquas” (as they are collectively called) seemed out of the question for use in the mid-Atlantic except in inner city gardens, near water, or toward the coast. The prevailing climate zone rating then was USDA 6b, and only cultivars rated at Zone 7 or higher were available.

most successful strategy involved crossing traditional sasanqua cultivars with the also fall-flowering Camellia oleifera, or tea-oil camellia.

This hardier species has been widely grown in Asia for centuries for its heavy fruiting, producing copious large seeds containing 25% of their volume as a light oil highly prized for cooking and commercial uses.

Hanna Mathers, Ohio State University New research to find successful weed controls in landscape beds will be discussed, along with weed traits that increase their difficulty and are used for their identification. Fourteen common but challenging weeds from six prominent families will be presented with controls.

Landscape Diseases—A 2020 Recap Dave Clement, UMD Extension Karen Rane, UMD Extension Spots, blights, wilts, and root rots—trees and shrubs suffered from several diseases in 2020. Learn how to recognize and deal with these common and not-so-common diseases and what to expect in 2021.

New Herbicides and New Uses Hanna Mathers, Ohio State University There are several new herbicides that have been released in the landscape market over the past 10 years. However, few landscapers are taking advantage of the increased control and reduced injury provided by them. Five new granular formulations and one new liquid combination from recent MI Specialty Crop Block Grant research will be discussed. Additionally, we will cover new ways of using these products and where they fit best in your weed control program.

Right-of-Way Applications Charles F. Schuster, UMD Extension Pesticide application in right of ways requires care with regard to products selected and methods used. This seminar will discuss the latest information on application methods and chemicals. Discussion will include preventing overapplication of chemicals that will cause large areas of no soil cover, leading to potential erosion. A review of the region’s approved chemicals will be included.

Michael J. Raupp, Ph.D., UMD Time to get prepared for trillions of periodical cicadas that will appear in May 2021 in the mid-Atlantic region. Find out what to expect in terms of timing, biology, injury they will cause, and management. The arrival of these insects can be disturbing. Learn key steps to take to cut down on the hysteria.

Diseases of Tall Fescue: 2020 and Beyond Richard J. Buckley, Rutgers University Tall fescue is routinely recommended for lawn and landscape turf in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast due to its heat and drought tolerance, insect and disease resistance, and need for less fertilizer and irrigation than other cool-season species. Every silver lining has a touch of gray, however, and tall fescue has a disease Achilles heel that was exposed during the hot, wet summer of 2020. This 60-minute lecture covers the three key diseases of tall fescue in a lawn care setting. Proper identification and control, including all cultural, chemical, and biological options within the context of proper IPM practice, will be discussed.

Plant of the Month continued However, ornamentally, its small white flowers don’t excite. Brookside Gardens planted it at its McCrillis Gardens facility in warmer Bethesda as a curiosity and an addition to the broadleaf palette, and there are large stands on Asian Valley’s slopes at the U.S. National Arboretum.

By the early 1990s Dr. Ackerman had enough cold-tested and surviving progeny of his breeding work to name cultivars. Many can be readily recognized by the word “Winter’s” in their names: ‘Winter’s Rose’, ‘Winter’s Dream’, ‘Winter’s Waterlily’, and more. Others do not contain that moniker, for example, ‘Polar Ice’, ‘Snow Flurry’, and ‘Londontowne Blush’. All are reliably hardy to Zone 6 and perhaps even colder. Most are light pink, pale pink, or white, and can be single, semi-double, or double. Compared to the range of flower color in older commercial cultivars, they aren’t as flashy…but they survive. Today, some of these cultivars are staples of nursery production, effectively extending the range of fall-blooming camellias northward.

But then came another, less deliberate development: climate change.

Today, portions of the mid-Atlantic have now been upgraded to Zone 7.

Whether this is permanent or a manifestation of a long cycle, it has opened up more possibilities for successfully growing sasanquas of many sorts in our area, including some of the older commercial cultivars that would not tolerate Zone 6. I am still shocked, frankly, to see nice specimens of sasanquas now thriving in the open in the outer DC suburbs and beyond.

They had vanished from even close-in places like Kensington, Wheaton, and Bethesda by the late 1970s.

How fortunate it is, then, that we can now safely plant sasanquas and relish this last burst of bloom of the season among the changing leaves and chilly temperatures. Sasanquas are easy to grow in sandy, loamy, or even clay soils that are amended.

They prefer slightly acidic conditions and benefit from light shade (they can burn in sun but will bloom in darker conditions). Two things must be avoided: poor drainage of any duration and fall planting. As a plant that straddles the border still between hardy and tender, planting in spring is the insurance that is key to survival. Commercially, they are usually produced in containers, though larger B&B specimens can be found. In either case, they

should be planted at the same level as they were in the pot or the ball, or higher; container plants should be checked for circling roots that can later cause girdling.

As you visit jobs, nurseries, or just travel though landscapes in fall, keep an eye out for these beauties. Once you start seeing them, you’ll find more than you expect. Look at them up close to get better acquainted.

You can see a few large specimens at McCrillis Gardens in Bethesda and Brookside Gardens in Wheaton; they are Ackerman hybrids and have been there beginning in 1993. Make a mental note to search for “sasanquas” next spring and try them on projects or your home landscape… it’s a lot safer now. You and your clients will be rewarded with a blast of bloom that will end the growing year with a bang.

Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America Commercial Maintenance —

DECADE AWARD—

The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land is a unique public garden located in Northeast Washington, D.C. For over 100 years this garden has provided a space for peaceful reflection and prayer. Most of the original design elements from the gardens earliest days are still in place. Under our care over the last 11 years, the gardens have been restored and transformed into a unique respite. The property is staffed with a full-time gardener.

His efforts are augmented by maintenance and enhancement crews, depending on the task. Each year the gardens are plated with over 10,000 tulips and 8,000 summer annuals

Swinks Mill Residence Outdoor Living Area In 2009, our firm was retained to install the rear yard landscape and create an open, freeflowing environment that would introduce new materials while rooting itself into the traditional architecture of the home. After the removal of an existing in-ground pool and failing deck, we installed a contemporary pool that is a “standalone� water feature itself. Anchored by a new architectural deck/screened porch/screened patio, the backyard environment was truly reinvented with drama and many spaces for entertaining and enjoying the private oasis.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. Vienna Residence Residential Maintenance We began maintenance on this 4-acre estate property immediately after the design build project was completed in 2012. Our scope of services include almost every outdoor maintenance service imaginable. Our mowing and detail crews visit the site weekly from March to December. Seasonal color is rotated four times annually, along with specialty flower displays for large gatherings throughout the year. We regularly pressure-wash all paved surfaces, manage the pool maintenance company, and even provide window washing twice during the summer months.

Bodkin Point Residence Residential Maintenance Our firm installed a comprehensive design build project in 2006. We began maintenance in 2007. This waterfront property at Bodkin Point, Maryland, requires weekly mowing and detail visits. The client has high expectations and demands that the property is always tidy, clean, and well manicured. We provide all horticultural services including water management, deer control, hardscape pressure washing, arbor care, and chemical turf applications.

McHale Landscape Design, Inc. A Bethesda Residence Residential Maintenance Several different design build firms have performed work at this property over the last 15 years. Through all of it, our firm has maintained the property. With each new garden project, our maintenance scope of work would change accordingly. For the past 15 years, our firm has organically maintained the turf areas, selectively hand pruned and pocket pruned all plantings, performed tree work, and managed subcontracted arborists. The property showcases beautiful, mature, and traditional plantings.

Heritage Grand Awards Awards D. A. Dunlevy

Historic Kensington Residence Outdoor Living Area – Design Build The homeowners were intent on having a private, inviting space for their friends and family. With a pool at the top of the wish list, the designers had to address a low part of the yard that held a great deal of water. The design demanded the elevation to be higher than the existing grade, which required further engineering for the pool and spa construction.

Soil was used from the excavation to achieve the designed elevation and drainage plan. A custom pool and spa were then built. Construction of a generous surrounding flagstone pool deck and dining area, a lounge area, and a unique stone fire pit followed. Other touches included a carpentry changing area, an ipe diving board, winding stone paths, stone walls that doubled as benches, and extensive plantings that tied it all together.

Historic Guilford Renovation Total Residential Contracting This 1920s historic Georgian style home was built with grand proportions and Old World details that was reflected in the landscape plan. The hardscape elements consist of four different stone retaining walls, a series of six flights of masonry stairs, four series of stepping stone/boulder stair paths throughout the gardens. The contractor has retained the maintenance of the site since its construction, including extensive annual plantings each year. Most recently, architectural additions such as a raised garden bed topped by obelisks, Greek revival era planters, and hanging baskets have been added.

Grand Awards Ruppert Landscape

Scissortail Park Commercial Landscape Installation Scissortail Park links the heart of the Oklahoma City to the riverfront—a city goal known as the “Core to Shore” plan. The upper park was a two-year installation that was completed in 2019 and represents 40 of the 70-acre design (the second half of which is slated to begin in 2021). The central promenade features unique art lighting that will link the upper and lower park and enable continuity to the river. To bring this project to fruition, we installed concrete flatwork, subslab, pavers, drainage pipe and stone, decomposed granite, rubberized aggregate path, safety surface, artificial turf, a playground, a dog park, soil, filter fabric, sod, trees, perennials, shrubs and wildflower seed, mulch, and a pond-fed irrigation system.

The Boro Commercial Landscape Installation

The Boro is a 17-acre, multi-phase development in the heart of Tysons Corner, Virginia.

Phase 1 of this project is just steps from Greensboro Metro and is home to mixeduse residential, retail, entertainment, and offices as well as a two-acre urban space known as Magnetic Park—all designed to capture the vibrant spirit of a true downtown neighborhood. This multi-level project has been designed to improve Tyson’s walkability and connectivity, demonstrate how the area’s old office parks can be reimagined, and tie it to the city’s stormwater management plan. All of these things work to create an environmentally conscious area where people can live, work, and recreate.

Ruppert Landscape

The Washington DC Temple/The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Commercial Landscape Installation Located in Kensington, Maryland, this temple was the first built on the East Coast, and with 160,000 SF of space, is the third largest temple in the world. The client’s intent for the project was to reinvigorate the temple and surrounding landscape, which was installed over 45 years earlier. To that end, 45,000 SF of landscape was removed to make way for this robust renovation. The project included the transplantation of 18 trees and the installation of two fountains; a grasscrete fire lane; pavers; custom-made granite planter boxes and trash receptacles; crushed decorative stone; an irrigation system; underdrainage; soil; sod; nearly 300 trees; shrubs; and perennials and groundcover.

Ruppert Landscape City Springs Commercial Maintenance

City Springs is a 14-acre, multi-use city center that functions as the city’s civic and community anchor. The city green, which is a four-acre park within the project, includes an open lawn area, shade bosque, an amphitheater, multiple plazas, and a network of fountains. When creating City Springs, the community requested that the design incorporate water and shade, to pay tribute to the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries and to the lush tree canopy for which the city is known. Our scope of work includes the maintenance of 63,250 SF of turf; 350 trees; and 19,000 shrubs, annuals, perennials, and grasses.

Chapel Valley Landscape Private Residence in Fairfax, VA Outdoor Living Area

This residential installation was performed on a wooded lot that was formerly home to three different residences. The intent of the project was to blend the mature woodland with many existing trees to the combined residence and newly installed landscape. The client desired to blend the existing and new landscape.

Georgetown Secret Garden Outdoor Living Area – Design Build This Georgetown house has wonderful historic character with modern touches and finishes throughout. The garden was completely re-envisioned with only one existing pine tree remaining in place. To accommodate the different programming of spaces required, the designers split up the one open space into multiple rooms primarily delineated with Boxwood hedging. This allowed for a generously sized sitting area, a separate dining space, and a quiet lounge area. Within the sitting area is a custom-designed water feature installed up against a brick privacy wall. The privacy wall was treated for protection, as the water recirculates up through the concealed plumbing of the steel frame and ripples gently down the vertical surface of the wall, and back to the basin.

Grand Awards Lehnhoff’s Landscaping Phoenix Residence Outdoor Living Area

The customer wanted to create a space that included lush landscaping and a pathway from the side of the house to the lower existing in-ground pool, and incorporate a new outdoor kitchen area. We decided to take some risk and introduce new elements and materials into the rear yard. Specifically, we installed a white cedar pergola, stacked stone outdoor kitchen and seating area, and a plethora of thermal bluestone slabs mixed with Mexican beach pebbles. We incorporated thermal bluestone curbing details along some of the gardens. We also poured exposed river round aggregate staircases complimented with bluestone treads. We stayed true to our landscape style preference by adding lush perennial plantings and natural stone accent boulders.

This is a home situated in the woods in McLean, Virginia. The client has some specific expectations as to how the property should be maintained. Symmetry is important to the client, without being too stuffy. They want to see color, but it shouldn't be overpowering.

They want an aesthetically pleasing landscape that is also functional enough for their kids to have space to run around. We work closely with the client to ensure all these needs are met, while keeping their garden in top shape. Maintaining things in a manner that allows the various plantings in their natural form is important to both us and the client.

Our team took over after the home was built. The builder installed a pool and stone retaining walls, and the client asked us to take it from there. Our scope of work included a synthetic turf putting green; a sunken, double-spiral themed plant garden; a raised stone planter vegetable garden; and a luxurious, architecturally detailed pool house. The interior of the pool house features a grand TV, a horizontal fire feature, custom stone bar tops, a shower and changing room, and a vaulted mahogany ceiling with detailed coffered open beams. Smart Controls For Landscape Lighting New smart controls offer clients maximum control with minimum maintenance and expense

Smart control technology offers clients more options and flexibility for lighting controls than ever before. Clients can control their landscape lighting using an app on their smart phone. The three main types of smart controls for landscape lighting systems are: WIFI-based control systems; fixture manufacturer proprietary controls; and HUB-based controls. Of these three, we find HUB-based systems provide the best experience and overall value to our homeowners.

WIFI-based smart controls are a good option for budget-conscious, tech-savvy clients. A smartphone app sends a signal over the home WIFI network to a smart plug at the transformer. Examples of WIFIbased smart plugs include Wemo and Kasa. This equipment is inexpensive, costing about the same as traditional timers. One downside is that smart plugs will occasionally (once or twice a year) disconnect from the WIFI due to firmware updates, or power outages. When this happens, the smart plug receiver will need to be re-installed. This option is a good choice for clients who are willing, and capable of taking care of some on-going maintenance.

Proprietary Controls offered by fixture manufacturers such as Brilliance LED, FX Luxor, and Alliance also offer app-controlled products, using WIFI or BLUETOOTH. These systems offer the benefits that other smart control

systems provide, but tend to be unreliable. Fixture manufacturers typically do not specialize in controls, offering them as add-ons to their core product, light fixtures.

Smart phone app updates tend to be infrequent and inadequate, making these products prone to glitches.

HUB-based systems are more complex and expensive than other options, but are the most reliable. The system consists of a hub and smart plugs. The hub is hardwired directly to a modem/router, and sends out its own, amplified signal, rather than depending on the home WIFI signal. This eliminates the problem of re-setting smart plug receivers. Made by major electronics manufacturers such as Samsung (Samsung Smart Things) and Lutron (Lutron Casetta), these companies have the necessary resources required to regularly maintain and update their apps. As a result, HUBS tend to work seamlessly, with minimal ongoing maintenance.

We recommend and install HUB based systems. At a slightly higher price, hubs use regularly maintained apps that work well and rarely require smart plug receivers to be reconnected. Clients have the convenience of app controls, with minimal ongoing maintenance. These systems can be installed with new landscape lighting projects or retrofitted to existing systems. The Ivy Hotel Courtyard Commercial Landscape Installation – Design Build The Ivy Hotel opened its doors for business in fall 2015 in the heart of downtown Baltimore. The surrounding structure of the hotel forms a private, secluded courtyard with direct access and views from a ground floor restaurant and via a grand stair from an upper level terrace. We were brought aboard in 2015 to maintain the existing courtyard, upper level terraces, and street side plantings. In May 2017, we developed a landscape plan for the terrace level gardens one level above the courtyard. In fall 2017, hotel management approached us with the desire to turn the courtyard level into an attractive extension of the interior space and oasis. Renovation included hardscape installation, low-profile lighting, and a formal water feature, which serves as a focal point in the landscape. We continue to provide full maintenance.

United Therapeutics, Unisphere Commercial Landscape Installation United Therapeutics is a biotechnology company located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

This building was designed to be net zero site energy by utilizing 3,000 solar panels, a quarter-mile underground earth labyrinth, and an atrium pool that acts as a heat sink.

The 210,000-square-foot, elliptical shaped “Unisphere” houses clinical operations for pulmonary disease, heart failure, and organ transplantation as well a virtual drug development lab.The project involved concrete flatwork throughout the site, caulking, all pavers, all landscape, soil, silva cells, and site amenities.

Bass Residence Craftsmanship – Design Build In 2017, an existing client brought us in to design a renovation of their rear landscape, which included the replacement of their 30-year old failing deck. The new design moves away from the previous curvilinear design and has a series of interconnected spaces.

IPE was the chosen material for the decking, fascia, top rails, and stair treads and risers.

Special attention was paid to details such as how the railings meet at the 45-degree corners, the patterning of the decking boards, the picture frame around the perimeter, the treatment of the stair treads to minimize exposed end grains, and the integrated lighting.

Similar detailing was applied to a wood screen enclosure around the clients' utilities and litter storage area.

The front entry to this magnificent home was boring, poorly designed, and did nothing to accent the beautiful architecture of the home. Our masons and landscape technicians transformed the antiquated entry into a stylish and functional arrival space. The entry features an exposed aggregate concrete driveway lined with a raised granite cobblestone border. The new travertine entry is a bold and welcoming space framed by square limestone planters. Lush, traditional, and colorful plantings enhance the newly designed driveway and arrival space where visitors truly feel welcomed.

The outdoor living space of this colonial-style Northern Virginia home was outdated, dysfunctional, and unappealing. Our role was to build a luxurious yet rustic outdoor kitchen and living space. The client desired "the feel of an indoor room, but outdoors."

They demanded to use the highest quality material available. The pavilion and arbor structure are built with rough sawn, solid cedar post and beams with exposed rafters.

The pavilion roof is standing seam metal. The entire space is enhanced with colorful perennials framed by boxwood hedges.

Distinction Awards McHale Landscape Design, Inc. McLean Residence Outdoor Living Area

The existing outdoor entertainment area was poorly build, disconnected, and lacked functional design elements. It featured a large multilevel deck, swimming pool, pool deck, pavilion, and minimal ornamental plantings. Our team installed a new, luxurious outdoor living space that featured a new travertine pool deck and stairs, thermal bluestone bordered lawn panel, a checkerboard terrace built from flagstone and precast material, a pergola swing, architectural columns and benches, and lush plantings throughout the backyard. The new outdoor living area is now truly an inviting space that welcomes luxurious outdoor living.

The existing backyard of this newly renovated Alexandria, Virginia, home lacked connectivity and a covered outdoor living space. Our role was to construct a luxurious outdoor living pavilion, new thermal bluestone pool deck and coping, an extensive under drainage system, and install lush lawn and colorful plantings throughout the property.

Additionally, we constructed an outdoor grilling station with a solid cedar skirt. The existing backyard has truly been transformed into a connected, functional, and luxurious outdoor living space.

Pinehurst Landscape Co. Lutherville Backyard Sanctuary Outdoor Living Area

The clients of this project had recently renovated/expanded their home and were looking to connect their home addition with the existing pool and rear yard. One of the challenges was expanding the pool deck without the finished product looking like patch work. New concrete pads were poured to widen both sides of the pool deck, and our mason spent a great deal of time pulling up and relaying existing stone so the pattern of new and old stone looked consistent. The two new terraces that were installed consisted of dry-laid bluestone and a gravel terrace with a bluestone border. A large pergola was constructed over the pool deck. The final step of construction was an extensive planting installation.

Modern Marvel Outdoor Gallery Outdoor Living Area – Design Build The clients wanted a multi-functional outdoor space to match their newly built, modern residence. The restricted space behind the residence was a challenge due to the grade change and required 12-foot concrete retaining wall. We broke up the monotony of the long narrow space and large retaining wall by dividing it into multiple outdoor rooms. The oversized thermal flagstone stepper path and lawn area open up into a larger select blue flagstone dining patio. A transitional space with a spectacular view from the heart of the house includes a custom-built copper fountain. The fire pit space is nestled between the screened porch and concrete retaining wall.

Backyard Playground and Hangout Outdoor Living Area – Design Build The client came to us wanting a swimming pool and a sports court. We took advantage of a significant slope and tucked a pool into the hill and proposed a huge waterfall and grotto. We proposed a waterfall rock that would span the far rear corner of the pool. We designed a wide beam on the pool so that all the rock could be placed and then capped with the 3-ton waterfall stone. We recommended installing synthetic turf over the entire 3,500 sf area of lawn. The turf has become a place where the client hosts practices for the kids soccer teams. We installed extensive lighting and planted low-maintenance plants.

Distinction Grand Awards Awards John Shorb Landscaping, Inc. A Residence in Bethesda Residential Maintenance

The lot for this contemporary home built in 1968 and updated with a new pool house in 2007 was chosen because of its natural setting. Favored with a deep front yard and backing up to a forested area, the grounds really takes prominence. Stands of mature trees frame the property, which is large enough to incorporate different outdoor rooms with distinctive personalities. The owners are art collectors and have a specific interest in outdoor sculptures that are incorporated throughout the garden. Ornamental trees, flowering shrubs and a plethora of grasses and perennials need to be tended to throughout the season.

This large, colonial-style home in McLean, Virginia, was undergoing a major renovation.

Our role as landscape contractor was to create an extraordinary backyard that features an oversized lap pool, a conservatory, and multilevel terrace and lawn areas. In the front yard, we constructed a new front entry and landscape that included a ceramic fountain, a boulder wall, and flagstone walkways. We planted the entire property to provide privacy, color, texture, and interest. The entire property has truly been transformed into a beautiful and functional outdoor space.

Reitberger Residence Total Residential Contracting – Design Build The landscape of this property relies heavily on grasses and low, simple plantings to enhance and balance the rectilinear geometry of the home's architecture. Large, glassy windows offer transparency in the architecture at important nodes, including the entry foyer and at corners. A similar approach was used in the landscape by highlighting the important nodes in the architecture of the home. Plantings were kept low around the foundation so as to not compete with the facade of the home, and complement the horizontality of the architecture. A consistent motif was employed around the sides and rear of the home, albeit with a varying plant pallette.

Stavish Project Total Residential Contracting – Design Build The overall objective of this project was to create a landscape that was conducive for multi-generational family gatherings with a style fitting of the historic surroundings and home's architecture. The master plan involved updating the front entry, side entrances, and rear entertaining areas to accommodate outdoor use and access for the family. We demolished an obsolete brink fountain and expanded upon the existing brick patio to create a complimentary flagstone patio with brick border to blend together. A tiered garden with a natural arched flagstone wall was added along with new symmetrical flagstone walkways flanking either side of the patio. Throughout the property, landscaping was added/updated in hues of blue and white.

Towlston Total Residential Contracting – Design Build The project consisted of an overhaul of the entire front and rear of the property. Included were a new driveway, entry walls with gated entrance, plantings, decorative fencing, generator, lighting, irrigation, drainage, and retaining and freestanding walls. A rear firepit with walls and patios was added, along with Bevolo gas lanterns and crushed gravel pathways throughout. The project also included an artificial turf play area.

Honorable Grand Mention AwardsAwards John Shorb Landscaping, Inc. A "Grande Dame" of Connecticut Avenue Commercial Maintenance

This historic building was constucted in 1927, opened as a rental in 1928, and converted to a co-op in 1967. The eclectic detailing of the building reflects elements of Gothic Revival Moorish and Spanish Colonial architecture. The building was designed with eight wings or tiers, allowing each apartment to have three exposures to admit sun and light and allows for extensive landscaping. The large roof deck includes two terra cotta gazebos with arched openings and majestic views of the city skyline. Highly visible from Connecticut avenue as well as from the owners' windows, our crews are always in sight and the landscaping must always look its best.

Brunswick Crossing Commercial Maintenance

Brunswick Crossing is a large HOA community located in Frederick County, Maryland. The design places a large emphasis on indoor-outdoor living, with an abundance of green spaces, tot lots and pocket parks, athletic courts and fields, a community garden, dog parks, pool, recreation center, numerous ponds, and a two-mile walking trail meandering through the woodlands. Our scope of work includes maintaining 200 acres of turf; 1,200+ trees; 1,250 annuals; 10,000+ perennials, grasses, and shrubs; and 700 cubic yards of mulch, as well as integrated pest management, pond maintenance, and sports field maintenance.

Lehnhoff’s Landscaping Fallston Property Craftsmanship – Design Build

The customer requested a space that would showcase materials and products that they sell at their landscape supply store. They wanted the “display” area to be a space that homeowners and contractors could be inspired by. The main focus was to incorporate as many elements as possible while still maintaining a cohesive feel of a unique outdoor living space. We decided to create a two-tiered outdoor display space, focusing on creating the feeling of multiple unique living spaces. We created a more modern pavilion with travertine flooring and cedar shiplap TV enclosure area, and we also envisioned a more rustic and intimate rear patio space with an abundance of natural stone and lush landscape.

Lehnhoff’s Landscaping Cockeysville Residence Craftsmanship – Design Build

The property had failing decks, a steeply sloped rear yard, and major drainage issues, but still had a lot of potential. We envisioned multiple spaces throughout the rear yard supported and connected with all natural elements. We overhauled the existing outdoor pavilion and added a copper roof, new trim, and ceiling. We constructed two new Ipe decks with stainless cable railing to overlook the rear of the property. We installed a several bluestone patios surrounded by local natural stone walls with natural stone capping. All natural stone was hand chiseled and shaped on site. By carrying the natural elements throughout the design of the property we were able to maintain continuity with the natural aesthetics of the backyard.

Calvert County Residence Front Residential Planting and Entranceway

The existing landscape and front entry were outdated and full of large mulch areas void of plants. We installed a planting mix of shade loving perennials, grasses, and shrubs under the street side woodland canopy. The driveway was realigned so that the new brick arrival court could be square to the house. The entire driveway was bordered with a brick detail that connected the circular driveway to the main entry and the detached garage. The boring foundation plantings were replaced with colorful roses and perennials. The front yard face lift is seamless and welcoming to all visitors while providing an eye-catching curb appeal.

Honorable Mention Awards Lehnhoff’s Landscaping Pocket Garden Outdoor Living Area

This project took place on a large farm/estate while the client was undergoing a renovation of the main house. The goal was to create a garden that balanced the old with the new. We decided the best way to meet the client’s needs would be to design a private pocket garden off the side of the home. One goal through our design process was to make the cedar fencing blend into the landscape while also functioning as a deer fence. Another design element was to install the natural stone patio with no defined edges so that it felt as if it was blending back into the landscape. We used a fair amount of fieldstone boulders to create level areas and define drainage swales.

Bass Residence Outdoor Living Area – Design Build The client had a desire to create a space for evening relaxation, dining, and entertaining. We developed a landscape plan, including a new deck, natural fieldstone boulder retaining wall and pathway, a pondless waterfall, new plantings, and selective tree removals. The rooms include a lounge area with fire pit, a dining area, a grilling area, and a space for the clients to relax. A pondless water feature was carefully positioned to be seen and heard from the various rooms on the deck. The use of natural materials, IPE and stone, throughout the landscape responds to the connection to the natural woodland landscape surrounding the site. The new plantings were carefully chosen to add a variety of colors and textures throughout various seasons

Our team successfully transformed a barren backyard into a beautiful, colorful, and functional outdoor living space. We replastered the pool and replaced the brick paver pool deck with silver travertine highlighted with a brick border and detail. A raised brick fire pit is capped with 2" bull nosed travertine. The outdoor kitchen pergola and the house pergola reflect Williamsburg style details to match the architecture of the home. The combination of silver travertine, flashed Calvert brick, and painted solid cedar woodwork is the perfect blend of quality material to enhance this beautiful outdoor entertaining space.

The client's objective was to build a series of comfortable walking areas filled with different terraces for entertaining and food production. The client wanted something that would engage all senses, including visual, smell, taste, and sound. The production gardens were to produce enough food to help feed the needy in the community. The gardens were also laid out for touring and education purposes. Plants were carefully selected for their various benefits, including ornamental value, pollinators, medicinal, fragrance, nutritional, and value to native wildlife.

McLean Sophisticated Entertainment Outdoor Living Area – Design Build For this project, we wanted to create a cohesive yet elegant backyard landscape that connects the dining and lounging spaces with the swimming pool and play court. A formal style pea gravel pathway was constructed to connect the deck, patio, and pavilion spaces. Stone steps with retaining wall planters connect the gravel pathway to the upper level deck with a sweeping staircase to the basketball court and driveway. All plant material on this project are white blooming or shades of green. Thermal blue flagstone treads top carderock stone veneers risers. With all these architectural features, lighting became just as important as the hardscapes and softscapes, carrying the beauty long into the night.

Honorable Mention Awards Great American Landscapes Turkey Run Estate Residential Maintenance – Design Build

This stately colonial sits on the corner of a quiet Virginia neighborhood on an acre of irrigated turf that adorned with natural boulders, stone walls, walkways, and paths. The components of the property include a diversified plant pallet, a large irrigated lawn, a ½-acre reforestation area, and a distinct hardscape area including a fireplace and outdoor kitchen for entertaining. The major renovation was the removal of three 70’ tulip poplars in front of the home, which have been replaced by a planting bed adorned with dogwoods surrounded by a host of evergreen and flowering shrubs. The second enhancement was planting a large bed of hypericum along the stretch of hillside that borders the rear perimeter of the property, leading to the reforestation area.

Bass Residence Total Residential Contracting – Design Build The client approached our team looking to improve the curb appeal of their Pikesville home.

In particular, the client wanted a healthy lawn as a foreground to their home. We began the process by developing a landscape plan for their front yard. The existing stone landscape wall inspired the use of natural stone outward into the new landscape. River jack stones, boulders, and additional fieldstone steppers were used throughout the front landscape renovation.
