DED Found in Saskatoon One case of Dutch elm disease (DED) has been confirmed in Saskatoon. An elm sample sent to the provincial lab by the City’s Urban Biological Services staff has come back positive for DED. This case is the third case of DED since 2015. In accordance with the City’s DED Response Plan, which requires immediate removal of all positive trees, crews will begin tomorrow removing the infected tree located in Leif Erickson Park in the Westmount neighbourhood. The surveillance and testing program continues to assess elm trees in this area and throughout the city. Based on the results of further testing and proximity of adjacent elm trees, there may be a requirement for further removals.

“This discovery of Dutch elm disease demonstrates that our ongoing surveillance and screening procedures work,” says Darren Crilly, Director of Parks. “Our response plan has been effective in ensuring we identify diseased trees early on, limiting the spread of the disease through rapid removal.” Saskatoon’s DED Response Plan requires: • Immediate removal of all positive trees • Disposal of infected trees at the City landfill • Sampling of adjacent trees • Surveillance and testing of private and public trees in the surrounding area with an intensive search for elm material and other sources of infection.

A Canadian Snow and Ice Management Standard

When the Landscape Ontario snow and Ice group was formed 25 years ago, it was clearly stated by Robert Kennaley (LO legal Counsel) that the industry needs a standard in order to deal with the significant risk management issues. Robert is an honorary member of Landscape Ontario and developed the LO standard contract.

A Canadian Snow and Ice Management Standard

“A standard is intended to help improve safety and generally establish reasonable methods to be followed by all impacted parties with responsibilities for snow and ice management. The impacted parties would include both the owner and the contractor.” I am pleased to announce that the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group) at the request of the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and Landscape Ontario accepted a proposal to undertake a scoping review process on the need and support for a Snow and Ice Standard. Thousands of contractors struggle with good intentions but without any industry guidance with respect to snow and ice management. In many cases contractors make up their own management systems, training, and methods in performing work. The lack of guidance makes it difficult for any contractor to explain their documents and methods, leading to difficulty in adequately defending any negligence claim made against them. The reality is that insurance costs have skyrocketed because of the lack of a standard indicating contractor, owner, procurement, material, and equipment requirements. In addition, the industry is exposed to environmental liability and has a desire to mitigate but is at the same time dealing with the liability and insurance cost issues driving oversalting. There is a need to address accessibility issues related to snow services. Currently there is no framework in place to have discussions that would improve the situation for persons with disabilities during snow and ice events.

A standard is intended to help improve safety and generally establish reasonable methods to be followed by all impacted parties with responsibilities for snow and ice management. The impacted parties would include both the owner and the contractor. The study on the desirability and support for a snow and ice management standard will start with interviews of industry stakeholders from across Canada, followed by a workshop involving Canadian stakeholders and experts. This research will culminate with a report which will help inform the need for a standard. There is an Advisory Committee to the CSA Group, which includes several members from Landscape Ontario. We expect a report to be produced by CSA Group no later than August of 2021. A positive decision would necessitate the formation of a Snow and Ice Management Committee. We expect approval for a Snow and Ice Management standard to be developed with completion in March 2022. The participants involved will be volunteering their time. The stakeholders, including their organizations provincially and federally will be looked upon for assistance, participation, contribution and/or funding. The current study cost is $20,000.00, which was funded through the CNLA Insurance Committees risk management budget. On behalf of the advisory council. Gerald Boot

Membership: More Valuable Than Ever! The pandemic has been a strange mix for our industry. Starting with apprehension of the initial lockdowns and after the slow start to 2020 it has been a very strong two seasons for the horticulture industry overall. This has brought many new challenges, from changes in operations to sector wide supply and labour shortages. So, despite the boom in demand and sales there have so many cost increases that many I have talked to do not feel they are doing as well as they can. While we continue to work on the more systemic issues like labour (from recruitment to retention to skills development) and standards (including the snow and ice standard – see page 8) there is one thing your association continues to excel at; saving members money!

Membership: More Valuable Than Ever! With the cost of everything rising, the ability to save money on everything from equipment to insurance to supplies is more important than ever. Amazingly, some members know this secret well. They pay for their membership many times over each year. Many more, still have not unlocked this cheat code for business, so I write this in hopes of helping just a few more members this year. Through our relationship with the national association (CNLA), Landscape Alberta members have access to a slate of great discount programs. These discounts are negotiated at the national level for the greatest impact. The philosophy is simple. The member must WIN with a discount they cannot get elsewhere. The supplier must WIN with access to a market they cannot get on their own. And lastly the association must WIN with a small residual or fee to help keep dues low. Here is a short summary of the current offerings; remember using one or two of these will often save you more than your entire membership every year.

“Through our relationship with the national association (CNLA), Landscape Alberta members have access to a slate of great discount programs. These discounts are negotiated at the national level for the greatest impact.”

The bonus value comes in a couple of ways. 1) You may be able to get similar savings on your own, but it will often take much more work than using the pre-negotiated discount. Time is money! 2) The more members that use the programs the more savings we will be able to negotiate. Visit https://cnla.ca/savings for all the up-to-date info. Let us save you some money, now more than ever.

• General Motors: Huge savings on select NEW GMC/ Chevrolet vehicles! • FCA Canada Inc. - Chrysler/ Dodge/Jeep/RAM: Our Fleet program is designed to save you thousands on NEW Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles • Cat®: Save up to $2,750 on the purchase of select CAT equipment and attachments • ECHO / Shindaiwa: Receive a 15% MSRP discount on any gas powered ECHO or Shindaiwa units and accessories. • Michelin: Special pricing on MICHELIN® Passenger & Light Truck, Truck, Agricultural, Compact Line, Tweel SSL and Earthmover Tires. • Esso / Petro Canada / Parkland Fuel: For savings on fuel purchases • Mark’s: 10% off the regular prices on the majority of Mark’s workwear clothing, footwear and safety accessories. • HortProtect Insurance: For members only program for both Commercial insurance and Health and life benefit insurance. • And more… GREEN FOR LIFE SUMMER 2021 • 11

COHA Connections: The Ornamental Sector’s One-Stop Research Website

“With the objective of being the sector’s one-stop-shop for all matters related to ornamental research, COHA Connections also features industry-related news features as well as an industry research database.”

Under the administration of the Canadian Ornamental Horticulture Alliance (COHA), beginning in 2008, Canada’s ornamental horticulture sector has significantly improved their access to federal government research funding through their participation in Agriculture and AgriFood Canada’s (AAFC) AgriScience Program: Cluster component. The AgriScience Program is under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, federal, provincial, territorial initiative. The most recent cluster (2018-23), entitled Accelerating Green Plant Innovation for Environmental and Economic Benefit, includes a total of 10 very diverse research initiatives. As well as meeting current federal government priorities, each of the research projects supports current industry concerns which are established through industry priority-setting sessions conducted at the start of the research application process. Ongoing research results are made available to the sector through COHA’s research website, COHA-ACHO Connections. Profile articles, highlighting the research work of each research project, are posted regularly. The summer 2021 profile article “Understanding how temperatures within plants affect their growth,” a research initiative of Dr. Peter Kevan (University of Guelph) is now available, along with numerous links to other related journal articles and more. With the objective of being the sector’s one-stop-shop for all matters related to ornamental research, COHA Connections also features industry-related news features as well as an industry research database. Research updates, presented by COHA’s research team as part of their annual webinar meeting, are posted to the website each year, and final reports are made available at the end of each five-year project cycle. The Canadian Ornamental Horticulture Alliance (COHA) is an alliance of the three primary organizations representing Canada’s ornamental horticulture value chain, including the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA), Flowers Canada Growers (FCG) and Quebec Vert.
