he Auckland Polo Club is delighted to present the BMW NZ Polo Open, 2021. The tournament kicks off the global polo calendar, and promises to be a brilliant social occasion. Despite the tumultuous events of the past year, we’re in a unique position to celebrate our homegrown polo talent, as the teams had the rare opportunity to pick from the country’s top players, all of whom are on New Zealand soil.

The 44th NZ Polo Open is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most competitive events, as players aim to win one of New Zealand’s oldest and most sought-after Polo trophies. This year, six teams will compete in the 12-goal tournament throughout the week, with the final held on our picturesque Auckland Polo Club grounds at Clevedon. There are many people involved in the BMW NZ Polo Open who I’d like to thank, particularly our naming sponsor, who I’m looking forward to watching in the BMW versus Polo Pony race. I’d also like to thank our other sponsors, competitors, patrons, grounds staff, umpires, supporters, club volunteers, event team and spectators, for making the NZ Polo Open the unmissable event it is.

Polo is a dynamic sport that requires rigorous training, quick strategic thinking and agile performance. Home turf 2021 is the perfect opportunity to check out NZ’s top polo talent

C

ovid may have robbed us of internationals but adversity is the mother of opportunity and the New Zealand natives have stepped up for the 2021 BMW New Zealand Polo Open. Many of our world-class players often forgo the chance to play themselves, choosing to put some coins in the family coffers by leasing their best horses to visiting international players for the NZ Open, but in the absence of the overseas contingent, local players are saddling up in a bid to get their name on the coveted trophy and showcase the talents of their equine athletes.

Many teams are still going through the selection process but here are some of the names you’ll see on the field come February. With a mix of our most experienced, highly rated international players and a lot of young up-and-coming talent taking the field, this may well be the most competitive NZ Open in some years.

VICTORY LAP Something in the Waikato water seems to produce an abundance of top-level polo players. Two of the finest are John Paul Clarkin and Kit Brooks from Cambridge’s Tiger Mystery Creek Team, who have confirmed they’ll be teaming up again in 2021, aiming to repeat their 2020 win. John Paul and Kit hold handicap ratings of seven and five goals respectively and, with a maximum combined team handicap level of 12 goals for this tournament, they’re going to be scouring the country for the best up-and-coming players to round out the team. The answer may be close to home as the Tiger Polo Academy, an incubator for upcoming polo talent, is based at Mystery Creek Polo Club. A place in this team would be a bucket list item for any young potential professional player. We’ll be watching to see who gets the nod and lines up beside these legends.

SERIOUS STEALTH Elsewhere in the tournament, John Paul Clarkin’s cousin, Thomas Hunt will be anchoring another team with his six-goal handicap. Thomas is very much the strong silent type, so he’s not saying which player he’s earmarked to add to the team led by patron Arthur Morgenstern in his ninth Open, and Clevedon local James Worker who will bring his trademark enthusiasm and highenergy play. Could there be an Australia-based Kiwi kicking their heels in isolation, perhaps? Thomas will be in this to win it and we can be certain he’ll be looking for a team mate with the skills to back up his incredibly fast, nimble style of play.

BIG SHOT One young player reaping the benefits of the overseas players’ absence is 25-year-old Andre Parrott. Andre’s father, Steve, is one of the country’s top Jonny producers of polo Coddington ponies. The Parrott ponies are much in demand and many can be found in the stables of top players across the globe.

With the international players out of the picture, Andre gets his pick of the ponies and a first chance at NZ Open glory. Andre plays out of the picturesque Waimai Polo Club in Te Akau, deep in the Waikato and has joined with two other Waimai club members Matt Pitts and Will Jackson to form the backbone of a very competitive, big hitting team. Charismatic Hawke’s Bay player Jonny Coddington completes the line-up, bringing years of international experience and a fivegoal handicap to the party.

Clevedon is the home of polo in Auckland and it’s also home to Hololio Polo Club, owned and run by the Jones family. Cousins Jeremy (JJ) and Henry Jones are no strangers to the NZ Open tournament and will this year be joined by Henry’s

younger brother Edward Elworthy Jones who will be making his NZ Open debut. It’s lucky the family have a wealth of superb horses at their disposal, as three players could use as many as eight or 10 ponies each in a single match at this level.

The Jones boys need a team captain who can keep up with them and top New Zealand international Glenn Sherriff decided that two weeks in a Christchurch hotel was a price worth paying to return from the UK and take up the challenge.

SAFETY For your safety, spectators must not be in the safety zone during play. Polo ponies and polo balls travel at speed and if either hits you, it hurts. The safety zone is the area within 10m of the boards (the sideboards outlining the field) and 30m from the back goal-line.

Only players, umpires, referees, goal judges, officials or stick holders may enter the safety zone while the game is in progress.
