Welcome

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Land Rover NZ Polo Open — the highlight of the New Zealand polo calendar. We hope you enjoy your day

T

he Land Rover NZ Polo Open is the absolute pinnacle event on this country’s polo calendar. In its 42-year history, it has evolved from grassroots polo to one of the most competitive tournaments in the Southern Hemisphere. We’re delighted to welcome some of the top international and New Zealand players, all of whom will be competing on fine Kiwi polo ponies. This year, six teams of high-goal players will compete in the 16-goal tournament throughout the week, with the final held on our prized Fisher Field at Clevedon. We are delighted to have partnered with Land Rover for the fourth year in a row and look forward to watching the Land Rover Versus Polo Pony race in what is a real test of horse power. I’d like to thank the many people involved in the Land Rover NZ Polo Open, from the sponsors, competitors, patrons, grounds staff, umpires, supporters, club volunteers, event team and spectators. Thank you for making the day one of the most enjoyable sporting events.

Welcome to the Land Rover New Zealand Polo Open. The New Zealand Polo Open, Australasia’s Premier Polo Championship, is the social and sporting event of Auckland’s summer and Land Rover is proud to offer its support to this prestigious event for the fourth year. Respected internationally and attracting quality players from around the globe, the New Zealand Polo Open joins a network of tournaments and clubs around the world, from India and Africa to the UK and Americas, supported by Land Rover, which has had a long association with the sport. This year, finals day of the tournament takes place on a Saturday for the first time in 42 years, and Land Rover will once again take pride of place amongst a family of supporters, offering the best view of Fisher Field from the elevated balcony of the Land Rover Clubhouse. The Land Rover team looks forward to being part of the 2019 event and toasting the best local and international Polo.

IMPORTANT The Land Rover NZ Polo Open is strictly a no BYO event. A day in the country watching great polo goes hand-in-hand with a glass of champagne or a beer, obtainable at the venue. If you think you’ll be indulging and staying on for the after-party, consider booking a return bus from $30 per person. Entry is by wristband only, received at the gate upon sighting your electronic ticket. Go to ITICKET. CO.NZ/EVENTS/2019/FEB/LAND-ROVERNZ-POLO-OPEN SAFETY For your safety, spectators must not be in the safety zone during play. Polo ponies and polo balls travel at speed and if either hits you, it hurts. The safety zone is the area within 10 metres of the boards (the sideboards outlining the field) and 30 metres from the back goal-line. Only players, umpires, referees, goal judges, officials or stick holders may enter the safety zone while the game is in progress. Land Rover NZ Polo Magazine 2019

IT’S A FACT

Polo has a long proud history. Here are some interesting things to know

» The pin-up for international polo is handsome Argentine Nacho Figueras. He’s been dubbed the David Beckham of polo. He’s also been modelling for Ralph Lauren since 2000 and is the face of the Polo fragrances.

» If you’re left-handed, as Prince William is, you’ll need to play polo with your right hand. It’s in the polo rules and has nothing to do with anyone being prejudiced against lefties. It’s all about safety.

» Ponies haven’t read the polo handbook, but they do know the rules. They may not know who won, but they anticipate the play and the best ponies follow the ball. If there’s a backhand shot made, they’ll automatically turn and give chase. They’ll also anticipate a ride-off by leaning into the other horse to take the rider out of the page 14

Land Rover NZ Polo Magazine 2019

line of the ball – as long as it’s not dangerous.

» Royals love a spot of polo. Princes William and Harry both play. Prince Charles called polo his “one great extravagance”. He met Camilla at a polo match and played polo three days before his marriage to Diana. » It’s not just royalty who enjoy a chukka or two. Clark Gable played, as did Winston Churchill, Spencer Tracy, Sylvester Stallone, Walt Disney, Tommy Lee Jones and even fictional hero Flash Gordon.

Even if you know nothing about polo, it’s exciting stuff. Knowing the rules makes it more so

A

t its most basic, a game of polo involves two teams riding horses up and down a polo field, trying to score as many goals as they can. The team with the most goals at the end wins. Like all good team games, scoring a goal is much easier said than done and there are many rules to ensure player and rider safety. So how hard is polo? Galloping up and down a field with the reins in one hand and leaning out of the saddle swinging a mallet to try to connect with a small plastic ball is every bit as skilled as it sounds. Before you can even pick up a mallet you’ve got to be a pretty good rider. So, it’s doubly difficult really. First things first, how many in a team? Four: players 1, 2, 3 and 4. Number 1 and 2 are forwards. Number 3 is like a centre in netball and is where you’ll find the best player. Number 4 is the goal defender. Each of these players has a handicap What exactly is a handicap? Just like golf, players play to a handicap. Learners start at -2 and 10 is the maximum rating. A 10 player would be an international superstar. There are less than 24 of them in the world. The individual handicaps are totted up and there you have the team handicap. The team handicap of all New Zealand Polo Open teams is 16. What about the horses? They’re called ponies. While they are technically horses because they stand

balls

at more than 14.5 hands high (that’s a way of measuring horses, anything under is a pony and over is a horse), they are known as ponies. Don’t ask – it’s a polo quirk. Yes, but how many are there? Each player will have at least four ponies for a game. They’re expected to run like Usain Bolt in the 100-metre final, so get tired quickly. These ponies can reach speeds up to 55km per hour. Where do you play? On a polo field measuring 274m long by 200m wide, or a handful of football pitches combined. How long is a game? Fast and furious and much shorter than a World Cup football match. There are between four and six seven-minute periods called chukkas. How does it start? There are two mounted umpires and one will throw the ball into play in the middle of the field. They’ll repeat this after each goal and at the start of each chukka. How big are the goal posts? 7.3m wide. They’re also collapsible for safety’s sake. Each time a goal is scored, teams switch goal ends. How can eight galloping ponies not trip over each other? It’s all down to the strict rules. There is something called ‘right of way’. This refers to the line in which the ball is travelling. The player who last hit the ball has right of way and no player can cross the line in front of that player unless there’s no danger to pony or rider. What’s fouling? If a pony crosses a player with right of way in a dangerous manner, a foul is called. But why are the riders and ponies pushing each other? It’s called riding off and it is all part of the thrill of the game. It can’t be done at a dangerous angle – that’s also fouling.

F

rom the beginning, it was fairly obvious Marcus Beresford was going to play polo. His great-grandfather, grandfather and father all played. So not playing was really not on the agenda growing up in Gloucestershire and in County Waterford, Ireland. His grandfather was a trailblazer and pioneer of Irish polo. “He was the captain of the all-Ireland Polo Team and always took a team of horses over to compete in the Queen’s Cup in Great Windsor Park and the Gold Cup in Midhurst West Sussex. He won the Gold Cup with the Duke of Edinburgh” says Marcus from the new SO/ Auckland hotel. Beresford, a two-goaler, is currently living at Clevedon. He first came to New Zealand 11 years ago and fell in love with the place. He doesn’t travel to play polo anymore, but freely admits polo is indeed like having a passport to the world, as Winston Churchill was famously quoted as saying. “The people you meet and the horses make it worthwhile,” says Marcus. The most difficult thing about the game is “getting well-mounted”. Horses make up about 80 per cent of the game,” he adds.

Which is why, after an early morning run, he checks in on his horses to see what they need. In the polo season, the game is all-consuming. “During the week, we’ll have practise games and the real thing on the weekend.” And if he wasn’t spending so much energy on the field? He’d be fishing.

Fashion

Meet the fashion judges The style heavyweights are presiding over this year’s Fashion Quarterly Fashion on the Field competition. Here’s how to impress them

Wilhelmina Shrimpton The sartorially switched-on Newshub television reporter always hits the right note in the fashion stakes.

THE DRESS CODE FOR POLO IS VERY DIFFERENT TO THE RACES. HOW WOULD YOU SUM IT UP?

Wilhelmina The polo has a more relaxed vibe, but is no less chic than the races. Forget traditional structured outfits, and opt for a floaty and romantic option instead. You can definitely push the boundaries. Try a pair of beautiful wide leg pants or a jumpsuit. Remember headpieces are a no-no, but a big wide brimmed hat would most definitely make the cut. When it comes to the colour palette think light and summery hues ... I always imagine what I’d wear to a party in the Hamptons. Crisp whites and beige tones are always my go-to.

Zoe There’s a lot more freedom – and I think fun – with a polo dress code. Whereas race wear has longstanding rules and traditions – think of Derby Day black and white, accessories like fascinators – whereas the polo is very much open to personal style and interpretation. My all-time favourite polo outfit is still Chloe Sevigny in a cream Chloe short suit at the Manhattan Polo Classic in 2009.

Zoe Walker Ahwa

Murray Crane

As editor of Fashion Quarterly, there’s not much Zoe doesn’t know about her specialist subject.

Founder of menswear label Crane Brothers, Murray pretty much spends his life in a suit. Bespoke suiting is a particular passion of his.

Murray I think it is more relaxed, but that doesn’t mean dressing too casually. It is still a great excuse to dress up and feel great. WHAT’S GOING TO GET YOUR ATTENTION ON THE DAY?

Wilhelmina People breaking away from tradition. Something like a slick suit, dramatic sleeves and of course beautiful accessories. A pair of stand-out shoes and a bag could be enough to sway me in your favour. Zoe Anyone who looks polished and comfortable – there’s nothing worse than seeing someone wearing a heavy fabric, sweating profusely. The polo is a lot of fun, so you want to feel and look carefree. I expect to see lots of the floaty, bohemian style dresses and blouses that are popular at the moment. With so many cool hats around right now, I’m looking forward to seeing how people stay sun smart – the height of chic!

Murray I would generally look for anyone who has made an effort. A good outfit is the sum of many parts and finding the right balance.

ANYTHING THAT’S INSTANT DISQUALIFICATION FOR YOU?

Wilhelmina The polo is all about a fresh and crisp look, so piling on too much makeup would definitely be a deal breaker. Also, if anyone happens to wear race-day headwear.

Zoe I’m not a fan of stilettos at the polo.

Murray Polo shirts with popped collars, nudity and Jandals – just about anything else goes. PERSONAL ESSENTIALS ON THE DAY?

Wilhelmina A portable phone charger, a good sunscreen, a travelsized perfume and a comfortable but stylish pair of wedges – perfect for stomping those divots.

Zoe A lightweight dress, sunglasses so I can see the action, sunscreen with a high SPF, and a glass of Veuve.

Murray Aesop Immediate Moisture Facial Hydrosol, Protective Body Lotion and Lip Balm. Lots of water. Land Rover NZ Polo Magazine 2019

Fashion

Spectator fashion Polo has its own dress code. You’ll find when you take your eyes off the field and into the crowd that they are every bit as well turned-out as the ponies

A

s dress codes go, the one for polo is relatively simple and rule-free. Well, almost. Because watching the Land Rover NZ Polo Open is, after all, a day in the country on the weekend – quite literally. And who wears a business suit on the weekend? Okay, maybe John Campbell. But for the most part, dress for a stylishly relaxed summer’s day and you won’t go wrong. Ladies, no stilettos. You’re watching horses on a field and walking on grass. Spike heels and grass do not go together. Wedges, mid-height solid heels or flat sandals are far better options. Relaxed, but not too much. Best leave the denim cut-offs for the beach. Likewise Jandals. When we say relaxed we don’t mean Piha.

Leave the office behind. A power dress designed for important board meetings is not the vibe. Instead, floaty, summer dresses are the ticket, or wide-legged jumpsuits. Ditto a crisp cotton shirt tucked into a skirt. Probably best not hemmed too short as you’ll need to play to the conditions. Who knows if a summer breeze will come along? The natural look is good. Kim Kardashian levels of contouring are not the intention. Fresh skin and natural beauty is good. A pretty lip, flushed cheeks and loosely waved hair is ideal. Colour is your friend. It’s summer. Let loose with colour, a print or choose crisp white. Dress to the conditions. Sun hats are good. Sunscreen is nonnegotiable.

MEN The same guidelines of classy casual go for men. Dress for the environment – you’re off duty. A banker’s suit will make you look like a fish out of water. Preppy chinos and a relaxed blazer are much better bets. It’s polo – bust out the polo shirt. When in Rome... Bonus points for a colourful polo. The long and the short of it. A pair of shorts teamed with a cotton or linen shirt (or a polo) are just as acceptable as chinos. Sock-free. Loafers are the most commonly worn shoe style, but don’t even think about teaming them with visible socks. Bad, bad, bad. Save the socks to wear with your perfectly acceptable RM Williams boots.

What’s a failsafe outfit for the polo? Where to start! This season I’m loving delicate layers, gorgeous sleeve details, large bows and twopiece sets. I am a girl who loves colour and there is definitely room for pops of it at the polo, but a failsafe option would be keeping to the softer pastels, whites, creams or linen. Get that bright hit with lipstick or a statement shoe. What advice would you give for a first-time polo attendee? Watch your champagne intake and take the time to learn a bit about the game before you go. It’s easy to let the day get away on you with all the socialising and people watching, but I would urge you to take time to enjoy watching the polo.

Holly Lindsey wears a Thurley dress from Superette

Frill seeker

Where do you stand on heels at the polo? I wouldn’t want to spend the day balancing on the grass trying not HOLLY’S to fall over in front of TIP thousands of spectators. So Watch your heels are simply a no. A champagne intake wedge or a thick heel if you and take the time to prefer the height, but there learn a bit about the are few events of this nature game before you go where a stylish flat is perfectly acceptable and this is a great excuse to add a new pair of flats to your collection.

A word with Land Rover NZ Polo Open event ambassador Holly Lindsey

“I

don’t have a ring on my finger and I don’t own a home, but I have an extensive heel collection, a love for espresso martinis and a group of the most amazing girlfriends in their 30s who inspire me daily.” So says Holly Lindsey, the 30-something behind Hollyestelle blog. She took to polo like an influencer to selfies when a friend took her along to the Land Rover NZ Polo

page 24

Land Rover NZ Polo Magazine 2019

Open. She stomped divots, drank champagne and sat in a camping chair enthralled by both the polo and the fashion. “This event brings together a mix of people, the polo community and those out for a new social experience,” she says. So, inspired by what she saw, she took a lesson, but has learned she sits too upright on the ponies. Best stick to being a fashion star Holly.

Are there ever days where you hate everything in your wardrobe and, if so, what do you end up wearing? I wouldn’t say there is anything I hate in my wardrobe, I am good at donating to charity every six months, so I try and keep my wardrobe to pieces I actually wear. But I do get behind on my ironing so there are definitely days where I have nothing to wear as it’s all backed up in that pile. When that happens I tend to wear high-waisted jeans, a silk singlet, a blazer and a high pair of stilettos – the one thing that can pull together the most average of outfits.

The relationship between Semco and Pacific Direct Line (PDL) was forged on a polo field many years ago, and the business arrangement continues today with another generation now at the helm both on and off the field. 2019 Teams TEAM PROFILE

Semco PDL

HARRY SEMENOFF JNR Handicap 0 goals 2019 sees Junior make his third attempt at realising his late father’s dream of seeing the Semco PDL name on the Land Rover NZ Open trophy. The stellar team he has put together could well be the one that pulls off the big win. A Semco PDL victory would be emotion charged and one heck of a party would follow.

THOMAS HUNT

CHRIS MACKENZIE

HENRY JONES

Handicap 6 goals This prodigiously talented Kiwi international player makes the seemingly impossible look easy and gets the best out of every pony he plays. Thomas had three NZ Open wins under his belt before he was aged 25 and his name is on a wealth of trophies on both sides of the Tasman and in the UK. The ultimate cool customer on and off the field.

Handicap 7 goals South African Chris was spotted by a top English team as a 16-year-old and hasn’t looked back since. He has twice been awarded the Most Valuable Player in the prestigious Coronation Cup at the Royal Polo Club, Guards in Windsor Park, and is virtually on first name terms with the Queen as a result. Humble and unassuming, but a serious talent.

Handicap 3 goals Clevedon is a great breeding ground for international polo players, Henry being yet another. This tall, athletic player is affectionately known as Sid the Sloth – ironically, because he’s anything but. Henry has the advantage of riding his father Nick’s exceptional string of ponies, many destined for international stardom themselves.

JOHN PAUL CLARKIN

NINA CLARKIN

KIT BROOKS

ETHAN WADE

Handicap 7 goals New Zealand’s most experienced, highest handicapped and undoubtedly tallest player, JP, as he’s known, is a maestro with the mallet. He’s captain of the NZ polo team and has won this tournament no fewer than nine times, but will still be hungry for a tenth win. For the Kiwi summer, he’s based at the family’s polo farm in Waikato’s Mystery Creek where he brings on his next generation of equine superstars.

Handicap 4 goals Don’t be fooled by her delicate looks, this elegant English rose is an absolute polo powerhouse. The world’s highest rated female player, Nina is blazing a trail for women in polo, notching up firsts, including winning the British Open, and the Argentine Women’s Open in 2017. Nina has two young children with husband and teammate JP, making a formidable Clarkin family team seem a future inevitability.

Handicap 5 goals Known for relentless energy and skill on the field, Cambridge-based Kit is much in demand at tournaments both here and internationally. He’s worn the Silver Fern numerous times, representing New Zealand in test matches at home and overseas. Kit has a great affinity with his horses and an outstanding record in retraining racehorses for polo. Look forward to some crowdpleasing action from this gutsy, committed player.

Handicap 0 goals This is 17-year-old Ethan’s debut in the NZ Open and, for the young Clevedon local, it’s a dream come true. He has grown up in a prolific polo family with his father and two uncles being seasoned professionals. Ethan is lucky to have access to father Jonny’s string of equine athletes for this tournament, but is most excited about playing his pony Grace, who he has trained himself. He will be giving his cool-headed all.

Rodd & Gunn

MARCUS BERESFORD

JACK RICHARDSON

ASH READER

NICK KEYTE

Handicap 2 goals From one of Ireland’s oldest polo playing families Marcus has represented his country in several international test matches. He now calls New Zealand home, however, and happily resides in Clevedon where he manages the polo barn of businessman and polo player, Ross George. Outside of polo, many are surprised to learn that Marcus is a great cook and is single.

Handicap 7 goals This tall and athletic Englishman started playing polo at the age of six through his pony club. He played in his first adult tournament aged 10 and turned pro at the tender age of 17. In 2014 Jack was voted Best English Young Player and has continued to gather awards and trophies since. Jack will be hoping to captain the Rodd & Gunn team of exciting young players to glory.

Handicap 3 goals Ash has travelled his ponies from his South Island home at Kaikoura, where he works in the family fishing business, to contest the NZ Open. He’s had one previous attempt at this trophy and is champing at the bit to get on the field as part of this team. A NZ Open win would no doubt eclipse his victory in the Bluff Under 30s Oyster Shucking competition two years ago.

Handicap 4 goals One of NZ polo’s most popular players, Nick divides his time between his polo operation in Queensland and Auckland, where he manages the van den Brink family’s large stable. A winner of the Australian Open and the Australian Gold Cup, Nick lists winning the latter as a highlight riding with cousin Thomas Hunt and partner and top Aussie female player Indi Bennetto.

Peroni

JAMES WORKER

CRAIG WILSON

TOMMY WILSON

LACHIE GILMORE

Handicap 2 goals Clevedon local James is playing in his third NZ Open this year and he’s particularly excited to take to the field on his favourite home-bred ponies. He’s known for his infectious smile, which will be set off handsomely by the shirts Peroni has commissioned from top designer Samuel Hickey especially for this event. Great style and great talent combine in this team.

Handicap 6 goals The younger of the two Wilson brothers playing in this team, Craig has achieved one of the highest polo handicaps in New Zealand, while also having played representative rugby for Waikato. Craig is known for the quality of his ponies, one of whom was crowned Best Playing Pony at the Argentine Open, the pinnacle of achievement for polo pony producers globally.

Handicap 5 goals Tommy is one of New Zealand’s most capped international players. After many years spent on the international circuit, he’s now largely confining his play to Australasia to concentrate on polo pony breeding at home in the Waikato. Tommy’s wise head and vast experience will be invaluable to this exciting team. Watch a master strategist at work.

Handicap 2 goals Known as Australia’s ‘Fresh Prince of Polo’, this 18-year-old is heading for stardom. It’s not surprising, because he is the son of Glen Gilmore, captain of the Australian team for more than a decade. Lachie became the youngest player to represent his country when selected for the World Cup team in 2017. Polo fans will be out in force to see what this wunderkind can do.

ARTHUR MORGENSTERN Handicap 0 goals When Arthur started playing at age 35, only a year after first riding a horse, he was told he’d never win the NZ Open. Always one to rise to a challenge, he’s since played the Open eight times, winning on five of those occasions. Arthur has gathered an impressive team around him for this attempt to ensure the Open trophy sits on the Morgenstern mantelpiece.

FACUNDO FERNANDEZ LLORENTE Handicap 7 goals Facu is yet another of Argentina’s seemingly endless output of naturally gifted polo players. It takes a lot to excite the polo elite in Argentina, but this young player has done just that. Facu comes here fresh from playing in the Argentine Open, a goal only a tiny percentage of players will ever achieve. Look forward to some jaw-dropping fast play from this uber talent.

DEAN FULLERTON

MATIAS TORRES ZAVALATA Handicap 7 goals Matias is another Argentinean superstar making the 2019 NZ Open lineup one of the best for many years. A winner and Most Valuable Player at the 2017 US Open, amongst his many achievements worldwide, Matias is here for this tournament and to play for Argentina against New Zealand in the Annual Kihikihi International test match.

Handicap 2 goals This 20-year-old Waikato lad will be over the moon at securing a spot in this team for his debut NZ Open appearance. A great all-round sportsman who has played rugby in Waikato age group teams, Dean’s real passion is polo. He’s already worn the Silver Fern, representing New Zealand in the USA, but this is Dean’s break into the big time and he’ll seize the opportunity.

JEREMY JONES

GLENN SHERRIFF

PACO O’DWYER

Handicap 2 goals Clevedon born and bred Jeremy is an amateur player who had the skills to pursue a career in polo, but instead settled for a less transient life as a property developer, enabling him to enjoy time with his wife and three young daughters. JJ is a veteran of two previous NZ Open finals but a win is proving elusive. Could 2019 be the year?

Handicap 5 goals Gisborne lad Glenn epitomises the ‘she’ll be right’ understated Kiwi way. Undaunted by any opposition, Glenn has enjoyed a phenomenal run in recent English polo seasons, including winning the prestigious Duke of Wellington trophy, which he received from the Queen. He’s a regular fixture in the NZ team and is one of the most popular players on the circuit.

Handicap 6 goals This gentle, unassuming Argentinean is something of a smiling assassin. Competitors will know not to underestimate Paco and his uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time. He has represented Argentina internationally, but cut his high goal polo teeth here in New Zealand over several summers, so we’re happy to consider him one of our own.

TOMMY MARIN MORENO Handicap 3 goals The 2019 NZ Open field boasts an abundance of young polo talents, Tommy being one of them. The latest polo prodigy from a long line of Marin Moreno family players, Tommy came to play here last summer and liked it so much he’s back to play in the big league. This 19year-old will bring value way above his three goal handicap to this team.
