AFTER 5: THE ART OF BUYING ART 5th September

Buying art is an art form of its own. With so many variations of art and artists to choose from, one can easily be overwhelmed. Should you get the impressionist painting or the black and white street photography piece? Or maybe a modern art sculpture? Village Market held an After 5 workshop hosted by art experts William Ndwiga and Margaretta Gacheru. They shared key insights on what to look for when buying art and how to become an art collector. Some key questions to guide the aspiring collector – does it ignite a fire inside you every time you look at it? Did you get value for money? Does it look good in your space? Who is the artist and what inspires them? To attend our next After 5 workshop, RSVP to winnie@villagemarket-kenya.com

ASEAN FESTIVAL 8th September

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Festival took place in September at the Village Market Food Court. In this fourth instalment of the event, Village Market customers got to experience Southeast Asia in all its glory. In his opening remarks, Philippine Ambassador Alex G. Chua appreciated the benefits of bridging gaps among people through culture. The day-long festivities saw a variety of performances from the four ASEAN missions in Nairobi with performances of traditional and modern dances from the Philippines, Indonesian and Malaysia. Audiences also enjoyed a cultural re-enactment of a traditional Malaysian wedding, live cooking demonstrations from three Thai chefs exclusively flown from Thailand and the victory drum performance of the Thai Peacekeepers in the UN Mission in South Sudan. Each mission offered native delicacies such as chicken adobo, pad Thai, nasi lemak and chicken satay, which the public heartily sampled. The day culminated in a colourful fashion show involving all ASEAN missions and featuring different traditional attires. The proudly Filipino Imbento band played live musical numbers and sustained a high tempo to which the audience heartily danced to. There were periodic raffle draws with each Mission offering a grand prize, including a round-trip business class ticket to Manila courtesy of Oman Air, and a round-trip ticket to Bali. The ASEAN-Nairobi Committee aims to hold the event every September, one month from the ASEAN day celebration in August. See you at the next one!

Village SCENE AWARDS GALORE! 3rd August

The inaugural East FM Star Awards 2019 took place in August to recognise and award outstanding individuals and business entities. centre updates UNDER THE SEA Toddler Art Class

Nothing unleashes a child’s creativity quite like art. Under the Sea’s popular toddler art class encourages your budding Picasso to explore their sense of artistic possibility. This early-learning art class gives toddlers aged six months to three years a fun introduction to discerning textures, colours and shapes, as well as counting and more. In the class, as the toddlers manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colours, they learn the basics of math. When the children experiment with materials, they dabble in science. Most

importantly, the children are bound to feel good while creating, since art helps boost their self-confidence. We know it can be tricky providing your toddler with new and exciting hands-on arts activities at home. As busy parents, it can be a struggle to figure out art ideas and it’s not always fun to clean up a toddler’s art mess. For the perfect toddler art-fix, visit Under the Sea on the fourth floor of the new wing, every Monday from 11am to 12pm.

breast AWARE

EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES

B

reast cancer is one of the most common cancers in East Africa, where its mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Lately, it is increasingly affecting young women in their thirties. On average, women develop breast cancer at a younger age in Sub-Saharan Africa than in the West. Most often these cancers are detected very late when treatment options become limited, expensive and often ineffective. In order to improve breast cancer outcomes and survival, early detection is critical.

WHAT IS BREAST CANCER? Breast cancer starts when cells in breast tissue begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumour that can often be seen on an x-ray (mammogram) or felt as a lump. The tumour is malignant (cancer) if the cells can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs most commonly in women, but men can get breast cancer too.

SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER Breast cancer can have various symptoms. You should see your doctor if you notice any of the following: • A lump or swelling in either of your breasts or armpits • A change in the size or shape of one or both breasts • A discharge from either of your nipples, which may be streaked with blood • Dimpling on the skin of your breasts • A rash on or around your nipple • A change in the appearance of your nipple, such as becoming sunken into your breast. Very often breast cancer may not cause any pain, leading many people to disregard their other symptoms. Therefore, it is vitally important to know what is normal for you and have any changes checked by your doctor at the breast clinic.

RISKS OF BREAST CANCER

EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES

Although the exact causes are not fully understood, there are certain factors known to increase the risk of breast cancer. These include: • Gender – being female • Age – the risk increases as you get older • A family history of breast cancer • A previous diagnosis of breast cancer or benign breast disease • Increased breast density • Being overweight or obese • Drinking alcohol excessively.

Breast cancer in its early stage is easier to treat and is more likely to be cured. It is important to attend one-stop breast clinics in order to be fully assessed, especially when you find new symptoms or changes in your breast. Early detection often reduces the need for breast amputation (mastectomy) and chemotherapy, with breast conserving treatment more widely available. Almost all women diagnosed with breast cancer at the earliest possible stage survive for at least five years after diagnosis and are more likely to be cured compared with 3 in 20 women whose disease is diagnosed at its latest stage.

ONE-STOP CLINIC From 1st October, MP Shah Hospital will be running a new specialist breast service, under Dr Marek Ostrowski, a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon from the UK. He specialises in the diagnosis and management of all aspects of breast problems, both benign and malignant in women and men. He takes a multi-disciplinary approach and applies oncoplastic techniques to achieve the best possible outcome in breast cancer surgery, oncological safety and aesthetic appearance. The one-stop breast clinics will be running at Village Market and the main hospital in Parklands.

12

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE ONE-STOP CLINIC At the clinic, you will see the breast consultant and a nurse. They will ask if you have had any breast problems before and whether you have a family history of cancer. The specialist will examine your breasts and armpits and explain which tests you need. These may include: • Mammogram: uses low-energy, x-rays to identify abnormalities in the breast. It is the most important breast-screening tool as it identifies early signs of breast cancer, micro-calcifications and small lesions. Regular mammograms are the most effective tests for detecting breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt as lumpw • Breast Ultrasound: uses high frequency sound waves to assess the size and shape of breast lumps and determine whether they could be tumorous growths or fluid filled cysts

• Ultrasound of the lymph nodes in the armpit • Biopsy: to obtain a sample of breast tissue. October is breast cancer awareness month. Be breast aware because early detection saves lives.

Damba and Damulira 24 October – 4 November Rooftop Gallery

Damba's artistic themes feature the challenges of the society and the environment he lives in. His preferred themes are culture, politics, economics and the effects of globalization. He also takes a keen interest in people, their activities and opinions, their perceived social status and their political hopelessness. Some of Damba’s work also highlights the fate of our wildlife and the state of the natural world. Line and colour are common constituents of all art but the real essence for Dambas is the relevance of the statement his work makes. Damulira's paintings have an unfocused quality to them, giving them an impressionistic feel. His characters are often faceless and pushed to the edge of the canvas. Even then, he insists that his work is not political. Damulira takes a keen interest in ordinary African life especially gatherings. Employing oil on canvas, he uses his technique to create a particular atmosphere and a universal feel that draws in the viewer, leaving them free to interpret his work as they please. Free entry!

SHIFAZ VETERINARY CLINIC In 1995, Shifaz Veterinary Clinic opened at Village Market, to meet the rising demand for veterinary pet care within Nairobi’s diplomatic district. Having been in practice for more than 33 years, the outlet’s proprietor, Dr Zulfikar Moshinali, has had the honour of treating and caring for the neighbourhood’s pets.

Dr Zulfikar estimates that he has treated more than 15,000 pets. He is one of a small pool of veterinary doctors who have specialised in pet care in the country. Given his vast experience, he often cautions pet owners to avoid taking their pets to quacks, just to save on the cost of caring for their pet.

This undertaking has not been limited to cats and dogs, as one may be quick to assume. His clients have included some very interesting creatures including chameleons, grasshoppers, scorpions and even snakes. Even then, nothing is too difficult for the good vet. When called upon to attend to a new patient, he has learnt to expect some surprises.

To offer more comprehensive services to his clients, Shifaz Veterinary Clinic now includes a pet food and pet accessories store. The pet food section carries leading brands such as Royal Canine, Next Guard, Skinners, Pedigree, Reflex and Whiskers. In the pet accessories section, one can find high quality leashes, harnesses, collars, toys, treats, shampoos, vitamins and minerals.

“Of course these lovely animals offer much needed companionship and emotional support to their owners,” Dr Zulfikar notes. “In return, they deserve only the best and most professional care.” Shifaz Veterinary Clinic offers consultation, vaccination, treatment, laboratory and x-ray services for pets. The fully kitted clinic comes complete with a reception area, a triage and a theatre, for both major and minor operations. Also included in the clinic’s offering is a grooming service. Pets can have their fur washed, trimmed and blow dried, and even get their teeth cleaned. “When you’ve treated pets for so long, the pets and their owners are more like friends,” says Dr Zulfikar. “It’s like being the family doctor. It has very little to do with money and more about building a relationship. I become involved in the pet’s wellbeing as well as that of the pet’s owner. When a pet falls sick, it’s very difficult for its owner to know what is wrong, and that gives many owners a lot of anxiety. For so many years, I have been on call at every hour of the day and night.”

20

Over the years, Shifaz Veterinary Clinic has evolved into a family business. Dr Zulfikar’s daughters, Jamila and Zahra, have followed in his footsteps. At the clinic’s reception, the proud father displays his daughter’s degrees from the University of Nairobi. And proudly manning the pet store is his wife Fatema. Asked what advice he would give all pet owners, Dr Zulfikar responds: “treat your pets just like you would your child. Feed them, have them vaccinated and keep them clean, so that they are free from ticks and fleas. Take short cuts and you’ll have a very sick pet in your hands.” As a parting short, the good vet offers some words of wisdom: “pets are emotional. They cry, they express joy and they are very intelligent. Respect your pets and treat them as you would treat a fellow human being.”
