am pleased to introduce the 2018-19 edition of the Uganda Hotel Guide, the official publication of the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association.

This recognition is promising for us as an association – and for the country as a whole – as it proves Uganda can compete with her neighbours to be among the best destinations on the continent. This can only be made possible by ensuring that visitors to Uganda receive the quality accommodation and warm hospitality that they deserve when exploring what the ‘Pearl of Africa’ has to offer.

This publication highlights the big steps being made in the hospitality industry in Uganda, with new hotels opening, existing hotels undergoing refurbishment and the recent star-grading programme that we introduced to let visitors easily recognise the commitment of the sector to providing outstanding service and accommodation.

These actions have helped contribute to the everimproving hospitality and tourism sector, but there is always more to be done and UHOA is proud to be at the forefront of these developments, alongside industry stakeholders, tour operators, associations and organisations, dedicated to improving and promoting tourism in Uganda.

elcome to the latest edition of the Uganda Hotel Guide 2018-19.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the latest edition of the Uganda Hotel Guide 2018-2019, the official publication of the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association. We have had a very successful year and UHOA continues to grow from strength to strength, venturing into new territories.

This year we have witnessed new developments like the opening of the new five-star Pearl of Africa Hotel as well new name-brand hotels like the Golden Tulip setting up shop in Kampala. We also hosted our fifth annual hotel expo, bringing on board many big partners like Stanbic and Equity Bank among others. We have also had numerous programmes and meetings for our members as well as a host of activities that have placed UHOA firmly in the spotlight as well as establishing UHOA as the strongest private-sector association in Uganda’s tourism sector.

After the success of the last publication and a strong year for UHOA, we are pleased to report that our membership continues to grow. With currently over 500 properties

across the country joining us in our mission to promote Uganda as a high-end tourism destination and to maintain high standards throughout the industry, UHOA is without a doubt a force to reckon with.

FIVE-STAR We are also proud to note that the hotel grading system that was introduced in 2015 has been very successful, with more than 60 properties across Uganda rated as two-star or above and five properties achieving the top grading of five-star. We are proud that these properties are working hard to provide quality accommodation for visitors to our wonderful country and we congratulate each and every hotel that now has an official star rating.

We envision that these star ratings will keep growing as we continue to assess and grade new and existing properties across Uganda, from international hotels in Kampala to homely guesthouses in upcountry destinations.

Beyond the immediate attractions of Kampala, the cities of Entebbe and Jinja are within easy reach.

Located either side of the capital, these lakeside towns have their own unique charm and historical character.

Both Entebbe and Jinja are excellent locations for business trips as well as for weekend retreats.

Entebbe has a peaceful atmosphere that makes for the perfect relaxed getaway; and with Uganda’s International Airport located here, it’s the ideal stopover for arriving and departing visitors. Entebbe has a wide range of accommodation to suit every budget, from modern luxury hotels to authentic colonial-style properties.

KAMPALA Kampala, the nation’s capital, is one of the fastest-growing cities in East Africa. Situated close to Africa’s

This comes as no surprise, as Uganda is home to such wonderful sights as the source of the White Nile, the Rift Valley and fine wildlife parks such as Murchison Falls and Bwindi Impenetrable, as well as mighty waterfalls and some of the world’s most scenic lakes. It also contains the largest population of mountain gorillas anywhere on the planet; and, with over 1,000 recorded bird species, it’s the world’s number one location for birdwatching.

largest lake – Lake Victoria – and surrounded by rolling hills and numerous trees, the city features historical buildings as well as urban skyscrapers. There is a choice of magnificent hotels in the area to accommodate the many visitors. Those hotels listed as five-star are the Kampala Serena, the Sheraton Kampala and the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort – three of the best hotels in Africa.

s Uganda’s tourism sector continues to grow, there has never been a better choice of things to see and do as well as places to stay. More airlines are flying visitors to Uganda from all over the world, while an increasing number of hotels open every year.

By contrast, Jinja has fewer hotels but still offers plenty of choice. Jinja is Uganda’s lakeside town, known for such adrenalin-fuelled activities as white water rafting and bungee jumping.

Jinja contains no big five-star properties.

Its hotels are comparatively modest in size and generally aimed at the mid-market sector in this economically important area.

Those venturing beyond the triangle of Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja will have no trouble finding a variety of comfortable and fair-priced accommodation. There are new hotels, apartments and lodges opening every year, while others have been refurbished and improved.

As you might expect, some areas of Uganda are more popular with tourists than others. In contrast to the large towns and cities, the national parks such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls have only

a limited number of camps, lodges and hotels to accommodate visitors. At the other end of the scale, thanks to the popularity of gorilla safari tours in Bwindi, in the southwest, there is no lack of camps and lodges in nearby places such as Kabale and Kisoro.

EASTERN REGION By comparison with Western Uganda, the East is much less visited by foreign tourists, yet the region has important natural attractions of its own. Most hotels in the East are situated in Mbale, a town characterised by picturesque waterfalls as well as the national park.

There is an excellent range of high-quality properties here, including Mbale Resort Hotel, Mount Elgon Hotel and Wash and Wills Hotel.

Uganda is full of hidden wonders, so explore and discover while you stay in some of Africa’s finest hotels, camps and lodges.

DIVERSIT Y ADDS TO THRILL OF NATIONAL PARKS As one of Africa’s most diverse and exciting destinations for wildlife and birdlife, it’s no wonder that Uganda’s national parks are high on the list for many visitors. Of course, these parks and their inhabitants are not the only draw, but their contribution to the phrase ‘Pearl of Africa’ is clear.

t was Winston Churchill who in 1908 coined the phrase ‘Pearl of Africa’ to describe the magnificent wildlife, birdlife and scenery of Uganda – and over a century later his sentiments still ring true.

Countless visitors head to Uganda each year with the aim of visiting some of East Africa’s best-loved national parks and the chance to get close to all kinds of wildlife including the Big Five and other, rarer animals such as mountain gorillas.

This diversity makes Uganda a truly special destination for wildlife lovers. It allows visitors to combine a variety of experiences in one trip, from a classic game drive to an intimate encounter with habituated gorilla groups.

Uganda is home to 10 national parks, each with its own unique draw for visitors, from gorillas to big game to an extinct volcano.

BWINDI IMPENETR ABLE Size: 321 sq km Location: South-west Uganda Famously home to around half the world’s population of mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the country’s top places to visit. Several of the gorilla groups can be tracked – a thrilling experience like no other in Uganda. While the gorillas are arguably the biggest draw, the park also contains over 100 other mammals and some 350 bird species. A wide choice of lodges and camps is available.

KIBALE Size: 766 sq km Location: Western Uganda Located next to Queen Victoria National Park, Kibale is home to a variety of mammals, including chimpanzees – part of a tracking programme within the park – as well as bushbuck, elephant and buffalo. QUEEN ELIZABETH Size: 1,978 sq km Location: South-west Uganda With its diverse landscapes and variety of inhabitants, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most popular parks. Visitors will find big game along with 10 primate species and over 600 bird types. The Ishasha sector of the park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a popular highlight.

RWENZORI MOUNTAINS Size: 998 sq km Location: Western Uganda Rwenzori Mountains National Park is now a Unesco World Heritage Site, offering a unique combination of

glaciers, waterfalls and lakes. The park is host to 70 mammal species, including hyrax, duiker and blackand-white colobus monkey, and over 200 bird species, many of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift.

Camps are available at Ruboni, Nyakalengija and Kilembe, plus accommodation in nearby Kasese.

SEMULIKI Size: 220 sq km Location: Western Uganda Semuliki is one of Uganda’s newest national parks, established in 1993. The park borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is primarily made up of tropical lowland forest, home to countless bird species. A lodge, guesthouses and camps can be found in the park, as well as accommodation in nearby Fort Portal.

TRIBAL HERITAGE GIVES CULTURE ITS BUZZ

U

ganda is a notably diverse country with a multifaceted culture that has been shaped down the years by traditional practices and lifestyles.

Today’s Uganda is a patchwork of cultural influences, from pre-colonial times through to modern city life and urban development, all existing side by side.

While major hubs such as Kampala and Entebbe have developed into bustling cities and transport hubs, with commercial districts and modern infrastructure, the traditional Uganda can still be found in more rural areas where modernity has yet to encroach.

TRIBES Today, Uganda is home to some 65 officially recognised tribes. The largest, the Baganda, consists of around 6 million people – around 16.5 per cent of the national population – and is one of many ethnic groups in Africa who speak Bantu languages. The smallest tribe is the Mening, comprising fewer than 3,000 people.

Because of this tribal variety, there is a wide range of languages spoken in Uganda – about 40 in total – of

which the most common is Luganda. The country’s official languages are English and Swahili. English is taught in schools and is the language of business, while Swahili is the lingua franca for much of eastern and south-eastern Africa.

Traditionally, Uganda was divided into four kingdoms – Buganda, Toro, Busoga and Bunyoro-Kitara – with customs dating back many centuries.

Each kingdom had its own cultural practices and its own monarch.

Today, these monarchs are still revered and exert political and cultural influence.

The kingdoms were abolished in September 1967 by Uganda’s first prime minister, Milton Obote, after independence in 1962 but were reinstated in 2005. In 2008 Rwenzururu became the nation’s fifth kingdom.

CULTURE IN UGANDA In addition to its kingdoms, Uganda is divided into four administrative provinces – Central, Western, Eastern and Northern – which in turn comprise 111 districts. While the populations of these provinces are similar, the divisions are not based on land area, so the provinces vary considerably in size.

International artists are featured regularly on radio, in addition to local singers like Bobi Wine and Eddy Kenzo.

ARTS

The Nommo National Art Gallery in Kampala showcases works by both local and international artists. The gallery is also used for theatre, film, music and dance performances in association with the National Cultural Centre and the National Theatre. Other, smaller galleries in Kampala also contain work by local artists.

Historically, tribal music in Uganda was functional, performed at events such as marriages and festivals. Skilled musicians would play instruments such as drums and fiddles, often accompanied by

he Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA) is a company limited by guarantee, formed and registered in May 2000. The association has over 500 hotels, lodges, motels, inns and camps among its members. UHOA is currently the biggest tourism trade association in Uganda, with members in various regions of the country. Its members range from five-star hotels to ungraded facilities such as homestays and camps.

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES: • To build the capacity of members to offer quality services through numerous capacity building programmes.

• To assist members to improve their occupancy rates through marketing and promotional programmes.

• To lobby and advocate for an enabling environment for the hotels industry in Uganda.

INSTITUTIONAL VISION: To be the leading association and principal voice of the hotel sector in Uganda.

• To strengthen the institutional capacity of UHOA to deliver its mandate to members.

To promote and enhance quality standards among members’ facilities and services through capacity building, marketing and advocacy.

The UHOA governance structure includes the General Assembly, the Board of Trustees, the Executive Council and the Secretariat. The General Assembly is the highest decision-making body at UHOA. It comprises fully paid-up members and meets once a year. The Executive Council meets every quarter and oversees the day-to-day running of the UHOA secretariat.

BET TER-THAN-EVER CHOICE OF GOOD HOTELS IN CAPITAL I

t comes as no surprise that the hospitality scene is booming in Uganda’s capital city. What may surprise many, however, is that Kampala’s hotel sector only began its rapid expansion in the past decade or so. Today, the city has 117 UHOA-member properties to welcome visitors.

This recent upsurge in accommodation can be traced back to the 2008 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, at which the need for top-quality hotels to accommodate heads of state and their delegations was highlighted.

Prior to this, the choice of hotels in Kampala left much to be desired and space was always at a premium.

Fierce competition between hotels has helped the sector, too, leading to higher levels of customer service and greater attention to detail. This is welcome news indeed for visitors, who can depend on UHOA-rated properties to offer peace of mind.

Under the recent hotel grading programme, nine properties were awarded two stars and nine, including The Mackinnon Suites and Kabira Country Club, received three stars. T

he remote Northern Region of Uganda has undergone a transformation in recent times as its popularity with visitors increases from year to year.

This in turn has had a positive effect on the community, which has seen improvements to the roads and the opening of new hotels.

The region has about 30 recognised hotels, with concentrations in the main town of Gulu and in Lira.

The hotels vary in size and price, offering a wide range to suit all budgets and requirements. There are now five UHOA members in Gulu and a further four in Lira. There are also places to stay in Nebbi, Arua, Kumi, Adjumani, Kitgum, Pakwach and Moroto.

Kidepo Valley National Park, in the Karamoja subregion of Northern Uganda, is one of Africa’s finest wildlife reserves. It covers an area of more than 1,400 sq km and is transected by the Kidepo and Narus rivers. The remoteness of the park makes it difficult to visit, however, and Kidepo Valley sees fewer than 2,500 visitors a year.

Accommodation here is limited to a few tented camps and lodges.

HIDDEN GEMS Northern Uganda is also home to Murchison Falls National Park, one of the hidden gems of Africa. The falls – also known as the Kabalega Falls – are located on the White Nile River between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert. The Eastern Region stretches from the River Nile to the border of western Kenya, and one of its biggest draws for tourists is the regional capital, Jinja (see separate story on Page 46). Aside from Jinja, there is a handful of other towns offering accommodation of varying standards and prices.

MBALE Arguably the second most visited city in the Eastern Region is Mbale, the main commercial centre of Mbale District and a popular place to stay for those visiting the neighbouring Mount Elgon National Park and Sipi Falls. The popularity of the park and its natural attractions has led to a range of good accommodation opening up in Mbale and its surroundings, including the Mount Elgon Hotel and the Mbale Resort Hotel as well as budget-friendly properties.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Region, the towns of Busia, Iganga, Tororo and Pallisa all offer a good choice of accommodation, although luxury properties are less common here than in Kampala or Entebbe.

Many of the 10 UHOA-member properties in the Eastern Region are in these towns.

The closest international airport to Eastern Uganda is Entebbe, but it’s possible to fly into Soroti Airport on a charter flight.

The best way, therefore, to get to Eastern Uganda and explore the area is by road – either self-drive or using public bus services or by arrangement with the tour operators.
