In the remotest reaches of the Okavango Delta lies Duba Plains, an unobtrusive, intimate camp surrounded by expansive, seasonally flooded plains. One of the delta’s most remote camps, Duba Plains is on a tree-filled island in a private 30,000 hectare concession known as the Kwedi Reserve, an area famed for lion prides and buffalo herds, and the filming of the documentary ‘Relentless Enemies’.

Accommodation consists of eight private units, each consisting of a twin-bedroom, lounge, Victorian-style bathroom with an outside shower. Each unit has a deck with views over the Kalahari bush. Activities include game drives and track wildlife in an open four-wheel-drive vehicle or guests can take to the bush on foot with San guides who share their knowledge of game in the region. A cultural experience with the San is an experience that will never fade.

Accommodation is made up of six roomy tents with an en-suite bathroom, an outside shower, and a veranda overlooking the floodplain. The thatch-roofed lounge, dining room and bar areas are raised on platforms along with a swimming pool, all providing a beautiful view. There is a variety of activities including day and night game drives, often following the lion prides tracking the buffalo herds as they roam the vast concession.

Despite many changes over the years, the spirit and character that defined Island Safari Lodge, as conceptualised and built by Toy Graham in 1973, still exists today.

Jacana Camp just west of Moremi Game Reserve is owned and operated by Ngamiland Adventure Safaris. It is set in an area densely populated with the beautiful red lechwe, sitatunga and wattled cranes. It is an aquatic camp on a small island surrounded by water for most of the year.

For over 30 years the lodge has maintained its legendary status in Maun and return guests take as much pride in the renovations and refurbishments as the owners and management do – all in an attempt to keep facilities up to date with modern standards while retaining decades worth of irreplaceable charm. The meandering Thamalakane River forms a picturesque pastoral vista to the 12 cottagestyle thatch chalets nestled under a lofty canopy of ancient trees.

Accommodation is in fi ve Meru-style tents each on raised wooden platforms with decks featuring entrancing views over the lagoon and floodplains. The en-suite bathroom is enclosed but roofless. The main dining area is on an elevated wooden deck between two enormous sycamore fig trees, and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Downstairs, there is a cosy pub and lounge, with a large viewing deck, an open area to sit around a fire and view the stars and a small plunge pool. There are three main features of the Linyanti Concession: the Linyanti River, the woodlands of the interior and the well-known Savute Channel, famous as a sporadic and unusual watercourse. Between 1980 and 2008 the channel ceased to flow and Savuti Camp overlooked open grassland. During 2008, the Savute Channel once more began to flow, creating a water source that rapidly filled with aquatic life, wide varieties of waterbirds and hippo. This in turn attracted one of the highest dry season concentrations of elephant in the country, roan and other antelope and their attendant predators – lion, cheetah and wild dog.

The shaded camp is raised off the ground and offers extraordinary views over the floodplains and open savannas, broken only by attractive palm islands. These views are among the camp’s most compelling features. Guests can sit on their verandas and gaze over the floodplains of the Selinda, enjoying the passing wildlife as it has been for millennia. Hardly a moment goes by without animals being seen in front of camp. Activities on offer include game drives both during the day and night, fishing, nature walks and boating along the Selinda Spillway.

Afro Trek offers personalised safaris in the Okavango Delta region and all the National Parks and Reserves. Afro Trek is based at Sedia Riverside Hotel, just 3 km out of Maun.

After having worked for different safari companies for a period of over 16 years, Pius Tebele, the company owner and experienced guide, believed there was a lack of dedicated cultural tourism within the safari industry.

Afro Trek also specialises in mokoro safaris of one, two or three days’ duration. These take place in a private concession, owned and operated by Batswana, on the Boro River system, in the Okavango Delta. For over 10 years Afro Trek has been working closely with and supporting the local communities that run the concession area.

Afrika Calls has therefore been built and developed to incorporate cultural tourism within safari experiences – this includes meetings with the legendary bushmen, visits to the Drotsky’s Caves and involvement with the Kuru San Dance Festival.

Sedia Riverside Hotel radiates African ambience and offers various types of accommodation including chalets, hotel rooms, walk-in tents and a spacious campsite area. The hotel rooms and chalets are all en-suite and equipped with air conditioning and digital TV.

There are several different kinds of safaris on offer; mobile safaris, lodge safaris, tailormade itineraries and day-trips.

Afro Trek Safaris, in conjunction with Sedia Riverside Hotel, offers a range of personalised mobile safaris to suit individual requirements and uses customised game viewing vehicles and spacious walk-in tents.

The Botswana Wildlife Management Association (BWMA) promotes the welfare of the wildlife industry in Botswana by all possible means and has established a platform for the industry to facilitate contact with the government, its ministries and departments concerned with wildlife and land use and with associations and societies concerned with conservation of the natural environment of Botswana.

Destination South was founded by Alan Michael Schmidt, who has over 25 years of professional hunting experience.

BWMA provides statistics and information on the activities of the wildlife industry to government, local councils, land boards and other interested parties. As well as promoting and safeguarding the interests of the wildlife industry and members of the association, including many tourism and safari companies, the association has established a code of conduct for members. It also works with and assists the Department of Wildlife & National Parks and other governmental organisations and interested entities.

Tonunga Camp, in the controlled hunting area, CT1, is in the central district of Botswana and is one of the largest hunting concession areas in the country. The major trophy in this area is elephant. Owing to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the concession, the serious trophy hunter has an excellent chance of big ivory. Other species found in the area include lion, leopard, buffalo, eland, gemsbok, kudu, impala, zebra, duiker, steenbok and giraffe.

The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation was formed in 1991 with the aim of promoting wildlife conservation and environmental education for the children of Botswana.

The first project of the foundation was the creation of the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in 1994 on 30 sq km of donated land outside Gaborone. In addition to naturally occurring animal species such as warthogs, kudu and a variety of snakes, several species have been reintroduced, including zebra, giraffe, eland, ostrich, hippos and rhinos. The reserve contains Botswana’s only wild cheetah transit station for the relocation of ‘problem’ cheetahs brought in by ranchers, and four young, orphaned African elephants who are being raised as a joint venture with the Serendib Elephant Orphanage. The philosophy behind Mokolodi Nature Reserve is that income from tourism and the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources is used to subsidise the conservation projects and the environmental education programme.
