Welcome to issue 18 of 540 magazine

O

ur cover story in this issue is about Nairobi’s growing spa and wellness sector. It seems we have become a nation of pampered poodles; seeking remedies to the hurly-burly of everyday life with exotic lotions, potions and expensive treatments.

And as part of a series of regular articles about looking good, feeling great and achieving personal improvement, we put forward some beauty tips.

With tourism prospects on the up-and-up at the Kenya coast, we report on Diani’s ever-popular beach rugby festival and sing the praises of Watamu – one of the coast’s truly special destinations, where a weekend break is much to be recommended.

TERMINAL 2 OPENS AT JKIA The new Terminal 2 at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport opened in April. The second flight into the new terminal was the 5H 408 Fly540 flight from Kisumu. The new prefabricated terminal will serve an estimated 2.5 million passengers a year.

Evening of pride for Kenyan tourism

E

veryone involved in Kenya’s tourism sector could feel a warm glow of pride when the winners were unveiled at a World Travel Awards ceremony in Seychelles in June.

This was the WTA’s Africa and Indian Ocean awards ceremony, held at the Kempinski Seychelles Resort in Baie Lazare on 20 June.

In front of an audience of more than 150 industry leaders from 20 countries, Kenya Tourism Board took the coveted trophy for Africa’s Leading Tourist Board, while the Port of Mombasa was voted Africa’s Leading Cruise Port, the Masai Mara National Reserve won the award for Africa’s Leading National Park, and various other companies and resorts – including Diani Beach – were ranked first in their categories.

Winners One of the biggest winners on the night was Air Seychelles, which took the titles of Leading Airline, Leading Airline – Business Class and Leading Cabin Crew in the Indian Ocean section.

Maldives was recognised as Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination, while the host nation, Seychelles, took the title of Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination.

WTA president Graham Cooke said: “Tonight has been a fantastic showcase of hospitality brands from across Africa and the Indian Ocean.” He said the winners would now move forward to the grand final in Morocco later in the year.

Also taking home prizes in the Africa section were Egypt’s Hilton

Hurghada Plaza (Leading All Inclusive Resort) and Tunisia’s La Cigale Hôtel Tabarka (Leading New Hotel).

Transcorp Hilton Abuja was voted Nigeria’s Leading Hotel and Africa’s Leading Business Hotel.

The event was hosted by the former Miss Seychelles, Sherlyn Furneau, and by leading presenter Galen Bresson.

GOLF BRINGS ‘GIRL POWER’ to talented Kenyans Kenya’s first lady of golf, Rose Naliaka, talks to ‘540’ about the rising female stars of Kenya’s golfing scene and how it feels to be at the forefront of this exciting and emerging community.

one are the days when golf courses were dominated by wealthy older gentlemen in collared tee-shirts and ill-fitting shorts. Well, in Nairobi anyway. Here, the girls are giving the gentlemen a run for their money, thanks largely to Rose Naliaka and her golfing academy.

Golf Academy Rose Naliaka began her golfing career 35 years ago at Kitale Golf Club in her home town. Since then she has played all over the world, won numerous accolades and become Kenya’s first female golf professional. Her long and hugely successful career has seen her play some of the best courses in the world, including the Emirates in Dubai and the magnificent CransMontana in Switzerland, with views of the Alps from the greens. But it is on the golf courses of her native land that Rose is dedicating her time and exceptional skill to inspire a new generation of professional female golfers.

“We have excellent golf courses in Kenya,” says Rose. “What we lack is structured and fully equipped golf

academies. We also need to look into building public facilities to cater for children whose parents cannot afford to join a members’ club.”

Academy Her determination and her passion for the sport led Rose to form the Naliaka Golf Academy in 2007 at the Ngong Race Course & Golf Park. There were two main reasons for starting the academy, says Rose: “To educate girls from economically challenged homes through the game of golf; and because the number of girls participating in golf and playing in tournaments was declining and I wanted to find out what the problem was.” The academy is located not far from some of the

RISING STAR 

Dedication, intelligence, hard work and a high level of discipline will make you a champion city’s poorest areas and where many of the academy’s students come from.

With most pupils at the academy coming from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, it can sometimes be difficult to keep the girls motivated as well as to support them financially. While there is no scholarship scheme, Rose says there are ways of helping the girls to succeed in golf and succeed academically: “We had three girls sponsored by two schools and an individual to further their education. Most of them completed their high school last year.”

Wisdom After 35 years’ golfing experience – including most recently training up some of Kenya’s bright new stars – Rose has some words of wisdom for others wishing to follow in her footsteps: “My one piece of advice to a young Kenyan player is that he or she is not different from other kids who are making it on the PGA and LPGA [Ladies Professional Golf Association] Tours. Dedication, intelligence, hard work and a high level of discipline would make you a champion not only on the golf course but in your entire life.”

INSPIRING  Training up Kenya’s future golfers

Serah Angeline Khanyereri joined the Naliaka Golf Academy in 2011 after a visit from Rose to the Jamhuri Primary School where Serah was a pupil. Serah wasn’t selected initially because she was too short, but after hearing her classmates come back from golf with high praise, she decided she wanted to join in. “One Saturday morning I decided to follow them and went to try it,” says Serah. “I found it so interesting and teacher Rose accepted me and gave me support until where I am now.”

And where Serah is now is quite astonishing for a 17-year-old girl. At the beginning of July this year, Serah achieved something very impressive: she became the 2015 Kenya Ladies Amateur Champion, beating four players from the national team to gain the title. She beat Kellie Gachaga on the 17th hole, which led her to victory in the tournament.

As well as helping her to excel at golf, Serah says the academy has enabled her to achieve more in her personal life. “I have learnt discipline and responsibility,” she says.

“Golf has also helped me to organise myself, and I have a lot of confidence, as well as making my mum proud, too.”

Moreover, the academy has opened the way to new experiences for Serah. “I had never seen a ship, or the sea, but because of golf I travelled to Mombasa and

saw all that. Some of the girls in the academy have travelled by air to play golf in Zambia, Malawi, Scotland and soon to Zimbabwe. I have never been on a plane and I am looking forward that one day I will also get to travel in one.”

Amid the successes and trophies, Serah has encountered a few setbacks during her four years at the academy. But this has only made her more determined. “I failed to get a golf scholarship after my class eight because I didn’t work as hard as the teacher had asked. Now I know I must work hard in everything in order to achieve what I want in life.”

Advice Any advice for aspiring golfers? “If you have noticed you have the capability to play, go ahead and mature your talent. I believe the game of golf will take you places.

You can get scholarships and hopefully become a pro. Then you can make lots of money by focusing and winning tournaments.”

So what is Serah’s ambition for the future? “If I do well and pass my examination, I would like to join a college in Europe or America and play golf for them. At the end, I would like to become a golf professional and, later, give back to the society like my teacher Rose.”

he eagerly anticipated opening of Nairobi’s brand-new Garden City Mall took place on 28 May. About 120 shops opened to the public in Phase 1 of this ambitious project, with a further six phases planned.

Garden City is just one of many new malls opening in and around Nairobi, reaffirming its status as one of Africa’s shopping capitals.

Kenya is hardly short of shopping malls. There are dozens, from Nairobi to Mombasa to Naivasha, each looking to offer something for every shopper’s taste. The

COMING SOON  Mall of Kenya at Two Rivers The Mall of Kenya at Two Rivers is due to open in October 2015 as part of the 100-acre Two Rivers Lifestyle Centre development in Gigiri.

The 220-store mall offers exciting fashion, delicious food, state-of-the-art technology and just about everything in between. A branch of the French supermarket chain Carrefour is one of the most anticipated store openings at Two Rivers. The new mall also includes East Africa’s first Virgin Active Health Club, with cardio equipment, free weights, a heated pool and much more.

The Hub Karen Expected to open this November, The Hub is set on 20 acres in Nairobi’s green suburb of Karen. The first of two phases is on track to be open by the end of the year, featuring retail and office spaces, a wellness centre and more.

The second phase will include a hotel and conference centre as well as residential units.

Juja City Mall Located in Juja Town, Kiambu County, Juja City Mall is expected to be complete by the end of the year. Not quite as large as Two Rivers or Garden City, Juja City Mall is focused more on being a local mall than a multi-dimensional venue.

However, plans for the site include a hotel, a filling station and an amusement park.

Comesa Shopping Mall Eastleigh The Comesa (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) Shopping Mall will be the largest in the area, with retail giant Nakumatt already confirmed to occupy 40,000 sq ft on two floors. The mall is located on General Waruinge Street, Eastleigh. Construction is expected to take two years and the mall is due to open early in 2017.

NEW MALLS  Shop ‘til you drop

Garden City One of the most exciting new additions to Nairobi’s shopping portfolio is Garden City Mall, one of the focal points of the new Garden City development on Thika Road. It will be Kenya’s first integrated residential, retail and office development, offering much

more than other malls in the city.

Part of the Vision 2030 initiative, Garden City is expected to play a role in transforming and improving the country, and was recognised for its potential as a retail, leisure and business hub for East Africa.

The mall has already proved popular, despite the site being not yet complete. The inclusion of Kenya’s first Game store – a subsidiary of the South African retailer Massmart – was a talking point even before it opened and is a unique selling point for the mall.

3 WATAMU MARINE NATIONAL PARK  Watamu Marine National Park is one of Kenya’s finest.

It was established in 1968 as part of Malindi and Watamu Marine Parks and Reserves. The marine park, recognised internationally as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve, is home to hundreds of species of fish as well as excellent coral gardens just 300 metres from the shore. Watamu is a key nesting site for turtles, with a turtle watch programme aimed at protecting this endangered species.

Inland from Watamu, visitors can see the remains of an ancient Swahili town at the Gede Ruins (Ruins of Gedi). This historical monument and popular visitor site contains the ruins of houses, palaces and mosques. The ruins are thought to date from the 12th century and but this was a thriving community until it was abandoned around the year 1500.

Despite their size and significance, the ruins are not mentioned in any old texts about the area. Cloaked in mystery, they are as haunting as they are beautiful, with many tales of spooky goings-on. The site itself is compelling and one can easily spend an hour or two meandering through the ruins, which are being taken over by nature. The area is also home to a diversity of birdlife as well as Sykes’ monkeys and indigenous trees.

DOWN on Diani Beach Diani Beach Touch Rugby is based on Rugby League – but without all that kicking and aggressive tackling

R

ecently voted Africa’s best beach destination for the second year running at the World Travel Awards, the Kenyan coastal resort of Diani Beach certainly has a lot to offer.

Diani Beach, about an hour south of Mombasa, is a tropical paradise and a popular destination for those looking for sun, sea and relaxation.

If, however, you’re looking for sun and sea without the relaxation, then Diani Beach Touch Rugby is the perfect answer. This popular event is a staple of the local events calendar.

It was first held in 2009 and the seventh edition of this weekend-long event took place in July.

Diani Beach Touch Rugby was conceived by George Barbour, owner of the popular Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant. The competition

has gone from strength to strength, with 28 teams competing this year.

Many were from Kenya, but others had journeyed much further.

The weekend’s action The event began on Friday with a total of 32 games scheduled for the day. Although some of the teams pulled out last minute, they were quickly replaced by others. The teams were divided into four pools, www.fly540.com

with each team playing other members of their pool. A total of 21 men’s teams, five mixed teams, one women’s team and one team of veterans took part. The weather was far from ideal, with strong tides and winds causing the matches to be played under floodlights.

Saturday Play continued on the Saturday, which also saw the start of the schools touch rugby. Wakimbizi finished top of Pool A after an unbeaten run on the second day.

Pool B finished with two leaders, the South Coast Pirates and Sand Pipers, who each won all but one of their matches. The Bollore Pumas continued their unbeaten run, which saw them lead Pool C and enter Sunday’s cup competition, along with second-placed Kenyatta University Mombasa. The Top Deck finished ahead of The Dash Board in Pool D. The top four teams from each pool entered Sunday’s main competition to compete for one of eight spots in the quarter finals, while the remaining three teams in each pool competed in the bowl competition.

The Dash Board were not the only winners of the weekend, however, as Civicon were the Plate winners after defeating Newick on Sea, which finished 1-0. Private Developers won the Bowl and The Honey Badgers won the Shield.

SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT  In addition to the 28 adult teams, six school teams took part in the event for the first time. The schools tournament was separate from the main competition and saw the teams compete in a round-robin style competition. The top four teams, Inoro, Mafikizolo, Shosholoza and Daraja, proceeded through to the semi finals, before Mafikizolo (a team from Nanyuki Children’s Home) and Daraja (also from Nanyuki) fought it out in the final. Mafikizolo won the schools tournament after defeating Daraja 2-0 in the final.

TOUCH RUGBY RULES  Touch rugby is a variation of Rugby League, with limited contact. Instead of tackling other players, a touch is used. This reduces the risk of injury which can come with Rugby League and allows for a more social game, available to many different age groups.

To score a try, the player must place the ball on or over the try line (without being touched by another player). For Diani Touch Rugby, a try is worth a varying number of points, depending on the team: men’s team – one point; mixed and veterans – two points; women – three points. Three points are awarded for winning a match, two points for a draw and one for a defeat.

Unlike Rugby League, kicking is not permitted in touch rugby – only passing, knocking and throwing. Forward passes are not allowed.

Each team has a maximum of eight players, with five players allowed on the field at any time. For a team to qualify as mixed, at least two women must be in the team. For veterans, each member of the team must be over 40.

No shoes are allowed during play, only bare feet, socks or reef shoes, as well as team T-shirts, which must be the same colour.

FANCY TAKING PART?  Diani Beach Touch Rugby 2016 is scheduled for 8 to 10 July 2016. It’s advisable to register early as the event is limited to 28 teams.

t’s the dream of many: a beachfront villa surrounded by palm trees on an exotic island. But can this dream become a reality?

Well, if you take the daily Fly540 flight from Nairobi to Zanzibar (Unguja) and perhaps on to Pemba and Mafia then there are certainly ways of making your dreams come true – and it’s not an expensive as you might think. What’s more, there’s still plenty of space on the beach for newcomers.

“Almost all the investors who contact me are interested in beachfront properties for hotels and resorts,” says Chidy Darweish, of Zanzibar Archipelago Properties.

“I do hear from investors from the UK and Europe, the US, other parts of Africa, Arab countries, and once even from South America.” And he adds: “Zanzibaris and local expats are also investment buyers.”

Influx So, despite an influx of foreign buyers to the Zanzibar archipelago, it’s still local people who are the most active in buying and selling homes and land. “The population is growing here and there is more income on the island so more homes are being built,” says Chidy.

“The government is promoting investment in a lot of areas – agriculture, manufacturing and trade.”

market has been mixed. Investment, especially foreign, tends to go up and down with the world economy and the news [relating to Africa]. Most recently, it was slow during the ebola crisis, even though West Africa is, of course, very far away, but it has now picked up again. I’d say it was in balance right now, with enough properties for sale and a steady number of interested buyers.”

But where to buy on Unguja?

“Chukwani and Fumba are areas where a lot of new housing is being built,” says Chidy. “There is also a new development near the new State University of Zanzibar, about 20 km out of Stone Town near Tunguu. For beachfront property, the north coast – that’s Nungwi and Kendwa – has probably been the most popular, but it is getting pretty crowded and there is not that much undeveloped land left.

There is still property for sale on the east coast, where the resorts tend to be more spread out. There is more limited tourism development on the west side of the island, between Stone Town and Nungwi, but some very attractive land is still available there.”

But have all the best spots already been snapped up? “There are definitely good beachfront plots still available. The prices are

based on size, beach quality and location. They range from US$ 150,000 or so for a smaller plot, maybe one hectare, on Unguja to over US$ 1 million for bigger plots in well-known tourist locations.”

There’s also a lot of interest in Pemba right now and it seems to be growing. “It’s a beautiful island,” says Chidy. “Hilly and forested, with almost untouched beaches, some of the best diving sites in the world and a rich and historic culture. In the last few years, the government has made a lot of investments in infrastructure and now there are good roads, electricity and even Wi-Fi on the island.”

He adds: “My mother’s family is from Pemba and I actually got into this business dealing with family

They tend to be people who have fallen in love with Pemba and want to be part of the island. Also, local villages in Pemba have a big say in what projects are acceptable in their communities. and www.zanzibarproperties.com) So if I had, say, US$ 500,000 to spend, what could I expect for my money? “US$ 500,000 would go a long way,” says Chidy. You could buy a very high-end home in one of the upscale suburbs or on the beach in Zanzibar; five to 10 acres of spectacular beachfront on Pemba; smaller beachfront plots on the north and east coasts; or a large beachfront plot in a secluded spot on the west coast of Zanzibar.”

Are there any restrictions on foreigners buying property in the archipelago? “Though people commonly use the terms ‘buying’ and ‘selling’, the land is actually owned by the government,” says Chidy. “Beachfront property is generally considered investment property and both citizens and non-citizens can acquire it by renewable long-term leases. They are required to provide adequate compensation to the current holders of the land, who then waive all rights to the land. The lease period is generally for 33 years and is renewable. This applies to Unguja and Pemba, which are governed by the property laws of Zanzibar. Mafia is governed under the laws of mainland Tanzania.”

So, if you want to snap up a bargain, get on that flight and head for the Zanzibar archipelago.

Goodbye Mr Softy

I

have never been overly impressed with Lexus’s limited efforts in the 4x4 sector – or, until recently, with its overall range of high-end cars.

I can see that parent Toyota wants to mix it with Europe’s luxury marques and needs a distinct brand such as Lexus in order to do so. But Toyota never seemed to get it quite right with Lexus; offering extremely worthy, well built and reliable machines that were as dreary as a grey July morning in Nairobi.

This was especially true of Lexus’s unloved RX, its previous stab at creating a 4x4. Far from beautiful, oddly misshapen and generally useless in terms of serious bundu bashing, this was an SUV for softies – incapable of tackling anything more daring than the daily school run.

So meet the new Lexus NX Crossover, a car that dispels much (but not all) of Lexus’s ‘softy’ image.

Not before time, here is a car with a much more aggressive-looking profile; one that will finally appeal to a younger and edgier customer.

And using will.i.am to promote the car is no doubt part of this process.

Urban Yet doubts remain as to whether Lexus has got this model exactly right. And is the car up to the rough and tumble of East Africa, both in and out of town? I suspect not. There is still a hint that this is a car for urban cruisers – confirmed, perhaps, by the entry-level 2x4 NX versions for those who don’t want venture too far beyond the city limits.

On the other hand, I love the look of the NX (and, let’s face it, not

every 4x4 buyer wants to participate in the Rhino Charge). And I appreciate its comfort and build quality, even if the cabin space is a bit cramped. I especially like the impressively well equipped interior of the F Sport version, which comes with 18-inch alloy rims (as does the Luxury model) and mixes

a feeling of high performance with exquisite levels of luxury and refinement. I have to say the interiors of other variants in the range are not quite so exciting or immediately compelling.

In terms of engines, there are three to choose from: hybrid, diesel and petrol. For the time being, I suspect that East African buyers will be wary of the NX 300h hybrid, which uses Lexus’s proven 2.5 litre Atkinson-cycle engine, generator, motor and battery.

Special features include sprungweight damping control to increase ride comfort and handling stability by reducing the amount of pitching on uneven road surfaces.

The direct-injection 2.0 litre turbo diesel in the NX 200t comes with an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold and a twin scroll turbo charger. A new six-speed

automatic transmission has been adopted to match the new engine.

It features new torque-demand control logic, which calculates required engine torque to maximise the exhilaration of quick acceleration response and fuel efficiency.

In terms of the petrol option, the Lexus Valvematic system provides high torque through an expanded valve opening angle and VVT operation range in a 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine. This is linked to a newly developed and electronically controlled S-CVT/ multi-drive sequential-shift transmission.

Appealing Overall this is a well equipped and visually appealing car and one that will attract interest. It’s not cheap (especially the F Sport) and SUV buyers have plenty of other

options. But at least it’s a step in the right direction for Lexus.

Popular in the United States, the Lexus brand has failed to make a big impact in Europe and there it must compete head-on with German auto makers Mercedes, BMW and Audi, and with Land Rover in the SUV sector. So when it finally arrives in East Africa, it will be interesting to see if this new Lexus NX is any more popular than its late and unlamented RX predecessor.

t was indeed good news and a much-needed sign that, perhaps, all was not doom and gloom on Kenya’s south coast.

As other hotels were closing for the season or even shutting up shop for good, one iconic property seemed to be bucking the trend, confounding the generally held view that nothing but bad times lay ahead for those properties located on Diani Beach.

So when the chief executive of Jacaranda Group told me last November that he was planning to reopen the Indian Ocean Beach

Resort (JIOBR), I was as surprised as I was sceptical. But, good as his word, in late March this year Killian Lugwe – a highly experienced hotelier who learned the hospitality trade with Serena – did indeed make a bold move and reopen the resort for the first time in about 18 months.

Classic Before its closure in 2013, the Indian Ocean Beach Resort was a particular favourite of mine. Here was a classic Swahili-style property on a fabulous stretch of beach, rooms that were a neat combina-

tion of old and new, and a classy à la carte seafood restaurant to match any on the south coast.

But times change. The old management left, the tourists stopped coming and JIOBR closed in September 2013. Like many other people, I doubted the property would ever reopen under the Jacaranda brand name. But I have been proved wrong.

So what’s different now? And how does the old girl compare with what’s on offer now?

Well, it seems not too much – and for me that’s a good thing. The

The rooms have been freshened and fitted with new bathrooms and floors. The reception has been redecorated and now features a check-in counter with a Swahili theme. The kitchen has been refitted to complement the new buffet area.

Barbecue In the past, each week there was a sumptuous all-you-can-

eat barbecue in a nearby forest clearing. Killian says this area is now under reconstruction and will reopen soon. It will feature special nights and encourage tourists to experience the food and culture of local communities. Sadly, the beach eatery is not reopening, but there is a seafood menu in the resort’s Traders restaurant.

So those who loved the old JIOBR can rest assured that they will love the revamped resort just as much. What’s more, with some amazing deals on offer, there has never been a better time to visit. www.fly540.com

Great food plus helpful staff made me feel special

ining at Graze is a moreish experience and, after my first visit, I shall certainly be going back.

Graze is bright and light, with a relaxed contemporary setting, and the moment you enter the restaurant you are greeted by a friendly smile. There is the option of sitting outside on the covered patio, but on this occasion I decided to stay inside. The advantage of this is that the kitchen is in the same room, allowing you to experience the wonderful smells – and sounds – of your food being prepared.

As an adventurous eater, I wanted to find out more about the food on offer and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my waitress was very knowledgeable in response to all my inquiries. For me,

this was a welcome change from other restaurants where the staff have lacked knowledge. The service was better than expected – friendly and polite but not too over-the-top or gushing – and each member of staff knew exactly what they were talking about. I’m told that, every morning, the head chef gathers all the staff, including cooks and waiting staff, in order to talk them through the menu being served that day.

Intimate With just 14 tables, the dining room is quite intimate. The tables are evenly spread out so diners can enjoy some space without feeling crowded.

The menu was impressive without being overwhelming,

offering a selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Graze specialises in steak and fish. There is a selection of flame-grilled steaks – choose from sirloin, rump, ribeye and bone-in steak – as well as seafood specialities such as jumbo prawns and red snapper. The drinks menu is extensive, with a good selection of wines, beers, cocktails and soft drinks. As it was only lunchtime, I opted for a sparkling water to accompany my food.

While I was making my choice from the menu, I was given a

selection of home-baked breads with oils and flavoured butters, which was a nice touch. I started with dressed asparagus, which was unusually served but incredibly delicious. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and covered with a softly boiled egg, covered in breadcrumbs and strips of black cheese. I was in heaven.

Steak For my main course, I had a T-bone steak, medium-rare, which was cooked to perfection. There was a selection of side dishes to choose from, including mash, spinach and salad, but I opted for chips, which were home-made and fresh. It was almost as if the potatoes had been dug up especially for me. This summarises the feeling at Graze: that the food is prepared and cooked as if it was only you they were cooking for. www.fly540.com

Travel Information VISA INFORMATION  Most nationals require visas to enter East Africa. Citizens from the five East African states require no visas while those from the Common Market of East and Southern Africa (COMESA) member states have relaxed entry requirements into East Africa.

However, East African member states have their own visa requirements for various nationals.

HEALTH  Vaccination requirements for international travellers:

KENYAN VISAS  Under new rules, all foreigners requiring a visa for entry into Kenya must apply for one in advance via www.ecitizen.go.ke.

A visa is required by all visitors travelling to Kenya with the exception of those who are nationals of a number of countries, including – but not exclusive to – East African Community Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda).

SOUTH SUDAN VISAS 

• Only valid yellow fever vaccination certificates are required of all travellers over one year old, arriving from yellow fever infected countries.

Any visitor going to South Sudan requires a valid visa. Visas are issued through the South Sudan Embassy.

• Vaccinations for international travellers are obtainable from all international air and sea ports, city and major municipal councils.

Immigration regulations stipulate that anyone going to South Sudan needs a travel permit from the Government of South Sudan. Those travelling to South Sudan from Kenya, should visit the South Sudan Embassy in Kenya.
