A vivid story of trading success and turbulent times

T

he region of Africa that is now Angola was first settled by huntergatherers in palaeolithic and neolithic times. In the sixth century, Bantu farming people migrated from the north and began the process of economical and cultural development.

In the 16th century Benguela became a centre of trade, especially in slaves for Brazil and Cuba, following the arrival of Portuguese navigators in 1582. The Fort of Benguela dates from 1587 and ships called at both Benguela and the deepwater harbour of Lobito.

Colony By the mid 17th century Portugal had annexed much of the region and it was ruled as a colony. In Benguela town, evidence of Portuguese rule can be seen in the churches of Populo and S. António as well as the hospital and the S. Filipe fortress.

The economy of Benguela began to thrive in the early 20th century as fishing and the cultivation of sisal, used in rope-making, became key industries. A boom in the copper industry led to the construction of the Benguela Railway, starting in 1903, to connect the copper-producing regions east of Angola with the Atlantic ports of Benguela and Lobito.

By the 1970s the country’s financial, construction and services sectors were flourishing. The Angolan War of Independence, from 1961 to 1974, ended with the proclamation of independence on November 11th 1975.

This difficult time led to the closure of most of the route of the important Benguela Railway, with only a 30 km section of the railway between Benguela and Lobito remaining in operation. With the return to a more peaceful environment, work began on restoring the line between Benguela and Huambo.

Peace restored With peace, the economy of Angola began to revive and the rail link between Lobito and Luena was fully restored in 2013.

The provincial capital is Benguela and the province covers a total area of 39,000 sq km. Neighbouring provinces are Kwanza-Sul, Huambo, Huila and Namibe.

The Province of Benguela has a population of approximately 2 million people of whom about 70 per cent are concentrated on the coast. Municipalities in the province include Benguela, Lobito, Bocoio, Balombo, Ganda, Cubal, Caimbambo, Catumbela, Baía Farta and Chongorói.

The provincial landscape is a complex of stepped plateaux crossed by rivers and valleys. The rivers accumulate water during the rainy season. The climate is highly variable – hot and dry on the coastal strip but mesothermal and moderately rainy further inland. The cold Benguela current moderates temperatures with average of around 25°C and a relative humidity of 70 to 80 per cent. There are two well defined seasons: the summer or rainy season (September to April) and cacimbo (May to August), the dry and cooler season. The vegetation is dominated by formations in the western steppe and open forest formations and moderately wooded savanna in the interior of the province. Recently, an overuse of

farming. Agriculture was one of the activities most affected by the civil war, which caused the displacement of thousands of rural inhabitants to the coast in search of refuge.

The task of reviving the agricultural sector involves a number of key activities. They include a rehabilitation of the irrigation systems both on the coastal strip and in the interior of the province. Benefits of the Benguela Current The Benguela Current is the broad, northward-flowing ocean current that forms the eastern portion of the South Atlantic Gyre. The current extends roughly from Cape Point in the south to the position of the Angola-Benguela Front in the north, at about 16°S. The current is driven by the prevailing south-easterly trade winds.

The cold, nutrient-rich waters that well up from a depth of about 200 to 300 metres provide the ideal conditions for high rates of phytoplankton growth and this in turn sustains the productive ecosystem of Benguela.

isitors to Benguela city, the capital of Benguela province, cannot fail to appreciate its picturesque setting by the ocean. One of the city’s best-known landmarks is its pleasant urban beach, the Praia Morena, where local people like to stroll on Sunday afternoons.

The city is famous, too, for its acacia trees, with their vivid red blossom. The acacia is one of the city symbols, along with the Rosa de Porcelana.

Second city Benguela city was founded in 1617. As a centre for the slave trade, it became the second city of Angola after the capital, Luanda. With its natural bays and the beneficial effects of the Benguela Current, it soon developed as a centre of fishing and salt production. Later, with the opening of the Benguela Railway, it became a trading hub for southern Angola.

As the country’s second-largest city, Benguela is well served by public transport, including Rosalina Express buses; several taxi companies such as Kalu Car; and car rental agencies such as Transcomercio and Gabriel Neto. The city’s modest-sized airport can receive small aircraft.

Development of the city’s hotel sector is well under way. Several hotels have opened in the past two years with more on the way.

The US dollar is widely accepted in Benguela; but visitors are advised to carry local currency (kwanza). Credit cards are not widely accepted, although most major hotels and restaurants will accept Visa.

Reopened Sadly, the war between 1975 and 2002 closed the railway line, leading to a big drop in business for the port. After much repair work and investment, however, the line was reopened for services to the DRC in 2013 with Lobito’s old colonial station giving way to a new Chinese-built terminus. The port has also been expanded and modernised and is busy once more.

Fortunately, Lobito was not badly damaged in the fighting, and its charming colonial buildings – both commercial and residential – have survived. Many, such as Cinema Imperio, the post office and the old railway terminus, were built in the 1920s and 1930s in Art Deco style.

Although the fortress is not in the best state of preservation, this is still a ‘must visit’ site for those interested in Angola’s colonial past.

New lease of life for Chimalavera Natural Park

enguela may be best known for its delightful beaches and romantic sunsets, but the province also contains two national parks, the Reserva Parcial do Búfalo and the Parque Natural Regional de Chimalavera.

These parks struggled through tough times in the 1980s and 1990, when most animals were decimated.

The Reserva Parcial do Búfalo still remains neglected, but the Parque de Chimalavera is being fully rehabilitated through a publicprivate partnership. Located 30 km south of Benguela, on the road to Dombe Grande, it is the smallest natural park in Angola, covering 150 sq km. In former times it was home to large populations of gazelle, kudu and mountain zebra.

Waterholes The park is being fenced, new waterholes have been created and partial reforestation is under way. An attractive wooden bungalow lodge with a restaurant has opened, offering an opportunity for visitors to stay overnight and enjoy the breathtaking views.

This park is definitely worth a visit.

The gazelles have returned in big herds and a restocking agreement has been signed with KwaZulu-Natal to supply the animals as soon as the fencing work is complete.

As a prime fishing location Lobito proudly hosts the yearly Big Game Fishing Tournament, a qualifying event for the IGFA Offshore World Championship.

Whatever the time of year, there is always something interesting to catch. While marlin can normally be caught all year round, the main season for dorado and sailfish is from December to March when the water temperature reaches 28°C. Other species include several large pelagic fish such as barracuda, jack, wahoo and tuna.

Lobito is hot new destination for cruise ships

o visit to Benguela, no matter how short, would be complete without sampling the province’s legendary cuisine – a cooking style dominated by the rich seafood harvest of the Atlantic Ocean.

Thanks to the beneficial effects of the cold Benguela Current, which mingles with the warm waters of Angola, the province has an abundance of wonderful seafood, including sardinella, horse mackerel, sardine, Angolan dentex, shrimp, crab, lobster and other tropical demersal species.

As a consequence, Lobito has a fine selection of seafood restaurants, with opportunities to enjoy lobster, shrimp and king crab throughout the provincial capital and in other coastal towns at reasonable prices.

One of the main species caught on this coast is squid, and all restaurants serve grilled squid as a main dish or as an appetizer to be savoured with chilled Cuca beer from the nearby Catumbela brewery.

Further north, in the small fishing village of Egito-Praia – a nominee for one of Angola’s Seven Natural Wonders – the sea is rich in lobster. Much of the catch goes straight to the capital, Luanda; but there is still plenty for those who wish to buy and cook their own.

Unique conditions lead to amazing wildlife

T

he Benguela Current flows north along the west coast of South Africa and Namibia and interacts with the warmer Angolan current flowing south.

This co-mingling of warm and cold currents causes highly productive upwellings. These create the ideal living conditions for populations of fish, seabirds and marine mammals as well as providing shelter for important migratory bird populations in coastal lagoons and bays. These include the beautiful flamingo, the city symbol of Lobito.

Selected species include the Cape horse mackerel, hake, pilchard, rock lobster, Southern right whale dolphin and the rare Heaviside’s dolphin. Sightings of gentle whales and groups of joyful dolphins are among the highlights of any boat ride along the Benguela coast.

Turtles Five species of marine turtle can be found along the coast of Angola and Lobito’s north beaches, notably Egito Praia, are a breeding place for the olive ridley turtle. Its nesting season runs from September to March, peaking between November and January.

All this rich marine life, together with a variety of sunken ships, adds up to some of the best diving spots on Angola’s coast. They include the Baía dos Elefantes and the Praia da Caotinha.

tretching 200 km from north to south, the Benguela coast is home to some of West Africa’s best and least crowded beaches.

The most popular of these are Egito-Praia and Caotinha, both nominees for the Angola Natural Seven Wonders award.

Egito-Praia, about 40 km north of Lobito, is a delightful small beach at the mouth of a river, set beneath a splendid colonial fortress on top of a mountain overlooking the sea.

Egito Prais is a small fishing village known throughout Angola for its lobster. Here, a natural beach has been set aside for turtles.

Clean beaches Just before Lobito, there is Anha Beach, at the mouth of the River Anha. Lobito has its own very clean sandy beaches, including Praia Bebé, known for its traditional bimba boats, made from the very light wood of the bimba tree. Fishermen make long trips in these bimba boats to catch hammerhead shark. In the heart of the city is trendy Restinga, a beautiful 4 km long stretch of

sand that offers on one side its beaches facing the bay, popular with families with small children due to its calm waters, and on the other side the thriving ocean facing beaches with many beach cafes, which are very popular at weekends. Boat tours are available, or try some canoeing or more radical, a jet ski.

Unexplored South of Lobito and all the way to Benguela there is about 40 km of white sand beaches, largely deserted and almost totally unexplored.

In Benguela the Praia Morena, the city’s cosmopolitan beach, can be crowded at weekends, either on the beach itself or just strolling around the marginal where several restaurants can be found. Just south of Benguela are the province’s best-known beaches: Baía Azul, named after the striking blue colour of the sea, a weekend spot for Benguelan citizens; and Caota and Caotinha, with the most transparent water in Angola, ideal for snorkelling.

Then all the way to the province’s southern border there are truly outstanding beaches.

They include Praia da Lua and Baía dos Elefantes, both famous for shipwrecks.

As viagens aéreas dentro de Angola são relativamente fáceis, com vôos diários a partir de Benguela para Luanda pela TAAG, transportadora aérea nacional, Sonair e Fly540, podendo as passagens ser compradas no próprio dia. O recém inaugurado aeroporto internacional na Catumbela irá começar a receber vôos internacionais diretos a partir deste ano.

Vistos Um visto de turista tem a validade de 30 dias. Para obtenção de visto é necessário uma carta convite emitida por uma empresa ou um cidadão angolano. Os vistos podem ser prorrogados por 60 dias, no Serviço de Migração e Estrangeiros em Benguela.

Clima Subtropical influenciado pela Corrente de Benguela, o planalto central e o deserto do Namibe. A melhor época para visitar é Junho a Setembro, quando é mais fresco e seco.

Saúde e segurança Viajar em Angola é mais seguro do que os turistas imaginam, desde que as regras básicas sejam observadas.

Leve sempre consigo uma fotocópia de seu passaporte. A malária pode ser um problema em algumas zonas, pelo que deve consultar um médico antes viajar, e fazer a medicação preventiva e o uso de mosquiteiros e repelentes.

Condução A rede rodoviária foi reabilitada, embora seja recomendado veículo 4x4 quando se sai fora das vias principais. Existem muitas agências de rent-a-car disponíveis, embora seja recomendado o uso de carro com motorista.

Transportes públicos O transporte público está ainda pouco desenvolvida fora das cidades, havendo no entanto serviços de autocarro regulares entre as principais cidades. Existem várias empresas de táxi privadas em Benguela e no Lobito, sendo fácil chamar um táxi a partir de qualquer hotel.

Serviços ferroviários Há serviços regulares diários entre Lobito e Benguela, com várias paragens no percurso. Para o Huambo existem dois serviços semanais. Os serviços regulares até Luena, na fronteira leste do país, serão implementados durante este ano.

Currency Kwanza (Kz). Not convertible. US dollar is widely accepted.

Money can be exchanged in banks, exchange agencies, and most hotels. Local ATMs rarely accept foreign bank cards.

Credit cards accepted by major hotels and airlines. American Express not accepted.

Visas A tourist visa lasts for 30 days. Independent travellers require a letter of invitation from a person or organisation in Angola.

Visas can be renewed for 60 days in Benguela at the Department of Immigration.

Climate Subtropical climate influenced by the Benguela Current, the interior mountains and the Namib Desert. Best time to visit is June to September when it is cooler and drier.

Health and safety Travel in Angola is safer than outsiders imagine as long as basic rules are observed. Always carry a photocopy of your passport. Malaria can be a problem in coastal areas. Consult your doctor before leaving and make full use of medication, mosquito nets and other preventative measures.

Air connections Direct flights to Luanda from Paris (Air France), London (British Airways), Brussels (SN Brussels Airlines), Amsterdam (KLM) and Lisbon (TAP). Flights within Africa to Luanda from Brazzaville (Congo), Harare (Zimbabwe), Johannesburg (South Africa), Kinshasa (DRC) and Windhoek (Namibia).

Twice-weekly flights from Windhoek to Lubango. Air travel within Angola is relatively easy, with daily flights from Benguela to Luanda by TAAG, national carrier, Sonair and Fly540, and flights can often be booked the same day. The newly opened international airport in Catumbela is expected to start receiving international direct flights this year.

Driving Road network is being improved, although a 4x4 vehicle is needed for most journeys off the main roads. Quite a number of motorists now make the journey from Namibia.

There is a choice of car rental agencies, although visitors are advised to hire a car with driver.

Public transport Public transport is undeveloped outside the cities, although local buses are relatively comfortable. Private taxi companies are spreading, and easy to call a taxi from any hotel.

Rail services There are regular daily services between Lobito and Benguela, with several stops on the way. Services up to Huambo are limited to twice a week. Regular services up to Luena, east border, will be implemented during this year.
