Nursing The William Preston Turner School of Nursing is committed to preparing graduates for professional roles of caregiver, leader and consumer of research through didactic and clinical learning experiences. This philosophy has made Lander a trusted leader in nursing education for more than 50 years – and it’s why our graduates find employment in a wide variety of nursing settings, including county and regional hospitals, private and public clinics, and longterm care facilities. Graduates are eligible to take the national examination to become licensed as registered nurses. Lander also offers an online RN-BSN option for licensed registered nurses, as well as an online master’s-level Clinical Nurse Leader program. Exercise Science Exercise science majors get an in-depth look at all aspects of the human body, from anatomy, physiology and stress response, to how to teach someone to become a competent mover. Lander’s well-equipped facilities (exercise physiology and teaching laboratories, an elevated walk/jog track, aerobics and dance studios, and a state-of-the-art fitness center, just to name a few) allow for hands-on training, and students have opportunities for professional development through off-campus internships and servicelearning projects. Graduates are prepared for careers in public, private and corporate fitness programs; physical, occupational and cardiac rehabilitation programs; and strength and conditioning programs.
Biology Biology has been – and will continue to be – a marketable degree for those seeking careers in the medical, genetics and medical research fields. Lander’s biology programs are designed to provide exceptional classroom and laboratory instruction, as well as quality undergraduate research experiences, such as studying the biology of local freshwater ecosystems or examining the cellular physiology of microscopic organisms. Plus, the world-renowned Greenwood Genetic Center provides opportunities to gain valuable experience in genetic research.
Pre-Professional Studies If you are considering going into medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy, or occupational or physical therapy, Lander’s pre-professional programs in these fields are excellent preparation for advanced study. Our pre-professional programs combine early, individual advising with relevant, experiential learning, allowing students to tailor their studies to meet the requirements of the graduate schools of their choice.
Psychology Psychology majors learn to think logically and objectively by exploring the science of psychology, from its history and methods, to current major issues and research techniques. Our undergraduates put their skills into practice by volunteering with local service agencies and through presenting original research at state, regional and national conferences. These experiences ensure students are able to approach and gather information, conceptualize problems and arrive at reasonable conclusions – skills that are applicable to nearly every professional field.

Signature Programs Management/Marketing, Health Care Management and Financial Services Woven into each of these business administration degree emphases are topics relating to professional ethics, innovation and international business. Students examine real-world issues, conduct case studies on regional economies and consult with corporate leaders for team projects. These experiences challenge the business administration major to think beyond the textbook for a truly global understanding of commerce. As a result, the variety of careers available to graduates of these signature programs is limitless. The management/marketing emphasis focuses on sharpening decision-making skills for business operations and exploring methods to meet customer needs through product development, distribution, promotion and pricing. The financial services emphasis enables students to gain knowledge and insight into various segments of the industry – from banking and real estate to investments and insurance. Students in the health care management emphasis learn fundamentals of business while taking an in-depth look at the health care delivery system, preparing students for managerial responsibilities in health care settings.

Criminology and Criminal Justice Lander’s criminology and criminal justice programs provide a solid foundation for graduate study and careers in probation and corrections, law enforcement, juvenile justice and natural resources. Students explore topics and themes shaping law enforcement on local, state and national levels, gaining a deeper understanding of the complex world of criminal justice.
Homeland Security and Emergency Management The homeland security minor and online master’s degree in emergency management examine the many potential threats our nation faces, helping students recognize and analyze the issues associated with those risks. By reviewing all phases of a crisis – from prevention and preparedness to first-response and recovery – students learn how to provide expert guidance during emergencies in the private, public and nonprofit sectors.
Cybersecurity We live in a digital society, one that is vulnerable to data hacks, financial terrorism, destructive viruses and other issues that can disrupt our daily lives. Because of this, cybersecurity is considered one of the most critical areas of national security. The cybersecurity minor introduces students to various aspects of this comprehensive field, from network security to cryptography and computer forensics.
Government Administration Students in Lander’s political science-public administration major and public administration minor delve into the challenges and opportunities within government administration on multiple levels, from public budgeting to international politics.

Mass Communications and Media Studies This versatile signature program prepares students to become effective communicators through the written word and voice, as well as through traditional and innovative media technologies. Beginning as freshmen, students gain experience in PR, video production, television, film, radio, web, print, performance and more. They hone their skills in a media-rich environment, including the state-of-the-art LUX TV studio, equipped with a high definition video production suite, teaching and editing labs, audio recording booths and greenroom studio. Students can also get involved with XLR Lander Radio, the Forum newspaper and the annual Lander Film Festival and Short Film Competition.
Teacher Education The U.S. Department of Labor reports that projected growth in K-12 student enrollment over the next 10 years will create an increased demand for highly qualified teachers. To meet this need, Lander has invested in its broad array of teacher education programs. Our education students work closely with their professors and community educators before stepping into the classroom to teach children in public and private school systems. Lander graduates are heavily recruited for employment throughout the Southeast, and many are named district teachers of the year. Study Abroad
The world is your classroom. Lander is committed to developing leaders for a global environment. By traveling, living and studying in countries across Europe, Asia, South America and beyond, students are able to learn about other cultures firsthand while earning credit for a degree and gaining valuable international experience. Most Lander students choose to study abroad at universities in Europe, such as the University of Winchester in England. Students who major in Spanish must study for a summer or semester in a Spanish-speaking culture. Along with traditional semester-, summer- and year-abroad options, Lander also offers shorter study tours focusing on topics ranging from art and music to history and economics. Many of the tours are scheduled in the summer or during spring break. .n Study abroad programs are open to students in all majors. n

Honors College
Broaden your experience. Lander’s Honors College is an opportunity to seek out unique challenges designed around your interests and to build relationships with faculty members and other bright, curious students. The Honors College is a supplement to the traditional college curriculum and fits with any major. Adding a personal flair to your education, Honors classes emphasize discussion, field trips, presentations, hands-on projects and individual research. Along with completing 15 or more hours of Honors-level course work, students are encouraged to pick an enjoyable challenge like study abroad, an internship or an independent project. If you decide to complete all Honors College requirements, you’ll receive special recognition upon graduation. Participation in the program gives you a distinct advantage on graduate school applications and in the job market.

Army ROTC Program
Military Science & Leadership The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at Lander University is designed to enhance a student’s college education by providing unique training and practical experience in leadership and management. Upon graduation, contracted cadets who have successfully completed ROTC training are awarded a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army National Guard or the U.S. Army Reserve. To prepare students to become commissioned officers, the ROTC program combines college courses in military science and leadership with summer training. The military science curriculum consists of a two-year basic course and a two-year advanced course.

The Basic Course, which is open to all Lander students without any military obligation, comprises freshman- and sophomore-level classes that focus on the fundamentals of leadership and personal development. The Advanced Course comprises junior- and senior-level classes and requires students to commit to a military obligation prior to entering the course. Advanced classes focus on developing leadership and tactics, and cadets learn to lead small units through a mission in both tactical and everyday environments. Cadets also attend a 30-day Cadet Leadership Course, located at Fort Knox, Ky.
Did you know... Lander University is a member of the Scottish Highlander Battalion, along with Presbyterian College and Newberry College. Lander’s ROTC program is one of the fastest growing programs in the state.

A proactive approach to success. Lander University offers a number of support services to help ensure that all students are able to maintain healthy minds, bodies and GPAs.
The Larry A. Jackson Library The Larry A. Jackson Library is the perfect place for research and study, with spaces for individual and group work. The library provides a robust collection of books and other media, as well as online full-text access to hundreds of top-quality academic and scholarly journals in all subjects. Additionally, the university can borrow from any academic library across the nation through a free interlibrary loan service. 22
Technology Assistance Located on the library’s lower floor, the large computer commons and Technology Resource Assistance Center for Students (TRACS) provide convenient access to computers, printers and technology support. Our highly skilled TRACS staff can assist students with questions about mobile device and laptop setup, network connection, technology training and more.
Academic Support The Academic Success Center (ASC) offers free tutoring in most subjects by CRLA-certified peer tutors. In addition, the center provides academic advising and intervention programs, study skills classes, freshman transition programs, and transfer advisement/registration assistance, among other services. The ASC also works with the Wellness Center to provide a quiet, comfortable environment where students with documented disabilities may take tests.
Health Services Physical health services are available to all students on a walk-in basis at Lander’s Wellness Center. Campus nurses can also refer students to physicians at Greenwood’s Montgomery Center for Family Medicine, located just a few blocks from campus. Counseling Services Ideally, each student’s university experience is a time of personal, as well as intellectual, growth. Sometimes, however, personal or physical problems can affect an individual so that success and persistence as a student become increasingly tough. Counseling Services, located in the Wellness Center, offers free personal counseling to any student experiencing difficulties on an individual, confidential basis.
Campus Safety Lander provides a 24-hour certified police force to protect those on campus, and to enforce federal, state and local laws, as well as Lander rules and regulations. Officers work diligently to develop partnerships with students, faculty and staff in an effort to increase safety awareness. Emergency telephones that instantly connect callers with police are located across campus, and the university’s loudspeaker siren and text-messaging service quickly notify campus of emergencies. 23

Have adventures to remember. Campus recreation gives students of all abilities the opportunity to compete for fun and to support their favorite clubs and organizations. Your home away from home. When you live on campus, you’re in the heart of all the action – and you’re an integral part of the Lander community. Learning to live with other students is a rewarding experience, and many roommates and suitemates become lifelong friends. Plus, living on campus offers the convenience of having classes, dining, the library, and fitness and athletic facilities just steps away. Lander’s 10 residence halls range in style from suites to contemporary apartment living. If it’s historical character you desire, the all-female Chipley Hall is a perfect option. Williamston and Brookside offer comfortable suite-style setups, and Centennial Hall’s super-suites accommodate four students and include a living area, bath and four bedrooms. 30
Or, if you prefer a room all to yourself, Thomason and Centennial provide single occupancies. Our newest residence hall opened in 2015 and features double-occupancy rooms with a private bath. Lander offers apartment living in Lide, University Place and McGhee Court, where four students share a kitchen, living area, two bedrooms, and either one or two baths. Bearcat Village, located close to campus, also offers apartment-style living in a community atmosphere and features convenient shuttle service to and from the main campus. All residence halls have private or semi-private baths in each suite – there are no shared hall showers.

Scholarship Opportunities & Tuition Freshman Academic Scholarships Progressive based on student ability and range from $2,000-6,500 per year, based on applicant’s academic credentials. Minimum 1100 SAT Composite/22 ACT Composite; minimum 3.5 weighted GPA. Applicants with an unweighted GPA will be reviewed individually. Out-of-State Fee Waivers Available to non-resident and international students meeting minimum qualifications for academic scholarships; paired with the assignment of other Lander academic scholarships to help offset out-of-state tuition. Fellowship and Outstanding Scholar Grants Awarded to incoming freshmen and valued at up to $2,000 a year, based on a student’s achievement in national or state scholar competitions (e.g., Palmetto and Teaching Fellows). May be used in any residence hall, but the student must live on campus. Distinguished Freshman Scholarships $500 leadership scholarship awarded to a highly select group of incoming freshmen demonstrating leadership and excellence while in school. Study Abroad Up to $2,000 and limited in number; helps cover part of the cost of the program of the student’s choice. Awarded to incoming freshmen and may be used in either the junior or senior year of college. Affinity Housing Grants $2,000 per semester and applied only to Brookside Residence Hall. These are limited in number and available to students, beginning in the freshman year, in three areas: • ROTC cadets, select Boys’ & Girls’ State participants, and students who have demonstrated leadership ability • Leaders and participants in recreational groups • Students with academic ability who have demonstrated financial need

Transfer Scholarships $2,000 award per year for up to three years. The Financial Aid Process Maximizing your potential for financial aid begins with your performance in high school. Several grants and scholarships rely exclusively on high school grades, rank in class, and/or ACT/SAT scores. Take the ACT and/or SAT prior to your senior year. You may want to take the tests more than once. During the fall of your senior year, apply for admission and submit your transcript and test scores to Lander. Institutional scholarships are awarded based on high school credentials and a completed application for admission. Make sure your admission application is complete by Nov. 15 of your senior year. You and one parent must obtain an FSA ID from the U.S. Department of Education at fsaid.ed.gov. You can apply for FSA IDs at any time but make sure you apply no later than October of your senior year. With your FSA ID, you can apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov. You must reapply every year, no earlier than Oct. 1 but before Nov. 1 to meet the priority deadline.

Applying for Admission All students are encouraged to apply for admission to Lander. Because student success depends in large part upon readiness, the university reserves admission to those students who can demonstrate adequate preparation for higher education, either through appropriate GPA/standardized test scores (ACT/SAT), or through previous success at another postsecondary institution. First-Time Freshmen: First-time freshmen are required to submit proof of high school graduation or GED completion, standardized test scores (either ACT or SAT), and high school transcripts. International students are also required to supply TOEFL or IELTS test scores. Transfer Students: Transfer students are required to submit proof of high school graduation and transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended. Students are considered for admission to Lander from an accredited junior or four-year college if they have a 2.0 (C) or better GPA (4.0 scale) for all courses attempted at the last school attended; they must also be academically eligible to return to all previous institutions. International transfers must supply TOEFL/ IELTS scores or proof of completion of college-level English or an appropriate ESL program.
