elcome! Please accept this as your invitation to our 7th Big Gully Farm Bull Sale on Thursday, December 10. The sale will again take place at the farm, beginning at 4:30 p.m. MST. We would love to host you, along with your family and friends, for supper and drinks at this pre-Christmas event. Our sale introduction is long, but also an opportunity to familiarize folks with our breeding program. We must first express our gratitude to those who have invested and supported us with their previous purchases; we try our best not to take that for granted. The first of two new sale additions we must mention is a group of approximately 20 Hereford females, exposed to Simm/Angus bulls for mid-April calving. As our herd size has grown, we have the ability to intensify selection in regards to age, EPDs, markings, etc. As such, our annual goal is to offer an increasing group of proven purebred females as commercial cows whose progeny will have complete hybrid vigour and fit into the calving window of many commercial cattlemen. After removing cull/open cows, we believe this group is functional and can provide merit in a commercial circumstance. They will likely sell in groups of three; please inquire with questions regarding these females. The second addition is a few Angus bulls from prominent sires to complement our offering for the large number of herds utilizing them. These bulls have maternal strength, but also growth, calving ease and soundness. It will be our 11th year utilizing www.LiveAuctions.tv, which will broadcast simultaneously with the live sale. An updated version-LiveAuctions.tv 2.0 recently launched this fall, so you will need to create a new account and register prior to the sale to allow a relaxed and prepared evening of viewing online. A synopsis of the overall offering this year would first be a superior set of dams behind the bulls, more than ever before with regard to udder quality, productivity, center body dimension, and maternal character. The 2-year olds are relatively conservative in birth weight, big bodied, sound L A N C E & S H A R I LE AC H M A N

structured, and maternal. The bull calves are high quality, great structured, and likely have more performance and growth-oriented pedigrees. Several possess genetic profiles for an array of traits that would be hard to duplicate. Our goal is keeping the commercial cattleman and future of the business at the forefront of our decisions. For us, this involves considering each source of information available: visual appraisal, pedigrees, herd tours, longevity, EPDs, genomics, ultrasound, production records, etc. We believe acquiring exceptional genetics is paramount, regardless of location, to successively generate more profitable and functional cattle or beef for each segment of our industry’s supply chain. The caveat for us is genetics of this description will only be purchased from people who we respect and trust due to their passion, professionalism, integrity, and work ethic put forth in their family-owned-and-operated herds. We are nowhere close to where we hope to be, but that margin for improvement provides humility and motivation. Briefly looking forward, the 2021 calf crop will feature a heavy dose of owned sires on the horned side and conversely a large AI sire influence on the polled cows. The AI sires we utilized all share maternal excellence, but also incorporate carcass merit, performance, and power. We feel Herefords have a tremendous opportunity in the commercial bull market to transmit unique breed strengths of structural integrity, docility, longevity, hair, hardiness, and feed efficiency, if given the opportunity by cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. A real opportunity exists to inject hybrid vigour and added pounds in so many largely Angus-based commercial herds to develop British-based baldy females that could be sold for a premium or be retained for mating to performance sires. When feed grains/hay/forage/land costs increase or become scarce, creating efficient, low input, sensibly-sized, crossbred cows that can still produce performance-sired feeder calves with heavy pay weights just makes sense. Structured crossbreeding scenarios offer undeniable

economic and production benefits and Herefords offer a maternal component with excellent compatibility to any breed.

CRR 27A MISSION 921

Purchased from Coyote Ridge Ranch in LaSalle, Colorado. Horned, performance sire with power, bone, scrotal, carcass and maternal strength.

NJW 133A 6589 MANDATE 115G ET

Purchased from NJW Polled Herefords in Sheridan, Wyoming. Horned, performance sire with calving ease, length, pigment, scrotal and maternal excellence.

The value of a Hereford bull is quite high in our view, considering the best in the breed can still be accessed relatively affordably, while also realizing their temperament, structural integrity, and normally conservative development lends itself to increased longevity and a larger number of lifetime services – factors that sometimes hinder the breed’s ability to merchandise more bulls. As proponents of EPDs, we have put considerable selection pressure on them for generations. You don’t have to look any further than the drastic gains in marbling that Angus has provided the industry to see they are one of many effective tools available for genetic improvement. When coupled with selection for physical conformation, EPDs help evaluate traits that the most capable eye cannot distinguish. We currently measure: calving ease, birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, mature cow weight, scrotal, teat size, udder suspension, ultrasound backfat, ultrasound ribeye and ultrasound percent intramuscular fat on every eligible animal in the herd. All sale bulls have been parentage verified and offer genomically-enhanced EPDs, revealing a higher degree of accuracy regarding the true genetic merit of cattle at a younger age. The bottom line is we believe in raising the most physically impressive, maternally superior cattle we can, while developing strong, multi-trait genetic profiles in those same livestock. Discriminating against any one of those isn’t an option, though it would certainly be easier. Included with purchase, each bull will be developed through to next spring, double vaccinated with Fusogard, calves ultrasounded for carcass merit by Shari, evaluated for breeding soundness, and delivered only when the buyer is ready for them. The size of our operation allows flexibility to not push bulls on you if you aren’t ready. Unforeseen circumstances can potentially arise with semen testing and breeding, so as a precaution the bulls have been scrotal measured by our veterinarian to assure satisfactory development. However, if a concern after spring breeding soundness evaluations or during actual breeding arises, our intent is to be honest and straightforward in doing anything we can to find a satisfactory outcome for you. This means having spare 2-year olds, a variety of yearlings, and potentially our herd sires available for you to utilize. We prefer finding an agreeable substitute bull or reimbursing your money, but avoid issuing sale credit. Another change to reward our customers is the modification of the BGF Learning Award. With the initial funding utilized, we are altering the award to allow our customers to help us choose young cattle enthusiasts deserving of financial support. With each bull purchase, the buyer may put forward two nominations of young people aged 7-25. The nominations will be entered in a draw for three prizes of $1,000 from us. The award can be put toward the purchase of an animal, a workshop, education, or anything related to cattle. Nominations can be used on the same person twice and can include children, relatives, friends or any young person believed deserving. We would love to have you attend in person, but previewing the bulls any time prior to sale day is also highly encouraged and welcomed! If we can be of any assistance or answer any questions in sorting through options that may best suit you, please call, text or stop in.

The Power of Genomically-Enhanced EPDs The Canadian Hereford Association has embraced the use of genomics into their genetic evaluation by launching a first of its kind single step analysis that utilizes the marker effects of specific traits. Likewise, CHA is directly estimating accuracy values rather than approximating. The direct estimation of accuracy results in a more conservative value, but a more accurate value than previous methodologies. The CHA is producing the most reliable genetic evaluation that is supported by Whole Herd enrollment and genomics, which will give prospective buyers added confidence in purchasing young and unproven animals.

Buying animals that have a genetic profile incorporated into their Expected Progeny Difference offers many advantages that allow for quicker breed and herd improvement. Below is a table showing the average increase in accuracy when buying a young animal with a Genomic Enhanced EPD versus an animal without a GE-EPD. Similarly, an effective progeny number increase is listed by the trait that shows how many progeny equate to a genomic enhancement of a young animal (e.g. yearling). That’s right, buying a young animal that has been genotyped is like having 2-17 progeny, depending on the trait. The proof gained on young, non-parent animals, through a genomic enhancement is valuable and greatly mitigates the risk and allows for more directed selection.

“Endeavor” is a big, hairy, high performing son of the “4013” bull that excels for an array of traits. The growth in his progeny is legitimate, while also incorporating carcass merit and maternal strength. 9H is big bodied, bold ribbed and fully pigmented out of a larger framed “Umpire” daughter. Considering his weight per day of age, he still arrived at a modest 86 lbs. His genetic predictions read as strong as any option in the offering. GE EPD

A long bodied, level designed, sound structured “Mr. Canada” son out of a beautiful “All Star” daughter-who along with her dam were the first females picked in our Phantom Creek cow purchase. This bull weighed among the heaviest group at weaning, while being slightly younger in age. The refinement of udder, milk and maternal strength of this bull should be among the strongest we can offer. GE EPD

We think the combination of structural integrity, quality, performance, pigment and maternal strength make this bull intriguing. He is engaging from the profile, flexible on the move and couples the muscle and center body dimension indicative of his “Umpire” sired dam. This calf is younger as well, but should offer as much performance as any of the older bulls as he continues to mature. GE EPD

“Vaunted” is one of two three-quarter brothers out of the “Cowcamp” bull from Ned & Jan Ward. Our herd has a heavy “88X” influence for a variety of reasons and this son did an excellent job for us on a large group of heifers. We have never had a bull calve in such a narrow, conservative range for birth weight. Like his paternal sibs, “Vaunted” is dark red, short marked, muscular, attractive and especially bold in his upper ribcage. Calving ease is built in as well from the “Famous” influence of his dam.

“Vintage” is a moderate, deep bodied, heavy structured son of “Frontier” from Mrnak Hereford Ranch. “Frontier” had one of our largest sire groups and has added a notch more scale and performance, along with center body dimension and a look that we think should mesh with commercial cattleman. The dam of “Vintage” is a big ribbed, excellent uddered female who easily maintains condition and transmits dimension. GE EPD

Probably the standout of our calf crop from pasture turnout to current time is “Statesman”. We think the physical build in combining growth, masculinity, center body dimension, muscle, balance and structural integrity is relatively unique. Just as exciting, his dam is excellent uddered and productive with a convincing multi-trait genetic profile. “Statesman” is mid-February born, but generated the most weight of any at weaning. We would like to retain in-herd semen rights on this bull. GE EPD

“Dignified” should produce excellent females, considering his dam is a “Ribeye 2011” daughter-the most productive sire group of females in production currently. The udder quality and milking ability is impressive, yet the females are sensibly sized and maintain their body condition. “Dignified” is long, level designed, smooth shouldered and correct structured. His combination of balance, structure, performance, body and muscle is pretty unique coupled with maternal merit. The “International 54D” progeny consistently resemble each other in regards to an attractive look, extra center body dimension and a square build off their rear skeleton. This son is high and correct in his neck/ shoulder attachment, remains strong down his back, is big ribbed and travels with ideal flex in his lower joints.

Polled/Horned Inheritance Unfortunately, one of the biggest misunderstandings regarding the proper fit for Hereford bulls is horned/polled inheritance. When understood, it can provide more flexibility to use horned or heterozygous polled bulls on many commercial cows than might be expected-if avoiding horns is the intention. For this example, heterozygous polled cows might be a set of F1 black baldy females out of Angus and Horned Hereford. Consider homozygous polled cows as a set of long time straightbred Angus. Online Bidding SALE START The sale will begin at 4:30 p.m. MST on December 10. Videos of the sale lots can be viewed at www.biggullyfarm.com. HOW TO PARTICIPATE In order to participate in the auction online you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. Go to the LiveAuctions.tv website, www.liveauctions. tv, and select Big Gully Farm Bull Sale (you may need to create a user name and password if this is your first time). After logging in select the link that says, “register for a buyer number.” This form requires you to fill out your bank’s name, city, state, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous. HOW THE AUCTION WORKS Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If you click on a lot, the video clip or photo will be displayed to

the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out.” No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable. WHAT IS A PROXY BID? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every

time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen, no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT.” But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid. QUESTIONS/ASSISTANCE If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact Nicki Ross, 587-377-1580.

Terms & Conditions TERMS OF SETTLEMENT: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlements must be made with clerks of the sale before cattle will be released. Payment terms can be arranged if you discuss them with Lance prior to the sale. BIDS & DISPUTES: Every animal in the video sale will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will be re-opened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time.CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Hereford Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for

each animal immediately after payment has been made. LIABILITY: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, the auctioneer or owners assume no responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of an accident or loss of property. INSURANCE: We strongly recommend, but do not require that insurance is purchased for full value on each animal sold. Several insurance providers can be suggested if the buyer chooses this option. US FUNDS & EXPORT: Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. Big Gully Farm will do all the health testing and export papers required for shipment. We will deliver the cattle across the border and assist in further shipping arrangements from there. Cost is the responsibility of the buyer from that point on. ANNOUNCEMENTS: All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned

to pay close attention to such disclosures. HEALTH: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements. Calves are given Inforce 3, Once PMH, Toltrazuril and Vit. A/E & Selenium. At turnout, calves receive Bovi-Shield Gold One Shot, Tasvax 8 and Ivermectin. Two weeks prior to weaning, calves receive Bovi-Shield Gold FP5 and Ivermectin. Heifers and cows are vaccinated with BoviShield Gold FP5 and Tasvax 8 one month prior to breeding. Heifers receive Merck Guardian and booster prior to calving, while cows receive a single dose prior to calving. Bulls follow the same pre-breeding vaccination protocol with two doses of Fusogard as calves and a single dose as 2-year olds. All cattle receive Ivermectin twice per year. ABSENTEE BIDS: Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the auctioneer, ringman or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

learningAWARD - EST. 1967 -

We have decided to alter the Big Gully Farm Beef Cattle Learning Award to more intimately give back to the families whose support we have been fortunate to receive through their bull acquisitions. Each bull buyer will receive two nominations to be made out in the name of a young cattle enthusiast between the ages of 7-25 years, who will then be eligible in a draw for three awards of $1,000 each.

Youth must use the award on beef cattle-related experience such as an AI course, workshop, 4-H/breeding animal purchse, animal science tuition, etc. Successful youth may only receive one award per year.
