There’s plenty of sophistication, thanks to the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts, which supports arts education and programming and brings nationally recognized musicians to the area through its acclaimed “On Stage” series. The Northern Neck Symphony Orchestra, a full-sized orchestra made up of professionals, talented amateurs and student musicians, performs several concerts annually. The Orchestra’s varied repertory includes standard symphonic works and Broadway scores. The Lancaster Players, a dedicated group of volunteer actors and backstage personnel, showcase local dramatic

The Rappahannock Art League is the oldest visual arts organization in the region. Artists in all media regularly display their work at RAL’s Main Street gallery in Kilmarnock, where everyone is welcome to sign up for workshops or view exhibits. Special sessions are organized for youth. An affiliation with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts allows RAL to bring experts in a number of fields to the area. Drop by on the First Friday of each month for a reception and the unveiling of a new exhibit. Join RAL members for tours to galleries and museums along the East Coast. During the holiday season, shop for that special piece of artwork. Rappahannock Community College’s Kilmarnock Center offers courses for anyone interested in getting a college degree or exploring new areas of interest. The Lancaster Community Library carries a range of popular fiction and nonfiction and a collection of reference volumes. The library is wired so patrons can access numerous data bases, including ones that allow you to complete genealogical projects.

Settled by the English in the 1630s, Lancaster County is home to intriguing historic sites that preserve and exhibit the area’s important heritage. Principal among these is Historic Christ Church, the best preserved of colonial Virginia’s Anglican parish churches, where an exhibition gallery provides a striking introduction to the church and surrounding area in bygone days. Another surviving colonial church, St. Mary’s Whitechapel, was built by an ancestor of President James Monroe with funds provided by the Ball family, ancestors of our first president.

The Morattico Waterfront Museum is housed in the former Moraticco General Store.

Lancaster is the birthplace and childhood home of Mary Ball Washington, mother of George Washington. A stop by the museum named in her honor is worth the trip. The Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library has set out to preserve and honor the historic buildings of Lancaster Courthouse. Exhibits at the Steamboat Era Museum recreate the days when steamboats water transport was the principal means of travel to and from the region. The nearby Reedville Fisherman’s Museum chronicles life as a fisherman and how a small fish called menhaden changed the industry forever. Of course there’s more than history to Lancaster. The County offers excellent recreation, art, shopping, dining, entertainment, parks, and so much more.

From farm to cork… … the bountiful harvests from land and sea await you in Lancaster County.

The Northern Neck is known for its aquaculture. As the sun rises on the Rappahannock you can see a scattering of deadrises, long white boats with cabins seemingly pushed up against the bow, long, open decks behind with short sides. Local watermen are likely harvesting crabs or oysters. Picked from the water at the peak point of ripeness, fresh oysters are packaged and distributed to Lancaster County restaurants, seafood shops, and grocery stores by local watermen. Chefs who specialize in preparing local fare in traditional or innovative ways transform these plump morsels into the centerpiece of signature dishes that let you know why Rappahannock River oysters are prized around the country. And the crabs are pretty tasty, too! Interested in seeing how these delicacies are harvested and learning more about Lancaster’s rich aquaculture heritage visit the Morattico Waterman’s Museum or schedule a Northern Neck Heritage Tour with an experienced waterman. Agriculture is another industry on the Northern Neck that boasts a long history. Many specialty farms grow crops that make their way from farm to fork within hours, because local farmers often sell directly to consumers or make

their produce available at Farmer’s Markets such as the Irvington’s Farmer’s Market. This bustling, open-air market features local fruit and vegetables, herbs, seafood, flowers, baked goods and more operating the first Saturday of each month from May through November. In addition, on almost any day in the spring, summer and fall at key intersections in the county you’ll find roadside stands stocked with justpicked produce. To learn more about the rich history of the farming families, visit the Northern Neck Farm Museum located in Heathsville. The sandy soil and nearby water source make the region a great place for a newer enterprise, viticulture. Over the last decade local wineries have been growing their own grapes and processing award-winning wines. The vineyards have tasting rooms on the premises, where you can sample reds, whites and excellent blends certain to please even the most discriminating connoisseur. When you pick up a basket of fresh corn or tomatoes or squash, a bottle of local wine and a quart jar of fresh oysters you’ll be able to taste the pride and hard work that goes in to making each of these available from farm to cork.

Giving Back

Volunteerism… … is a way of life in Lancaster County. The community “can do” spirit manifests itself in a number of activities designed to improve our quality of life and assist those in need. Here’s a sampling of some of the organizations where Lancaster County residents volunteer their time, talents and treasure:

The River Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross serves as the first responder in times of natural or manmade disaster, assists families in notifying members of the Armed Forces of family emergencies, conducts blood drives and provides education on matters of health and safety. That’s a tall order—one that would be impossible were it not for a cadre of dedicated volunteers, says Chapter Executive Director Julie Dudley. The Chapter is always looking for people who want to be trained to assist at the next emergency, because even in the idyllic Northern Neck responding to natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes can require hundreds of helping hands. The Northern Neck Food Bank serves as a vital link between sources of nutritious food and our neighbors in five counties. Under the visionary leadership of executive director Lance Barton, the Food Bank has refocused its efforts on obtaining fresh, healthy food products so those it serves can receive nutritious produce and staples to improve and maintain their health. Today, a small staff and more than 18

700 volunteers harvest fresh produce from local farms, stock the Food Bank’s warehouse and transport items to more than two dozen food pantries where those in need receive the benefits of volunteers’ efforts. Lancaster County residents will no doubt turn out for the 2014 American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life being held this year on May 17. The combined Lancaster/ Northumberland Relay will be held at Northumberland High School, and Lisa Goodall of the American Cancer Society says that teams are forming now. The event generates great excitement and awareness of the need to support efforts to find a cure for a disease that affects millions of Americans, many of them our friends and neighbors. Goodall says volunteers are needed for planning and on race day. The Northern Neck Free Health Clinic has been providing free health care services to the Northern Neck and Middlesex County since 1993. Since that time they have been able to serve over 11,000 individuals and provided over $60 million dollars in health care services. With volunteers working in the medical and dental clinics, as well as the pharmacy, and mental health services to drive down cost. The clinic also hosts well-woman clinics, group diabetic clinics, and healthy back clinics. Ask anyone associated with these groups and you’ll learn how important the contributions of volunteers are in making Lancaster County a great place to live, work and visit.

In the past two decades, the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic has served 12,000 individuals and provided $65 million worth of care, through medical, dental, pharmaceutical and mental health services, specialty clinics, referrals and outreach.

More than 400 volunteers help turn every $1 in donations into $6.60 worth of health care.

Windmill Point

… is easy in Lancaster County. Sparkling creeks and marshy wetlands extend like fingers from the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay into farmlands cultivated for nearly four centuries. Ribbons of hardwoods and conifers shelter hundreds of species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. It’s a landscape best appreciated up close.

A visit to Belle Isle State Park is like a journey back in time. Roads and trails take you past cornfields and old barns that remind you of the Northern Neck’s farming heritage. Veer off toward Deep Creek for a view of the Rappahannock River, where you’re likely to spot waterfowl including geese, ducks, egrets and herons. Families of osprey make the river home during the summers. Be sure to scan the skies, as you may be rewarded by the sight of a hawk or a bald eagle soaring above the treetops. If you’re adventuresome, rent a kayak or canoe and get a breathtaking view of Mulberry Creek and the Rappahannock River shoreline. At the Hickory Hollow Trail, ten interconnected pathways wander through variegated woodlands down to the edge of inland marshes. The area is a favorite spot for birding, and detailed signs describing the species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers are scattered along the trails.

Prefer a shorter trail? Check out Baylor Park Nature Trail. The half-mile path along Norris Pond is a serene retreat where beautiful natural scenery and an occasional glimpse of wildlife will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Amble down the half-mile Chesapeake Trail, maintained by the Northern Neck Audubon Society for those who enjoy natural landscapes. If hiking along the beach is your passion, travel north from Kilmarnock to Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve or nearby Dameron Marsh. Pristine beaches stretch along the Chesapeake Bay, accessible by trails through verdant tidal wetlands teeming with bird and insect life. With a little luck you’ll see a pelican gliding over the waters or a school of porpoises cavorting in the Bay. Be sure to take a camera to capture the sights that will make your visit to Lancaster one to remember.

Step back in time and try duckpin bowling at Evan’s Bowling Center. A special highlight in late July that is always a hit with kids is the annual Kilmarnock Firemen’s Carnival. This oldfashioned carnival features a Ferris wheel, water dunk tank, cotton candy, funnel cakes and nightly bingo. When the children are ready to stretch their legs, let them enjoy one of the area playgrounds which are within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Take them for ice cream at Stevie’s in Kilmarnock or the Country Cottage in White Stone. Drop by to see a ball game at Dream Fields. Summer activities, including a number of camps, abound in Lancaster. The Lancaster Community Library hosts reading programs and events for all ages. Youngsters can explore the arts in workshops and camps through the Rappahannock Art League or take part in the Lancaster Players’ summer drama workshops.
