elcome to our exciting Summer 2020

Programs Guide! We are bursting with enthusiasm for all things SUMMER. I love spending time outside in the sunshine, swimming, and traveling. It’s also a great time to learn something new or focus on a passion! We want LCDS to be your go-to Summer Fun Zone! This summer at LCDS will include more programming than ever before and we have something for everyone, from preschool through 12th grade. Have you always wanted to learn tumbling? We have that. We are transforming LCDS into Hogwarts! We’ll have wands, potions, and spells for muggles and wizards! US Courses for Credit will give students entering grades 9-12 the opportunity to participate in intensive study during the summer and make room in their schedule for more electives during the school year.

Week 1 | June 8-12 Travel around the world and visit new countries! We’ll use our imagination, learn about cultures and traditions on other continents, and create with arts and crafts.

9 Weeks of Themed Summer Fun Join us for a fun-filled summer on the beautiful 27-acre campus of Lancaster Country Day School.

Each one-week session offers classes in visual and performing arts, science, sports, water play, and choice time. A different theme is integrated each week through classes and activities taught by a talented team of teachers and interns.

Camp LCDS caters to a wide variety of interests.

Our teachers work hard to provide stimulating, age-appropriate, hands-on activities. Students can explore new endeavors in a safe, supportive environment while having loads of fun! Every morning will include arts and crafts, games, a themed snack, and learning centered on the weekly theme. For full-day campers, the afternoon will include outside time, recreation, and water play.

Take a walk on the wild side at LCDS! Learn about animals we don’t see in our own backyards, investigate unique animals and their special adaptations, and share about your favorite wild animal.

This camp will be out of this world! Join us as we explore the solar system, sample astronaut food, and build a rocket.

If you’re hoping your letter of acceptance to Hogwarts will come in the next few years, this camp is for you. Learn spells, play Quidditch, and create potions with your new wizarding friends.

Cars, buses, trains, and airplanes connect communities and the world. Your little learners will explore the importance of transportation and build models of cars, trains, boats, and more using Kid K’NEX®. Most importantly, they will enjoy social interactions while working with a partner and learning with the group. Get ready for your child to come home with a whole new set of transportation facts!

Making Magnificent Monsters

Children will unleash their creativity in this hands-on monster-themed art camp.

Imaginations will run wild as we use both traditional and non-traditional art materials to create an innovative array of monsters: friendly, fierce, or funny. The week will conclude with a monsterously fun art exhibit of our creative creatures.

Secret Agent Training

Week 8 | July 27-31 (half-day a.m.) $180 Carrie Martens, LCDS Faculty

Agents who attend spy training will go undercover and receive their own secret identity. They will make their own disguises and spy gadgets, which will be included in a spy kit that each student will take home at the end of the week.

Agents will explore some of the science behind being a spy by making their own magnifying glass and invisible ink.

Additional spy skills such as fingerprinting, code breaking, and learning Morse code with flashlights will be taught.

In Snapology’s Castles, Kingdoms, and Wizards program, students will enter the magical world of Snapology; using LEGO® bricks to design their medieval fantasies and have fun with dragons, crowns, knights, and swords.

Immerse yourself in the culture of five different countries through dance, music, arts and crafts, language, cooking and more. Can you perform the Argentinian tango? Have you ever tasted poutine from Canada? How do you say “hello” in Arabic? If you have “traveled” with us before, don’t worry. We are off to five new countries this summer. So pack your bags and get ready for a week full of fun and learning, but without the jet lag.

This camp is about the joy and safety of playing exhilarating games (dodgeball, capture the flag, elimination and more) with Nerf guns. Try shooting at a target while sliding past on an awesome slip ’n slide. Come and join the fun! Material fee: $10

If you can eat it, it may become the subject of your art! On the menu will be painting, collage, weaving, printmaking, and more – involving traditional, as well as a few EDIBLE “art supplies.” You will even have a chance to eat some of your own creations. Material fee: $15, Class limit: 15

Detective Training

Do you love to solve a good mystery?

Do secret codes and languages intrigue you? In the morning at detective training, you will brush up on your investigative skills, such as deciphering codes, analyzing footprints and fingerprints, and learning how to make invisible ink that you can use to fool your parents and teachers. In the afternoon, you’ll put your new skills to the test by trying to solve a different mystery each day, including investigating a crime scene, creating an escape room, and racing to win a photo scavenger hunt. So You Think You Can Dance?

Keep your feet moving with us this summer at our fun-filled dance camp!

Students will learn various dance genres and techniques while exploring their creativity and expression. From ballet to hip-hop, jazz to tap, dancers of all levels will learn and create choreography, culminating in a performance for their families.

Animate a character, design a game, solve a problem and learn programming basics with Scratch! In this camp we will encounter numerous problems and discover how to solve them using computer programming. Topics covered include input and output commands, conditional statements, and loops and functions.

Build and program your own LEGO® robots. Assign tasks to your robot, control behavior, and pass through obstacle courses. Students will learn the basics of robotics and programming.

LEGO® Robotics Advanced Programming

Week 4 | June 29-July 3 (full-day) $330 Joanne Biltz, LCDS Faculty

This is a fun, advanced class using the powerful Mindstorms LEGO® robotics system. Students will explore electrical and engineering concepts, build various robots with different sensors, and use the computer to perform tasks including advanced problem-solving. (Some LEGO® programming experience recommended.) Class limit: 14

Did you ever want to make your own stop-motion animated film? Here is your chance. Learn how to draw a storyboard, make sets and characters, use cameras and computer-capture software, edit your rough footage, and compose an original soundtrack. All you need is patience. Stop-motion animation’s goal is to make inanimate objects appear to move and come to life. Throughout the week you will make several short animated films, exploring different media as you learn the basic skills of animation. Class limit: 10

Sculpture Camp

Here’s your chance to work with a variety of media as you create sculptures in wire, metal, foil, papier-mâché, and cardboard. We will also work virtually, sculpting a figure on the computer and then rendering it with a 3D printer.

Ever wish you were a student at Hogwarts? Now you can be! The magic begins with shopping for supplies in Diagon Alley, arriving at the Great Hall for a sorting ceremony, and getting ready for a full week of witchcraft and wizardry! Classes include Potions, Herbology, Arithmancy, Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Divination. This camp is for first-time Hogwarts students.

We bet your child loves amusement parks, but have they ever thought about the science that goes into building rides and the people who design them?

In Snapology’s Amusement Park Engineering class, students will become engineers of their own amusement park rides, and will learn the core physics and engineering concepts used to make a ride thrilling! Class limit: 20

Hone your problem-solving skills as we observe, compare, and classify evidence and use logic and intuition to solve crimes. We will investigate the science behind crime scenes and evidence analysis as we explore forensics through interactive labs and whodunnit activities.

Topics include: evidence collection, impressions, fingerprints, and hair and fiber examination. Material fee: $10, Class limit: 12

We will explore motion and mechanisms, creating marble runs and exploring linkages and how they create movement.

We will make pop-up cards and try our hand at making automata (kinetic sculptures) using simple machines. This class will be set up as a Maker Space.

You will solve problems, imagine, design and redesign to perfect your prototypes.

Class limit: 24 r

Cooking is not just an art, it’s a science.

Students will explore real biological and chemical principles and phenomena such as respiration, emulsification, oxidation, and chemical reactions. We will do this by making bread with yeast, whipping up a smooth sauce for mac and cheese, and learning the secret to the perfect cookie. We will have a different theme or recipe each day. Kids should bring an apron or wear stainable clothes and be prepared to tie long hair back. We will taste what we make, and, if we can, send leftovers home. Diverse ingredients will be used but we will avoid nuts. Material fee: $10, Class limit: 8

Sensational Summer Strings

Week 8 | July 27-31 (full-day) $330 Greg Woodbridge, LCDS Music Faculty Amy Burkholder, LCDS Music Faculty Prerequisite: Must have completed Book 1 of string method book and played in school’s orchestra for at least one year.

Hogwarts: Year Two

This camp offers an exciting opportunity for string musicians entering grades 5 through 8 (violin, viola, cello and bass).

Student musicians will play in large ensembles, chamber ensembles and take masterclasses taught by experts.

Students will perform for friends and family on Friday afternoon. Students should plan to bring their own instruments and supplies.

Babysitting 101 Week 1 | June 8-12 (full-day) Week 5 | July 6-10 (full-day) $330 each week Cathy Swiatek, LCDS Faculty

Babysitting is a great way to earn extra money, and it’s important to be prepared for all the adventures you may encounter.

During this class you will receive the 7.5 hour American Red Cross babysitter certification course. In addition to having honed babysitting skills, you will graduate first aid- and CPR-certified.

And there’s more! You will learn about infant and child development, and spend time with real infants and toddlers to gain some hands-on experience.

Then you will create your babysitting portfolio. Your bag of tricks will include numerous activities to entertain kids of all ages. As a class, students will role-play various babysitting scenarios and create professional flyers and business cards.

Babysitting is a great way to earn extra money, and it’s important to be prepared for all the adventures you may encounter.

During this class you will receive the 7.5 hour American Red Cross babysitter certification course. In addition to having honed babysitting skills, you will graduate first aid- and CPR-certified.

And there’s more! You will learn about infant and child development, and spend time with real infants and toddlers to gain some hands-on experience.

Then you will create your babysitting portfolio. Your bag of tricks will include numerous activities to entertain kids of all ages. As a class, students will role-play various babysitting scenarios and create professional flyers and business cards.

By discovering the many theorems and postulates of geometry, students will improve their spatial reasoning and logic. The course includes an in-depth analysis of plane, solid, and coordinate geometry, including triangle congruence and similarity, properties of parallel lines, right triangle trigonometry, area, and volume of solids/prisms. Emphasis is placed on developing critical-thinking skills as they relate to both abstract mathematical concepts as well as real world problems. Come flip with us! We will be mastering, perfecting, and trying out new skills. Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn how to safely fall and cartwheel, or explore more advanced tumbling, we want you! Each day we will do some stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as drills specific to various skills. Coach Noecker is a National Rated Gymnastics Judge and has been coaching tumbling and gymnastics for over 20 years. Gymnastics/dance leotards are encouraged. This camp will help young athletes focus on developing foundational athletic skills and the intrinsic motivation to succeed. Fun drills and games to enhance speed, agility, coordination, running technique, strength, flexibility and injury prevention will be used. Each athlete will be provided with a Functional Movement Screen and Kinetic Chain Assessment to personalize their training. Basic movement patterns will teach athletes how to develop game-changing speed and agility, and strength movements will help athletes become powerful, strong, and exceptionally conditioned, while preventing injury. These techniques are research-based and proven deliver results on the court and the field. Class limit: 20

What are Specialty Camps?

Specialty Camps are designed for a wide range of ages and interests. Students participate in each specialty area for a full week. There are both full-day and half-day Specialty Camps as well as Early Birds and Milk and Cookies before and after programs. If a student is signed up for two half-day Specialty Camps, a supervised lunchtime from 12-1 is included. Students may prepurchase lunch each day at the LCDS dining commons, or bring their own.

When is registration?

Registration will open in December.

Summer Programs Lunch

Students on campus for the lunch hour (full-day or two half-day sessions) may preorder a nutritious lunch through our LCDS dining service. This two-week rotating menu will be offered throughout the summer. The cost of lunch is $25 for the week. Lunch must be preordered by the week prior to camp.

What is the LCDS Summer Programs cancellation policy?

Before May 1, you will lose your deposit.

What is the late pick-up policy?

Parents will be charged a late fee of $10 for each 15 minutes (or portion of 15 minutes) that they are late per child regardless of the reason for being late.

Payment is due at the time of pick-up, and the camper may not return to camp until the charge is paid. A late fee form must be completed, and a copy given to the parent as a receipt for payment.

Lunch must be preordered the week prior to camp.

Can I pay by credit card or check? YES! If choosing to pay by check, your spot will not be held until payment is received.

All students are welcome, however, be sure to check the age requirements for each program. Any child who has completed kindergarten in the 20192020 school year may attend the Camp LCDS programs. Preschool and junior kindergarten entry ages are: 3 for PS and 4 for JK by June 1, 2020. PS and JK students must be potty-trained prior to the start of summer programs.

What is the difference between Camp LCDS and Specialty Camps?

The Camp LCDS is geared toward students entering grades 1-4 interested in a weekly, theme-based camp experience.

The Specialty Camps are geared toward students in a variety of grades and offer a more in-depth experience in a more specialized class or topic.

Are there extended hours?

Early Birds runs from 7:30-9 a.m. each morning and Milk and Cookies each afternoon runs from 4-5:30 p.m.

All students are welcome to sign up for these extended programs and must be registered to participate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Summer Programs

Is there drop-in care through the extended hours program?

No. All campers must be pre-registered for extended camp programs. Campers need to be registered for Early Birds and Milk and Cookies by the Friday before the week that you need extended care.

What should each student bring to the Camp LCDS Program each day?

Each student should bring a water bottle, snack, and hat. Please be sure to send your student to camp with sunscreen already applied. We are happy to help reapply during the day with your written permission. Full-day campers should bring either a packed lunch or pre-purchase lunch through our online system. Full-day campers will also need a bathing suit, towel, and water shoes.

What should each camper bring to the Specialty Camps each day?

Each student should bring a water bottle, snack, hat, and lunch if they are staying for lunch (or purchase lunch through our online registration system). Teachers will also send out information if anything specific is needed for their program.

What shouldn’t students bring to the LCDS Summer Camps?

We strongly discourage students from bringing electronics such as iPods, cell phones, MP3 players, playing cards, personal games, large amounts of money, or other valuable objects.

Bathing suits, towels, and water shoes are required for water play.

My student has food allergies or other special health circumstances.

Can this be accommodated?

We are happy to work with you and your student to make sure that they are safe.

Please be sure to clearly explain all allergies and other medical concerns through the online camper registration forms.

What if my child wants to cancel or switch classes/camps?

If cancellation occurs before May 1, you will only lose your non-refundable deposit. After May 1, there are no refunds. To switch camps, contact Director of Summer Programs Heather Woodbridge at 717-392-2916, ext. 492 or woodbridgeh@lancastercountryday.org.

How do I guarantee my child is registered with their friends?

Only the legal parent(s) and/or guardian(s) are authorized to sign off on the registration form. This is a safety and legal precaution. The only way to increase the possibility of being in the same program with a friend is to try and complete the registration simultaneously, but under their own accounts. If an account is found to have multiple students registered that are not their own, their camps will be canceled.

Can I purchase lunch on a daily basis throughout the week?

No, all lunch orders must be paid in full one week prior to the start of your camp.

We are not able to accept cash in the cafeteria. All lunches must be preordered, and cost $25 for the week.

Students are to behave in a mature, responsible way and to treat others with respect.

When a camper does not follow the behavior guidelines, we will take the following actions as problems progress.

Staff will redirect the camper to more appropriate behavior.

If inappropriate behavior continues, the camper will be reminded of behavior guidelines and the camper will be asked to decide on age-appropriate actions to correct their behavior.

If a student’s behavior still does not meet expectations, they will be referred to the Director of Summer Programs and may miss out on an activity or the remainder of the day. Parents will be responsible for early pick-up if necessary.

If inappropriate behavior continues, the student may be dismissed from the program.
