Croeso / Welcome to another digital issue of Grapevine Another inspired theme, ‘Diolch’, set many months ago before we had even heard of Covid-19. Who would have thought that so many people could have joined together to express gratitude on a regular basis through the worst of this pandemic? The front cover shows just a tiny snapshot of the vast array of rainbows that have appeared all around the town and indeed the county, to thank the thousands of frontline staff and key workers who continue to do a fantastic job keeping the country safe and functioning. It seems that here in Ceredigion, we have all been playing a part to keep ourselves and others safe, and this has helped to keep cases low (the lowest in the whole of Wales). I reckon we all deserve some thanks for that, don’t you? It will be important in the coming months, as the restrictions are relaxed a little, to take time to reflect on these unusual times.

How has Lampeter coped with Covid-19? We want to hear your stories.

Hello everyone, I hope you are keeping safe and well in these difficult times. I have been very impressed by all the rainbow paintings I have seen displayed in so many windows in support of our care workers and vital services and this got me thinking. What about planting a rainbow? Gardening is the most rewarding domestic activity which the whole family can take part in. I think we are all familiar with the saying, ‘If you stand at the end of a rainbow you will find a pot of gold!’ Well, I’ve not been that fortunate yet, but even though the gold would be extremely useful, as a gardener I could certainly make use of the pot! The rainbow is made up of seven different colours, red, orange, yellow green, blue, indigo, and violet. An easy way to remember the order is an old saying: ‘Richard Of York Gave Blood In Vain (1483), (or a modern version is the fictional character ROY G BIV). So, let’s plant up the pot (or window box or trough). You will need: some compost or a grow bag a bit of grit or sand for drainage (mix them together - like making a cake) a container (make holes in the bottom) a few stones (I put these in the bottom of the container) a bit of screwed up newspaper (also for bottom of pot, for moisture and to save on watering). Now to the plants… With some lockdown rules being lifted you are now allowed to visit a garden centre or plant nursery, and some local stores sell plants too. For RED, I would choose: geraniums, salvias, poppies ORANGE: calendulas, marigolds, gazanias, begonias, and lots of others YELLOW: again begonias, petunias, antirrhinum, granvias, mini sunflowers GREEN: is already there with the foliage BLUE: forget-me-nots, iris, cornflowers, lobelia and many more INDIGO: lavender, clary, purple pansy, fuchsias, purple gladioli VIOLET: verbena, campanula, veronica, scabiosa, violets too and chives Keep the plants watered (though not when they are in hot sun) and as they grow, they will need some food (just like we do). I use tomato feed, once a week is enough. Now you can sit back and marvel at your rainbow creation. Maybe you can sing a few lines of ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’!! Whatever you do, enjoy your ‘in the garden’ at home summer and stay safe. DEA Ps. Did you know the Iris is the Goddess of the Rainbow, and you can eat calendulas in your salads. 4

Dear Madam, I noted in the last issue (April/May, Issue 78) there is an article entitled ‘Welsh Culture Is World Culture – Part 5 Karuna Virus and the Hidden Treasure of the Holy Name.’ (page 6) Part of it says “With no rules or restrictions on chanting as a concession to this degraded age, those holy names have been proven so powerful as to eradicate disease (a very effective method of keeping the Corona virus at bay!), bring peace into conflict zones and raise consciousness to the highest degree.” While in no way wishing to disrespect anyone's religion, I don't think that chanting is going to eradicate the Covid-19 virus, and such a claim should not be allowed in the Grapevine. I thought that Sarah Ward's article on restoring old photos was a refreshing change from Plastic Free Lampeter, Extinction Rebellion, recycling of crisp packets, Permaculture etc. What about more factual articles and news on economic regeneration and other subjects of broad interest. Ceredigion County Council thanks Ceredigion residents for keeping to the restrictions and for following Welsh Government advice. In the United Kingdom, more than 30,000 people have died from the coronavirus and more than 1,000 people have died in Wales. Although the figures remain relatively low in Ceredigion, this is not the time to be complacent. Ceredigion County Council’s priority is the health, wellbeing and safety of the county's residents, and actions are in place to ensure that this will not be compromised. By adhering to the rules that are in place, we can keep the number of people infected by the coronavirus in Ceredigion low. Most shops and businesses remain closed, and people should only go out to buy food, for health reasons, to exercise locally, or to travel to work, but only when it’s not possible to work from home. Remember that you should keep a distance of 2m with other people, wash your hands often for 20 seconds, and not go out if you have any symptoms of the coronavirus, are waiting for a test or test results, or if you have a confirmed case, and you must follow the self-isolation rules. While the Welsh Government has announced that Councils can start planning for their re-opening, the Council will only re-open those facilities when it is safe and appropriate to do so. Further information will be available in due course regarding future arrangements. Thank you to everyone who is adhering to these guidelines in order to keep Ceredigion alive and kicking.

INCREDIBLE EDIBLE / BWYD BENDIGEDIG GROW-NEWS

Whatever else may be going on in the world, Mother Nature has her own rhythms and seasons. And right now it's the growing season in Wales. The new Bwyd Bendigedig Garden for Parc Orsedd in Lampeter, is, needless to say, on hold for the time being. Once the lock-down is over, planning will begin to build it. But, in the meantime, the news from the already established beds around Lampeter are as follows: The water butts at the newly re-furbished Co-op have been re-connected and were filled by the good dose of rain we had recently. So, they are ready for use. And the plants in the Co-op beds are doing a nice job growing in the sunny weather we've been having. In fact, some of the veg have started bolting and will need cutting back down. On the whole, the beds are looking fine and some folk have been harvesting already. A word of Thanks to a neighbour of the Co-op who has been watering the plants. The Custard Queens' beds at the Washtub are also looking nice and green and are ready for harvest as well. At Watson and Pratts, the mini Forest Garden is shooting up after its Winter hibernation. The beds at the entrance are full of veg and can be harvested. These Incredible Gardens are only there because of a small team of Garden Guardians. So, if there are folk reading this who want to check out Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed, you can find us on our Facebook page, ediblellambed, to get in touch and hopefully volunteer. The aim is to re-plant the Co-op and Watson and Pratts beds with Summer crops around the end of May and beginning of June. If there is a valuable lesson from this pandemic, it's that we need Local Resilience and Food Sovereignty. Many thinking people have pointed out for decades how ridiculous it is to have food supply chains thousands of miles long. It puts us in a precarious position. And this pandemic has proved it. One positive outcome from this event is to put Local Food security squarely on the political and economic agenda.
(Plog is a word I’ve invented – it’s like a blog, but on paper instead of online, although it’s now online under lockdown!)
When you stand among the congregation of a Welsh church, singing a well-loved hymn at the top of their voice, it’s something you remember. Your whole body vibrates with the sound, and with the sense of their love and their traditions. I’m not a practicing Christian myself, though I count myself a believer in the best of it all, but I couldn’t help feeling the power of the moment. The refrain of the hymn was “Diolch yn fawr”; and they sing it as two syllables, “dee-olch yn fawr, dee-olch yn fawr”; it has a curious ancient feel to it. Well, what brought this to mind is this month’s theme, “Diolch”. Of course you will know that Christians have a long-standing tradition of giving thanks before meals – called ‘saying Grace’, from the Latin for thanks – and in my childhood they said Grace afterwards as well. You might not know that the Hindus, Muslims, Confucians, Jews, Buddhists, American Indians, and many other peoples, also make a point of making a mark of gratitude before they eat – and often at other times, such as when they wake up and before they sleep. It’s mostly just us that take what we have for granted and don’t appreciate the gift. Right now we have a lot to be thankful for, more than ever. We have health, mostly, we have food, mostly, and shelter – and we’re not at war, being bombed like our parents or grandparents were. People living in other countries often have a lot less of these basic essentials, as you know. Our government is not arresting people wholesale, or persecuting minorities with hate campaigns or trying to build walls to keep them in confined areas. We have a lot of freedom to think, to move about, and to express ourselves, even if we disagree with what’s going on. I reckon that we ought to be grateful for what we do have, starting with the simple fact that we are alive and have a chance to make the most of the life we are given. It’s not like being a sheep in a field, is it? What an opportunity it is, when you stop and consider what it would be like without all this. H ope that our efforts will pay off and we learn from this crisis to make an better future for all At the busiest time of the gardening year we have been truly fortunate to work outside through this lockdown period and have even been able to appreciate the good weather (a watering regime has had to be introduced much earlier than normal). Minor glitches with non-germination of parsnips can be frustrating but we will overcome! The ornamental garden has never looked so good and encourages us to share more plants with others. Our little roadside shop has perennials, annuals, herbs and even a few vegetable plants for sale and there will be fresh veg soon. Our profits all go to the NGS charities, as gardens are closed at the moment, and Macmillan Nurses and Marie Curie etc. are in even greater need of our support this year as they have no income from their closed shops. Great thanks to our customers who have enabled us to raise ÂŁ265 so far (mid-May). We look forward to welcoming you, once restrictions are lifted, as there is plenty of space to socially distance in our garden and woodland.

Mae hi wedi bod yn amser rhyfeddol yn yr ysgol yn sgil y Coronwfeirws. Ond er hyn mae staff a disgyblion wedi parhau i weithio ar-lein gyda’i gilydd. Un o heriau plant y Meithrin a Derbyn oedd i lunio enfys liwgar i ddangos eu gwerthfawrogiad i’r Gwasanaeth It has indeed been strange times in school due to the coronavirus. But the staff and pupils have continued to work together on-line. One of the tasks for the Nursery and Reception children was to create a rainbow to show their appreciation to the NHS. Here are the efforts of Gwyn, Eleanor, Arwen, Lilly-Beth and Beca.

Years 1 and 2 have been busy building bug hotels and learning outdoors. Thank you Molly, Alfie, Maisy, Llew and Cadi for showing us your work. Capel y Groes held a successful on line event this year and pupils of Ysgol y Dderi enjoyed competing. Congratulations to Tomi-Jac on coming 3rd in the literature competition for Key Stage 2 and to Beca on winning the recitation under 12 and coming 2nd in the solo. Year 5 and 6 have been busy creating potions and writing acrostic poetry as well as completing challenges given by the Welsh Childrens Poet, Gruffudd Owen. The Healing Potion Once consumed, this potion will make you a medical hero like all the NHS workers who are helping to fight the Virus. After consumption, the potion will give you the knowledge to be able to help treat and heal anyone who suffers from a fatal illness; you will have the knowledge and the know-how to help anyone you come across. To make this potion you will need, Equipment: Three gallons of determination A pewter cauldron 2 litres of courage A silver knife A bowlful of wisdom on what to do A large spoon & whisk Two tons of intelligence A large bowl A pinch of love Mortar and Pestle An endless supply of patience A wand A sprinkle of happiness Method: Heat your cauldron to 600 degrees over a large open fire. Whilst your cauldron is heating up to the desired temperature, let’s prepare the ingredients! 1. Use the pestle and mortar to Crush the bowlful of wisdom. 2. Pour the determination and courage into the bowl and mix well. 3. Next, slowly add intelligence to the bowl, making sure that there are no lumps, stir slowly and evenly until you have a smooth texture. 4. Check the cauldron is at the right temperature, then add the mixture of intelligence, determination and courage, and bring to the boil. 5. Return the mixture to a simmer, then stir in the endless supply of patience. 6. Simmer for 10 minutes until the mixture starts to thicken. 7. Turn off the heat, and let the mixture cool for 20 minutes 8. Once cooled, you should have a dough like mixture. Take this dough and roll it into a ball. Take your silver knife and slice into two halves and sprinkle with happiness. 9. Pop the two halves into the cold cauldron and repeat these words whilst waving your wand above it; “Heal them all, protect the weak, words of wisdom you shall speak.” Gan Bo

Method 1.First add the jug of patience to the bowl of happiness. Whisk together for 30 seconds. 2.Then add the teaspoon of kindness and mix in with a wooden spoon. 3.Next pour in the case of hope and use your fingers to mix together. 4.Add the lifetime of fabulous, then knead into a ball. 5.Don’t forget to add a pinch of love for flavour, then roll the ball out flat. 6.Sprinkle over with friendship before using the heart cutter to cut into heart shapes. 7.Put the heart shapes on a tin, place in the oven for 20 minutes. 8.When cooked don’t forget to serve with a smile. 11

Ceredigion Museum has an exceptional collection of quilts, bursting with social history and stories about the past, which will be exhibited once visitors can be welcomed back to the museum. Two new quilts, one real and one digital, are going to be added to the collection, to help commemorate shared experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic and to capture the experiences of the community during this transformative moment in time. Ceredigion Museum is asking the public to get involved with the project by sending in content to be displayed on both of the quilts. COVID-19 is affecting the lives of the global population in unprecedented ways, causing a huge shift in social and working lives. The aim of this project is to explore the values people may want to leave in the past and those to take into the future. Ceredigion is no stranger to isolation and quarantine, we have faced several epidemics, including smallpox in 1738 and 1819, cholera in 1840, the 1918 flu pandemic, and typhoid in 1946. What patch would you place on the quarantine quilt? Everyone can get involved by sending the Museum voices, videos, photos and sound pieces, to reflect a broad range of experiences across Ceredigion. From those working on the front line to those working at home, to those embracing new skills, from parents turned home-school teachers to the older generations adopting online get-togethers and young people technologically partying. Examples could include, something that illustrates how physical spaces have been transformed – the quieter streets, the resurgence of nature; the effects on key and home workers; life without school, online homework, the things that have made people laugh and cry, a favourite P.E. session with Joe Wicks, the clapping for carers, face timing relations and friends, the random acts of kindness or the repeated Stay Safe, Stay Home messages? The Quarantine Quilts will form part of Ceredigion Museums exhibition ‘Quilts: Human Threads’. This exhibition explores these objects as gateways to fascinating stories and social histories, and considers how remarkable they are for both their exquisite craftsmanship and their emotional resonance. Ceredigion Household Waste Sites to reopen for essential use only 01 June 2020 Household Waste Sites (HWS) across Ceredigion are to reopen. Residents are urged only to visit the sites if this is essential (if the waste items can’t be stored safely at home or if they can’t be collected as part of the usual domestic waste collections). New site rules are as follows: Vehicles with an even number registration number will only be allowed access on the even days of the month (e.g. 2,4,6,8.10,12 etc.) Vehicles with an odd number registration number will only be allowed access on the odd days of the month (e.g. 1,3,5,7,9,11 etc.) There will be a strict limit on the number of cars that are allowed to access to the HWS at any one time A maximum of two persons from the same household can leave the vehicle to dispose of waste and assist each other with bigger or heavier items at the site; no help will be available by the site staff to unload any items Residents are only allowed to enter the site with a vehicle; residents arriving on foot will be turned away No reuse of items is permitted – the sites are for the deposit of waste only and residents will not be allowed to take away items from the sites No vans or trailers will be allowed to use the HWS at this time The HWS is for domestic waste only. No trade waste is accepted at the HWS. The above are in addition to existing site rules. Before visiting a HWS, residents should: Sort waste at home prior to arriving at the sites Be prepared for long queues to enter Remain in their vehicles at all times whilst queuing to enter Await direction from a site attendant before entering Wash their hands thoroughly before and after visiting; residents will need to bring their own Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. gloves, masks, visors) if desired Stay at least 2 metres apart from other site users and staff Respect and be considerate of other users Respect and adhere to the instructions and guidance of the site staff - Dispose of waste as quickly and safely as possible before leaving the site in an orderly manner. Stay away from the sites if they or anyone in their household has Covid-19 symptoms or are currently shielding. The following do not constitute ‘essential’ journeys to the HWS at this time: Taking a bag of garden clippings or grass cuttings. Advice on home composting can be found on the Council’s website: https://www.ceredigion.gov.uk/resident/bins-recycling/garden-waste/composting/ Taking the old cupboard, tea set, sewing machine etc. which has been stood in the shed for years Taking the contents of an attic or shed clear-out Old clothes from a wardrobe clear-out It is likely these can either be composted, stored at home safely or taken to the HWS sometime in the future at what is likely to be a quieter time. Fflur received 2nd prize in recitation for 10-12 year olds, 2nd for KS2 artwork and 3rd for Solo 1012. Great work Fflur.

24 Ebrill 2020 Mae ysgolion uwchradd Ceredigion wedi mynd yr ail filltir i gynhyrchu mwy na 2,800 o feisorau mewn ymateb i argyfwng y coronafeirws. Mae pob un o adrannau Dylunio a Thechnoleg ysgolion uwchradd y sir wedi bod yn rhan o’r broses hon, sef Ysgol Henry Richard, Ysgol Penglais, Ysgol Penweddig, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberaeron, Ysgol Bro Pedr, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi ac Ysgol Bro Teifi. Dros gyfnod o ychydig wythnosau, mae athrawon yr adrannau hyn wedi creu feisorau o blastig gan ddefnyddio peiriannau laser neu beiriannau argraffu 3D yr ysgolion, gyda Chyngor Sir Ceredigion yn darparu’r deunyddiau. 24 April 2020 Ceredigion secondary schools have gone above and beyond to produce more than 2,800 visors in response to the coronavirus crisis. Each Design and Technology department in every secondary school across the county have been involved in this process, including Ysgol Henry Richard, Ysgol Penglais, Ysgol Penweddig, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberaeron, Ysgol Bro Pedr, Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi and Ysgol Bro Teifi. Over the course of a few weeks, teachers in these departments have created plastic visors using the school's laser cutters or 3D printers, with Ceredigion County Council providing the materials. Theses visors are necessary to protect frontline workers in Ceredigion, and the teacher’s willingness to offer practical support in these challenging times is commendable. Meinir Ebbsworth, Ceredigion County Council's Corporate Lead Officer Schools and Culture, said: "We are extremely proud of our workforce, and the incredible dedication shown by staff in our Design and Technology departments to provide the necessary visors is just one example of how Ceredigion's teachers have gone above and beyond to help others.”

Somewhere Over The Rainbow Theatr Felinfach is well known as an example of excellence in the field of Community Arts and Participatory Art, but of course like most other businesses and organisations at the moment, it is currently closed. This has not however prevented us from retaining the momentum of the buzz, joy and colour that goes hand in hand with the beloved and remarkable building, and the heart of the community continues to beat. At the beginning of April, the Creative Team set up the 'Imagine' project, with the aim of sharing various creative ideas and activities ranging from micro-plays to character makeovers, creating mini characters or masks out of cardboard as well as various games to play as a family. The staff’s children have also been busy creating posters with messages of thanks and encouragement to place in the large display boxes at the top of the road near the Theatre’s main entrance. Since Wednesday afternoon, 6 May, a beautiful rainbow painted on the exterior wall of the building is clearly visible when passing the building on the main road between Aberaeron and Lampeter. In addition to this, specific rows of the upper wall of the Theatre building, the wall that’s closest to the road has been painted in the colours of the rainbow with a heart motive randomly dotted in between. Dylan Williams, Stage Manager and Theatre Sound Technician has been diligently painting for many days and has done an excellent job creating this happy masterpiece. Thanks Dylan, you’re a star! The rainbow has grown into a symbol of hope and a symbol of gratitude to the frontline workers who put their lives at stake on a daily basis. In between being creative with her colleagues, Sioned Hâf Thomas, our Dance and Theatre Officer has invested in a 3D printer and created protective face visors. Sioned created 27 of these and on Tuesday, 5 May they were transferred to Bryntirion Care Home staff. Well done Sioned, a fantastic effort. We also want to thank AAA Decorating Centre in Lampeter for the colourful and bright paint that they generously donated to us! We have always worked closely with the decorating centre and Ffion, Lynn and Gaynor's daughter has been on the theatre’s stage in numerous productions over the years - from the primary drama club to the Welsh pantomime. As staff of Theatr Felinfach we’re constantly thinking of our friends and customers during these difficult times and hope that the sun is shining on them. We are grateful to all the key workers for keeping us safe. Ceredigion has the lowest number of confirmed cases of the virus by far across Wales. Let’s ensure that it stays that way. The True Cost Chemical Fertilisers (The first of two articles on soil health)
It is common knowledge that plants need fertile soil to grow and the fact that our food supply is totally dependent on good soil. What do we mean by fertile soil? A fertile soil will contain all the major nutrients for basic plant nutrition (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), as well as other nutrients needed in smaller quantities (calcium, magnesium, sulphur, iron, zinc, copper etc.), [Fertile soils also need to have a diverse population of
to human health. Nitrification also releases nitrous oxide which mixes into the stratosphere, where it destroys ozone as well as contributing to the greenhouse effect. One thing very few people realise is that nitrogen fertilizer is produced from natural gas in a process called HaberBosch. Natural gas, essentially methane, is combined with nitrogen from the air to form ammonia to be used in nitrogen fertilizer. 80% of the gas is used as feedstock for fertilizer while 20% is used for the process of manufacture which is very energy intensive. Basically, nitrogen fertilisers are a product of fossil fuels and industrial ammonia production emits carbon dioxide as a by-product which, as we all know, is a greenhouse gas. The European Nitrogen Assessment has estimated that collectively, the costs of nitrogen-related damage are as high as €320 billion, or up to €750 per person every year throughout the EU, about two-thirds of which relates to agriculture. Although intensive farmers get somewhere in the region of a three-fold return for the money they spend on nitrogen fertilizer, because it is not taxed and its production in some countries is even subsidized, the true cost to society is estimated to be up to three times greater still. Recognising the true cost of nitrogen fertilizer would encourage greater use of clover, beans and other legumes which provide nitrogen to the soil naturally and benefit pollinating insects. Farmers cannot be expected to deal with this alone. They have been encouraged for decades to increase productivity with the use of chemical fertilisers. Consequently, policy makers need to look at ways to help and incentivise farmers to move away from their dependence on the use of chemical fertilisers. Good farming practice can help us solve a lot of the problems related to climate change, but we cannot expect farmers to do it without help from policy makers and from the public. Soil scientists focus on soil fertility and are interested in managing nutrients to improve crop production. They focus on using commercial fertilisers, manures, waste products, and composts to add nutrients and organic matter to the soil. However, inappropriate management of nutrients can lead to contamination of lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater. In addition, adding amendments to the soil is expensive and cuts into the profitability of farming operations, not to mention that toxic levels of nutrients can be as bad as or worse than too little nutrients for the plants. Nitrogen is the most commonly used mineral nutrient. It plays a pivotal role in many critical functions such as photosynthesis in the plant. Compared to the 1950’s when most fertilisers used on farms were natural organic fertilisers (lots of manure!), today we’ve nearly doubled the natural rate of nitrogen available in soils using synthetic, mineral fertilisers. An estimated 1/3 of global food production is currently grown using synthetics, with 100 million tons applied to Earth’s surface annually. But its use has come at a price. When nitrogen fertilizer is applied faster than plants can use it, soil bacteria convert it to nitrate. Water-soluble nitrate is flushed out of soils in runoff, where it pollutes groundwater, streams, estuaries, and coastal oceans. In streams and rivers, as on land, nitrate encourages plant growth. When aquatic plants die, their decomposition strips oxygen from the water, causing fish and shellfish to die. Ammonia is a by-product of nitrogen fertilizer and it forms fine particles in the atmosphere that are hazardous

A 16 year old Ysgol Penglais pupil has become an internet statistic sensation during the Coronavirus pandemic. Lloyd Warburton created his website www.coronaviruscymru.wales after posting information and graphs on his Twitter page analysing Coronavirus statistics on-line. He started posting information on Twitter as a pastime following his interest in Information Technology. Lloyd and his family were overwhelmed with interest that the website has attracted. Lloyd said, “I’ve always been interested in maps and statistics and thought this would be a good way to pass the time. I started posting them on my twitter page about 10 days before school shut down and it became a daily thing. My followers seemed to really appreciate my work and it’s grown from there. I decided to create a website and launched it on 29 March so that I could put all the data in one place and make it easy to find and interpret. I’m really grateful for all the support I’ve received, all the advice and recommendations and all the coffee!” Using Public Health Wales information published daily, Lloyd uses the numbers to develop graphs and statistics in a way that was simple to all. It takes around half an hour to create the graphs and publish them on the website. The information is then available all in one place. Mair Hughes, Penglais School Headteacher said, “We are delighted and amazed by what Lloyd has created. He has combined his skill, scientific interest, creativity and intuition to create a website and twitter account that has clearly been of interest to thousands of people across Wales. This has clearly been a difficult time for all Year 11 students and to have created something as professional and useful as this during this time is a real credit to Lloyd. Many congratulations to Lloyd - we are very proud of him.” Lloyd was disappointed he couldn’t take his GCSEs but has a passion for the sciences and is looking forward to returning to do his A Levels in Biology, Geography and Sociology. Originally receiving coffee donations for his work, Lloyd has since received donations, supported charities and bought books ready for his future studies.

Celtic Christianity LV I I I St Caradog Linus was related to the Silurian chieftain Caractacus (Caradog) who was taken to Rome in 51 AD after instigating an uprising against the Romans. Surprisingly, Caradog was pardoned by Emperor Claudius and he and his family were kept in Rome until 57 AD when they returned to South Wales. According to Welsh historical records, Caradog's daughter, Eurgain, brought twelve Christians with her, and as such, was the mother of the British Church. In fact, she had been converted to Christianity whilst in Rome by St Paul. Eurgain's sister was Gwladys (born 36 AD) - also known as Claudia after she married Rufus Pudens Pudentius, a Roman citizen, in 53 AD. Claudia's home, Pallatium Brittanicum (British Palace), in Rome was given to the young couple as a dowry by Caradog and was also used for Christian worship. The church of St Pudentiana now stands on the site. Pudens had vast estates in Umbria and according to the Roman Martyrology, he brought 400 servants from his estates to the Pallatium. The 'Roman Martyrologies' states that in 56 AD: "The children of Claudia were brought up at the feet of St Paul." The second Pope, Clemenus Romanus (Clement) confirmed that St Paul had resided at the Pallatium Britannicum, and had instructed her brother, Linus, the first Bishop of Rome or Pope. Linus is mentioned by St Paul in his Epistle to Timothy, and was buried, according to Bishop Irenaeus, alongside St Peter at the foot of the Vatican hill. Linus was Caradog's grandson and the son of Claudia. The passage by Irenaeus (Adv. haereses, III, iii, 3) reads: "After the Holy Apostles (Peter and Paul) had founded and set the Church in order (in Rome) they gave over the exercise of the episcopal office to Linus. The same Linus is mentioned by St Paul in his Epistle to Timothy. His successor was Anacletus." Eurgain, on her return to South Wales, established a church, which is referred to as 'Cor Eurgain' in Welsh records. This church was established in 57 AD near Llanilltud Fawr. However, the Church in Wales denies this fact, believing that Romans brought Christianity to Britain in 591 by Augustine rather than the evidence that shows it had been here for hundreds of years. The location of the Cor is most probably Caer Mead, a Roman villa on the outskirts of the town. This was last excavated in 1888, and even then only partly, and the findings showed it to have mosaic floors and painted plaster walls. The villa covered eight acres, with its defences. "One of the few Roman civil sites in Wales and was probably built before the middle of the second century." St David's Cathedral reliquary contained bones from the sixth century - believed to be those of St Caradog - and so pilgrims venerate them asking for his prayers. Harry Harrison 29

and long term interests of their constituents. Once they are elected by their constituents they should never need to be re-elected. They will either have a fixed term and/or can be replaced by another local election called for by their constituents. Since national elections and referenda are highly spurious, national leaders must be appointed by the truly representative members who know who are going to make the best leaders to take the necessary steps to reform our systems and save our people and all life on this beautiful planet. In order to address these huge current challenges we need urgent and immediate action – a real wake-up call is essential. (The United Nations is already operating in a much better way than our national governments, but it must move faster on dealing with the so-called ‘global free trade’ system which is highly spurious and works only in favour of the global corporations.) The US and the UK are both bankrupt like many other countries if they do not have endless economic growth. As of April 2020 the UK national debt is £1.84 trillion and has continued to rise in spite of earlier government commitments to reduce it. And so with the dire financial consequences of the Covid-19 outbreak it is quite possible that this will shoot up even further. And what if our UK government is unable to pay state pensions as well as saving the NHS, schools and universities, banks, airlines and all other businesses and employees? UK State Pensions (about £100billion pa) are a huge liability and totally reliant on regular government receipts from taxes – which will plummet as a result of CV19. An incredible disaster may not be far away. However to sit back and do nothing is not a realistic option. We must stop exploiting natural resources in an unlimited fashion; we must not allow the big corporations to pollute and damage our environment without having to pay for this; we must see that all humans are treated as equals and prevent the elite from amassing more and more wealth and using tax havens to reduce or avoid paying their taxes. So somehow or other the mass population must get together to change our political and economic systems. It is a huge task ahead but quite simply lack of appropriate and immediate action will mean that the human species will almost certainly be wiped out. Covid-19 is giving us a real wake-up call. COVID-19 …. A WAKE-UP CALL This unexpected pandemic hits the news headline every day and just like most other news items it focuses mainly on daily shocks rather than the fundamental and underlying challenges that we are currently facing. What are these challenges? For several decades now there has been a deluge of information about one of our biggest challenges - Climate Change. And associated with this are many related issues and others too:- Pollution, Population, Consumption, Limited resources, Energy, Health, Food, Transport, Finance, Politics, Economics Whether our sacred Earth and its inhabitants are to cope with these challenges on a sufficient scale and quickly enough will depend on a huge change of direction. And the Covid-19 pandemic has brought even more attention to the fragility of life on this planet. While the current scenario focuses on food, health and other priorities, there is scant attention drawn to our underlying problems. With endless attention given by governments to economic growth supported by a bankrupt financial system, we humans have to wake up and acknowledge that a finite planet cannot possibly cope with ever expanding demands from a rapidly growing population and increases in per capita consumption. With money created out of the air, personal and national debt can only be repaid dependant on endless economic growth - which is simply impossible on a finite planet. So how have we humans got trapped in such a situation? In a nutshell it can be attributed to a combination of human greed, indifference to our long term survival and the health of wildlife, and political and economic systems which thrive on competition and spurious leadership. What needs to happen? The most important first steps to secure the longer term survival of the human race and nature as we know it are to change our political and economic systems. And this will depend on a combination of democratic action and appropriate leadership - national, regional and global. Our current system is all about competition between winners and losers – making millions and winning elections. This needs to change right now. Time is running out. Rather than a competitive party political system which is greatly influenced by its lobbyists and financial donors, what we need are politicians who truly represent the real 32

With Covid-19 restrictions I’m not sure how many people have been able to complete crossword 62, particularly as it has been a ’stay at home’ time for all.
