Croeso / Welcome to this unique issue of the Grapevine

…the first time we haven’t managed to get a printed copy circulated. These are, afterall, extraordinary times and we find ourselves in a situation that is new to all of us. We our doing our best to accept this as a challenge and not a barrier. You will either be reading this as a digital copy or a downloaded PDF, which may have been printed. This is our way of trying to reach as many of our readers as possible. We hope you may be able to share a copy with someone else (as long as you can do this safely). The current situation may be unfamiliar, uncomfortable and a little surreal but I guess we all just need to learn to adapt. We need to accept new restrictions, support our most vulnerable and play our part in helping our community, our country and the world to survive this pandemic. Little did we know when thinking of themes for Grapevine that ‘Hidden Treasures’ would reveal itself in the way it has. Coronavirus itself is not the ‘treasure’ but I’m sure you would agree that the resulting effects have brought many hidden treasures into the limelight. Think of all the people on the frontline who are battling everyday on our behalf to fight the virus and all those helping to support these workers to continue their essential work; those ensuring the country is fed, or those designing, producing and delivering new equipment; volunteers are stepping up to help reach those who are more vulnerable; and communities are pulling together to do what they can. Welsh Culture Is World Culture – Part 5 Karuna Virus and the Hidden Treasure of the Holy Name When a reporter asked Gandhi what he thought of Western civilization, he replied, “I think it would be a good idea.” In truth, any godless, money-worshipping culture is only ever going to buy itself into deeper and deeper levels of darkness and ignorance. While our present-day levels of technological advancement confer many impressive benefits, blind pursuit of short-term profit accelerated by thoughtless environmental destruction fully confirms the prophetic descriptions in the Celtic/Vedic tradition of a misdirected civilization devoid of capable and properly responsible leadership. Bhagavad-Gita is described as a treasure chest of priceless, non-sectarian spiritual wisdom, illuminating the progressive yoga processes of action (base), knowledge (lid) and pure love (the ultimate treasure within). When God incarnated 5,000 years ago, He required full self-surrender in conclusion to His Gita (song). But when He re-appeared just 500 years ago in the supremely merciful mood of His female half as Shree Krishna Chaitanya, He asked only that all souls chant His holy names as the universal method to attain perfection (80+ names in the Old Testament alone). With no rules or restrictions on chanting as a concession to this degraded age, those holy names have been proven so powerful as to eradicate disease (a very effective method of keeping the Corona virus at bay!), bring peace

into conflict zones and raise consciousness to the highest degree The voice of one principled man alone was sufficient to release India from the oppressive grip of an industrially-driven, money-darkened empire that has attempted but fortunately failed to erase the priceless treasures of our shared Celtic/Vedic heritage from the pages of history. A heritage demonstrating astounding scientific mastery preserved in its megalithic network, fully re-activated and complemented by the supremely powerful harmonic science of chanting the holy names. Happily, the combined voices of God’s children (all of us) carry the full potential to raise mankind out of darkness. Wales, the greatest preserver of the Vedic sciences outside India, is perfectly situated to lead the world’s singers in all traditions in helping Karuna (Sanskrit: kindness, divine mercy) go viral as the most powerful method for counteracting all negative influences and releasing countless souls from the illusory prison-house of godless consumerism. Love has the power to overcome all fear. As my husband wrestles the mould to the back of the fridge, we are mindful of the consequences of inaction.

Our Public Inconvenience Announcement ‘A stitch in time saves nine’ Coronavirus may turn out to be a terrible thing, it may turn out to be a huge fuss over nothing, or it may herald important changes that might actually save us from extinction. The Government has the opportunity to prove it can respond appropriately to an emergency, they have the common sense to prepare for the worst with this virus, similarly – we all have to be prepared to accept and make the changes and compromises which may save our lives. This may be the best opportunity we ever get to learn, practice and hone these skills. There are positives and negatives to take away from this, I have to try and think of the glass half full. It brings this virus into perspective when we are reminded that air pollution alone kills seven million people every year. Yet under lockdown China closed its streets, clearing its skies of the health damaging particulates that force masks to be worn each and every day, and reduced emissions from ordinary everyday activities by a quarter. James Lovelock’s Gaia Theory regards Earth as a living, self-regulating, complex system that has evolved with everything tightly aligned and co-dependent.

The ability of the Earth to rebalance itself – a perfectly natural, restorative thing, that many of us already pray for, may in a way be punishing us for our inaction while at the same time shedding important light on how to react appropriately to the real emergency that everybody tries so hard to ignore; If hurtling towards a precipice from which there is no return, we would instinctively take our foot off the gas pedal, and instantly go for the brakes. Meanwhile idiots like Treasury adviser Tim Leunig argue that the food sector is not 'critically important'... Wendell Berry wrote “The idea that rural and urban America describe two economies, one thriving and the other failing, is preposterous”, joined at the hip, like it or not, we cannot continue to plunder rural communities and nature to create uninhibited urban growth and wealth. It’s the Yin and Yang; something the Chinese understand very well; two principles, one negative, one positive, whose interactions influence the destinies of creatures and things. Hello from Saint Germain sur Moine in France Dear all, As a secretary of Saint Germain sur Moine Twinning Committee, I have been invited by Rob Philipps and the

members

of

your

twinning committee to celebrate Saint David's day last weekend. It has been a very good occasion to learn more about your culture and traditions. We'd like to advertise our town in Grapevine as we think that many people from Lampeter don't know us. I'm sending you a few pictures that we've taken on this wonderful stay in your town.

Laurence Brel-Fonteneau

What qualifies as a "hidden treasure"? It can be a place, a memento or even a person - like the good neighbour, who, quietly and unseen, keeps an eye on an elderly neighbour who lives alone. When one such "hidden treasure", Jan, told us that her next door neighbour, Tilly Williams, wished there was a bench she could sit on as a "rest stop" when she walked up to the cemetery at Capel Caeronnen to visit her husband's grave. Cellan Village Improvement Society Committee members decided unanimously to grant Tilly her wish by providing a bench. After all, as the oldest living resident of Cellan to be born in the village, Tilly is something of a "treasure" in her own right! In the spring sunshine of St David's Day, committee members, Lunch Club members, neighbours and family gathered to present Tilly with her bench, dedicated, in accordance with her wishes, to her late husband, Ivor.

Seated on the bench are: Tilly (centre), son Douglas (left) and daughter-in-law Dee (right)

Thanks to everyone who played a part in making this possible. Could you be a "hidden treasure"? Chris Lambert

Afterwards, everyone enjoyed refreshments in the Millennium Hall.

Hidden Treasures with Y Stiwdio Brint

Plumber’s Plog (Plog is a word I’ve invented – it’s like a blog, but on paper instead of online)

I've been thinking about the theme for this issue, Hidden Treasures, and wondering how to begin because there are so many hidden treasures that I could write about! For example, as we go around the lanes in the district, every now and then we take a new turning, and come across a little shop, or a studio, or a garden centre or something, where someone has set up a little enterprise. Even in the town itself there are new things opening up from week to week, and in the Grapevine there is a new initiative almost on every page. But you wouldn't know about it unless you knew, or were already involved, and so, often these treasures are hidden from view entirely. Locally-made jam or honey, sold at someone’s gate - what better? Even more important than that, the people who are doing these things, doing their best to keep the community alive and thriving, they are also hidden treasures to me. They very often go unacknowledged, and they may go on from week to week with not much reward or recognition for all that they do. Hopefully they will be remembered in the days to come, and their work will bear fruit even if they don't know about it - it might be hidden from them! - as I believe that no effort is wasted in a good cause. But they too are hidden treasures, and perhaps they don't know that they are. Then there's also hidden treasures in the world that we don't see at all: things like kindness, respect, willingness, cheerfulness. We don't see them, they're hidden inside of people, and often we can forget that they're there. But they can make all the difference in a conversation or an exchange between two people (or more). When you have a quality like kindness alive in you, it can spread like a virus, but that's great - don't cover it up with your hanky! And I am starting to think that there must be other kinds of hidden treasures, things we don't know about at all, otherwise they wouldn't be hidden. What kinds of hidden treasures have we never yet imagined, I wonder? Let’s see. Frank Pitcher

One of the greatest joys of having our shop is the privilege of being invited to share in the hidden history of our customers as they bring in treasured photos from the loft, hoping to replicate or digitally share them among their families for sentimentality and safe-keeping. Often these treasures sadly only come to light after someone’s passing, but every so often we see a cataloguing project undertaken whilst the familial knowledge is still widely available – compiling photos and related stories/information together within albums or photo books is a massive undertaking but one that is valuable beyond measure to future generations that often have no personal connection to the people of the recent past. Some of the more exciting items brought in to us at the shop are: A very old, large porcelain photographic portrait that came in to be digitised prior to specialist restoration elsewhere; a beloved photo now in many tattered pieces that had been folded in a wallet for over fifty years brought in for extensive restoration (pictured); ancestral painted portraits brought in for reproduction in their beautifully ornate original frames; and a collection of local photographs from multiple sources that came to be digitised and enhanced to be sent on to Canada for publication in a local history book out there! Having a hand in keeping these treasures alive is such a great feeling, and briefly connecting with their stories via chatting to their keepers in the shop is a lovely and often humbling experience. Reproducing fragile old photos to enable them to be handled once more, means safeguarding the memories that are in danger of being lost in the attics again – and we consider this among the most important tasks we do here at Y Stiwdio Brint. Encouraging Kindness and a Sense of Belonging ... someone else needs. By encouraging communities to get together and connect through kindness and conversation the project hopes that the people involved will be able to build the trust and confidence needed to link up, both locally and to wider support networks within the county. Any activities that take place will be critical to the success of the project and we’ll need your help to make sure that everyone is having fun, doing the things they love and having the opportunity to try out something new (hopefully many new things). We want you to take part, to share with your friends and to come back again and again. We want you to tell us what you need in your community to make it work, local knowledge is going to be a key cornerstone in developing communities that can thrive and flourish. People coming together to do the things they love and to share their knowledge and enthusiasm can bring real concrete benefits to communities and to the service providers who work with them.

2020 sees the start of an exciting new project across the region, “Connect2Ceredigion” The project aims to get people involved, doing what they enjoy and sharing their skills with others. It is a project that will support our communities in Ceredigion to come together, a friendship movement that encourages kindness and a sense of belonging while celebrating the wonderful part of the world we live in.

During the current crisis we have to think differently about how we can support each other, social distancing means that we cannot share a cuppa with a neighbour or meet up with our friends at our local community hall. There are however so many examples of kindness happening all over Ceredigion, people are offering to support each other and to be kind in whatever way they can. Although we are having to physically keep our distance in many ways we are also developing closer knit communities.

Kindness will run through the project, it’s a key part of what will link us together, whether it’s a random act of kindness from a stranger, a neighbour walking your dog when you aren’t able to, or sharing your cooking skills with someone who has never had the opportunity to learn. We all have something that we can give or a skill that

Hidden Treasures - Yr Efail So, we are confined to our garden = our very own ‘Hidden Treasure’ How lucky are we to have a lovely open space to live and work in every day? We are currently closed to visitors, as are all NGS gardens, but look forward to welcoming you back before the end of 2020. We aim to encourage you to grow your own; just one tomato plant or a pot of peas can give such delight – as well as delicious rewards. Children make great gardeners – get them on it! Be inspired by Tregaron’s own Huw Richards’ YouTube channel and his excellent latest book ‘Grow Food for Free’. You can grow seedlings in egg boxes, yoghurt pots and toilet roll inner tubes etc. and April/May is peak sowing season. Try lettuces, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, potatoes, peas, broad beans, runner beans (mid-May), onions, courgettes – Ooops! - I’m getting carried away. Share ideas, equipment and packets of seeds, borrow from a nearby gardener, you can grow in any space and there really is nothing like home-grown veg. Flowers too – especially ones that can also be eaten, like nasturtiums – and of course herbs. We have a year round source of rosemary, mint, sage and parsley. Yes, it can be daunting when slugs are a pest, but persevere and you will be well rewarded. At Yr Efail we are reaching the end of winter staples, (parsnips, leeks and a range of brassicas), and we look forward to fresh, new lettuces, carrots, beetroot, cabbages and radishes from the tunnel very soon. Also, the asparagus bed should be in full production this year. Being able to grow our own vegetables is such a delight for body and soul. Keep gardening – the fresh air and positivity of nature can only make things better. Our best wishes go out to you all. Ceredigion NGS gardeners will be working hard to maintain and further improve your visitor experiences when restrictions are lifted. If you have questions please do get in touch or visit https://ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden to unearth some of the hidden treasures on your doorstep. Shelagh & Steve Yeomans

Yr Efail – Something for Everyone We booked to see Yr Efail, we chose a perfect day And, after a warm welcome, we had a lovely stay There were fine herbaceous borders, a thriving veggie plot. A wildlife pond and woodland, this garden’s got the lot. But it was the polytunnels that really seemed to please, You could almost hear folks thinking, “Wish I had one of these!” by Elaine Izett written after a visit by Ponterwyd Garden Club to Yr Efail in 2019

INCREDIBLE GARDEN GUARDIANS As they say, sometimes you can’t see the wood for the trees. And sometimes a “Hidden treasure” is pretty much out in the open. But, only you can’t see it because it is SO out in the open. What am I on about? Many of you will have noticed by now that Lampeter can lay claim to three Incredible Edible/ Bwyd Bendigedig Food Gardens. The first and most prominent is outside the Lampeter Co-op. Then two more appeared at the Washtub and Watson and Pratt’s. (The next food garden will be built in Parc Orsedd in the Spring.) But, they aren’t hidden at all. In fact, they are deliberately out in the open so that passers-by can both harvest the food and also learn something about local food sovereignty. However, there was no food fairy who magicked these gardens into existence. They were built by a small team of “Garden Guardians”. Incredible Edible UK came up with the name Garden Guardians for the volunteers who build and look after food spaces and who try to spread the Incredible Edible message. OK, maybe the Lampeter Guardians are not so hidden after all. Almost every time they worked on a bed, local folk have come up for a chat and to discuss what food sovereignty and local resilience could mean in our area. As Incredible gardens are designed with minimum input and maintenance in mind - leaving most of the work to Nature - it means that the Guardians need only visit each garden occasionally. However, this does not mean no visit or no work whatsoever. All gardens need tender loving care. Even a minimum maintenance garden. The team hope to be more visible in the future by setting up a portable notice board which will be displayed at an Incredible garden stating when the team will be working there. The idea being to meet local folk and talk about resilience and food. And anything else that’s of interest. So, look out for the notice board next time you visit one of the gardens. Also, if you support and enjoy what the Lampeter Garden Guardians have done and continue to do, why not think about becoming one yourself and Banc Bwyd Llanbed help to care for an Mae angen mwy o bobl ar y Banc Bwyd Incredible garden near you. Multiple Sclerosis Support Group - Lampeter & District - ‘Nature as Therapy’

‘Everyone’s rubbish is someone else’s treasure’. One of our members said this at our last Support Group meeting which has made me think back to days of volunteering in charity shops, helping at my friend’s boot sales, sorting through things that people have no longer any use for, or even any feelings for. Our feelings can be so interwoven in all the ‘things’ we accumulate over the years. Some people are so good at getting rid of these accumulations and others, like me, find it impossible. I know I have many ‘Hidden Treasures’ so hidden I don’t know where they are, but what a wonderful feeling when sorting through junk, I suddenly find something that I had completely forgotten

about. This can, to me, also become a burden… what to do with objects or even clothes that I have loved in the past, or even things that other long-gone members of the family have loved that I just cannot part with! As we discussed in the meeting, so many things are treasures, people are treasures, shoulders to cry on, hands to hold, a special long-distance friend, old photographs, the love of maps old and new, books, memories, archaeology, Operation Julie, the dream of freedom, dawn, health, time-capsules, hidden letters, the finds when doing building work on Cellan church including a hidden door now brought to light, all these things obscured and out of sight but once re-discovered, valued greatly. One day when out with a friend I found a book on birds, hidden away at the back of a shelf. It is a lovely little book with beautiful illustrations. I always know where that book is. It is not on the bookshelves with all the other bird books but hidden away in a cupboard. My own ‘hidden treasure’. We discussed metal detecting and the things that have been discovered, sometimes of great monetary value that then may become treasure trove but other things that have their own personal values such as odd bits of pottery which to the discoverer have great value...history in the garden. A piece of pottery, what was it used for, who used it, was it a valued bit or dumped as a broken bit of no use anymore? But now a valued memory. All these things, often obscure, secret, unseen and very subjective, but when re-discovered are of great personal value. We forget, but others remember. Oral histories and reminiscences, talking with older people...so many memories for us to value. So many ‘hidden treasures’.

Jottings In order to find nature’s hidden treasures the naturalist has to follow a number of clues; a knowledge of habitat and animal behaviour is essential. Failing that, serendipity. Amongst the woods and copses in the upper Teifi valley there are hidden ponds where you can hear the frog and toad chorus in spring, glades where, if the light falls slantingly, you may chance upon the tylwyth teg and, where the woodland is on the moorland’s edge, the lekking ground of the Black Grouse. A number of animals and plants can hide in plain sight. They do this by means of camouflage. The Woodcock for example deploys cryptic colouring; the Buff tip moth and the Red sword grass moth both use shape and colouring to look like bits of wood. Treasure and those who seek it feature in myth and legend. Some elusive species of birds are the object of modern day quests. I have heard a few local bird enthusiasts ascribe such a prize to the Lesser spotted woodpecker. This bird is not much bigger than a sparrow and spends much of its time in the canopy where its black and white plumage allows it to blend in with the thin branches; even when it nests on the underside of a branch it is almost impossible to see. At this time of year birds displaying - especially where the male bird performs a butterfly flight - is a sight to treasure.

CROESO I BAWB/WELCOME TO ALL. Our Support Group meets (when not in lockdown) on the first Monday of the month from 1.30-3.30, in the back room of The Mustard Seed, Lampeter. We welcome anybody with MS, carers, and anybody wanting to know more, from wherever you are. You are also welcome at our Aberystwyth group which meets in Tesco’s community/charity room 12-2 on the 1st FRIDAY of the month. Judith McKay, Support Volunteer, 01570 493509 Hazel Ellis, Chair of Ceredigion Branch, 01974 261640 (See our MS Support Group page on Facebook) Can you spot the ‘Grapevine grin’? Somewhere amongst the pages of Grapevine each issue you will find this sunny smile. Maybe tucked away or perhaps clearly in view? Where will it be this time?

Volunteer@Denmark Farm!

Our volunteer group has had a busy couple of months, and discovered some hidden treasures along the way! During February and March we coppiced willow from our Wetland Ecological Treatment (WET) system. As well as providing willow for our basket-making courses, the larger branches will be used to create paths around the site. We also installed reptile mats (‘refugia’), and carried out frogspawn surveys in our pond and scrapes (small shallow ponds in the fields) and were very excited to find large numbers of developing tadpoles. A pair of mating toads were also discovered (apologies to them for the intrusion!), plus an adult palmate newt. The reptile mats will be checked regularly by our volunteers over the coming months to enable us to monitor our amphibian and reptiles. We also held an owl pellet analysis day for volunteers and local families, and searched for the hidden treasures (also known as small mammal bones!) to be found within barn owl pellets from around Ceredigion. Thank you to everyone who came along and threw themselves into it with such enthusiasm. No two volunteer days are the same – we vary the tasks each time, giving volunteers the opportunity to spend time in different habitats on site, learn new skills, and discover more about the wildlife which lives here. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Denmark Farm is now closed to residential guests, and all volunteer activities, courses and events are cancelled until further notice. Follow our Facebook page, or visit our website for further updates as the situation evolves www.denmarkfarm.org.uk We look forward to welcoming our volunteers back again soon, but in the meantime, if you’d like to find out more

about future volunteering opportunities, please contact volunteer@denmarkfarm.org.uk Thank you to the Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme for funding our current volunteer project ‘Cadw Natur Mewn Côf / Nature in Mind’ Aline Denton www.denmarkfarm.org.uk

Denmark Farm Conservation Centre is a 40-acre nature reserve and will remain open to the public. Over the next few months access to fresh air and nature will be vitally important to everyone for exercise, health and well-being. Please respect staff, our tenant and other visitors (although there are unlikely to be many!) and keep a safe distance. Nature will keep on growing fast at this time of year and without our amazing volunteers we will be struggling to maintain access to trails. In order to help us cover the additional costs of essential site management we are requesting donations from all of our friends and supporters. You can either put your donation into the box in the welcome shelter or donate online: localgiving.org/appeal/DenmarkFarmCovid-19Appeal/ For more info please visit our website www.denmarkfarm.org.uk or call us on 01570 493358 Mara Morris Denmark farm Conservation Centre Facilities and Events Manager 19

Hidden Treasures – What’s the Problem? This issue’s theme made me think fondly of Bill Mollison, the co-founder of Permaculture. Bill was a mischievous man and when he developed his vision for creating sustainable human settlements – Perma(nent)-culture – one of his guiding principles was ‘The Problem is the Solution’. This is the hidden treasure inside any challenge that we face, from small to large and complex. A wry example from Bill that’s often quoted is – ‘if you think you have a surfeit of slugs, maybe you actually have a deficit of ducks!’…especially Indian Runners or Khaki Campbells that have a strong penchant for slimy snacks. This thinking turns issues around and asks, What can we learn from this situation and how does it guide us in terms of our next steps? You can apply this in your personal life, to work, communities and the wider environment but it requires something extra from us. Deep and sometimes patient observation. It’s very easy to jump to conclusions and react in a way that isn’t the best in the longer term – especially in an emergency. Yet if we have the time to take a step back, observe and deduce both cause as well as effect, we’re much more likely to be able to re-design a system that will function better.

A very topical example of this is flooding. Amidst cries to dredge rivers, canalise water channels and raise defences, a wiser, systems-based approach looks at the whole catchment, particularly ‘upstream’ in terms of both land use and the ultimate source of the problem – climate change. A systems approach asks questions such as, Why are we having these unpredictable heavy rain and storm events? Why does water move so quickly through our landscapes? What are the other impacts, such as loss of soils and degradation of our rivers? What can we learn that will help us regenerate more resilient water catchments and communities and reduce the likelihood of these events in the long term? These aren’t easy matters to address and recognising that fact also brings hidden treasures. Our amazing natural world is complex and cannot be reduced to simplistic fixes. The ‘wicked problems’ (ie. with no single solution) that we’ve created as a society will have correspondingly interrelated ‘wicked solutions’ – so we can all play a role in working towards their resolution. Slow down, look around and inside yourself - and your part, your hidden treasures, will be revealed. Angie Polkey, Lampeter Permaculture Group http://www.lampeterpermaculture.org

COTHI GARDENERS Cothi Gardeners are a group of passionate, friendly people with a shared interest in all things horticultural. We meet at 7.30pm on the third Wednesday of every month, in Coronation Hall, Pumpsaint SA19 6UW. Guests are very welcome, ÂŁ3 each including refreshments. Sadly March's meeting was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. It is likely that the April and May meetings will also be cancelled. Please see our facebook page and website for up-dated information. April's planned guest speaker is Bill Law, talking about the studies he has made of 'Artists' Gardens'. The talk will feature the gardens of 20 influential artists ranging from that of Frida Kahlo in Mexico to the Cornish garden of Barbara Hepworth. It will be a fascinating talk with wonderful slides of glorious colourful gardens, how the artists created their gardens and their gardens shaped their work. May's planned talk is by Carley Green on 'Conservation and Propagation of Native Welsh Plants at the NBGW'. The NBGW is contributing to the conservation and propagation of some of the most endangered plants in Wales. The work there has made Wales the first country in the world to DNA barcode all native species of flowering plants and partnerships with other countries is helping them to follow this way. Both talks will be fascinating and we welcome guests whenever these meetings eventually take place. www.cothigardeners.com Facebook.com/cothigardeners

Karen’s Creative Compendium 053 A walk on the beach is often a source of inspiration but images today may sadly not all be picturesque as our race leaves its mark on the natural world. But beauty survives thanks to the restorative tide and the pull of the moon on the cycle of life, listening as our pages turn. The Girl With Two Legs

by Karen Gemma Brewer The Hopi tribe lived in a circular terrace, each bamboo hut sharing plaited leaf walls with neighbours on either side. Weddings were a month long ceremony for the whole community with every home demolished and then rebuilt in a larger ring to accommodate an additional hut for the new couple. A similar but solemner ceremony followed death, with the ring moved inward so no one lived next to an empty hut. Immediately outside the ring was a closely cropped circular strip kept clear of trees and vegetation so leopard had no leaping points, snakes no hiding places and the patrolling rota of Hopi warriors could easily ward off inquisitive wildlife with a flash of flames and banging of drums. Beyond the shorn strip lay a dense circular forest, the Hopi’s natural source of food, clothing and building materials, but also home to all their fears, dangers and adventures. As a race, the Hopi were not designed for adventures. Short, potbellied and one-legged, the dense forest offered more than enough challenges for even the most pioneering amongst them. The forest in turn was surrounded by a steep, sharp, rocky ridge, high and inhospitable, that no Hopi had ever scaled and few had even seen. The forest was offlimits to all but warriors and initiates and took half a season to cross and return, so no one knew what, if anything, lay on the other side of the ridge. Even their stories, and the Hopi had many stories that they shared and embellished every evening, for all their imagination and wonder stretching even to the stars in the sky, never strayed beyond the ridge that marked the edge of their world. Could they have taken to the air, they might have seen they lived in a giant, luscious crater, isolated from the rest of the planet, but the Hopi had no such technology and most never once in all their lives considered there might be any world other than their own. Mtembi was not ‘most Hopi.’ For a start, she had two legs! (to be continued)

Life is listening Like a great warm spirit animal Close around me Tender against my face and hair She knows me My breath moves through Her And every impulse of my being Ripples in the endless ocean of Her unguarded body She is close by where my soul touches the infinite And where my feet meet the earth She breathes within the mother She receives all of me In tender and absolute intimacy She rocks me like the sea And knowing Her I can never be lonely And my best work is ever to take care That my words and thoughts Enter the sacred space of Her body In love And gratitude

A Letter by Polly Phemus Dear Sir Was it in your magazine that I read recently an article by someone called Trevor Potts? Honestly, what on earth were his parents thinking? And I feel sure I've also come across Mr and Mrs Peace and their son Warren; I certainly feel for poor Richard Head who must have had such a terrible time at school. Thank heavens my parents had no discernible sense of humour! Yours faithfully Theresa Green PS. I've just realised I must marry. But not to someone called Brown.
