Croeso / Welcome to this issue of the Grapevine

Whether we are ready or not, the calendar is sliding inevitably into winter… a time of shortened daylight hours and extended darkness. The glorious colours of autumn are literally falling before our eyes. Our poor dog and cat are so confused that tea-time seems to be “so late at night!” For those of us who love sunshine, this inexorable descent seems endless, even though the holidays are meant to signal the joyous realisation that spring might be just around the corner. Good Cheer can be a difficult emotion for some, both to give and receive. Families are split, work or funds may be in short supply, loved ones are ill, the pantry is a bit more empty than usual...the sun is not shining. Someone without a loving support system may try to retreat into the warmth and protective fort of bedcovers and not pop out until the daffs emerge. This Grapevine is full of news and invitations to throw off those isolating walls that we might build this time of year. The Community Christmas dinner is held by people who choose to throw wide their arms and gather everyone in. They allow us to be their family! And while the food will be delicious and fortifying, the work alongside each other can be the best part of the day. Throughout the season, there are opportunities to gather with our neighbours to share food, song, news, gifts, and time. Check out the stories on pages 12, 13, 14, and more. And if it must be emphasised, that gift of time is the most precious. Hold your loved ones close. Forgive yourself, and then others. Tell those people you love how important they are. Do not wait until someone else greets you; instead, be the first to spread the Good Cheer amongst your circle. It will come back to you tenfold. Happy Holidays, and a Most Happy New Year! Carolmarie Chamberlin,

Editor-until-Angie-feels-up-to-it! Darllenwch yn hapus / Happy reading.

Consider a Postal Vote to Save a Wintry Journey to the Ballot Box this Election

Ystyriwch Bleidlais Bost i osgoi siwrnai aeafol i’r blwch pleidleisio yr etholiad hwn

Ceredigion residents are being urged to consider registering for a postal vote for the first December General Election since 1923. With weeks to go until the General Election on 12 December, Ceredigion County Council’s Chief Executive, Eifion Evans says registering for a postal vote could help make sure people have their vote at a time of year where poor weather could stop them from getting to their polling station. He said: “General Elections usually take place in the spring or summer, so we can be all but certain that weather conditions won’t hamper voters. A December election could be different. We all know how the weather can be at that time of year; and if freezing weather and snow showers take place, some voters might not be able to make it to the polling station.” “It’s up to each voter to decide how they vote, but a postal vote could make sure your vote counts even if 12 December is affected by poor weather. Voters can decide to vote by postal vote as a one-off if they usually visit their polling station.” Residents must register to vote before they register for a postal vote. Residents can register for a postal vote by going to the Government website: www.gov.uk/government/publications/ apply-for-a-postal-vote or by calling the council’s Electoral Services Team on 01545 570 881.

Mae trigolion Ceredigion yn cael eu hannog i ystyried cofrestru ar gyfer pleidlais drwy'r post ar gyfer yr Etholiad Cyffredinol cyntaf ym mis Rhagfyr ers 1923. Gydag wythnosau i fynd tan yr etholiad cyffredinol ar 12 Rhagfyr, mae Prif Weithredwr Cyngor Sir Ceredigion, Eifion Evans yn dweud y gallai cofrestru am bleidlais bost helpu sicrhau bod pobl yn gallu pleidleisio ar adeg o'r flwyddyn lle gallai tywydd gwael eu hatal rhag cyrraedd eu gorsaf bleidleisio. Dywedodd: “Mae etholiadau cyffredinol fel arfer yn cael eu cynnal yn y gwanwyn neu'r haf, felly gallwn ni fod bron yn gwbl sicr na fydd y tywydd yn rhwystro pleidleiswyr. Gallai etholiad ym mis Rhagfyr fod yn wahanol. Rydym i gyd yn gwybod sut y gall y tywydd fod yr adeg honno o'r flwyddyn; ac os oes tywydd rhewllyd a chawodydd eira, efallai na fydd rhai pleidleiswyr yn gallu teithio i'r orsaf bleidleisio.” "Mae'n fater i bob pleidleisiwr benderfynu sut maen nhw'n pleidleisio, ond gallai pleidlais bost sicrhau bod eich pleidlais yn cyfrif hyd yn oed os bydd tywydd gwael yn effeithio ar 12 Rhagfyr. Gall pleidleiswyr ddewis pleidleisio drwy'r post am y tro hyn yn unig os ydynt fel arfer yn pleidleisio yn eu gorsaf bleidleisio.” Mae rhaid i drigolion gofrestru i bleidleisio cyn cofrestru am bleidlais bost. Gall preswylwyr gofrestru am bleidlais drwy'r post drwy fynd i wefan y Llywodraeth: www.gov.uk /government/publications/apply-for-a-postalvote neu drwy ffonio Tîm Gwasanaethau Etholiadol y cyngor ar 01545 570 881. 4

Want to say a big thanks to Bernard for turning up at The Repair Cafe and being altogether FAB, thanks to Bernard we now have a more than a passing shot at fixing your electricals – come and find out more at The People’s Market 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, it’s a great place to stock up on local produce and support local businesses. I was delighted that a local farmer took up my challenge to supply local meat, he is striving to rear his livestock regeneratively and deserves all the support we can give him. Manure is a necessary part of our growing cycles and some would say essential to the soil biome, sequestering carbon and building soil. What people miss with the meat-free debate is the acknowledgement of how damaging intensive farming is across the board, impacting nearly ALL of our food at present, understanding that it is not only the planet that is being harmed by intensive farming, but our health too, and that THIS has to change. Going all out against livestock when the farming community is already struggling is not productive. It is essential now to be supporting our local farmers, we’re going to need them more than ever. With all things we need to be consuming sustainably, and locally.

‘Eat less meat — with quality over quantity ’

Quoting Jake Morley’s uplifting lyrics: “Behind every loss is a gift - to start again” ...How many times have you found that things have to get really bad before we acquire the ability for change? Maybe it’s good that Trump and the British Government are sufficiently awful to inspire change. It's all part of the glass half full thing... trying to find the positives, climate change forces us to re-evaluate. We have to ask ourselves what we think we are achieving by staying on the old treadmill - that old treadmill that actually forces us all to do hideous things to the planet - so much of what we strive for is actually illusory, especially in the light of climate change... what better reason do we need to change? Be brave now, we have nothing to lose! Come and join in, show your support online, and keep having these conversations.

My 7 year old son Finn is non verbal and autistic and was attending the autism unit “Envys” at Llwyn Yr Eos school in Penparcau, Aberystwyth until he was excluded at the end of July for challenging behaviour. Our family have been left to cope alone since then. I feel really let down by Ceredigion learning services and have been told that Finn is not in a place to access education at the moment. He is autistic and cannot speak up for himself. This is not his fault but he has been discriminated against because the staff are not trained to work with the more challenging cases of autism. I have started a Go Fund Me campaign to raise £5000 for a play therapy eco pod to be erected in our garden so at least Finn can access some outreach support. The link to my campaign is: www.gofundme.com/f/play-therapy-pod OR www.gofundme.com. It’s the play therapy pod campaign organised by Suzanne Burgess. So far, £570 has been raised, so over a tenth of the way to my £5000 target. I would be happy to chat more by phone. My contact numbers are: 01974 299027 and 07504130719 or you can contact me via email: suzburgess@googlemail.com Kind regards, Suzanne Burgess

Dal amser i drigolion Ceredigion gofrestru i bleidleisio

Ceredigion residents still have time to register to vote

“Mae dal gan drigolion Ceredigion amser i gofrestru i bleidleisio yn yr Etholiad Cyffredinol ar 12 Rhagfyr,” meddai Prif Weithredwr a Swyddog Canlyniadau Gweithredol y cyngor, Eifion Evans. Mae dal gan breswylwyr amser i gofrestru i bleidleisio a threfnu pleidleisiau drwy'r post neu drwy ddirprwy os ydynt am wneud hynny. Y dyddiad cau ar gyfer cofrestru i bleidleisio yw hanner nos ar 26 Tachwedd. Y dyddiad cau ar gyfer cofrestru ar gyfer pleidlais bost yw 5yp ar 26 Tachwedd, a'r dyddiad cau ar gyfer cofrestru ar gyfer pleidlais drwy ddirprwy yw 5yp ar 4 Rhagfyr. Parhaodd Mr Evans, “Efallai y bydd rhai preswylwyr am gofrestru ar gyfer pleidlais drwy'r post neu bleidlais drwy ddirprwy. Gallai hyn helpu pobl i osgoi amodau gaeafol posibl mewn etholiad ym mis Rhagfyr, neu bobl ifanc sydd wedi symud allan o'r sir i astudio ond sy'n dal am bleidleisio yng Ngheredigion.” Gall preswylwyr gofrestru i bleidleisio drwy ddefnyddio'r linc hon: https://www.gov.uk/cofrestru-i -bleidleisio neu drwy ffonio Tîm Gwasanaethau Etholiadol y cyngor ar 01545 570 881.

“Ceredigion residents still have time to register to vote in the General Election on 12 December,” said the council’s Chief Executive and Acting Returning Officer, Eifion Evans. Residents still have time to register to vote and to arrange postal or proxy votes if they want to do so. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on 26 November. The deadline to register for a postal vote is 5pm on 26 November and the deadline to register for a proxy vote is 5pm on 4 December. Mr Evans continued, “Some residents may want to register for postal vote or a proxy vote. This could help people avoid possible wintry conditions of a December election, or young people who have moved out of county to study but still want to vote in Ceredigion.” Residents can register to vote by using this link: https://www.gov.uk/register-tovote or by calling the council’s Electoral Services Team on 01545 570 881.

Dywedodd: “Bydd busnesau bach yn cystadlu yn erbyn busnesau ar-lein am fasnach y Nadolig hwn. Rydym am wneud yr hyn a allwn i gefnogi busnesau Ceredigion ar yr adeg bwysig hon o’r flwyddyn. Parking charges at council operated Pay and Display car parks will be waived on 7, 14 and 21 December 2019. Rhodri Llwyd is Ceredigion County Council’s Corporate Lead Officer responsible for Highways and Environmental Services. He said. “Small businesses will be competing against online businesses for trade this Christmas. We want to do what we can to support Ceredigion businesses at this important time of year. We hope this step encourages more of us to shop locally this Christmas and enjoy what fantastic Ceredigion businesses have to offer.” This decision contributes towards one of the council’s corporate priorities of boosting the economy. 7

News from Transition Llambed You’ll notice that our beds are all looking quieter, though there are some hardy winter greens there: different kales, chard and Chinese mustard greens. They are there for all to pick as Cut & Come Again: take some older leaves from the outside for your meal and allow the plant to continue to grow from the centre. They are some of our favourite winter veg, as they keep going through rain, frost and snow, even if they look a bit droopy the morning after... We'll prepare the beds for the edible garden in Parc yr Orsedd over the winter, so the soil is ready to feed the new plantings in the Spring. We're also working on finding partners to help care for the beds, and are talking to a few people about this already. If you’re interested, contact us on ediblellambed@ outlook.com or FB ediblelampeter Finally, we harvested over 5lb of green tomatoes from the Co-op beds + a shopping-bag full that a Co-op customer took away with her, and made green tomato ketchup! There will be a recipe for this on our Facebook page.

BANC HADAU LLAMBED IS SPREADING THE WORD! There was good cheer aplenty at the Banc Hadau Llambed/Lampeter Seed Library’s second birthday celebration on 9 November: not only is a second seed library starting up in Wales, at Llandrindod Wells, but we had an offer from one of our members to help make a video about setting up a seed library! We are getting more requests to visit people all over the UK to talk about how to do this, and although this is a very exciting development, the Banc Hadau core team have limited time to do it and we are also aware of the carbon footprint of all that travelling. It makes much more sense for us to make a short film that we will be able to share as an online resource on YouTube, and now that is going to be possible. We'll be working on it over the Winter. To find out more about the wonderful world of local seed-saving, come and see us at the People's Market every 2nd & 4th Saturday, or contact us on banchadaullambed@outlook.com Banc Hadau Llambed/ Lampeter Seed Library

Dywedodd Mr Randell, “Roedd ymweld â Cheredigion yn agoriad llygaid. Roedd yn dda siarad ag aelodau Undeb Cenedlaethol yr Amaethwyr ynghylch eu profiadau o gyrchu ac adneuo arian, tra bod y ford gron defnyddwyr yn amlygu'r effaith o gau canghennau banc ar ddefnyddwyr bregus. Mae'n bwnc pwysig inni a dyna pam yr ydym yn awyddus i barhau i gwrdd â phobl ledled y wlad i glywed eu profiadau drostynt eu hunain. Ers I ni gyfarfod, rwy'n falch bod cyllid a UK Finance a LINK wedi cyhoeddi mesurau pellach i helpu cymunedau i gadw neu adfer mynediad at arian parod.”

‘Eye opening’ visit as FCA Chairman meets community members to discuss accessing cash and banks in rural communities The Chair of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Payment Systems Regulator, Charles Randell CBE recently met with members of the community and key organisations to discuss access to cash, bank branch closures and the impacts on people’s ability to save and access credit. Mr Randell said, “Visiting Ceredigion was eye opening. It was good to speak with members of the National Farmers’ Union regarding their experiences on accessing and depositing cash, while the consumer roundtable brought home the impact of bank branch closures on vulnerable consumers. It is an important topic for us and is why we are keen to continue meeting people around the country to hear their experiences first hand. Since we met, I’m pleased that UK Finance and LINK have announced further measures to help communities keep or restore access to cash.” 8

Gŵyl Lyfrau Aberaeron Book Festival The second Gŵyl Lyfrau Aberaeron Book Festival was held over the first three days of November featuring leading lights of west Wales literature in Welsh and English for adults and children.

CABINET SECRETS AND GERMAN JAZZ HALLS TO STEAMPUNK & CORNER SHOPS Stories and reminiscences from the past to the future filled Aberaeron’s Memorial Hall as the second Gŵyl Lyfrau Aberaeron Book Festival brought over 25 authors, poets and performers to the town this month. Opened by Aberaeron’s Mayor, we were suddenly in the jazz halls of Stuttgart as Rhiannon Ifans delivered the headline talk on her National Eisteddfod Prose Medal winning novel Ingrid. Former cabinet minister Lord John Morris, in conversation with former S4C and BBC reporter Alun Lenny, revealed how he squeezed the first ever government grant towards the Eisteddfod from Prime Minister Harold Wilson, following a long walk around the falls at Devil’s Bridge. Quoting from his new memoir, Cardi Yn Y Cabinet, he asked for £75,000 but settled for £50,000 after Wilson warned: “Don’t pitch it too high, or the Treasury mandarins will kick it out.”

Festival organiser Karen Gemma Brewer with Cllr Katrina James Town Mayor of Aberaeron at the opening.

Ceredigion MP Ben Lake presented the inaugural ‘Llyfr y Flwyddyn Aberaeron Book of the Year’ to Megan Hayes for her capture of what he described as “an important and influential period of Ceredigion history” in Cows, Cobs and Corner Shops. This bilingual investigation of the dairymen and women from rural Wales who established London’s milk trade, beat Gail Honeyman’s UK best seller Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine into second place with another local book, Ifor Lloyd’s Derwen coming third.

on our doorstep that is making an important and increasing contribution to the literary world. The festival aims to celebrate and promote existing work and encourage the development of new writing.”

Audiences were strong for all the set-piece events, featuring writers working in both the Welsh and English languages. Especially the Welsh crime writer’s panel of Alun Davies, Geraint Evans and Meleri Wyn James and Sunday lunchtime’s interview of Ifan Morgan Jones, author of Babel the first Welsh language steampunk novel, by comic thriller writer Daniel Davies.

A series of adult workshops included Aberarth and Llanarth Bookclubs, Dr Jacqueline Jeynes on travel writing, Annette Ecuyere on dialogue in fiction and Kathy Miles on poetry. Kathy also headlined the Friday night poetry session at the Monachty Hotel with Chris Armstrong, Jackie Biggs and Karen Gemma Brewer.

Organisers Dr Niki Brewer and Karen Brewer of Gwisgo Bookworm, Aberaeron’s independent bookshop, explained: “The ethos of the festival is to promote current writing and writers of Ceredigion and west Wales, in every genre, with a strong bilingual focus. We have an unrivalled wealth of talent

The youngest authors present were pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron who read from their own community publication and there were also children’s workshops and presentations delivered by Huw Davies, Medi Jones-Jackson, Sharon Mari Jones and Colin R Parsons.

Henfynw’s E M J Foster previewed her forthcoming Brexit influenced novel Home?, L E Fitzpatrick launched the fourth novel in her Reacher sci-fi series The Rising Fire, and there were readings from Adam Somerset, Alys Einion, Derek Moore, Wil MacMillan-Jones and a special memorial reading of the late John M Hughes’ poem ‘At Ynys Las.’

Fel uchafwbwynt i’r thema ‘Ditectifs ar Daith’, cafodd y Cyfnod Sylfaen ‘Diwrnod Teithio i’r Gofod’. Gyda phasbort yr un, dyma’r plant yn cael cyfle i wneud amrywiaeth o weithgareddau megis, arbrofion, gwaith rhifedd sêr, addurno cacen, creu planed i hongian yn eu cartrefi a chyflawni ras rwystrau. Dyna beth oedd diwrnod a hanner!

The climax of the theme ‘Travelling Detectives’ in the Foundation Phase was a fun filled day of space travel. With passports in hand, the children enjoyed various activities such as scientific experiments, numeracy star work, decorating cakes, making planets to hang at home and completing a space obstacle course. They all had an amazing time. ‘Again this year the children went out to the community to hold Services of thanksgiving before joining together for an afternoon service at school with our friends from Hafan Deg. The Foundation Phase children held their own Service at St Cybi’s Church in Llangybi whilst Key Stage 2 went to Gartheli Church, Llwynygroes. £190 was collected towards St John’s Ambulance.

Eleni eto bu’r plant yn cynnal gwasanaethau o ddiolchgarwch yn eu cymunedau cyn dod at ei gilydd i gynnal gwasanaeth yn yr ysgol gan wahodd ein ffrindiau o Hafan Deg i ymuno â ni. Yn Eglwys Sant Cybi, Llangybi bu’r Cyfnod Sylfaen ac yn Eglwys Gartheli yn Llwynygroes bu Cyfnod Allweddol 2. Codwyd £190 tuag at Ambiwlans Sant Ioan yn y casgliad.

Years 3 and 4 held a photography exhibition to show their work on the theme ‘Click Click Y Dderi’. Parents and friends were welcomed to view the photographs.

Cynhaliwyd arddangosfa ffotograffiaeth gan flwyddyn 3 a 4, ffrwyth llafur eu thema ‘Clic Clic Y Dderi’. Croesawyd rhieni a ffrindiau’r ysgol i weld y lluniau.

Thank you to our energetic PTA members who held a Halloween party for the children. We saw some fantastic spooky costumes and carefully carved pumpkins and everyone enjoyed hot dogs and ice cream. Thank you to Howard Adair, one of our fathers for the disco and to Mrs Jen the cookery club for the lovely cakes.

Diolch i bwyllgor gweithgar Cymdeithas Rhieni a Ffrindiau yr ysgol am gynnal parti Calan Gaeaf i’r plant. Cafwyd gwisgoedd erchyll o wych a phwmpenni wedi eu cerfio’n gywrain, mwynhaodd bawb cŵn poeth a hufen iâ. Many of our school children laid poppies in their communities on Remembrance Sunday. The school fell silent at 11am to remember those who gave their lives for us. All classes took part in various activities.

Betsan’s Story Imagine being young, alone and struggling on the streets of a country with no welfare system. Imagine leaving the shores of the only place you know and travelling across oceans and continents, on the promise of a family who will love you forever. Imagine falling in love with that family, only for them to reject you after a few months. Meet Betsan. This is her story

Bestsan is a rescued street dog from Morocco. Betsan was befriended by Morocco Animal Adoptions as a pup living on the streets of Tamraght, a town in South West Morocco. Like so many stray dogs in the area, Betsan was struggling to survive. Morocco Animal Adoptions fell in love with her funny little character and took her in having faith that someone, somewhere would fall in love as we did. And so, a family came forward wanting to adopt Betsan. Betsan arrived in Llanddewi Brefi in June 2019, and two weeks later went to her family in Cornwall. Heartbreakingly, Betsan’s family no longer want her. Morocco Animal Adoptions is desperately looking for a foster home for Betsan or a forever family. Her current family are willing to keep her for a short time whilst we try to find a placement, but time is running out, and we just cannot entertain the thought of Betsan going into a shelter. You may be asking why you are reading about a dog rescued from Morocco, now living in Cornwall, here in the Grapevine. The answer to that would be… me, the founder of Morocco Animal Adoptions and originally from Llanddewi Brefi, a place I still call home, regardless that much of my time is spent on another continent. And who better to reach out to, than your own community? Betsan is a sweet, affectionate and social little girl, with a zest for life despite her struggles and upheavals. She is coming up to 2 years old in January (approximately). Betsan is microchipped, neutered and fully vaccinated. Bestan has lived with dogs, cats, children and a new born baby. Bestan will be the best thing that ever happened to someone out there. Is this you? Are you able to provide short/long term foster, or maybe you’re the forever family Betsan has been waiting for? Please get in touch if you think this may be you. Thank you. E-mail me directly at corrinacutler@live.com Corrina Cutler 13

Cellan WI The ladies of Cellan WI have enjoyed a variety of events during the second half of the year. In July they participated in the Llanfair and Cellan ‘Fun Day’ to raise money for the forthcoming Eisteddfod. Throwing pennies onto chocolate bars proved challenging! Other activities have included creating roses from icing, discovering the arcane art of cheese making and we are about to undertake a Quilling workshop. The annual award for the Monthly Craft Competition was won by Annie in a close fought race for the title. Julie and Sue have compiled an intriguing set of competitions for next year which will test all our crafting skills. The AGM took place in October with only minor changes in personnel. Annie stepped down as Minutes Secretary after 15 years of sterling service and Fiona passed on the mantle of Communications Secretary to Penny. As we look forward to the coming year Nicola has put together an exciting programme of activities some of which will be open to the wider community. The first of these events will be in January when we will be hearing local Postman Barry Davies recount his experiences of his epic 870- mile charity walk. Cellan residents will be thrilled to learn that we will, once again, be carol singing around the village in mid-December for a local charity. We meet at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month in Cellan Millennium Hall. Regular activities include a raffle and a there is a sales table of preowned books and DVDs. You do not have to be a member to join the fun, come along for a taster and meet our friendly company of ladies.

Unusual Kindness Every year, from 18-25 January, Christian Churches across the World celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Resources are developed by Christians in a different country each year. In 2020 it is the turn of churches in Malta, and the theme they have chosen is Unusual Kindness: it fits well with Grapevine’s theme of Good Cheer. Christians in Lampeter and area will be getting to celebrate on Wednesday 22 January 2020, at 2.00pm, in St Peter’s Church Hall, with a short bilingual service followed by plenty of time to share good cheer and good company over tea and cake! All welcome. Croeso i bawb! Deborah Rowlands

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group - Lampeter & District - ‘Good Cheer’ neurological diseases. Finally the carol ‘We wish you a merry Christmas…’ where we hear about figgy pudding and a ‘cup of good cheer’. In the early C17 yule logs, carolling, nativity scenes, and figgy pudding, were banned by the Puritanicals but re-introduced by the end of the century Figgy pud was an expensive pudding, full of different fruits and lots of ‘courageous spirit-giving alcohol’. It was a status symbol. The poor carol singers would demand it from the rich. Good tidings we bring for you and your kin, Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year. Oh bring us some figgy pudding (x3) and bring it right here. And we won’t go until we’ve got some (x3) So bring some out here. It’s a season for music (x3) and a time of Good Cheer.

My left leg is crawling and entwining around my right leg, seeking warmth. My right leg is burning and pricking and trying to wrap itself around my left leg in an attempt to cool down – I cannot sleep! My nose is frozen like a block of ice! Luckily my hands are warm, as is my body. How contrary is that? As I lie waiting for things to return to some sort of ‘MS normal’ my mind is a blank canvas to be filled with thoughts of ‘Good Cheer’. Split it up…I am thinking, GOOD and CHEER. GOOD is great. Happiness, warmth, joy, friendship, kindness… CHEER. Cheerful, to cheer, three cheers, cheer up, cheers… The MS Nurse had talked with me about ‘distraction techniques’. Try to think of other things. I’m awake now full of thoughts about ‘Good Cheer’ and feeling warmer. At our support group on Monday we had a bubbly, Good Cheer afternoon. I had got the day wrong (!) but we were able to use the Cwtch. Two new people came, which was great, and we were joined by Brian Watson who is our new Local Network Development Officer (something like that); even he wasn’t sure. Thank you for coming Brian. We discussed cups being half full or half empty. Good to be positive. We talked about the game of Bocce, like bowls and Boule but it is totally inclusive for people with physical problems or disabilities. Brian is talking with the leisure centre and the Disability Officer for Ceredigion. It would be good to get-together with people with other

It's getting harder to find good cheer these days, don't you think? The TV and the newspapers are full of chaos, crisis and controversy; people you meet often have some problem or other to tell you about; and I don't really count the snippet of light-hearted nonsense that they often tag onto the end of the TV news (which used to be called the ‘singing dog’). But there are some glad tidings to be found. I was looking into some of the Buddhist teachings, and there they point out something that got me thinking. They say that every moment in our lives, we are faced with a choice: either, do what you usually do, what you know and are comfortable with, or else try to do something new and different, better than before, be the bigger person or take hold of the bigger picture. Every moment? – talk about opportunity! Imagine how much better the world could be if we all stopped to check ourselves just once a day, and really thought about what we're doing... and then imagine if we made a conscious choice like that three times a day – and then even more. No more short-sighted decisions, no more personal bias in positions of power, no more selfishness? Well, the good news is, they're telling us that the opportunity is there, that every moment we do have a choice, and so, if that's what we want, we can have it – we just have to make sure we actually do make the choice: not the old habit but the new try. For me, that's wonderful news – and it’s good cheer and glad tidings for the season to you all. Frank Pitcher

The physical and psychological stresses of everyday life have influenced the popularity of Nature Writing proving the healing power of the natural world. The next few weeks are going to prove stressful for many people but don’t panic: throughout Ceredigion there are many places where the stressed-out can go for nature therapy. Aberystwyth is well known for its murmuration of starlings where the birds put on a spectacular display from late afternoon till dusk. The reason for these displays is unknown but could be a way for the birds to cheer themselves up after a hard day’s foraging. The display also attracts two ace predators: the Peregrine falcon and the Merlin and the presence of either of these birds will add an extra and thrilling dimension as they appear to choreograph their potential prey. Just as spectacular is the twinkling flight of a flock of a few hundred golden plover on a sunny day on the seafront in Aberaeron. This uplifting experience comes with a bonus: an ice cream or cake tea! Visits to Long Wood or the community woodland at Pontrhydyfendigaid provide the opportunity to see a number of different fungi species and, in the community woodland, the recently reintroduced Pine marten. Cors Caron can also look quite spectacular on a winter’s afternoon when the setting sun turns the bog red as it lights up the grasses. Wild swans and hen harriers spend the winter here and can brighten up a dull day. So no matter how fed up you are a walk in the country or by the sea can be restorative for both body and soul. *Plog is a word I’ve invented - it’s like a blog, but it’s not online it’s on paper!

Yr Efail - Good Cheer Regardless of the election result there will be plenty to keep us full of good cheer through Dec and Jan – just take time to observe, smile and be grateful. I worry about the imposition on our lives of electronic gadgets. Maybe a New Year’s Resolution to take control of these whizzy creations – switch them off or at least put them on silent – so that you can have time to yourself. Enjoy some personal space – don’t be driven/bullied by the pressures of ‘social media’ in particular – have designated time out. So, here I am tucked up in a sleeping bag with my woolly hat on. A hot drink of Yr Efail blackcurrant and apple cordial to keep me fortified. I hope that being frugal with the heating will keep winter bugs at bay. Whilst out and about there’s plenty

to cheer – the vibrant colour of rose hips still hanging on whilst a sharpeyed robin feeds on the seeds from burst hips on the ground below. Frosty mornings are welcome now as tender plants have been rescued and are indoors or wrapped/mulched, bulbs and corms have been lifted, cleaned or dried and stored in a dry, dark space until spring. The garden is mostly resting and we celebrate mulched borders, a seed order and delivery alongside our own YESS (Yr Efail Saved Seeds) that can now be collected from the saved heads that have been drying in the shed – they are to be labelled in paper packets ready for sowing in 2020. Borlotti Beans that have dried are waiting to be podded and stored and then eaten through the winter. Good cheer indeed at this time of 15

hearty soups and tagines and stored apples await being pureed or included in chutneys. Smugly we think of sweet peas and broad beans that are already sown and next season’s garlic bravely poking through the soil. Hebes that are quietly growing ready to burst into spring bloom and even some stoic bulbs are breaking the ground. There are buds already on the lilac tree and catkins heralding in the New Year. A cheeky robin accompanies us on outdoor tasks, flocks of fieldfares fill the skies and even squabbling starlings entertain. It will soon be time to turn to the making of seasonal crackers maybe accompanied by a sloe gin (or two). Good Cheer indeed.

Loneliness at Christmastime: Five ways to Cope. The festive season is generally thought of as a special time for family and friends gathering together. It can seem like everyone is busy, excited and happy, but for many it’s a time of isolation and loneliness. Some find they don’t have anyone to see and they have nowhere to go, and so, for far too many, Christmas is a time spent alone. If you find yourself dreading loneliness and isolation this Christmas here are my top five ways to cope. 1. Accept whatever you are feeling. Be with your feelings whatever they are, because it really is okay to feel whatever you are feeling. Every felt emotion is natural and normal and provides us with information, so it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you or that there is something that needs to be fixed. Feeling sad and low can be a normal response to isolation and loneliness, and therefore that is what you are supposed to feel! Allow feelings to come and go. Emotions are not permanent. All feelings however painful come and go, like waves on the ocean emotions have a natural rhythm, and so try to allow your feelings to come in, and then allow them to move away, naturally. If you feel like crying allow yourself to cry as this is a very normal and natural way to release emotions. Make your own list of positive affirmations. Write down some affirmations that feel true to you such as, I am safe, I am lovable, I am a caring person, I am a good person, I can love myself. When you feel down read them aloud to yourself. Ask yourself if you were directly speaking to someone who was feeling lonely right now what would you say to them. Write it down and when you next feel lonely read it aloud to yourself. Plan you day. Structure your day by making a plan to do things you enjoy so that you can create a Christmas day that works best for you. Reach out. Reaching out and talking to someone can help. This could be someone you already know, a family member, a

friend, a neighbour or a counsellor or therapist. It is important that you reach out to someone you think is a caring type of person who you can trust. The Samaritans are always there 24 hours a day, and you don’t have to be suicidal to call them for support. As a counsellor, I offer a relationship where you are invited to communicate your real self, just as you are, safe from having to pretend or put on a mask, and where you are not expected to be, think or feel a certain way. A place where you can experience acceptance. I am interested in who you are, what you need, what you love, what makes you laugh, what makes you sad, what makes you angry, what makes you feel dead inside, what brings you alive, what brings you joy and what you love most. Most of all I am always interested in how are things for you right now, how do you feel and what is on your mind in this moment, and lets begin there.

I am offering home visits over the Christmas period including Christmas day. So if you find yourself lonely this Christmastime I am available to come and be with you. We can be together without effort, with simplicity and ordinariness, two people sitting in a room, being real, open and honest - finding warmth and connection by just being ourselves. If you would like to book a Christmas visit from Cathrin please get in touch cathrin@cathrinwildwood.co.uk, 07870 888141 Cathrin Wildwood

The perfect project for keeping away the winter blues at Cae Hir Gardens! Need inspiration for a project over the cold Winter months? Want to keep up the good cheer and keep away the winter blues? Then why not get to work on a quilt for next year’s ‘Quilts in Cae Hir’ and imagine it hanging out in the sparkling sun on the August Bank Holiday weekend?! The exhibition has 2 categories – the open and the themed. The open speaks for itself, whereas the themed has a size restriction of 2’ x 2’ and next year’s theme is ‘Eisteddfod’, in honour of the Welsh National Eisteddfod coming to Ceredigion in 2020. So get your thinking cap on, let the ideas flow, harness your inspiration and dig out those scrap fabrics!! Ysgubwyr trydanol sy’n well i’r amgylchedd yn cymryd lle hen rai disel Mae Cyngor Sir Ceredigion wedi prynu dau ysgubwr newydd sy’n rhedeg ar drydan i gymryd lle hen rai disel. Mae'r ysgubwyr trydan newydd yn cymryd lle rhai disel sydd wedi cael eu defnyddio am sawl blwyddyn ac sydd wedi dod i ddiwedd eu hoes defnyddio. Bydd yr ysgubwyr newydd yn cael eu defnyddio yn bennaf yng nghanol trefi Ceredigion i helpu i gadw'r strydoedd yn lân. Gan eu bod yn rhai trydan maent hefyd yn well i'r amgylchedd ehangach ac yn rhatach i’w rhedeg. Y Cynghorydd Dafydd Edwards yw’r aelod Cabinet sydd â chyfrifoldeb dros Briffyrdd a Gwasanaethau Amgylcheddol ynghyd â Thai. Dywedodd, “Bydd yr ysgubwyr newydd hyn o fudd mawr wrth gefnogi ymdrechion ein Tîm Glanhau Strydoedd i gadw trefi Ceredigion yn lân. Fel rhan o Garu Ceredigion gall pawb chwarae eu rhan yn hyn trwy ddelio â'u gwastraff gan gynnwys sbwriel, pennau sigaréts a gwastraff cŵn yn gyfrifol ac yn gyfreithiol. Byddai hyn yn help enfawr i gadw Ceredigion yn lân a sicrhau ei fod yn parhau i fod yn lle gwych i ymweld â, byw a gweithio yn ogystal â chynnal y proffil cadarnhaol y mae'n ei haeddu.”

Environmentally friendly electric sweepers replace old diesel models Ceredigion County Council has replaced old diesel street sweepers with new electric powered models. The new electric sweepers replace diesel ones which have been in use for many years and had come to the end of their useful life. The new sweepers will mainly be used in Ceredigion’s town centres to help keep the streets clean. The electric sweepers will be better for the environment and will be cheaper to operate. Councillor Dafydd Edwards, is the Cabinet Member responsible for Highways and Environmental Services together with Housing. He said: “These new sweepers will be of great benefit in supporting the efforts of our Street Cleaning Team to keep Ceredigion’s towns clean. As part of Caru Ceredigion everyone can play their part in this by dealing with their waste including litter, cigarette ends and dog waste responsibly and legally. This would be a huge help in keeping Ceredigion clean and ensuring it remains a great place to visit, live and work as well as maintaining the positive profile it deserves.”

Ysgol Bro Pedr raise funds for life saving machine

Guto Crompton, Gweithiwr Ieuenctid yn yr Ysgol; Disgybl Narissa Jones, Mr Dafydd Charles, Pennaeth Dros Dro; Disgybl Cloey Farquar, Disgybl Kyle Hughes a Mrs Caryl Jones, sef Cydlynydd y BTEC, gyda’r diffibriliwr oddi wrth Proactive First Aid.

Pupils at Ysgol Bro Pedr have raised enough money to buy a defibrillator machine for the school. The idea came after 15 Year 11 pupils achieved their Level 3 Emergency First Aid Qualification with Ceredigion Youth Service. Pupils felt that it was incredibly important that they and others at the school had the skills, knowledge and equipment to use in an emergency. Mrs Caryl Jones and pupils raised an outstanding £1,150 through organising a bake sale at the school on 28 March 2019. The school extends their thanks to Lampeter businesses ‘Oh My Cod’ and ‘Y Becws’ for their kind contribution towards the sale. Guto Crompton, School Based Youth Worker said: “Although first aid is not a mandatory part of the school curriculum in Wales, young people at Ysgol Bro Pedr felt that it should be something that all pupils knew about. This would help them to know what to do in an emergency, whether that be in the school or out in the community. Pupils worked hard to achieve their First Aid qualification which covered aspect such as CPR, casualty management and the use of a defibrillator.”

Guto Crompton, School Based Youth Worker; Pupil Narissa Jones; Mr Dafydd Charles, Acting Head Teacher; Pupil Cloey Farquar, Pupil Kyle Hughes, Mrs Caryl Jones, BTEC Coordinator, with the defibrillator presented on behalf of Proactive First Aid.

Ysgol Bro Pedr yn codi arian i brynnu offer achub bywyd

The defibrillator machine will be placed in the school reception.

Mae disgyblion Ysgol Bro Pedr wedi llwyddo i godi digon o arian i brynu peiriant diffibriliwr ar gyfer yr ysgol.

CARFERI DYDD SUL SUNDAY CARVERY

Daeth y syniad ar ôl i 15 o ddisgyblion o flwyddyn 11 gyflawni eu Cymhwyster Cymorth Cyntaf Brys Lefel 3 gyda Gwasanaeth Ieuenctid Ceredigion. Roedd y disgyblion yn teimlo bod hi’n hynod o bwysig bod ganddyn nhw ac eraill yn yr ysgol y sgiliau, y wybodaeth a'r offer i'w defnyddio mewn argyfwng. Cododd Mrs Caryl Jones a disgyblion Ysgol Bro Pedr swm anhygoel o £1,150 trwy drefnu sêl gacennau yn yr ysgol ar 28 Mawrth 2019. Mae’r ysgol yn estyn eu diolch i fusnesau Llambed ‘Oh My Cod’ ac ‘Y Becws’ am y eu rhodd garedig tuag at y gwerthiant.

(£5.95 plant neu myfyrwyr/children or students)

Dywedodd Guto Crompton, Gweithiwr Ieuenctid yn yr Ysgol: “Er nad yw cymorth cyntaf yn rhan orfodol o’r cwricwlwm addysg yng Nghymru, roedd pobl ifanc yn Ysgol Bro Pedr yn teimlo y dylai fod yn rhywbeth yr oedd pob disgybl yn gwybod amdano. Byddent wedyn yn gwybod beth i'w wneud mewn argyfwng, boed hynny yn yr ysgol neu allan yn y gymuned. Gweithiodd y disgyblion yn galed i gyflawni eu cymhwyster Cymorth Cyntaf a oedd yn ymdrin ag agweddau megis CPR, rheoli damweiniau a defnyddio diffibriliwr.”

12.00pm - 2.00pm

£9.00 un cwrs/one course

Bydd y peiriant diffibriliwr yn cael ei osod yn nerbynfa’r ysgol.

Kinda Village’s Vision for the Future from the Heart of the Teifi Valley A Growing Community with Social Impact and Permaculture at its Core KindaVillage, situated on 80 acres of land in the idyllic Teifi Valley in Pencader, is part of a growing national network which also includes the Missing Kind charity and KindaCafÊ in Norwich. Our vision is for a kind, sustainable world built on sensitivity, sharing and sufficiency. Our mission is to establish a global network of communities, venues and projects supporting those with a passion for social justice. For us to realise our potential, we must first forge links with other organisations whose vision matches our own. Few pioneers thrive in solitude, and nothing is more stimulating than the conflict of minds with similar ideals, which is why KindaVillage needs like-minded individuals to help us build and sustain a community right here in the Teifi Valley. Determined as we are to make a social impact, all help will be reciprocated, with opportunities for success, both spiritually and professionally, becoming available to all involved. We have the land, space and facilities to accommodate volunteers and paid residents who are ready and willing to bring with them their enthusiasm, positivity and dedication. Expertise in permaculture, with its origins in agriculture, ecological human habitats, and food systems, can allow us to move forward until we have fulfilled our mission to establish ourselves as completely self-sustainable. Along the way we can teach others the skills we have learned in a mutually beneficial way, resulting in a working system built from ideas and applied to the physical world. Envision a place where workshops, retreats and events are available to both the young and the elderly, without any distinction being made between the two. A place where ideas and ethics are shared and nurtured, where equality, kindness and respect for nature and one another are tantamount to us achieving a more sustainable Earth for us all to live on. Our focus is on accomplishing a wide range of projects, each one with a positive social impact at its core. Working side-by-side with the local community in and around Lampeter and Carmarthen, we can begin to spread our shared vision further afield until a national and global network is established. Community

by J. Sandover Good cheer glows Warm in the cheeks of the people Dancing light in their eyes Their smiles ripple revealing A dazzle of laughter Good cheer is shared all around

This is family or Friends that feel like family or Acquaintance with good hearts Willing to take a sip and Pass the loving cup The different threads spin Their stories entwine They weave a coat of many colours For each to wear warm As they venture out again Back along their different paths Into the chill night air

Grave Diggers

by Derek Moore Searching in cellars Might reveal darkest secrets Nothing stays hidden Unearthing the past Won’t bring history to life If nothing is found Handy birthday gift For old Archaeologist Oxidized trowel Don’t bury your head Digging up old artefacts No future in it

Kiss Sea Kiss See

Sunset

by Karen Gemma Brewer There was a river running through here but now the bed is dry. We wasted all the planet’s tears there are no more left to cry.

by Kiara Down in the meadow we stood and gazed The sky in pale rose and violet grey And there was nothing to say Earth and heaven hovering Uncommitted to solidity Like a fluttering of birds And in the west Rippling fire

There was a forest standing on that hill where birdsong echoed far. We cut it down for direct mail recovery for your car.

by Amanda Pickering The smudge of a bird etched on a skyline at dawn his song spiralling through silence. In bright daylight, he is the shadow bird perched at the frayed edges of meadows swallowed by the gloom of hedges the negative spaces between. The double-glazed houses bar his music, lost to ears plugged by headphones fingers tuned to the vibrations of screens the ping of messages. Inside a chapel of alder, he pours his heart into the sooty dark the spark of his beak glowing, the last ember of a tiny bonfire

There was a schoolyard down the track where children staged a strike. We listened to their pleas then did nothing to put things right. Crystal clear waters evaporate in memory. No waterfalls nor kingfisher calls no kisses by the sea.

Blackbird

feathered in darkness, still singing.

In Another Country

by Polly Phemus Those lost women who have no home: No hearth at night, nor any fire To light their withered hearts, as they sit, And sway, and mourn from far away The homeland of their birth.

There's earth there now, above their men, No more to share the warm blue skies Life’s Date With Updated Death by Stan Scan That here are grey, with wisps of pain And loss; sad feathers, in cold winds Life, hiking home from a week on a beach, rucksack rubbing raw For those they'll never see again. on tanned shoulders, foresaw the dodgy traffic light at Purgatory Interchange and a rapidly approaching uninsured black Sleep now, Beamer, revved by the grinning, drunk-driving bones of a black- and let the rivers of their dreams hooded, gin-swilling, scythe-toting Grim Reaper. Sunlit run Dispersing this vision with a shake of the head, Life opted to duck instead through a hole in the hedge and dodge Death, drawing all the long straws with a short-cut across cornfields. Ambling through wheat unaware of what waited, misreading sounds of Death’s updated rattle, Life’s final battle. A valiant contester, but no way to outrun the Grim Combine Harvester. 29

through rippling waving ibis fields And young again, follow into birdwing trees That sing their long-forgotten golden songs Of spring and summer, before the war.

Wales Goes Starry-Eyed for New Astro-Tourism Trail Move over Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones, Wales has just landed its own star-hunting trail, and it's more star-studded than an A-list red carpet. The Cambrian Mountains destination of Wales has just opened a new astro-tourism trail recognising its recent accolade as one of the UK’s top spots to go star -gazing. Six stellar places have been awarded Dark Sky Discovery Site status, putting them right up there on the celestial map. The trail, which covers a driving distance of just over 50 miles, can be visited over the course of a few nights for a glimpse of Orion, The Great Plough and the North Star. It is accompanied by an illuminating Cambrian Mountains & Elan Valley Dark Sky Guide which details what to look out for throughout the year with a pair of binoculars or telescope. “The Cambrian Mountains is one of best places in the world to view dark skies,” said Dafydd Wyn Morgan, Project Manager for the Dyfodol Cambrian Futures project, which is running the astro-trail. “The clear skies offer incredible views of the Milky Way, meteor showers and the International Space Station when it passes over.” “By day the astro-trail allow you to discover a community woodland brimming with wildlife, the UK’s tallest reservoir, a 12th century abbey and mining heritage stretching back to Roman times.” The public can find the new Dark Sky Discovery Site locations at Coed Y Bont; Pontrhydfendigaid and the Arch near Devil’s Bridge; Llyn Brianne car park, Rhandirmwyn and Llanllwni Mountain; Pont ar Elan at the Elan Valley and the aptly named Star Inn Pub in Dylife. The new sites have been added to the Cambrian Mountains’ three previous established night sky locations of the Dolgoch and Ty’n Cornel Hostels and at the National Trust’s Llanerchaeron property. “The fact we have many pubs and restaurants near the astro-trail should help soothe things. If it's a bit cloudy or cold, people can pop in for a meal while they wait for crystal clear dark skies,” Dafydd added. “Visitors can enjoy a day walking on the hills then wrap up warm for a night of star gazing in the Cambrian Mountains.” The Dyfodol Cambrian Futures Project has worked with Dark Sky Wales as well as local authorities and regional representatives such as Ceredigion, Powys and Carmarthenshire County Councils, with additional support from Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru. It's supported by the Welsh Government Rural Communities Rural Development Programme 20142020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government. Celtic Christianity L I V St Briach Reposed 6th Century. Remembered 17th December. Disciple of St Tudwal Ss Brothen and Gwendolen / Gwendoline Reposed 7th Century. Remembered 15th October. Enwogion Cymru: A saint, who was one of the sons of Helig ab Glanawg. He and his brothers Bodfan and Brothen embraced a religious life, when their territory was inundated by the sea. He founded the church of Llanvrothen in Merionethshire, and his festival is October 15th (Bonedd y Saint). Only the names and place names publicly honouring these Welsh saints remains of their history. Brothen is the patron of Llanbrothen in Merionethshire. Dolwyddelen and Llanwyddelan in Montgomeryshire suggest a Saint Gwendolen; this and similar names are diminutives of Gwen (meaning 'white'), equivalent to the French “Blanche”. Troparion Of Ss Brothen And Gwendolen As in your native Wales you won souls for Christ by your witness, O Righteous Brothen and Gwendolen, so now in heaven intercede for us that our souls may be saved. St Brynach / Byrnach / Bernach / Bernacus / Brenach Abbot. Reposed 6th century. Remembered 7th April. St Brynach founded several monastic oratories in South West Wales and a hermitage and a church at Carn-Engyle (Mountain of Angels), north of St Davids, overlooking the Nevern. The place received its name because Brynach was in constant communication with the angels. His church became the principal church of the district. Dedicated to St Hywel, brother of St Gwyndaf, Nevern was an important religious centre; early carved crosses dating back to the early fifth century and gravestones inscribed in both Latin and Ogham can still be seen. There is also a 10th or 11th Century cross, possibly the finest in Wales. The church is surrounded by ancient yews, one of which 'bleeds'. Enwogion Cymru: BRYNACH (WYDDEL) or the Irishman, was the spiritual instructor of Brychan, one of whose daughters, Corth, or Cymorth, he married, and had by her four children, Gerwyn, and his sisters Mwynen, Gwennan, and Gwenlliw. He is considered to be the founder of Llanvrynach, or Penllin, in Glamorgan; Llanboidy, Caermarthenshire; and Llanvernach, Dinas, and Nevern, in Pembrokeshire; to which, probably, two others may be added. Brynach Wyddel is also mentioned in a mystical triad preserved in the Myvyrian Archaiology, ii. 72. Troparion Of St Brynach O holy Brynach, thou didst leave thy native Ireland to seek God in Pembroke's solitude. As thou dost now stand before Christ our God, intercede with Him, we pray, that He may have mercy on us. Harry Harrison 31
