The Secret Travels of the Grapevine… Grapevine is now available around the world: issuu.com/ lampetergrapevine/stacks … but we are also really interested to know how far and wide the paper versions have travelled; what local villages and communities it has reached and what route it has taken - Or perhaps how many people have passed it on to someone else? Are you planning any travels over the coming months? If so please don’t forget to pack your copy of Grapevine - we’re always fascinated to find out where in the world it goes. Can your copy of Grapevine be the most environmentally friendly traveller? Or will yours be shared in a variety of unusual ways, be found in an quirky local location, be upcycled or recycled? Where will your copy of Grapevine end up? Why don’t you send us your photos: lampetergrapevine@gmail.com

and we’ll publish them in future issues. Eds.

Croeso / Welcome to this issue of the Grapevine So what does ‘neighbourliness’ actually mean? Dictionary definitions state “the quality of being friendly or helpful to your neighbours” or “friendly and helpful behaviour, especially between people who live near each other”. I guess then, that this can potentially stretch as far as the people in our local community - In which case, you only have to read through this issue of Grapevine to find lots of examples of neighbourliness - acts of kindness and instances of people being helpful and supportive to others. Take the Repair Café, page 7, encouraging, challenging and supporting us to be a bit more savvy and inventive with our equipment, clothing and routines - looking to repair, repurpose or recycle items rather than just adding to landfill; or maybe the ‘Make A Green Team’, page 10, actively organising and undertaking local litter-picking events to keep our town and surroundings clean and pleasant … Perhaps we should all take part in at least one of these; and then there’s the sharing of food which is literally growing around town, with the Bwyd Bendigedig/ Incredible Edible team (see pages 27 & 35) helping local people to plant, tend, harvest, eat and share locally grown food; or the Lampeter Food Project (see listings page 20) redistributing surplus food from local

Hello. After reading your recent article on the Extinction Rebellion movement (Grapevine May 2019) and their three demands I feel compelled to comment; 1. Government must tell the truth. The Government has stated its concerns over climate change. Remember the Stern report and all the various climate summits, Rio, Paris etc. 2. Government must act. Just consider the discontent if the

Government acted for example by curbing air travel, personal transport, excessive consumerism and demanded that food be sourced locally (say 90% from within the UK to be realistic). 3. Government must create Citizen's Assembly. We already have this it is called Parliament so lets not create another tier of bureaucrats who will require premises, salaries and expenses… we all know where that leads. 4

The aims of Extinction Rebellion could be achieved without Government assistance but by ourselves as consumers. Just stop buying plastic, polyester etc. and stop flying, It is worth noting that the internet has a vast carbon foootprint, larger than that of aviation. Setting up foil-lined crisp packet recycling points may appease your conscience but only perpetuates the problem. David Robinson

Sanctuary Everywhere Welcome Day Lampeter Quakers organised a Welcome Day for over sixty asylum seekers and refugees at Llangadog Community Centre on Sunday 16 June. With twenty-five volunteers too, we had 90 to cater for, but a delicious spread of vegetarian stews and salads, plus fruit and homemade cakes was all provided by our kind supporters. We would like to say a big thank you to all those whose donations made the event possible: Watson &

Pratt's, Cooperative stores in Lampeter, Llandeilo and Llandovery, and Lampeter Sainsbury's all donated food. Llandeilo Town Band kindly entertained us with a lively music concert. The cost of the coach and hall hire was covered by a grant from South Wales Area Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Lampeter Meeting is part of Sanctuary Everywhere, a Quaker project which is committed to building a culture of welcome, opposing racism and campaigning to change the asylum 5

process to be built on compassion and practical response, rather than starting from a position of disbelief. It was such a happy day of making friends and relaxing together. The visitors were so impressed by the beauty of the countryside, and enjoyed time on the common and by the stream. Above all I think they appreciated a warm Welsh welcome. We feel sure we will be doing further similar events in the future. Judy Cooper

Dear Editor, Having read your editorial letter to a certain degree, I will concur with your sentiments’ of a pollution free society and world, but I am afraid that, will never be achieved, not in your lifetime or mine! What I would suggest, is not for the Grapevine to keep praising it is self on achieving a Plastic free Lampeter whatever that may mean? However, to badger the Town Council and Ceredigion Council to clear the gutters, pavements and drains of dust, dirt and rubbish! Repair the pedestrian lights in College Street and reduce the speed limit within Lampeter to 20mph. These achievable acts alone would reduce the pollution within Lampeter by at least 60%, and be beneficial to health of all the residents and visitors that grace Lampeter! The Grapevine also talks about the reduction of insects, bees and butterfly’s this also can be resolve by filling the empty planters and boarders dotted around Lampeter, with flowers. This would not only attract insects, bees and butterfly’s, but also make the Town look more attractive for residents, and much needed visitors. Lampeter is on route to Aberaeron, which gets a large amount of promotion and attention from Ceredigion Council and yet visitors that pass through on route, see a town that is being, run down from neglect by both Councils and yet know body seems to care that can do something about it! Therefore my request to Grapevine is! Stop trying to change the world and concentrate on changing Lampeter back to as it used to be! Clean and tidy as it once was, even after a market day, make it a place that passing visitors on route to Aberaeron want to stop and explore; A place that is steeped in history. A place, where they will depart from, and tell their friends to come and visit! Not as it is at present, a place where is a danger to cross the road, or a place where we walk down the pavement and get eyes full of dust every time a car or one of the heavy lorries pass by. It is not the world that suffers but the residents and businesses of Lampeter. There is a saying! From small Acorns, grow the mighty Oak! Mr J.E. Oakley Thank you for your interesting thoughts and observations. It’s always good to get feedback. Grapevine can obviously only answer for itself and not for others, so your letter will be forwarded to the clerk of the Town Council on your behalf, but they will need contact details in order to respond directly. Grapevine exists to be the voice of local events, news and views as well as to support everything that is local, even when the issues may sometimes be much broader. Another saying springs to mind ... “Think Global, Act Local” and this is what the Grapevine attempts to promote. It is important to be aware of wider issues so that we can work together as a community to build resilience and develop a sustainable future for our town. We can all do our bit to help. There continues to be many local events, open to everyone, that focus on tidying, cleaning or brightening up the town; local litter-picks (see Make A Green Team, page 10), Incredible Edible planting veg to share whilst rejuvenating tired flower beds (see Bwyd Bendigedig page 27 & 35), and opportunities to get involved in the future developments for Lampeter (see Town Council invitation to public consultation event, page 4). So, perhaps there is room in Grapevine for information and discussion on a wide variety of topics? Together we really can make a difference. Eds.

Dear Grapevine, I was interested to read the letter from the B&B owner (June 2019) regarding being "plastic free". Whilst it is to be applauded, for reasons of cost, convenience and hygiene it is just about impossible to achieve 100%, and it isn't always a good idea to force your own ideas and preferences on paying guests. As hosts who have been in the trade for over four years we have observed what guests like and don't like, and adjusted our offering to suit. We too offer fresh milk in a screw-top bottle in a mini fridge and coffee in jars but people are very funny about sharing containers, so we offer sugar in paper sachets and enveloped teabags. We don't put biscuits in a jar as guests have no way of knowing how fresh they are or whether anyone else has touched them, so they are individually wrapped for food hygiene reasons. We tried a glass bottle for water (and have one at breakfast) but mostly guests like to take it out with them rather than drink it in the room, so it doesn't work but we do ask them to bring the bottles back with them so that we can recycle them. In the bathroom we have dispensers for all of the toiletries but some older people still prefer an individual bar of soap which has to be wrapped in plastic rather than paper or it spoils when it gets wet in the shower. Similarly shower caps are packaged for hygiene reasons. We don't use the wrapped bathroom beakers that are available but have washable hard plastic tumblers. At breakfast, again we have trialled cereal in containers rather than individual packs but they were not popular for the same reasons as the biscuits. Kilner jars for jam and marmalade didn't work and the tiny jars are now a ridiculous price but to avoid the plastic portions, preserves in individual dishes work as does butter in individual lidded pots. Honey and Marmite are in squeezy bottles so that nobody dips a buttery knife into them. Because of where we are and how we shop we have to buy things like bacon, sausages, kippers, bread and some produce in single use plastic as we have no choice, so it needs the supermarkets to change their ways before we can completely. Trying to do it from our side of the fence is virtually impossible, a bit like shovelling snow in a blizzard. Janet & Tom McPherson Teifi Riverbank B&B , Lampeter

MAKE DO AND MEND 7 Community is the strength that will help us through all sorts of adversity, and neighbourliness, helping one-another, is the glue that holds us together. We like glue in the Repair Cafe :O) We’re picking up steam with several bikes, wheel barrows and tools sharpened recently thanks to Steve, George and Terry, (bike repairs in the foyer are now a regular feature at the first People’s Market of the month). Steve has been cleverly patching wheelbarrows like clothes using rivets instead of a needle and thread... The fashion industry contributes shockingly to our carbon footprints, the dyes used are frequently toxic produced abroad where the consequences are easier to ignore, and working conditions so often appalling. Plastic clothes fibres end up in the water system, cotton is grown intensively, then you have transport costs, and ultimately disposal. Where once we invested in just a few well chosen items, cheap disposable clothing has become the norm and our cupboards burst with rarely and never worn clothes. Charity shops are the savvy way to shop for most things, and with a duty to dispose of things responsibly, by donating we can allow many items, not just clothes to continue serving their purpose reducing our waste.

Our Public Inconvenience Announcement is “Wear it well” New at The People’s Market; ditching the disposable and unplugging, The Inconvenience Stall has ideas to share on making changes to everyday living, many of which can be handmade at home. A refreshing antidote to the advertising industry's pressure to keep spending hard earned money on ever more things that are deemed ‘vital’ to modern day living. Find The Inconvenience Stall, get some inspiration or just bring your repairs in to breathe new life into clothing and toys, I shall be bringing my sewing machine to The Repair Cafe regularly on the second People’s Market of the month (that’s on the fourth Saturday of the month). Look out for foil lined crisp packet recycling points within the University near reception, and in Victoria Hall, and keep an eye out on Facebook Plastic Free Lampeter for litter picks in your area, I’ve been waving at you... maybe join in instead of driving by! Still looking for fixperts with any sort of expertise to lend a hand and to host your hints and tips, please e-mail in or come and see us at the Repair Café with your ideas, and maybe some repurposing challenges? My apple trees will never get across And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him. He only says, “Good fences make good neighbours.”’ The poem continues but my time and words are up. It is a good poem. Try and read it sometime.

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group Lampeter & District - ‘Neighbourliness’ Sitting comfortably? I do hope so as I am going to tell you a story... At some uncertain date probably around five-hundred years ago an unmarried girl left forty shillings to a Kidderminster street, Church Street, so that ‘a farthing loaf’ was given, on Midsummer’s Eve, to every child that was born or living in the street on that day. She also wanted the trustee to bring into his house ‘..all the men of the street, so that they might meet in friendship, and settle any differences that might have arisen between them in the year just passed’. Although the money was lost for a while, in 1776 another man, John Brecknell, himself a resident, was joined by kindly locals to reinstate the custom with £150 to pay for a two-penny plum cake to be given, in addition to the farthing loaves, to every child or unmarried women in the street and for pipes, tobacco, and ale for the men who attend the Midsummer meeting. Any money over was to be given to the poor. This still happens every year and is known as the Peace and Good Neighbourhood Dinner. (A Dictionary of British Folk Customs by Christina Hole, 1976). We have just had both an MS meeting in The Mustard Seed Café, Lampeter, and a meal at Cardigan Golf Course. A good chance to meet up with others that we don’t see very often and to welcome new people. We talked about neighbourliness; to show concern, self-respect, respect for others, helpfulness, kindness, reliability, understanding, sharing, to be warm and cordial. A wave or smile can mean so much. Respect for difference. As a disability group this is so important. Respect can take many forms whether it’s letting a wheelchair through, or a building with suitable loos. Over lunch we shared photos of Marks and Spencer’s loos in Aberystwyth! So large a wheelchair can easily turn around! We talked about neighbours sharing payment for emptying a shared septic tank. Neighbours in communities can often know people’s first names or nicknames but not always surnames. The Birds and The Bees are my neighbourly neighbours…Bee Haven. Robert Frost, born 1884, an American poet wrote a poem called Mending Wall. He writes about the gaps in the wall and points out to his neighbour that gaps are important when there are cows. ‘No one has seen them [the gaps] made, or heard them made, But at spring mending-time we find them there. He is all pine and I am apple orchard

Our Support Group meets on the first Monday of the month from 1.30-3.30, in the back room of The Mustard Seed, Lampeter. We welcome anybody with MS, carers, and anybody wanting to know more, from wherever you are. You are also welcome at our Aberystwyth group which meets in the new Tesco’s community/charity room 12-2pm on the 1st FRIDAY of the month. INDIAN MUSIC CONCERT & WORKSHOP September Music is such a natural expression of human nature: any human that can hear can sing, and if we can move we can dance. I’ll never forget the joy of my four year old nephew, spontaneously dancing when he heard ‘The Messiah’: he’d not yet been told this wasn’t dance music! Same with singing, we stop if there is a disconnect between our head and our heart. Re-connecting with our natural body, breath and voice is the purpose of First Nature exercises. This was created by Corinne Shirman-Sarti. Corinne was a professional Classical Singer, and a voice coach, and she found the western way of teaching voice to be unnatural and potentially physically damaging to the body. So the First Nature way is the anti-dote, being a compassionate and holistic practice. Suekali will be sharing First Nature exercises at the Raga Workshop I am hosting in Lampeter on 7/8 September. She is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioner’s Network, and has been studying classical Indian music since 1988. Her teacher and partner Rajeswar Bhattacharya, is a Raga Master and, in West Bengal, famous and much loved for his rendition of the songs of Tagore. To get some idea of what this all means see the wonderful series Rhythms of India (BBC 4) on iPlayer, especially the first two episodes. I did go to Kolkata twelve years ago for a wonderful workshop, and when I was leaving the taxi driver asked me what I’d been doing, he then told me all about Rajeswar and we sang a Tagore children’s song all the way to the airport. Luckily it is not necessary to go to India to benefit from singing with Rajeswar because each year he comes to Europe and gives a series of classes, and this year I have persuaded him and Suekali to come to Lampeter to give us a Concert on 6 September Victoria Hall, 7.30pm (£8 advance £10 on the door)) and a Weekend Workshop (Early Bird £118 pay 50% deposit by 30 July; or £138). Whatever kind of singing you do (or don’t do!) this workshop will give you a wonderful experience, taking you to a beautiful heart-felt place deeper than anything else. To book the workshop contact Suekali14@gmail.com and/or see www.thesingingheart.com. Feel free to ask me, Dylis, about it on 01570 218201. Dylis Pugh

“If you eat, you’re in” Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed / Incredible Edible Lampeter spreads its seeds In many cultures, sharing food together is a sign of neighbourliness, community and friendship. Sharing food is sharing life. The motto of Incredible Edible, “If you eat, you’re in”, symbolises our commonality and the ethos of good neighbours who look after each other. Bwyd Bendigedig/Incredible Edible, which originated in Todmorden, Yorkshire, sprouted up in Lampeter in the spring of 2018 with the Lampeter Co-op kindly letting the newly formed group plant up one of their big beds with fruit and veg, free for anyone to harvest and eat. And, as some folks say, good ideas spread like weeds. The start of 2019 saw the group planting up the second Co-op bed with more fruit and veg. In the spring of 2019, the folk of Lampeter found a new IE garden at the Washtub, flagged by blue jean planters. This is being grown by the Custard Queens WI (see their report, page 35). This summer will see another IE garden growing outside Watson and Pratt’s and its surrounds in the industrial estate. Check out their planters made from re-cycled pallets. edible.llambed@outlook.com

And more good news in that Lampeter Town Council has given its permission for a small IE garden to be established in Parc yr Orsedd near the picnic tables. The BBL/IEL group thanks the council for its support. In the future, picnickers will have fresh produce on hand with “food miles” measured in feet! Plans are already afoot and a building and planting programme is being initiated. Keep your eyes open for periodic up-dates on the development of the Parc’s food garden as well as other BBL events around Lampeter. The Incredible Edible movement has not just spread to over 100 groups all over the UK from its origins in Todmorden, but also around the world. And it’s not because it’s about growing and sharing food to eat, but more importantly, it’s also about re-building something which many people feel we have lost. And that is real, resilient community and all that it brings. What it brings most of all is good neighbours and good neighbourhoods. The BBL/IEL team Facebook: ediblellambed

Heart-Centered Meditation Lampeter Centering Prayer Group By Krystyna Krajewska When I speak of darkness, I am referring to a lack of knowing. It is a lack of knowing that includes everything you do not know or else that you have forgotten, whatever is altogether dark for you because you do not see it with your spiritual eye. And for this reason is not called a cloud of the air, but rather a cloud of unknowing that is between you and God. Chapter 4, Cloud of Unknowing In the uncertain times of the late 14th Century, when the church dictated how people should think and worship, an anonymous English monk took pen to parchment and drafted a practical guidebook on the practice of meditation. The book was called The Cloud of Unknowing. Radically for its time, the book set out a simple heart-centered meditation method for achieving Divine union. The method teaches the use of a one syllable word such as God, or Love, to pierce through the dense ‘Cloud of Unknowing’ that is experienced when intellectual ideas of God are put to one side. The important part of the practice involves releasing all thoughts, desires and emotions, and allowing the heart to focus on God, leading – maybe – to the experience of Divine union. Fast forward 600 years to the 1970s. Thomas Keating of St Benedict’s Monastery, Snowmass Colorado, revived this practice to encourage its use beyond the monastery walls. Together with others from what became Contemplative Outreach, (including, in particular Cynthia Bourgeault), he developed it into what is now known as Centering Prayer. What is distinctive about this approach is that unlike other methods of meditation that require attention to be focused on an object, or a mantra, Centering Prayer allows the practitioner to gently release thoughts and feelings as they occur, and return to the heart center with the intention of welcoming the presence and action of the Divine. While recognising the Christian origins of the practice, the simplicity of the method is very accommodating of all belief systems. The Centering Prayer group in Lampeter was formed in July 2018, following a workshop on the practice by Jayne Macgregor and Val Harding from Contemplative outreach. Together with Marye Wyvill and Rajesh David, we had been reading Cynthia Bourgeault’s book, The Heart of Centering Prayer, and were very much taken by the deep wisdom and transformative effect of the meditation practice. Since then, the group of generally a dozen or more has met every week on a Wednesday evening at 6pm in the Old Building of the UWTSD Lampeter Campus. Our practice has gradually evolved. With some physical movements to settle into our bodies; a short reading to remind us of the practice of using a sacred word (can be something quite neutral like ‘peace’ or ‘now’) to release thoughts, or on some other aspect of the meditation method, and chanting to place us firmly in a sacred space, we begin 25 minutes of meditation. During a short break we may listen again to a reading from Thomas Keating or

Cynthia Bourgeault, as now we are now deeply receptive to the wisdom of these experienced practitioners. Some of us may do a walking meditation for a short while before we return to a final, closing meditation. Our group consists of people of all faiths and none. But we all join in the simple practice of creating inner and outer silence. Thomas Keating recommends two meditation sessions of 20 minutes per day: one for maintenance and one for transformation. Whatever the outcome, pausing to let go of the monkey mind, and creating silence in the midst of our busy lives harms no-one, and who knows, it may do a great deal of good. Our Centering Prayer group welcomes new members who are interested in exploring this method of meditation. Every 1st Wednesday of the month includes a recap and short discussion. For more information please email k.krajewska@uwtsd.ac.uk Krystyna Krajewska Jottings

Our closest visible neighbour for the best part of 30 years has been Ollie - a Tawney owl which has roosted in a stand of western hemlock. Not only were we able to watch him prepare to go off hunting but also to hear him when he returned just before day break. He with his mate almost certainly nested close by as when the young hatched and fledged they would perch on a fence post to watch the Pipistrelle bats as they emerged from our roof. Sadly, the number of bats has dropped from over 100 to just a few. Since last autumn when the bird became the subject of a national survey he has been noticeable by his absence until today, 3rd June, when he started calling again: ‘I’m back!’ When birds nest in close proximity to each other some exhibit very unneighbourly behaviour: rooks, herons and gannets will steal each other’s nesting material; the Eleanora’s falcon of the Mediterranean islands will snack on its neighbours’ chicks. Some of the birds that nest on the tundra will choose to do so close to birds of prey as security against larger predators. A number of people have told me of their disappointment when their swallows failed to return this spring though there is still time for them to arrive. Unfortunately, these birds, like many of our summer migrants, are decreasing in numbers, a sad absence of our temporary neighbours. David Price 28

Neighbourliness – Cymdogaeth yn Yr Efail Is it a characteristic of rural life everywhere, or are we just very lucky to find neighbourliness in abundance? Whether it’s for chicken sitting, help with a tractor when a delivery lorry is stuck in the field, or being available when a cut finger needs more than just a plaster, we have fabulous neighbours. The sharing of hedge-cutting, left over cake and picking a bunch of flowers just because – makes life roll along that much easier. Sharing plants with other gardener friends and helping with tasks that need more than one pair of hands are a pleasure. Our compost heaps are full of ‘neigh’bourly donations; the combination of donkey & horse poo, grass cuttings & vegetable waste creates black gold to enrich the soil. The honour of sharing special firsts – new potatoes, baby carrots or strawberries never fails to delight. In the borders good neighbours abound. Not just those that stand strong-stemmed (cleome) helping support others planted amongst them (cornflowers) that might otherwise be battered down by the rain but also real companion plants (French marigolds) that help to keep pests away. Planting onions or chives (with lovely purple globe flowers) might help to deter our voracious slugs. The delicate yet heady scent of a happily established clematis supported by a rambling honeysuckle LOOKING OUT FOR OUR PLANETARY NEIGHBOURS We share the planet with a host of other neighbour beings, and very recently Lampeter Extinction Rebellion (XR) became aware that a number of them were under threat from a proposed seismic survey for oil and gas in an area of the Irish Sea (St George's Channel) that would have severely affected the Cardigan Bay Marine Conservation Area. The survey was due to begin on Sat 1 June. After further research and contact with our local MPs and AMs, we planned an action in New Quay to raise local awareness of the threat: originally we had thought we would need to urge people to act and contact their representatives to protest.

that will bloom later in the season, is a favourite ‘neighbourly’ combination in my garden. Tall perennials that need tying up are held by lovely plant supports made by a neighbouring blacksmith and my neighbor from across the field wends her way weekly to assault the weeds in my borders. We keep a general lookout for each other too – I like to think that my innate nosey Welshness is not always a bad thing! Come along to share the Cymdogaeth yn Yr Efail this summer and contribute to the NGS charities. In the meantime, conservation charities and groups were highlighting the risks to marine wildlife, Ben Lake, Stephen Crabb and Elin Jones were asking questions of UK and Welsh Governments, and thousands had signed an online petition. In the event, ENI the company concerned, announced on 31 May that they intended to postpone the survey. Lampeter XR went ahead nonetheless, in order to alert people to the issues and the potential ongoing risk from the survey. Sixteen activists and a pod of cardboard dolphins engaged holiday makers and locals at New Quay in discussion: most had not known about the survey and were horrified. Then on 4 June, ENI wrote to Ben Lake to confirm they no longer planned to carry out any 31

surveys in St George's Channel or Cardigan Bay. Looking out for our neighbours can be a powerful act, and for some of us it also built a sense of neighbourliness with the people we spoke to on June 1st. Visitors to New Quay related their own experience of changes in the marine environment and what they were doing in their local area. Neighbours make a community, and communities can act together to positive effect. Julia Lim

Always a welcome at Llanfair Art Exhibition The village of Llanfair Clydogau has long been known for its warm welcome. Visitors are attracted from near and far to its many events, and one of these is the annual Llanfair Art Exhibition, held in the Village Hall, at the heart of the village, next to the church. The exhibition, which this year takes place between Thursday 25 – Sunday 28 July open daily 11am – 6pm features the work of eleven local artists, working in a wide range of disciplines. Four guest artists join the event this year: David and Lisa Hardy, moved to Llanfair Clydogau last year, following careers in fashion and graphic design in London and Hastings, and they bring something very different to the exhibition. Lisa is inspired by flora and has a unique emotive style of painting and drawing, whilst David, who has exhibited internationally, is inspired by the natural landscape and uses graphic representations. Christine Clarkson is a talented quilter using a range of techniques including embroidery, and she will be exhibiting a variety of textile pieces. Robert Blayney has a broad skill-set, working with pen and ink, watercolours, mixed media, oils and acrylics. He finds much of his inspiration from the beautiful Welsh landscape. Regular Llanfair artists, Ali Scott, Sue Powell, Dodie and Jamie Herschel, Aerwen Griffiths, Cynthia Westney and Claire Parsons will be showing a wide range of new pieces they have been working on in the last 12 months; these include wet-felted pieces, lino prints, collographs, oils, watercolours and ceramics. As usual, visitors will be sure to find delicious homemade cakes, teas and coffees to enjoy whilst they browse. If a glass of wine is more your style, then you may like to drop in to the special ‘Meet the Artists’ late opening on Friday 26 July, running from 6pm–8pm, where all the artists will be on hand to chat with any visitors who are interested to know more about their work. On Saturday 18 May, staff and workers from local charity Tir Coed completed a 21 mile litter picking challenge and walk from Lampeter to Aberaeron, raising awareness about Tir Coed’s 21 years of impact on local people and our local environment raising over £450 for the charity. The 10-strong Tir Coed team, armed with litter pickers and litter bags, lined up at the starting mark alongside Hydro Dragon Events’ 21-mile walk/jog/run challengers at Lampeter leisure centre. Their destination – Aberaeron harbour, 21 miles later – seemed a long way away; but this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm that was clear to see and hear. Ceredigion’s hills, forests, farms and public footpaths were a beautiful setting for the challenge. Throughout the day, the team kept up to date with the Tir Coed Just Giving fundraising page and as the donations continued to grow so did their drive to keep going! 8 hours and 57 minutes after leaving Lampeter, the team crossed the finish line together having picked up 12 full bags of litter and raised over £450 (and counting!). Tir Coed’s Communications Officer, Rhys Russell said:

“We all need to work together to limit the amount of rubbish strewn into our fields, towns, hedges and roadsides, and to pick up all that is already there, to keep our local wildlife safe, improve the local environment and benefit the future of the whole planet . . . Thank you to everyone who has donated to justgiving.com/campaign/tir-coed, or helped us celebrate our coming of age and shared our journey!”

Llewod Llambed / Lampeter Lionesses News The theme of this July’s Grapevine is “Neighbours” and any type of club fosters a sense of belonging in its members. Being a part of a team builds relationships that are forged on respect and trust, it encourages understanding and empathy, support in both victory and defeat, good times and bad. This in essence is what a community is, and what makes good neighbours. As the domestic netball season comes to a close, the UK’s home nations embark on international competitions. England, Northern Ireland and Scotland take part in the World Cup; the netball community descending on Liverpool from 12 July and the BBC are televising all matches from the 15 July. This will be a great opportunity to watch some of the best players and teams in the world coming together to showcase this exciting sport. The Welsh team also has a busy summer as they host a series of international tests in The Viola Arena in Cardiff. Llewod Llambed is arranging a trip to support the Welsh girls and we are looking forward to seeing a great game. Closer to home, the “Leagues 4 You” league has almost reached a conclusion. Only two more matches to go, with the Tregaron Turfs in an unassailable first place with Bont Blades and Llewod’s Llawen Llambed battling it out for second and third places and Llewod Cubs in fourth. Llewod Llawen’s next match (10 June) against Bont Blades being a pivotal result to decide the final placings. The league finishes with the two Llewod teams pitted against each other (17 June) and promises to be a fun packed finale!

It has been great to extend the netball season and to have had so many new players joining in to experience competitive team sport within a friendly and inclusive environment. We hope that they have enjoyed it and maybe even want to start a team or join a club. A huge thanks must also go to the local ladies; Lisa Jones, Tricia Chapman, Mali Davis, June Blake and Llewod's own, Carwen Richards who agreed to umpire and who have not only officiated in a generous spirit but in the case of Lisa Davis undertaken all of the on-site management of the event. Marvelous job ladies. We would also like to wish speedy recoveries to those lionesses that have sustained injuries this season. Beth Jones, Kirsty Wright, Alice George, and Alex Fox, heal well and we hope to see your return to the squad in September. Llewod Llambed will continue to train throughout June with reduced sessions during the rest of the summer. Please look on Llewod Llambed Facebook page for dates and times. All abilities and levels of experience are welcome. Look out for the Llewod’s float in Lampeter carnival parade and give us a wave! Lastly huge congratulations to the Lionesses Anna Shuttleworth and Elen Davis who both gave birth to beautiful boys; Otis and Ioan, in May, llongyfarchiadau. Lynn Humphreys

GRAND OPENING OF INCREDIBLE EDIBLE GARDEN On Friday 7 June Debbie Camp of Custard Queens WI cut the ribbon, with a pair of secateurs, to open the second Bwyd Bendigedig/Incredible Edible Garden in Lampeter. Despite the torrential rain there was an excellent turnout to toast the project with sparkling wine and Custard Cream biscuits. They were joined by Julia Lim, of Bwyd Bendigedig/Lampeter Incredible Edible. The garden is outside The Wash Tub on Station Terrace and has been planted by the Custard Queens, with the help and advice of Lampeter Incredible Edible team, with vegetables for

everyone to share. Custard Queens have bought a water butt and have been given a watering can so everyone can nurture the garden. The onions, spinach, chard, radishes, and beetroot are coming on well. The lettuce and mint are ready to pick and the strawberries and tomatoes are flowering. There are slate signs saying what is ready to pick and eat. Debbie thanked The Wash Tub for providing the site, Bwyd Bendigedig/ Incredible Edible for providing the inspiration, knowledge and support, D. L. Williams Home Centre for providing paint to re-do the railings and Robert’s

The Giant Vegetable Festival

by Amanda Pickering All over Britain grandads, dads, sons are perusing seed packets what to choose, cucumbers, runners, onions, pumpkins? There is luck in the seed the rest is love. Seeds in trays on windowsills, in airing cupboards, poly-tunnels snug under compost, milky seaweed feeds, rainwater from a barrel warmed to greenhouse ambience, sunlight. Potted in soil enriched with blood and bone, vermiculite to drain, seedlings swell, swollen, grown elongated and gargantuan, the secret know-how fruiting. The thrill of the festival, who will win this year’s parsnip class, beat the record of the forty-kilo swede, the three-foot runner bean. Imagine melons on the move in vans through leafy lanes, car boots gravid with cabbages swaying along motorways a bariatric beetroot replete on a back seat, the heft and careful manoeuvring of beloved vegetables. The giant fruit and veg tent is quiet as a museum, rows and rows of marrows, carrots, tomatoes laid out on trestle tables, classified, labelled the weighing and measuring serious as a dockyard.

Dai Evans still King of Cucumbers has grown a monster cabbage, who will break his record? ‘It is there to be broken,’ he says, with the grin of a man who has enjoyed years of fraternity.

The past is like a hidden walled city In my bones and blood Whose people are restless and keep running away Turning up with their sorrowful eyes uninvited in my living room Where the windows are open to the streaming light from the garden They leave dirty feet marks on the rug and sit heavily by the window What do you want? I ask them I have listened to your stories They are like shards of broken glass under my feet This morning they were here again Sitting on my favourite cushions by the window This time I said, I will tell you a story And I told them the story of how each one of them Were part of the song of my soul And they could never be wrong or worthless I thanked them all and went out into the garden When I came back the living room was empty of visitors Light from the window streamed in and bounced off the diamonds scattered on the cushions

Words from the Apple Tree by Nikola Bransden

When words from the Summerhouse are not for me, I sit up high in my apple tree. A platform I made, many moons ago, Where Max threw apples on them below Freja sat up here with her mates Chatting, laughing; lots to relate. But they’ve grown out of sitting up here, They’re on the computer or having a beer! So it’s me who’s enjoying the little tree deck. To write down some words and stop for a sec, and think of things, of this and that, ponder and wonder as I am sat. As the children get older, I plainly see, I must do something that’s really for me But a few years yet until they’re all grown, flown from their nest and off on their own. Until that day, dinners I’ll make, a mother I’ll be and picnics I’ll make. Enjoy the lovely life by the sea and cherish the moments sat up in my tree. 37
