Croeso / Welcome to this issue of the Grapevine So, can I concentrate my thoughts for just a minute to see how far I get with compiling this editorial? Well that remains to be seen! There is no way that you as the reader will know how long it has taken me to come up with this content … so maybe, this has been a speedy version. Then again, I’m not sure my poor typing skills are really up to the speed needed to get all of this down in just a minute! Oh well, it was a nice idea, but I often find that it can take several attempts to get everything to flow and make some kind of sense … and that certainly takes a lot longer than a minute! Perhaps I should focus more on what can be achieved in this relatively short time-frame instead… Let’s identify things that will be much easier to accomplish... Surely we can all do something constructive towards climate change? Afterall, it takes less than a minute to ... remember to pick up a reusable bag before going shopping, instead of buying a plastic one; choose to buy more food without packaging; show your support for a good cause; sign a petition lobbying the powers that be, to make positive change; put rubbish in a bin or a pocket rather than littering the beautiful countryside! Sorry this one is quite a raw subject, as I recently completed

the Hydro Dragon Events - Lampeter to Aberaeron 21 mile challenge, whilst doing a fundraising litter pick as part of Tir Coed’s ‘Coming of Age’ celebrations… and we collected 12 bags of litter on route! It’s amazing how thoughtless some people can be! So perhaps we should be saying … Just take a minute to stop and appreciate how very special the place we live in really is … Maybe then we will see how important it is to do something positive - right now! from reading Grapevine!

Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed / Incredible Edible Lampeter May has been a mixed month for Bwyd Bendigedig. On the up side, the marvellous Custard Queens planted up their Incredible space outside the Washtub, and we have planted up both beds outside the Co-op. The Brownies have been growing their seedling veg and edible flowers ready for planting Cllr. Elin Jones out, and Lucy of Watson & Pratts has approached us to set up some Incredible Edible space outside the shop, which is exciting. They have already created some beautiful wall planters at the shop from pallets, for customers to pick herbs from. **From what we know at the time of going to print, the bed in Parc yr Orsedd may yet become a reality this year, but whatever happens we plan to give the Brownies' carefully tended seedlings pride of place somewhere in town keep an eye out for them. There will be more definite news in the next Grapevine.** As with last year, if you have Just a Minute please join in with checking, watering the food in our Incredible spaces, and of course picking when it is ready later on. We hope to have many more interesting conversations with you over the green leaves! Anyone who can help us with taking photos of the plants as they grow, for our Facebook page, or with making bilingual signs for the beds would be welcomed: Please get in touch with us on edible.llambed@outlook.com or Facebook ediblellambed if you can help with this. Banc Bwyd Llanbed Lampeter Food Bank RYDYM YMA I HELPU - HERE TO HELP

Banc Bwyd Llanbed is in desperate need of temporary accommodation. Tai Ceredigion will start developing the Canolfan Dulais site this Autumn, and all tenants in the building will need temporary accommodation from then until early 2021 when the new, greatly improved building will be ready. Tai Ceredigion are working with Banc Bwyd to find suitable temporary accommodation, but have advised us to explore as many local possibilities as we can. Could you help us? Our main need is for space to store donated food and make up parcels for clients: we are also looking for a much smaller space to use during our opening hours to meet clients. The food storage will need to be in a large room that is dry, rodent-proof and secure with power for lighting, as well as accessible during office hours by our volunteers (we have our own shelving). Somewhere reasonably central in Lampeter would be ideal. We would need to fundraise for any rent unless it is nominal, but should be able to cover utilities costs. If you think you have somewhere that we could use for about 16 months from around September this year, please contact us on 07582 905734 or on our Facebook page lampeterfoodbank. Diolch / Thank you Banc Bwyd Llanbed/ Lampeter Food Bank

Dear sir/madam I have just read the article re: single use plastic (May 2019) and I thought it may be worth letting you know how we as a business promote not using plastic. We have a bed and breakfast in Llanybydder. We use glass milk bottles for the rooms, so they can be washed and reused. Plus the guests get fresh milk. So we do not use plastic single use milk containers. Also we do not have biscuits in individual wrappers. We provide a biscuit jar. We do not use any single use plastic for shampoos, shower gels etc. Our tea and coffee are in jars and there is fresh glass bottled water, no plastic! We feel strongly about this. I also find myself telling guests they wont find any plastic in their rooms and I feel proud when I do. And guests really appreciate our efforts. Just thought this may be something you could use as we are a supporting business doing our bit! Many thanks Gillian Swaine Gilly@Y Garreg Wen Well done Gillian, it sounds like you’ve really got the plastic-free issue sorted at your B&B. Let’s hope that your guests now follow your good example. MAKE DO AND MEND 6 The Repair Cafe is now ‘geared up’ to become a bike repair workshop, every first People’s Market of the month, and can be found in the foyer, thanks to George and Terry. I cannot deny my passion for fixing things, but Extinction Rebellion has certainly presented us with a challenge!! It’s not something anyone can fix on their own, so we need all of you to help; join us, learn more, we’re doing it for the kids... we are meeting up regularly after the People’s Market at Victoria Hall, Lampeter. There are things we can do; most require putting our money where our mouths are, literally, as food production, packaging and transport is so carbon costly at present, the good news is that regenerative farming produces healthier food and actually incorporates carbon back into the soil. ‘Shifting Baseline Syndrome’ comes about when generations of humans grow ever increasingly blind to ecological loss. New generations adopt the assumption that the lack of biodiversity is normal. Even the many glorious shades of green in our ‘Green and Pleasant Land’ come as a result of chemical intervention. The land has been restructured for profit leaving us with green deserts, monocultures lacking the diversity and resilience needed, leaving us and our food production vulnerable to climate change. To bring Food Security back to the area we have plans to start a community food growing project which we would love you to get involved with. Meanwhile, keep demanding local, regeneratively grown/organic food.

Extinction Rebellion members from across Mid Wales travelled to London to join the protest calling for urgent and wide ranging UK government action on the climate emergency. Local groups from Lampeter, Aberystwyth, Machynlleth and Llanidloes gathered with others from across Wales and the South West of England to occupy Oxford Circus. Extinction Rebellion takes inspiration from successful protest movements in history, including the Suffragettes and the Civil Rights movement. The group follows a strategy of civil disobedience whilst being committed to non violence and respect. Andy Warren, a company director from Llanidloes said,

Elmo’s Kitchen box scheme would be a great place to start. Find your local producers at the People’s Market. I’d say check your labels! But my Plastic Free Lampeter-ometer... Lampometer? tells me if you’re buying food in plastic you are probably shopping in the wrong place. Change to a renewable/green energy tariff. Use less, waste less, keep your money within the local economy. Coming to our ‘Public Inconvenience Announcement’ I spent much time apologising for the inconvenience caused to commuters by the Rebellion in London, whilst reminding people that this inconvenience was insignificant compared to what lies ahead if we do nothing. Unfortunately I do have an imagination, (sometimes wish I hadn’t), but consistent with the fact that we haven’t thus far been told the truth, people in general, have NO IDEA what awaits us. Our Public Inconvenience Announcement is

“Inconvenience? You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”

Cheryl Hillier singer/songwriter, health and climate campaigner and Biochar Lady.

"This movement will change the world. All our traditional campaigning methods, such as petitions and climate marches, have been ignored. Peaceful direct action is the only course left to us. I've been involved in direct actions before but this is the first time I've been arrested." Attending the protest with her 4-month old baby, writer Hannah Engelkamp of Aberystwyth said, “XR began last autumn and its whole message was a breath of fresh air. It is firmly grounded in non-violence, and there is such respect and understanding in the process behind the scenes - I’ve felt really proud to be part of it. The research suggests that we need 3.5% of the population to be involved with direct action in order to make real change, and this seems possible. At last I feel like there is hope. And that blossomed in London. I did an all-night shift in Oxford Circus with my 4-month-old baby Tali, and felt cared 7

for by everyone.” Extinction Rebellion has three demands: that the government and other institutions are honest with the public about the climate and ecological emergency we are experiencing; that the government act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025; and that the government create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens' Assembly on climate change, with members selected at random, as with jury service. Speaking in Oxford Circus, Angie Polkey, a permaculture and sustainability teacher from Swyddfynnon, said, "I've absolutely loved talking to onlookers and hearing their support for what we are doing here. People are waking up to the urgency of the situation, the need to save our planet, and they are thanking us for it." on behalf of Mid Wales Extinction Rebellion groups

Extinction Rebellion - what did the London demo mean for Lampeter? 8 people went from the Lampeter area and we also held an event in Aberaeron - here are some stories... The Outreacher - Angie Polkey, Permaculture & Conservation Facilitator "This has changed my life... if I die tomorrow, I'll die happy!" With tears in his eyes, an elderly man (from Soho, of all places!) told me of his despair - and now hope - for the world. This was typical of the conversations that I had during my four days at Oxford Circus. Office workers, a BBC musician, journalists, Underground staff, a restaurateur shoppers, and tourists - all agreed overwhelmingly once they understood the true nature of our climate crisis, that we have to make governments wake up and take action now. When I arrived in London, I wasn't sure what my role would be but it soon became clear that talking to onlookers on the edge of the crowd was both necessary and rewarding. I was open to being arrested - and spent a cosy, 'XR community' night under the pink boat, when that was a distinct possibility - but talking to others and encouraging them to join the movement was my forte. I loved the camaraderie, the caring, the humour and the regenerative culture which played out in front of my very eyes. Being checked on under the boat by 'wellbeing officers', having Danish pastries and chai delivered with a smile at 6am (just in time for breakfast TV filming!), being offered free wholesome food during the day, snoozing in the wellbeing tent while others were receiving a massage and seeing legal observers carefully minding the (peaceful) arrests - all have etched warm memories in my heart and soul. I'm humbled and privileged to have been part of it and my thanks to all at home and in London - who made it possible. The work continues.

ANOTHER WAY (on ReverbNation) by Cheryl Hillier,

The Mother - Rolanda Between 15-25 April, Extinction Rebellion has seemingly achieved its first demand: Tell the Truth. More people now know more truth about climate change than they did before, and once known, it can never be unknown. George Monbiot has called it “one of the great tipping points in world history.” Short of childcare, I decided at the last minute to take my children and make for London. And what an amazing experience it was. Perhaps my strongest impression was the tangible atmosphere of complete trust among strangers who had come together for a common cause. Ours was the first tent pitched at Marble Arch. When we left it to go to Oxford Circus I warned my daughters that they may never see tent nor sleeping bags again – this was central London after all. When we returned, there it stood, proud in a sea of 150-200 other tents, all squashed together in a triumphant huddle. Also apparent, and somewhat stunning, was the culture of deep, nourishing care – for the earth, for each other, and for life itself. There were tears, poems, joyous and sorrowful music and dancing, the mutual bond that arises from a common purpose. Moreover, when we woke up in the cold of early morning – there was hot porridge free and available to all and any, and further hot, delicious home-cooked meals throughout the day, donations welcomed but not expected. When the police closed in on Waterloo bridge and many were being arrested, my 12 and 15 year olds sang and cheered for each and every one of them, while my youngest ran off to the children’s corner to make a sign which read ... “Stop arresting people when they are trying to save your life!”

singer/songwriter, Biochar Lady, arrestee If there was another way, of saving the world today, I'd not hesitate to say, Some Lampeter barnacles beneath but it's going to get harder. the boat There is no other world, in place to be unfurled, so we've got to work harder. If we fly too near the sun, and what is done is done, there will be no more fun, and it will be dire. There was a reason why, Man wasn't meant to fly, but we keep going higher; So many more mouths to feed, so much more consuming greed, who knows if this will lead, to a funeral pyre: No more baby booms, we've got no more room, more fuel to the fire. So we better buck up soon, if we're going to escape our doom, or I'll sing this sorry tune, and I'll sing it louder. Please think what you have heard, this will take more than words, or it's going to get hotter. If there was another way, of holding the tide at bay, I'd not hesitate to say, but it's going to get harder. There is no other world. THERE IS NO OTHER WORLD. Clearance of the last barnacle at So we've got to work harder. Oxford Circus If there was another way. If there was another way If there was another way. lampeter@xrcymru.org https://rebellion.earth/ 8

The Arrestee - Cheryl I spent the night in a police cell, after two nights on the cold, hard tarmac in the middle of Oxford Circus. I had been locked onto a concrete tube with a fellow rebel. It took police an hour and a half to cut me out, before my arrest. I did it for my kids and for yours. We all have lives to lead, and I was lucky to have my husband Terry to take care of things at home, while I went to London to join the Rebellion. He watched the story unfolding with tears of relief that something was changing, proud of my arrest. For him, being part of the funeral procession in Aberaeron was an outlet for his ambition to do something. Extinction Rebellion represents the first real hope for change in our lifetimes. Getting involved is the most important thing we have ever done. The first demand; 'Tell the Truth' (and act like it is real) is pivotal. The movement has had mixed reviews, but every man, woman and child would have been right there with us if the truth were being told. When nothing is done, how are people to understand

the gravity of the situation? Grappling with the prospect of near-term Human Extinction, we left our whole lives behind to seek a sustainable lifestyle in Wales. We are so blessed to have found this community in Lampeter that is so supportive. Yet, I have to admit I didn't really have any hope at all for the future until Greta Thunberg came along, and then Extinction Rebellion. It doesn't matter how many times we see what needs to be done as obvious, a no-brainer; the response was always - 'good luck with that'. So many people before have tried and failed to get an appropriate response. Those that have been trying for longer - some of them thirty years and more, have watched the unprecedented weather events accelerating, and become hardened to the inevitability of runaway climate change, because the demon profit always, always wins, skewing facts - and common sense never seems to prevail. Nothing would ever be done. So can we now get Governments to acknowledge the harm being done to our land and to our farmers, the custodians of our countryside and

providers of the very food that brings us all nourishment and health? Can we get Governments to see agrochemicals as the existential threat that they really are? This is the last bastion: having declared a climate emergency, our Government is still defending agribusiness' right to trash our planet, its diversity, its wildlife, our water, even our means to produce food in the future, in the name of 'cheap' food production now, with no thought to our tomorrows. This is where the Welsh have a very special and crucial role. If we can support our farmers, and show the rest of the world how to provide food security with local, regeneratively grown sustainable food that restores to us health and vitality, repairs damaged soils, increases resilience to the worsening weather extremes, and turns agriculture from one of the biggest emitters to a net carbon sink - so healing ourselves and the planet at the same time - Welsh Farmers could be the shining light that brings hope to these dark days.

LAMPETER XR DEMO IN ABERAERON SAT 20 APRIL The coffin-makers - Kath, Julia, Cathy and Shelley Our small team triumphed over lurgies, sweltering hot weather and paint that almost didn't dry, to create the coffin that was the centrepiece of Easter Saturday's Lampeter XR action at Aberaeron in support of the main rebellion in London. It took more time and energy than we had expected but, in the process, we got to know each other better and had some fun in addition to the blood and sweat (no tears). Using artistic inspiration from Cathy, we made a lightweight but relatively sturdy replica of a coffin with strong images of the potential fate of Aberaeron and similar coastal communities in the event of sea level rises. It was part of an extraordinary exercise in group creativity that unfolded over the week, as we designed the coffin, the action, the leaflets and the publicity in a spirit of shared support and commitment. It seems hard to believe that Lampeter and Tregaron XR put this together between one Saturday and the next! It was great to be part of something that made such an impact due to its drama, when we were no more than 20 people. Everyone has their own part to play in the changes we must make to the way we live. Some are good with words, some are good with food, some can repair broken things. I think in pictures, so my part is to take photographs, to make banners and paintings that talk about the world that we are destroying.

The banner-maker - Elaine Good morning little sister! Impossible aeronaut Bombus hortorum Bringing gifts of strawberries and cherries and thyme and life itself. Wordless with grief and rage I see you again and send you to London To speak for me. To plead for us all. 9

Plumber’s Plog* If you look up “what happens in a minute” online, you will find lists of things, all kinds of statistics, ranging from the awe-inspiring (babies born) to the horrendous (murders). But - just a minute - I don’t want to do that. I would prefer to think about things that I myself know about personally … Like, I know that my car, at 30 mph, will travel half a mile in a minute; and I know that if I walk for a minute, I’ll cover about one-tenth of that distance. The car engine will rotate about two thousand times, whereas my heart will beat around 80 times, and I will breathe maybe 20 times in a minute. Perhaps I’m more efficient than the car? I seem to be more relaxed! In one minute, I can think of hundreds of different things, and follow trains of thought which other people might find illogical, but which make perfect sense to me. A bit of a certain song, for example, might lead to a good feeling about an old friend, which might remind me of a business deal that I took up years ago, and give me a new idea for a painting. Strange, isn’t it? Just a minute - am I straying from the task? Or is the task that I’ve set myself to find the way forward? I did actually sit down once and literally watch the clock for an hour, to find out what it was like, and saw it move from minute to minute all the way round. “Just a minute” seems a long time when you’re waiting and watching. Or when you’re enjoying the party and the company you’re with, it goes by in a flash, doesn’t it? But just a minute - it occurs to me now that I don’t know what the next minute will bring, do I? What if the coming minute was entirely different from everything I have ever known? I hope, actually, that I would be glad, even if it was scary - because I look forward to the day when things stop being “more of the same old thing”. It might happen in “just a minute”…

The laughing call of the Green woodpecker has been a feature of our soundscape in Llanddewi Brefi this spring. It is a scarce bird in Ceredigion and although quite large and colourful we have not been able to find it. The recent release of a recording of bird song by the RSPB has received media attention; live performances featuring birds and musicians - including a reprise of the famous cello and nightingale duet - have also caught the public imagination. The reduction in the number of many of our song birds has presumably been the reason for this. Unfortunately the nightingale is one bird we are unlikely to hear in this part of Wales as we are too far west and therefore beyond its range. (Incidentally, the bird said to have been banished by St David for interrupting his sermons was most likely to have been the blackcap, aka the poor man’s nightingale, or possibly the songthrush which often bursts into song just as the light fades on a summer’s evening.) The calls of cetaceans are considered to help relieve stress; birdsong has been recommended to relieve depression and anxiety. A blackbird starting to sing when a thunderstorm has passed can be a spiritual experience. David Price

WELCOME DAY Llangadog 16 June Imagine that you have had to flee your country and all that you treasure from your previous life and find yourself and your family in a strange country with a language that you either do not speak well or do not speak at all. You are given rather cramped accommodation in a city but are not allowed to work and earn a living and do not know whether you will be allowed to stay or not. This is the plight of a large number of asylum-seekers in Wales. On Sunday 16 June, with the support of Lampeter Quakers, a group of us will be entertaining some 34 refugee families and individuals from Swansea with a fun day out in Llangadog. We plan to provide a vegetarian lunch. If the weather is kind the children can play on the Common and we hope to organise some music and games in the hall. Any helpers would be most welcome. We particularly need one or more people to be in charge of the kitchen (to put out the food, organise the washing up etc.) and others to welcome the visitors and help with the children. Offers of vegetarian food would also be greatly appreciated. If you could offer help in any of these ways please contact: Theresa Haine, 01550 777535, info@moneyformadagascar.org 10

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group Lampeter & District - ‘Just a Minute’ ‘Just a minute’…a minute in time. This sounds a pretty solid concept, but is it? If I say I’ll just be a minute do I mean exactly 60 seconds? Probably not as sometimes I am early. At other times I may be late! When my alarm clock goes off, did I set it to the correct time the night before? I will have set it without my glasses on, so it could be a variation on the correct time. This shows that minutes in time are difficult to measure and are fluid, well my minutes are at any rate! Am I aware which fraction of the 60 second minute I can measure? When my alarm clock alarms me into waking up is it the first or the last ring which I pay attention to! My minute is often not conforming to the 60 second rule minute. How therefore can I measure it? A mayfly only lives for about a day so a minute is a large proportion of it’s life. I’m sure I have, or am about to, commit the Radio 4 ‘Just a Minute’ sins of repetition, hesitation and deviation. It’s certainly taken longer than a minute and I’ve had to delete and cut and paste to make sense of what I’m writing. I shall move on….. My cat has a better sense of time than I or my alarm clock. She wakes me up at 5am regularly. Because we mess around with time when we put the clocks forward she got confused for a while! The dogs are aware of our time in the morning and stay in their beds until we get up. Our young dog is very aware of time and he tells us when it is time for their dinner, or time for bed, or time for their last wee! He reminds me by just nudging me when I’ve forgotten to do things. Clever dog. In maybe ‘Just a Minute’ a garden bumble bee made the decision to make a nest in a nest-box which has been used by pied-flycatchers for many years. Why? Now I watch bees from my seat in the kitchen, instead of the black and white birds. I am lucky that I can still walk using crutches and dogs to hold onto. Early in the morning I go and stand above our woods. Now cuckoos are cuckooing, sheep are bleating, I am thinking. I take a minute (my minute of course!). ‘What is this life if full of care we have no time to stand and stare (William Henry Davies). ‘Just a Minute’ I’ll be there, I’m almost ready!! Is this a definite minute or just a maybe? Our Support Group meets on the first Monday of the month from 1.30-3.30, in the back room of The Mustard Seed, Lampeter. We welcome anybody with MS, carers, and anybody wanting to know more, from wherever you are. You are also welcome at our Aberystwyth group which meets in the new Tesco’s community/charity room 12-2pm on the 1st FRIDAY of the month. “Perma-solutions Season; Designing for climate crisis.” August 2019 to March 2020. Organised by LPG/TL film group. After decades of activism by environmentalists and more recent actions by Extinction Rebels as well as David Attenborough’s documentary and Greta Thunberg’s school strikes, the UK Parliament became the first in the world to pass a NON-BINDING vote to declare a climate emergency. Now what? I have been around long enough to remember plenty of non-binding votes and wordy declarations. The old saying goes, “Deeds, not words”. And talk is cheap. Pigs will fly before our ruling elites will think about doing something and it will be too little, too late. However, we are at a moment where there are now a lot of people who are aware of the climate crisis, but feel helpless in what they can do. This fact has led the LPG/TL film group to organise a season of events and films that will have tried and tested permaculture methods (dubbed Perma-solutions) that will hopefully give inspiration and ideas to participants as to what they can realistically do NOW to prepare for the climate crisis. This season will focus on one of the biggest issues in climate change Sustainable food production in a changing climate. The season will last from August 2019 to March 2020. More will be planned later. Currently, the programme is as follows: 3 August: “Permaculture taster day, on the principles and practices of permaculture”. A whole day workshop led by Angie Polkey at Denmark Farm (see ads on page 36 for more details). 19 October: “Humans and Food.” two inspirational films on food growers and sustainability, and a workshop. November (date TBC): Another screening of the award winning documentary, “Inhabit- a permaculture perspective.” January 2020 (date TBC): “Growing food in small spaces”. Films on this topic and a Q and A featuring Huw Richards, author of “Veg in one bed”. March 2020 (date TBC): “Swales in Wales? Water management in a time of climate change”. Films and workshop on dealing with too little and too much water. Apart from the Taster day, all the above events will be at Victoria Hall and are free (donations welcome). Full details will be in future Grapevines. I hope the season not only gives people hope but inspires everyone to seek more education and skills to face climate change. Hock

How I learnt to sing from my heart: Raga and First Nature Twelve years ago I’d just returned from a retreat where I’d realised I needed to start singing again. Something that stopped in any meaningful way at age 10: I can pinpoint the moment. I opened my inbox and there was an invitation to an “Indian Singing” workshop. What did that mean I wondered? Serendipity! An opportunity to trust the universe. That first weekend of singing with my Raga teacher Rajeswar Battacharya was a delight. I had never heard of Raga, and the nearest I’d gotten to any Indian singing was the chanting we did on retreat. Beginner’s mind opened me to receive this teaching wholeheartedly, and for the following two weeks the ‘Sa’ resonated in my body, and I realised this was something I must continue. The Sa is the first and last note of the Indian scale, the anchor note, and rather like ‘ohm’ it is said to contain all the sounds of the universe.

The first Lampeter Book Festival/ Gwyl Llyfrau Llanbedr Pont Steffan concluded with Gillian Clarke (former National Poet of Wales 2008-16) talking about the significance of poetry in these troubled times. She ended her reading with a poem called Insect about the importance of insects to the survival of man. Gillian read with Samantha Wynne Rhydderch, a lecturer in Creative Writing at UWTSD, and Ros Hudis and Dawn Morgan, alumni of the MA in Creative Writing at Lampeter, who are now published poets. Gillian was delighted to see her poem in the Lampeter Writers‘ Workshop anthology Light After Snow, and praised the longevity and achievements of the workshop she helped found in 1984. She was proud it was the longest running weekly writing group in Wales. She thanked the organisers for their hard work in co-ordinating the two day festival celebrating writers and writing, and hoped it would become an annual event. Sue Moules

Since then I have attended workshops every year when Rajeswar, who is based in Kolkata, comes to Europe to give teachings and concerts. Inevitably that initial openness was tested, and I have been through many and ongoing struggles in the journey to connect heart and mind through singing, but each workshop has taken me deeper and has been more rewarding than any other practice. The programme of workshops and concerts is organised by his English partner, student and musical colleague Suekali. Rajeswar and Suekali sincerely believe that everyone can sing, and I have seen this again and again as new people come and find their voice, whilst those who are already confident singers of folk, jazz, indie and classical, become more natural, expressive and finely tuned. The process is aided by wonderful First Nature exercises, a compassionate practice of bodybreath-voice work led by Suekali. 12

So I am very excited that they have agreed to come to Lampeter to give a concert on Friday 6 September at Victoria Hall, and a workshop on Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 September. The workshop will be in Lampeter, probably at my home. They will also run workshops in London, Brighton, Scotland, Voice Camp (West Country), and France. I’ll share booking details in the next Grapevine, including the Early Bird deadline. In the meantime see www.thesingingheart.com For background information and testimonials from people that have sung with Rajeswar and Suekali. Dylis Pugh www.dylispugh.co.uk

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND Helping Hands The volunteers at Long Wood Community Woodland have been incredibly busy over the last couple of months creating and installing our new bird hide made from our own Larch timber and sawn on our mill. In fact, the volunteers have put in many extra hours, outside of our usual Wednesdays, to get it done, and it looks fantastic! Come rain or shine We didn’t have the best weather conditions for much of the build, virtually every time we scheduled time on it, the weather decided to be awful! Though it did make for some lovely rainbows and some very atmospheric steam rising from the ground around us! Unusually, we saw a beautiful rainbow reflected upon the steam rising from the field opposite where we were working, so every cloud has a silver (or rainbowcoloured) lining! We were also saved by a neighbour who came and lent us his blow torch to get a fire going, so we could char the ends of our roundwood uprights to preserve them. The weather that day was so bad, we’d never have got our fire going, or got the uprights in, and it would have pushed back the build! Our volunteers really are a hardy bunch and carried on through the horribly inclement weather thrown at them, to produce something that we are all immensely proud and pleased with. We all enjoyed working together to produce this latest addition to our woods. Long Wood has an especially big and heartfelt thanks to give to these wonderful human beings, we simply couldn’t have done it without them! More Trees, more Improvements If all that was not enough fantastic work, during the time of the build the volunteers also planted more trees, put backing and stakes on our forestry warning signs and created a willow arbour not far from the bird hide! There are bits and pieces left to do on the bird hide but it is, in essence, complete and looking fabulous opposite one of our new ponds. Welcoming Pine Martens Just the other day Josie Bridges from the Vincent Wildlife Trust came in to help us put up the Pine Marten boxes we had spent a day building with her a few months ago! Charity Walk In other happenings at Long Wood we hosted the “Dias 70” walkers at our visitor centre, who were Walking 70 miles in 4 days for Macmillan Cancer Support, as 11 March 2019 would have been local ace footballer and headteacher, David “Dias”

Williams’ 70th birthday. Unfortunately he passed away, due to cancer at the age of 39, so on what would have been his 70th, all his family and friends decided to walk and raise money in his memory. Art in the Woods We also hosted a fabulous two day watercolour course with talented artist Martin Cook (you may have seen his card designs for sale at our visitor centre), we had a few people book the course, and of those who came, there were very positive things to say about Martin’s teaching and what a thoroughly nice person he is. We are hoping that we can convince him to come back and run another weekend of watercolour workshops in the Autumn. Lovely new Community Trees Saturday 6 April was our “Community Tree Planting Day” running alongside our “Saturday Surgery”. We had a few people turn up to give us a hand planting and we estimated that another 300 trees were planted in those few hours! Future thoughts As always, all of our staff have been busy keeping things going here at Long Wood. From keeping paths open, to supplying us with firewood to sell, to sourcing and taking out timber for our mill and milling the timber we need for various projects in the wood, and taking in timber orders, to brain storming ideas for fun events and the continuing future of Long Wood. Sorry about no write up for May, but things have been a bit hectic at home. I missed the ‘Hiraeth’ issue and this would have resonance with me, as soon I will be moving up North, living in the shelter of Hadrian’s Wall. However, in the woods the bird hide is now finished and the ponds are slowly filling with aquatic life. The summer migrants are returning, with flycatchers being seen around the visitor centre, and swallows and cuckoos flying round in the woods. On a different note: stacked wood and stone sculptures have been appearing along the track to the hide. These are great artistic features and we hope to see more, given that we are applying for a grant to create a sculpture trail. So if there are any artists out there who can provide metal sculptures, please phone Jon for more details. On the downside: Phytophthora ramorum has been identified in Olwen wood! This is a fungus-like pathogen called a water mould. It causes extensive damage and death to a wide range of trees and other plants. Larch trees are particularly susceptible and unfortunately Natural Resources Wales (NRW) have issued felling orders for these infected trees, to be removed later in the summer. Long Wood is awaiting further details and will pass these on as soon as they are received. That’s all for now. See you in the woods. Bert Lewis

We were joined by Anthony Vaughn from The Wallich Charity who gave us an insight into the issue of homelessness, specifically in the Aberystwyth area where he is based. Their aim is to help people get off the streets and stay off by providing support, education and guidance. One of their recent innovations is to provide large secure lockers for people to store their belongings safely and in the dry. We enjoyed a magnificent tea and Anthony judged the monthly competition ‘An unusual

info@longwood-lampeter.org.uk

utensil’ which was won by Iona. Who knew there were so many varieties of garlic press? Our May meeting featured the owls from New Quay Birds of Prey and we were joined by members of surrounding WI’s. Liz and Amber gave a fascinating talk on the habitat, behaviour and idiosyncrasies of the birds, who were all impeccably behaved. The star of the show was Itch, a Little Owl who viewed his/her (apparently terribly difficult to tell) audience with imperious disdain. A hearty tea and splendiferous raffle completed a splendid evening. We meet at 7.30pm on the second 27

Thursday of the month in Cellan Millenium Hall. Instead of a meeting in June we will be having our summer outing to Sculpture Heaven in Rhydlewis. However all will be back to normal in July when Raymond Williams will be discussing life as a vet. A raffle is held and a sales table of preowned books and dvds is a regular feature. You do not have to be a member to join the fun, come along for a taster and meet our friendly company of ladies. We look forward to welcoming some new faces to our merry band in the coming months. Dysgu'r Dychymyg: Traddodiadau Doethineb a Gweledigaeth Gysegredig Cyhoeddi Cynhadledd Undydd ag Academi Temenos Dydd Mercher 3 Gorffennaf 2019 10 am - 4.45 pm Llyfrgell y Sylfaenwyr, Prifysgol Cymru Y Drindod Dewi Sant Campws Llanbedr Pont Steffan Rydym yn falch o groesawu'r Academi Temenos ar ei hymweliad cyntaf â Llanbedr Pont Steffan, mewn symudiad a hwylusir gan Sefydliad Harmoni newydd y Brifysgol. Rydym yn gobeithio y bydd ymweliad yr Academi yn cynnig cyfle gwerthfawr i siarad am y gwirioneddau ysbrydol sy'n sail i fodolaeth ddynol. Dywed yr Academi am y diwrnod, ‘Gobeithiwn greu ‘temenos’, lle cysegredig, i annog cyfnewid syniadau ynghylch y gwerthoedd rydym wedi'u hetifeddu ac rydym am eu trosglwyddo i genedlaethau'r dyfodol’. Mae ‘temenos’ yn lle cysegredig, wedi'i neilltuo o ofod cyffredin y byd bob dydd, lle gallwn ni fynd i adnewyddu ein hysbryd, cymuno â'r dwyfol, neu brofi swyn natur. Fe ddeilliodd yr Academi wrth lansio’r cylchgrawn Temenos ym 1980 gan grŵp bach o awduron a meddylwyr a oedd yn cynnwys yr ysgolhaig William Blake chwedlonol, Kathleen Raine, ynghyd â Keith Critchlow, awdur llawer o lyfrau ar geometreg sanctaidd. Fel mae datganiad gweledigaeth yr Academi yn ei ddatgan, ‘Credwn fod dynion a menywod yn bennaf oll yn fodau ag anghenion ysbrydol y mae'n rhaid eu meithrin os ydym yn gobeithio cyflawni ein potensial a bod yn hapus. Ein pwrpas ... yw astudio dysgu'r Dychymyg, yn y celfyddydau a'r ddysgeidiaethau sy'n mynegi'r wybodaeth ysbrydol draddodiadol honno'. Bydd pedwar siaradwr nodedig yn ymuno â ni: Mae Hilary Davies wedi cyhoeddi pedwar casgliad o farddoniaeth y cyhoeddwyd y diweddaraf, Exile and the Kingdom, ym mis Tachwedd 2016. Yn ei sgwrs, 'Sacred Vision and the Landscape', bydd Hilary yn edrych ar sut mae tri gwahanol fardd, David Jones, Gerard Manley Hopkins a Dylan Thomas, wedi cael eu hysbrydoli gan dirwedd Cymru i agor byd gweledigaethol y dychymyg, gan godi cwestiynau ynghylch sut rydym wedi ein hymgorffori yn nhirweddau’r gorffennol, sut mae tirweddau presennol yn cynnig dimensiynau ysbrydol i ni, a pha stiwardiaeth sydd arnom ar gyfer y dyfodol. Bydd Howard Hull yn siarad ar ‘Storming into Beauty: Ruskin, Turner and the Ethics of the Dust’. Mae ganddo gymwysterau arbennig ar gyfer y dasg hon, gan ei fod yn Gyfarwyddwr Brantwood, cyn gartref y beirniad celf pwysig John Ruskin yn ardal y Llynnoedd. Ruskin a luniodd y term ' heartsight ' i ddisgrifio gweledigaeth yr arlunydd Joseph Turner o 'harddwch hanfodol', yr oedd yn ei gweld fel grym sy'n rhoi bywyd, asiantaeth lle mae hoffter a charedigrwydd yn creu ecoleg sy’n cynnal ar gyfer pawb yng nghanol yr anhrefn atomeiddio mewn byd sydd fel arall yn greulon. O’r blaen roedd Grevel Lindop yn Athro Saesneg ym Mhrifysgol Manceinion. Mae wedi cyhoeddi saith casgliad o gerddi yn ogystal â llyfrau teithio a bywgraffiadau ac ar hyn o bryd mae'n ysgrifennu llyfr ar fywyd ysbrydol a barddoniaeth W.B. Yeats, sydd, yn briodol, yn destun eianerchiad, ‘W.B. Yeats a Chwest y Bardd am Weledigaeth ’. Mae Grevel yn dweud wrthym fod barddoniaeth Yeats yn datgelu camau ei archwiliad o grefydd India, ocwltiaeth y Gorllewin, ysbrydoliaeth a thraddodiadau brodorol Gwyddelig, wrth chwilio am y gwirionedd sylfaenol y credai eu bod i gyd yn deillio ohono. Darlithydd Anrhydeddus ym Mhrifysgol Caint yw Joseph Milne, lle bu'n addysgu ar y cwrs MA mewn Cyfriniaeth a Phrofiad Crefyddol nes iddo ymddeol yn 2013. Bydd ei sgwrs, ‘Cosmic Harmony and the Sacred City’ yn tynnu ar fythau ac athroniaeth hynafol i ddangos y berthynas barhaol rhwng trefn ddwyfol y cosmos a bywyd dynol. Bydd y diwrnod yn cael ei gynnal yn amgylchedd moethus Llyfrgell Sylfaenwyr y Brifysgol a bydd digon o amser ar gyfer cwestiynau a thrafodaethau. Gwahoddir pawb ond mae lle yn gyfyngedig felly byddwch gystal â chofrestru (gweler isod). Mae'r digwyddiad yn rhad ac am ddim ac fe ddarperir cinio llysieuol, ond cofiwch gofrestru ar y wefan erbyn dydd Gwener 28 Mehefin (yn gynt o syn bosibl) os hoffech gael cinio, ac fel bod gennym niferoedd ar gyfer lluniaeth yn y bore a'r prynhawn. A gwiriwch y wefan am unrhyw ddiweddariadau. https://www.uwtsd.ac.uk/humanities-performingarts/conferences/temenos-academy-day-conference/ Rydym yn gobeithio’ch gweld chi yno! 29

The Learning of the Imagination: Wisdom Traditions and Sacred Vision Announcing a one Day Conference with the Temenos Academy Wednesday 3 July 2019 10am – 4.45pm The Founders Library, University of Wales Trinity Saint David Lampeter Campus We are proud to welcome the Temenos Academy on its first visit to Lampeter, in a move facilitated by the University’s new Harmony Institute. We hope that the Academy’s visit offers a valuable chance to talk about the spiritual truths which underpin human existence. The Academy says of the day, ‘We hope to create a ‘temenos’, a sacred space, to encourage the exchange of ideas about the values we have inherited and which we wish to pass to future generations’. A ‘temenos’ is a sacred place, set aside from the ordinary space of the everyday world, where we can go to refresh our spirits, commune with the divine, or experience the enchantment of nature. The Academy owes its origins to the launch in 1980 of the Temenos journal by a small group of writers and thinkers which included the legendary William Blake scholar, Kathleen Raine, along with Keith Critchlow, the author of many books on sacred geometry. As the Academy’s vision statement declares, ‘We believe that men and women are first and foremost beings with spiritual needs that have to be nourished if we hope to fulfil our potential and be happy. Our purpose...is to study the learning of the Imagination, both in the arts and the teachings that express that traditional spiritual knowledge’. We will be joined by four distinguished speakers: Hilary Davies has published four collections of poetry of which the latest, Exile and the Kingdom, was published in November 2016. In her talk, ‘Sacred Vision and the Landscape’, Hilary will look at how three different poets, David Jones, Gerard Manley Hopkins and Dylan Thomas, have been inspired by the Welsh landscape to open up the visionary world of the imagination, raising questions about how we are embedded in past landscapes, how present landscapes offer us spiritual dimensions, and what stewardship we owe for the future. Howard Hull will speak on ‘Storming into Beauty: Ruskin, Turner and the Ethics of the Dust’. He is particularly well-qualified for this task, being Director of Brantwood, the great art-critic John Ruskin's former home in the Lake District. It was Ruskin who coined the term ‘heartsight’ to describe the painter Joseph Turner’s vision of ‘vital beauty’, which he saw as a life-giving force, an agency in which affection and kindness create a sustaining ecology for all amid the atomising chaos of an otherwise brutal world. Grevel Lindop was formerly Professor of English at Manchester University. He has published seven collections of poems as well as travel books and biographies and is currently writing a book on the spiritual life and poetry of W.B. Yeats, who is, fittingly, the subject of his talk, ‘W.B. Yeats and the Poet's Quest for Vision’. Grevel tells us that Yeats’ poetry reveals the stages of his exploration of Indian religion, Western occultism, spiritualism and indigenous Irish traditions, in search of the underlying truth from which he believed they all derived. Joseph Milne is Honorary Lecturer at the University of Kent where he taught on the MA course in Mysticism and Religious Experience until his retirement in 2013. His talk, ‘Cosmic Harmony and the Sacred City’. will draw upon ancient myths and philosophy to show the enduring relation between the divine order of the cosmos and human life.

The day will take place in the venerable surroundings of the University’s Founders Library and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.. All are invited but space is limited so please register (see below). The event is free and a vegetarian lunch will be provided, but please register on the website by Friday 28 June (preferably earlier) if you would like lunch, and so that we have numbers for morning and afternoon refreshments. And please check the website for any updates. https://www.uwtsd.ac.uk/humanities-performingarts/conferences/temenos-academy-day-conference/ We hope to see you there! Llewod Llambed / Lampeter Lionesses News I missed the copy date for the GV last month and as a consequence you all must be wondering what happened in Llewod’s final league game of the season! Well, our last outing was against Aber Uni 3 in a tight, physical game. We were down to 7 players on court so, no subs to relieve the injured and under the weather Llewod players but that did not stop everyone pulling together and fighting to the very last whistle. Final score was 28-21 to Aber Uni 3. Which meant Llewod had secured second place in league 2. Nominated player went to Carwen and Captain's Player to Sian. Da iawn pawb! Llewod Llambed has given its all in every game against some pretty tough competition. As a newly formed, self-coached team, made up primarily from players who have not played since school we have done amazingly well. Just juggling matches on top of work, small children and other commitments is commendable and our players have shown amazing dedication to the club and their team. Many thanks to our club captain Elen, who has been with us every week despite not being able to play herself - we are looking forwards to having you back on court next season! And huge thanks to Carwen and Lynn for umpiring throughout the season - not an easy job! The league teams came together to celebrate the season and to award prizes at The Hungry Ram in Penwuch. Was a lovely evening where Cardigan Diamonds were crowned League one champions and Aber Uni 3 winners of league 2. Well done to our own, Natalie and Georgie who were runners up for Team Player of the Season and huge congratulations to Carwen who deservedly took the Llewod Team Player trophy home! Well done to the team for turning up every Wednesday and always giving their best and a big thank you to the non leaguer’s for always supporting our league players. After a busy season for the newly formed Lampeter Lionesses, we thought that maybe players would want to take a break from netball twice a week – but no…we are so fortunate to have been able to enter not one, but two teams into the friendly ‘Leagues4You’ league held on Monday nights. Llambed Llawen and The Cubs, were decided by drawing names out of a hat to ensure a mix of players on each team. The two other teams entered into the league were Bont Blades and Tregaron Turfs; a team

composed of Tregaron Ladies Football squad. Having played 4 games already, The Cubs are in fourth position while LLambed Llawen are holding 2nd place. The top 3 nominated players on equal points are Georgie WA The Cubs, Natalie GA Ll.Llawen and Charlie GA The Turfs. The captains of both teams also highlighted exceptional performances from Catrin, Elin and Lisa; some of the younger Cubs and, young at heart Sue who was likened to the Duracell Bunny! Matches continue throughout May. WE ARE ONE! It is now a whole year since the formation of the club Llambed Llewod and we would like to thank every single one of you who have attended training, participated in League games, played in charity fun events and friendlies, attended organisational meetings and courses, to all our sponsors and financial contributors, to Lampeter Leisure centre and staff, to the float decorators, scoreboard designers and cake makers, trip organisers and social secretaries, match article and report writers, kit washers and lift givers, you have all been amazing and made this club the success it is. THANK YOU Llewod Llambed meet every Thursday, 7-8.30pm, Lampeter Leisure Centre, £3.50 All welcome. Lynn Humphreys

Lampeter Food Project Celebrates its Second Birthday

DIWRNOD BLASU PARAMAETHU

Thursday 9 May saw the second birthday of the Lampeter Food Project founded and run by a group of volunteers. This is a community meal Volunteers at The Food Project: Carol, Mick and Lindsay and distribution of out of date and surplus food. “This is vital with today’s economy” says a young man. “Without this I’d be struggling” says a pensioner. “I like the mix of ages and the chance to chat with people” says a person who lives alone. “It’s great” says a student “really helps, and we like being part of the town ”. “There’s a sense of community here; it’s lovely having a meal cooked for you- and no washing up to do”. A rota of volunteers give up their time to prepare and cook a meal from the donated items that would become food waste without the Lampeter Food Project.

Every Minute Counts by J. Sandover

by Derek Moore

A quatrain of breath Keeping time suspended Ticking minutes Melodic with birdsong

I thought I tasted it once, but as I devoured it I began to retch. I thought I heard it once, but when I strained to listen it morphed into deception.

My baby sleeps My dreams roam Our wealth in Eden Nourished

I thought I saw it once, but as I turned to peer the glimmer faded.

Every minute a blessing A good return The wonder of creation Raising profit

I thought I felt it once, but I unlocked my heart only to find a vacuum.

A Siren call Market-Society cannot seduce My ears are full enchanted My baby soft asleep

I’ve shopped many lifetimes to purchase these gifts, finally realising they can never be bought.

Mother is Here by Kiara

Mother is here Her startling beautiful eyes still blaze when she is angry A paler blue than I knew them as a child I can see the tears waiting in them They are used to falling since he died The fork held in her small hand is pushing the food into little mounds and valleys on her plate as she speaks At my age, she says, every day feels like borrowed time She stands outside the front door smoking a cigarette and watches the little birds at the bird feeder I massage her shoulders and neck Make her breakfast just how she likes it She buys me a pale blue and white china tea set with gold rims Pale blue like her eyes But not really Nothing is like them On her last night here we hold each other in a goodnight embrace for a long time Then look into each others eyes She lightly, tenderly caresses my face Then climbs the stairs with a little groan

Falling apart with you by Karen Gemma Brewer All I wanted was a new refrain another chance to sing my song to you playful music notes that fall like rain renew our world and brighten up the blue Each day opens clean and fresh blank page awaiting your paint brush make your time no need to rush shake the world disturb the dust strike your metal never let it rust We both straddle the same broom each night howling at the moon reface the music claim that tune take our chants to the last saloon share a basket under one balloon We’ll all fall apart one day return to water air and clay each grain of sand that falls is gone another note played from our song keep on singing while your voice is strong until you hear the angels - sing along

Good Vibrations by Polly Phemus Everything vibrates, because atoms vibrate, even at absolute zero, which doesn't exist because of the Third Law of Thermodynamics, as any fule kno. Hence recorded sound, and here's a thought: what if other media also passively record, because they're made of atoms too? Then if our senses could somehow decode these vibrations, maybe we could reconstruct what made them, as in hearing music. A possible explanation of ESP, who knows? Raudive recorded voices of people who were absent, as in dead. Quantum Mechanics (who are a bit like car mechanics, you can't understand them either) say there are parallel universes and we could be in any of them (but then they also say electrons spin clockwise and anticlockwise at the same time: ask next door about this one). Funny old world.

A few of the lesser known saints... St Aeddan Foeddog / Aidan / Aidus / Moedhog / Masdog / Maidocus / Moedok Remembered 31st January. Enwogion Cymru: The son of Caw ab Geraint, and lived in the early part of the sixth century. He was a disciple of St David at Menevia, from whence he departed into Ireland, and was appointed the first bishop of Ferns; and it was this circumstance that induced the clergy of Menevia in a later age to assert that the bishopric of Ferns was once subject to the archbishopric of St Davids. With respect to the name, he is called by the Irish “Moedhog and Masdog,” and by Giraldus “Maidocus”. John of Teignmouth says: This holy person is named "Aidanus" in the Life of St David, but in his own life, "Aidus," and at Menevia, in the Church of St David, he is called “Moedok,” which is an Irish name, and his festival is observed with great veneration at that place. Giraldus relates a marvellous story of the manner in which St Aeddan carried over a swarm of bees into Ireland; for such creatures were never seen in that country before, and have never been seen in Menevia since. (There are now bee farms in Ceredigion). Traces of his memory are still retained in Pembrokeshire, as he is the reputed founder of Llanhuadain or Llawhaden in that county, and the churches of Norton and West-Haroldston are ascribed to him under the name of AEDDAN Madog. MARTIN CARTHY Martin Carthy was at the heart of the Folk Music Revival of the 1960’s, inspiring a generation and winning respect from immediate contemporaries such as Paul Simon and his lifelong friend and admirer, Bob Dylan. To both he taught his arrangement of ‘Scarborough Fair’ with its herbal refrain. Dylan turned it into his ‘Girl from the North Country’, and for Simon & Garfunkel it became a massive signature hit. As well as being an engaged and engaging, haunting and edgy, virtuoso solo performer with an encyclopaedic knowledge of English folk song and a characteristic guitar style, for the last five decades, he has also been part of the most important line-ups in folk. In the sixties and seventies he was partnered by the great fiddler, Dave Swarbrick. He also played in the Albion Country Band, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey, Blue Murder, and with members of Fairport Convention. In later years more accolades followed as he performed with his wife, Norma Waterson, and his daughter, Eliza Carthy. More recently he provided guitar and vocals in the fusion folk group, The Imagined Village: a visionary celebration of contemporary multicultural Britain in which traditional folk themes were taken up and embellished by musicians from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Over 50 years he has received countless folk awards, and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to Folk Music.

SECOND INCREDIBLE EDIBLE/ BWYD BENDIGEDIG GARDEN IN LAMPETER Welsh onions, tomatoes, spinach, rosemary, marjoram, nasturtiums, chard, as well as salad leaves have been planted outside The Wash Tub, not only in planters, but in old denim jeans to give this space outside the laundrette a distinctive feel. Custard Queens WI would like to thank the generosity of Lampeter shops for donating items: D.L Williams Home Centre for the paint for the railings, Robert’s Garden Centre for compost and a watering can, Incredible Edible Llambed for Magic Merlin Compost. Incredible Edible is a nationwide project to encourage people to grow food and to brighten up those bare scraps of land found everywhere. It was founded in Todmorden in 2008 and quickly spread to other towns. The ethos of Incredible Edible is: “to believe in the power of small actions, and growing as a visible sign of a kinder community.” The seedlings planted outside The Wash Tub are not yet ready to be picked, but when they are the notices will be changed to say “ready to pick” and “please help yourself”. Incredible Edible projects help by attracting butterflies and bees to pollinate the herbs and vegetables. As a Transition Town Lampeter encourages sustainable endeavours that help the community, as well as brightening up the town. Custard Queens WI 40
