The Secret Travels of the Grapevine… Grapevine is now available around the world: issuu.com/ lampetergrapevine/stacks … but we are also really interested to know how far and wide the paper versions have travelled; what local villages and communities it has reached and what route it has taken - Or perhaps how many people have passed it on to someone else? Are you planning any travels over the coming months? If so please don’t forget to pack your copy of Grapevine - we’re always fascinated to find out where in the world it goes with you. Can your copy of Grapevine be the most environmentally friendly traveller? Or will yours be shared in a variety of unusual ways, be found in an quirky local location, be upcycled or recycled? Where will your copy of Grapevine end up? Why don’t you send us your photos: lampetergrapevine@gmail.com and we’ll publish them in future issues. Eds.

Croeso / Welcome to this issue of the Grapevine Picture this … it’s time for a long journey by train - so what happens? ... Gadgets out, power on, earphones in, music or audible book selected, wi-fi connected, and off we go! How different life has become in the Digital Era! But is the ability to remain productive whilst travelling across the country a good thing? I guess from an employers point of view it must be … but does the constant pressure to continue working at all times take something away from the joys of experiencing the journey itself? I suppose it could be viewed from many angles … and I’m not even sure that an individual’s response would be the same on similar but separate occasions. I tend to find the process of working and travelling quite an enjoyable and effective one, as it creates a focussed and defined time slot in which to achieve a set task; and this can ease some of the pressures that build when taken away from your usual work base. Train travel is far more enjoyable than driving and so much easier to plan now, with train Apps that allow instant booking and e-tickets to remove the hassle of queueing to buy tickets. `The journey can be more relaxed with the chance to appreciate the changing landscape and maybe even a bit of people-watching! On this journey I observed the majority of passengers hooked up to a range of devices, I even managed to rescue a distraught

teenager whose phone battery had faded! So, should we be embracing the digital era or keeping new technology at arms length (or further away)? It seems that through history new inventions have often been shunned when they first appear but that eventually we can’t do without them. Well, good or bad- that’s for individuals to decide - but I can’t even begin to imagine what life would be like if we had to communicate, collate, design, produce and distribute this newsletter without the aid of digital technology! So why not make the most of it and enjoy it while you can. Darllenwch yn hapus / Happy reading. Angie Martin, Editor

Merry Makers’ Women’s Group Summer Trips On 25 July we visited the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The journey was scenic, the day sunny and on arrival at the station we were greeted by staff, made comfortable in the café until our train left thirty minutes later. A lovely train, a reserved carriage for the group and we thoroughly enjoyed it as we chugged along. All rounded off by a visit to Charlies. A great day out. In August we had a trip to visit the End of Summer Art Exhibition at Waunifor, which was an enjoyable day out viewing paintings and sculpture. Merry Makers’ Women’s Group meets on Wednesdays at St James’ Hall, Cwmann between 10.30am and 3pm and welcomes new members. There is a free car park and disabled access, and the charge of £3 includes a vegetarian lunch, refreshments and all activities. Local Business Wales Having noticed that many local shops are closing myself and my partner felt as though we wanted to do something about it and use our computer skills to set up this new low-cost advertising agency for local businesses to showcase them and connect locals with businesses in their area. For just £2 per month locals get a featured advert on the website, a listing in the directory - and regular shares across our social media pages on Facebook, twitter and Instagram, reaching thousands of locals. One of our clients Shion Buschner has stated that within a couple of weeks she has seen her business dramatically improve with new customers who have responded to adverts they have seen through LBW. We are also offering services for web design, graphic design and advertising management. Contact: info@lbw.wales Stuart Hampton

Update from Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed Incredible Edible Lampeter

Tomatillos are nearly ready for salsa-making

Kale and rainbow chard for the winter

Our lovely bed outside the Co-op has continued to be productive over the Summer and it has been great to see so many different people picking the produce, and even laying down bolted shoots as mulch. The tomatoes and tomatillos* are ripening nicely and we will hopefully have been able to put them into a good salsa for the Harvest Share supper on Friday 21 September. The Food Project have also picked some of our beans to add to a soup. We now have our own email address and a Facebook page: edible.llambed@outlook.com www.facebook.com/ediblellambed We will be adding to these over the next few weeks, so please “Like” us! We are also registered with the national Incredible Edible Network, though we don't yet appear on their Wales page, which has twelve other groups listed. This will give us access to a wealth of materials and information. Over the next month or so we want to change the plantings in the Co-op bed to include some plants that are winter-hardy, so keep an eye open for new plantings, like the kale and chard pictured here. We also hope to get out to meet more people and groups in Lampeter to spread the word and grow so we can plant up more free fresh food around town. If you would like us to come and talk to your group, please get in touch on edible.llambed@outlook.com. Julia Lim * Tomatillos aren't ready to eat until their papery sacs have dried out and the ripe fruit is exposed. They should be cooked.

OPEN AFTERNOON 12pm—5pm A chance to visit our off -grid smallholding in Ceredigion. We are a small family run business raising alpacas for their fibre, producing luxury hypoallergenic yarn, knitted and woven items. We hold craft workshops and offer volunteering opportunities. Come and visit our eco, ethical, low -impact business. We will have a great mix of crafts, traders and complimentary therapists.

At this time of year we’re not so busy in our gardens and it’s good to take time for a walk in the fields and woodlands nearby. You’ll have seen many interesting toadstools and mushrooms which perhaps you’d like to know more about. Our speaker on 17 October is Bruce Langridge from the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Bruce’s special interest is fungi, so he’ll be telling us what to look for when identifying mushrooms and conserving and developing their habitat. On the organic farm at the National Botanic Garden there are several places where you can see more fungi, some unique to this site and Bruce will explain how these areas are protected and the flora encouraged. For further information look at botanicgarden.wales/science Join us on 17 October at 7.30pm for “Phenomenal & Fascinating Fungi”. Autumn is here but our members still have some surplus plants, grab an end-of-season bargain at our plant stall. Proceeds go towards club funds. Cothi Gardeners meet at Coronation Hall, Pumsaint, third Wednesday every month. Annual membership including refreshments: £14; Guests and visitors welcome, £3. www.cothigardeners.com We’re on Facebook too, or phone Julian on 01558 685119. Donna Worrall 6

‘Electromagnetic Youth’ Walking my dogs in the park one winter evening, I was surprised by a myriad, bouncing lights, traversing the perimeter of the field. On closer inspection I realised that they were the glows from many mobile phone screens as youngsters wandered, immersed in a virtual world, not speaking, not aware, just mesmerised. Electromagnetic radiation (EM, EMF) comprises invisible electric and magnetic fields varying simultaneously. Some EM is natural eg. visible light, and Schumann Resonance created by the action of lightning in the atmosphere. Both are essential for life. (1) Man-made EM is artificial and antagonistic to life – eg. mobile phone technology, wi-fi, ‘smart’ meters, tablets, cordless phones and baby monitors. Today’s youngsters have never experienced a natural environment free from artificial electromagnetic radiation and, indeed, since the 1990s the quantity of ubiquitous ‘electrosmog’ has increased by a factor of 10 to the power of 18; ie. a 1000,000,000,000,000,000-fold increase. (2) Human beings, indeed most living species, function electrically – their cells communicate using charged particles (ions) and the electrical activity of muscles, heart and brain can be recorded (eg. ECG, EEG). Evolution is a very long process, and the speed of environmental change has outstripped our human capacity to adapt. No wonder then, that more and more people experience ‘interference’ from their modern, wireless gadgets. At one extreme, is the well-known tragedy of Jenny Fry, an otherwise healthy, 15 year old, who took her own life rather than continue to suffer unbearable physical and mental ill-health symptoms caused by wi-fi radiation at her school. Other children’s education suffers in a less obvious way – inability to concentrate – due to what is, in effect, a classroom version of a microwave oven on low setting. Not enough EM to heat up the brain, but enough to penetrate a child’s thinner skull and damage the protective blood-brain barrier and affect thinking processes. (3)(4) Even those young people who feel quite at home welded to their smartphones, are sometimes experiencing a type of brain-chemical addiction with dopamine effects similar to those experienced by heroin addicts. A study in Sweden demonstrated that even when advised that the World Health Organisation classes EMF as a Type IIB Carcinogen (on a par with DDT, lead & mercury; (5)), teenagers replied that they would rather die from cancer in their 40’s than part with their phones.(2) Unfortunately, the medical profession has not yet been educated on the topic, so ‘Electrosensitive’ people are currently unlikely to be understood, and their symptoms of headaches, tinnitus, brainfog, ear pressure and pain, heart

palpitations, anxiety, nosebleeds, blistering skin, and depression are likely to be dismissed and remain inappropriately treated. Indeed, the best way to avoid harm from our gadgets is to follow some simple rules:Never put a mobile phone to your head (risk of brain & ear cancer) Use hands-free earphones with airtubes (or) use speakerphone on a table (6) Keep phones and tablets a minimum of 40cm away from the body, even when on standby Never carry a phone in your pocket (sperm damage risk) Never carry a phone in your bra or breast pocket (breast cancer risk) Have your computer cabled (not wi-fi connected) Have a corded landline telephone (not cordless) Avoid using wireless baby monitors Refuse to have a ‘smart’ meter installed – (it emits up to 800x more microwave radiation than a mobile phone, up to 14,000 times a day, and bills can be up to 50% higher) (7) Approximately 5% of the human population has symptoms of electrosensitivity. The Swedish government funds shielding for affected individuals. Other species are also affected by radiofrequency EMF – plants, trees, animals and insects, problems in migratory animals like birds and bees, birth defects in calves, and fertility problems in herds. All backed by hundreds of freely available, published scientific studies. (8) It is not so long ago that the tobacco and asbestos industries assured us that their products were safe. Safety always lags Technological advances. We start with denial, before moving to realisation and taking action ...”there isn’t a problem, there isn’t a problem, there’re a few mad people that say there’s a problem, there is a very small problem, there’s a problem but it’s under control, OMG WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!” Fortunately, technology also allows us to investigate for ourselves so that we can arm ourselves with facts and take appropriate action to safeguard ourselves and our young people. Janet Menage (Dr) (1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFR5EtO_zdM ‘Resonance Beings of Frequency’ (2) ‘Making Waves’, International Electrosensitivity Conference, West Sussex, England, May 2018 (3) ICNIRP safety standards used by UK government and HPS voted OBSOLETE by European Parliament, 506 votes to 22. EMF harms at levels which do not heat tissue. (4) Council of Europe Report - call for IMMEDIATE reduction in exposure to EMFs by children. 6th May 2011 (5) World Health Organisation, 31st May 2011 (6) https://beneficialenvironments.co.uk/product/airtube-headsets/ (7) Daniel Hirsch, Senior Nuclear Policy Lecturer at UCSC, California (8) www.es-uk.info; http://www.bioinitiative.org/

What is EMMETT Technique? A unique complementary therapy to relax the body and the mind Tony, Judith & Annie invite you to come along to our EMMETT Taster Day Llanfair Clydogau Village Hall Wednesday 17 October any time between 2pm & 6.30pm Enjoy tea/coffee & cake; experience a taster treatment, find out about our treatments & training opportunities All proceeds will go to Llanfair Clydogau Village Hall Improvements Fund The EMMETT Technique is a unique body therapy created by Ross Emmett – An exceptional practitioner based in Queensland, Australia. EMMETT practitioners are mostly viewed as “fixers” of discomfort and “restorers” of movement and balance in both people and animals. Clients come for complementary therapy for a number of reasons and the use of this therapy is guided by the specific needs of the individual client at that particular time, through assessment, observation and discussion. EMMETT technique uses the application of light pressure at specific points on the body and in sequences that enable muscle groups to gently release and relax. The relaxing nature of the technique results in people reporting typical responses such as: Improved comfort and ease within the area treated More restful sleep Enhanced mood A sense of lightness within their body Treatments are usually carried out with the client wearing light, comfortable clothing. Often treatments take a relatively short amount of time with the practitioner monitoring how much each person can beneficially accept in the session. It is a results-based system rather than a time-based treatment. Some clients benefit best by a few procedures and the practitioner will stop when a positive difference has been made. Animals can be treated wherever they are comfortable eg: in a field or in the home. The EMMETT Technique DOES NOT claim to treat illnesses, diseases, syndromes or medical conditions. Each person is unique and has their own individual responses. It does not intend to replace or substitute any medical advice or treatment. It is recommended that you consult your General Practitioner about any health concerns. For more information about the EMMETT Technique in the UK & Ireland please visit www.emmett-uk.com The website has details of how EMMETT Technique helps people and also animals. ∞∞∞ I am a Reflexologist and an EMMETT Practitioner for people and horses. COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND

Autumn 2018 works at Long Wood Community Woodland Now that the autumn season is approaching, it's time for us to start work in the woods again. Work will begin on the 24th of September 2018 to continue with the remedial works recommended to us by the tree safety survey that was undertaken following last year’s wind-blow event. This work will be undertaken by a local contractor from Ceredigion using smaller machinery. This work will be focussed on the area of spruce directly above the Visitors' Centre and will continue for approximately two weeks. Also beginning in October will be the creation of our new pond system, with help from the Big Lottery Awards for All fund, Long Wood are looking forward to installing a series of ponds and scrapes, including bird hides, in order to create a wetland habitat area. This work may take up to the end of October depending on the weather and ground conditions. Both works will involve small machinery and temporary path closures. Paths will be reopened at the end of each day and will be fully open all weekend as usual. The rest of the woodlands and path systems will remain open as usual. Please adhere to any, and all path closure notices which are in place for public safety. Ben Allen www.longwood-lampeter.org.uk; 01570 493355, info@longwood-lampeter.org.uk

BioInnovation Wales Postgraduate Training in Agri-Food and Biotech Thanks to a generous grant from the European Social Fund, we have a great new postgraduate training opportunity for people living or working in West Wales & the Valleys. From January 2019, we will be offering heavily subsidised modules in topics relating to the food supply chain and biotechnology. You can choose to do just one module or work up to a range of qualifications, as below:

should be able to access the material without any trouble. Some modules, where there is a practical component, will be delivered through a blend of workshops and online material in which case you would need to attend approximately 3-5 days of workshops for the module. If you would struggle with this due to child care or travel costs we may be able to help with that too. Modules last for 14 weeks and, in our experience, you need to study for an average of 10-15 hours per week. However, the relative flexibility of the delivery styles means that our learners are able to fit their study around work and family. Three of our first four modules will be entirely online: Sustainable Supply Systems, Waste Resource Management, and Future Packaging while Membrane Filtration Technologies will be blended. Future themes will include agri-environment, food production & processing, nutrition & health and more. In fact, since we are consulting with and responding to the training needs of businesses and organisations in Wales, we’d be happy to hear from you if you identify any high-level training needs within the agri-food and biotech arena. To qualify for the programme, you will need: a degree in an appropriate subject or at least 2 years’ relevant experience to live or work in West Wales & the Valleys

The 20-credit modules will cost only £165 each, meaning an entire Bioinnovation MSc would cost just £1,155 instead of the usual £7k or so. Bargain! This funding will last for 5 years but, due to Brexit, is unlikely to be repeated, so make hay while the sun shines (you might even learn how to get added value from your hay too!). The programme will be delivered by Aberystwyth University in partnership with Swansea University but, since most modules will be entirely online, you won’t need to travel further than the nearest computer with internet access – one bonus of living in the digital era! But, I hear you cry, what about the poor broadband in much of rural west Wales? Well, if you can stream YouTube videos you

Jottings

The digital age has given us the ability to carry out research in, and communicate from, remote areas. Now, due to the advent of mobile platforms (phones, tablets and laptops), we can carry dictionaries, encyclopaedias and field guides in our pockets. We can even carry around our favourite reading and music all on a gadget the size of an A5 notebook. Digital cameras allow us to take multiple pictures of subjects without having to thread film on sprockets (invaluable when the weather is foul). I think the most exciting aspect of the digital era is that we can now follow our migrant birds and other fauna in real time. The information gained should be able to help researchers find out where or why problems arise, although there are of course downsides such as mobile signals dropping out or not being available. The unreliability of some of the on-line information and the explosion of social media platforms facilitating cyber bullying and racism also give rise to concern. The continuing evolution of digital technology may also give us pause: more of the workforce being replaced by robots for example. However, both human labour and digital technology will be needed to clean up our distressed environment. David Price 11

The longest, loudest fart anyone had ever heard or shall ever hear again. Amen. Silence then giggling and sniggering small bodies shaking and swaying as an incredible stink wafted through the hall rose up and entered Mr Stern’s nose. ‘Quiet,’ he spat, ‘the joke’s over.’ The laughter stopped until Lucy caught Ian’s eye let out a whinnying snicker set us all off again. by Polly Phemus A zillion years lizards ruled this place Their feathered friends are with us still; They rise above our ruinous tides And choke upon the works of man, Who never looks past all his nights Never dares that bitter pill, to realise There's nowhere else, for all his might, That he can reach in time and space. Some hope that like the birds we will yet Find our wings and forget our fears; But ever, when reaching for the stars, Then further away we find they get.

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group - Lampeter & District - ‘The Digital Era’ from the wards. Amazing to think that in this ’digital era’ we now we have incredibly sophisticated scanners; MRI’s, CAT’s, Radio-isotope scanners and whatever they are now developing. How life in hospitals has changed. They can see and examine every bit, of the tiniest bit, of our bodies. MRI scanners are used in the diagnoses of many of the things wrong with us including Multiple Sclerosis. By looking at our brains and spinal cords it is possible to identify not only the presence of MS but also to identify which type of MS we’ve got depending on how many little white dots we’ve got and where they are situated. We ourselves have computer ‘chips’ in our laptops, tablets, Smartphones, cameras, as well as on trainers for measuring marathon times. Even fishing reels can have anti-tangling and braking chips. Smartphones are a real ‘digital revolution’ in their own right. With them we can do almost anything. WE CAN CAPTURE MEMORIES. Come and join us on the first Monday of the month from 1.303.30, in the back room of The Mustard Seed, Lampeter. We welcome anybody with MS, carers, and anybody wanting to know more, from wherever you are. You are also welcome at our Aberystwyth group which meets in the new Tesco’s community room 12-2.pm on the 1st FRIDAY of the month. CROESO I BAWB/ WELCOME TO ALL. Oh! What fun it can be playing around with a computer! BUT On the internet I searched, found, and copied, a wonderful cartoon drawing of a turnip…but can I get it to move into this article aaagh! Turnip you ask? Well with turnips in the garden we have to know what to do with them so I ‘Googled’ them as we do with so many things these days. Great! Turnips, – how to grow them, how to cook them, how to make almost anything with them but then the computer stopped working!! At this point I gave up and found some gardening books, cookery books and my very old WI jam-making book. Oh! The wonder of a book. Computers are great, I love them really. When I left school I trained to be a biochemist at a hospital in Oxford. It was around the time that computers were being developed. Our hospital started putting computers in the various departments, ours being one. The laboratory was divided in two and put a large glass partition across to protect the huge, new, computer which would live in its own new area, protected from temperature changes, dust etc. This enormous construction was my first experience of what a computer looked like. It then took control of all the other machines that tested the samples sent to us

don’t see. Software companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo boast some of the largest data centres in the world. The rise in dominance of mobile operating systems, along with the millions of applications built on top of those platforms, has spawned the mobile communication age. What can we do about all this? There’s no easy answer. Mobile technology has huge advantages, including greater communications and access for disadvantaged people and communities around the world. But until we recognise and pay the real price of those downloaded photos, videos and games, for example, how will we learn to self-regulate? The sinister side is, of course, that many corporates want us to become addicted, see more ads and buy more stuff. This is the face of globalisation in the ‘modern’ world and we ignore the ramifications at our peril. Angie Polkey

Meditation – the simple and joyful approach of Thich Nhat Hanh Thich Nhat Hanh, who was born in Vietnam, is a Zen master who is revered throughout the world for his teachings and writings on mindfulness and peace. His distress at the suffering he witnessed during the Vietnam War led him to a lifelong commitment to promote peace in the world, and an end to war. In 1966 he travelled to US and Europe to make the case for peace and to call for an end to hostilities in Vietnam. He met Martin Luther King who subsequently called him “an apostle of peace and non violence”. As a result of his peace activism he was exiled from his country for many years, but this also resulted in him being a pioneer in bringing Buddhism and mindfulness practice to the West. He has a thriving community of over 600 monks and nuns around the world, as well as over 1000 local mindfulness practice groups known as sanghas. His key teaching is that through mindfulness we can learn to live happily in the present moment, and that this is the only way to truly develop peace, both in oneself and in the world. Here are some quotes of his teaching: There is no way to happiness – happiness is the way. We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realise.

People have a hard time letting go of their suffering. Out of a fear of the unknown, they prefer suffering that is familiar. People deal too much with the negative, with what is wrong. Why not try to see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom? His teaching is very simple and loving, gentle and encouraging and hopeful. Many people of different faiths and none have found his words, and the practice of mindfulness, have brought them calm and joy. He is now 91 and has had a stroke so is no longer teaching, but his teachings are freely available as You Tube videos on the website tnhaudio.org. He has also published many books, which are very readable and practical. On Sat 17 Nov at Cellan Village Hall there will be a meditation day based on Thich Nhat Hanh’s mindfulness practice. It will be led by Dave Corbett from Bishops Castle, who has been a follower of TNH for over 20 years and established one of the sanghas in Llanidloes. The day is open to anyone who is interested in meditation, and who would like to share a few hours of peace together. Llewod Llambed - Lampeter Lionesses WE ARE UP AND RUNNING! After two well attended and successful “Back to Netball” sessions, weekly training started at the end of April at the Leisure Centre in Lampeter, every Thursday evening 7.30-8.30pm. With the emphasis on fun and taking part, sessions are regularly attended by 1420 women of all ages, ability and experience. The Lionesses have been busy! During August we invited Bont Blades; a Ceredigion league team, to join the training sessions in Lampeter. The hour was filled with short, insightful skills training and finished with relaxed games with teams a mix of Blades and Lioness players, all of which, although competitive, were played in generous spirit, and with encouragement to all. The final evening of joint training was given over to a competitive, friendly match between the two sides. Bont Blades took the lead quickly in the first quarter which finished with them several goals ahead. The Lionesses (resplendent in their emerald green kits) worked hard to keep in contention and although still behind at the end of the second quarter had shortened the gap. The start of the third quarter Lampeter came out stronger, encouraged by the gains in the

previous half, the Lionesses clawed their way ahead. Momentum with them, the end of the match saw Lampeter win with the score at 23- 21! Llewod Llambed wish to thank Bont Blades for their support, assistance, encouragement and committing to travelling from all over Ceredigion to Lampeter each week during the summer. Diolch and pob lwc for the upcoming season. Encouraged by the links forged with Bont Blades, The Lionesses will be playing home and away friendlies against Aeron Netball during September as a prelude for joining the league. The club was also represented in the Lampeter Carnival this year. The theme being “When I grow up I want to be…” the Lionesses chose to represent “Happy, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise” with team members children dressed up as University graduates, in sports kits, fur coats and jewellery carrying bags of money, and smiley t-shirts all waving enthusiastically at the gathered crowds as they paraded with the float through Lampeter town. All the hard work of the team was rewarded by a third place in the float competition and a first for one of the youngest participants Elin for her fancy dress. Well done team! 17

Now the summer is over, the club is focused on completing the admin, applications and necessary training to be able to enter a team in the Ceredigion league! This is exciting stuff! Members of the club have promised sponsorship from Lampeter businesses and are in the process of applying for funding from the Community Chest Fund so as to be able to pay for equipment, officials and umpire training, and fees that joining the league requires. Thanks to the enthusiasm of club members, their willingness to volunteer in the day to day running of the club and the extra tasks that some have taken on in preparation for entering the league, looks like Lampeter WILL have a team in the Ceredigion Ladies Netball League this October! Keep up to date with Llewod’s progress in the Grapevine and for any other information including joining the club Please contact us on j_alex_fox@yahoo.co.uk or via the Facebook page llewodllambed.lampeterlionesses.3 Lynn Humphreys

UWTSD Celebrating our New Year! For us at the University, September is the start of our New Year and it is the cause of celebration as we welcome new and returning students to our beautiful campus and town. Our Welcome Weekend was on the 15 and 16 September, when our new students may have been found exploring the town and its facilities. As with every academic year, we will be hosting a number of events on the campus which are open to members of the local community. These range from research seminars to health and well-being days, exhibitions in the wonderful Roderic Bowen Library and Archives, to the fabulous Sunday Carvery or a Starbucks coffee in the 1822 cafÊ. The Roderic Bowen Library & Archives, RBLA, houses the Special Collections of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, the University's oldest printed books, manuscripts and archives and is one of the principal resources for academic research in Wales. Acquired over the last 200 years, largely by bequest and donation, the Special Collections include over 35,000 printed works, 8 medieval manuscripts, around 100 post medieval manuscripts. Material from the Archives includes the early student registers and photographs from the mid nineteenth century onwards. If you would like to know more about this wonderful resource, have a look on our website http://www.uwtsd.ac.uk/rbla/ If you are interested in coming along to the research seminars we hold throughout the year, then please keep an eye on the website for information or have a look in your monthly Grapevine. The seminars haven’t been scheduled yet but when they are, all details will easily be found at http://www.uwtsd.ac.uk/humanities-performingarts/events/ Our Sunday Carvery is known around the community for being a well-priced, lovely plate of food for all the family, and 1822 is known too as a friendly place to stop for a coffee and a quick bite. Tir Coed – AnTir Project Elusen yw Tir Coed sy’n cysylltu pobl leol â choedwigoedd lleol trwy wirfoddoli, hyfforddi a chynnig gweithgareddau unigryw. Ar hyn o bryd mae Tir Coed yn gweithredu Prosiect LEAF (Learning to Enable Achievement and Fulfilment) sy’n creu cyfleoedd i bobl gael mynediad i weithgareddau lles, cyrsiau hyfforddiant sgiliau’r goedlan, cyrsiau dwys mewn gweithgareddau arbenigol am wythnos, lleoliadau gwaith a chefnogaeth i brosiectau newydd. Fel rhan o brosiect Dysgu am Goed (partneriaeth rhwng Tir Coed a Chymdeithas Coedwigoedd Brenhinol) mae perchnogion a rheolwyr coedwigoedd lleol yn helpu cefnogi ymweliadau addysgol i blant ysgolion cynradd. Mae Tir Coed bob amser yn chwilio am ffyrdd gwahanol i arallgyfeirio ei strwythur er mwyn ymestyn effaith yr elusen. Fel rhan o brosiect AnTir (Land Enterprise) rydym yn

Mae garddwriaeth yn dod yn fwy arwyddocaol wrth i bobl chwilio am fwyd o ansawdd gwell am bris teg. Hefyd, mae tyfu bwyd eich hunain yn dod â nifer o fanteision iechyd, mae’n amrywio eich diet, yn hybu ffitrwydd a’ch lles. Mae’n gyfle gwych i feithrin sgiliau newydd ac i fod yn greadigol yn eich gardd gefn. Dros y misoedd diwethaf fel hyfforddai Tir Coed AnTir, rydw i wedi bod yn cynnal ymgynghoriad i weld a fyddai diddordeb gan bobl i fynychu hyfforddiant garddwriaeth petai’r elusen yn ei gynnig? Os fyddai elfen achrediad yn dod gyda hyn (trwy Agored Cymru) a fyddai pobl yn awyddus? Hyd yn hyn, mae’r ymateb wedi bod yn gadarnhaol iawn:

Tir Coed is a charity that engages people with the local woodlands through volunteering, training and bespoke activities. Tir Coed is currently in the process of delivering the LEAF Project (Learning to Enable Achievement and Fulfilment) that is creating opportunities for people to access bespoke well-being activities, woodland skills training courses, week-long intensive training in sector specific activities, mentoring, work placements and support for fledgling woodland enterprises. As part of Dysgu am Goed (a partnership project between Tir Coed and the Royal Forestry Society) local woodland owners and managers are helping to support educational visits for primary school children. Tir Coed is always looking at different ways to diversify its model and widen the impact of the charity. As part of the AnTir (Land Enterprise) project we are investigating the possibility of expanding into Horticulture and offering food growing courses with accreditation. Horticulture is becoming increasingly significant as people are searching for better quality food at a fair price. Not only that but growing your own food has many potential health benefits; it varies your diet, promotes exercise and increases your well being. It is also a great chance to develop new skills and be creative in your own back garden. Over the last few months as Tir Coed’s AnTir Intern I have been conducting a consultation to determine whether people would be interested in a horticulture course if the charity was to provide it? Going further from that, if an element of accreditation was offered (via Agored Cymru) would people want that as an option? So far the results from those that have taken part have been very positive:

Byddai 80.9% eisiau cymryd rhan mewn cyrsiau tyfu bwyd

80.9% of those asked would want to be part of a food growing course

Byddai 60% yn hoffi cydnabyddiaeth achrediad

60% would like a level of accreditation

ymchwilio i’r posibilrwydd o ehangu i faes garddwriaeth a chynnig cyrsiau tyfu bwyd gydag achrediad.

Beth y’ch chi’n feddwl? Os hoffech chi helpu ein hymgynghoriad, gallwch wneid hyn drwy gwblhau holiadur. Defnyddiwch y linc isod:

Digging the Dirt Digging the Dirt - When do you speak out? Who listens if

you do? The multi-talented Multistory Theatre Company have been invited by Lampeter Quakers to bring their play Digging the Dirt to Victoria Hall on Saturday 20 October at 7.30 pm. The play interweaves two stories: in a time past a woman and a man dig on a hill, hoping to encourage others to join them in an experiment in communal living; in present time a woman leaves her husband on the doorstep of her home as she is taken into custody to face charges of leaking state secrets. In both instances, committed individuals challenge the powers-that-be and face the consequences. The story of the diggers on the hill is inspired by the history of the 17th century Diggers who occupied and cultivated common land for a year before being swept away by the military - though not before other communities had followed suit. The story of the present-day whistle-blower is inspired by events in 2003 when a member of staff at GCHQ leaked a document in the hope of stopping the invasion of Iraq. Her action didn’t halt the slide to war but ultimately her prosecution was dropped to save the government from having to reveal further classified information.

It promises to be an engaging and absorbing evening for old and young, and will raise plenty of questions that Multistory are happy to discuss over refreshments after the performance. Those who have seen the play have said: “The play left us all with much food for thought and having had a great hour of entertainment. It provoked a lot of discussion.” “Brilliant - thought-provoking - clever staging and use of music/movement." We have all seen media coverage of people and movements for change, and how they may be lauded, demonised, subverted or co-opted. Come along on Saturday 20 October to be entertained and challenged by what may happen when you act to change the world! Julia Lim

Celtic Christianity XLII

Elmo's Delights

St Eleri / Elerius Abbot. Reposed 670. Remembered 13th June and 3rd November. St Eleri built two monasteries at Gwytherin in Conwy, one for men one for women. His mother, Theona, became abbess of the women and after her St Winifred followed her in office. The place was an ancient holy place with very old yews and standing stones still upright. One of these stones was reused and inscribed by a Christian family of the fifth or sixth century. The church at Gwytherin founded by St Eleri has been sold into private hands. A Note About Greek Names The Greek empire was the first European Union and it spanned around the Mediterranean for 1700 years from Alexander the Great in 300 BC to the fall of the last stronghold, the third capital city, Byzantium, in 1452. Greek was the language of the Empire all over, until the rise of Latin only in the west. As a consequence the Greek naming system was widespread across Europe including Wales for many hundreds of years. Greek has three genders (the same as English): male, female and neuter (he, she and it). Female names ended in i, e, a: all the same sound slightly mutated by time and geography. Male names ended in os, us, is, ous (again, all the same root sound modified over the years and miles). This is still somewhere in modern naming as Mark can be Marcus, Luke can be Lucas, Matthew can be Matthias. We still have a lot of female names that end in a vowel: Barbara, Celia, Deborah, Eleni, Hilary, Nonna, Paula, Roberta, Sylvia and so on. As in todays times, names were often shortened to diminutives: Haralambous to Harry and Elerius to Eleri. This is why for this saint that Eleri looks like a girls name, but is not. Another example of a male name losing the genitive ending is the male name Hilarius (a happy man: the same root as hilarious) that becomes Hilary. They then have to suffer a lot of ribbing. PAUSE FOR HOPE The cross-denominational church service for Cancer returns to Lampeter It has been almost a year since the first ever ecumenical church service for Cancer was brought to Wales and with such a positive reception and feedback, the service is returning again this year Sunday 21 October 2:30pm St Peter’s Church, Lampeter The service, which will be bilingual, promises to be uplifting, as well as providing hope and comfort, especially when most of us will have been affected in some way by Cancer - whether as a patient, carer, support worker, family or friend. The impact and scale that it has in our society and how lonely a place it can be shouldn’t be underestimated, especially when the diagnosis is fresh in the mind and the journey ahead is uncertain. With that in mind and to broaden its impact and inclusiveness, the service has great support from the local churches in Lampeter as well as Ysgol Bro Pedr, an important part of the community and the next generation. After the service there will be tea/coffee and cake, and the opportunity to talk to representatives from local groups and cancer charities to answer any of your questions about treatment, fears, support or where to find more information. The Pause for Hope charity was set up with in 1999 and has since grown to give annual services across the country to help bring together those affected by all forms of cancer, their loved ones and carers and remember dear ones lost to cancer. For more information on the Pause for Hope charity please visit www.pauseforhope.org.uk Members of all faiths or none are welcome. Steven Holmes For more information about the service in Lampeter please email Steven on stevenholmes0@gmail.com 32

Permaculture beyond the garden: Sustainable retrofitting of older houses

Permaculture can be perceived as only concerned with growing food, but you can also apply permaculture design, its principles and ethics to any aspect of your life. A first step in applying permaculture design outside the garden is to decide where you want to make a big difference to your life, such as your well-being or finances, within a sustainable framework. Retrofitting your house can improve all these areas, exemplifying the permaculture approach of achieving multiple yields. In West Wales, unless you are fortunate enough to already live in a very energy efficient house, you’ll quite likely be in a home that costs more to heat than you’d like (with associated higher carbon emissions and contribution to climate change), has at least one or two slightly damp corners and is a bit draughty. If you develop a whole house retrofit plan you can address these issues with a series of measures designed to improve the energy efficiency, sustainability and comfort of your home. Done thoughtfully and thoroughly, a retrofit can reduce your energy bills and household maintenance costs as well as improving your comfort and quality of life. If you have a well-designed plan you’ll be able to identify which retrofit elements need to happen first and which

will give you the greatest benefits, either tangibly in terms of payback period (“carbon payback” – the time it takes to save the carbon cost of whatever improvements that you make, is often similar to financial payback) or intangibly as improved comfort levels. A good plan will help avoid piecemeal works causing extra problems or compromising future possibilities for further improvements. For example, interior insulation of older houses will reduce heating bills, but can worsen damp problems in some situations; external insulation can be more expensive, but can also address damp issues if properly specified. You will also be able to plan and cost the work required to help make it affordable and minimise the disruption that renovation can cause. Work can be staged over a period of years and it may be that you choose not to do all the actions in the plan, but you’ll have a good idea of where you are and what you’ve achieved at any point by referring to your plan. So, before you get stuck in, get a plan - either do it yourself or obtain advice from someone with appropriate skills, then get stuck in! Andy Polkey
