It’s time to ‘Focus on Youth’ ... A chance to highlight and positively reinforce what young people represent; a time to consider what future is on offer and time to reflect on how we react. Having recently attended the Malverns Classic Mountain Bike Festival, I was constantly reminded of this theme whilst watching hundreds of young people, from tiny tots to teens, enjoying riding their bikes; whether competing or just speeding across the campsite and main arena, the sheer delight and

freedom created a real buzz of excitement that was both enchanting and fascinating to witness. If this happened to be a snapshot of things to come, I’m all for it. This youthful energy and spirit could translate well into future situations. Focusing on cycling as a future mode of transport and an activity with undoubted health benefits, will see this group of youngsters well ahead of the game I’m sure. They all participated at their own

To have a few multinational corporations effectively controlling our food supply is not a comfortable prospect for any of us. In the EU seeds have to be certified under the ESCAA agreement in order to allow them to be sold under EU legislation. If a seed does not appear on these lists it is illegal to sell it. There are good reasons for this, avoiding spread of plant diseases etc., but like a lot of well intentioned legislation it has a lot of adverse effects and in this case the choice of seeds available commercially has become very limited. Lampeter Seed Library / Banc Hadau Llambed is a local initiative to protect and maintain the diversity in locally grown seeds to ensure seed security for our future generations. Lets make sure they have available the widest choice of foods needed to maintain good health and pleasure from food. We aren't breaking any laws or breaching any patents, as the service is entirely free. We can all do our bit by growing and saving seed from open pollinated seeds. Come and chat to us at the People’s Market, join our seed library and help save seeds for food security for the future.

The Future of Food What does the future hold for our food and how can we ensure we have a safe and plentiful supply? Many factors affect our food supply including economics, politics, consumer demand, climate and climate change to name but a few. One thing for certain the availability of a reliable, diverse and safe future food supply should not be taken for granted. An interesting and disturbing figure that has recently been released shows that in 30 years the amount of fruit and vegetables consumed in the UK that is actually grown in the UK has dropped from 83% to 55% and that figure is still falling. Currently a lot of this comes from the EU with no tariffs attached to it but as we are all too aware this could change. An example of the possible political and economic affects on our food supply.

However, one of the biggest threats to our food supply is the threat to our seeds. In a previous article we have already discussed the loss of diversity in the seeds that are available to us, but this is not the only threat. Large multinational companies are already patenting seeds which effectively means they own the rights to the genetic material in these seeds and consequently it is illegal for us to save seeds from these plants. Does this mean that in the For more information: Lampeter future we will always have to buy new seeds in order to banchadaullambed@outlook.com grow our food? This is a frightening spectre.

Focus on Youth: Dance Jottings

A number of people have commented not only on the lack of bird song this spring but also on the non return of their swallows or pied flycatchers and even, at the end of May, the dearth of swifts. Migration is a significant challenge for all animals but especially birds and there are increasing environmental factors affecting their migration behaviour. These include climate change, the effects of intensive agriculture, increasing urban sprawl, degradation of habitat and the effects of radio telemetry used for monitoring remote infrastructure and for our use of mobile communication. Surprisingly, there have been a number of Cuckoo sightings in the Cwm Brefi area so it is not all bad news. It would appear that migrants encountered severe weather on their journey north this spring and some birds perished over the Alps and Pyrenees. It is not only our land birds that are affected; many of our sea birds are also under threat. The reasons for this are unclear; as well as climate change they have to contend with overfishing and of course the alarming amount of plastic particles that have made the news. The infrastructure used for monitoring remote installations could also be playing a part in the distribution of our fish stocks. David Price

Every Thursday

Lampeter Food Project 4-6pm Victoria Hall Reducing waste & redistributing ‘surplus’ food to anyone who wants it.

As soon as we can toddle, we can dance. You’ve seen fab videos of little tots stomping their feet and shaking their stuff, without concern to what others may think. Do you remember spinning on the school field, eyes on the blue sky above you until you tumbled, giggling onto the grass? With my belly dance company, I offered dance to all ages and abilities. I’ve taught Brownies, Guides, Young Carers and Youth Groups, as well as WI groups, birthday parties and hen parties and I stick to the adage I believe in; if you don’t move it, you’ll lose it. School Curricula are forced to pack in academic subjects, pushing art, dance and sport aside. I’ve never believed in academic achievement above all else; there has to be a balance or schools will churn out robots with good memories, rather than young, well balanced adults, able to think and create for themselves.

You heard the music, felt your foot tapping but didn’t get up. When did you last dance the dance you wanted to? When did you spin, stomp, laugh and fall over? Dancing together, following each other’s movements, is proven to be good for our well-being so why not join a dance class today? CAN YOU HELP OUT? With Universal Credit on the horizon in Ceredigion, Banc Bwyd Llanbed is preparing for a rise in need for the food bank, and are looking for some more volunteers to join our team. Although this is Lampeter churches’ initiative, you don’t need to be a member of a church to join us, and we warmly welcome all who are willing to help. Ideally, you need to be able to offer some time on a regular planned basis. The more of us there are, the less time we each need to give. It is rewarding work, and we give training and support to everyone who joins us. It could involve joining the rota to prepare and give out food parcels, holding the food bank phone to take referrals, or helping to deal with food donations, whichever fits the time you have available. If you think you could help, please call us Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm, 07582 905743 or leave a message with your number.

Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed - let's talk food!

Eight of us had a great time in the sunshine on Bank Holiday Monday, planting up the Co-op bed and making signs for it. The bed has already lived up to its propaganda gardening potential, as each time we have been working on it, someone has stopped to chat and ask questions. While planting up, we had two people from North Wales and Ammanford who said they'd take the idea back home, a young mum who offered to help with the watering after the school run (thank you!), and her daughter who is looking forward to the strawberries fruiting and was interested that blackcurrants will make a cordial like Ribena. We have had offers of further plants, tips on growing (did you know sheep's poo is good for strawberries?) and a chance to explain what in the bed is edible (such as young beetroot leaves and stalks in salad). As you can see from the pictures, the bed is now filled with plants: strawberries, parsley, salad burnet, chives and garlic chives, sage, thyme, beetroot, chard, lettuce, kale, kalettes, tomatoes and tomatilloes, French beans, peas and few more. nothing is ready to pick as yet but we will put up signs for each plant when it is ready to be picked and cooked or eaten. Are there ways we can do more to involve children and young people in what we're doing around town? We're hoping to talk with some of the local schools about this before the summer holidays start. We'll soon have our own email and Facebook page but if you want to get in touch in the meantime, contact us at transitionllambed@gmail.com or you can find us on Saturdays at 10am working on the Co-op bed. St Cadwaladr / Caedwalla / Cadwallader / Cadwallador Abbot. King Of The Welsh. Reposed 664. Remembered 12th November. He became king about 634, and was the last Welsh king to have sovereignty over all Britain. In the Welsh Triads, he is said to be one of the blessed "Three Golden-banded of the Island of Britain", i.e. one of the three Kings who wore the golden bands that were insignia of supreme temporal power, and were worn around the neck, the arms and the knees. He protected fugitive Christians when they were dispossessed by the pagans. He figures in Mediaeval Welsh poetry, and is regarded as an embodiment of other-worldliness, compassion and humility. Such faith and obedience, in co-operation with Gods grace, can produce a saint even in faithless and pagan times. The history of Wales in the Mediaeval "Chronicles of the Princes" begins with the death of St Cadwaladr: "680 was the year of Christ when there was a great mortality throughout all the island of Britain... And in that year, Cadwaladr the Blessed, son of Cadwallon ap Cadvan, king of the Britons, died on the twelfth day of May, as Myrddin had before that prophesied to Gwrtheyrn Gwrthenau. And from that time forth the Britons lost the crown of the kingdom, and the Saxons gained it". (Red Book of Hergest, Mostyn MS 116. 142a) St Cadwaladr has special significance for this age. It is easy to become disheartened as we see the powers of evil flourishing; virtue despised and faith receding. But the times of St Cadwaladr were worse and he kept faithful to his vision and to his convictions in Christ whatever the difficulties, trials and dangers that face us. He is buried in the church of Llangedwaladr in south west Anglesey. There was a royal monastery nearby at Aberffraw where the Royals of Gwynedd were buried. Troparion Of St Cadwaladr All earthly honour and power you regarded as nought, and did not set your heart on the wealth of this world. You gave your possessions to the destitute and grief-stricken and your obedience to Christ made you a consoler of the pitiful and a comfort to the sick. Therefore you inherited the heavenly Kingdom, and are called 'Blessed', O Cadwaladr, righteous king. Pray before Christ our God for the Orthodox faith to flourish in our land, and for our souls' salvation. Harry Harrison

We never see the smiles once the lens-cap has been clipped back, the relaxing of shoulders, the slow turning to the day’s duties. And note the quarryscape behind them, the ordered stacks of slate, empresses, duchesses, broad ladies and their peers, destined to rule a million smoke-lagged streets. Look closer; in the fissures of the walls, of the hewn cliffs here the red campion has found space to root, and here the cranesbill. STOP PRESS Community Share Offer Now Open Your opportunity to own your own share of a new community wind turbine near Lampeter is now open. Grannell Community Energy (GCE) has announced the launch of its share offer to the public. This is the first community benefit project of this size in Ceredigion where a 500kW wind turbine has been built and shares offered to the public. GCE is a Community Benefit Society, meaning that anyone aged 16 and over can become a member and purchase shares to become a part-owner of the wind turbine. This is the first time the public are being given the opportunity to become members and buy shares in this innovative local community energy project in the Lampeter area. Grannell Community Energy is managing the project and to date funding for the project has come from short term loans from the Development Bank of Wales and an Ynni Lleol Grant. The loans will be refinanced using the money raised from the share offers. The Share Offer is part of a fundraising exercise by GCE to raise £700,000 in order to fund the initial build of the wind turbine. The community group is inviting people from the local area and beyond to buy shares and become members of the project. Grannell Community Energy want to give as many local people as possible the opportunity to buy shares for themselves and family members. Therefore, if you are living in Ceredigion, SA40 and SY23 you are invited to invest £100 or more. Outside these areas the minimum investment is £250. The annual return for members is projected to average 5% per year over the next 20 years. Members will receive interest on their shares after a few years and will also be asked to vote at the yearly AGM. Former Environment Minister, Dr Jane Davidson is a supporter of the project, she said: “I am delighted to support this new community wind initiative which demonstrates how local people can benefit doubly from such a low carbon project. Not only is it a low carbon energy source but at a time when savings are stagnant, shareholders will also earn far better rates as a return on their investment in community wind than through traditional investments.” She adds: “As a strong promoter of renewable energy, I want to congratulate those who have brought this to fruition and encourage renewable energy supporters and the local community to take the opportunity to invest in future generations by investing in Grannell Community Energy.”

The project will also generate a community fund which is expected to total approximately £5,000 a year (indexlinked), this fund will support local projects bringing social, economic and environmental benefits to Llanwnnen, Llanfihangel Ystrad, and Lampeter. Elly Foster, Chair of Grannell Community Energy, said: “It’s taken a lot of hard work to get this far and we are really excited to be able to offer shares in the wind turbine at last. The aim is to raise the funds within the next few months and hopefully if we reach the target to start building before Christmas 2018!” The wind turbine is an Enercon E48 500kW machine which will be installed at Ffrwd Farm near Cribyn, Lampeter. The turbine, which has a 50-metre tower and 44-metre rotor diameter, will generate approximately 1700 MWh of electricity per year - enough for about 450 homes. It is estimated that it will prevent about 600 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere a year. Lindsay Thomas, Treasurer of Grannell Community Energy said: “This is a unique opportunity for anyone with an interest in renewable energy and the environment, as well as the financial benefits of being involved, members who buy shares will know they are making a difference for generations to come, as well as supporting our local community.” For more information and to download a copy of the Share Offer Document please visit www.grannellcoop.org.uk Grannell Community Energy is supported by Sharenergy, based in Shrewsbury, who have facilitated over 30 community energy projects throughout the UK, and their extensive experience is being brought to bear on this project. Recent Reviews Lazarus Carpenter’s performance at Lampeter Folk Fri 20 April 2018 There are certain performers who need no introduction, and that’s exactly what Lazarus (The Sage of Swansea) got at Lampeter Folk on Friday 20 April! The usual comperes were inundated with tea/coffee requests from thirsty guests after an unusually hot sunny April day so were distracted. No problem for a seasoned performer like Lazarus, who arrived in good time despite sinkholes appearing in the road on his journey to Lampeter that day, then introduced himself and carried on with a lively set of folk songs and his own story readings. Lazarus hails from Yorkshire originally, and like a true Yorkshire man he tells it like it is, telling his enthralled audience they were so quiet you could hear “a cockroach fart!” That said, Lazarus appreciated the “old school” respect shown to musicians at Lampeter Folk, and rewarded listeners with an insight into his life and inspirations. Lazarus has made his home in the South Wales valleys, and told how the folk lore from the valleys, and specifically his own house, inspired him to write his magical tales and songs. "The Ballad of Penygraig" is the title of his book, set in 19th century South Wales, which tells the bloody story of what happened between a gamekeeper and iron worker after a promise was broken! The story is also told in a song of the same name which won Lazarus joint first place in the Doncaster Folk Festival songwriting competition, 2015. Earlier this year, Lazarus was awarded the title of Grand Prize Winner of the Holiday Book Competition with his latest fantasy novel about a dwarf ‘Crach Ffinnant – Rise of the Dragon’, (now available on Amazon) with the judges likening his work to that of Tolkien! As well as his own original repertoire, Lazarus also put his own spin on folk classics such as Richard Thompson’s Beeswing. Songs were intertwined with funny stories and jokes told with Lazarus’s dry and witty humour. A true performer and entertainer who really demonstrates his passion for music and storytelling. The night was broadcast live on Facebook and also enjoyed by regulars who couldn’t make it that evening. Lazarus runs an annual music and poetry festival called "Lazmatazz", the next one will be held at the Castle Hotel, Llandovery from 31 May to 2 June 2019! See https://www.facebook.com/lazzmatazz/ for details. Forthcoming dates for Lampeter Folk at Victoria Hall: Fri 20 July Fri 21 Sept - Guest evening with “Raker’s Moon” Fri 19 Oct Fri 16 Nov - Guest evening with “The Golden Geckos” Fri 21 Dec - Lampeter Folk Christmas Special

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group - Lampeter & District - ‘Focus on Youth’

Oh! how I could have done with a 'youth' this morning as I have been struggling with my computer. These days even a toddler might have known more than I appeared capable of! It told me to do things, but I didn't understand why, and even when I did what it said, it still didn't work! These feelings of lack of information and understanding, are what it is like when nerves don't work properly...feelings of utter helplessness, not knowing what is happening...why things are not working according to plan. Multiple Sclerosis can affect young people in several ways both directly and indirectly. One newly diagnosed girl said 'I'm too young to have MS'. She had experienced periods of her muscles feeling weak. She'd had problems with her eyes. She was training to be a dancer. This girl went on to be a teacher of dance and instead of feeling angry she saw it as a challenge. She said she takes things 'one day at a time' she 'lives in the present' and says that 'I can still be who I am, MS won't stop me'. (WebMD). Another person on the same website said that 'MS is the greatest blessing I never thought I wanted' but said that it was difficult telling people, especially family and friends. The MS Society in the publication Just Diagnosed says that even though telling people is scary it 'can help you feel less alone with your MS' She said she had become very aware of her general health and a physiotherapist had told her the following; FEED - Fruit, YOUR - Yoghurt, VERY - Veg, BEST - Berry Also not to sip water, even though there were accompanying worries about needing to go to the loo, but to have a good glass at a time. These people are directly affected but many young people are indirectly affected because other members of their family or friends have MS. At early ages they become aware of the problems and are indeed often young carers. 85% of the people diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis have a type called 'relapsing and remitting' which involves periods of attacks which happen for a period of time days, weeks, or possibly months - and then mostly or completely get better. In the early stages of relapsing remitting MS, your symptoms may go away completely between relapses - this is known as remission, But, sometimes there may be left over damage to the myelin, or even to the nerve itself. This damage can mean that

your symptoms don't always disappear completely'. This type of MS can affect children, teenagers, and young adults. According to the MS Trust childhood MS is not very common. They are working to provide more support and resources for under-18s. The MS Trust (www.mstrust.org.uk/families) and The MS Society (mssociety.org.uk) provide a lot of free publications for people affected by MS. There is the Ceredigion Young Carers Project based in Aberaeron to help young carers 8-18yrs. (01545 572637/ 01545572649). The local council has a duty to offer a Carer's Needs Assessment to carers of all ages. [Article 12 of the UNCRC (UNited Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) says children and young people have a right to have their voice heard and to be listened to in decisions that affect their lives] People of all ages are welcome to our Support Groups; Lampeter The Mustard Seed 1.30-3.30 the 1st Monday of the month and Aberystwyth Tescos Community Room 122pm the 1st Friday of the month. Review: The Carny Villains Saturday 26 May, Victoria Hall Wow! What a night, hosted by the community led Celf Llambed Arts. Not just one but two great live bands; this made for a fun filled evening of marvellous proportion. Support came from the local legends Reckless Breakfast with their high energy fat ska sound which at times slipped into heavier rock. What an epic set guys! The main highlight of the evening came from the six-piece theatrical band The Carny Villains hailing from Bristol with their blend of stomping swing and Balkan styled folk, played with the raucous energy of punk rock. These guys absolutely smashed their set. It was a sheer delight to watch their tight musicianship. Be it with the humble Jews Harp or when they all managed to ‘ride’ the double bass during a crazy rendition of ‘The Ace of Spades’ during the encore, love, love, love it! So lucky to have these guys in Lampeter, come back soon! The next event to be hosted by Celf Llambed Arts is set to be an absolute corker. Vocal heroes Regime will be headlining on Sat 30 June. These guys from the Pembrokeshire Hills via Bristol bring their show of social and political commentaries. It’s set to be a full-on party of hip hop, reggae and rock enough to make audiences jump, laugh and think. Support comes from Calfari a six-piece rock band from Anglesey, with their welsh rock-pop sound. The café is open from 7pm, the main venue doors open at 8:30pm along with a fully licensed bar. Tickets are £12 for Adults and £8 concessions, available from the Mulberry Bush in Lampeter, Andy’s Records in Aberystwyth and The Green Shop in Llandeilo or online at thelittleboxoffice.com/victoriahall. This is set to be a sell out so be quick! Tracy Styles 20

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND As regular visitors to Long Wood will be aware, after the massive storm damage we suffered in March, and the subsequent clear-up operation, the footpath from our main car park at the visitors centre into the woods is now open again. The path was closed for longer than we would have liked, and we would like to thank everyone for their patience in waiting for it to be reopened. The delay was caused by the need to undertake a full safety survey of the area, which led to the advice that we should remove some further trees as they were at very high risk of being blown over. This remedial work has now been carried out. There is still much work to be done on this site, and during the summer we will be removing felled timber from the area, and working with a contractor to prepare the site for re-planting. This will involve a certain amount of ground work and improving of drainage, as well as the creation of a new picnic area and a number of wildlife ponds. This work will involve the use of a digger, and for public safety it will be necessary for there to be further closures of the footpath. We will endeavour to limit these closures, and minimise the impact of this work on users of the woodland as far as is possible. All closures will be advertised throughout the woods and through social media. We ask all visitors to Long Wood to follow all warning signs. It is intended that this work will be completed before re-planting the site in native broad leaf

during the winter. Look out this autumn for information on tree-planting days. In conjunction with clearing up after the storm damage and re-opening the footpath, we are currently working to improve facilities at the visitors centre. As those who follow us on facebook will know, we have recently installed a coffee machine, and our excellent volunteer team have built picnic benches which are now situated at the car park. We are currently open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and will be extending open hours during the summer, so why not pop up to the woods for a walk and a fresh coffee? We are also continuing to develop our sawn timber and firewood business, as well as constantly exploring new possibilities for the woods. For more information about Long Wood; our products, volunteering opportunities, events and much more; drop into the woods, follow us on facebook, or look out for information about our new “Saturday Surgeries”, the chance to come along to the woods on a Saturday morning, meet members of the team and learn more about what’s going on in the woods. Dates for the summer are yet to be fixed at the time of writing, but will be advertised as soon as they are available. Ben Allen

Lampeter Food Festival The 21st Annual Lampeter Food Festival will be held on the Saturday 28 July 2018 starting from 10am at the stunning grounds of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter. The festival is run by a small group of volunteers and this year is attracting around 100 stalls selling a mixture of food, drink and crafts. A wonderful mixture of local wines, heavenly fudge, Pakistani street food, local ales, preserves to suit every meal and much more will be available on the day. There will be entertainment with the ever-popular Tribal Unity returning along with many more acts new and old. We are proud to support our local crafts people also with ceramics, wood work and a whole host of other craft stalls attending. Again we have prizes for our best food stall, best drink stall, best other stall and best overall stall - the prizes are being provided by the superb Old Board Company. The festival is supported by Lampeter Round Table who will again be providing the children’s entertainment on the

day and also the man power to help our stall holders arrive!. The local Peoples Market will also be in attendance in the Quad by the water fountain again to provide a flavour of their locally held market. The festival is dog friendly, family friendly and also there is disabled parking available right beside our stalls. There is parking available in town for everyone else and we encourage everyone who attends to venture into our wonderful little town and experience the treasures Lampeter has to offer. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates of the festival as time goes on - we try and change and develop every year and this year is no exception! We look forward to warmly welcoming you on the day. Elin T Jones

Pumsaint WI On the 5 June the ladies of Pumsaint WI held their meeting in the Coronation Hall and welcomed Jacki Lewis and her friend to talk to us about Clyne Castle and Gardens near Mumbles. Jacki's grandfather had been head gardener there and she had spent much of her childhood playing in the gardens. We were told about its history, and we all now know what to go and see in the area. The talk was very interesting. We had our refreshments followed by a short monthly meeting, and decided on a visit to Llanerchaeron, on 14 August, to see the exhibition of petticoats marking the centenary of "Votes for Women". Our next meeting will be on 3 July and we will be visiting Diane's farm to see her horse Dolly. Directions will be sent later. Ysgol Henry Richard

Compiled by Rhiannon Lewis

Listening to the pupil’s voice is a priority at Ysgol Henry Richard and was praised during the recent ESTYN inspection. Pupils from each form group are elected democratically annually to one of four forums – the ECO, Healthy Schools and Digital committees along with the main School Council. During the present academic year the school council have discussed various issues including the appropriate use of mobile phones in school and the Language Charter and were key in the process of creating the school’s new Behaviour Code. During their discussions on the school’s Anti Bullying Policy they decided to hold a competition to create a cover for the current policy. So many excellent entries were received that the council have used the four winning designs as posters around all three campuses. Congratulations to 1. Catrin Lloyd 2. Drew Bryant 3. Cari Davies and Sophie Morgan on their work. Recently the Dyfed Powys Police Commissioner, Dafydd Llewelyn attended a meeting of the council and this was an excellent opportunity to hear about his role as well as questioning him on school and local issues including ways of reducing the traffic speed around the school area and the use of CCTV cameras locally.

At the recent Ceredigion Youth Service Awards ceremony held at Theatr Felinfach many pupils from Ysgol Henry Richard were congratulated on their effort, work and successes during the recent year. Special congratulations need to be extended though to Trinity Tofani Smith, year 11 who was awarded the Outstanding Individual Achievement of the Year Award and to the school’s after school Cookery Club, led by our youth worker Beca Davies, who won the award for the Best Community Project.

Did you know that the Urdd Gobaith Cymru National Eisteddfod is Europe’s largest youth competitive event and attracts more competitors than the Olympic Games? Waw! Once again this year pupils from Ysgol Henry Richard travelled to the Eisteddfod to represent Ceredigion and proved great success – 21 prizes in the Art and Design competitions with every item exhibited in the Glamorgan Hall; Zara Evans (yr8) 2 nd in the solo recitation for those in years 7-9, second prize also for the recitation party and 3rd prize for Amy Yarwood (yr11) in the Woodwind Solo for those under 19 years. Well done everyone!
