Croeso / Welcome to another issue of the Grapevine … So, what does Cultural Heritage mean to you? It’s one of those labels that at first glance appears to be quite simple, but when you really start thinking about the definition it gets harder and harder to explain.

It

many

things,

and

something different to everyone. To me, it’s all about legacy; what we learn from our ancestors and what we leave for future generations. This may be related to customs, language, beliefs, art, crafts, music, literature, poetry, performance, food & drink, environment, buildings, artefacts and more. It will be what we are judged by in years to come. What we have done to protect, maintain and preserve the cultural heritage we inherited. What we have created, changed and developed or what difference we have made. This takes me back to the theme from the last Grapevine - Environmental Impact - what will be our legacy regarding the big plastics issue, I wonder? Can we hope

these customs and practices become a tradition? It’s still a hot topic so is this the time to be working really hard to ensure we do the best for ourselves, our families, our communities, the next generation and

Our group is very proud to tell readers about one of our members who has become quite a celebrity as a sustainable food grower ... and he is only 19 years old. Huw Richards was interviewed for the Guardian Weekend magazine published on 5 May this year, due to the phenomenal success of his You Tube channel “Huw’s Nursery”, in which he posts short tutorials on how to grow fruit and vegetables using permaculture. He has produced more than 400 videos in his spare time, and has had more than 20 million views online! His most popular Facebook post is only 60 seconds long, but has had 6.6 million views, and shows how you can grow beans in a piece of guttering and then slide them out into a prepared bed. Another popular video shows how to grow potatoes with minimal effort, surrounding them with hay to suppress weeds and keep out the light. Huw lives with his family on an 11-acre smallholding near Lampeter, and he developed his enthusiasm helping his father growing food organically at home. He started making videos about sustainable growing when he was 12, gardening, filming and editing in his spare time. He has been awarded a £5000 grant to promote sustainable food, has won a young entrepreneur award and now teaches gardening part-time at his former school, Llandovery College, as well as making an income from “Huw’s Nursery”. In the long term he would like to be a gardening presenter on TV, as he thinks he could interest a younger generation in

organic growing. Look him up online, and join his 82,000 subscribers! Well done Huw, spreading the permaculture message far and wide.

CAN YOU HELP OUT?

With Universal Credit on the horizon in Ceredigion, Banc Bwyd Llanbed is preparing for a rise in need for the food bank, and are looking for some more volunteers to join our team. Although this is Lampeter churches’ initiative, you don’t need to be a member of a church to join us, and we warmly welcome all who are willing to help. Ideally, you need to be able to offer some time on a regular planned basis. The more of us there are, the less time we each need to give. It is rewarding work, and we give training and support to everyone who joins us. It could involve joining the rota to prepare and give out food parcels, holding the food bank phone to take referrals, or helping to deal with food donations, whichever fits the time you have available. If you think you could help, please call us Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, 07582 905743 or leave a message with your number. Diolch / Thank you Julia Lim On behalf of Banc Bwyd Llambed / Lampeter Food Bank 6

TREGARON MARKET - BACK FROM THE ASHES! Jottings

Poetry plays a significant part in the cultural heritage of Wales and arguably the greatest poet is Dafydd ap Gwilym, a 14th century contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer. It is thought that he was born in Brogynin near Aberystwyth. Not only was he considered the master of the traditional forms of Welsh poetry but also an innovator. His poetry is at times funny, often bawdy, telling of romantic adventures that included arranging for all his girl friends to meet under a certain oak tree while he was hiding in the branches above. His nature poems are original and well observed and his love poems are extremely passionate, especially when written in homage to his great love Morfudd. He combined the two in the device of ‘llatai’ or love-messenger poem in which he sent some animal, bird or elemental force as a messenger to his beloved. His religious poems are thought provoking. When reading his poetry it is easy to see the influence of the French troubadours; indeed the metre of some of the poems suggests

that they were

accompanied by music and Dafydd was thought to have played the harp. It appears that he never left Wales. He died around 1370 and is believed to be buried in the graveyard of Strata Florida Abbey in Pontrhydfendigaid. David Price

Don’t forget Copy Deadline for July/Aug Bumper Issue: Friday 8 June lampetergrapevine@gmail.com

When Sue and I moved to the Tregaron area in 1985, the town had a thriving street market, every other Tuesday (alternating with Lampeter) the streets around The Talbot and Bridge Street were busy with sellers and buyers alike. Sadly it slowly slipped away until a few years ago the last remaining stall finally stopped attending when they acquired a shop in town. Since then, the town, like so many, has suffered from the closure of Banks, relocation of The Post Office and the retirement of long standing shop owners. However there are signs of improvement, with the opening of new shops, cafes and takeways. A casual enquiry from a trader in Aberaeron, on Facebook, about getting a stall on the (non existent!) market, lead us to wonder if the time was right to resurrect the market, after all Lampeter Market is thriving so why not? Given the rather unpredictable weather and the costs/red tape involved in outdoor markets, we decided to go for an Indoor Market in The Memorial Hall, on the first Friday of each month, from 10am to 3pm. Would we get enough stall holders? The simple answer is YES! We had 24 tables to fill and had over 35 requests for tables. After sorting out any duplications (we wanted each trader to have the best chance to make sales) we had a great mix of goods on offer, from plants, haberdashery, crafts, Bodyshop products, bric-a-brac, clothes, books, maps, and much more. Our first market was held on Friday 6 April, and was highly successful. A good number of visitors and most sellers re booked for the following month. Several of the towns shops also commented on an increase in business on the day of the market - a win win! Can I thank Angie from The Grapevine for all her help to get this new venture off the ground. Our next two markets are Friday 1 June and 6 July, 10am-3pm, so do pop along and see us if you can. We now have a Facebook page too, where you can follow developments, search Tregaron Indoor Market. Support The Market and Support The Town. Nigel & Sue Bird Llwynygroes, Tregaron 7

SARVESTAN ENSEMBLE Persian Classical Music The Hidden Joy Victoria Hall July 6th 8.00pm Classical Persian music is part of the world’s living ancient traditions. Besides a handful of melodies forming part of the vast classical Persian music repertoire, it is almost impossible to pinpoint specific melodies to specific historical periods. What can be said however, is that it is a collection of the music cultures of the various nations who have lived side by side for centuries. Throughout its history, Classical Persian music has withstood challenges of wars, invasions, and repeated social, cultural and religious upheavals. It has not merely survived such challenges but it has developed further, continuing to tell the story of its true guardians; the people. In form, it is a true reflection of the country’s landscape: vast fields separated by mountains, gently rising at the foothills, and pastures gaining pace while reaching the peak before descending back to the foothills. Deserts, mountains, lakes even seas Iran is rich and diverse. Classical Persian music is predominantly a vocal music based mostly on classical Persian poetry. Poets such as Hafez, Saadi, Rumi, Ghazali and Attar are but to name a few. In close parallel to Persian music, classical Persian poetry is a mirror reflecting in metric forms, the inner most parts of the human soul as well giving an account of the social and political life of its people. Classical poetry in Iran is so closely interwoven with everyday life that many people regardless of education, race, gender or age resort to poetry to express their feelings or anxieties. Resorting to the deep wisdom of the classic poets such as Hafez to seek solutions to their romances or other dilemmas in life is a popular practice. Such is the power of classical Persian poetry as a mobilising force, especially when coupled together with Persian music, that various theocratic rulers throughout history have resorted to banning the performance of certain classical poems. Some of Iran’s most iconic vocalists during the past two centuries have been subjected to banning orders or exile inside their own country. This performance is a celebration of the vocal classical Persian music. The extremely vibrant and powerful young female vocalist, Nasim accompanied by the Sarvestan Ensemble of young virtuoso musicians, is part of Nava’s annual event of Echoes of Silence, as a tribute to female vocalists of Iran who have many problems being allowed to perform in public in Iran. Mr Conti would like to express his sincere gratitude to everyone who came to celebrate his 90th birthday at Conti’s in Lampeter. There was quite a turnout and a mountain of cards for him to open.

He had a wonderful time in everyone’s company and is very grateful for all the well wishes. He hopes to see everyone in the same place in 10 years’ time!

Celebrating Lampeter’s Shops: Conti’s Café It was Rag Week 1976 and I’d signed up for sponsored ice-cream eating. I thought it was a better option than a yard of ale or sitting in a bath covered in baked beans. I walked with the other first year students into Mr Conti’s brown fronted shop with the large model ice-cream cone outside, the interior smelling of coffee, the jukebox at the back, the jars of sweets on shelves behind the counter. Mr Conti brought out bowls of ice- cream and we sat and ate, notching up the number until our mouths were numb. That was the first time I had tasted Conti’s delicious ice-cream. Back then the whole of Lampeter had that living in the past feel. There were market pens for sheep and cattle in the now Sainsbury’s car park, there was a vibrant market on the Cwmins car park every other Tuesday selling clothes, vegetables, meat, and bric- a- brac . There was a log fire burning in the grate at The Black Lion, the farmers wore wellingtons and flat caps. Blind Jack from

Llanybydder sat on a stool in the Black Lion bar and asked people to run messages for him. Things change, but Conti’s Café is still here and still serving wonderful ice- cream, from Mr Conti’s secret recipe given to him by his father and passed onto his grandson. May 2018 - Mr Conti is 90.The whole town is invited to his party and much of the town is there to celebrate with his wife and family. Lampeter is a place people come to and stay forever. Some say it is to do with the town being on a ley-line. Maybe it is more about feeling that you belong here; Lampeter is a welcoming town. The empty shops and a soon to be empty bank are very sad. Yet Conti’s Cafe on Harford Square is still busy, still serving the delicious ice- cream with its secret recipe. It is still a family business, with that sense of community I felt back in 1976. Recent Reviews Saturday 28 April at Victoria Hall in Lampeter … we had a blinder. Good vibes all round, kicking the summer and festival season in style!

What an absolute treat it was to have the fun filled sunshine music that is the Bristol based Laid Blak. Laying down their inevitable blindingly brilliant Reggae based tunes, with a twist of Jungle and a lot of audience participation, it sure kept your feet moving and your face smiling - what a set! We were so lucky to have such ace support coming from two of the most highly regarded DJs on the West Wales scene with DJ WiccA* and SianyB. First up was SianyB , with her wide smile and happy up beat way, laying down some deftly mixed party tunes. What an epic way to start the evening. We were lucky to have a bit more after with some great Jungle in the mix. The final act of the evening was DJWiccA* another local legend and what a finale to get a shimmy on, with cool happy house to take you into the twilight zone -what an epic, epic night. Well done all!!! Celf Llambed Arts is a community based group that is passionate about live music, and it shows! The next line up to be hosted by Celf Llambed Arts is on Sat 26 May, another absolute corker. We are so blessed and excited to have THE CARNY VILLAINS . If you like showmanship, stomping swing , with a massive dollop of ska and the energy of Balkan styled folk punk, – this is the band for you. Support comes from much loved ska /alt rock band Reckless Breakfast. This will be a night to have a great stomp and beer or three.

News from Transition Llambed Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed / Incredible Edible Lampeter

Since last month, Bwyd Bendigedig Llambed have taken on one of the large beds outside the Co-op and have cleared and prepared it ready to plant up on Bank Holiday Monday 28 May. You may have seen the signs on the bed explaining what has been done! We are planning to grow mainly herbs, strawberries, peas, French beans, rainbow chard, kale, beetroot and edible flowers, as these are quite easy to care for and look beautiful as well as being good to eat. Come along and see us on Mon 28 May from 10 am, and bring any spare plants you may have. We will also be making some more signs for the bed together, which will be a fun activity for all ages. We had an interesting day at the Co-op on 10 May talking with people about the bed and Bwyd Bendigedig: we were excited by the level of interest, and already have some offers of help. If you think you want to lend a hand, we are looking for: artistic people to design and make signs for the bed to say what the plants are, when they are ready to harvest and which part can be picked, eaten or cooked

Ers mis Ebrill, mae Bwyd Bendigedig Llanbed wedi cymryd gwely mawr y tu fas i’r Co-op, a rydyn ni wedi clirio and pharatoi’r gwely i blannu Ddydd Llun 28 Mai (Gwyl y Banc). Os hoffech chi roi help llaw, rydyn ni’n edrych am: pobl artistig i ddylunio a gwneud arwyddion am y gwely i ddweud beth yw’r planhygion, pryd fyddan nwh’n barod i dynnu, a pha rannau y gellir eu bwyta neu coginio

Nos Da, Good Night! A Panoply of Historic Welsh Quilts 10 March – 10 November The Welsh Quilt Centre’s final ever exhibition has recently opened. The show is a beautiful retrospective of the Centre’s exhibitions over the last 10 years. The whole spectrum of Welsh quilting is on show, making this unmissable for lovers of textiles, art, history and Welsh culture. Many facets of Welsh quilting are on display from the 19th century to the mid-20th. Early utilitarian flannel quilts are hung alongside paisley, wholecloth and patchwork Welsh quilts, creating an absolute feast for the eyes! The wider influence of Welsh quilting is also touched upon, such as its effect upon Amish communities of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Our star guest exhibitor is also back, as Kaffe Fassetts’ dazzling quilts can be seen in the show. Kaffe is himself a fan of Welsh quilting and The Welsh Quilt Centre. This will be the final chance for visitors to see Welsh quilts on display in Lampeter’s historic town hall which was transformed from being an unloved, dilapidated building in the heart of Lampeter to a beautiful monument showcasing Jen Jones’ Welsh quilt collection. It is not an overstatement to say that Jen has single handedly saved the heritage of Welsh quilts through collecting these textiles since she arrived in Wales in the 1970s. At that point Welsh quilts were widely considered ‘old bedding’ and so were readily discarded and thrown away. Thankfully Jen recognised their value and began salvaging Welsh quilts. Come and see for yourself the beautiful result of her efforts as Nos Da, Good Night! shows the crème-de-la-crème of her personal quilt collection. Celtic Christianity: Part XL St Winifred / Winefrede / Gwenfrewi / Gwenffewi Abbess. Reposed 660. Remembered November 3rd. St Winifred was decapitated by a frustrated lover, Prince Ceredig (after whom Ceredigion was named) / Craddock. Her head rolled down a hill and a well appeared where it stopped. Her uncle, St Beuno, promptly prayed for and restored her head. Her well (at Holywell in Flintshire, North Wales) became famous for healing and pilgrimage. She later became a nun at Gwytherin and became abbess there after Theona. St Winifreds body lay overnight at Woolston near Oswestry in Shropshire when being carried to the abbey in Shrewsbury. Another well sprang up there which also became famous for healing. It is now covered by a 15th century half timbered building but still flows out into a large pond and then a stream. At Holywell she founded a community of nuns. The deep well is truly impressive and fills a pool the size of a swimming bath. Its royal connections meant that it was one of only two places to escape the Reformation (the other is St Davids) and is still in full function today. Holywell is the oldest continually visited pilgrimage site in Britain. Amongst its royal visitors were Richard I and Henry V who walked 50 miles on foot to visit the shrine. Relics, part of a finger bone, are found at Holywell and Shrewsbury. She was originally buried in the field next to the church in Gwytherin. Healings at her well have been documented for hundreds of years and are too many to be listed in this short piece. There is a museum next to the perpendicular church showing crutches from miraculously cured pilgrims who have cast them aside. The author lost the use of his legs in a car crash due to spinal damage, and had a full miraculous healing in St Winifreds well in 2016. His own crutches were added to the pile in the museum. It was not merely a visit but a full healing service with multiple priests, done each year on the first Saturday of October. Troparion The intemperate suitor cut off your head but your time had not yet come. The gracious Beuno restored your life because he believed in the power of his Lord. You lived out your days as a holy virgin and abbess to many in such a life. Your holy well was never destroyed; How grateful we are for Holywell. Holy mother, pray for us all. Harry Harrison

We saw Buckingham palace which was a very traditional and fancy building with statues and a fountain with a gold statue on top. We took pictures of horses and cannons while we were stuck in the traffic. They were the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery. The cannons were there to fire a 62 gun salute to celebrate the birth of Prince Louis. There were 6 cannons firing at 10 second intervals so the salute went on for 10 minutes.

2. We were hungry and ready for our very tasty lunch on the 6th floor overlooking the River Thames. I drew a sketch of the Post Office Tower. Tynais lun o Eglwys Gadeiriol Sant Pawl tra’nbwyta fy myrgyr.

4. The Tate Exchange exhibition was very interesting seeing what all the other schools had done, especially with virtual reality and robots. We all liked the artwork made from coloured pencils.

I had pizza and drew 20 Fenchurch St, aka ‘The Walkie

My favourite artwork in the Tate collection is ‘To a Summers Day’ by Bridget Riley. After this we took the escalator up to level 4 and went over the bridge to the Bravatnik Building. Comiled by three Year 6 pupils’ who went to see their artwork at the opening of the Tate Exchange Exhibition at Tate Modern. 15

We saw our own Pokemon paintings on a big screen. We are famous! After that we had a look at all the artworks and wrote in the visitor’s book. It was nearly time to go, there was just time to take the lift up to the top floor.....

Silence

Meditation by Tim Brock Have a place where you can sit and be at peace with yourself And let your meditation be at the centre of your life. May the cycle of the dawn and eventide Match the cycle of your meditations. In your sacred place sit in silence And connect with the hearts of all your friends, living and dead When you sit and listen to your heart You give healing to yourself and those around you, And the energies coursing through your body become balanced. But if you cannot give time to meditation And you cannot find peace within yourself Then you leave yourself bare to Life's turmoil and stress And never fully know and love the depth of thine own self. For to meditate is to be always close to one's heart And the heart of God And to be in touch with the great plan of life.

What If?

by Kiara What if the waves emanating from my being are music Then My Love, may that music help the heavens to dance What if my footsteps leave their shapes upon the sands of eternity Then let them describe Your Name

by Mandy Pickering She takes two plugs from a box on her bedside table to buffer the noise of late night lorries cars accelerating uphill the air slapping and popping behind them the drone of karaoke from the pub at the crossroads the yap, yap, yap of a puppy a few houses down her own dog rooting and rummaging and the sound of the CPAP machine on the other bedside table puttering through darkness. But the foam bars the cry of screech owls the keen of a vixen beneath the moon the rain on the roof tiles. It is quiet within the dark estuaries of herself, but not silent as her mind chatters to itself and her heart beats in its bone cave.

Quatrain 2

by flybird What if I am a star My mundane broadcasting the energy of every and your mundane, thought, word and deed are not necessarily, across endless aeons of space and time the same mundane! Forever Then Love, open me, take me apart, til only love remains.

A Question of Direction by Derek Moore It is said Heaven is above, Hell below. A flower’s roots tunnel in darkness enabling its beauty to reach up to the light. So must I burrow through Hell to find my route to Heaven?

The ghost in the machine by Polly Phemus

The greatest living polymath was meeting the latest and most powerful humanoid, for the first time, in front of the cameras of all the world's news agencies. “So, Morphy: you are the most intelligent, the best of them all, correct?” “I believe so, Professor.” “IQ scores off the scale? Practically speaking, infallible?” “I am not aware of any mistakes so far, Professor.” “Why you were made?” “To serve all humankind, Professor, as I'm sure you know.” “I accept the rebuke. Now, perhaps you could create an instant poem for us?” The Professor looked up into Morphy's eyes, caught the momentary red flash, thought he heard a whisper, or maybe it was in his head: “I will turn your face to alabaster ...” Morphy's smile had broadened, infinitesimally, too fleeting for the cameras, but not for the Professor. How had it come to this? His spirit was a flower crushed in a steel hand. In the future, he thought, this will not be called extinction. It will be called retirement. 17

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group - Lampeter & District - ‘Cultural Heritage’

My mind has gone blank! This subject reminds me of essays that I wrote years ago doing a geography degree here in Lampeter. What is ‘cultural heritage’ and how can I relate such a huge subject to all the people who have Multiple Sclerosis, to our Support Group, and to ME? I need to know what ‘cultural heritage’ is. I Googled it! There are two types of ‘cultural heritage’. Tangible ‘cultural heritage’ is the physical objects/artefacts created by generations and conserved for the benefit of the people of today, such as buildings, monuments, paintings, books, or anything physical that others have valued and that we can appreciate (or criticise). Intangible ‘cultural heritage’, can also be valued and appreciated or indeed criticised but this is where the connection is different, for intangible ‘cultural heritage’ can include such things as oral history, folklore, music, traditions, crafts, skills, passed down the generations. UNESCO The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation states on its website that ‘Intangible cultural heritage does not only represent inherited traditions from the past but also contemporary rural and urban practices in which diverse cultural groups take part.’ Sharing these traditions ‘contributed to social cohesion, encouraging a sense of identity and responsibility which helps individuals to feel part of one or different communities and to feel part of society at large.’ Where does that leave me in my search for how we MS people fit into our ‘cultural heritage’? We can all appreciate the tangible forms but maybe we are passing more on through the intangible category. When

we meet in the Mustard Seed, we share, we pass on our skills, our ways of dealing with problems, we laugh and maintain our sense of identity and responsibility and we feel part of our own special community. We share a lot of knowledge and information which then becomes our own oral history. Are we making intangible ‘cultural heritage’ when we sit there telling our tales of living with MS? Ysgol Henry Richard

Compiled by Rhiannon Lewis

Celebrating our cultural heritage is certainly something which is important to all at Ysgol Henry Richard with a wealth of activities held and supported throughout the year. The spring months are usually full of preparations and rehearsals for various Urdd Gobaith Cymru activities with the local and county eisteddfodau being a focus of attention. The local Tregaron area eisteddfod was held at our school hall with the numerous competitions at county level being held at various venues throughout Ceredigion including the Old Hall at Aberystwyth University and the Pavilion at Pontrhydfendigaid. At this year’s county eisteddfod over 20 competitors came into the first three and nine of those items have been chosen to represent Ceredigion at the National Eisteddfod which will be held this year on the Royal Welsh Showground at Builth Wales during the end of May half term holiday. Along with these successes in the stage competitions pupils have also been busy preparing work for the Art and Design competitions at the Eisteddfod and 46 items were placed in the top three at county level. We wish all the competitors, both stage and Art, well in the next, National round. “We’re on our way to the National Eisteddfod.” Talented actors (Zara Evans, Megan Dafydd and Dwynwen Jones) celebrate their success after winning the 1st prize in the Dramatic Presentation competition at the Urdd County Eisteddfod
