The Secret Travels of the Grapevine… Grapevine is now available around the world: issuu.com/ lampetergrapevine/stacks … but we are also really interested to know how far and wide the paper versions have travelled; what local villages and communities it has reached and what route it has taken - Or perhaps how many people have passed it on to someone else? Are you planning any travels over the coming months? If so please don’t forget to pack your copy of Grapevine - we’re always fascinated to find out where in the world it goes with you.

Here is our mag at Glory Peak, a beauty/picnic spot in the town of Pfutsero. At 4,700 feet, it is the highest inhabited place in the State of Nagaland, North East India. There are fabulous views .... when the rains stop and the mist lifts!

Can your copy of Grapevine be the most environmentally friendly traveller? Or will yours be shared in a variety of unusual ways, be found in an quirky local location, be upcycled or recycled? Where will your copy of Grapevine end up? Why don’t you send us your photos: lampetergrapevine@gmail.com and we’ll publish them in future issues. Eds.

Croeso / Welcome to another issue of the Grapevine … I am drawn to make connections with a recent family adventure around Europe by train, when we were lucky enough to visit some wildly contrasting but iconic venues. We marvelled at the immense inventiveness, creativity and spirit of individuals and civilisations and gained an insight and understanding of the wider world ... From the

seemingly gravity defying structure of the Leaning Tower of Pisa to the beauty, harmonic proportions & mysticism of the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence, still lined with its 13th century merchant shops; the sheer capacity and crowd management built into the Colosseum,

allowing the 50,000+ audience to exit in 5-10 minutes! Or the sheer scale of its retractable ‘velarium’ awning controlled by a team of sailors; the stunningly intricate, decorative and ornate architecture of the glass-roofed shopping arcade and the gothic cathedral in Milan,

with construction that spanned six centuries; the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, destroyed by volcanic pyroclastic flows from Vesuvius in AD79, buried 20 metres (50-60 feet) under volcanic ash, with its wooden & organic matter preserved; to the particle

physics research projects at CERN that have seen discoveries of anti-matter, the Higgs-boson, the invention of the world wide web,

and the large hadron collider particle accelerator (the largest machine in the world), which sends high-energy particle beams at

Cothi Gardeners’ Club We are very pleased to announce that renowned plantsman Bob Brown will be our guest speaker for October. ‘Too many plants, Too little space’ is the amusing theme of Bob’s talk on 18 October, a happy problem that many of us will identify with. Bob is well-known in horticultural circles both at home and abroad with visitors to his Cotswold nursery coming from as far away as Japan. He has written for many gardening publications and been

awarded the prestigious Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society. Bob, together with his son, run specialist nurseries in Evesham and Badsey, Worcestershire, with over 12,000 varieties to choose from. Look at www.cgs.net for details. “I aim to offer good old fashioned plants, newly introduced plants, bred not only for colour and form but for vigour as well” says Bob, so we are delighted that he will bring a selection of plants from his nursery for sale. 4

Tickets for this event are available now; £5 (inc. refreshments) and we advise booking in advance. Please contact the Club, www.cothigardeners.com, or via Facebook or phone Brenda Timms on 01558 650187. Doors open at 6.45pm when refreshments will be available. Cothi Gardeners is a lively club meeting on the third Wednesday of each month, 7.30pm, at Coronation Hall, Pumsaint, SA19 8UW. All meetings are open to members (annual membership £14) and guests. THE BIGGER PICTURE Two years ago, a request in the Grapevine about setting up an art collective to showcase local artists brought people together to form Teifi Arts Lampeter. They showcased their work last year as part of the Ceredigion Art Trail with pictures in the windows of Lampeter shops as well as in the Victoria Hall. This year they have continued to exhibit as a group at The Mulberry Bush, Canolfan Long Wood Visitor Centre and Origin in Carmarthen. They are always looking for new venues and would be delighted to hear from you if you have a venue that you’d like to be infused with the colour of original art. Please contact: 01570 493177 There will be a pre-Christmas exhibition in early December at Riverside Mill, Cellan where artwork can be purchased at affordable prices. Sue Moules The Lampeter Food Project in the Victoria Hall on Thursdays between 4 -6pm was set up in May 2017 by Lindsay and Sarah who were concerned about food waste as well as the needs of the community where some struggle to make ends meet. The Lampeter Food Project welcomes everyone from children to pensioners and gives them a free meal. Donations are always welcome, but they want people to take away food and use it rather than it to go into landfill. Thursdays have a community feel with highchairs round the table as the local community tuck into a meal. The Co-op, Sainsburys, Premier, The Mulberry Bush, Watson and Pratts and Greggs all donate. Those who come to Lampeter Food Project are a varied group, a mix of old and young. “We are non-denominational and welcome everyone. Other Ceredigion towns, like Cardigan, have been doing this for years” Lindsay said. “This is such a brilliant idea” says a young mum, and the sentiment is echoed by a retired lady. “It has a communal feel and people can socialise, so its benefits are manifold.” Anyone who would like to donate to the project or who can help should contact Lampeter Food Project on 01570 493791 or 07879267088.

Lampeter Food Surplus will be operating from Victoria Hall 4-6pm every Thursday … distributing free food to anyone who wants it. We are also appealing to any local businesses who would like to donate their edible surplus, as well as willing volunteers to help cook and/or pick up food. Contact: Sarah, 01974 821 219 sarahjhulme@outlook.com

CLEARING OUT A FOOD CUPBOARD? The Food Bank is always grateful to be considered if you are clearing out a cupboard, and would welcome a call on our mobile 07582 905743 to talk about the kind of non-perishable in-date food that we can accept to give to our clients. If there are open packets of in-date foods, the Food Bank cannot use these, but Sarah Hulme would be happy to take them for the Lampeter Food Project, the free community meal cooked every Thursday at Victoria Hall. Sarah can be contacted on 01794 821219. Food left in cupboards is often out of date or the tins have become rusty, and we cannot offer this to anyone! This should really be disposed of - so please save everyone the trouble, by not trying to transfer or offer this unusable food. Diolch /Thank you.

Mulberry Bush Café 30 September - 11 November 2017

This political art exhibition by Angela C. Wild explores the myths and realities of motherhood and exposes how the reality of women's experiences clashes with false messages of 'perfection' and domestic bliss. Join us at the Mulberry Bush Cafe Friday 6 October 10am -12pm for a presentation of the work followed by a mother to mother discussion about our lives: A chance to meet the artist and explore the exhibition.

Easy Peasy Apple Squeezy (Lampeter Apple Day) It's that time of year again, we've nearly drunk all of last years cider, but fortunately the apples are ripening and are managing to hang on to the branches - for now. As I write we are just over a month away from the Lampeter Apple Day event on Saturday 21 October. Once again we have the privilege of joining Lucy and Ben at Watson & Pratt's where there will be live music from The Hicksters again this year … toe tapping stuff alongside hot food in the form of wonderful raclette (spuds, melted cheese and gerkins) and pizza coming out of the bakery. There is also going to be a cider tasting this year, with over thirty types to try and buy; tea and coffee and the ever-popular hot apple drink & a raffle of locally produced goodies, all raising money for Wales Air Ambulance. Some crafty folk too, with Ben the woodsman and all his clever carved gubbins, and Simon the maker of extraordinary woven wicker objects. It is a tradition of Apple Days (well, it is now) to have a man playing the bagpipes during the first and last pressing, and I am pleased to report we have obtained the services of such a musician! Check out the poster opposite for full details, or have a look on the Permaculture website @ www.lampeterpermaculture.org/events/public-events/ For those unfamiliar with the idea of a Community Apple Day, it's quite simple really. The Lampeter Permaculture group turn up with all the equipment necessary to convert apples into juice. Amongst the kit there's a home made press, that uses a washing machine drum, as well as a professional scratter strapped to a Singer sewing machine base - all very 'Heath Robinson' at times, but hugely practical and satisfying to use. You bring along your apples or pears, and we all get stuck in to produce the juice. There's physical effort involved but nothing too arduous, and children are positively encouraged as they seem to enjoy the exertion! The strange world of scratting and pressing will soon become clear to all - it really is simple. By far my favourite part of the day is seeing the look on the faces of small children as they taste the strange brown liquid straight from the press. I’ve yet to see a reaction other than wonderment! A carrier bag of fruit produces about a litre of juice, so don't forget to bring some containers to take the juice home in (thoroughly cleaned plastic milk containers are fine). When it’s busy we can’t guarantee that the juice you get back will all be from your own apples, but it all tastes pretty darn good! We will have a display of local apples, so if you have a tree in your back garden but don't know what it is, bring a sample along and see if we can match it to one of the known varieties. 2017 does not look to be a bumper year for Apples, so you may need to check out the gardens of relatives, friends and neighbours. Remember, for juicing they do not need to be in perfect condition. To answer the most common question we hear on the day producing cider really is as simple as taking the pressed juice and putting it in a demi-john with an airlock on top - 4 months later the natural yeast on the skin of the apples when they were pressed will have fermented the juice into Lampeter Cider - easy peasy apple squeezy. 6

The Big Picture of Dance

In the spirit of encompassing ‘The Big Picture’, Tribal Unity Wales are hosting The Lampeter Festival of Dance

Saturday 14 October Victoria Hall, Bryn Road We’ve contacted dance groups from mid and south Wales in a bid to celebrate a bigger picture of dance, its origins and its future. We’ll be showcasing styles including Egyptian Bellydance, Balinese Indian Fusion and Swing. Our internationally acclaimed guest dancer, Katie Holland will also be teaching workshops on Sunday 15 October. We hope that you will join us as we explore ‘The Big Picture’ of dance. Wendy Steele Tribal Unity Wales

In October every year, American Tribal Style® belly dancers around the world dance to the same piece of music on the same day and share their videos on YouTube. It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness ‘The Big Picture’ as far as ATS® is concerned, hundreds of dance groups sharing a moment in time together. Most of our lives concentrate on ‘the small picture’; mortgages to pay, mouths to feed and friends and family to love. In class at Tribal Unity Wales, we focus on dancing in small groups or duets, offering opportunities to the dancers for eye contact, synchronicity and connection. We share time out of the studio too, sometimes at dance events but often at impromptu Friday night pub meets or picnics. Our world is small, dancing in the community, sharing what we love and, hopefully, inspiring people to dance. This year, we’ve begun to look at ‘The Big Picture’. The saying goes ‘Charity begins at home’ and we’ve always supported Wales Air Ambulance and continue to do so, but recently, we held a belly dance party, raised money and collected donations for Swansea Humanitarian Aid Response Project. With direct contact with charities in areas around the world where ordinary people have been forgotten, often after wars or natural disasters, they collect the donations most needed at that time; clothes, toiletries, medicine and medical supplies. We are all people; wives, mothers, brothers and lovers and for me, that is ‘The Big Picture.’ ‘The Big Picture’ is us; we all belong to the human family. The more we discover and understand about other cultures and their music, passions and beliefs, the more we find we have in common and that can only lead to love and trust. The Dalai Lama says it better than I …

Celtic Christianity: Part XXXIV

Llanfair Clydogau Show 2017

Saint Celynin Ascetic Reposed 6 century Remembered November 2

This is a picture of my wonderful dogs taken after the

Saint Celynin, lived in the 6th century, one of the sons of Prince Helig ap Glanawg, who lived at Llys Helig before the sea inundated the land off the coast of Penmaenmawr. Celynin was related to Rhun, son of Maelgwn Gwynedd, Prince of Gwynedd, who is known to have ruled in the 6th century, and that he was also a brother to Rhychwyn, the saint associated with Llanrhychwyn church. St Celynin was a hermit in the hills above Conwy in North Wales at Llangelynin. His church was originally quite hidden in extensive woodland near ancient route ways and is among the remotest and smallest in Wales. There is a holy well in the churchyard. Llangelynnin Church is possibly one of the remotest churches in Wales, and is amongst the oldest (Llanrhychwyn, further up the valley, is a little older). It is in the shelter of Tal y Fan, the mountain to the south-west. The current building dates from the 12th century, and was probably pre-dated by an earlier church of timber, or wattle and daub construction. It is probably the first religious settlement in the area. Defining the boundaries of Celtic Christianity includes in tradition, authority, time, and space. The Saxon invasion of the east in the 400's separated Britain from the European Byzantine Empire and started the slide into the Dark Ages. They pushed back the Celts to Wales (then known as North Wales), the Cornwall/ Devon peninsula (South Wales), Cumbria (East Wales). See Gildas' "De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae". The Picts of Scotland faced their own battles. As such we can harken back to pre-400 AD when Britain was the home of the Britons (Celts + Picts). As such the saints from before the Saxon invasion, from where we now call England may be gathered in as Celtic saints. However we will finish the fifty-five saints of what we now call Wales before moving onto them. Harry Harrison

follows: Fred won his for The Best Sheepdog but I’ll let you into a secret … he was the only sheepdog! Nye (Aneurin) however, earned his in the class for The Best Trick. I parked my mobility scooter over one side of the ring and then holding onto Nye’s harness I walked over to the other side. Using a quiet voice, I told him to go back to the scooter and to bring me first one glove then the other. Using the key words BACK to SCOOTER, PICK UP GLOVE and then the OTHER ONE, he found them even though I had pushed them under my jacket. I had put a long lead on him just in case he got distracted with all the people and other dogs. How could I have doubted him, he did it perfectly? Ever since I rescued Nye as a puppy from Many Tears Rescue, he has wanted to learn and help me. He helps me to balance, picks up things I’ve dropped, fetches things, undoes zips pulls off socks and gloves, and does many

other things. The name Aneurin means ‘golden and honourable’ which is certainly what he is. Despite having been savaged by his mother as a puppy, hence the deformed ear & numerous scars, and having undergone surgery for elbow displacea, he remains a beautiful dog inside and out. People have referred to him as ‘gentleman dog’, ‘The Thinker’ and ‘Mr Brains’. Young Fred is work in progress as Nye’s understudy! Judith McKay Copy deadline:

They gather In their thousands Seeking fame and fortune “I’ve been waiting all my life for this” Declares the sixteen year old hopefulWho with tuneless abandon destroys The classic melodies of my youth Whether talented or talentless So many try to stamp their mark On a world where fame is idolised And sometimes infamy revered Leaving footprints in the mud Which in the sands of time

and in the rhythm of the didgeridoo transcending time and space, taking you back to the stars.

Will be washed away Without a trace

I am haunted by familiar places That I have never visited. Guernica, more famous now For the painting in the Prado Than for that bomber's raid That ended at Hiroshima And Nagasaki. Treblinka - not, As anyone from Wales Might reasonably suppose, Some place beyond Trefforest, Up by Treorchi or Treherbert. I thought I knew the score --My Lai, Katyn and Sharpville -Until I searched the internet And found Between Golgotha and Guantanamo A catalogue of catastrophe, Atrocity, Murder, massacre and mayhem. What comfort that some Were replicas And a few were nothing But imagination?

Got No ‘Soul’ Man

In a dark and waxy home, grows a seed of hope and light, in a world of possibilities, where a bigger picture can be seen.

The absence of light

by Polly Phemus Dreaming, I am an old, mad sheep Standing, in the rain, awaiting what? Revolving inly, to escape a ghoul Some godless monster, from formless deeps Is risen now, inside my soul. And then he sees me, sees my terror; Who will help me, save me from him? And turning now, and clothed in night We see each other, in the mirror: Darkness is not just the absence of light.

Big Pictures by Stan Scan For the big picture step back from a painting close to a window. Moving art breaks backs however light is captured. Stay in the frame and you might get carried away. 13

by Kiara She put her shoes beneath his bed, hung her hat upon his soul dreamed his dreams it must be said, until one day the wind turned cold, she woke to see her dreams were bound the walls closed in, her heart near drowned she took her hat retrieved her shoes and gave them to her daughter she found a mirror on the shore betwixt the land and water ah let me dance upon the moon and hear the silent laughter blessed is mankind and fair but romance is a snare oh let the rivers of my soul run free to nourish every plant and tree. May every being far and near be blessed and whole and full and free ah Love I give my heart to Thee

Jottings

The results of surveys of some of our flora and fauna make for depressing reading. Decreasing numbers, changes in distribution, and many additional variables means that trying to understand the big picture is difficult. Climate change due to global warming certainly plays a part: the milder weather that we now experience in the U.K. is encouraging some

species, especially birds that normally breed in southern Europe, to breed in England. The Bee-eater is a good example. This colourful bird attempted to breed in Nottinghamshire this year but failed, probably due to the wet weather in early August depleting the amount of insect prey. We already know that our bee populations are in decline. Infrastructure is also involved; an increasing amount of land taken

for construction is reducing habitat. The proliferations of wind farms is thought to have increased the chance of bird collisions, but recent studies also indicate that the noise generated by the turbines is having an effect on some of our upland birds, especially Skylarks, causing them to change their song pitch. This could affect their breeding success since song plays an important part in courtship. David Price

replace the state, thus making Rojava an anarchist experiment. While they are described as socialists, it’s rather different from Marxist interpretations of socialism. It's social anarchism. Rojava never directly seized the means of production or took private property, but rather they have taken steps on the local level to make sure that cooperatives are more competitive than privately owned businesses. Dr. Dara Kurdaxi, a Rojavan economist, has said: "The method in Rojava is not so much against private property, but rather has the goal of putting private property in the service of all the peoples who live in Rojava." The administrations raise money through import tariffs and selling oil and other natural resources. Only one region has any taxes, which comes in the form of an income tax that doesn’t apply to income earned from cooperatives. Due to such policies, "the cooperative system contributes approximately 80% to Rojava’s economy." Rojava is currently enjoying lack of interference by most Western nations as it’s crucial to destroying ISIS. However, some worry that once ISIS is defeated that Rojava will be faced with Western hostility. Rojava already suffers from a Turkish embargo, which prohibits fertilisers passing to Rojava, due to Rojava’s Kurdish population supporting Kurdish autonomy within Turkey. This led to food shortages within Rojava. Compared to other nations and regions within the Middle East, while there is yet work to do, Rojava offers hope. It casts away decades of authoritarian rulers, corrupt and failing economic systems and oppression of women and LBGT+ communities. While it may not be a utopia, it’s a stark contrast compared to the region’s past. This bold political experiment has deep implications for the future if Rojava succeeds. Cyffin

ISIS is losing ground, money, and influence across Syria and Iraq. Airstrikes from the West are pummelling their infrastructure and military in the so-called ‘caliphate’. However, a barely mentioned coalition of ground-forces is directly attacking the fundamentalists. One of these groups is the People's Protection Units, or YPG. The YPG are a mainly Kurdish militia, that includes Arabs and foreign volunteers. It was formed in 2004 as the armed wing of a Kurdish leftist party. It grew during the Syrian Civil War and engulfed other Kurdish groups that fought ISIS and Syria’s oppressive dictator. The YPG has a sister-wing in the YPJ, the Women's Protection Units, an all-female military that mainly consists of Kurdish women. Both of these military groups have strong LGBT+ presences. These socialist and feminist forces are the main ground forces in the coalition liberating Raqqa ISIS’ capital. The land controlled by these ground forces is called Rojava. The region gained autonomy in 2012 against a backdrop of chaos and war. Since then, the land under Rojavan control encompasses most of Northern Syria. Rojava’s leftist political system is radically different to convention, too. They seek to have "a bottom-up, Athenian-style direct form of democratic governance". In this case, local communities govern themselves, through elected assemblies, within limits of a central constitution which has “direct democracy, women's empowerment, economy of cooperatives, and political plurality” as its guiding principles. These municipals join together to 14

The seed pods are plump on many vegetables, peas, broad beans, climbing beans, all those juciy vegetables just waiting to be eaten … but wait … before you eat every last one, have you thought about saving some seed for the next season? Are there some plants in the ground from last year and they have now set seed? Some onions, radish, kale, maybe? They are just as valuable as your current year's crop, a resource that will give you loads more plants, more than you could use yourself, all for free! Growing your own veg is fun, rewarding, healthy and saves you money, but it can also be part of a bigger picture. If a vegetable has done particularly well for you, growing it again makes sense. Saving seed is the next step, it saves you more money and if it works for you, it may well work for others, so why not

donate some to Banc Hadau Llambed and help others to enjoy the same bounty? The library is a completely free service, supported by Lampeter Permaculture Group, Transition Llambed and Transition Llambed Trust and is being run by volunteers, all of whom are keen growers. It will be a public resource which will be housed at the People's Market in Victoria Hall from November onwards and be available for people to donate and borrow seeds. The library will concentrate on locally produced seed which is well adjusted to our variable climate here in West Wales. Vegetables growing here need to able to withstand wind, heavy rain, variable spring temperatures, growth at altitude, besides many other tests! If something works, why not share it? If you know of an avid vegetable seed

collector, do let them know, we would love to have a wide variety of seeds in the library for everyone to borrow. All seeds need to be open pollinated as F1 hybrids will not grow true, so do check your seed packets to see what you have planted. Come along and be part of the bigger picture! Register for the library or donate seeds on 21 October, the official launch day at the Lampeter Permaculture Groups Public Apple Day to be held at Watson & Pratts. Alternatively come along to the library at the People's Market from 11 November onwards. Email: banchadaullambed@outlook.com Cathy Streeter

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND It’s been a busy summer at Canolfan Long Wood. We have had a flurry of art exhibitions from the Teifi and Llanfair Arts groups and a mesmerising harp recital from the Clarsach society at the building. These events have proved popular with all attending and we hope that we can continue to build on these as the rest of the season progresses. Weekend events at Canolfan Long Wood will start to wind down as the nights start to draw in, but we are planning Christmas and other winter season events including preparatory works for the Community Orchard, at the moment, and these will be announced soon. Events are advertised through our website, mailing list and Facebook pages, but don’t worry if you are not a user of social media, as the Facebook page can be visited and explored without requiring a Facebook account. You can sign up for the newsletter by clicking the subscribe link on the Long Wood website. The building and other woodland infrastructures at Long Wood are available for rent for other events. If you are considering an event please do not hesitate to get in contact with us here to discuss your requirements. As this goes to print, those who have indicated an interest in our coppice scheme should have received mail with further details. If you have expressed an interest and

have not been contacted, then please get in contact with us here at the office as soon as possible. 01570 493355 or info@longwood-lampeter.org.uk A big thank you goes out again to all our Wednesday volunteers. Our woodland Wednesday volunteer group continues to deliver outstanding improvements to the woodland, including access, footpaths and sapling maintenance. Their work has definitely become an integral and essential part of the woodland management here and their dedication and commitment to helping the woodland continue to be a sustainable resource is very much appreciated. Open to all, mixed ages and abilities, with full training provided, the group meets every Wednesday at 10am at Canolfan Long Wood and work generally finishes about 4pm (you are free to leave before this obviously!). If you are interested then please get in contact Jon or Leia.

PAUSE FOR HOPE The first ever cross-denominational church service for Cancer comes to Wales After an advanced Lung Cancer diagnosis three years ago, Jane Holmes from Ffarmers, has inspired many by her positivity, fundraising and promoting cancer awareness. Since diagnosis and subsequent treatment, Jane and her husband Steven have been overwhelmed by the support of the community and have met so many others in a similar situation. They also have learnt of the impact and scale that cancer has in our society and know it can be a lonely place and a tough challenge, especially when the diagnosis is fresh in the mind and the journey ahead is uncertain. In 2015 they had the pleasure of meeting Professor Ray Donnelly in his role as founder and president of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and heard also of his faith and how he started the Pause for Hope charity, www.pauseforhope.org.uk. Since the first ecumenical service in 1999 in St

Francis Xavier's Church, Liverpool, there have been annual services around the country and it is with the idea of hope and sharing strength through faith and support networks that Jane & Steven wanted to spread the work of Pause for Hope by organising the first ever service in Wales. With that in mind, the first service in Wales has been organised on Sunday 22 October, with great support from the local churches in Lampeter, as well as having involvement from Ysgol Bro Pedr who will be singing and taking part in a poetry competition. The service, which will be bilingual and held in St Peter’s Church, Lampeter, promises to be uplifting as well as providing hope and comfort. After the service there will be the opportunity to meet others and chat over tea/coffee and cake! There will also be representatives from local groups and cancer charities to answer any questions about treatment or cancer or anything else. The Pause for Hope initiative was set up with the following objectives: • To pray that the day will quickly

come when all cancers can be prevented or cured • To bring together those affected by all forms of cancer, their loved ones and carers • To remember dear ones lost to cancer • To help those who don't have cancer but have a great fear of the disease • To reach out to those who are unable to attend the Pause for Hope services. Members of all religious denominations and faiths are welcome as well as those with little or no religious faith. The first Pause for Hope Service will take place in

St Peter’s Church, Lampeter Sunday 22nd October 2pm For more information about the service in Lampeter please email Steven on stevenholmes0@gmail.com Steven Holmes

New wave of interest in Egyptian Belly Dance As you may be aware, Rose Barter who created the Ceredigion Belly Dance network of classes, has been taking a break from teaching since April whilst she undertook more dance training with JWAAD.

sisters Barbara Matthews whose particular passion is dancing to drums. Contact the arts centre for more information and to join her class. With so much new interest we realised it would be a good idea to offer some 6 week beginner classes to give an introduction to the music, dance styles and culture of this beautiful dance form. I will be offering one of these courses in St Thomas Catholic Church Hall in Newcastle Emlyn on wednesdays from 8pm to 9pm beginning the 20th September. We also plan to offer the same 6 week course in Lampeter shortly. If you would like to have more details, then you are very welcome to call me on 07792248962 or Mel on the number above. I am also in the process of creating a class which will focus on the health benefits of Egyptian Belly Dance and will begin in January 2018. Look out in the next issue of Grapevine for news of this class and others offered by Rose and Mel. Look forward to seeing you at one of the classes. Catriona Macdonald

Mel Long and myself have been covering her Lampeter classes in the meantime, and with all that Rose has told me about the training, Rose’s return at the beginning of November promises to be one full of treasures for her classes. We are delighted to share that there has been a whole new wave of interest in Egyptian Belly Dance classes in the area recently and so Mel and myself are happy to announce some new beginners classes beginning this Autumn term. Mel Long will be offering classes at Tregaron Leisure Centre on Tuesdays 5.306.30pm starting 3rd of October. Contact her on 07879 651 072 to find out more and sign up. There is now also a new Aberystwyth classs also on a starting Tuesday 3rd October. This class is being taught by one of our dancing 27

World Sight Day World Sight Day takes place on Thursday 12 October this year. It began in 1998 and since then it has raised awareness about blindness and vision impairment throughout the world. There are over 286 million people affected with visual problems. 39 million adults and 19 million children are blind. 90% of blind people live in countries where eye care is restricted, in that females only receive 35% of care. Lately I have been interested in the history of glasses and found the first record of them was in 5 BC, with hieroglyphics showing simple glass pieces. Nero is reported to have watched the gladiators through pieces of emeralds. One of his tutors tried globes of water on some glass to see. In Italy in 1286, glass was first used as a help for vision. The first use of monacles was reported in the 1720’s, worn by an antique specialist in Rome. Nowadays we think of Jimmy Edwards, Patrick Moore, Chris Eubank, Johnnie Craddock and Colonel Mustard. In the 18th and 19th century pieces of glass were used by attaching them by ribbon to a hat, so they hung down in front of your eyes. This lead on to pince-nez, lorgnettes and scissor glasses. Spectacles as we know them now, arrived in the 20th century. Nowadays you can have glasses with frames made from all sorts of materials in all sorts of designs, e.g. with wipers, out of cardboard, buffalo horns, chopsticks, ostrich feathers and more. There are even sunglasses made to look as if they are melting, called ‘Dripping’ glasses. Elton John is reported to have said, on an interview on Radio 2, that he has about 250,000 pairs! Even a pair with 57 lights spelling out his name. Of course, America has the most expensive pair costing $400,000 with diamonds. I have always been a little bit envious of people who can pick them up for a pound or so at some of the bargain shops. How I wish I could do that. If I could, I would buy lots and lots, all in different colours and designs, and wear a different pair every day! I did manage to buy some sunglasses recently for £1. They are bright pink and about 4x the normal size, but I love them, even if I do look completely ridiculous. Don’t forget to re-cycle your old glasses by taking them to your optician. Traws Link Cymru West Wales Rail Campaign Ymgyrch Rheilffordd Gorllewin Cymru Now that the Feasibility Study into the reopening of the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth Railway is under way, we are able to report that the international engineering consultants, Mott Macdonald have been appointed to do this work by Transport for Wales, the Welsh Government body appointed to consider all aspects of transport. Mott Macdonald did substantial work towards the reopening of the Borders Railway from Edinburgh to Tweedbank which was opened by the Queen in September 2015. One of our committee members spoke to them and they confirmed that they considered that the problems of reopening the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway would be considerably less than those which confronted Network Rail in rebuilding the Borders railway. In particular they have looked at all the structures along the line (tunnels, bridges and cuttings etc.) which have all been maintained to a high standard by the Historical Railways Estates on behalf of the Department of Transport. As has been pointed out in these pages previously, 97% of the track-bed of the railway is completely unobstructed and, while some engineering work would need to be done to bring Victorian embankments and other engineering structures up to modern standards (for example, re-building the bridge over the A482 and the river Teifi by the Lampeter Co-op and raising it to allow large pantechnicons to pass), the major obstruction to the old track is the entrance to Aberystwyth. As the Scoping Study highlighted, such a problem would be simply solved by digging a new tunnel under Pen Dinas which, considering the complicated tunnel built for Crossrail in London, should pose no difficulties. That and the building of a bridge across the river Tywi at Carmarthen are the major engineering impediments to connecting the two towns by a railway closed in the Beeching cuts in the 1960s. Traws Link Cymru has already collected 17,000 signatures for our petition and in September we have been collecting signatures at Aberystwyth, Lampeter,

Carmarthen and Swansea university campuses. We also intend to hold petition signing stands in Carmarthen itself. The more supporters we can get, the more likely it is that funding will be found. For after all half-a-million pounds spent on rebuilding the railway will bring huge benefits to our impoverished part of Wales. AM Baroness Eluned Morgan’s recently-published strategy document ‘Rural Wales: Time to Meet the Challenge 2025’ pointed out that, in terms of transport, rural Wales has very little dual carriageway or motorway infrastructure. To provide this across our beautiful and hilly countryside would be hugely expensive, vastly more so than re-building the railway. And the railway would connect five universities with over 50,000 students, provide swift links to the outside world for the 250,000 residents and attract tourists and extra business. So for those who support our campaign we appeal for people to step forward and lend a hand. The more people who help us campaign, the more we can prove that our part of the world needs and deserves investment. So this is the big picture which we need to promote. Rebuilding the railway would revitalize the whole region and bring prosperous businesses back to area, helping to retain young people who need jobs and boosting the number of students who choose to study in this beautiful west Wales. Contact Adrian Kendon for more information and to volunteer your support. Adrian Kendon Chair, Traws Link Cymru Dolanog, Llanwnnen Road, Lampeter SA48 7JP 01570 218036

MAT-BASED PILATES PLUS

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group - Ceredigion

Principles and Practice: the principles

‘The Big Picture’

which form the essence of Pilates can Big green pixels, bright yellow ones, orange and dark blue, bright blue, pointy black ones all bouncing across the screen trying to jostle the others into the right place on the screen. The green ones fall to the bottom to form the grass, as the bright blue ones float gently up to the top and become the sky. The pointy ones are small and become birds while the bright yellow ones juggle and push getting hotter and brighter to make the shiny sun. The orange and dark blue start jumping happily through the grass followed by black and whites. Random shapes, numbers, colours all coming together and making one ‘big picture’ that of a child dressed in orange and dark blue, running happily through the grass with a black and white dog. All joining and creating a happy scene. Our bodies are created by many pixels, many pathways leading to the connected whole. Not now the simple picture described above but a super-duper complicated network of connections backwards and forwards, from and to the brain, controlling us and what we do. Pathways of nerves travelling through our bodies, amazing and wonderful, but sometimes these pixels get broken and the picture becomes fragmented just as on the computer or television when the signals have trouble getting through and the ‘big picture’ breaks into small pixels again. Distortion, broken pathways, nerves unable to do the jobs they are meant to do. But still the coloured pixels are there, trying to mend, and trying to regain ‘the big picture’ of that child and dog running happily through the grass, under the bright blue sky with the big yellow sun shining on them. On Monday 4 in the Mustard Seed we had an interesting time with Sue Mullock, the MS Nurse who told us about her replacement when she retires in December. Come and join us on the 1st Monday of the month 1.30-3.30, in The Mustard Seed, Lampeter back room. We welcome anybody with MS, carers, and anybody wanting to know more, from wherever you are. We have Welsh and English speakers. You are also welcome at our Aberystwyth group which meets in the new Tesco’s community/charity room 12.30-2.30 on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. be applied to the whole of life. It is a mindful – and fun – exercise where each movement is performed in a conscious manner and in tune with the rhythm of the individual and their energy patterns. No competitiveness here; simply tuning in with your own body. Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates at the

beginning of the twentieth century. He taught it to internees in the first world war, and later opened an exercise studio in New York Benefits: regular practice can effect increased energy, improved posture, body shape and muscle tone; greater strength and agility; facilitate calmness and unity of body/mind/spirit, mental clarity and increased stamina. Energy Exercises: in my Pilates Plus class, I am offering some exercises created by Donna Eden which facilitate energy management and energy flow. Donna Eden has been working with people for over 30 years, with amazing results, helping people to tune into their own energy flow and create greater wellbeing. These exercises are very

Ysgol Henry Richard

Compiled by Rhiannon Lewis

Our school motto is ‘Mewn Llafur Mae Elw’ (‘if you work you will succeed’) and at the beginning of a new academic year we must congratulate all our pupils who received excellent GCSE and other equivalent qualifications during the Summer. They really did work hard and succeeded. We wish them all well as they either continue their studies in the sixth form at local schools or further afield, in their college courses, apprenticeships or work. We will be following their Some Year 11 pupils celebrating their GCSE success careers with interest. At the beginning of term also we have been busy preparing the school calendar for the year ahead and this certainly gives the ‘big picture’ and proves that there is more to a successful school than good results. We are already arranging visits to the theatre both locally and beyond; visits to Bath and Portmeirion to inspire creative art work; a visit to the Winter Fair for those studying agriculture; competitive games versus other schools and various sporting events; a skiing trip to Italy; a full thematic PONTIO (Transition) scheme reflecting the breadth of the curriculum throughout the year for pupils in year 6; the school and Urdd eisteddfodau; lunch time clubs and activities and a production of ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ in July.

Language ambassadors and their Bastille Day assembly. Language ambassadors The scheme to promote the use and study of foreign languages is certainly going from strength to strength with our language ambassadors arranging events throughout the year. Among last year’s activities was a successful French café with delicious fresh ‘crepes’ to celebrate Shrove Tuesday and a special assembly to note ‘Bastille’ day.

At the end of year KS3 achievements afternoon, certificates were awarded to pupils in recognition of their 100% attendance, by the guest speaker, former pupil, Sergeant Hanna Edwards. Hannah is the Dyfed Powys Police Authority’s youngest ever female sergeant. Sergeant Hannah Edwards also congratulated Year 7 pupil, Anthony Rooke, on raising the highest individual amount of sponsorship on our annual sponsored walk.

Zara Evans (year 7) winner of ‘What’s your talent?’, with the adjudicators, former pupils Ifan Gruffydd, Aled Huw Morgan and Mared Rand Jones, the evening’s compere Emyr Lloyd and head master Dorian Pugh. ‘What’s your talent?’ This was our version of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, and we certainly proved that ‘Tregaron’s Got Talent’! Over 40 individuals and groups competed in the three categories – under 12, 12– 18 years and the open competition, and the adjudicators praised the extremely high standard of singing, instrumental performances, dancing, stand up and acting. The overall winner was Yr 7 pupil Zara Evans who astounded the audience and adjudicators with her rendition of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ and her dancing and gymnastic skills.

‘Y Pictôns Bach’ (our junior ukulele group) performing at the end of term Open Evening and BBQ. PONTIO (Year 6 Transition days) The last PONTIO day of 2016-2017 was celebrated with an open evening and BBQ. As well as the delicious food and popular chocolate fountain, there were various activities including a performance by the junior ukulele group, a climbing wall and sporting activities arranged by local clubs. We have been finalising the calendar and activities for this year’s cohort as well as visiting local Primary schools and campuses to meet parents and to promote the scheme. The first PONTIO day of 2017 -2018 will be on Thursday 28 Sept with a total of 7 days in all during the academic year. Should you require more information please contact us on 01974 298231. The school’s work in promoting the Ceredigion Families Information Services was recognised by Carys Owens, presenting the Partnership Award to head pupils (Nia Rees and Garin Evans), and head teacher Mr Dorian Pugh.
