Croeso / Welcome to another issue of the Grapevine … the local community newsletter that has become one of my lifestyle choices it seems …. So what is it that drives us to make certain decisions about the way we live? Is it a matter of circumstance, destiny or fate, or do we always consciously control the direction we take? Does our lifestyle define who we are, and what we become or are there far too many influencing factors to make a judgement? I’m sure you would agree that lifestyles have changed considerably over the years. Expectations, opportunities and resources have shifted from generation to generation, often transforming lives. We no longer expect a ’job-for-life’, but instead assume that multiple jobs will be the ‘norm’ for survival. Society as a whole has changed, communities have altered and we have had to adapt. Consider, the speed of technological developments and how this has brought the world to our fingertips; with 24-hour news, information and comment and details of everyday lives being shared as never before; Social media, providing a platform to instantly record events, a forum for debate, a way to communicate with the masses and a vehicle for self-promotion which also happens to demand constant attention, update and reaction. I must admit that I generally try to avoid this form of communication where possible,

When I first moved here, to Cwmann, there

Lampeter Food Surplus

seemed to be many Hedgehogs, in the spring, you could hear them arguing early evening,

will be operating from Victoria Hall 4-6pm every Thursday … distributing free food to anyone who wants it.

and if you were lucky you would see them bouncing, maybe showing off their prowess to each other. A wonderful sight. Now I am lucky if I see any, there have been a few mornings when

I have seen hog poo on the path, but recently it has been very watery, I have come to the conclusion that it has been poisoned

We are also appealing to any local businesses who would like to donate their edible surplus, as well as willing volunteers to help cook and/or pick up food.

with those diabolical pellets, why is Lampeter still selling these ghastly things, there are plenty of alternatives . Come on Lampeter, don't just reach for the poison every time something gets in the way, when there are no hedgehogs left it will be a very sad day. Many thanks

Copy Deadline: Fri 8 September It’s So Morbid….. Talking about Death. Who wants to do that? Its so morbid…… Actually it’s surprising what arises when we really do start talking about death. It’s something which will inevitably touch all of us and yet most of the time we avoid discussing it and try not to pay it any attention. Lampeter Death Café has had a chequered existence for some time, usually only a few people show up and the conversations range over all sorts of death related topics; believe it or not, sometimes there is a lot of laughter. You don’t have to have been close to someone dying to be part of the Death Café group, maybe you are just curious, maybe you have a story you really want to share with others, maybe you don’t want to talk at all. Would you like to come along? We promised to start meeting again in September but feel strongly that there needs to be more people meeting regularly to support this project and enable it to continue. Let us know if you are at all interested, if twelve or more people express an interest we will book a venue and meet regularly, if not, Lampeter Death Café will quietly disappear. Call Charlotte, 07967924613 or find us on Facebook. 5

CLEARING OUT A FOOD CUPBOARD? The Food Bank is always grateful to be considered if you are clearing out a cupboard, and would

welcome a call on our mobile 07582 905743 to talk about the kind of non-perishable in-date food that we can accept to give to our clients. If there are open packets of in-date foods, the Food Bank cannot use these, but Sarah Hulme would be happy to take them for the Lampeter Food Project, the free community meal cooked every Thursday at Victoria Hall. Sarah can be contacted on 01794 821219.

Food left in cupboards is often out of date or the tins have become rusty, and we cannot offer this to anyone! This should really be disposed of - so please save everyone the trouble, by not trying to transfer or offer this unusable food. Diolch /Thank you.

Lampeter Rotary Club has a new campaign to raise funds for a major development project in Kenya. “Anything for Africa?” the initiative aims to collect unwanted household items from the community here to be resold to raise money to improve access to mains water for the community of Boré, over there. As you know, carrying water is a major task for many African women and girls and Boré is no exception. The attached image shows one such girl from the community, Shelley Kanzé, carrying a 20Kg container, which she must do for three hours a day. If people in Lampeter can donate enough surplus books, toys, tools, furniture, video games, etc we will be able to deliver clean mains water to shared communal standpipes and enable Shelley and her friends to get back into school where they belong. For more info contact: Ru Hartwell ruhartwell@gmail.com Polite Reminder: The Grapevine is produced and distributed by a small team of dedicated volunteers. Please be patient if we do not respond immediately to your queries or requests ... as we do not monitor our inboxes full time. We will get back to you as soon as we can. Rhannu’r Cynhaeaf 2017 Harvest Share

Neuadd Victoria Hall Llambed /Lampeter

Sadwrn, 23ed, Medi / Saturday, 23 September 1.30 - 3.30pm Grŵp Paramaethu Llambed/ Lampeter Permaculture Group and Transition Llambed are organising Rhannu’r Cynhaeaf / Harvest Share 2017. What is it?

A free eating event open to all the people around Lampeter LPG already organises the Seed Swap and the Plant Swap at the beginning of each growing season for people with surplus seeds or plants. The three core ethics of Permaculture are: People Care, Earth Care and Fair Shares What better way is there to live out People Care and Fair Shares, than sharing in any surplus that we have harvested at the end of the growing season. The idea is simple. Cook or make up a dish using some or any bits of surplus from your harvest, (if its fruits, then make a dessert) and bring it along to a “Bring and Share” lunch at the above date, time and place and eat it with your neighbours. Anyone without a surplus is invited to come join in too. Donations, which will go to a local charity, are welcome.

This a “Lifestyle” choice that anyone can enter. Hock Lampeter Permaculture Group/ Transition Llambed

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND woodland infrastructure, improving walks and paths as well as sharing skills and company on (sometimes wet) Wednesday mornings and afternoons. The summer can’t go on forever unfortunately and it’s time for us to start thinking ahead towards the winter season. As well as ground staff working hard to prep this winter’s firewood, our coppice programme is also moving forward again this year and we are currently recruiting coppicers for the season. Coppicers will have the chance to undertake the coppicing of various sizes of coup within Long Wood In exchange for the timber produced. Full details can be found appearing on our website and Facebook pages over the next few weeks. Make sure that you get in touch with us if you are interested and we can include you on the mailing list as this starts to come together this year. Coups are limited in availability and work commences in October. If you would like to know more about the coppicing, volunteering, timber milling or other activities at Long Wood please do not hesitate to get in touch: 01570 493355 or info@longwood-lampeter.org.uk

Lifestyle We’ve had a busy summer at Canolfan Long Wood. The building has been used now by Local arts groups to sell and display their work as well as hosting a stunning Harp performance earlier this month from the Clarsach society. Coupled with regular bookings at our forest School area, the milling area turning out firewood and quality sawn timber to order, and a footfall count of approximately 60 walkers a day on the summer weekends, Long Wood has never been busier! In fact, the weekend of publication, The Teifi Arts group are displaying works at the building on both the Friday and Saturday (26 & 27 August) so why not head on up, take in a walk and enjoy some local arts? There will be more events at Canolfan Long Wood as the season progresses so be sure to keep an eye out on our Facebook page and Website for updates. If you are not a social media user then don’t panic, you do not need to be “on” Facebook to see our page or events. They are open for all. Our Woodland Wednesday group continues to deliver tangible change in the woods, helping to provide

Corsica and Wales: similar past, similar futures?

After escaping GCSEs, I went to Corsica for a great holiday. In the supermarkets, I saw Corsican produce lining the shelves. The Corsican flag was flown proudly from buildings and draped in small shops. There was a distinct sense of nationality and culture. It made me wonder about the island’s history and political situation, and how that compares to Wales. Corsica was originally settled by Northern Italians and Celtic people. Romans, Greeks and Italian city-states, especially the Genoese, controlled Corsica for many centuries. However, in 1729, a revolt broke out against high Genoese taxes after a series of poor harvests and an independence struggle began. Similarities to this are seen in the Welsh Rising led by Owain Glyndŵr, caused due to nationalism but also exploitative and restrictive rule from the English. In 1754, Pasquale Paoli revolutionised the independent Corsica’s democracy by granting the vote to all men of 25, rare for the period. The independent island saw investment with a university, schools, a printing press, a mint and an arms factory. This period still inspires nationalists of the potential of the island to be progressive, independent and highly democratic, while retaining their culture and language. However, the rebellion was crushed when French forces attacked the island later in the 18th century and the French monarchy took control. It wasn’t until after the Second World War, in which Corsican guerilla activity successfully damaged Mussolini’s forces, did the French state attempt to fix Corsica’s economic problems. They modernised agricultural techniques and lay the foundations for a tourist industry in Corsica. However, many Corsicans saw this as an attack on their traditional way of life, and eyed the reforms with suspicion. Due to the insecurities Corsica faced and the frustration at half-hearted economic policies from Paris, nationalists called for decentralised government. The Fronte di Liberazione Naziunale di a Corsica (FLNC), a group of radical nationalists with links to the IRA, began an armed campaign of bombings, attacks on tourist villages and

foreign-owned properties. This was Corsica’s troubles. Today, only traces of FLNC activity exist. Road signs in Corsica have two-names for each town, one in French and one in Corsican. The French names are designed to be easier to pronounce for the French and symbolises France’s policy of assimilation. It's the same as happened during the Anglification of Wales, with town names renamed to ‘Aberayron’ or ‘Lanybyther’. The remains of the FLNC have spray painted over the French versions of the town names, and graffiti signs around Corsica’s countryside. However, due to devolution, the island’s independence movement has become far more peaceful with nationalists using the Assembly to argue for independence. Corsican devolution began in 1982. Today's Corsican Assembly has limited powers over education, culture and communication, sport, planning sustainable development, transport, some infrastructure management, housing and land, economic development and the environment. However, Corsica’s Assembly does not have revenue raising powers and is subordinate to the centralised French government. This is not enough for most Corsicans. In the recent elections for the French Assembly, three-quarters of Corsican seats went to nationalists. The nationalists range from supporting independence to more devolution and protection of Corsican culture. When compared to the powers of the Welsh Assembly, Corsica’s Assembly has more powers in some areas, but in most areas the Corsicans have fewer powers than the Welsh decided by the people of the island. Overall, the French state is hostile to decentralisation, with most presidential candidates promising no change or a rollback of regional power. Macron was painfully neutral on this topic and promised a ‘conference of territories’, which is unlikely to change much regarding Corsica. Corsica has a strong sense of national pride. Corsicans are proud of their island’s culture, history and independence in a way that is not seen to the same extent in Wales. Corsica’s Assembly shows that nationalist parties can make a breakthrough if they press hard enough on even the French government. With a tighter makeup of the French Assembly, Corsican votes could become crucial to the French government and give them leverage to increase Corsica’s powers. If three-quarters of Welsh seats went to nationalist parties in the recent General Election, as they did in Corsica, you can bet that Wales would have a better chance of securing stronger devolution and, if Welsh people wish for one, an independence referendum. For this to happen, Wales needs to learn from other stateless nations such as Corsica that have a strong national pride and intelligent debates over independence. Cyffin

Carmarthenshire Meadows Group Jottings

We in modern western societies are now fortunate in being able to express our individual personal identities. In recent years, the monitoring of wildlife has revealed just how much the behaviours of some species are similar to our own. The transgender (non binary) experience reported almost daily in the media has been observed in the Bellbird of New Zealand, a sparrow-sized bird exhibiting both male and female traits although DNA showed it to be female on hatching. Sequential hermaphroditism recorded in some fish is thought to be a survival strategy for the species. It would be interesting to know what happened to the Bellbird when it reached breeding age. David Price Celtic Christianity: Part XXXIII Saint Trillo / Drel / Drillo Ascetic Reposed 6 century Remembered June 15 He was one of the sons of Ithel Hael who came as as a disciple and student of St Cadfan from Armorica to Wales and became a member of the college of Bardsey. St Trillo lived as a hermit at Llandrillo yn Rhos at Colwyn Bay on the North Wales coast. The well chapel, built over his cell, is said to be the smallest in Wales; the water still flows under the altar. He founded a church at Llandrillo in Edeyrnion Merionethshire and another on Anglesey. Trillo became an Abbot, noted for his holiness. His church at Llandrillo contains representations in a 1920s commissioned stained glass of some of the stories of Trillo's life. He was buried on Bardsey. Tram no 7 on the Great Orme Tramway is named St Trillo in honour of the saint. Harry Harrison 11

If so, come along to the Autumnal meeting of the Carmarthenshire Meadows Group, being held at Myddfai 10am-1pm Saturday 23 September We are very lucky to have George Peterken coming to talk to us from Monmouthshire. He is the author of the highly successful and seminal book on meadow management, “Meadows”. Jacqueline Hartley will also be giving us a talk about Dormice, which have been found in the county. These small mammals are very secretive and largely nocturnal, and so rarely seen, but it will be a fascinating insight into their ecology. There will also be discussion time to share ideas and tips with other meadow owners and ecologists. Entry is £3, or £10 to become a member for the year. There will be a break for tea/coffee. Please visit our website, for more information www.carmarthenshiremeadows.com The Meadows Group seeks to encourage the restoration and maintenance of wild flower rich meadows in the county and surrounding area, as a valuable resource, and reservoir of biodiversity. It hopes to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and experience about how to do this in the variety of conditions that meadow owners face. We have been hosting various outdoor events summer including a tour of the meadows at the Waun Las nature reserve at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, practical courses on scything at a nature reserve near Lampeter, and a bee walk at Caerhys Farm harvest festival, St David’s. Karen’s Creative Compendium 027 A great outdoors feel to this late summer edition of KCC as trees, plants and gardens dance around Mandy’s Music Box and we spin out the fading light of hastening twilight against the subtle shuffle of autumn’s advance, writing on leaves, Karen

Utopia

by Doris Critchley Rugged mountains, rushing streams Red kite soars, a buzzard screams Croaking ravens over crest Feeding hungry chicks in nests Riders trekking round the hill Past age old farms, a water mill Runners and long distance hikers There these tracks with mountain bikers Sea birds land on rocks to breed With ample fish their young to feed Migrant birds with mating calls Nest in trees and holes in walls Rivers run into the bay Where children laugh and shout and play Where is this land where all else pales? It has to be in glorious Wales!

Re-Wilding

by Patrick Dobbs

A shiftless old farmer called Wilding Decided to go for re-wilding For it entered his head He'd get more time in bed If his land all went wild, thought Wilding.

Garden Walls by Ceredwen The walls in my garden hold back the Wild Welsh rough-tufted grassy slopes Each stone heft from Earth’s dark womb Standing sentinel, claiming ownership, Half promising protection in temporary abeyance Taming this land of my Mothers, Proud in her heritage Over these walls nasturtiums tumble untidily Roses and geraniums flaunt a fierce passion Of pink and red, demanding attention. Soft brown loam cradles squashes and strawberries Tangy and succulent, Insistent on early morning picking. Low walls are for sitting on Through hot summer days, and nights When moon, shivers quicksilver in her gleaming Through lazy slow-drifting clouds. Best then when all becalmed, silent and still Heady with scent of honeysuckle flowers, To sit and gaze at blue-black, star-fronded sky And wonder at the immense, sheer, tender beauty Of the Universe.

Back to the Wild by Brenda Old It took a year for him to clear the long narrow strip once used as a tip. Now he is gone. It’s not taken long for plants he’d grown and seeds he’d sown to escape the order within his borders.

The Music box by Mandy Pickering Before it broke the notes that rose from her wooden doll body were mournful as a peewit's. Again, again I’d wind the dark blue bow of her kimono to unlock the music within her. And she'd stand tall her black lacquered hair pinned in a peach a smile painted on her camellia lips as her parasol spun to the lonely tune.

Welcome you are by Polly Phemus

Welcome, you are, Mister Green Come to lift our hearts again. Into all our lives, must fall some rain; But by and by, that darkening sky Will break, and blessed sunlight shine Upon our inner countryside again. Welcome you are, Mister Green. 13

Song of the Oak by Kiara The oak tree rooted strong and deep within the earth beneath my feet with mighty trunk and graceful boughs shade and shelter to all allows Beneath the arching sweep of leaves a wild cathedral I perceive green and gold in dappled light I never saw a fairer sight or heard a song more rare and sweet than wind-song through the rustling leaves where little birds sing pure and true under the heavenly dome of blue In this fragrant place of peace my mind is still, my heart at ease Your Grace and kindness everywhere within my soul a yearning prayer

May I be grounded like the tree my heart as generous, clean and free unmoved by draught or freezing rain surrendered, lovely, unashamed to offer shelter like the oak to all earth's lonely wounded folk Would that I may rise as tall under the stars with love for all and hold inside this peaceful place within my heart this sacred space to strengthen me upon the way to do Thy Work and never stray.

The Outdoor Bath by Maj Ickle There aren’t many of us Who get to love her like this Nos da Immersed in a hot bath outside On a star brilliant night with the Silhouettes of oaken folk Bent down to witness This consummation embrace Between woman and water Fire beneath the tough enamel Melts my iceberg alien soul Air is still everywhere Enjoying Cymru whole

SEEDS FROM A DANDELION

Amgueddfa Llambed / Lampeter Museum Hanes Llambed members were pleased to learn of an award given to the Lampeter Museum, which the society runs, for its language work. Under the Ceredigion Language Charter, the Museum on College Street has been given a certificate in recognition of its commitment towards the Welsh language, through its bilingual historic displays and notices. The award is given at bronze, silver and gold standards.

‘Seeds From A Dandelion’ is the title of a new book by Ceredigion poet and performer Karen Gemma Brewer from Gorsgoch, near Lampeter. Produced by Gwasg Gomer for Cowry Publishing, the new collection includes the award winning poems ‘Super View From Top Field’ and ‘Village Fool’ and is now available from Waterstones, Amazon and Lampeter People’s Market. Karen’s work - widely published in Wales, Ireland, England and the USA - mixes her rural experience of hills, valleys, sheep and fields with bizarre and surreal imagery that adds a fresh and often exciting insight to even the most mundane of daily tasks. The opening lines of ‘Super View From Top Field’ are a striking example: “Counting sheep in Top Field, I see Superman fly past in classic aerodynamic pose.”

Amongst the comedy there is also beauty: “Driving to Snowdonia, our relationship slips, like scree, into separate valleys,” (Unsuccessful Attempt); painful rural change: “No-one took any pictures when they pulled the water tower down, to make way for conversion of the farm where Granddad worked,” (Village Fool) and the totally off-the-wall: “the jellyfish, employed to blow the safe,” (Splashpoint); “Pretending to chop wood I accidentally shortened my imagination,” (Fuelish). Karen is also an assured performer, on radio and at festivals, theatres, pubs, clubs, shops, colleges, schools and in the street. Recently acclaimed performances include Lampeter Food Festival, Cardigan’s Cellar Bar, a full week’s run at the Edinburgh Fringe and Ffair Tircoed – broadcast globally on live radio as part of her ‘Seeds From A Dandelion Tour.’ The Tour returns to Wales in September with festival performances at Green Valley Arts, Craig-Y-Nos and Swansea Fringe plus another live radio broadcast, from Tino’s Nightclub, Swansea on the 1 October for Welsh Connections.

With the theme of this issue being Lifestyle, we at Grapevine Towers thought it would be a good idea to consider the changing housing market and have therefore asked Mark Richards, of West Wales Lettings, to share some thoughts with us.

TO RENT OR NOT TO RENT? That is the question, or dilemma, for many. With the banks making it so very difficult to get on the property ladder over recent years, I suggest if you wish to buy, keep things simple. Buy somewhere minimalistic, not a cave, but keep things tight. Then when you get going, upsize if necessary. As an alternative you can rent and do away with the headaches of a mortgage, maintenance issues & boiler servicing etc. West Wales Lettings has been trading in Lampeter for more than three years and we have seen and spoken to many people, of many cultures, wishing to rent. Lampeter’s landlords have long relied on the University but, in the last five years less so, as it has not been anywhere near as buoyant as it once was. Thankfully Dunbia stepped up its business some three years ago, which has helped the rented sector enormously. Overseas workers, some seasonal, have filled the houses previously used by students, and every year more and more make the decision to bring their families to this quiet and safe part of the world. The University is beginning to deal with its property portfolio in the town. Many premises are now for sale and some have already sold, so we will have less empty and unsightly properties in the town, which should be good news for all. This small town needs all the help it can get, and like most small towns, it must adapt to the times and restructure accordingly. Recent laws from Cardiff & Westminster, brought to us by Rent Smart Wales, caused a huge stir in the housing market with the compulsory registration and training of landlords - just about the same time as Brexit, great timing eh. Anyway, it is here, so let us deal with it as best we can. I do not see the new law as a bad thing, as some landlords needed a shake-up to improve their standards and attitudes, and possibly it will be an example to the rest of Britain soon. Investors still come to our office for advice prior to spending their money locally, and not all of them are from the local area. So, it seems to me that the market is as it was a year ago. The rental game goes on, and I say good luck to all. Mark Richards Residential Lettings and Management Agent www.westwaleslettings.com mark-richards@westwaleslettings.com 01570 421111 27

Traws Link Cymru West Wales Rail Campaign Ymgyrch Rheilffordd Gorllewin Cymru

Annual Report 2017 Our vision is to link up the whole of Wales by rail by restoring two missing links in the chain: reopening the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth and Afon Wen to Bangor lines, both closed in the 1960s by Beeching. linking up West Wales more generally with the wider world. It often feels quite remote, living where we do at the moment, particularly if you are reliant on public transport. Improving rail links will also become increasingly important in the future as HS2 goes ahead and with the electrification of the main line to Cardiff. Our particular focus is on reopening the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line, and there have been some significant developments since we started our campaign in 2013. We met with Network Rail in June 2014 and following that very positive meeting we wrote to all the AMs to inform them of our progress and gained the support of 36. This was followed by statements in support by Carwyn Jones (First Minister of the Welsh Government) and by the adoption of our campaign by the Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion County Councils which both passed motions supporting the reinstatement of the line. We also have the support of 46 Community and Town Councils, the Hywel Dda Health Board (and Council), One Voice Wales and the Welsh Language Society (Cymdeithas Yr Iaith Gymraeg). A meeting with Edwina Hart (Minister at the time for Transport in the Welsh Government) followed and she endorsed our vision and funded a scoping study in June 2015. In the meantime we had a meeting with the then Secretary of State for Wales, Stephen Crabb. After the publication of the Scoping Study by consultants AECOM in December, 2015 a working group was set up to advise on the next steps. The group included representatives from Welsh Government, Ceredigion & Carmarthenshire County Councils, Network Rail, Arriva Trains Wales, First Great Western, Mid-Wales Economic Forum and Mid-Wales Railway Implementation Group and of course Traws Link Cymru. The first meeting took place on 9 February 2016. The Scoping Study was thoroughly discussed and TLC members Professor Mike Walker and Adrian Kendon

were given ample opportunity to speak and present our reasons for supporting the line's re-opening. Matters discussed included likely costs and benefits, alignment and environmental/conservation considerations. This was a prelude to further infrastructure appraisal using Welsh Transport Planning and Approval Guidance (WelTAG), looking more closely at the objectives of reopening the railway, and the problems that it would address. A further meeting was convened in June 2016, coordinated by ARCADIS and the result has been the production of a WelTAG Stage 1: Strategic Outline Case Report. This report was considered by our committee to be seriously flawed and a detailed response was prepared and has been sent to Ken Skates AM, the new minister with responsibility for Transport in the Welsh Government. In December last year the Welsh Government approved a budget which included £300,000 for a Full Feasibility Study and, following a meeting with Ken Skates AM we were assured that our campaign would be involved in this. However, we have yet to hear of any progress although, at a meeting in Lampeter with Carwyn Jones, he was able to say that this study was going ahead. Reopening the line featured in the Plaid Cymru, the Welsh Liberal Democrats Party and Green Party manifestos in the 2017 general election. Our campaign has featured in the press (the Carmarthen Journal, the Cambrian News, the Ceredigion Herald, Wales Online and the Western Mail) and on TV and Radio. We have promoted public meetings in Tregaron, Aberystwyth, Llanybydder, Carmarthen, Aberaeron, Llandysul, Llanilar, and other meetings are planned. Belly-Dance teachers in West Wales are on the increase Having explored all types of dance in my youth, I was lucky enough to stumble upon belly-dance classes as soon as I moved to the area 20 years ago, and this offered me the opportunity to build a social group of like-minded women, helping me to settle in quickly to my new environment. I had just given birth and the classes helped to get me back in shape, but also to accept the changes in my body as something to embrace, as a reflection of female strengths. I struggle with performance anxiety, but the nurturing environment of this community and the encouragement of the teachers has helped me to gain courage and strategies, not just Photo: Susan Bates for dancing in public, but for presenting academic papers, and also for just holding my own in difficult situations. This summer I qualified as a JWAAD Belly Dance Teacher, alongside seven other new teachers, located from Cardigan to Aberystwyth, to Lampeter. A number of us have been covering the existing classes in Lampeter and Cardigan over the summer, with our skills put to the test at the belly-dance festival in Cardigan at the start of August. This was a great success, with more dancers and a larger audience than ever before, plus we joined in with the Cardigan Carnival held on the same day. With all these new teachers available, many new classes will be appearing in September, so look out for them, and if you are interested, but cannot find a class on a day, time or location to suit you, now is the time to let us know, as we will do our best to respond if there are enough people to start a new group. Recent Reviews Celf Llambed Arts Review On Friday 30 June at Victoria Hall in Lampeter a great evening of live music, in the true sense of the word, was had. Two absolutely blinding bands, an evening of sheer musical heaven to the back drop of much beer and dancing. What was there not to like? The Fire Pit Collective described by others as a blend of modern and traditional folk music which has been taken in, anarchised and reprocessed. The unmistakable feel of the late night Fire pit was never far away and truly bought a sense of home. With Jay Terrestrials on guitar, Chesney on bouzouki and special guest Maxine from The Fat Panthers on fiddle bringing their anarcho punk folk tunes. The sheer beauty and flow from these true craftsmen of their trade was

delivered with a definitive edge. Touching on land rights, travelling and even pirates. It was not for the faint hearted. Quercus Burlesque supported in their own truly eclectic way. These guys are the real deal to get you stomping. Describing themselves as a ragamuffin band of musical ne'er do well is way off the mark. Seasoned festival veterans who have perfectly distilled and bottled the bizarre. Their absinthe fuelled on occasion tomfoolery has caught the ear of 6 Music’s Tom Robinson. The next line up to be hosted by Celf Llambed Arts at Victoria Hall is 28 September and what a blinder it will surely be. The much loved boys from the Preseli hills, Regime, with their direct hard hitting medley of hip hop, Reggae and rock which speaks to the heart and mind. Plus support from 33

local 6-piece ska/rock band, Reckless Breakfast. Come on let's 'ave it! Support comes from the wonderful duo Major Triadz. The cafe is serving from 7pm, main venue doors at 8.30pm along with a fully licensed bar. Tickets: £10 adults, £8 concessions available from The Mulberry Bush in Lampeter, Andys Records in Aberystwyth and The Green Shop, Llandeilo or on-line @ thelittleboxoffice.com/victoriahall Also on the door if you are lucky. This is going to be EPIC and the tickets will go fast, so be quick! Celf Llambed Arts

to hold together and maintain their ability to function in the face of change and shocks from outside.’

COMMUNITY WILL SAVE THE PLANET ‘We have far more in common than that which divides us’ Jo Cox

CO-HOUSING I am a big fan of this model, which I first came across almost 20 years ago when I invited the pioneer of Co-Housing in this country, to speak about it to a group of older people with whom I was working. I was very impressed from the start. She showed footage of Co-Housing groups outside Britain. Those who lived in these schemes were all over 50 and had their own living spaces in a complex, and also a communal area. Some even had a restaurant! Co-Housing began in Denmark in 1972, and the schemes are common in Scandinavian countries, where they often receive government support. In Holland, there are over 200 Co-Housing schemes. In Britain, it is more challenging to create such a project, as there is no government support. The idea is that people meet for some time to ensure that they have similar aims and philosophies and then begin the task of looking for an appropriate space. It is important that those involved have basic intentions in common. Advantages include plenty of company and support when wanted and also one’s own space. OWCH (Older Women’s Co-Housing) is an exciting new Co-Housing project in North London. It is the first older women’s Co-Housing project in Britain, and they moved in at the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017. I’ve been there and it’s lovely, with a very nice communal space where they can hold meetings/ eat together; and built around a central garden.

In this piece, I explore some different lifestyles. INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY. In the ‘70s, whilst living in a community of sorts in London, I decided I wanted to live in a living space where people were more committed to common goals. For a period of time and intermittently over the years, I explored many intentional communities in Britain. Most lived all in one house, sometimes a very big one. Most of them grew some of their own food, and that was the intention which had brought them together. Others had a spiritual or a personal development focus. What they probably all had in common was the belief that, given the right attitudes and circumstances, people can benefit themselves and the planet through living and working together. And this requires co-operation and commitment. Some of these communities existed for over 30 years; some still exist. Something must be working. FINDHORN FOUNDATION, near Forres, Scotland. I visited Findhorn for the first time in 1974. It was started in 1962, and, as is well-documented, in the early days became famous for its amazing vegetables, grown on spiritual principles, following the intuition of Eileen Caddy, one of the founders, who was in touch with the plant spirits and devas. Findhorn has grown into a flourishing community, based on spiritual and ecological principles, is visited by people from all over the world and is regarded as a successful example of community living. I’ve visited since, and when I was there – twice – in the ‘70s, it was certainly an exciting and uplifting place to be.

So - here are some ideas for antidotes and ways through the loneliness which is rife in Britain. More than that, ways of living life as you want to, whilst using your skills and talents for the good of the community and thus the planet. Shan Rees

TRANSITION TOWNS. There are now a large number of Transition Towns in Britain, notably one of the pilots, Totnes, which was the first to create its own currency in the form of the Totnes pound. TTs were initiated by Rob Hopkins in response to the over-use of resources generally and the fact that oil is running out. Generally, a group of people within a town or area takes action in support of the aims and philosophy. For example, the Transition Town I was part of in North London included groups for educational purposes – showing of films about sustainablilty and successful community living, with a discussion; a group to teach people skills to enable more self-sufficiency, such as making clothes, furniture etc, a Health and Wellbeing group, and so on. In ‘The Transition Handbook’, Rob Hopkins emphasises the importance of a community being resilient –‘Resilience refers to the ability of a system, from individual people to whole economies,
