Grapevine is now available around the world digitally via issuu.com/lampetergrapevine/ stacks … but we are also really interested to know how far and wide the paper versions have travelled; what local villages and communities has it reached out to and what route it has taken? Or perhaps How many people have passed it on? Can your copy of Grapevine be the most environmentally friendly traveller? Or will yours be shared in a variety of unusual ways? Where will your copy of Grapevine end up? Why don’t you send us your photos to: lampetergrapevine@gmail.com and we’ll publish them in future issues. Eds. Here’s one that’s a little bit different … Can you work out where this picture was taken?

GRAPEVINE no. 44, November 2016 Post: c/o Victoria Hall, Bryn Road, Lampeter, Ceredigion SA48 7EE Email: lampetergrapevine@gmail.com Published by: Transition Llambed Development Trust, Victoria Hall, Bryn Road, Lampeter, SA48 7EE

Croeso / Welcome to another issue of the Grapevine ... Now the question, as ever, is where to begin … I often find it difficult to get started on these editorials, as I do not consider myself to be a writer in any shape or form - so I have to really ‘reach out’ into the unknown to uncover the inspiration for what is to come. Sometimes I just have to start writing, anything and everything, and eventually something tangible begins to appear, with connections being made that incredibly slot everything into place. So, here goes ... We decided to let the Grapevine really promote what it’s good

It never ceases to amaze me how much is going on around us, that we may not initially be aware of; how many interest groups we are actually in touch with; the huge variety of opportunities on our doorstep and the fabulous people who make them all happen. Because very often these are folk who don’t make it obvious that they are in need, people locally don’t realise how great the need is for this service. Local churches and other organisations are generous in giving food and some money, but we are always in need of more. According to figures from Ceredigion County Council, 37% of households are living in poverty (this means their household income is less than 60% of UK average income). Although employment is reasonably high in Ceredigion, rates of pay are low – at £488 a week, compared with £546 as the UK average - and 17% of people living in Ceredigion are ‘over-indebted’. This means they are overly burdened by bills and credit or have fallen far behind in repaying loans – while the UK average is 16%. As a result a large number of families have found themselves in financial difficulties and have needed the help of the Lampeter Food Bank.

Amgueddfa Llambed / Lampeter Museum The Museum will be closed after the last Saturday in October, so you may just have a day or two left to visit and see this year’s collections. It is remarkable where our visitors have come from, and although many local people have been in more than once, - it may be that some have not paid a visit to see the local history that is displayed there. As space is limited, collections will be changed over the winter months in order to promote local interest. The Museum needs funding in order to carry out this continued work, and we appeal to the public and local businesses to reach out and become ‘friends’ of the museum. Application forms through hanesllambed.org.uk and everyone donating a minimum of £10 to the Museum Fund will be acknowledged on the Museum website. Yvonne Davies

Jottings

Every now and then I find myself returning to the nature writings of those who lived generations ago; they never cease to give me pleasure and inspiration however many times I read them. The two I mention

here are both American. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) lived for two years a solitary life at Walden Pond, Massachusetts. In his celebrated book, “Walden, or Life in the

Woods”, his evocative descriptions of the natural world through the seasons have never been surpassed. This simple quotation from his writing: “We can

never have enough of nature” is my excuse (not that I need one!) for going on yet another nature ramble. Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) lived and worked in Wisconsin. His book of essays on conservation, “A

Sand Country Almanac”, is a modern classic. Here is a timely quotation from that work:

“Like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began to do away with them". The works of both these essayists are still in print, still read and appreciated by those who like to reach back through time for inspiration and encouragement. David Price 6

Easy Peasy Apple Squeezy Saturday 15 October saw the busiest Lampeter Apple Day to date. A new scratter and apple press made a debut appearance, and we lost track of the number of apples squeezed and pints of apple juice produced. The Long Wood Community Orchard stand created a lot of interest, (see below) and Organic Fresh Foods is now officially replaced by Watson & Pratt's, there was even a ribbon cutting!

Partner Cylch Caron yn estyn allan i gymuned Tregaron

Cylch Caron partner reaching out to Tregaron Community

Daeth cymuned Tregaron a'r ardal gyfagos at ei gilydd ddydd Mawrth, 13 Medi i gwrdd â partner datblygu Cylch Caron a benodwyd yn ddiweddar, Cymdeithas Tai Canolbarth Cymru. Roedd y digwyddiad hefyd yn gyfle i weld dyluniadau cysyniad cychwynnol y pensaer ar gyfer y datblygiad. Dechreuodd y diwrnod gyda swyddogion Cyngor Sir Ceredigion a Cymdeithas Tai Canolbarth Cymru yn ymweld â Dr Sion James ym meddygfa teulu Tregaron. Ymunodd Roofus, masgot Cymdeithas Tai Canolbarth Cymru, swyddogion i gwrdd â disgyblion cynradd ac uwchradd Ysgol Henry Richard ac ymweld a Canolfan Adnoddau Bryntirion ac Ysbyty Tregaron. Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Catherine Hughes, Cadeirydd Bwrdd Rhanddeiliaid Cylch Caron, "Roedd hwn yn ddiwrnod i'r gymuned i gwrdd â Cymdeithas Tai Canolbarth Cymru, o blant lleol, i'r meddyg teulu, i drigolion Canolfan Adnoddau Bryntirion ac Ysbyty Tregaron a'r gymuned ehangach." Y noson hynny, cynhaliwyd digwyddiad ymgysylltu â'r gymuned, a helpodd gasglu safbwyntiau pobl leol, sefydliadau, defnyddwyr gwasanaeth a busnesau ar y prosiect. Bydd y wybodaeth a gasglwyd yn helpu i lywio'r Asesiad Effaith Iechyd ar gyfer y prosiect, gan sicrhau, lle bynnag y bo modd, y bydd y cyfleuster yn rhoi’r cyfle i wella iechyd a lles y defnyddwyr gwasanaeth, staff a'r gymuned ehangach. Ychwanegodd y Cynghorydd Catherine Hughes, "roedd y digwyddiad gyda'r nos yn Ysgol Henry Richard yn gyfle i fod yn rhan o'r sgwrs ynglŷn â sut y bydd Cylch Caron yn darparu gwasanaethau cynaliadwy Tai, Iechyd, Gofal Cymdeithasol ar gyfer ein cymuned. Roedd hefyd yn gyfle i gael golwg gyntaf o luniadau cysyniad cychwynnol y pensaer." Bydd gwaith yn awr yn symud ymlaen i ddatblygu'r cysyniad o adeilad Cylch Caron. Dywedodd Shane Perkins, Prif Weithredwr Cymdeithas Tai Canolbarth Cymru, "Rydym yn falch iawn o gael ein dewis fel partner ar gyfer y prosiect pwysig hwn ar gyfer Tregaron a byddwn yn defnyddio'r adborth a gafwyd i ddatblygu dyluniad y cynllun. Rydym yn disgwyl i ymgynghori'n ehangach â'r gymuned unwaith y bydd y darluniau cysyniad wedi cael eu datblygu ymhellach."

The community of Tregaron and the surrounding area came together on Tuesday, 13 September to meet the recently appointed Cylch Caron development partner, Mid Wales Housing Association. The event also provided an opportunity to view the architect’s preliminary concept drawings for the development. The day began with Ceredigion County Council and Mid Wales Housing Association officers visiting Dr Sion James at Tregaron GP surgery. Roofus, Mid Wales Housing Association’s mascot, joined officers to meet primary and secondary pupils from Ysgol Henry Richard and visited Bryntirion Resource Centre and Tregaron Hospital. Councillor Catherine Hughes, Chair of the Cylch Caron Stakeholder Board said, “This was a day for the community to meet Mid Wales Housing Association, from local children, to the GP, to the residents of Bryntirion Resource Centre and Tregaron Hospital and the wider community.” A community engagement event was held in the evening, which helped gather the views of local people, organisations, service users and businesses on the project. The information gathered will help inform a Health Impact Assessment for the project, ensuring that wherever possible, the facility will have an opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of the service users, staff and the wider community. Councillor Catherine Hughes added, “the evening event held at Ysgol Henry Richard was an opportunity to be part of the conversation as to how Cylch Caron will provide sustainable Health, Social Care and Housing services for our community. It was also an opportunity to have a first view of the architect’s preliminary concept drawings.” Work will now progress to develop the concept of the Cylch Caron building. Shane Perkins, Chief Executive of Mid-Wales Housing Association, said, “We are thrilled to be selected as a partner for this important project for Tregaron and will use the feedback received to develop the scheme design. We expect to consult more widely with the community once the concept drawings have been developed further.”

The 2016 Season at New Quay Honey Farm Another summer has come to an end, and with it the honey production of our honeybees. Honeybees are most productive in warm and sunny conditions; in the cold they’ll just huddle together in the hive for warmth unfortunately this means we’ve not had a great deal of honey this year… Beekeeping is a constant flux of honey production and you just have to go with the flow – as it were. Our wildflower honey comes from the huge variety of wildflowers we’re lucky enough to have here in Ceredigion, the hives are nestled into fields and by hedgerows in groups of up to twelve. It produces a golden and delicious honey that we have in a clear or set variety. The mountain and heather honeys come from the Brecon Beacons, the hives are brought back here to the farm for the honey to be extracted. The different flowers and climate affect the flavour and the colour of the honey. The mountain honey comes from the range of wildflowers that blossom over the season, producing a lighter and more floral honey. September and October brings out the small pink heather flowers, producing a dark, distinctive honey. Honey extraction when your honey is raw and untreated is quite a simple process. The frames (that sit in the hive and get filled with honey) are brought back to the farm, the wax capping is scraped off and the frame gets spun in a honey extractor to fling all the honey out of the uncapped cells. The honey is then collected, filtered for hive debris and poured into jars. Simple! Not only have we got honey extraction on the go, we’re also bottling mead that has been fermenting for the last six months ready to be left to age in the bottle. In mead, the sugar for the alcohol comes from the honey – not a grape in sight. Our exhibition, shop and tea room close at the end of October, and the Honey Farm shuts to the public however we’re still here behind closed doors getting honey and mead jarred and bottled, labeling stock and packing orders for all our wholesale customers. We’re also here answering emails and packing online orders right up to Christmas. (Including a new selection of hampers – which we’re really excited about!) Thanks for everyone who has paid us a visit or ordered online, we are forever grateful for your interest in what we do, so thank you – and see you next year! Remember you can still order those last few Christmas presents on our website. www.thehoneyfarm.co.uk or drop us an email at enquiries@thehoneyfarm.co.uk. Polly Willis 11

Mr Urdd Mr Urdd visited us to promote all the wonderful opportunities that the Urdd offers to all children in Wales. To welcome him, the children all wore white, red and green, the colours of the Urdd. Long Wood Years 1 and 2 have enjoyed the opportunity of working outdoors in the fantastic setting of Long Wood community woodland. During the visits they have learnt the importance of food and water to survive as well as the value of friends, family and having a place where we can call home. All children thoroughly enjoyed the den making activities as well as making sun catchers with the beautiful autumn leaves and finishing the day with toasting marshmallows around the fire. A big thank you to Jenny and Polly for such a wonderful experience. Roald Dahl Key stage 2 children enjoyed a one man show by Tudur Phillips from the ‘Mewn Cymeriad’ theatre company as a part of our celebrations to th commemorate the 100 birthday of the world famous children’s author Roald Dahl. During the performance the children got to meet various exciting characters from the Roald Dahl’s books. Potions Pupils in year 5 and 6 have been learning about ‘Potions’ during this half term. To enhance the learning experience they enjoyed a visit to the Botanical Gardens of Wales, where they participated in a ‘Medicine and Plants’ workshop and explored the Physicians of Myddfai and Apothecary display. They then moved on to Llyn y Fan Fach which involved a mile and a half walk to the lake and to hear about the legend of ‘The Lady of the Lake’. It is said that the Physicians of Myddfai were direct descendents of the ‘Lady of the Lake’. The day was finished with a visit to the village of Myddfai itself where they saw the church and gravestone of the direct descendant of the Physicians of Myddfai. A thoroughly interesting and informative day was had by all. 13

Welsh Punk Rock - An Interview with MELLT. Welsh Punk rock group, “Mellt” burst onto the Welsh music scene back in 2012, hailing from the sunny shores of Aberystwyth. This three piece band composed of Glyn James, Jake Hodges and Ellis Walker are one of the most exciting punk bands to ever grace the Welsh music scene. I interviewed the band straight from the Mellt mobile, on a Friday night as the trio were set to play the Victoria Hall in Lampeter. “What was the appeal for you to join Mellt? Was it a situation where you needed members, or were you all originally friends?” G - “Well, me and Ellis had been playing in a band called the Gwirddfolwyr, a bit of a mouthful, but then after that two of the boys in the band left, and we taught Jake how to play the drums, just because he was our mate, and he’d always come to the gigs anyways.” “And how did you decide on the name change from The Gwirddfolwyr to Mellt?” G - “It’s just because nobody could really pronounce The Gwirddfolwyr, we’d turn up to gigs and even the presenters couldn’t say our name. So we just thought, **** it, we’ll change the name.” E- “Yeah, we’d actually get people coming up to us, saying we needed to introduce ourselves.” “And since Mellt are a Welsh band, it’s natural for you all to sing in Welsh. But, would you ever consider singing or writing in English?” E- “Well, we already do, the situation at the moment is that, just over half our stuff is in English. But, we do a lot of Welsh gigs, and that stuff then tends to get filmed and put up on social media sites. Welsh TV don’t necessarily want to film English songs.” “So, how do you find that the audience react to you when you sing in English? Any differently, considering not everybody understand or speaks Welsh.” G - “Well, the only time we have to play all in Welsh is at the Eisteddfod really, but everybody loves it there, so it’s fine, and everywhere else then we do a bilingual set, and we’ve been doing that for ages now.”

E- “Yeah, for around 2 years now we’ve been singing bilingually, but before that we were a Welsh band.” G - “When we play in Cardiff, it’s fine, everyone enjoys.” “And so, you’ve got your new single, “Sain Becso”, which has a fast-paced, Punk sound to it, in comparison to older songs, do you find that Mellt are more comfortable playing Punk, or are you still experimenting with your sound?” E- “Well, I think that we’re always experimenting with our sound, it’s more like we go through phases where we listen to different music, and then we reflect on what we’ve been listening to, but it all depends on how we feel really.” G - “More energy in the sound, has become an important thing for us, especially when we play live sets.” E- “Because, when we record, we can kind of do what we want. But, when we play live it’s important to get that reaction from the crowd.” “So, who are you guys into now?” G - “I wouldn’t say there’s one specific sound.” E- “Yeah, we all listen to a lot of different music.” J - “It’s all quite broad at the minute.” E- “The punk phase came from listening to bands like The Clash. But, then we got into Mac DeMarco, and so we began writing not slower songs, but we used weirder chords, and we listened to Richard Hell and the Voidoids, we’ve got stuff like Weezer in the CD player right now (laughs) so we’ve all been listening to that.” “So what is the songwriting process like for Mellt, where do you find the inspiration, coming from Aberystwyth, do you find it difficult?” (laughs) G - “I wouldn’t say that, no.” E- “It usually comes from one of us coming up with a chord progression, and kind of expanding it. Coming up with chord riffs, it just kind of happens.” “It just flows off one another” E- “Yeah, sometimes (cue the laughter) “So, what are the aims and aspirations for Mellt? (I tell the guys that this is always a necessary question to ask) Are you looking to release albums, more songs?” J - “It sounds like Welsh bacc now” (laughs) 14

E- “Yeah, we’re working on a Welsh album now at the moment, and we’re going into the studio tomorrow. But, after that we’re going to be doing an English EP, so it should hopefully be around 6 songs. We want to make it a beef EP.” J - “Beef EP” (laughs) E- “We’ve actually got a grant from the Horizons launchpad fund that we’re going to use for that EP, and to get a plugger as well, so we’ll plug that then. A radio plugger, so hopefully, watch this space.” “And since you are a three piece band, do you tend to find a struggle creating that beefy sound?” G - “No, I think it’s easier, we just use pedals to make up for it.” J - “We’ve just been stocking up on pedals.” “Would you ever consider expanding the band?” J - “Yeah, actually we’re looking for bass. E- We’re looking for a new bass player for the band, yeah.” (laughs) G - “We’re looking for the right guy.” J - “Or gal.” E- “Preferably, actually. So, if any of you are reading this, then Mellt are looking for a bass player.” “Finally then to finish it off, what are 3 words to describe your band?” E- “Oh, god no” b- “No, I don’t” (more laughter) E- “Glyn, have you got anything? You’re the man behind the operation” G - “I never know what to say. I can be like Bob Dylan and just not answer. What do other people say?” I shared a few examples with Glyn of what other bands say, to which he replied with. G - “I guess - pretentious, egotistical and cocky.” (More laughter to end the interview.) Another interview all wrapped up, you can catch Mellt performing alongside fellow Indie band Estrons in November, in the meantime Mellt are often seen in their usual Cardiff haunts, playing regular spots at Clwb Ifor Bach. Watch this space. Written by

Karen’s Creative Compendium 019 Poetry rarely comes more sweet and sickly than Brenda’s The Enemy, truly topical as politicians debate a sugar tax and our diabetes time-bomb. Pleased too, to welcome some lovely contributions from yet more new writers alongside our regulars, with Polly Phemus keeping one eye on our pages and more from members of the Merry Makers women’s group. The Makers celebrated National Poetry Day by picking up on it’s ’Message’ theme to write pieces on topics randomly selected from a pile of suggestions - great fun! Also, this month brought an editorial challenge with regard to language. As these pages are part of a family publication and read by children and adults of all ages, there are certain words and topics which I will not include, irrespective of their context and artistic integrity. This is simply an editorial policy adopted for KCC and not a criticism of any author, work or viewpoint. There are plenty of pieces I have written that I would never permit here and work by new and established writers I have published elsewhere that are littered with expletives. Sometimes though, the line is very grey and I just have to make a judgement and hope not to upset anyone, writers or readers! Seems to be working so far. Next month will complete our second year of KCC, so please keep those contributions coming, Pob Hwyl, Karen

The Enemy by Brenda Old Gone the comfort of sweet bread and milk. Butter and sugar sandwiches of childhood. Often secretly eaten by grown-ups. No more the tang of lemon meringue of pancakes drizzled with Golden Syrup. Worse still, smothered in white refined sugar. The cloying sweetness disguised by the tart of squeezed lemon. Now those crystals are bitter pills sharing the blame for our many ills. But are they at fault or can we learn a little of what we yearn need not be bad? Too much can kill.

by Anita Harrison Nothing works the way it used to.Ribs ache, eyesight dims. Acid reflux threatens explosion on those nearby. Memory fluctuates leaving me floundering when those who say "Hell" in the street are replaced by giant question marks. What IS your name? But, the reason I'm here Doctor is this. When will my boiler work again? I lay awake waiting for that gurgling rush of heat. I watch the TV late at night - but still no flush. He gets sarcastic and taunts "You're too old gal. Your boiler's knackered." But I'm hoping Doctor that today, you'll prescribe a pill that will fire me up - even if it's only one more time.

One morning I was lying down minding my own business when life came by rode right over me. I was still lying down seething, when life came back the other way left me lying down convalescing. Just about then a passer-by caught my eye gave some good advice. She said: “Why don’t you lie at the side of the road.” Well, I was lying down thinking, when life came by on the afternoon trip.

Rebecca Bamsey, Llywydd Llambed. Mae yna rywbeth am ddechrau blwyddyn academaidd newydd sy'n eithaf tebyg i ŵyl; mae positifrwydd ym mhob man, mae grwpiau o ffrindiau'n ymgasglu i gael hwyl a chwerthin, a chaiff sbarc tref prifysgol fach Llambed ei ailgynnau gan brysurdeb. Ni allaf helpu teimlo ton o hapusrwydd wrth groesawu wynebau cyfarwydd myfyrwyr sy’n dychwelyd ar ôl egwyl haf hir, gan fy mod yn gwybod eu bod yn agosach fyth at gyrraedd eu nod. At hynny, yr hyn sy’n fy llenwi â brwdfrydedd yw’r holl wynebau ac enwau nad ydw i’n gyfarwydd â nhw, ddim eto. Mae myfyrwyr y flwyddyn gyntaf, sydd yn aml iawn yn gadael adref am y tro cyntaf ac yn dechrau taith o hunan-ddarganfyddiad yn ogystal â darganfyddiad daearyddol ac addysgol yn gwneud yr amser yma o’r flwyddyn yn llawn boddhad i’r rheiny ohonom sy’n helpu i siapio’u profiad. Ond, pwy ydy’r rheiny sy’n helpu i siapio profiad myfyrwyr yma yn Llambed? Llu o bobl, gan gynnwys yr academyddion, staff y brifysgol, staff cynorthwyol, Undeb y Myfyrwyr ac wrth gwrs, eu cymheiriaid. Ond mae’r hyn sydd gan fyfyrwyr yma yn Llambed, yn rhywbeth arbennig, nad yw mor gyffredin mewn prifysgolion eraill, mwy. Yma, yn Llambed, mae’r gymuned a’r brifysgol yn byw law yn llaw â’i gilydd, ac mae’r naill yn ffynnu ar ryngweithio gyda’r llall. Yn bersonol, rwy’n frwdfrydig iawn dros ddyfnhau’r berthynas hon rhwng y brifysgol a’r dref drwy annog myfyrwyr i ymgysylltu â chymuned ehangach Llambed, a chymryd rhan weithredol ynddi. Byddaf yn gweithio gyda sefydliad gwirfoddolwyr lleol, sef CAVO, fel bod myfyrwyr yn gallu cyfoethogi eu portffolio gwaith, rhoi rhywbeth yn ôl i’r gymuned a bod yn rhan o rywbeth mwy na dim ond bywyd y brifysgol; hynny yw, bod yn rhan o Lambed. At hyn, carwn wahodd y gymuned leol i'r brifysgol ac i ddefnyddio'r cyfleusterau a'r corff myfyrwyr i gryfhau'r rhwymau, felly mae croeso cynnes i chi gysylltu â mi yn Undeb y Myfyrwyr gydag unrhyw syniadau neu gyfleoedd. Hoffwn fanteisio ar y cyfle hwn i sôn am ba mor wych oedd Ffair y Glas eleni, ac i ddiolch i chi gyd am ddod. Bu’r diwrnod yn arbennig, a gobeithiaf ei fod wedi rhoi blas i’r flwyddyn gyntaf ar y pethau gwych a nodedig sydd gan Lambed i’w cynnig i chi, ac wedi aildanio cof y rheiny ohonoch sy’n dychwelyd. Felly, i gloi, hoffwn estyn croeso/croeso’n ôl cynnes iawn i'r holl fyfyrwyr ac ailadrodd pa mor arbennig yw’r dref

the benefits of living in such a small community; find out what your neighbours name is, ask is there something going on in the Victoria Town Hall on the weekend, and buy produce locally. After all, the more you give, the more you get!!! Thank you very much and please contact me on 01570 422619, or Facebook: Rebecca Lampeter Pres, if you have any enquiries.

Rebecca Bamsey, Lampeter President. There is something about the start of an academic year that reminds me of being quite like a festival; positivity is aplenty, groups of friends huddle around laughing, and the spark of this small university town of Lampeter becomes reignited with activity. I can’t help but feel a surge of happiness at welcoming back those familiar faces of returning students after a long summer break, as I know that their goal is that much closer to becoming achieved. Moreover, what enthuses me greatly are all the faces and names that I’m not familiar with, quite yet. The first year students who are, quite often, flying the nest for the first time and beginning a journey of geographical, educational and self discovery make this time of year so very satisfying for those of us who help shape their experience. But, who are those that help shape students experience here at Lampeter? They have the academics, university staff, support staff, the Students’ Union and, of course, their peers. But what students here at Lampeter have is something that is not so widely common in other, bigger universities. Here, at Lampeter, the community and university is very much coexistent with one another, and both thrive from interacting together. I am personally very enthusiastic about deepening this relationship between university and town by encouraging students to participate and engage with the wider community of Lampeter. I will be working with the local volunteer organisation CAVO so that students are able to enhance their work portfolio, give back something to the community and become a part of something more than just university life; to be a part of Lampeter. Furthermore, I want to invite the local community into the university and to utilise the facilities and student body to strengthen the bond, so please feel free to contact me in the Students’ Union with any ideas or opportunities. I would like to mention how thrilled I am with how wonderful the Freshers Fair turned out to be, thank you all for coming along, the day went superbly, and I hope this gave first years a taste of the remarkable quirks and appealing things Lampeter has to offer you, and refreshed the memories of those of you who are returning. Therefore, to finish, I would like to give students a tremendously warm welcome/ welcome back, and to reiterate what a spectacular place we live in, so employ

Can Plaid Cymru reach out to Valleys voters?

change that they have been for years. They need to show that they are the only credible party in Wales willing to take the fight to the Tories and challenge austerity. Plaid need to be a strong voice against listings of foreign workers, tuition fees, PIP (Disability Payments) cuts and many more backward Conservative policies that would damage Wales. Plaid need to be the alternative to austerity-lite Blairism and the infighting that is Corbyn’s Labour Party; as much as Carwyn Jones attempts to distance himself from Jeremy Corbyn, Welsh Labour will always be connected, in the mind of voters, to Corbyn’s leadership. It is arguable that this was the largest reason behind Welsh Labour’s vote share dropping by 7% for the Assembly Elections. I believe that Plaid must continue with the leadership of Leanne Wood. She was born and raised in the valleys, she represents the voters Plaid needs to gain, non Welsh speaking, diverse and passionate for progress. Plaid has made great progress under her leadership; I believe that they would fall backwards without her. Then, there is the elephant in the room, Brexit. How should Plaid Cymru handle Brexit? The valleys emphatically voted to Leave; yet, many Welsh speaking, Plaid voting, areas voted to Remain, notably Ceredigion and Gwynedd. Leanne Wood walks on a tightrope, on one side there are the Pro-EU strongholds; the other, those who have been left behind by globalisation, who’ve been betrayed by successive governments and have seen their communities torn apart by austerity; all of which has accumulated into a protest vote, a vote for change. Plaid Cymru need to acknowledge the factors behind the Brexit vote, and act on them. But, they also must defend the valleys, the farmers, the businesses, by campaigning for Wales to remain a member of the single market and for Wales to have a seat at the Brexit negotiating table. Plaid have already made headway with this, they proposed a motion in the Assembly for Wales to continue its membership of the Single Market; without Liberal Democrat or Labour support, the motion failed. The question we must ask is this: Is Plaid Cymru more than a protest party that can never lead a government? Plaid Cymru is standing at a crossroads, where all choices have consequences. But, they also have a historic opportunity; Labour is in the midst of its largest crisis since the 1980’s, the Liberal Democrats are nowhere to be seen and Theresa May’s right wing agenda is alienating many Welsh voters. Plaid Cymru must stay true to their principles. They must be the credible, hopeful, progressive, anti-austerity party that they’ve always been. Then, we may see “a new dawn” break across Wales. Cyffin

After winning the Rhondda mere months ago, Leanne Wood declared that “a new dawn is about to break in Wales”. Yet, Plaid Cymru made no other gains that night. For years, Plaid Cymru have been confident of a breakthrough, yet none has come. What are they doing wrong, how can they become a real challenger to Labour? Plaid Cymru’s traditional heartlands have been through rural, west Wales; the traditional Welsh speaking strongholds. For the party to grow, and be a real challenge to Labour, Plaid Cymru needs to take seats in the valleys, the former industrial areas of the South East of Wales. Plaid Cymru cannot grow, or survive, by being contained to its rural heartlands. After Wales narrowly voted for a Welsh Assembly in 1997, the buoyed Plaid Cymru did exceptionally well in the first assembly election. In the areas that voted Yes to the Assembly, Plaid managed to win an unprecedented number of seats. They won 17 seats (out of 60), with 30% of the vote. Many of these seats were won in the valleys. We’ve never seen this many Plaid Cymru Assembly Members since. The following election saw Plaid’s vote share drop by 10%, they lost 5 seats. Plaid Cymru joined Labour to form the One Wales government, while successful; Plaid weren’t able to take credit for many critical policies. The 2011 election was also a disappointing result. They lost the position of Official Opposition, even after the decisive referendum in favour of granting further powers to the assembly. This posed a significant threat to the “Party of Wales”. So where are Plaid now? The 2016 election can be spun both positively and negatively for Plaid. On one hand, they failed to capitalise on Labour’s unpopularity and sliding vote share; but, on the other hand, they were the only party (bar UKIP) to increase their vote share and took a seat in the valleys, something that they absolutely must replicate across the valleys to become the largest party in Wales. There was a swing to Plaid Cymru in the valleys. Blaenau Gwent saw a 27.73% swing from Labour to Plaid, the Rhondda saw a 24.19% swing Labour to Plaid and Cardiff West saw an 11.71% swing. These are all impressive results, but Plaid Cymru were unable to capitalise in many close seats, such as Llanelli and Blaenau Gwent. Plaid lack the final push in the valleys to really challenge Labour nationally. What can Plaid do to break the red block in the South of Wales? They need to continue to be the hopeful, positive voice for 27

Game Designers focus on creating and developing new games that will interest all the gamers around the world. When making a game the designer must think of many points such as, the controls used, voice actors, what the game consists of and defining all the core elements. Communication is key for game designers so they can explain to their development team, who create the art assets and code the game. With gaming designers they must fulfil certain roles; for example game designers must be fluent with 2D and 3D graphics and animation packages. Another role a game designer should have is developed storytelling and narrative skills. Lastly game designers should have the most important skill which is being imaginative and creative thinking so games come easily. For example famous game designers Riot Games have created a world wide famous game, League of Legends. Riot Games has not run out of ideas with

this game. There are over 20 unique characters that create a diverse strategy for each game played online. Riot have included two game modes online and A.I battles. There are millions of gamers that play League of Legends. There are competitions called ‘Midnight Marathons’ where gamers can see their favourite teams compete against each other. There is also a con for it which is also called ‘Midnight Marathon’ by the title the marathon starts at midnight. Another famous game produced by Game Freak is Pokémon. Pokémon has 7 generations created ranging from the first Pokémon games called ‘Red’ and ‘Green’ to the latest ‘Omega Ruby’ and ‘Alpha Sapphire’. Pokémon has many great ideas with their games and are advancing with each game. They are now creating a game in 3D which gives a nicer vibe. Adrian

Reaching out to Paralympics The Paralympics are when disabled people take part in the Olympics but its called Paralympics and only disabled people take part. The Paralympics were made because the people that had disabilities wanted to take part in the Olympics, so Paralympics were made so they weren't left out. The Paralympics started in 1960 in Rome, Italy. The person that invented the Paralympics was Ludwig Guttmann, he organized a sports competition which involved World War 2 veterans that had spinal injuries. The Summer and Winter Paralympic Games are the ultimate international competitions for world class athletes with a disability. They inspire other people to do it because of Olympics and maybe because they like sport. Amelia

When did the Syria war happen? The Syrian war has been on for a little over 5 years. What’s happened in the war? The Syrian people were unhappy with the government. As part of the Arab Spring they protested in an attempt to overthrow the government, BUT, the government attacked the protesters, and eventually this led to a vicious civil war. 5 years on, we’ve seen atrocities on both sides - chemical weapons used on normal people, civilians targeted and more. What can we do? Give food, clothes, shelter and our support to the civilians of the war. Why should we help? Do you want to see people die? Children, families, innocents are dying daily. This is wrong. How we can help? Donating to Save The Children, UNICEF and Oxfam are all excellent options. Naim

By Leigh The RSPCA is a charity dedicated to helping abandoned and abused animals. On an average of every 30 seconds, someone in England or Wales calls the RSPCA for help. In 2015, they received just over 1 million phone calls. An example of one of the many RSPCA’s stories is a cat stabbing. A 43-year-old, unemployed man stabbed a cat after drinking 15 pints of alcohol. He claimed that he was craving chicken at the time, and after the cat, Toby, scratched him, he said that that was it. He stabbed the cat 9 times with a carving knife. The man phoned the police saying he stabbed the cat and needed a vet. He also said he had drunk 15 pints before stabbing poor Toby. The police called the RSPCA for assistance. The police found the man covered in blood with the five inch carving knife used to stab the cat. RSPCA inspector Mick Darling took Toby to the vet where he was given pain relief and was sedated. After his fur was clipped, they found multiple wounds on his left and right sides of his body. Police took the cat into possession and signed the cat over to the RSPCA, where he fully recovered and was put up for rehoming. The Great Fire of London The Great Fire of London was a disaster that started on Pudding Lane. Pudding Lane is in the east side of London near London Bridge. When the baker, Thomas Farriner, who left bread cooking overnight in a bakery oven by accident. The fire started on 2 September 1666 and ended 4 days later on the 5 September 1666. There had been a ten months drought before the fire so everything was very dry, it didn’t help that the houses were made out of wood and straw. Also the warehouses contained hay, wood, lead etc. There was melted lead running down some streets during the fire, making the streets difficult to walk on. They started to pull down houses on the third day to protect the tower of London, because the tower held gunpowder, so if the fire reached the tower the whole city would have gone kaboom! London did not have a fire brigade, so the Kings brother, Henry Stuart, told random people to fight the fire and if they refused then he would beat them up. The lord mayor of London, Thomas Bloodworth, wasn’t much help he was told several times about the fire during the night and went back to sleep! He even said “It’s so small a Woman might pee it out”. The lord mayor did nothing to help in this crisis, he just panicked and left it up to the rest to sort out. After the city had been extinguished the next problem was to rebuild the ruined city of London. The person who rebuilt it was: Christopher Wren. Christopher had a dream to build the cathedral with a dome. It took him around 30 years to complete but St. Pauls Cathedral still stands proud today, just like the modern city of London we all enjoy today. The Great fire was a tragedy however, after the fire the people reached out to start again for a new life, a new beginning, without the fear of fire where the people can relax and enjoy their life together. Georgette

Lampeter Youth Theatre have been very busy lately. We recently performed at the Long Wood Community Woodland Forest Fair, giving the audience a sneak peek of our up coming December show. The kids were fantastic and really impressed us all. On the back of this performance I can say with every confidence that 'Nelson's Navy' will be a fantastic show. Tickets will go on sale very soon. Come along (3rd Dec) and show these hard working kids your support. But before showtime we have a Halloween party to invite you all to. We'll have a spooky disco, games and a special surprise on the night. All children must be companied by an adult. We'll have a tea & coffee area for the adults. There will cupcakes baked by the Lampeter Brownies and other party snacks too. We'll have glitter tattoos, apple bobbing and a few other treats in store. Hope to see you there. Tracey Reynolds

COEDWIG GYMUNEDOL LONG WOOD COMMUNITY WOODLAND With this month’s theme of “Reaching out” it seems the perfect opportunity to highlight the success of the Long Wood Forest Fair event in September. In one day we managed to reach out to our local MP, Mark Williams, 20 volunteers, 3 staff, 9 directors, over 20 stallholders, a local landowner, 8 organisations providing demonstration events, and an estimated 600 visitors from the local community and much further afield. Impressive eh! The day included demonstrations and performances from local arts groups and bands, including the celebrated Côr Cwmann A’r Cylch; as well as workshops from local synergetic businesses, crafts persons and community groups; Tir Coed’s VINE project celebrated the successful completion of 3 years of VINE activities at Long Wood,

Wood that they enjoy. “At a very hard time in my life, Long Wood reached out to me through a friend. A great friend of mine was already volunteering at Long Wood and suggested that I have a go. I was apprehensive but thought I’d give it a try. Quite honestly, I have not looked back since. I so enjoy being in the woods and working in such a physical way. The best thing though has been the support network of friends I have made. We have such a laugh together and support each other through our difficulties in life as well as generally putting the world to rights over tea and biscuits. Personally I don’t honestly know what I’d do without volunteering at Long Wood, I love it!” Another volunteer writes: “After only a few Wednesdays in Long Wood, I can understand why some people have been volunteering here regularly for years. It’s easy to make yourself a little place in this group, with everybody making sure that you feel comfortable, included and part of the team. Reaching out is a two way thing, one has to take the first step, show and interest and show willing and the group will do the rest making one feel right at home within a couple of weeks”. It’s certainly been a busy month at Long Wood and the work doesn’t stop, even though the nights are beginning to draw in! If you would like to get involved at Long Wood, perhaps as a volunteer or maybe you have other ideas of activities that we could base in the woodlands, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Andrew Gajlikowski

with traditional woodcraft activities, storytelling and music. The day was a resounding success, due in no small part to the combined efforts of Long Wood volunteers, staff and directors. Whilst on the theme of ‘Reaching Out’, and as a break from our usual updates, we have ‘reached out’ to our volunteers from our regular Woodland Wednesday sessions to explain what it is about volunteering at Long

Lampeter’s Women’s Institutes Celebrate together Young and older members of two Lampeter Women’s Institutes came together for a celebratory afternoon tea on the 22 July this year. Lampeter Women’s Institute, celebrating their One Hundredth Year, were treated to a birthday lunch of tea and cakes by the Custard Queen’s Women’s Institute, also of Lampeter, at Yr Hedyn Mwstard/ The Mustard Seed Café. The ladies had a wonderful afternoon, chatting together about their groups, the history of the Women’s Institute and gossip about Lampeter, family and themselves. Some of the ladies met for the first time and became

great friends. The two groups run at different times of the week; Lampeter W.I. running on Wednesday morning and the Custard Queen’s on Sunday evening, picking up those ladies who cannot get to the Lampeter Wednesday group for work or other commitments. Custard Queen’s toasted the Lampeter W.I. with birthday wishes and a vow to meet again, seconded by the Lampeter W.I. ladies. Lampeter W.I. meet at St. Thomas' Chapel, Lampeter, 3rd Wednesday of 30

Ysgol Bro Pedr

BRO PEDR DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY AS INNOVATIVE AS EVER Following on from last year’s successes at the WJEC Innovation Awards, a record seven students from Ysgol Bro Pedr were invited by the WJEC to exhibit their exemplar D&T work at this year’s prestigious event held in the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff. Mr Griffiths, the head of the Design and Technology Department, commented, “We are very pleased that the department continues to go from strength to strength, we have a strong team of staff and pupils who regularly bring credit to the department and the school. 70% of our D&T pupils achieved an A* or A grade at GCSE.” Those exhibiting at GCSE level were, Twm Ebsworth and his ‘Blue tooth’ integrated lectern, Daniel Thomas’s adaptable ergonomic lectern and Liam Morgan’s Stylish portable Lectern with amplified circuit and 3D printed components. Our representative at AS level was Iwan Evans for his light stick for people with disabilities. Iwan had identified early in his research that certain people with disabilities felt alienated because the public could not recognize or relate to what their disability was. He developed a light system built into a multi-faceted walking stick that could over-come this by helping the public recognize the disability while also doubling up as a safety device for walking at night. The remaining three candidates were Betsan Jones, Sarah Thomas and Gareth Jones all exhibiting their exemplar A level work. Betsan and Sarah’s high quality dresses and accessories were inspired by various decades in design. Betsan’s classic dress was inspired by the 50’s while Sarah’s funky reversible dress was inspired by the ‘70’s. Both had innovative accessories, Betsan’s 3D printed clutch bag was a must for any fashion aficionado, while Sarah’s superbly crafted platform shoes with 3D printed heels were a step above all other work presented. Gareth had created a wheelchair with a kinetic energy recovery system, inspired by F1 racing cars. His system allows the user to charge the many electronic devices needed to stay connected in this modern day and age, without the needing to ‘plug in’. In order to inspire the next generation of designers the department arranged a visit to the exhibition which 59 pupils attended and were highly impressed by the high standard of work on show. As part of the visit, the pupils also visited the IKEA store which is well known for its innovative work in flat pack furniture and modern design. 32

Reaching out overseas!

We were extremely pleased to welcome Alin Sangiovanne from Trevelin, Patagonia to School recently, 50 years since both his aunt and uncle Charlie and Mary Green, also from Patagonia, had been pupils at the School during the 1966/67 academic year. Charlie and Mary lodged with families in the area during their stay and Charlie was heard recently on Shan Cothi’s morning programme on BBC Radio Cymru talking with Elinor (nee Lloyd) who was one of his contemporaries in school and with whom he stayed at her family farm, Garthenor, Llangybi. Alin, who graduated recently as an architect form La Plata University, Buenos Aires, was very interested in the new buildings and proposed developments in school. He will be returning home at the end of October and will be joined on the flight, by two former pupils, Nest Jenkins and Cadi Jones, who will be travelling with twenty members of the Urdd on a humanitarian visit to Patagonia. We wish them well.

PSE

The theme of the year 7 PSE day on 28 September was ‘Crucial Crew’ and we welcomed many agencies including Dyfed Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire Service and the Coastguards to school to lead Year 7 pupils taking part in a workshop workshops and activities. A further PSE day was held for the whole school early in October when other agencies also joined us, including the mid Wales schools education officer from the National Assembly, nurses from Hywel Dda Health Board, Spectrum, Hafan Cymru and the Ceredigion Youth Service.

Caron To launch the partnership between the planned Tregaron Hywel Dda Health Board community and residential centre, Cylch Caron, and Mid Wales Housing, their mascot, Rufus visited all three campuses. A question and answer session was held at the Uwchradd campus for members of healthy school’s council and later in the evening for the community. Rufus, the Mid Wales Housing mascot visiting the Tregaron Cynradd Campus to launch the partnership with Cylch Caron.

Head pupils Siencyn Jones and Ffion Williams presented Alin Sangiovanne with an Ysgol Uwchradd Tregaron school emblem plaque

Charities A coffee morning and cake stall was held on 30 September as part of the Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning Challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care. Thank you to everyone who baked, bought and ate!

Cylch

Steffan, Alun, and Tomos from year 7 certainly enjoyed the cakes in our Macmillan Coffee Morning.

Music

For the fourteenth year in succession pupils from the music department entertained the members of the Tregaron Age Concern Lunch Club at their September meeting in the Talbot Hotel. The members enjoyed vocal and instrumental solo and ensemble items, Mali, Amy, Ffion, Lavinia and Keely entertained the members of the Tregaron and also joined the soloists in singing a few songs. Age Concern Lunch Club recently.

International School Milk Day was held on 28 September.

Special praise was given to Kevin Hazelgrave, year 11 recently for being the individual who has raised the most sponsored walk money for four years in succession. Kevin is very enthusiastic and has raised nearly £2000 in total for Cancer Research at Velindre Hospital, Cardiff. Rhiannon Lewis

Reaching out

I’ve always believed in local community and a world community. Through the medium of dance, Tribal Unity reaches out to women across the globe. In July we danced at the Lampeter Food Festival, sharing our dance with the local community, while on Sunday 25 September, we joined with Rose Barter’s Cardigan Belly Dance and Fit for Life ladies for an afternoon of dance to raise money for Global Hafla for Humanity and raised £170.50. Tribal Unity Wales raises money, swapping clothes, jewellery and costuming within our tribe, to raise money for Wales Air Ambulance. On Saturday 8 October, we danced to the same song as

other members of the ATS® Bellydance family, to share in a WorldWide Flashmob, see our videos online. On Saturday 15 October, Lampeter World of Dance Festival hosted dance styles from around the world in a performance.
