FR Le récital Man Without a Home dessine un parcours marqué par le mouvement, le déplacement et l’autodétermination – un parcours évoluant entre La Nouvelle-Orléans, l’Europe et des paysages intérieurs façonnés par la mémoire, l’héritage et la survie. Le programme proposé ne présente pas un récit unique, mais permet à de nombreuses voix d’exprimer en musique ce que signifie chercher à se sentir chez soi dans des lieux initialement non destinés à vous accueillir.

La première partie du récital se concentre sur le monde extérieur ; elle évoque les systèmes hérités du passé, mais aussi la comédie qu’il faut jouer et les masques qu’il faut porter pour les supporter. Elle fera alterner des pièces signées Mozart, le Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Leoncavallo ou Chaplin, des spirituals et de la musique populaire, et révélera que la beauté, l’ironie et la souffrance coexistent souvent. L’arc dramatique culminera dans la tension entre le fait de s’effondrer et celui de garder une contenance – tension dont la résolution est délibérément laissée en suspens.

Après l’entracte, le récital prendra une tournure plus intime. Des extraits du cycle Nightsongs de H. Leslie Adams constitueront le cœur spirituel et émotionnel de la soirée ; ce cycle s’appuie sur des poèmes qui abordent la foi, la pensée et l’expérience de la dignité selon la perspective intime des Afro-Américains. Des mélodies de Margaret Bonds, Florence Price et Courtney Bryan leur donneront une voix, une visibilité et mettront en avant leur ténacité ; enfin, des compositions de Gershwin, Hailstork, Thiele et Weiss élargiront la portée du concept de « chez-soi » à une dimension communautaire, provisoire et profondément humaine.

Ainsi réunies, ces œuvres esquisseront le portrait musical d’un homme non dépourvu d’origines, mais constamment en mouvement. Et qui considère que son « chez-soi » n’est pas un lieu fixe, mais un acte consistant à chanter, à écouter et à être pleinement dans le présent.

Het recital Man Without a Home pendelt tussen New Orleans, Europa en het innerlijke landschap van persoonlijke herinneringen, afkomst en overleving, en behandelt thema’s als verplaatsing, vervreemding en zichzelf heruitvinden. Het programma behelst niet één enkel verhaal; veeleer vertellen de liederen vanuit diverse muzikale invalshoeken de zoektocht naar een thuisgevoel in oorden die van oorsprong niet voorzien zijn op onze aanwezigheid.

De eerste helft focust op de buitenwereld: de last van het verleden, het vertoon dat nodig is om vol te houden, de maskers die nodig zijn om deze erfenis te verdragen. Werken van Mozart, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Leoncavallo en Chaplin wisselen af met spirituals en populaire muziek, waarbij schoonheid, ironie en lijden naast elkaar bestaan. De dramatische boog bereikt zijn hoogtepunt in de spanning tussen inzinking en beheersing, waarbij een uitweg bewust onthouden wordt.

In het tweede deel richt het recital zich op de innerlijke beleving.

Een selectie uit de cyclus Nightsongs van H. Leslie Adams vormt het spirituele en emotionele middelpunt van de avond, met gedichten over geloof, reflectie en waardigheid, bekeken door het prisma van het innerlijke leven van Afro-­A merikanen. De liederen van Margaret Bonds, Florence Price en Courtney Bryan gaan dan weer over onze stem laten horen, zichtbaarheid en volharding, terwijl composities van Gershwin, Hailstork, Thiele en Weiss een bredere visie van het begrip ‘thuis’ uitdragen en de nadruk leggen op de gemeenschappelijke, voorbijgaande en diepmenselijke aard ervan.

Samen schetsen deze werken een muzikaal portret van iemand die niet zozeer thuisloos, dan wel voortdurend in beweging is; iemand die een thuis niet op een vaste plek vindt, maar in het moment van het zingen, van het luisteren, van het aanwezig zijn.

Le ténor américain Joshua Stewart est né et a grandi à La NouvelleOrléans, où il a étudié au New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, qui a formé d’illustres artistes tels que Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. ou Terence Blanchard. Dès l’âge de douze ans, il sort un album solo, intitulé New Orleans Jazz Prodigy. Il étudie ensuite le chant au Curtis Institute of Music à Philadelphie, puis est admis à l’opéra studio de la Bayerische Staatsoper à Munich.

Parmi les moments forts de sa carrière, citons son interprétation de Jonah (The Time of Our Singing, Kris Defoort) au Theater St. Gallen, ainsi que ses débuts en Rodolfo (La bohème, Puccini) avec le Columbus Symphony, en The Son dans le nouvel opéra Blue de Jeanine Tesori au Seattle Opera, ou encore dans le rôle-titre d’Albert Herring (Britten) au Princeton Festival. De Amerikaanse tenor Joshua Stewart is geboren en getogen in New Orleans, waar hij studeerde aan het New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, dat illustere alumni voortbracht zoals Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. en Terence Blanchard. Al op twaalfjarige leeftijd bracht hij het soloalbum New Orleans Jazz Prodigy uit. Hij studeerde zang aan het Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia en werd vervolgens toegelaten tot de operastudio van de Bayerische Staatsoper in München.

Als voorlopige hoogtepunten in zijn carrière vermelden we zijn vertolking van Jonah (The Time of Our Singing, Kris Defoort) in het Theater St. Gallen, zijn roldebuut als Rodolfo (La bohème, Puccini) met de Columbus Symphony, als The Son in de nieuwe opera Blue van Jeanine Tesori in Seattle Opera en zijn debuut in de titelrol van Albert Herring (Britten) voor het Princeton Festival. Il a fait ses débuts avec le LA Philharmonic en Erzähler (Das Paradies und die Peri, Schumann) dans une mise en scène de Peter Sellars et sous la direction musicale de Gustavo Dudamel.

Ses récentes interprétations d’Elijah/Street dans X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X (Anthony Davis) au Seattle Opera et de Pelegrin (New Year, Tippett) pour la Birmingham Opera Company, dans une mise en scène signée Keith Warner, lui ont valu des critiques élogieuses.

Op het concertpodium was Joshua Stewart te horen in het oratorium Sanctuary Road (Paul Moravec) met het Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, in Tippetts A Child of Our Time met het BBC Symphony Orchestra en zong hij recent voor het eerst de tenorpartij in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem en in Brittens War Requiem. In maart maakt hij bij ons zijn debuut in de titelrol van Mozarts Idomeneo.

COURTNEY BRYAN Piano FR

La pianiste et compositrice américaine Courtney Bryan, originaire de La Nouvelle-Orléans, a étudié au Conservatory of Music d’Oberlin (Ohio), à la Rutgers University (New Jersey) et obtenu un doctorat en composition à la Columbia University (New York). Elle a également effectué un post­ doctorat en études afro-américaines à la Princeton University.

Elle a été compositrice en résidence auprès du Jacksonville Symphony de 2018 à 2020 et à Opera Philadelphia de 2022 à 2024, et « creative

partner » du Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra de 2020 à 2023. Elle est actuellement compositrice en résidence au New Haven Symphony Orchestra. Ses œuvres ont été jouées par ces formations, ainsi que par le London Sinfonietta, le Quince Ensemble (dans le cadre du programme MusicNOW du Chicago Symphony Orchestra), le Colorado Springs Philharmonic, La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, le New York Jazzharmonic, le Spektral Quartet et le Talea Ensemble, entre autres.

Parmi ses créations récentes, mentionnons Dreaming (Freedom Sounds) donné par le International Contemporary Ensemble ; Visual Rhythms joué par le Jacksonville Symphony ; House of Pianos, créé en 2023 dans sa version de chambre par le LA Phil New Music Group et dans sa version orchestrale par le Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra ; Gathering Song, composé pour le baryton-basse Ryan Speedo Green et le New York Philharmonic ; Syzygy, interprété pour la première fois par la violoniste Jennifer Koh et le Chicago Sinfonietta ; et Yet Unheard pour soprano, chœur et orchestre.

Elle enseigne à la Tulane University à La Nouvelle-Orléans.

De Amerikaanse pianiste en componiste Courtney Bryan is ook afkomstig van New-Orleans.
