Plan reflectionS and develoPment

Ground floor plan

Sharp edged boundaries need to be softened as they may deter users from building contradicting with overall purpose of drawing people in Absence of contextual link - it is imperative to show what sort of impact does the school have on the the wider city as a whole

Linear design of allotment with lack of program specific variation risks duplication and doesnt show have space is effectively utilized by users Buffer zone between sidewalk and start of allotment needed to create a welcoming space to draw in people The adaptability of the market space and bifold doors allows for an indoor outdoor living during the warm months therefore an open space beside the market entrance is needed to account for that

First floor plan

Open plan of market space needs to be accounted in terms of structure to accomodate for the large spans of the open space

Section AA

Importance of making the building more present amidst the urban grain adding an extra floor - by stacking the workshop spaces on top of one another and additional restaurant floor Cost to build a second floor is justified as it creates a more welcoming grand entrance to the market, adds an additional dining floor for the restaurant and additional service spaces that could account for staff

Opportunity to add a visual and physical link from restaurant to market with an overhanging balcony. Could self supported by the CLT floor slab due to small span of 3m or so

Section BB

Absence of physical link from workshop space to market + restaurant building contradiciting with connected spaces ehtos

Bi fold doors separating the market space to the other spaces is needed to allow for adaptability based on user preference Absence of link between Pankhurst center and school - need for an integrated program to link both spaces together corresponding to school’s overarching values Kitchens need to be alligned to reduce need for separate piping system and to link services of air exhausts, electrics and water together, and to ease construction Additional greenhouse incurs additional space and cost - unnecessary feature as a greenhouse restaurant already

Public - Private

Additional Greenhouse restaurant mezanine floor provides visual connection opportunities to the main greenhouse floor for users and also maintaining its privacy alligning with the public to private spatial hierarchy created within the school

Opportunity to connect the market to the restaurant through a central exposed staircase to strenghen physical and visual connections between the spaces Additional facilities such as staff showers may be needed to account for staff needs and ensuring their well being amidst the equitable driven spaces 3.1 submitted plan was a CLT structure with timber cladding - heated and insulated in all areas. Upon reflection, a typical market space is usually cold in order to avoid food rotting etc, therefore it was decided to keep the market as a cold space complemented by a polycarbonate facade for a translucent view, safety and drawing in passer by’s This saves significant heating costs during the majority cold months and alligns with the school’s concept of reducing waste and unnecessary built space as a way of minimizing costs and having low environmental impact - making the space independently run. The rest of the building is heating and insulated - details further included in the

Ground floor plan

Bi fold doors allowing programs to accomodate for indoor outdoor market Wall/ barrier needed to separate elevator from toilets/ services for privacy

Strengthened interior visual + physical connection through exposed staircase allowing users to overlook hall when going up Typical market stall module may be rearranged so vendors face Grafton street, allowing passer by’s to observe the ongoing activity inside Bicycle rack, herb beds and benches placed around the facade to provide rest spaces and advocate food for everyone

More toilets needed to avoid quening - may need to change from having all communal toilets to ungendered toilets in order to save space, cost and maximising cubicles needed in school according to regulations Green wall boundary blocks access/ views from traffic in Nelson street by the Pankhurst center entrance. May create an unsafe path on Nelson street for passery by’s. Look into varying heights of wall to create a balance between safety, privacy Colour coded allotment showing variety in programmatic elements. Central water feature ties in all the allotment programs together and is the central feeding hub for

First floor plan

Seating in between flights of stairs provided to encourage elderly users, pregnant mothers etc to take the stairs instead of the lift by providing intermediate rest spaces between each flights of stairs overlooking the market

Balcony overhangs by 3m thus it supports itself and no adidtional structural support is required

Overhanging balcony allows program flexibility through bi fold doors and physical + visual interaction between gardening students and cooking students

More toilets needed on this floor since there is high occupation and to avoid queing. Wall between lift and toilet may be placed for privacy Balcony overlooks market program creating dialogue between users through their different programs. Bi fold doors allow for spatial flexibility

Vertical fire escape in need of a protected lobby and extended landing space for safety and to prevent smoke seeping in vertical protexted core Spatial connection to Restaurant kitchen through door allowing program integration and flexibility of programs interconnecting when desired

1st floor greenhouse space includes a cooking, gardening and dining space to create dialogue between all three building users and exert conversation between them

Second floor plan

Get natural light in to ancillary hallway through placing glazing on the wall facing the exposed staircase + creates visual connection to circulation and market Balcony on mezanine floor to be removed as it may attract traffic contradicting to the floor’s purpose of being a private initmate space for user’s dining experience (as part of the spatial public - private hierarchy). May also cause some structural complications

Solar panels/ PVC’s reflect southern light to maximise energy yields

Balcony overlooks nearly entire first floor greenhouse space allowing views + visual connection to users yet still maintaining the privacy desired by limiting space for only dining purposes

Skylight position needs to ba altered to south in order to maximise solar gain and daylighting
